Most of the existing diagnosis techniques for interturn short circuits (ITSCs) in switched reluctance motors (SRMs) suffer from three major issues. 1) The problem of lower sensitivity where the system cannot detect an ITSC if a lower number of turns are short-circuited; 2) Interference of load variation on the detection reliability in which the fault index might initiate false alarm without any fault; 3) The dependency of the diagnosis system on the control strategy on which the motor is operating. This article proposes a novel method to diagnose ITSCs in SRMs independent of control schemes with better sensitivity and reliability using the signal injection technique. In SRMs, not all the phases take part in the torque production at any instant. The idle or inactive phase is injected with a high-frequency (HF) voltage signal for a preselected injection ratio within an electrical cycle. Any change in the winding parameters owing to an ITSC fault is deciphered by monitoring the HF currents generated in the phase windings. In this article, a wireless resolver is proposed and implemented for wireless switched reluctance (SR) motors, which can detect the rotor position and transfer the information to the primary side without involving any battery storage or active components at the secondary side. The key is to integrate wireless power transfer (WPT) into a variable reluctance resolver to detect and transmit the rotor position. Compared with previous wireless SR motors adopting the Hall effect position encoder and Bluetooth communication, the robustness is highly improved, and the communication delay caused by the connection interval can be solved. Therefore, the proposed system takes the definite advantages of better dynamic performance and sealability. Besides, there is no need to specially design the SR motor, as all existing SR motors and other similar kinds of motors can readily employ this wireless resolver. An experimental prototype has been built for verification, which works well from 100 to 900 rpm with 20 mm WPT distance, and the additional power for position detection can be limited to 1.05 W while the motor consumes 54 W. In this article, a leaf spring insertion to the stator back iron is proposed to reduce vibration and acoustic noise in a switched reluctance machine (SRM). The back iron of the tooth tip is curved out and the material made up of carbon spring steel is placed to dampen the vibration due to radial force. A 6/4 stator/rotor pole SRM is designed and its natural vibration mode frequencies are determined through finite-element analyses. The optimal current waveform is applied to the SRM model using the multidisciplinary coupled simulation method to determine the radial force with the harmonic orders. In the final step, the proposed leaf spring architecture is optimized to achieve the most dampening for the effective radial force harmonic orders. Due to their robustness and adaptability, position estimators based on the extended Kalman filter have been used in permanent magnet synchronous motors for decades. The time has come to extend their use to reluctance motors as well and this work focuses on the elements that hinder the transition. All passes through the availability of an accurate and analytical magnetic model, which is obtained by Artificial Intelligence tools. It is proved that the sensorless control of synchronous reluctance motors using the extended Kalman filter is possible over broad speed and torque ranges. This article proposes an online diagnosis scheme for transistor faults of asymmetric half-bridge converter (AHBC) in switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. In order to extract more information from the phase current to identify faults, based on the conventional current measurement method, two novel current measurement methods are presented by reconstructing current sensors. According to the novel current measurement methods, a current prediction method is raised. The phase current at the kth sampling time is available so that the estimated current can be calculated. The fault can be detected and located by analyzing the given and actual switching states, which are deduced by comparing the measured and estimated currents. Compared with existing methods, the proposed scheme can be applied to diagnosis of multiple faults in n-phase AHBC, which can operate at various control strategies and chopping modes. With a single current sensor in each phase, the scheme will not increase the cost and complexity of the SRM drive. Furthermore, the scheme does not require complicated computation, making it easy to implement online. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed scheme. Thanks to the absence of rotor windings and permanent magnets, switched reluctance motors have a small weight construction. The integration of a modular power converter in a switched reluctance motor leads to a highly compact and fault-tolerant motor drive with small weight and high power density. In this article, a polygon-retrofitted integration topology is proposed for switched reluctance motors. Both the switched reluctance motor and the power converter are cooled with one shared cooling circuit. The power converter is designed and implemented using silicon carbide technology for its low losses and small thermal resistance. The proposed integration topology is extensively studied using multiphysics modeling and experimental measurements on a fully integrated rotating setup. In this article, a low-ripple continuous control set (CCS) model predictive torque control (MPTC) method for switched reluctance machines (SRMs) is proposed. The inherent high nonlinearity of the SRMs makes it difficult to solve the optimization problem in the CCS MPTC algorithm analytically. To address this issue, an equivalent linear SRM model is adopted, and the cost function is also properly modified. Then, with the torque boundary values provided by executing the voltage vectors of an improved switching table, the optimization problem in the CCS MPTC method becomes simple and analytically solvable. The Lagrange multiplier method is employed to solve this optimization problem analytically and generate the optimum torque reference values for the active phases. Based on the estimated torque variation rates, the duty cycles for each phase are calculated. Extensive simulation and experimental tests are carried out in a four-phase 8/6 SRM setup. These testing results reveal that the proposed CCS MPTC method shows much lower torque ripples and current ripples in a wide speed range with a low computational burden than the existing finite control set MPTC methods. A typical flywheel energy storage system (FESS) includes an electrical machine, a flywheel, and magnetic bearings, which are independent of each other. Therefore, the structure of FESS is complicated, which leads to the problems of high cost and low integration. This article presents a novel stator PM excitation solid rotor machine (SPE-SRM) for FESS, which integrates an electrical machine, flywheels, and a magnetic bearing. The design method of the SPE-SRM is presented specifically. First, the structure and operation principle of the SPE-SRM are illustrated. Second, the design and optimization of the flywheel-rotor are presented with considering of power, energy storage, and mechanical strength. Third, the magnetic equivalent circuit of the SPE-SRM is established to simplify the design. Besides, the armature reaction and leakage flux factor are investigated. Fourth, the performance indexes, including torque, suspension force, no-load back electromotive force (back-EMF), losses, and temperature rise are fully analyzed by the finite element analysis. Finally, a 22 kW prototype is manufactured and tested. The rationality of the concept and design is validated by experiments. This article proposes a new “switched lumped reluctance network”-based equivalent circuit for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) under saturation. The proposed circuit incorporates the effects of the position-dependent switching of the phase windings and changing position of the rotor with respect to the stator. This feature enables the analysis of non-uniform and dynamic variation of flux in motor iron sections along with that in the air gap and their effects on the phase current. The proposed model, thus, emulates the operation of an SRM, more truly, through an equivalent circuit approach. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified by comparing the analytical results of five different stator–rotor sets (having different air gaps and tooth angular widths) with the finite-element method (FEM) simulated results and found to be in excellent mutual agreement. A novel position estimation strategy based on lag compensation-assisted adaptive quasi-fading Kalman filter (LC-AQFKF) is proposed for synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) sensorless drive in this article. In LC-QFKF, the quasi-fading factor is derived to avoid the harsh assumptions of conventional adaptive fading Kalman filter, and accessibility of the method is improved while ensuring the estimation accuracy. The computational efficiency of LC-AQFKF is promoted by introducing the quasi-fading factor into the prediction error covariance matrix. Moreover, the frequency characteristic of AQFKF-based active back electromotive force observer is analyzed, and the phase lag problem in high-speed situations caused by the low-pass filtering property of AQFKF is overcome. In this way, the estimation accuracy of the rotor position is significantly enhanced. Besides, the double dynamic position compensation method is put forward to strengthen the position estimation performance of sensorless SynRM drive under dynamic conditions. This work contributes for the development of a low-cost reliable switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive for domestic water supply requirements. The work presents an adaptive gain super twisting sliding mode observer (AGST-SMO) for SRM drive with an enhanced transient behaviour. An online updation of sliding gains is proposed while satisfying the stability conditions of the observer. Performance of this observer is compared with the existing sliding mode observers. The developed SRM drive has a dedicated-port configuration to integrate the sources with SRM-pump and a domestic equipment, with reliable operation at low cost. For grid-side power quality issues, an improved linear sinusoidal tracer (ILST) is employed for the control of voltage source converter (VSC). ILST has inherent merits like active harmonics filtering, power factor correction, and fast dynamic response. The control of the drive system is validated by developing laboratory scale prototype and the system performance is examined at different conditions. Acquisition of the accurate phase currents is indispensable for the control and protection of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives for electric transportation applications. Existing phase current reconstruction techniques for SRM are implemented under the current control techniques, which generate large torque pulsations. Therefore, the direct torque control (DTC) method can be adopted to minimize torque pulsations and to enhance transient performance in electrified vehicles. However, the existing current estimation methods cannot be applied to DTC strategies due to the simultaneous conduction of all phases at any switching instant. Furthermore, it offers a lower torque per ampere ($T/A$) ratio and draws a high source current. This article addresses the aforementioned concerns by proposing a cost-effective phase current reconstruction method with an improved DTC strategy for a 4-kW four-phase SRM drive. This method employs a 16-sector partition method with a new voltage vector selection by detecting zero-current regions of each phase. As a result, the long-tail currents can be avoided, thereby limiting the simultaneous conduction of all phases. The simulation and test results show that the proposed DTC has minimal torque pulsations, high $T/A$ ratio, low converter losses, and lower source current ripple in comparison to the existing DTC schemes under various operating conditions. A novel electromagnetic force estimation using strain gauges attached to a laminated iron core method is proposed. Based on the strain gauge output, the electromagnetic force that occurs on the air-gap surface of the core is estimated with compensations for magnetostriction and nonuniform strain distribution. The proposed method is validated by comparing the electromagnetic force calculated in the finite element analysis and an experiment on a pair of C-shaped laminated iron cores. This article focuses on the force estimation in a pair of simple C-shaped cores, which are aimed at being a part of the stator and rotor of a switched reluctance machine. This paper presents a novel active power control scheme for SRMs that are used as S/G units at MEAs; the proposed method uses a vector-controlled SAF, facilitating the acceleration of the SRM during starter mode and the efficient power control of the SRG at various operational points during generator mode. Moreover, an energy storage unit is incorporated in the SAF, aiming at enhancing the SRM's starting torque production and taking full advantage of the SRG's energy generation capability, through the appropriate phases’ magnetization regulation that is imposed by the developed adaptive SAF vector control. In addition, the proposed scheme provides enhanced FRTC during both modes of operation. The mathematical analysis is verified through MATLAB/Simulink simulations, while the performance of the S/G concept under study is evaluated via real-time CHIL tests, with the use of the dSPACE 1202 (MicroLabBox) platform and the 16-bit dsPIC30F4011 microcontroller. As one of the promising power interfaces between the energy storage components and the dc link, dual active bridge (DAB) converters have gained extensive researches. Its reliability and healthy operation under one or even multiple unexpected open-circuit faulty conditions have become one of the main design challenges. Conventional fault detection (FD) and fault isolation (FI) methods exhibit obvious limitations in terms of detection speed, number of FD signatures, universality, accuracy, computational burden, and implementation cost due to the added sensors. To fill in this gap, this article presents a robust, fast, accurate, and low-cost FD and FI method for DAB converters, which is applicable under various operational conditions. The proposed method will adopt the differential switch node voltage between the primary and secondary bridge of DAB converters as the universal fault signature for complete FD and FI. The corresponding fault diagnostic circuit is simple, compact, low cost, and easy in implementation. This sensorless fault diagnostic technique can detect the switch open-circuit fault within a quarter of a switching cycle and realize the fault isolation accurately. A DAB prototype with a fault diagnostic circuit was designed, and main experimental results under various faulty conditions were provided to validate the advantages of the proposed method. Compared with the traditional control method, the direct torque control and direct force control method significantly reduces the torque ripple and the root-mean-square current of the phase winding in the single-winding bearingless switched reluctance motor. However, due to the unreasonable selection of voltage vectors and full cycle control, this method has some problems, such as too many control objects, excessive switching times, and low torque–ampere ratio. This article proposes an improved method for the abovementioned problems. First, the turn-on angle and conduction region of each phase winding are chosen as the control targets, and the operation principle is introduced accordingly. Second, according to the difference of the torque generated by the neighboring phases, the output torque can be distributed more properly to obtain the higher torque–ampere ratio in the commutation region. Finally, the sectors divided in the electrical space are reorganized and the corresponding voltage vectors are optimized. Experimental results show that the proposed method can secure lower torque ripples, fewer switching times, and copper loss. In addition, the torque–ampere ratio is improved as well. This article focusses on power quality issues related with the operation of a wind energy conversion system employing a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG), integrated with a solar photovoltaic array, under unbalanced, and distorted grid conditions. The multiple-order DFIG electromagnetic torque ripples and grid active power ripples, resulting from the unbalanced and distorted grid, can be mitigated, however, at the cost of highly unbalanced and distorted currents. This article provides a possible solution towards a tradeoff by developing a flexible ripple minimization technique based on a cross-feedback extended second order generalized integrator for harmonics sequence separation (CextSOGI-HSS). The CextSOGI-HSS based current compensation enables a controlled minimization of ripple as per the customizable flexibility quotient. Furthermore, the current compensation technique employs an improved recursive least squares (IRLS) adaptive filtering algorithm for processing DFIG stator currents and local load currents. The IRLS algorithm improves grid currents harmonics spectra by filtering-out higher order harmonics from DFIG stator currents and nonlinear load currents, meanwhile, the effects of any load or stator currents unbalance on grid currents are also mitigated. This article studies the transmit beamforming security in the dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) system, where the radar beam also serves as the artificial jamming to suppress potential eavesdropper channels. Unlike previous researches, which assumed that the lone target might be a potential eavesdropper on the adversary side, this paper analyses a more generic scenario in which the eavesdroppers’ channel state information (CSI) is unknown. The eavesdropping rate should be limited to guarantee transmission confidentiality, which is intractable owing to the unknown CSI. To address this issue, we present the long-term eavesdropping signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) as a more tractable security metric. Based on the long-term eavesdropping SINR, the sum rate maximization (SRM) and jamming power maximization (JPM) transmission scheme are investigated. For the SRM scheme, we propose a zero-forcing (ZF) suboptimal algorithm to solve the non-convex fractional programming (FP) problem, and for the JPM scheme, the resultant problem is solved via the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique. This article proposes an improved method for the position signal evaluation of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. It can perform accurate position signal reconstruction based on the inductance, and greatly increase the fault tolerance of SRM in complex environments. It includes the position signal fault diagnosis (PSFD), position signal estimation, and fault-tolerant control (FTC). First, the installation and principle of the position sensor is introduced to show the function of the position signal in SRM drive system. Then, to overcome the limitation of application range of the conventional diagnosis method, a new PSFD method based on grey prediction model is proposed. Besides, a position estimation method based on the inflection point of the inductance is proposed. According to the estimated position, FTCs are carried out when position sensors are faulty. In this article, a circulating-current-excited switched reluctance generator system using a standard diode rectifier is proposed and examined. It features a dc power source connected in series with the ring-connected windings, which provides the dc-bias current as the excitation current in the windings. Using a series-connected dc power source, a dc-bias current is easily realized in the ac winding. Compared with the existing machine having dc-bias in the ac winding, the proposed generator can provide dc power with a standard diode rectifier. Less active legs and no rotor position sensor are needed for the control of the circulating current of the proposed generator, which increases the reliability of the generation system. The system configuration and the operation principle are introduced in detail. Then, the electromagnetic performance of the proposed generation system is analyzed at both open-circuit and load conditions. The asymmetric current distributions are deduced and verified by the simulations. At last, the prototype is tested under varied operation conditions and the experiments agree well with the analysis. A new partitioned stator field modulation machine (PSFMM) with H-shape permanent magnet (HPM) excitation (HPM-PSFMM) is proposed, which is evolved from the conventional flux-switching machine (FSM) and flux-reversal machine (FRM). The proposed HPM-PSFMM combines the merits of high reliability and good heat dissipation characteristic. In addition, it exhibits high torque production with low torque ripple. Based on the theory of electrical machine operation, the FSM and FRM can be transformed into PSFMM with interior permanent magnet (IPM) and surface-mounted PM (SPM) excitation by changing the position of PM excitation, respectively. It benefits to improve space utilization and increase slot area for a large number of armature windings. For reducing the flux leakage and enhancing the flux density in air gaps, the IPM and SPM excitation are combined into HPM excitation. The iron-pole rotor between the inner and outer stators acts the role of modulator to modulate the magnetic field excited by HPM excitation to couple with the armature reaction for converting electromechanical energy. The evolution process, operating principle, and key design parameters of the proposed HPM-PSFMM are presented. Finally, using the finite element analysis (FEA), it can be proven that the proposed HPM-PSFMM has the merits of high torque production, low flux leakage, low total harmonic distortion (THD), and low torque ripple when compared to other stator-PM machines, which is a desirable choice for high stability applications. In this work, to characterize the radiated emission from electronic circuits in shielding enclosure, an improved electric dipole-based source reconstruction method (SRM) is developed. Moreover, by resorting to this reconstructed equivalent source, the estimation of electromagnetic interference (EMI) between different circuit modules in the enclosure can be conveniently and accurately evaluated. Different from the free-space SRM, the equivalent dipoles of the proposed SRM are directly placed over the shielding box enclosed circuit board, and the numerical Green’s function (NGF) is developed to bridge the connection between the equivalent dipoles and the planar scanned magnetic near-field. With the NGF strategy, the effects of surrounding environments (including the presence of substrate, ground plane, and shielding enclosure) are inclusively considered, which makes the proposed SRM valid for any complex EM environments in theory. Since the proposed SRM also has the capability of reproducing the radiated emission inside the shielding enclosure, it is critically helpful to evaluate the EMI between different circuit modules inside the shielding enclosure. To reach this aim, the Rayleigh-Carson Reciprocity theorem is referred, in which the original EM coupling problem is decomposed into the “forward problem” and “reverse problem.” A Huygens box enclosing the victim circuit module is built and the EM fields on the box are obtained using the reconstructed dipoles in both problems. Then the EMI can be calculated accordingly. Therefore, the novelty and merits of the proposed approach are threefold: 1) the physically-based equivalent dipole model considers the interactions between the radiation sources and the surrounding objects, leading to the accurate prediction of radiated emissions both outside and inside the enclosure; 2) due to the utilization of the NGF, there is no approximation involved in the solution of the dipole’s radiation, thus improving the calculation precision; and 3) the near-field coupling between multiple electronic circuit modules inside the shielding enclosure can be identified precisely, which is useful for diagnostics of radiation sources. A novel method to suppress the force ripple of switched reluctance linear motors (SRLMs) based on predictive-fuzzy control is proposed in this article. Generally, the force ripple mainly occurs in the commutation area, resulting from the dropping force of the outgoing phase that cannot match the rising force of the incoming phase. The force distribution function (FDF) is a suitable method for controlling the forces of the outgoing phase and incoming forces during the commutation area. However, the controller calculation takes time and the motor shows inductive behavior, so the control signal, which is the reference current in FDF, always lags the reference force, which weakens the effect of the FDF control. Considering this problem, a method of predictive-fuzzy control is proposed in this article. The current can be controlled in advance by predicting the force, which reduces the appearance of the negative electromagnetic force, which is beneficial to improving the efficiency of the motor, and the mutual inductance is also considered in the predictive model. Additionally, a fuzzy controller is employed, and adaptive parameters of the control system are adopted. To validate the proposed control system, experimental verification is performed on a 500 W 6/4 double-sided SRLM, showing that the proposed method has a better force ripple suppression performance than the FDF control. This article illustrates a method for sensorless control of a switched reluctance motor. The detection of the time instants for switching between the working phases is determined based on the evaluation of the switching frequency of the hysteresis current controllers for appropriately selected sensing phases. Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have recently attracted researchers’ attention owing to their robust mechanical construction, high thermal tolerance, and strong cost-effectiveness, which are promising for vehicle propulsion. However, they tend to generate large ripples in the torque and input currents to the inverter; this deteriorates the driving comfort, and damages the battery lifetime. Preceding articles have investigated using the phase currents of SRMs to eliminate these ripples. However, these articles had difficulties in sufficiently eliminating these ripples in operations under magnetic saturation. This article further evolves one of these preceding articles, and proposes a derivation method for the phase-current waveform for improving the elimination of the torque and input-current ripples in operation under magnetic saturation. The proposed method analytically determines the phase-current waveform based on a nonlinear behavior model of the SRM while considering the magnetic saturation. A finite-element-method-based simulation and experiment are performed to evaluate the proposed method. These results reveal the successful reduction of the torque and input-current ripples under the magnetic saturation relative to a preceding study, supporting the appropriateness of the proposed method. The permanent magnet linear motor (PMLM) has a variety of outstanding topological structures, such as flux switch structure and transverse flux structure. However, the inherited cogging force of PMLM is difficult to reduce without thrust damage. To solve the above-mentioned problem, this article investigates the thrust force, based on a novel flux-switching transverse-flux PMLM (FSTFPMLM) with a simple structure systematically, and provides the guidance to design the FSTFPMLM to achieve a larger thrust, with smaller cogging force. First, the basic structure and working principle of the FSTFPMLM are introduced. Second, an equivalent permeance model of the FSTFPMLM is proposed to calculate the thrust force, including cogging force, permanent magnet thrust, and winding reluctance force. Then, the leading parameters’ influence on the thrust force is investigated; it is concluded that the method effectively minimizes the cogging force and increases the thrust force. Finally, the prototype is manufactured, experiments are performed, and the experimental results agree well with the finite-element method results. This article verifies the effectiveness and practicability of the motor and the proposed analysis method, pointing out the motor's outstanding advantages in reducing cogging force while maintaining high thrust force. Multiphysics analysis and experimental validation of acoustic noise reduction in a high pole count, high power, switched reluctance machine (SRM), through skewing are explored in detail in this work. An iterative optimization strategy covering electromagnetic, structural, and thermal domains is proposed to investigate the effect of different skewing methods and angles on a 24-stator slot/16-rotor pole (24/16) SRM rated at 100 kW. The contributions of this work are twofold. First, electromagnetic impact, considering average torque, torque ripple, radial and tangential air gap forces, of symmetric and asymmetric skewing on stator and rotor is studied in this work. Second, the impact of skewing methods on acoustic noise and vibration performance is studied and presented in detail. The study reveals that skewing both the stator and rotor by the same amount has superior electromagnetic performance over other types of skewing. Multiphysics simulations conducted, predict a 10.5 dBA reduction in the acoustic noise, compared to a baseline design with no skew, for an optimized rotor-stator skewing angle of 13.75°. Finally, 100 kW prototypes of the baseline and the optimized skewed SRM were constructed and subjected to wide speed range testing. In this article, a novel model predictive torque control (MPTC) method for switched reluctance machines (SRMs) is proposed based on the equivalent linear SRM model and the improved switching table. First, an improved switching table with only six switching states is developed based on the inductance characteristics. The adoption of this improved switching table not only reduces the computational burden by 25% but also improves the torque control performance and system efficiency at high-speed region. However, the look-up-table (LUT) based MPTC methods suffer from occupying numerous storage space. To ease this issue, the simple linear SRM model is utilized. The flux-linkage and torque equivalent transformations are introduced to address the difference between the linear and nonlinear SRM models. With these transformations, the MPTC realized on the linear SRM model is proposed. Compared to 1530 storage units consumption to store three two-dimensional (2-D) LUTs in the LUT-based MPTC methods, the proposed method only occupies 228 storage units. Experimental results on an 8/6 SRM setup verify that the proposed method effectively eliminates the commutation torque ripple with lower execution time, less storage space, and improves the torque control performance at a high-speed range compared with the conventional LUT-based method. In this paper, a finite-control-set model predictive direct torque control (FCS-MPDTC) method is proposed to reduce the torque ripple of a segmented switched reluctance motor (SSRM) at the low-speed stage. Firstly, the prediction dynamic model is established, and the phase torque can be predicted by detecting phase current and rotor position signals. Then, the principle of power converter and selection of voltage vectors are introduced and presented. Considering torque ripple reduction, flux tracking performance and copper losses reduction, the cost function with phase torque, the amplitude of flux linkage and phase current, is established to select optimal voltage vector to control the power converter. In addition, the torque sharing function (TSF) is employed to distribute total torque to phase torque for further torque ripple reduction. Finally, the direct torque control (DTC) is selected as the comparison method, performance of MPDTC is verified by simulation and experiment results. Special attention has been paid to two-phase switched reluctance motors (SRMs) as they have fewer power electronics components compared to three- or multi-phase ones. However, their main drawbacks are the lack of starting torque and a predetermined direction of rotation. This paper proposes a new self-starting technique for two-phase SRMs, which has superiorities over the previous approaches. In the proposed topology, the flux paths are shorter, and thus the required magnetomotive force is smaller, which reduces losses. The design procedure is explained. Two- and three-dimensional finite element method (FEM) is employed in the analysis. Also, the motor is prototyped, and two test setups for torque-angle measurement and control study are used. The dynamic behavior of the motor is studied applying single-pulse control and current hysteresis control strategies. The experimental results confirm the results obtained by FEM. This paper proposes a new position sensorless method for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive control based on a sliding mode observer using nonlinear Fourier flux linkage model. First, to obtain an accurate mathematical model of SRM for establishment of sliding mode position observer (SMPO), an analytical method based on Fourier polynomial function is introduced to regress the nonlinear relationship between flux linkage, position and current. Then, a new SMPO is designed in detail to estimate the rotor position, including the establishment of SRM model of sliding mode observer, and analysis of estimation error and convergence conditions of SMPO. Finally, position sensorless control of SRM drive based on SMPO is carried out in terms of accuracy and robustness in simulation. The torque ripple of a switched reluctance motor (SRM) should be taken into account, as it can have negative effects on a connected gearbox and/or load. In this paper a concept and two realization methods for the reduction of the torque ripple are presented. An optimized alignment of the active elements of the stator leads to a reduction of this torque ripple. The first method proposed here is a four-fold segmented motor, which can reduce the torque ripple by 37.3 %. This can be achieved by segmentation in combination with a clever arrangement of active elements. However, this increases the number of necessary inverters, which increases redundancy and therefore leads to more security. A second method of achieving an equal reduction can be obtained by using a “double stator” motor. In this configuration both stators can be powered together. With this concept, the number of converters is halved compared to the first mentioned solution. This saves electronic components and thus reduces the effort. In order to enhance motor torque performance of existing two-phase 8/10 E-Core SRM, an improved modular permanent magnet (PM)-assisted Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) structure is presented. Firstly, basic structure and operation principle of the proposed structure are introduced. To further evaluate performance improvement, effects of various parameters on the design such as inductance, flux-linkage, average torque and cogging torque are compressively investigated by finite element method (FEM) software subsequently. This paper presents a new sensorless control strategy with the fault-tolerant ability for switched reluctance motors (SRMs). Nowadays, many rotor position detection methods are utilized, but most of them increase the system cost due to the additional hardware or complex calculations. To address this problem, various methods of using phase inductance to estimate the rotor position and speed have been proposed. However, the traditional inductance detection method will cause signal distortion due to the presence of interference signals and the unbalanced phase inductance. In particular, the turn-ON angle is advanced. To further improve the stability of the control system, the interference signals are eliminated via establishing the reference time of the inductance characteristic point and the error band in this work. When the position signal disappears, the inductance characteristic points of adjacent phases will be adopted for signal compensation to realize fault-tolerant control. This article presents an optimal direct torque control (DTC) strategy with variable flux for a switched reluctance motor using the improved linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) plus the hybrid optimization algorithm (HOA). First, the constant flux amplitude is substituted by the variable flux DTC (VF-DTC) to reduce the torque ripple. Then, the LADRC with the improved extended state observer applied in speed controller is utilized instead of the conventional PI control to improve the speed of the observer, antidisturbance ability, and robustness. Moreover, the HOA is employed to search for the optimal control parameters and acquire satisfactory dynamic performances. Finally, the optimal VF-DTC system is implemented on a 12/8 SRM. Simulation and experimental results are carried out to compare the performances of the conventional DTC, the VF-DTC with LADRC, the VF-DTC with PI using HOA, and the proposed optimal VF-DTC using HOA. This article proposes and implements an integrated wireless motor system using the laminated magnetic coupler (LMC) and commutative-resonant control (CRC). Prominently, a unique wireless power transfer system is developed to directly drive the switched reluctance motor (SRM) over an extendable distance with all controls centralizing in the transmitter. Differing from the multifrequency wireless motor system, the proposed system first employs the single resonant frequency to wirelessly drive a multiphase SRM through the single power transfer channel. Particularly, two orthogonal bipolar coils and one unipolar coil are skillfully integrated and naturally decoupled to form an LMC which acts as the transmitter, intermediate, and receiver coils, respectively. By utilizing the CRC to sequentially energize coils in the transmitter, the SRM phase windings can be properly excited by relevant coils in the receiver, which takes the distinct advantages of balanced phase currents, flexible transfer distance, high integration, and free maintenance. A prototype is constructed with the system efficiency of 89.14% and motor speed of 1500 rpm under the distance of 200 mm. In this article, a general-purpose low-speed position estimation scheme using pulse injection is proposed for sensorless switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. For the conventional low-speed sensorless control methods, magnetic characteristics are often used for position estimation, but it requires offline measurement and reduces the generality of sensorless control algorithms. To solve the issue, a new position estimator based on a regional phase-locked loop (RPLL) is designed. The approach utilizes a self-commissioning process to capture the unsaturated inductance adaptively at the initial stage. The RPLL is then adopted to estimate the full-cycle rotor position from the idle-phase inductance during sensorless operation. The speed-reversible sensorless control capability is also realized by a simple heterodyne design. Furthermore, stability analyses and parameter design are given to prove the robust local stability and convergence. The diode bridge rectifier fed asymmetric half-bridge converter (AHBC) is conventionally employed to drive switched reluctance motors (SRMs), which leads to poor grid-side power quality. In the proposed system, a topology made up of a voltage-sourced converter and an AHBC is employed to drive the high-speed SRM. Stable SRM operation can be obtained by manipulating the active power flowing to motor side, and on the basis of that, the grid-side power quality is enhanced by directly manipulating input reactive power. Predictive deadbeat control with disturbance observer is employed to follow the power references, thereby achieving controllable speed, energy feedback, near-unity grid-side power factor, and low grid-side current distortion simultaneously. Additionally, an improved asymmetric modulation method is developed for switching frequency reduction. Experiments are carried out to test the proposed drive system in steady and dynamic conditions. The interturn short-circuit fault of stator winding is a common failure mode in switched reluctance motors (SRMs), which can severely harm the operation of the motor. In this article, a novel method for diagnosing the interturn short-circuit fault in the current chopping mode is proposed, which is suitable for online monitoring and protection of SRMs. The proposed method achieves a fast response and high sensitivity and can mitigate the interference of load conditions on detection reliability. Moreover, this method is based on phase currents, which does not require additional sensor or detection circuits. Meanwhile, the effects of interturn fault location in the stator winding on the motor flux and motor parameters are analyzed in detail through finite-element analysis, which is helpful to establish a reliable diagnostics technique for various fault conditions. Analytical modeling (AM) of the magnetic field for axial-flux switched reluctance motors (AFSRMs), considering 3-D features and nonlinear saturation effects, remains to be a knotty problem. This article proposes a quasi-3-D nonlinear AM method to predict magnetic field distributions and electromagnetic performances of an AFSRM. First, the harmonic modeling (HM) technique is applied to obtain the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the axial and tangential magnetic flux density at the mean radius. Second, the nonlinearity of the soft magnetic material in teeth is considered by an adaptive convergence rate algorithm. Finally, a radial dependence function is formulated to extend the solution of the annular Section to any point in the 3-D space of the AFSRM. To confirm the accuracy of the proposed method, the analytical solutions of magnetic flux density and electromagnetic torque have been compared with FEM simulation results. Meanwhile, an additional validation has been done for the stability of this nonlinear AM method under severe saturation conditions. Finally, the reasonable selection of the harmonic truncation order number has been discussed to reach a good balance between accuracy and time cost. This article from a discrete-time model and stability analysis is developed using a Lyapunov approach, taking into account the one sample implementation delay present in digital control applications. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, where a conventional hysteresis controller is used as a benchmark. Results show that the proposal is able to deliver adequate reference tracking while using significantly lower sampling frequencies. This article presents a method to reduce the torque ripple in an 8/6 four-phase switched reluctance motor (SRM). The proposed scheme introduces a nonlinear modulating factor dependent on the rotor position and magnitude of the phase currents. This factor manipulates the currents in two adjacent phases during commutation and reduces the torque ripple effectively. Unlike the conventionally available torque-sharing functions, the proposed method instantaneously modulates every phase current obtained mathematically based on the other phase current in order to maintain the net torque constant. The proposed method requires minimal offline analysis and offers maximum possible torque with a minimal ripple. The method is simple and easy to implement due to a low computational burden. The proposed algorithm is implemented using MATLAB/Simulink software and is also validated experimentally on a 0.6-hp 8/6 SRM using a field-programmable-gate-arrays-based hardware setup developed in the laboratory. This article investigates the design methods and performance optimization of segmented-double-stator switched reluctance machine (SDS-SRM). First, two segmented U-shaped single-stator SRMs are introduced, including inner-rotor and outer-rotor constructions. In order to enhance the torque and power density, these two kinds of single-stator SRMs are combined together to constitute an SDS-SRM. Then, the relationships of torque ripple coefficient with the mechanical offset angles of the inner and outer rotor teeth are investigated to obtain the optimal rotor structure, and the corresponding conduction phase sequences for double-stator excitation mode are also analyzed. Furthermore, the flux distributions of the inner and outer stators with different coil magnetic polarities configurations are researched, and it reveals that the phase windings both on inner and outer stators with NSSNNSSN polarities have better magnetic field decoupling characteristics. To evaluate the final topology of the proposed SDS-SRM, the static magnetic characteristics and dynamic performances are presented. Switched reluctance machine (SRM) has progressed as a suitable contender in the family of electrical machines for its high starting torque and better performance in different operating conditions. The need for accurate modeling of this machine is, therefore, dependent on the accurate determination of losses of which iron loss is exigent. This article aims to determine iron loss from the equivalent circuit parameters of the machine based on the input data tables that are directly obtained from the experiments carried out on an existing four-phase, bifilar wound SRM. The procedure and necessary steps for the loss separation method are well defined and supported by the theoretical and practical results. This article presents a new hybrid dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) using the Coriolis effect to reduce a rotational vibration observed in various kinds of rotating machinery. The Coriolis force is generated by a linear oscillatory actuator (LOA), which reciprocates in the radial direction. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid DVA is confirmed through a MATLAB/Simulink simulation under passive and hybrid operations of the LOA. Moreover, an active torque ripple control is also presented for the purpose of applying this DVA to a switched reluctance motor (SRM). In this paper, an analytical method (AM) based on the air-gap magnetomotive force (MMF) permeance model is proposed to predict the nonlinear instantaneous torque of switched reluctance machines (SRMs). The analytical expression of the air-gap MMF is first obtained from the winding function and current profile, while the air-gap magnetic permeance considering the double-sided slotting effects is also derived. Then, the nonsaturated field distribution along the air-gap circumference is presented based on which the instantaneous torque can be calculated from the Lorentz force law. Furthermore, the model is enhanced with a saturation distribution factor to include the nonlinear characteristics. The proposed method is free from preliminary data or empirical coefficient and benefits from the simplified model and solution. Switched reluctance motors are frequently quoted for electric and hybrid electric vehicle traction. However, high torque ripple is a common restraining disadvantage. This article proposes a design method for model following sliding mode as cruise controller, considering a direct instantaneous torque controller as part of the controlled plant. In addition, a back-electromotive force cancelation is incorporated by modifying the torque reference using the developed model. A minimum torque ripple point tracking (MTRPT) that actuates over the turn-off angle is proposed through an adaptation from the steepest descent maximum power point tracking algorithm. The turn-on angle is also controlled, aiming for enhanced torque regulation. The cruise controller is Lyapunov stable, robust to parameter variations, and is capable of rejecting load disturbances. Experimental results show that the MTRPT convergence time is around $\text{2.5 s}$ for a load step and around $\text{1.625 s}$ for a speed step. Besides, the speed tracking capability of the proposed system returns an MAE of 0.9223% and 1.0884% for the ECE-R15 and for the EUDC driving schedules, respectively. The MTRPT is capable of reducing the torque ripple by 14.6% in low speeds (ECE-R15) and by 10.1% at high speeds (EUDC). In this letter, a transformed unsaturated inductance characteristic-based method is proposed for the rotor position of the switched reluctance machine. Due to the magnetic saturation effect, the phase inductance characteristics have a narrow linear region, which increases the difficulty of their analytical expression. To reduce the complexity of the analytical expression, the unsaturated inductance characteristic is transformed from the phase inductance characteristics. Then, a linear model is presented to explicitly describe the relationship between the rotor position and unsaturated phase inductance. Experimental verification is carried out to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method. For a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM), torque ripple is a critical issue, especially under low speeds. Torque ripple minimization (TRM) control aims to find the optimal currents to be injected to cancel the existing torque ripple. In this article, we propose an optimal current modeling technique for the TRM control. In the proposed technique, torque harmonics are modeled by using a set of polynomials in which their degree parameters are determined by the theoretical torque model and their coefficients are determined by the experimental torque model. The optimal current model is derived from the identified polynomials to minimize the torque harmonics and machine loss in which there is no need of machine parameters. The proposed approach is both computation and memory efficient as the optimal currents are calculated from equations, which eliminates the need for the time-consuming optimization procedure and memory-consuming lookup table. The proposed approach is fast and efficient for the TRM control, which is critical to practical applications with fast-changing loads. For traditional 12/8 bearingless switched reluctance motors (BSRMs), the coupling between torque and levitation increases the complexity of control. For the turbomachinery application, 2 degrees of freedom (DOF) BSRMs stabilized by extra 3-DOF active magnetic bearings are required. In this article, an improved BSRM with 4 rotor poles and 12 stator poles is proposed to realize 4-DOF radial levitation, and the torque dead zone is compensated because that two rotors and these poles are assemble with 15 mechanical degree shifted. The decoupling of torque and radial levitation is realized simultaneously. Moreover, the operation principle of axial reluctance force is analyzed for passive levitation in the axial direction.
