In this article, a leaf spring insertion to the stator back iron is proposed to reduce vibration and acoustic noise in a switched reluctance machine (SRM). The back iron of the tooth tip is curved out and the material made up of carbon spring steel is placed to dampen the vibration due to radial force. A 6/4 stator/rotor pole SRM is designed and its natural vibration mode frequencies are determined through finite-element analyses. The optimal current waveform is applied to the SRM model using the multidisciplinary coupled simulation method to determine the radial force with the harmonic orders. In the final step, the proposed leaf spring architecture is optimized to achieve the most dampening for the effective radial force harmonic orders. In this article, we deal with design considerations of a new ac hybrid-excitation permanent-magnet machine with axial stator. Due to the presence of an axial stator, the machine features a typical three-dimensional geometric structure and field distribution. A simplified reluctance-based network is developed to capture the main design features of the machine. The analytical equations are deduced relating the main geometric dimensions to the machine design criteria: speed, power, and flux regulation capability. The influence of key machine geometric parameters, i.e., radial/axial air-gap length, stack length, and bore diameter, on output power, flux density, and flux regulation capability is investigated. It is found that there is a design tradeoff between the machine power density and flux regulation capability. The d/q-axis inductance and its ratio, which has an influence on flux weakening capability and operation performance, is examined. Finally, a 6-pole/36-slot prototype is built. A typical flywheel energy storage system (FESS) includes an electrical machine, a flywheel, and magnetic bearings, which are independent of each other. Therefore, the structure of FESS is complicated, which leads to the problems of high cost and low integration. This article presents a novel stator PM excitation solid rotor machine (SPE-SRM) for FESS, which integrates an electrical machine, flywheels, and a magnetic bearing. The design method of the SPE-SRM is presented specifically. First, the structure and operation principle of the SPE-SRM are illustrated. Second, the design and optimization of the flywheel-rotor are presented with considering of power, energy storage, and mechanical strength. Third, the magnetic equivalent circuit of the SPE-SRM is established to simplify the design. Besides, the armature reaction and leakage flux factor are investigated. Fourth, the performance indexes, including torque, suspension force, no-load back electromotive force (back-EMF), losses, and temperature rise are fully analyzed by the finite element analysis. Finally, a 22 kW prototype is manufactured and tested. The rationality of the concept and design is validated by experiments. This article proposes a new “switched lumped reluctance network”-based equivalent circuit for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) under saturation. The proposed circuit incorporates the effects of the position-dependent switching of the phase windings and changing position of the rotor with respect to the stator. This feature enables the analysis of non-uniform and dynamic variation of flux in motor iron sections along with that in the air gap and their effects on the phase current. The proposed model, thus, emulates the operation of an SRM, more truly, through an equivalent circuit approach. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified by comparing the analytical results of five different stator–rotor sets (having different air gaps and tooth angular widths) with the finite-element method (FEM) simulated results and found to be in excellent mutual agreement. Recently, model-based predictive current control (MB-PCC) has been presented as a good alternative to classical control algorithms in terms of simplicity and performance reliability. However, MB-PCC suffers from the high dependence on system parameters, which may deteriorate its performance under parameters variations. On the other hand, synchronous reluctance motors (SynRMs) are susceptible to suffer from inductances variations due to the magnetic saturation. Accordingly, in this article a new model-free predictive current control of SynRMs based on a recurrent neural network (RNN-PCC) is developed and proposed. The proposed RNN-PCC relies on the identification of the SynRM currents without considering any parameters. Simulation and experimental results show that both RNN-PCC and MB-PCC have similarly excellent dynamics, while better control performance and tracking errors can be achieved thanks to the proposed RNN-PCC. Dc-field excited modular variable flux reluctance machines (VFRM) are passive salient-pole rotor and independent stator winding, which makes it suitable for aerospace applications. Fault-tolerant operation is commonly required to improve its reliability. Hence, the performance under winding open-circuit faults is analyzed and the fault-tolerant control strategy is presented to increase the output capacity in this article. First, the dc-rectified output voltages and power of the VFRM under both normal and open-circuit faults are derived. Then, phase angle control strategy of the fault-tolerant operation for a 12-slot-14-rotor-pole (12s14r) modular VFRM is proposed, where the control sequence is optimized to achieve the maximum output power of the generation system. Compared with the classical fault-tolerant method, a higher applicability of the proposed method in terms of the types of fault-tolerant operations can be achieved. The electromagnetic properties, including the armature current and the capacity of electrical power output, are analyzed with finite-element analysis. This article focusses on power quality issues related with the operation of a wind energy conversion system employing a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), integrated with a solar photovoltaic array, under unbalanced, and distorted grid conditions. The multiple-order DFIG electromagnetic torque ripples and grid active power ripples, resulting from the unbalanced and distorted grid, can be mitigated, however, at the cost of highly unbalanced and distorted currents. This article provides a possible solution towards a tradeoff by developing a flexible ripple minimization technique based on a cross-feedback extended second order generalized integrator for harmonics sequence separation (CextSOGI-HSS). The CextSOGI-HSS based current compensation enables a controlled minimization of ripple as per the customizable flexibility quotient. Furthermore, the current compensation technique employs an improved recursive least squares (IRLS) adaptive filtering algorithm for processing DFIG stator currents and local load currents. The IRLS algorithm improves grid currents harmonics spectra by filtering-out higher order harmonics from DFIG stator currents and nonlinear load currents, meanwhile, the effects of any load or stator currents unbalance on grid currents are also mitigated. This article proposes a multiobjective optimization design framework for a double stator brushless hybrid excitation motor (DSBHEM) to provide high torque, wide flux regulation ability and low torque ripple. The design variables are divided into sensitive level and insensitive level by sensitivity analysis. The response surface model (RSM) and nondominated sorting genetic algorithm 2 (NSGA2) are organically combined to generate a set of Pareto solutions for the sensitive level variables, from which the optimal values of the sensitive level variables are obtained. In addition, the optimal values of insensitive variables are obtained through single parameter scanning optimization, and a set of final optimal design variables are obtained. This article reveals the flux leakage design and modeling principle of a flux leakage controllable permanent magnet (FLC-PM) machine by considering driving cycles. The key is to obtain the relationship between flux leakage characteristics and multiple operating conditions. Based on the flux leakage controllable concept, an FLC-PM machine with an artfully designed flux leakage region is proposed. The design principle of the machine is investigated by analyzing the magnetic circuit of the machine in multiple operating conditions. The flux leakage factor is introduced to characterize the variable magnetic field in multiple operating conditions. On this basis, the mathematical model of the FLC-PM machine is deduced, and the driving characteristics of the machine are studied in detail. In order to evaluate the presented principle of the FLC-PM machine, a prototype is manufactured for experiments. In this article, an integrated drive converter of segmented double-stator switched reluctance machine (SDS-SRM) with isolation and nonisolation charging capabilities for electric vehicle (EV) is presented. The proposed converter can not only reduce the number of the power switches, but also implement multiple operation modes. In nonisolation charging mode, the motor windings and existing power switches constitute a buck/boost converter to charge the battery. The appropriate rotor positions are obtained to achieve torque-free control, and the interleaved phase currents control method is introduced to reduce the charging current ripples. In isolation charging mode, the inner-stator is powered by the utility grid to drive the middle-rotor, and converts electrical energy into mechanical energy, while the outer-stator is operated in generation mode to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. The SDS-SRM is served as a rotating transformer to transfer the electric power to charge the battery with the galvanic isolation function. A low power proof-of-concept prototype platform is built and experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed integrated drive converter and the corresponding control schemes. In current engineering, the skewing slots approach is commonly used for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) to reduce torque ripple and electromagnetic vibration. However, this approach may limit the axial length of the motor and increase the manufacturing cost. This article studies a segmented rotor with different pole widths approach to mitigate torque ripple and electromagnetic vibration for PMSM, which has a lower implementation cost and facilitates mechanized production. The mapping relationship between geometric dimensions and torque performance is obtained, and the optimal dimensions are determined. An 8-pole/48-slot V-shaped PMSM is taken as the original motor, and the influence of engineering error on the torque performance of the presented approach is discussed. The electromagnetic performances and vibration responses of the motor with the presented approach are compared with that of the skewing slot motor to verify the effectiveness of the presented approach. This article proposes a hybrid analytical modeling procedure for the performance parameter estimation of synchronous reluctance machine, including its operation in the region of magnetic saturation. The proposed model better estimated the torque profile through improved translation and stepped transition of rotor flux barriers. The non-linear operation is simulated by considering the global saturation and estimating the machine’s operating point on the magnetization curve of the core material. The procedure formulation focuses on improving the accuracy and rapidness of the iterative design process. The obtained results are validated against an already established design analysis technique, finite-element analysis, and the frequency spectrum analysis of practical machine results. With the improved accuracy and the least requirement of simulation runtime and computational resources, the modeling procedure can be utilized as an initial design iteration tool. This work presents an adaptive feed-forward current fed battery-supported solar water pumping system using a synchronous reluctance motor (SYRM). It incorporates the impact of cross saturation in real time with the position sensorless vector control technique of SYRM. Moreover, a continuous estimation of direct axis inductance (Ld) is incorporated to ensure saturation in SYRM. The burden of the DC link voltage PI controller is relieved by the feed-forward term of an adaptive battery current, which is calculated from the photovoltaic (PV) array power, estimated output power and the estimated motor efficiency. A DC-DC boost converter is used for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of the solar photovoltaic array. A voltage source inverter is employed to control the SYRM-pump drive, and to charge/discharge the battery, a bidirectional DC-DC converter is used. The system provides a cost-effective solution for an uninterruptable and rated discharge of the water supply. The solar PV array behaves as a primary energy source, whereas battery is used as a backup source and is charged by PV array when pump operation is suspended or operating at a lower rating. In this article, a circulating-current-excited switched reluctance generator system using a standard diode rectifier is proposed and examined. It features a dc power source connected in series with the ring-connected windings, which provides the dc-bias current as the excitation current in the windings. Using a series-connected dc power source, a dc-bias current is easily realized in the ac winding. Compared with the existing machine having dc-bias in the ac winding, the proposed generator can provide dc power with a standard diode rectifier. Less active legs and no rotor position sensor are needed for the control of the circulating current of the proposed generator, which increases the reliability of the generation system. The system configuration and the operation principle are introduced in detail. Then, the electromagnetic performance of the proposed generation system is analyzed at both open-circuit and load conditions. The asymmetric current distributions are deduced and verified by the simulations. At last, the prototype is tested under varied operation conditions and the experiments agree well with the analysis. Multiphase machines with a prime number of phases (five and seven) have shown better torque density than machines with other phase numbers. Unfortunately, these machines require a special stator design. Hence, this article proposes general rewinding techniques to obtain a five-phase winding from the existing standard three-phase stator frames. The proposed rewinding techniques are applied to construct a five-phase star-connected synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM 1) and a novel combined star-pentagon winding (SynRM 2). Simple mathematical formulations are introduced to compute the equivalent winding factor. The performance of five-phase SynRMs is analyzed using two-dimensional Ansys Maxwell transient simulations under the same copper volume for both healthy and faulty cases. SynRM 1 and 2 provide 6.56% and 13.35% higher torque compared to the three-phase SynRM at rated current and at optimal current angle. The torque ripple is decreased by 17% and 30%, respectively. Moreover, SynRM 1 and 2 offer a better performance at the faulty case; e.g., at one phase opened, the average torque of SynRM 1 and 2 is 82% and 108% higher compared to the three-phase SynRM. Vernier reluctance machine (VRM) with dc field coils in stator is a competitive rare-earth-free design for variable-speed industrial applications due to its robust structure and controllable excitation, while its torque density is relatively disadvantageous. To address this issue, this article proposes a new armature winding design method for VRM with dc field coils across two stator teeth. The key is to break the traditional winding design principle based on the flux modulation effect of fundamental dc field harmonic, and instead, reconstruct a novel harmonic winding to enhance the utilization factor of the modulated high-order dc field harmonics arising from the unique magnetomotive force distribution of dc field coils across two stator teeth. By this means, the torque density can be improved by 75.6% against the existing poor counterpart. In this article, the machine structure and operation principle are introduced, with emphasis on the high-order dc field harmonics distribution rule and its influence on the armature winding design. By finite element design and optimization, a comparative study is performed to evaluate the electromagnetic performance of VRMs using two different winding configurations with variable slot pole combinations. A prototype is fabricated and tested, and the results agree well with finite element analysis, which verifies the feasibility and advantages of the proposed winding design method. This article presents a new type of double stator swing rotating permanent magnet spherical motor (DSSRPMSM), which can realize swing, rotation, and helical motion and is used in industrial robots, gyroscopes, satellite communications, and other fields. The proposed spherical motor consists of two stators and a hollow rotor with permanent magnet (PM) poles on its inner and outer surfaces. Compared with most spherical motor with hollow coil and traditional PM synchronous motor, the structure of the motor is different and novel, and it is difficult to find a more perfect design theory and method. Thus, this article introduces the new idea of motor design in detail. First, the structure and working principle of the motor are introduced, and the original design of the motor is carried out. The 2-D rough estimation and 3-D FEM accurate simulation calculation are carried out, and the electromagnetic characteristics of the motor are obtained, including magnetic flux density distribution, torque, and loss. The simulation results meet the design specifications of the motor. A prototype was built and tested. The experimental results are in good agreement with the 3-D FEM analysis. The design method provides a theoretical basis for the design of this kind of spherical motor. The research results lay a foundation for the subsequent optimization of the motor. A new partitioned stator field modulation machine (PSFMM) with H-shape permanent magnet (HPM) excitation (HPM-PSFMM) is proposed, which is evolved from the conventional flux-switching machine (FSM) and flux-reversal machine (FRM). The proposed HPM-PSFMM combines the merits of high reliability and good heat dissipation characteristic. In addition, it exhibits high torque production with low torque ripple. Based on the theory of electrical machine operation, the FSM and FRM can be transformed into PSFMM with interior permanent magnet (IPM) and surface-mounted PM (SPM) excitation by changing the position of PM excitation, respectively. It benefits to improve space utilization and increase slot area for a large number of armature windings. For reducing the flux leakage and enhancing the flux density in air gaps, the IPM and SPM excitation are combined into HPM excitation. The iron-pole rotor between the inner and outer stators acts the role of modulator to modulate the magnetic field excited by HPM excitation to couple with the armature reaction for converting electromechanical energy. The evolution process, operating principle, and key design parameters of the proposed HPM-PSFMM are presented. Finally, using the finite element analysis (FEA), it can be proven that the proposed HPM-PSFMM has the merits of high torque production, low flux leakage, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and low torque ripple when compared to other stator-PM machines, which is a desirable choice for high stability applications. The circumferential and axial widths of permanent magnet (PM) pole and E-shape stator pole of linear rotary motor with interlaced PM poles are very influential to the back electromotive force (EMF) and the flux leakage analysis is complex, which causes difficulty in optimization of the motor structure. One of the key issues in optimization design is to calculate the flux leakage accurately. In this article, the main flux and side flux variation laws of stator pole are derived by analytical method. The flux leakage can be divided into the flux leakage between the PM and the mover, flux leakage on the stator tooth tip, and the flux leakage between the adjacent PM poles and stator pole. The 3-D flux leakage calculation model is built, which is suitable for the calculation of magnetic flux based on different motor operating principles. This article deals with the lookup table (LUT) less sensorless control of synchronous reluctance (SyR) machines at zero and low speeds, where LUT-less stands for avoiding the use of flux-map LUTs or other predetermined machine parameters. The new signal-injection-based control scheme called the locus of incremental saliency ratio tracking is presented, where a pulsating high-frequency voltage component is used for position tracking and a second rotating signal-injection is dedicated to online estimating the incremental saliency ratio. A trajectory of constant incremental saliency ratio is used for torque regulation, resulting in stable control at all operating conditions, including overload. This despite the effect of cross-saturation, which is known to introduce position error and harm the control stability progressively with the load. The proposed scheme is validated experimentally on a 1.1-kW SyR machine test bench. Multiphysics analysis and experimental validation of acoustic noise reduction in a high pole count, high power, switched reluctance machine (SRM), through skewing are explored in detail in this work. An iterative optimization strategy covering electromagnetic, structural, and thermal domains is proposed to investigate the effect of different skewing methods and angles on a 24-stator slot/16-rotor pole (24/16) SRM rated at 100 kW. The contributions of this work are twofold. First, electromagnetic impact, considering average torque, torque ripple, radial and tangential air gap forces, of symmetric and asymmetric skewing on stator and rotor is studied in this work. Second, the impact of skewing methods on acoustic noise and vibration performance is studied and presented in detail. The study reveals that skewing both the stator and rotor by the same amount has superior electromagnetic performance over other types of skewing. Multiphysics simulations conducted, predict a 10.5 dBA reduction in the acoustic noise, compared to a baseline design with no skew, for an optimized rotor-stator skewing angle of 13.75°. Finally, 100 kW prototypes of the baseline and the optimized skewed SRM were constructed and subjected to wide speed range testing. A modified configuration for Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Motors (PMaSyRM) is studied in this paper. Conventionally, the PM materials are inserted in the flux barriers region of the rotor. Consequently, the PMs sizing parameters will be restricted to the available space that may limit the efficient use of PMs benefits. In this study, a portion of the rotor structure is replaced with an Interior PM (IPM) rotor so that an axially segmented integration of IPM and SyRM is obtained. Thus, the PMs design is performed specifically in the IPM segment independent of the SyRM scheme, while the SyRM segment remains PM-less. The main motivation of this concept is to improve the contribution of the PM material in the total torque as well as utilizing the special property of the proposed rotor configuration for pulsating torque reduction. A computationally cost-effective algorithm is proposed for the optimal design of IPM-SyRM motor by which a low-power design is carried out for a lightweight electric vehicle. The results for torque profile characteristics, PM volume, power-factor, and efficiency are compared with a conventional PMaSyRM that has been optimally designed as the reference case. In this paper, a novel six-phase outer rotor induction motor equipped with pseudo-concentrated windings is introduced as a robust, reliable, and low-cost solution. Multiple aspects of the proposed motor structure have been investigated such as a design algorithm and an analytical modeling based on the modified winding function considering the skew effect. The effect of using variable number of turns for the coils has been examined on the pseudo-concentrated windings. An appropriate optimization problem has been also defined to maximize the power factor and efficiency and to minimize the output torque ripple. The designed motor has been fabricated to verify the accuracy of the design procedure with an analytical model and a finite element analysis. The torque ripple of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) should be taken into account, as it can have negative effects on a connected gearbox and/or load. In this paper a concept and two realization methods for the reduction of the torque ripple are presented. An optimized alignment of the active elements of the stator leads to a reduction of this torque ripple. The first method proposed here is a four-fold segmented motor, which can reduce the torque ripple by 37.3 %. This can be achieved by segmentation in combination with a clever arrangement of active elements. However, this increases the number of necessary inverters, which increases redundancy and therefore leads to more security. A second method of achieving an equal reduction can be obtained by using a “double stator” motor. In this configuration both stators can be powered together. With this concept, the number of converters is halved compared to the first mentioned solution. This saves electronic components and thus reduces the effort. This article proposes a nonlinear controller based on feedback linearization (FL) for synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) drives which takes into consideration the magnetic saturation. The proposed nonlinear FL control based control technique has been developed starting from the theoretical definition of an original dynamic model of the SynRM taking into consideration both the self- and the cross-saturation effects. Such a control technique permits the dynamics of both the speed and axis flux loops to be maintained constant independently from the load and the saturation of the iron core in both constant flux and variable direct axis flux operating conditions. Finally, sensitivity of the performance of the proposed FL control versus the variation of the main motor parameters has been verified. The proposed technique has been tested experimentally on a suitably developed test setup. This article proposes a new magnetic model self-identification technique for synchronous machines to build the flux-map look-up tables. Provided the shaft is free to turn, an alternating self-acceleration and deceleration sequence is envisaged for identification without a dedicated experimental rig or additional hardware. With respect to previous works, the stator flux and the stator resistance are adapted online during the run, thus eliminating the need for postprocessing and the sensitivity to winding temperature variations during the test. Signal-injection sensorless control for low speeds region are usually assisted with compensation techniques to support the heavy load operations beyond rated conditions. For the standard $d$ -axis pulsating voltage injection, this article analyzes the prospect of using $q$ -axis current-model flux instead of the $q$ -axis current for decoupled position estimation. Through convergence analysis, the feasibility of operation at overload is evaluated for the decoupled scheme against the state-of-art compensation technique and is shown to be a promising candidate for its simplicity and the lack of preprocessing of flux-map. Performance achievable in sensorless control of electrical drives strictly depends on the adopted synchronous machine. The combination of cross-saturation and saliency, both dependent by the current load and the rotor position, makes always the position estimation afflicted by an estimation error. When the machine is highly saturated, the sensorless control can even diverge resulting in a useless drive. Thus, it is of primary importance to know in advance the convergence region of the sensorless drive, i.e., the operating points, where the motor can be successfully controlled without a position sensor. The aim of this article is to show how to compute the estimation error, the saliency, and the convergence region (hereafter called self-sensing capabilities) starting from the flux linkages maps or, more generally, from the incremental inductances. The dependence on the rotor position is also considered. Finite element simulations and experimental measurements validate the proposed model. This article investigates the design methods and performance optimization of segmented-double-stator switched reluctance machine (SDS-SRM). First, two segmented U-shaped single-stator SRMs are introduced, including inner-rotor and outer-rotor constructions. In order to enhance the torque and power density, these two kinds of single-stator SRMs are combined together to constitute an SDS-SRM. Then, the relationships of torque ripple coefficient with the mechanical offset angles of the inner and outer rotor teeth are investigated to obtain the optimal rotor structure, and the corresponding conduction phase sequences for double-stator excitation mode are also analyzed. Furthermore, the flux distributions of the inner and outer stators with different coil magnetic polarities configurations are researched, and it reveals that the phase windings both on inner and outer stators with NSSNNSSN polarities have better magnetic field decoupling characteristics. To evaluate the final topology of the proposed SDS-SRM, the static magnetic characteristics and dynamic performances are presented. Stator and rotor cores of interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors are usually saturated, and the saturation distribution and saturation depth vary with the stator current. Also, their rotor structures are complex; hence, the saturation cannot be accurately reflected by a saturation factor. These considerations lead to the existing equivalent air-gap length models of induction motors and inset permanent magnet (PM) motors no longer suitable for IPM motors. Therefore, based on the consideration of stator and rotor saturation, this article proposes the equivalent air-gap length model of IPM motors expressed by magnetic potentials on the stator inner surface and the rotor outer surface. The proposed equivalent air-gap length model can accurately reflect the influences of complex structure and severe saturation of IPM motors. Compared with the existing models, the proposed one is no longer uniquely determined by motor structure parameters; it is also a function of stator current and rotor position. Furthermore, the obtained equivalent air-gap length model is combined with the winding function and the modified winding function to solve the inductances under different stator currents and different rotor eccentricity states. This article employs grain-oriented (GO) silicon steel in an axial-flux permanent magnet (AFPM) machine to improve its torque and efficiency. Rolling direction of the GO material have been studied to ensure the machine’s main magnetic flux passes through the easy magnetization direction. Based on the study of the electromagnetic characteristics of AFPM machine, GO silicon steel is laminated to form a stator according to a certain lamination direction. The torque and efficiency of the proposed machine with GO material shows an increase in comparison with that of the conventional non-oriented (NO) silicon steel machine under identical conditions. In addition, an equivalent magnetic circuit model is established to illustrate little difference of electromagnetic property under no-load condition for the yokeless stator AFPM using two kinds of silicon steel sheet. Synchronous reluctance motors show nonlinear behavior in the high torque region due to core saturation, especially on the $d$ -axis. In this study, the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) solution is sought in the mathematical frame. First, flux linkage data are obtained from finite element method, and fitted as the plane functions of currents by the least square method. Thereafter, the inductances are derived as binomials in $i_d$ and $i_q$. These analytic expressions of inductances are used in deriving a necessary condition for the MTPA, and constructing an on-line MTPA control method. In this letter, a transformed unsaturated inductance characteristic-based method is proposed for the rotor position of the switched reluctance machine. Due to the magnetic saturation effect, the phase inductance characteristics have a narrow linear region, which increases the difficulty of their analytical expression. To reduce the complexity of the analytical expression, the unsaturated inductance characteristic is transformed from the phase inductance characteristics. Then, a linear model is presented to explicitly describe the relationship between the rotor position and unsaturated phase inductance. Experimental verification is carried out to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. This letter addresses experimental validation of the reduced-order natural speed observer design for position sensorless drive with nonsalient permanent magnet synchronous motor. The natural speed observer and the active flux estimator are connected in a cascaded fashion, which results in a simple sensorless algorithm that needs only to tune one bandwidth parameter for flux estimation and one bandwidth parameter for speed observation. Experimental results of high speed reversal test, zero speed stopping test, and slow speed reversal test are included, where the practice of applying nonzero $d$ -axis current at zero speed has shown to be effective for loaded zero speed stopping test, but it causes zero-speed locked-up at slow speed reversal with acceleration rate of $\rm \text{50}\,r/\text{min}/s$. Four remedies are compared to improve the slow speed reversal test and the proposed method gives almost ramp actual speed waveform, nondiverging $q$ -axis current and smooth transition in position waveform during slow zero speed crossing. A new dynamic expression of the active flux is proposed and with the aid of the active flux concept, the proposed sensorless algorithm is also applicable to various types of ac motors. This article proposes an online torque ripple minimization (TRM) technique using a fuzzy system (FS)-based d-axis current design for interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drives. Existing control-based TRM techniques generally employ optimization algorithms to design the dq-axis currents that attenuate the torque ripples. However, complex iterations applied for the optimization algorithms increase computational complexity, which limits the applicability of such TRM techniques under transient state of the IPMSM drives. Unlike with existing methods, the proposed TRM technique designs reference d-axis current using a computationally efficient algorithm and remarkably minimizes the torque ripples. Moreover, the reference d-axis current is designed online based on an FS to keep the stator current of the IPMSM inside the rated value, especially at the transient state. The proposed TRM strategy is validated through simulation and experimental investigations by using a MATLAB/Simulink software and a prototype IPMSM drive with TI TMS320F28335 digital signal processor. Comparative theoretical and experimental investigations prove that the proposed TRM technique is computationally efficient and ensures more reduced ripples in the electromagnetic torque and dq-axis currents with d-axis current significantly close to zero than conventional maximum torque per ampere based technique without TRM and conventional current control-based TRM technique under critical load conditions. Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have attracted much attention in industry due to the advantages of low cost, robust structure, high fault tolerance and high torque density. However, several disadvantages like high torque ripples and coil temperatures hinder their industrialization for some applications requiring high dynamic performance, like electric vehicles (EVs). In this paper, a multiobjective and multiphysics design optimization method considering both thermal and electromagnetic performance is presented for a 12/10 SRM. First, the topology of the SRM is introduced and the optimal parameters are defined. Then, the electromagnetic finite element model (FEM) is introduced and the 3D transient lumped-parameter thermal model (TLPTM), considering both axial and radial heat transfer for the SRM, is proposed. Second, the objectives and constraints of the optimization are determined. To improve the optimization efficiency, the sequential subspace optimization strategy is employed to find the optimal solution of this high-dimensional design optimization problem. Finally, to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, both simulation and experimental results are given and discussed. This paper presents the overall comparison of four possible topologies of linear switched reluctance motor with segmented secondary (LSRMSS) as candidates for vertical actuation systems. The analytical design approach which treats each unit of LSRM as independent force generator is applied to design the four machines. All the four machines can be seen as 2-unit force generator although they have different winding configurations and topologies. In this case, the four machines can be designed to have similar force profile due to the inherent modular characteristics of LSRMSS. Force production, active material mass, end effects, copper loss and thrust density have been considered as well as the dynamic performance. The results indicate that the topology with toroidally wound mover has the highest force density and payload ratio capability. This article presents a flux linkage-based direct model predictive current control approach that achieves favorable performance both during steady-state and transient operation. The former is achieved by computing the optimal time instants at which a new switch position is applied to the converter. To this end, the future current behavior is not computed based on the machine inductances or inductance look-up tables; instead, flux linkage maps are utilized to predict the trajectory of the magnetic flux linkage, and subsequently of the current. This is advantageous for electric drives with noticeable magnetic nonlinearity in terms of saturation and/or cross-coupling effects. Hence, by using flux linkage maps in the prediction process, the evolution of the stator current can be calculated more accurately, enabling the controller to make better switching decisions. Moreover, the discussed predictive controller exhibits excellent dynamic performance owing to its direct control nature, i.e., the control and modulation tasks are performed in one computational stage rendering a dedicated modulation stage redundant. A direct-on-line synchronous reluctance motor (DOLSynRM) with a rotor topology defined by the natural flux line curve approach is studied as an alternative to an induction motor (IM) using a 1.5 kW, 50 Hz synchronous reluctance motor as an example. If an IM stator is used, a direct squirrel cage rotor replacement by a synchronous reluctance rotor equipped with a damper winding might not guarantee a sufficient starting performance. To ensure the strong enough starting capability, the natural flux line curve approach was modified in the motor design. The proposed approach was applied in the optimization of the DOLSynRM using a genetic algorithm. The optimization results show a clear tendency in the rotor design when trying to achieve a reliable starting capability and to maximize the steady-state performance of the DOLSynRM. Both the stator design and the rotor diameter of the optimized DOLSynRM are different from those of a corresponding squirrel cage IM. A DOLSynRM prototype was built and tested. It showed about a 5.4%-unit higher efficiency than the original prototype IM and acceptable starting performance under the rated load condition. The starting capabilities of the motors under study are considered with different loads. The locked rotor apparent power and current stay below permissible limits in both the IM and the DOLSynRM. In this article, split-tooth stator slot permanent magnet (PM) machines, which have high fault-tolerant capability, are proposed. Compared with the existing 12-slot 10-pole (12S10P) stator slot PM machine, the torque can be improved by 66% by properly choosing the split tooth number and other geometric parameters. It is found that two split teeth stator slot PM machine (ST2) shows the best torque characteristics among the stator slot PM machines with different split tooth number. To further illustrate the merits and demerits of ST2, a conventional 6S4P surface mounted PM machine (SPMM) and a 6S4P variable flux reluctance machine serve as the benchmarks to compare with the 6S11P ST2, at both open circuit condition and load condition. The 6S11P ST2 shows 68% higher torque over the 6S4P VFRM. Although the torque of the 6S11P ST2 is around half of the 6S4P SPMM, the former has 70% higher torque per PM volume than the latter. Furthermore, demagnetization analyses under three-phase short-circuit and pure d-axis currents show that the 6S11P ST2 has much better demagnetization withstand capability over the 6S4P SPMM. This paper mainly takes a 6/4 switched reluctance motor (SRM) as an example to analyze the temperature of the motor. In order to establish the equivalent thermal circuit model (ETCM) conveniently, the mechanical structure of the motor is simplified to a certain extent, and the characteristic nodes are divided. Then the heat transfer process in the rotor region, the stator region and the whole motor during the operation of the motor is analyzed, and the ETCM of those regions are established respectively. This method of establishing ETCM is also applicable to superconducting motors. Based on the basic principles of heat transfer, the calculation method of thermal resistance in each ETCM is given in this paper. Then, the three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) temperature field model of the motor is built and compared with the ETCM. Finally, the accuracy of the ETCM is verified by experiments. In this article, we developed an improved hybrid field model (IHFM) to predict the on-load performance of the interior permanent-magnet (IPM) motors considering both iron saturation and slotting effect. It combines the airgap analytical model based on the modified conformal mapping with the reluctance mesh method for stator and rotor. The reluctance mesh method can accurately predict the rotor saturation and tooth-tip saturation even their field distribution is complicated due to the armature reaction. Besides, IHFM will significantly accelerate computation speed using the analytical model for airgap region while keeping high accuracy. The article presents a torque ripple minimization process using symmetrical rotor flux barrier shaping for synchronous reluctance (SyncRel) machines. High-performance applications demand stringent torque-speed, torque ripple, noise, and vibration requirements to satisfy the overall system performance. An iterative design approach incorporating electromagnetic, structural, and thermal analyses is presented that led to the design of a SyncRel motor with low torque ripple and minimized second-order vibration mode. The contributions demonstrated that the 30-slot, 4-pole SrncRel machine is a viable option for high-performance and packaging-constrained applications. Global response surface method that has the capability for parallel analysis has been used for the multiobjective optimization problem. A 2D finite element (FE) tool with the HyperStudy optimization routine has been used to implement the proposed design process. A quick and easy-to-use motor parameter-based model along with 2D FE analysis is used to evaluate the performance of the optimized design. In this article, a high-precision equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) model is first proposed for slotted permanent-magnet (PM) limited-angle torque motor (LATM) with nonuniform teeth, which leads to potential application in swing system substituting a lower torque density of the slotless structure. By the proposed relatively fine division method of magnetic reluctance in the stator tooth-tip segments, air-gap regions, and PM poles, the proposed EMC model can fully consider armature reaction and magnetic saturation problem. Subsequently, a multiobjective optimization method based on the EMC model is proposed to improve torque performance. Finite-element analysis is employed to validate the EMC model and optimization results. Following that, a curved nonwounded tooth shape is carried out and further optimized to decrease magnetic saturation of stator teeth and significantly improve symmetry of torque profile about stable equilibrium point, compared with the traditional straight tooth shape. Finally, the slotted LATM with curved teeth is prototyped, and its experimental results are presented and discussed. A variable reluctance electric machine with a two-degree of freedom rotor motion characterized by rotation around the center of the rotor and orbiting around the center of the stator is studied. One motivation for adopting such rotor motion would be to allow torque generation through both the radial and tangential components of the electromagnetic forces created in the airgap, as opposed to common rotary machines in which torque is a byproduct of only the tangential component of the airgap electromagnetic forces. Furthermore, the rotor motion provides a built-in gearing action similar to that of a cycloidal drive, which allows natural torque multiplication and the tight integration of the electromagnetic and mechanical systems. The two-degree of freedom rotor motion also results in a counter-intuitive inertia characteristic of this machine concept which is elaborated in this paper for the first time. Due to the reluctance nature of the torque, and because of the distinctive rotor motion profile which resembles the motion of a cycloid, the studied machine is called a cycloidal reluctance (CR) electric machine (CRM). In this paper, the principle of operation of the CRM is explained, and its performance is compared to a counterpart switched reluctance machine (SRM). Noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) issue in switched reluctance machines (SRMs), originating from their doubly salient structure and unique principle of operation, is addressed in this work by proposing a structural design modification in the stator, which increases stiffness to mass ratio of the structure. A 24-slot 16-pole (24s/16p) SRM designed with the aim of automotive application is studied here for the NVH optimization, at different target operating points, using stator pole bridges. Stator pole bridges link consecutive stator teeth to provide additional stiffness to the stator structure. Average torque reduction due to flux shorting in stator pole bridges is tackled by proposing a low-permeability material, with considerable stiffness, which has not yet seen its’ application in SRM NVH domain. Multiphysics aspects of stator pole bridge design encompassing electromagnetic radial force, mechanical stress, steady-state temperature distribution, and acoustic noise analyses are presented in this article. Possible manufacturing issues are considered during the design phase and appropriate measures are implemented to facilitate easier construction of two 100-kW prototypes. The final design with stator pole bridges and a baseline design without any stator pole bridges are prototyped, after rigorous multiphysics optimization, for extensive testing. Experimental results verify simulation outputs and report a maximum noise reduction of 12.52 dBA in the stator pole bridge model compared to the baseline SRM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article deals with an improved control for synchronous reluctance motor (SyRM)-based photovoltaic (PV) water pumping system, eliminating the speed controller of position sensorless field-oriented control (FOC) of SyRM. The solar water pump drive involves two stages of power conversion. The reference quadrature axis current of FOC is estimated from available PV array power that is being continuously tracked for maximum power point. This eliminates the requirement of an additional speed controller. This improves the transient behavior of overall control under dynamic conditions such as varying solar radiation. A pole is eliminated from overall characteristic equation of open-loop dc link voltage control transfer function. As a result, a single proportional integrator controller satisfactorily controls the whole pumping system. The system is much easier to tune, and by default, immune to aging and variation in pump's constant. This improves fidelity and reduces the overall cost of the system. Performance of this system is validated through a developed laboratory prototype of solar PV array-fed SyRM drive for water pumping. To solve the coupling between torque and suspension force in the conventional bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM) and improve suspension performances, the novel hybrid stator type bearingless switched reluctance motor (HSTBSRM) with double-slice structures is proposed. The torque magnetic circuit is completely independent of the suspension magnetic circuit, and the natural decoupling between the torque and suspension force is achieved. First, the structure, magnetic circuits, suspension, and rotation mechanism are analyzed. The mathematical models of radial suspension forces are deduced in detail. According to the maximum radial bearing capacity, the main parameters of the suspension part are designed. Acoustic noise reduction is one of the main topics of switched reluctance motor (SRM) developments. One of the effective methods is flattening three-phase radial force sum. This method is verified in experiments by optimizing the current profile. Novel current waveforms have been proposed recently for acoustic noise reduction without sacrificing the efficiency in the 18/12 SRM, which has competitive power density, torque density, peak efficiency, and outer dimensions compared with the permanent magnet motor employed in hybrid electric vehicles. In this article, electro-mechanical analysis and acoustic analysis are carried out to verify acoustic noise reduction in the 18/12 SRM. This article compares the doubly salient permanent magnet machine (DSPMM) having 18/13-pole number combination with 18/17-pole biased flux permanent magnet machine (BFPMM) to verify its improvement in torque characteristics. In such DSPMM, the stator/rotor-pole number combination is 18/13 rather than the conventional one (i.e., 18/12) to achieve balanced three phases, sinusoidal phase flux linkage and back electromotive force (back EMF), small cogging torque, and low torque ripple. On the other hand, an 18/17-pole BFPMM having the similar structure with the 18/13-pole DSPMM is analyzed, which has the best torque performance among such machines with the same stator pole number. To further improve average torque, the inner-type flux focusing (IFC) method is employed in both 18/13-pole DSPMM and 18/17-pole BFPMM. Then, both machines are optimized under the fixed copper loss and envelope size. The comparison shows that both machines have comparably small torque ripple while the 18/13-pole DSPMM with IFC (IFC-DSPMM) exhibits 35% higher torque density and 100% higher ratio of torque to PM volume.
