Given a graph $G$ and a set $Q$ of query nodes, we examine the Steiner Maximum-Connected Subgraph (SMCS) problem. The SMCS, or $G$ 's induced subgraph that contains $Q$ with the largest connectivity, can be useful for customer prediction, product promotion, and team assembling. Despite its importance, the SMCS problem has only been recently studied. Existing solutions evaluate the maximum SMCS, whose number of nodes is the largest among all the SMCSs of $Q$ . However, the maximum SMCS, which may contain a lot of nodes, can be difficult to interpret. In this paper, we investigate the minimal SMCS , which is the minimal subgraph of $G$ with the maximum connectivity containing $Q$ . The minimal SMCS contains much fewer nodes than its maximum counterpart, and is thus easier to be understood. However, the minimal SMCS can be costly to evaluate. We thus propose efficient Expand-Refine algorithms, as well as their approximate versions with accuracy guarantees. We further develop a cache-based processing model to improve the efficiency for an important case when $Q$ consists of a single node. A new combinatorial technique for constructing girth-6 structured binary regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes based on special types of t-designs is given. A very large number of well-known t-designs can be used by this method for code construction. Based on this method, a t-(v,k,λ) design D=(X,B) can be exploited for code construction if it satisfies the following three conditions: 1) |B_1 ∩ B_2|≤ t for any two blocks B_1,B_2∈ B and B_1 ≠ B_2; 2) λ>1; and 3) k>t. Though the technique works for any t-design satisfying these conditions, we focus only on the utilization of simple triple systems, super-simple BIBDs, Steiner systems, and large sets (LSs) of t-designs. We also construct binary and non-binary girth-6 QC-LDPC codes from the t-designs satisfying these conditions by using matrix dispersion method. Experimental results show that the constructed non-binary QC-LDPC codes can provide good practical performance under iterative decoding using the fast Fourier transform based q-ary sum-product algorithm (FFT-QSPA) and they can achieve acceptable coding gains over random-like codes of comparable parameters decoded with sum-product algorithm (SPA). Power consumption and the thermal wall have become the major factors limiting the speed of very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuits, while interconnect is becoming a primary power consumer. These factors bring new demands on the communication architecture of system-on-chips (SoCs). High bandwidth is desired to enhance parallelism for better performance, and the power efficiency on this bandwidth is critical to the overall SoC power consumption. Current bus architectures such as AMBA, Coreconnect, and Avalon are convenient for designers but not efficient on power. This paper proposes a physical synthesis scheme for on-chip buses and bus matrices to minimize the power consumption, without changing the interface or arbitration protocols. By using a bus gating technique, data transactions can take shortest paths on chip, reducing the power consumption of bus wires to minimal. Routing resource and bandwidth capacity are also optimized by the construction of a shortest-path Steiner graph, wire sharing among multiple data transactions, and wire reduction heuristics on the Steiner graph. Experiments indicate that the gated bus from our synthesis flow can save more than 90% dynamic power on average data transactions in current AMBA bus systems, which is about 5–10% of total SoC power consumption, based on comparable amount of chip area and routing resources. An optimal constant-composition or constant-weight code of weight w has linear size if and only if its distance d is at least 2w - 1. When d ≥ 2w, the determination of the exact size of such a constant-composition or constant-weight code is trivial, but the case of d = 2w - 1 has been solved previously only for binary and ternary constant-composition and constant-weight codes, and for some sporadic instances. This paper provides a construction for quasicyclic optimal constant-composition and constant-weight codes of weight w and distance 2w - 1 based on a new generalization of difference triangle sets. As a result, the sizes of optimal constant-composition codes and optimal constant-weight codes of weight w and distance 2w - 1 are determined for all such codes of sufficiently large lengths. In this paper, we present a performance and thermal-aware Steiner routing algorithm for three-dimensional (3-D) stacked integrated circuits. Our algorithm consists of two steps: tree construction and tree refinement. Our tree construction algorithm builds a delay-oriented Steiner tree under a given thermal profile. We show that our 3-D tree construction involves minimization of two-variable Elmore delay function. In our tree refinement algorithm, we reposition the through-silicon-vias (TSVs) used in existing Steiner trees while preserving the original routing topology for further thermal optimization under a performance constraint. We employ a novel scheme to relax the initial nonlinear programming formulation to integer linear programming and consider all TSVs from all nets simultaneously. Our tree construction algorithm outperforms the popular 3-D maze routing by 52% in terms of performance at the cost of 15% wirelength and 6% TSV count increase for four-die stacking. In addition, our TSV relocation results in 9 % maximum-temperature reduction at no additional area cost. We also provide extensive experimental results, including the following: 1) the wirelength and delay, distribution of various types of 3-D interconnects; 2) the impact of TSV RC parasitics on routing and TSV relocation; and 3) the impact of various bonding styles on routing and TSV relocation. Given a set of pins and a set of obstacles on routing layers, a multilayer obstacle-avoiding rectilinear Steiner minimal tree (ML-OARSMT) connects these pins by rectilinear edges within layers and vias between layers and avoids running through any obstacle to construct a Steiner tree with a minimal total cost. The ML-OARSMT problem is very important for many very large scale integration designs with pins being located in multiple routing layers that contain numerous routing obstacles incurred from IP blocks, power networks, prerouted nets, etc. As a fundamental problem with extensive practical applications to routing and wirelength/congestion/timing estimations in early design stages, it is desired to develop an effective algorithm for the ML-OARSMT problem to facilitate the design flow. However, there is no existing work on this ML-OARSMT problem. In this paper, we first formulate the ML-OARSMT problem with rectangular obstacles and then identify key different properties of this problem from its single-layer counterpart. Based on the multilayer obstacle-avoiding spanning graph, we present the first algorithm to solve the ML-OARSMT problem. Our algorithm can guarantee an optimal solution for any two-pin net and many multiple-pin nets. Experiments show that our algorithm results in 33% smaller total costs on average than a construction-by-correction heuristic which is widely used for Steiner-tree construction in the recent literature. We study the problem of constructing a data gathering tree over a wireless sensor network in order to minimize the total energy for compressing and transporting information from a set of source nodes to the sink. This problem is crucial for advanced computation-intensive applications, where traditional "maximum" in-network compression may result in significant computation energy. We investigate a tunable data compression technique that enables effective tradeoffs between the computation and communication costs. We derive the optimal compression strategy for a given data gathering tree and then investigate the performance of different tree structures for networks deployed on a grid topology as well as general graphs. Our analytical results pertaining to the grid topology and simulation results pertaining to the general graphs indicate that the performance of a simple greedy approximation to the Minimal Steiner Tree (MST) provides a constant factor approximation for the grid topology and good average performance on the general graphs. Although theoretically, a more complicated randomized algorithm offers a poly-logarithmic performance bound, the simple greedy approximation of MST is attractive for practical implementation. In this correspondence, we study the probability of undetected error for binary constant-weight codes. First, we derive a new formula on the probability of undetected error for binary constant-weight codes. Second, using this new formula and linear programming, we give two new lower bounds on the probability of undetected error for binary constant- weight codes. These two new lower bounds improve on previously known lower bounds in certain cases. Furthermore, we show that these two lower bounds are fight if and only if the binary constant-weight codes are generated from certain t-designs in combinatorial design theory. This means that these binary constant-weight codes generated from certain 2-designs are uniformly optimal for error detection. Along the way, we determine the distance distributions of such binary constant-weight codes. Finally, several examples are given to illustrate the results obtained in this correspondence. Existing studies on keyword search over relational databases usually find Steiner trees composed of connected database tuples as answers. They on-the-fly identify Steiner trees by discovering rich structural relationships between database tuples, and neglect the fact that such structural relationships can be precomputed and indexed. Recently, tuple units are proposed to improve search efficiency by indexing structural relationships, and existing methods identify a single tuple unit to answer keyword queries. However, in many cases, multiple tuple units should be integrated to answer a keyword query. Thus, these methods will involve false negatives. To address this problem, in this paper, we study how to integrate multiple related tuple units to effectively answer keyword queries. To achieve a high performance, we devise two novel indexes, single-keyword-based structure-aware index and keyword-pair-based structure-aware index, and incorporate structural relationships between different tuple units into the indexes. We use the indexes to efficiently identify the answers of integrated tuple units. We develop new ranking techniques and algorithms to progressively find the top-k answers. We have implemented our method in real database systems, and the experimental results show that our approach achieves high search efficiency and result quality, and outperforms state-of-the-art methods significantly.
