This study conducts thermal aging treatment to study the effect of thermal aging on the PD degradation process of the oil-paper insulation. The partial discharge inception voltages, extinction voltages, carbon mark, and microscopic morphology of samples are analyzed. The results show that thermal aging does not reduce the partial discharge inception voltages of oil-paper but can make the spark produced in the oil-paper more difficult to extinguish. At the initial stage, thermal aging has little effect on the development of partial discharge in normal direction of samples, while in later stages, the effect begins to appear; thermal aging reduces the insulation performance between layers of oil impregnated paper and accelerates the carbon trace growth rate in the horizontal direction. In this model, the first layer is most severely bombarded by electrons, and this layer is most obviously affected by the electric field in the normal direction at the contact point between the electrode and the insulating paper. The lower layer is affected by the horizontal and vertical electric fields; therefore, a large area of fiber looseness occurs on the surface of the oil impregnated paper. The degree of deterioration is proportional to the endurance time and aging time, and the damage degree of oil impregnated paper decreases with the increase of the number of layers. The long-term operation of dry-type transformer bushings at high temperatures can impact the performance of their primary insulation material. This article presents an experimental study of the effect of thermal aging time on electrical treeing in the epoxy resin-impregnated paper. The experimental results show that the electrical treeing pattern along the middle path of the electric field and the interlayer creepage along the average direction of the electric field are closely related to the aging time. Under the effect of thermal aging at 150 °C, the tree-starting voltage of epoxy resin-impregnated paper tends to increase and decrease as the aging time increases. An analysis and discussion of the test results in conjunction with scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) tests suggest that the destruction of the cross-linked network of the epoxy resin-impregnated paper at 150 °C is a fundamental reason for the significant decrease in the material’s tree-starting voltage and the change in electrical treeing morphology and interlayer creepage. For extra-high-voltage high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables, not only high electrical insulation performance but also low dielectric loss is required. Therefore, we focus on a porous synthetic paper with lower dielectric loss, e.g., Tyvek polyethylene nonwoven fabric, than that of polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP), which has been used for a conventional HTS cable insulation system. In this paper, we compare partial discharge inception characteristics for different liquid nitrogen/synthetic paper composite insulation systems. Although the circulating flow of insulating oil can enhance heat dissipation in converter transformers, it can also influence the space charge distribution in oil–paper composite insulation. In this article, the oil–paper composite insulation between flat electrodes was used as the experimental model. Based on the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method, we investigated the effect of uncharged flowing oil on the space charge distribution in composite insulation under a dc electric field and polarity reversal. Under a dc electric field, as the oil flow velocity increased, the amount of interface charge between the oil and paper first increased and then decreased. During the polarity reversal process, the field distortion was aggravated at slower oil flows. Bubbles, as typical defects of oil–paper insulation systems, pose a great threat to the insulation state. In this article, the characteristics and mechanisms of the partial discharge (PD) inception, evolution, and induced breakdown of bubbles embedded between oil-impregnated paper (OIP) layers are investigated. The results show that the PD inception has a significant statistical time delay due to the lack of free electrons. The PD inception time delay (PDTD) follows an exponential distribution and leads to the large dispersion of the PD inception voltage (PDIV), which follows a Weibull distribution. The changes in PD behavior [charge, repetition rate, pulse current waveform, and phase-resolved PD (PRPD)] over time all show two separable stages (stages 1 and 2). The continuous recording of bubble area and gas composition under PD reveals that the evolution of bubble PD is attributed to the change in gas composition rather than the change in surface conditions as believed by researchers. The OIP breakdown induced by bubble PD indicates two breakdown modes, fast and slow, which correspond to direct-induced breakdown in stage 1 and cumulative-damage breakdown in stage 2. The former occurs because of the severe distortion of the electric field by the space charge at the head of the discharge channel inside the bubble, whereas the latter occurs because of the gradual deterioration of the OIP due to the continuous PD action. It is known that 1,2,3 benzotriazole (BTA) can effectively limit the oil flow electrification in oil–paper insulation used in HVAC transformers, but it is still unclear whether BTA is applicable to converter transformers. Thus, the effects of BTA on interface charge behaviors and charge migration in oil–paper system under dc stress are investigated in this article. The experimental results show that BTA reduces the interface barrier between oil and oil-immersed paper by altering the charge distribution of the electric double layer (EDL) at the oil–paper interface, which is beneficial to the operation stability of converter transformers in the condition of polarity inversion. However, it is also found that the BTA additive promotes the charge accumulation at oil–paper interface and enhances the local electric field by increasing the carrier mobility of oil–paper insulation. As an important piece of equipment of ultrahigh-voltage direct current, the valve side of a converter transformer contains a large dc component prone to partial discharge (PD) under the action of a slightly uneven electric field, which can be simulated using a wedge electrode. To study the PD characteristics of oil–paper insulation under a wedge-shaped electrode, a 2-D axisymmetric simulation model was established based on the bipolar-charge transport theory and the fluid dynamics drift-diffusion theory. The microscopic discharge images at nanosecond scale under different dc voltage polarities were calculated, and the change process of the space charge and electric field intensity distribution was obtained. The effects of the voltage amplitude, polarity, and dielectric constant on PD characteristics are discussed. The simulation results show that the discharge pattern and velocity exhibit a notable polarity effect. This polarity effect is related to the adsorption of the cellulose hydroxyl group to negative charge, which leads to the amplitude of the homopolar charge accumulated in negative polarity being greater than that accumulated in positive polarity under the same applied voltage intensity so that the homopolar charge has a greater barrier to the discharge. This type of adsorption is positively correlated with the difference of dielectric constant between the paperboard and insulating oil. This study investigates the effect of moisture content on space charge characteristics based on the dynamic space charge response and conductivity characteristics of oilpaper insulation under a DC electric field. Moisture contents ranging from 0.34–2.89% are considered under an electric field of up to 20 kV/mm. The results show that homocharge accumulates inside the oil-paper insulator near both electrodes, with the amount of charge gradually increasing as the moisture content rises. It may be related to the decreased charge injection barrier at the electrode-sample interface as the moisture level increases. The conductivity increases with the rise in moisture level. However, as the conductivity increases, the corresponding space charge accumulation during polarization does not decrease, but increases significantly. This indicates that space charge accumulation may be related to both charge injection and conductivity. The electric field distortion inside the oil-paper insulator increases as the moisture content rises, with the maximum electric field distortion rate going from 16.9 to 92.9% at 5 kV/mm and from 29.7 to 62.5% at 20 kV/mm. Frequency Domain Spectroscopy (FDS) is a powerful tool to study the dielectric properties of oil-paper insulation, which is widely used under high electric field strength. The motion of charge carriers under high electric field strength will cause new dielectric characteristics in FDS curves, from which more information could be extracted for insulation state assessment. In this paper, FD spectra are measured under high electric field strength. The electric field dependence of the loss peak in middle frequency and the characteristics of dielectric loss in low frequency are studied. With the influence of trapping on the motion of charge carriers under electric field being considered, charge carriers hopping polarization model and charge carriers motion dependent conductance model are proposed. The trap energy level of oil-paper insulation decreases when the moisture content increases, thus, the motion characteristics of charge carriers change, leading to decreasing loss peak in middle frequency and inverse dielectric loss characteristics in low frequency. These two models introduce the influence of traps on carrier motion into the dielectric response and enable one to gain a better understanding of the dielectric properties of oil-paper insulation under high electric field strength. In this paper, charge distributions in three-layered epoxy resin and epoxy resin impregnated paper samples under AC and AC-DC superimposed electric fields are measured by the improved high-speed pulsed electro-acoustic system. To exclude the interferences caused by the discontinuity of relative permittivity, a method to distinguish between net dipolar charges and free charges is proposed. Through analysis, the influences of frequency, AC component and DC component on the charge transport and trapping characteristics in multi-layered epoxy composites are obtained, which could provide important reference to the structural design and optimization of converter transformer bushings. This paper proposes a method of distinguishing the contributions of ionized and injected charges to the charge transport in oil immersed paper in triple-layer and double-layer samples. With the double-layer sample, the apparent mobility including the ions contribution is obtained by the calculation according to the speed of accumulated charge density at the interface. The contribution of ions is excluded by subtracting the accumulated charge density in the triple-layer sample from that in the double-layer sample. It is found that the interface charge mainly comes from the ionization charges under a low field, and the contribution of injected charge takes a more important part at higher electric field. In this paper, the temporal space charge dynamics under both temperature and voltage polarity reversal of an epoxy resin impregnated crepe paper are characterized by pulsed electroacoustic method. It is found that the space charge injection and the interfacial traps located between the epoxy and paper plays an important role in determining the space charge dynamics. The results reveal that below 353 K, the calculated interfacial charge density is consistent with the Maxwell-Wagner (MW) model, while above 353 K, it is smaller than the measured value. The time constant during charging is much smaller than that predicted by the MW model and the space charge injection showed polarity effect, which leads to the interfacial charge densities under polarity poling voltage not being equal. The use of paper in electrical insulation, especially in power transformers, remains a topical subject. The interest for the insulating paper, despite the emergence of many synthetic materials is ascribed to its low cost price and its ability to an oil impregnation. However its strong hydrophilic character remains the main difficulty for its implementation in electrical insulation. This affinity to water absorption and/or adsorption shows that a good understanding of the moisture effect becomes imperative. Several studies were carried out on the subject but a systematic study of the moisture effect on overall behavior of paper has not been achieved. This work is meant to be a contribution for this systematic investigation. The first step of this study, which is the object of the present article, concerns an examination of time variation of the electrical currents, under dc stress, for different moisture levels. A particular attention is given to the polarization and depolarization currents. These currents are examined during alternate charges and discharges sequences. An increase of the current, during the application of continuous voltage was noticed. This unexpected phenomenon would be related to an electro-dissociation and/or polarization processes. This paper investigates the dissolved gases evolution in transformer oil under combined DC/AC electrical-thermal stress. Dissolved gases detected in transformer aged insulation oil reveal that oil under AC electric field combined with thermal stress can produce more dissolved gases than oil under DC electric field with thermal stress but less than the gases produced in oil under distorted AC or combined AC/DC voltage stress. This is attributed to the divergent migration properties of the charged components under different types of electric fields. To further understand this behavior, carrier recombination coefficient is proposed to explain the oil DGA results under various aging stresses. Results show that diagnostic parameters such as breakdown voltage, oil interfacial tension, and moisture content in pressboard should be used along with DGA results in order to accurately diagnose the insulation condition within converter transformers that impose a combined AC/DC voltage stress on the insulation system. This paper reports on a new method to measure the mobilities of both positive and negative charges in insulating materials based on space charge measurement in two-layer samples. To fulfill the condition of a unipolar carrier system, a blocking material is used as a barrier on one electrode thereby preventing charge injection to ensure the unipolar charges injected from the other electrode are transported through the bulk and accumulate at the barrier. Experimentally, the carrier mobility of oil immersed cellulose paper was obtained using the proposed method, and the result of mobilities of both positive and negative charges is presented. The temperature and field dependence of carrier mobility were also investigated, and the activation energies for negative and positive charges were calculated. The obtained carrier mobility of negative charges (majority electron carriers) is approximately 2 times of that of positive charges, and the charge migration can be interpreted by the thermally activated hopping conduction mechanism. In this study, the space charge in oil-impregnated thick pressboard and Kraft paper were measured by the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method from -20 to +60 °C. A bipolar charge transport model was used to simulate the transport processes of homocharge and heterocharge, and the acoustic attenuation process in the samples. The test results show that space charge accumulates in the thick pressboard and Kraft paper increases first and then decreases with temperature, and its maximum appears at 40°C, while little space charge accumulates at -20°C. The space charge near the lower electrode shrinks in the oil-impregnated thick pressboard at high temperature and the shrinkage is larger at 60°C. In the oil-impregnated Kraft paper, the accumulation and charge density of positive charge is different from negative charge. The ion transport process model simulates the charge shrinkage near the electrode, and disappears at the upper electrode after the acoustic attenuation simulation. In this work, samples of oil-immersed paper with different moisture levels and aging condition were studied. Frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) of the samples was examined at 40 °C under different excitation voltages. A non-linear phenomenon in frequency domain dielectric response with different moisture contents and aging condition was observed. The non-linear phenomenon appears to be related to the hindrance effect of cellulose on the movement of ions and the Poole-Frenkel effect on the concentration of ions. With aging, the nonlinear loss peaks at different frequencies caused by the effect of nonlinear conductance and interface polarization appear in the FDS results. The non-linear phenomenon was modeled and verified experimentally. The oil-impregnated paper, as a vital part in the oil-paper insulation system, serves as the main insulation medium in converter transformer suffering various electric fields. However, the accumulated surface charge on the paper would accelerate the degradation of insulation system and may lead to surface flashover. Direct-fluorination is a method to change the chemical components of polymer matrix thus could affect the surface property of the dielectric material without the alternation of bulk property. This paper presents a method to modify the surface structure of the paper applied in transformers. The paper used in the experiment was treated using the F2/N2 mixture with a volume fraction of 10% for the F2 gas at a pressure of 0.05 MPa in a reaction vessel for 2, 5, 10 and 15 min, respectively. The chemical elements, functional group and physical morphology of the paper before and after modification were measured with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX), attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) and scanning electron micrographs (SEM), respectively. Surface and volume resistivity of the fluorinated paper were measured. Furthermore, the surface charge property of the oil-impregnated paper was measured under various positive and negative voltages. Obtained results showed that the fluorination had an obvious influence on the chemical property and surface structure of the paper leading to the reduction of surface and volume resistivity. The treatment was shown to reduce the initial potential and cause acceleration in charge decay process. The trap distribution of the paper surface presented alternation as well. Breakdown in dielectrics, the mechanism of which is still not yet fully revealed, exhibits very complicated test phenomena and characteristics. The breakdown voltage of a dielectric is believed to be related not only to the dielectric properties but also to the waveform of the applied voltage. For most dielectrics, the impulse breakdown voltage decreases with increasing wavefront time. However, we found for oil-impregnated paper (OIP) used in power transformers, increasing wavefront time in lightning impulses (at microsecond timescales) may lead to a significant increase in breakdown voltage. In contrast, the variation in the wavetail time produces very little effect on breakdown voltage. Combined with our previous test results on the space charge distributions in OIP, we tried to provide two explanations regarding this interesting phenomenon: First, the wavefront time of the applied impulse voltage affects the movement process of the positive particles in the oil-filled micro cavities in OIP, which is strongly related to the local electric field in the oil filled micro cavities and the breakdown voltage of the OIP. Moreover, the wavefront time is closely related to the trapping and detrapping process of the dielectrics. In this paper, the rapid aging due to Partial Discharge (PD) activity was investigated in unaged and thermally aged oil-impregnated paper with a disk-shaped cavity between the sheets of paper. The PD inception voltage and the voltage for instantaneous breakdown were measured, and the time to breakdown was measured by applying voltages less than the instantaneous breakdown voltage. A comparison between time to breakdown of unaged and thermally aged paper shows no significant difference between thermally aged and unaged paper at sustaining PD activity. The time to breakdown as a function of applied electric field was plotted and compared for both cases showing points scattered around a line in log-log scale. Changes of the PD parameters, such as PD magnitude and PD repetition rate were analyzed from the beginning of PD activity up to the moment of breakdown. The results show that the number and magnitude of PD increase at the beginning of aging until they reach to a maximum value, then both quantities decrease slowly over time until the final puncture breakdown occurs. The results emphasize the importance of PD monitoring on real equipment with oil-impregnated paper as insulation system, such as power transformers, since a focus on the number and magnitude of PD at just the present time may mislead the interpretation. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements performed on unaged and thermally aged paper showed an increasing trend of ε" after the sheets of paper were exposed to thermal aging for longer time. This paper proposed a simulation method for the charge transport in single-layer oil-paper insulation. The method of transient upstream finite-element method (FEM) is derived in order to calculate the time variation of charge densities in medium. The numerical simulation of charge transport in the single-layer oil-paper insulation is realized by applying the transient upstream FEM to the transport equations of bipolar charges. With reasonable microparameter, the charge transport in an experimental object is simulated. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental data. A bent model of oil-paper insulation is analyzed to study the charge distribution under the actual condition. Space charge is a threat to insulation materials and oil-paper insulation gradually degrades in service. The degradation of cellulose affects space charge formation, accumulation and dissipation, and the presence of space charge affects the performance of dielectric. In this paper, the effect of thermal aging on space charge behaviors and other properties including permittivity, conductivity, and tensile strength was investigated. Oil-paper samples were aged at a hot spot temperature (180?). During thermal aging, space charge distribution was measured at a regular interval at room temperature. And the pulse electro-acoustic (PEA) method was used for space charge measurement. The results showed that the thermal aging at hot spot temperature caused increase of conductivity and tensile strength degradation. The permittivity increased at the beginning but then it decreased, while dissipation factor showed an upward trend. Besides these, trap distribution and carriers characteristics were also affected. The formations of space charge of unaged and aged oil paper were consequently different under low electric field. Due to the generation of traps by the degradation of cellulose, more charge, especially positive charge was trapped, but the increased traps mostly were shallow traps. Based on the Schottky model, a correlation between space charge injection and the permittivity was drawn. Space charge has received much attention recently because an understanding of space charge in oil-paper insulation is useful for the design of converter transformers. This paper presents a study of space charge dynamics at the physical interface using the pulsed electroacoustic (PEA) method. After sample inversion, space charge in the vicinity of semiconductor electrode could be clearly observed when the sample is under depolarization. When an unexposed sample was placed next to a previously polarized one, negative charge appeared at the dielectric interface. These results indicated that there were other reasons in addition to acoustic loss that led to space charge distribution distortion. As regards the dielectric interface, it was found that an electrical double layer was formed at the interface, and the space charge sign was dependent upon the polarity of applied voltage. Space charge behavior at the interface depended on several aspects of the status of the interface, and during voltage polarity reversal, the interface was a weak point of the insulation. As the temperature gradient always exists in the insulation of power equipment, the influence of temperature gradient on oil-impregnated paper insulation is studied by experiments and simulation. It's found that in the both single-layer and double-layer structures, the heterocharges always appear near the lower temperature electrode, and increase with the enhancement of temperature gradient and field stress, resulting in more considerable field distortion. However, there are more heterocharges in the single-layer samples while the field distortion is more severe in double-layer samples. Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the mechanism of temperature gradient effect. It is indicated that the space charge accumulation is mainly due to the temperature dependence of the charge injection and conduction. The presence of space charge is a serious threat to the reliability of insulation material under voltage polarity reversal. The results of space charge evolution in oil-paper insulation during external voltage polarity inverse at room temperature were presented in this paper. A mirror image effect charge was observed in the steady state, but the formation of it was affected by the first polarizing, which could cause a change of electrical property. The results showed that the mirror image effect was independent of the involved nature, type and dynamics of charge. Experiments of different reversal polarities and periods indicated that the slow decay of heterocharge retained from previous homocharge injection was the cause of electric field enhancement. And the reversal period therefore had an effect on voltage polarity reversal, namely the shorter the reverse period, the higher the stress enhancement. The reliability of oil-paper insulation could be influenced by the polarity reversal because charge injection and distribution were unpredictable, and space charge modified and in return was affected by the field as well. The concept of using cellulose as a smart material for preparing Electro-active paper (EAPap) has been a land mark discovery, since it exhibits an impressive magnitude of actuation at relatively modest voltages. Considering the small thickness of cellulose samples (35 μm) and smaller depth of electrodes (100 nm), even at relatively low operating voltages (7 V), high electrical stresses can exist at pointed asperities on electrode surface, non-uniform locations in cellulose structure and at triple points joining electrode, cellulose and air. This paper reports the results of our ac and dc breakdown tests on cellulose samples carried out according to ASTM standards. Transformer oil and insulation paper are subject to the combined effects of the electric field and temperature operations, which significantly impact insulation deterioration. This article designs a comparative test of the electro-thermal combined aging to obtain several characteristic parameters for the aging degree of oil-pressboard insulation. Molecular dynamics are used to establish a mixed molecular model of oil-pressboard insulation to simulate the pyrolysis reactions at high temperatures using the ReaxFF force field. The microscopic effects of the electric field on the aging of oil-pressboard insulation are studied. The rationale of the simulation model is verified from experimental results, and the trend of the reactants and products in the reaction process was considered to determine the influence mechanism of electric–thermal coupling on oil-pressboard insulation. The experimental results show that thermal stress remains the most important factor toward cracking in insulation paper. The acid value and furfural formation rate in oil increase, and the polymerization degree of the insulation paper decreases rapidly after the combined electric and thermal aging. In addition, the molecular dynamics simulations show that pyrolysis increases the bond energy, promotes repulsion between atoms, and leads to fractured bonds. The addition of the electric field increases the susceptibility of the chemical bonds in cellulose molecules to breakage. The morphology of the cellulose chain then changes, and the diffusion of small molecules intensifies. The electrical insulation system of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cable consists of liquid nitrogen (N2(l)) and polypropylene laminated paper (PPLP). Partial discharge (PD) may occur in butt gaps of the insulation layers and its characteristics imply the insulation performance of HTS cables. N2(l) cooling system is installed in the power system and N2(l) will flow through the cables during the system operation. Filling the HTS cable with N2(l) in order to perform pre-shipment inspection is timeconsuming and costly for cable manufacturers. Therefore, the authors are trying to find a cost effective method for pre-shipment inspections. One alternative is to use high pressure gaseous nitrogen (N2(g)) instead of N2(l). This article investigates PD characteristics such as PD inception electric field (PDIE) and PD extinction electric field (PDEE) in butt gaps of HTS cables in 0.1-MPa to 0.3-MPa N2(l) and 0.1-MPa to 1.0-MPa N2(g) environments. For assessing the surface/volume effects, PD characteristics are measured with changing the size of butt gaps. It turns out that PDIE and PDEE in N2(g) are linearly correlated with those in N2(l) at any gas pressure in our testing, and PDIE in 1.0-MPa N2(g) is almost 30% of that in 0.2-MPa N2(l). The failures of high-voltage transformers and reactors can result from the deposition of copper sulfide on the oil-impregnated paper insulation. This study explored the influence of electric fields on copper sulfide deposition and the properties of insulating oils as a result of the reaction of dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) with copper in oil-immersed transformers. Accelerated aging experiments were conducted for pig-tail windings under two sets of conditions, namely, thermal aging only at 140 ?C and AC/DC electrical and thermal aging at 5 kV/140 ?C under low oxygen condition. This was combined with oil containing dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) added to the non-corrosive oil to a concentration of 200 mg/kg. The corrosive sulfur deposits were examined by observing the surface morphology of the windings and measuring the copper and sulfur contents on the windings via inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry and a precipitation method. The properties of the insulating oils were measured and analyzed at intervals. The results indicate that electric fields increased the amount of deposited copper sulfide on the windings. The higher the electric field strength, the higher the amount of deposited copper sulfide on the insulating paper surface. Subjecting the oil-paper insulation to electric field and elevated temperature generates dissolved copper in the insulating oil. The electric field can promote the dissolution of copper in oil. The simulation of electric field transients in HVDC cables can be a fundamental tool to support insulation system design when operation dynamics, which includes voltage polarity inversions and load variation, becomes significant during the expected cable life. The field behavior during voltage and temperature transients is associated with intrinsic and extrinsic ageing processes that can affect the cable design life. Traditional models employed for electric field simulations consider only the non–linear, steady–state dependence of conductivity on temperature and field magnitude, but they neglect the transient behavior of permittivity and conductivity, that is, polarization and charge trapping phenomena. These processes impact on the duration of the field transient and thus ageing. This paper discusses the numerical implementation of an electro–quasistatic model that can be used to perform transient simulations of electric fields in HVDC cables insulation. With respect to the model traditionally employed, the presented one is extended with Debye's equations for dielectric polarization processes. The model is implemented numerically using finite differences, or the Occhini equivalent circuit: this paper demonstrates that the two approaches are equivalent. The editors discuss the health of the Transactions, the rate of article submission, the time from submission to publication, and the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) Impact Factor of the Transactions and contributing factors for that value. They note that the Transactions have only 100-150 articles waiting for publication, and keeping in mind 45-50 articles are needed for each issue, this is a short and manageable backlog. By making the electronic versions of manuscripts available so far ahead of time, articles are available for a longer time, and there is a good chance for more citations, which should increase the impact factor of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON POWER ELECTRONICS (TPEL). In 2007, TPEL published 2600 pages, and it has gradually been increased to 4000 pages in 2011, 5000 pages in 2012, and 5500 pages are projected for 2013. We have decided to publish 12 printed issues so every month a new issue will be printed. A graph is provided showing the number of regular papers received in the past years as well as the number of published pages in the TPEL. Finally they note that in 2008, TPEL obtained a record high value for the impact factor (as shown in a figure) but in 2009 it was reduced a little. In 2010, they saw an increase and were among the top 10 of all published EE journals on a global scale. In 2011, it further increased to 4.6 which is a record high. There are three main reasons for our success: 1) the time from submission to publication has been significantly reduced? allowing the papers to be read over a longer time span; 2) Web of Science (ISI Thomsen Reuter) began to register new power electronics conferences in their database, and citations from conferences counts and contributes to a higher impact factor. The nonlinear ac–dc composite electric field in the winding area of the converter transformer was studied by considering the frequency and temperature dependence of the insulation materials in this paper. First, the relative permittivity and conductivity of vegetable oils, mineral oils, and insulation papers were measured at different frequencies and temperatures. Then, the oil-paper insulation structure model of one 500 kV converter transformer valve-side winding was established. The nonlinear composite electric field of the converter transformer insulation with vegetable oils and mineral oils was analyzed. The maximum voltage of the converter transformer with mineral oils is 524.9 kV, at −20 °C and that with vegetable oils is 497.1 kV. The converter transformer is the most important piece of equipment in ultrahigh voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission systems. The rectifying valve side of the converter transformer is dealing with composite voltages, containing both ac and dc components. Therefore, the characteristics of the partial discharge (PD) in oil–paper insulation of such rectifying valves are different from those of rectifying valves subjected to pure ac or dc voltage. In this study, theories of hydrodynamic drift-diffusion and bipolar charge transfer were used to build the needle-plate electrode model with a paperboard depression, and experiments were used to verify the feasibility of the simulation method. The electric field and net charge distribution that can reflect the PD were analyzed. Besides, the effects of instantaneous voltage, the proportion of ac–dc components, and depression parameters on the development characteristics of PD were also discussed. Simulation results show that applied voltage, interface charge density, and model parameters can all affect the electric field strength, which in turn influences the development of PD in the depression. This research reveals the process and influencing factors of PD during the electrical aging process, which not only helps to optimize the oil–paper insulation at the rectifying valve side of the converter transformer but also provides a basis for further explaining the PD mechanism. Frequent failures of transition joints were reported mainly near to the crutch area of the paper insulated cable side of the joints. In this paper, the authors present an estimation of the electric field and temperature distribution in the paper insulated cable side of a transition joint using simulations based on finite element method for 3-D geometry, which, apparently did not get much attention until now. It is found that non-linearities in material properties result in drastic changes in the distribution of electric field. The results indicate electric field enhancement near crutch area. The effect of varying load current, and ambient temperature on the peak electric field has been investigated. The simulations are validated analytically. This paper analyses the inherent difficulties in measuring the horizontal electric field from lightning and proposes some solutions to mitigate the contamination effect of the overwhelming vertical electric field. The analysis is carried out with a set of time-domain equations for the calculation of the electromagnetic fields from lightning. As these equations are scattered in several publications, in this paper they are compiled and presented in a harmonized form. Moreover, one new expression for the vertical electric field slightly below the ground surface is presented. It is shown that the horizontal electric field at the surface of lossy ground can be measured with minimum disturbance caused by the vertical electric field if the field sensor is placed slightly below the ground surface. This paper also shows that the horizontal electric field above the ground surface could be measured with the help of a pair of field sensors conveniently arranged so that the influence of the vertical electric field on the measurement is cancelled. UHV DC wall bushing is the only channel connecting the valve hall and the DC electric field in the converter station. For the epoxy - SF6 gas composite insulation wall bushing, the main insulation material is the epoxy/crepe paper core and SF6 gas. The transient process of establishing the DC electric field for the wall bushing is impacted by the temperature gradient. In this paper the 3-D temperature field of the wall bushing has been simulated considering the effect of heat conduction, convection and radiation. The simulation results have been confirmed using a temperature rise experiment. The transient process of the wall bushing under the actual operation condition has been simulated using the gas saturation current density method. The temperature impact on space charge density in the core, the surface charge on the interface, and the electric field distribution on the bushing is investigated. An closed oil circulating system with plane electrode was built to study the effect of space charge on oil flow electrification under DC voltage. The results reveal that with the increase of applied voltage, the streaming current was always enhanced. However, the polarity of streaming current depends on the sample configuration. If the negative high voltage electrode was exposed to oil layer, streaming current was negative. Otherwise streaming current had a tendency to be positive as applied voltage increased. In experimental model without exposed electrode, the polarity of streaming current was always positive. And the amplitude of streaming current was related to the number of insulating papers placed under electrode. More craft papers placed under negative high voltage electrode led to the increase of streaming current. Based on the bipolar transport model, a new simulation method is proposed to study the effect of charge injection and transportation on flow electrification under DC voltage. The physical mechanisms involved in the trapping and de-trapping processes associated with surface donor traps in gallium nitride (GaN) transistors are discussed in this paper. The paper challenges the conventional transient techniques adopted for extrapolating the trap energy level via experiments and TCAD simulations. Transient TCAD simulations were employed to reproduce the time-dependent electrical behavior of a metal-on-insulator field-effect transistor and explain the influence of the electric field and energy barrier on the transient time associated with the trapping and de-trapping mechanisms of surface traps. The comparison between three test structures and the relative variation of the trapping and de-trapping times with the bias and trap parameters leads to the suggestion of a proposed test structure and bias configuration to accurately extrapolate the energy level of surface traps in GaN transistors. Insulator pollution flashover occurs frequently and is harmful to the power transmission and distribution network. But the randomness of the pollution flashover and the complex influencing factors make it difficult to be predicted. The objective of this paper is to study the mechanism of the discharging on insulator surfaces and design a the calculation method which derives flashover probability. By calculating the distorted electric field in the initial streamer discharge quantitatively and combining it with the equivalent circuit of the insulator surface, the initial discharge voltage is derived. By analyzing the change in power input and dissipation in the process of the arc discharge, we propose the criterion on arc development and extinction, and the critical flashover conductivity of the insulator is obtained. Based on the probability density function, the behavior of the factors on the critical flashover conductivity is described, and the probability of insulator pollution flashover is calculated under different environmental conditions. In the validation experiment, the measured initial discharge voltage and pollution flashover ratio are close to the calculated values. The methods proposed in this paper could be used in the quantitative calculation of the initial discharge voltage and the prevention of the pollution flashover on insulators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper provides a survey of various experimental data available on the value of the propagation path loss of radio waves in a cellular wireless environment. It is shown starting with the Okumuraet al.’s paper on propagation measurements and other available published experimental data that they all exhibit that the electric field varies as $\rho ^{-1.5}$ within a cellular radius of a few kilometers, where $\rho $ is the radial distance of the receiving antenna from the transmitting one. This decay in the fields is equivalent to a propagation loss of −9 dB/octave or −30 dB for a decade of the distance. This value is independent of the nature of the ground, whether it be composed of rural, urban, suburban, or water. This is the first time it is stated that the propagation path loss due to the presence of ground generates a path loss of 90 dB when the signals travel a distance of 1 km. This value is rather large when compared to a loss of 30–50 dB produced by buildings, trees, and similar artifacts. Therefore, the experimental data indicate that the effect of trees and buildings have a secondary influence on the decay of the electric field with distance, the dominant one is the propagation loss over an imperfect ground. Contemporary propagation models do not acknowledge this fact. Outside the cellular radius of a few kilometers, the path loss appears to be 12 dB/octave or 40 dB/decade of distance. In a companion paper, it will be demonstrated that the values for the path loss can be explained from an analytical standpoint without taking recourse to statistics which involves a lot of assumptions on the functional variation of the variables of interest. This paper introduces a possible mechanism to explain the changes in neurons following extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MFs). The model in this paper contains two parts: the physical part and the bio-trigger part. The first part is an electric current equation, which is a generalization of the Nernst–Plank equation with the exposure of ELF-MF, and the second bio-part is a phenomenological model, which is a simple two-state channel with two steady state open (O) state and closed state (C). The two parts are complementary. The first part is utilized to explain changes about synaptic plasticity following ELF-MF exposure at embryonic and postnatal age. The second part is used to simulate the process of three different types of neurons reported by previous papers. According to the results, the present model is feasible for the simulation process. The concept of ion mobility or permeability is emphasized in this paper in part I, and channel state transition probabilities are paid much attention to in part II. In this paper, the ion mobility or permeability is supposed to have close relationships with ion channel transition probabilities, which connects the two parts of the model together. In the last 20 years the use of ester fluids as an alternative to mineral oil for transformer insulation has been an active field of research and development. These liquids have a much lower environmental impact than mineral oils, besides reducing the transformer’s fire risk. Although the use of natural and synthetic esters is nowadays frequent for certain applications, as for distribution transformers in highly populated areas, railway transformers or off-shore windmill transformers, the experience on large and medium sized units is still reduced. One of the critical aspects that must be assessed to use esters as dielectric fluids for large size transformers is the dielectric design of the equipment. The permittivity of esters and ester-impregnated cellulose are different from those of mineral-oil-cellulose systems, what has an impact on the electric field distribution in the transformer. Additionally, in some cases, the dielectric strength of ester fluids differs from that of mineral oil. This paper presents a study about the dielectric design of ester-based power transformers. The insulation system of a 400/138 kV, 280 MVA transformer was modelled using a finite element tool and a comparison of the field distribution under 50 Hz AC power voltage of both insulation systems is provided. This paper describes a novel approach to investigating the mechanisms related to partial discharge dynamics. Applying the chopped sequence provided insight into the dielectric void and allowed post partial discharge charge decay phenomena to be investigated. The measurements were performed on specimens with an embedded void having three different wall dielectric materials: insulating paper, thermosetting insulation or cross-linked polyethylene. The quantitative approach offers greater information regarding the relationship between measured quantities on phase-resolved patterns and charge decay phenomena inside the void. The comparison of PD inception phase angles between continuous and chopped sequence was used as an indicator for calculation of internal charge time decay in the void. The precise calculation of time constant for various void wall materials was presented. The decaying charge resulted in the variation of the electric field from deposited and accumulated charges. The presented methodology may allow the void to be analyzed with greater clarity, offering the potential to assess various mechanisms such as charge neutralization and conduction. Conventionally, integrated drain-extended MOS (DeMOS) like high-voltage devices are designed while keeping only performance targets for a given application in mind. In this paper, for the first time, performance and reliability codesign approach using 3-D TCAD has been presented for various superjunction (SJ) type DeMOS devices. In this context, how to effectively utilize the SJ concept in a DeMOS device for System on Chip applications, which often has stringent switching and RF performance targets, is explored in detail in this paper. Moreover, design and reliability tradeoffs for switching and RF applications are discussed, while considering two unique sets, one with fixed breakdown voltage and other with fixed ON-resistance.
