This letter presents a parameter identification of the series inductance in dual active converter. In the optimized modulation strategies and feedforward control, the series inductance is a key parameter to determine the performance of the converter. The series inductance is varied with many factors, such as the temperature, air gap, and switching frequency. The deviation value of the series inductance will cause the failure of the control strategy. In this letter, a parameter identification method is presented based on the recursive least squares algorithm. By using this method, the real value of the series inductance is derived. Finally, the effectiveness of the identification method is verified by the feedforward control in dual active bridge converters. In this communication, we report the scanning manipulation on radiation beams with an active metamaterial (MTM) antenna using p-i-n diode switches. Thanks to the MTM antenna possessing periodical configuration with isolated units, p-i-n diodes in each unit are capable of being actuated individually with OFF/ON-states (coding sequences 0/1), equivalently tuning the phase constant $\beta $ of each cell either in state $\beta _{0}$ or state $\beta _{1}$. Therefore, for MTM array with a certain number of units, we can obtain plenty of tunable states presented via digitally coding sequence combinations, thereby manipulating beam scanning in a fixed frequency band. Especially, for the first time, we propose the digitally modulated array factor (DMAF) method for the MTM array: introducing unit-cell dispersion curves of both 0/1 states to the array factor, thus, map the digitally coding sequences linearly to the scanning beams at a fixed frequency, resulting in scanning functionalities. Experiments are implemented with applying micro-control-unit (MCU) to the active MTM antenna for driving p-i-n diodes, and measurements demonstrate beam scanning continuously from −30° to +30° at fixed frequencies around 5 GHz, validating the proposed method. The goal of transfer learning is to improve the performance of target learning task by leveraging information (or transferring knowledge) from other related tasks. In this paper, we examine the problem of transfer distance metric learning (DML), which usually aims to mitigate the label information deficiency issue in the target DML. Most of the current Transfer DML (TDML) methods are not applicable to the scenario where data are drawn from heterogeneous domains. Some existing heterogeneous transfer learning (HTL) approaches can learn target distance metric by usually transforming the samples of source and target domain into a common subspace. However, these approaches lack flexibility in real-world applications, and the learned transformations are often restricted to be linear. This motivates us to develop a general flexible heterogeneous TDML (HTDML) framework. In particular, any (linear/nonlinear) DML algorithms can be employed to learn the source metric beforehand. Then the pre-learned source metric is represented as a set of knowledge fragments to help target metric learning. We show how generalization error in the target domain could be reduced using the proposed transfer strategy, and develop novel algorithm to learn either linear or nonlinear target metric. This paper is intended to propose the numerical methodology in optimizing the cusp gun for a 70-kV, 1-A W-band gyrotron traveling wave amplifier working at the second-harmonic TE21 mode. Two numerical methods using the simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) and genetic algorithm (GA) are adopted to perform the gun optimization. Classical electron optics software EGUN is employed to compute the beam trajectories. Maintaining the velocity ratio around 1.6, the axial velocity spreads optimized by SAA and GA are 1.44% and 0.33%, respectively, which means a great improvement compared with the manually optimized value of 2.78%. An analysis of the impact of parametric fluctuation on beam quality indicates that this cusp gun can be stably operated within a reasonable parameter scope. In this paper, a novel triode-type magnetron injection gun (MIG) with three emitters designed for gyrotron traveling wave amplifiers has been presented. This MIG can be operated in Ku/Ka/Q single band or Ku-Ka/Ka-Q dual band. The optimization of the MIG is accomplished by a multiobjective genetic algorithm method. It is anticipated that this MIG possesses an axial velocity spread of <5% in all the operating frequency bands. The results of sensitivity study show that this MIG can work stably within reasonable parametric windows. Velocity spreads considering cathode surface roughness and initial thermal temperature are analyzed. In order to enhance the efficiency of confocal gyrotron traveling-wave tubes (gyro-TWTs), this paper is intended to present a novel triode-type magnetron injection gun for a 140-GHz 2-kW confocal gyro-TWT. This novel gun, which has a pair of sectorial emitters, is expected to obtain an axial velocity spread of 7.83% and a velocity ratio of 1.01 with an anode voltage of 35 kV and a beam current of 2.4 A. The design procedure has been given in detail. Computer simulations have been carried out using 3-D electromagnetic code computer simulation technology particle tracing. The sensitivity analysis has been performed to study the parametric dependence of modulating anode voltage, accelerating anode voltage, and cathode magnetic field on beam qualities. Canonical correlation analysis (CCA) has proven an effective tool for two-view dimension reduction due to its profound theoretical foundation and success in practical applications. In respect of multi-view learning, however, it is limited by its capability of only handling data represented by two-view features, while in many real-world applications, the number of views is frequently many more. Although the ad hoc way of simultaneously exploring all possible pairs of features can numerically deal with multi-view data, it ignores the high order statistics (correlation information) which can only be discovered by simultaneously exploring all features. Therefore, in this work, we develop tensor CCA (TCCA) which straightforwardly yet naturally generalizes CCA to handle the data of an arbitrary number of views by analyzing the covariance tensor of the different views. TCCA aims to directly maximize the canonical correlation of multiple (more than two) views. Crucially, we prove that the main problem of multi-view canonical correlation maximization is equivalent to finding the best rank-$1$ approximation of the data covariance tensor, which can be solved efficiently using the well-known alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm. As a consequence, the high order correlation information contained in the different views is explored and thus a more reliable common subspace shared by all features can be obtained. The magnetron injection gun (MIG) is an important component in the gyro-traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT). The electron velocity spread induced to the mismatch of the electric and magnetic fields influences the performance of gyro-TWT. To improve electron beam quality, we designed a modulating anode with curved geometry. And the multi-objective genetic algorithm was employed to optimize the curved geometry. An electron beam with a velocity ratio of 1.05 and low transverse velocity spread of 0.31% in a MIG for a Q-band gyro-TWT is obtained. Compared with the previous design with a transverse velocity spread of 1.17%, the electron beam performance got improved. And the thermal analysis and parametric sensitivity were done. The effects of a small misalignment of the inner rod in a corrugated coaxial-gyrotron on eigenvalue, resonant frequency, and electronic efficiency, and so forth, are presented. As a practical application, with the electronic velocity spread and cavity wall resistivity being taken into account, the beam–wave interaction of a 170 GHz megawatt corrugated coaxial-gyrotron operating with TE 31,12 mode has been investigated. The results show that the eigenvalue increases slightly when the ratio of misalignment to outer radius D/R increases in the case of small ratio of outer to inner radius C= R/R_{\rm {in}} , but is uniform in the case of large ratio of C$ . The electronic efficiency decrease slightly when $D/R$ increases within the range of 0–0.01. If $D/R$ increases to 0.02, the efficiency decreases seriously to only about 5%. Distance metric learning (DML) is a critical factor for image analysis and pattern recognition. To learn a robust distance metric for a target task, we need abundant side information (i.e., the similarity/dissimilarity pairwise constraints over the labeled data), which is usually unavailable in practice due to the high labeling cost. This paper considers the transfer learning setting by exploiting the large quantity of side information from certain related, but different source tasks to help with target metric learning (with only a little side information). The state-of-the-art metric learning algorithms usually fail in this setting because the data distributions of the source task and target task are often quite different. We address this problem by assuming that the target distance metric lies in the space spanned by the eigenvectors of the source metrics (or other randomly generated bases). The target metric is represented as a combination of the base metrics, which are computed using the decomposed components of the source metrics (or simply a set of random bases); we call the proposed method, decomposition-based transfer DML (DTDML). In particular, DTDML learns a sparse combination of the base metrics to construct the target metric by forcing the target metric to be close to an integration of the source metrics. The main advantage of the proposed method compared with existing transfer metric learning approaches is that we directly learn the base metric coefficients instead of the target metric. To this end, far fewer variables need to be learned. We therefore obtain more reliable solutions given the limited side information and the optimization tends to be faster. The magnetron injection gun (MIG) is an important component in a gyro-travelling wave tube. To improve the efficiency of the MIG design process, a design tool based on ANSYS Workbench combining with other commercially available software, has been developed. The design process for a Q-band triode MIG is described. A pitch factor of 1.004 and low axial velocity spread of 1.54% were achieved. Design techniques and experimental results are presented on a Ku-band TE11 mode gyro-traveling wave tube. The hot test of this amplifier gives more than 153-kW output power, 2.3-GHz bandwidth (14%), 41-dB saturated gain, and 20% efficiency driven by a 63 kV, 12-A electron beam with a pitch angle (vtvz) of 1.2, and velocity spread of 5%. A linear polarized TE11 mode input coupler is used to introduce the input power. The stability of the amplifier from oscillation, including both the operating TE11 mode and the backward wave TE21 mode, has been investigated with linear codes, nonlinear self-consistent theory, and 3-D PIC CHIPIC simulation. To suppress the potential gyro-backward wave oscillator interactions, the high frequency circuit is loaded with lossy ceramic rings. Procedures to design a curved collector for a Q-band gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) are presented in this paper. The collector of the gyro-TWT is identified as a crucial part due to its high loading with the dissipated power of the spent electron beam. The power capacity of the conventional cylindrical collector is seriously limited due to its smaller dissipation area. To overcome this drawback, we proposed the curved collector, which can enhance the power handling capability so that it will be more suitable for highpower gyro-devices. An optimized curved collector for our Q-band gyro-TWT was designed using numerical calculations and Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Particle Studio. It is a significant challenge to classify images with multiple labels by using only a small number of labeled samples. One option is to learn a binary classifier for each label and use manifold regularization to improve the classification performance by exploring the underlying geometric structure of the data distribution. However, such an approach does not perform well in practice when images from multiple concepts are represented by high-dimensional visual features. Thus, manifold regularization is insufficient to control the model complexity. In this paper, we propose a manifold regularized multitask learning (MRMTL) algorithm. MRMTL learns a discriminative subspace shared by multiple classification tasks by exploiting the common structure of these tasks. It effectively controls the model complexity because different tasks limit one another's search volume, and the manifold regularization ensures that the functions in the shared hypothesis space are smooth along the data manifold. We conduct extensive experiments, on the PASCAL VOC'07 dataset with 20 classes and the MIR dataset with 38 classes, by comparing MRMTL with popular image classification algorithms. Distributed lossy dielectric is of considerable interest for high-power milli- and submillimeter radiation sources, particularly for gyrotron traveling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs). The analytical design and experiment of a Q-band gyro-TWT loaded with periodic lossy dielectric rings operating in the circular \TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic are presented. The gyro-TWT is driven by a 70-kV 10-A helical electron beam with a velocity ratio of 1.0. Hot test performs maximum peak output power of 152 kW, 41-dB saturated gain, and 21.7% efficiency at 47.6 GHz. The measured bandwidth over 100 kW is at the range of 47–49 GHz. PIC simulation and large-signal prediction show excellent agreements to the hot test results. The potential backward wave oscillation interactions involving the spurious modes \TE11, \TE21, and \TE02 are effectively suppressed by loading lossy dielectric rings periodically. The Q-band gyro-TWT is zero-drive stable at the operating points, which demonstrates that loading lossy dielectric is excellent to stabilize the spurious oscillations. The design of a high-power low-velocity-spread space-charge-limited cusp gun is presented. The Lagrangian formulation is used to analyze the velocity spread and beam ripple (orbit center spread). It shows that the two electron orbit off-center mechanisms, the radial velocity and the nonideal cusp magnetic field, can be adjusted to cancel each other. The characteristics of the cusp gun including the cusp magnet are calculated by cosimulation employing the Maxwell2D, Matlab, Egun, and CST-PS codes. The cusp gun is designed to generate a beam of 8 A at 70 kV with a pitch factor from 1.0 to 1.8 and an axial velocity spread from 3% to 7%. Optical access networks (OANs) with passive optical network technology have been globally deployed on a massive scale, serving as the fundamental information infrastructure of teleCommunication networks. Some telecom service providers are re-architecting their networks based on cloud central office with software-defined networking and network functions virtualization capabilities to provide service agility, intelligence, and scalability. In this article, we present a synthesized analysis of the inherent value and practical use cases of access network (AN) slicing in the context of software-defined OANs. A novel hierarchical abstraction model and a workflow of end-to-end network slicing are presented to illustrate the support of multi-service and multi-tenancy applications over a converged OAN platform by enabling automatic life cycle management of AN slicing. This article presents a modulation scheme to suppress the transient dc bias current in dual active bridge (DAB) converters. The current in the transformer at the commutating time is associated with the initial current in a switching period, so there must be a dc bias current during the transient response. To investigate the modulation scheme for suppressing the transient dc bias current, the article reviews the optimal TPS control strategy, which is derived from the zero voltage switching with the minimum current stress in the transformer. By analyzing the dc bias current, the transient dc bias current can be evaluated by the current in the transformer at the symmetry line of the primary full-bridge voltage waveform instead of the current at the commutating time. It can be concluded that the expressions of the transient dc bias current for different working modes are unified. Therefore, the modulation schemes without transient dc bias current for different working modes can be also unified. On this basis, a universal strategy can meet all the transient cases. There is no need to identify or select the working modes and power conditions in the transient dc bias current control, which simplifies the implementation of the modulation scheme in the digital signal processor. An important cue for multi-pedestrian tracking in video is the consistent appearance of an individual for quite a while. In this paper, we address multi-pedestrian tracking by learning a robust appearance model from the paradigm of tracking by detection. To separate detections of different pedestrians while assembling detections of the same pedestrian, we take advantage of the cue of consistent appearance and exploit three types of evidence from the recent, past and near-future. Existing online approaches only exploit the detection-to-detection and sequence-to-detection metrics, which focus on the recent and past appearance patterns respectively, while the future pedestrian appearance is simply ignored. This drawback is remedied in this paper by further considering the sequence-to-sequence metric, which resorts to near-future appearance presentation. Adaptive combination weights are learned to fuse these three different metrics. Moreover, we propose a novel Focal Triplet Loss to make the model focus more on hard examples than the easy ones. We demonstrate that this can significantly enhance the discriminating power of the model compared with treating every sample equally. Effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method is verified by conducting comprehensive ablation studies and comparing with many competitive (offline/online/near-online) counterparts on the MOT16 and MOT17 Challenges. Surface flaw inspection is of great importance for quality control in the field of manufacture. In this paper, a novel surface flaw inspection algorithm is proposed based on adaptive multiscale image collection (AMIC) using convolutional neural networks. First, the inspection networks are pretrained with ImageNet data set. Second, the AMIC is established, which consists of adaptive multiscale image extraction and with-contour local extraction from training images. Through the AMIC, the training data set is greatly augmented, and labels of images can be accomplished automatically without artificial consumption. Then, transfer learning is performed with the AMIC established from training data set. Finally, an automatic surface flaw inspection instrument for large-volume metal components embedded with the proposed inspection algorithm is designed. Experiments with small metal components are performed to analyze the influence of parameters, and comparative experiments are carried out. The inspecting precisions for indentation, scratch, and pitted surface of the proposed method are 97.3%, 99.5%, and 100%, respectively. The improvement of the beam–wave interaction efficiency of the sheet beam extended interaction oscillator (SBEIO) is studied and presented in this article. A novel multi-parameter optimization scheme is developed, which is based on the simulated annealing global optimization algorithm, the nonlinear theory, and 3-D simulations, including the axial electric field distribution and the distances between each gap. The 3-D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations are performed to verify the scheme. A $\textit {Ka}$ -band SBEIO with nine gaps is optimized with a 36.25-kV and 3.5-A electron beam. The final optimized efficiency obtained from the developed code is 31%, which shows a good agreement with the 32.6% results of the PIC simulation. High-power signals traveling along the surface of the shielding of transmitter systems may leak into the system through openings between connecting parts and cause damage to vulnerable electronic devices. This problem could be alleviated by implementing lossy coatings or recently developed passive power-dependent nonlinear surfaces. However, these solutions will either suppress the performance of the electromagnetic devices being shielded or be highly power-dependent. Applying transistors creates an active nonlinear metasurface that can allow the absorption of the surface to be directly controlled by the system, or tuned in response to the local power level using feedback control. This can provide a sharp absorption response with a wide range of controllable power threshold. Different absorption rates at the same power level can also be achieved by applying different biasing to the transistors. Axis coincidence consideration is necessary in the design of gyrotron solenoids; besides, radial field component strongly affects the performance of gyrodevices owing to the transverse particle–wave interaction mechanism in it, especially for high-frequency operation. In this article, the theory of multiple eccentric coils is derived. It is capable of calculating the off-axis field inside the solenoid with specified displacement and tilt. Numerical calculations are validated by 3-D electromagnetic simulation methods. Based on the measured magnet field, the displacement and tilt of a three-coil magnet system are successfully predicted with a global optimization algorithm, and then, the magnet system is well calibrated using a pair of flanges. In this article, a compact mode selection filter and a mode converter for the 0.22-THz sheet beam traveling-wave tube (SB-TWT) has been proposed, fabricated, and tested to realize selective absorption of high-order mode without interference on the working mode. The reasonable structure and placement is explored from theory to manufacturing method in order to minimize reflection and mode distortion by junction discontinuity. Two proof-of-concept prototypes have been fabricated and tested to analyze the error sources in terahertz device. And the corresponding error models are also constructed. Final transmission data exhibit an excellent agreement with the results of computer simulations when conductor loss is taken into consideration. This article proposes a scheme to design a broadband low-profile monopulse comparator for the dual-circularly polarized feeder. For obtaining a compact and easily integrated structure, a monopulse comparator with a ring-shaped symmetrical planner topology is proposed by using the 3 dB coupler and the phase shifter based on the groove gap waveguide (GGW). Then, in order to achieve the equal-amplitude distribution in a broad bandwidth, the asymmetrical coupling structure and the novel dispersion-matched transition are proposed to improve the directivity of a 3 dB coupler. Moreover, a ridge waveguide with periodic grooves featuring stable dispersion change is adopted to design the phase shifter, which contributes to obtain an accurate phase control in the broad frequency band. To validate experimentally the broadband performance, a dual-circularly polarized four-horn feeder with two identical monopulse comparators is designed and fabricated. The results show that the symmetrical radiation patterns with 32 dB null-depth can be obtained from 27 to 31 GHz. The monopulse comparator characterizes broad bandwidth, low loss, and a compact size, which provides a monopulse comparator with accurate amplitude/phase control for the research of the monopulse antenna. The sheet beam gun (SBG) is operated at high temperature, and thermal expansion could induce huge electron beam degeneration. The previous SBG design, which did not take account of thermal expansion, obtained bad transportation performance. Experimental measurement showed that the distance variation between a cathode and an anode was larger than 0.42 mm, which could hugely degenerate beam performance. A new inner support rod with grooves was employed in this paper, and the heat power was reduced from 27 to 15.5 W, while the distance variation was reduced to 0.29 mm. The new SBG with adjustment according to the thermal expansion was fabricated and tested. The transportation rate after anode tunnel was enhanced to 98%, and the total transportation rate of sheet beam traveling wave tube with a period permanent magnet focusing structure was about 90%. A methodology to generate a circular TE13 mode for the operation of high-order mode (HOM) gyrotron-traveling-wave tubes is presented in this paper. A rectangular TE10 mode is efficiently converted into a circular TE13 mode using Y-type power dividers. Symmetric curved lossy dielectrics and dielectric rings are, respectively, positioned to suppress the potential coupling TE32 and TE71 modes according to their electric and magnetic field distribution properties. An HOM converter without dielectrics loaded was designed, constructed, and cold tested. Back-to-back transmission measurements exhibit good agreement with the results of computer simulations. This paper presents the design and simulation of a $Q$ -band gyrotron backward-wave oscillator that is operated at fundamental TE01 mode. A tapered interaction circuit with distributed loss is employed to suppress both the transverse and axial mode competitions. A nonlinear code is used to study the start-oscillation current and interaction behavior. A Computer Simulation Technology (Particle In Cell) (CST-PIC) method is employed to verify the numerical calculation. A simulation result of 127-kW output power and 22.7% efficiency with a 3-dB bandwidth of 1.3 GHz driven by a beam of 70-kV voltage and 8-A current is predicted. A new curved-profile undepressed collector designed for a planned 35-GHz gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) is proposed in this paper. This gyro-TWT, which is driven by a 70-kV, 10-A electron beam, is working at the fundamental TE01 mode with an efficiency of 20% and gain of 45 dB. Studies including theoretical analysis, numerical calculation, and computational simulation have been done. Key issues concerning electronic collecting density, dissipated power distribution, transmission performance, secondary electrons, and thermal property are considered. In this article, a high-isolation power divider with ultrawideband characteristics for simultaneous operation in two adjacent bands is proposed. The power divider is developed based on a four-port coplanar Magic-T. The difference port of the Magic-T consists of a double-ridge gap waveguide (RGW) that supports quasi-TEM mode transmission, which provides the benefit of its broadband characteristics and allows for facilitated assembly. In addition, an inline microstrip line (MSL) containing a probe is inserted into the opposite side of the difference port to form the sum port. This basic configuration has actually achieved high isolation between the output arms and low return loss at each port, and however, its isolation bandwidth is limited by the narrowband matching of the sum port. To overcome this difficulty, a three-port microstrip T-junction is connected in series to the sum port of the Magic-T, resulting in a five-port 3-dB power divider with a wide isolation bandwidth. The process of considering this solution is analyzed and explained in detail in this article and the corresponding simulations and experimental verifications are performed. According to the obtained results, the proposed power divider has excellent overall performance, in particular low loss, ultrawideband, high isolation, and good amplitude/phase consistency. Solving constrained multiobjective optimization problems brings great challenges to an evolutionary algorithm, since it simultaneously requires the optimization among several conflicting objective functions and the satisfaction of various constraints. Hence, how to adjust the tradeoff between objective functions and constraints is crucial. In this article, we propose a dynamic selection preference-assisted constrained multiobjective differential evolutionary (DE) algorithm. In our approach, the selection preference of each individual is suitably switching from the objective functions to constraints as the evolutionary process. To be specific, the information of objective function, without considering any constraints, is extracted based on Pareto dominance to maintain the convergence and diversity by exploring the feasible and infeasible regions; while the information of constraint is used based on constrained dominance principle to promote the feasibility. Then, the tradeoff in these two kinds of information is adjusted dynamically, by emphasizing the utilization of objective functions at the early stage and focusing on constraints at the latter stage. Furthermore, to generate the promising offspring, two DE operators with distinct characteristics are selected as components of the search algorithm. Experiments on four test suites including 56 benchmark problems indicate that the proposed method exhibits superior or at least competitive performance, in comparison with other well-established methods. Overall design and cold test of a G-band gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier are presented. This gyro-TWT aims at achieving a goal of 10-kW pulse output power in the range of 210–220 GHz. It is operated in a circular TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonics, which is driven by a 50-kV, 3-A gyrating electron beam. Low velocity spread diode-type magnetron injection gun (MIG), multichannel TE01 mode input coupler, broadband metasurface output window, and lossy material loaded beam–wave interaction circuit are simulated and partially measured. Particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation shows that the designed gyro-TWT can achieve a saturated output power over 10 kW in the range of 210–228 GHz with a beam velocity spread of 2.29%. In this paper, a new type input/output (i/o) structure, adopting the multiaperture coupler, for broadband sheet-beam traveling-wave tube was designed and analyzed. This novel coupling structure not only can get a larger electron passway, which will greatly benefit the transmission of the electron beam, without deteriorating electromagnetic transmission characteristics, but also work over an extremely broad bandwidth. The transmission characteristics of this coupling i/o structure are investigated by Ansoft’s high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS). Operating at TE \(_{10}\) mode, the maximum insertion loss and isolation of the i/o structure over 36–52 GHz, which equals to 36.4% bandwidth, are −25 and −20 dB, the transmission coefficient is above −0.3 dB. This article proposed an overmoded waveguide method (OWM) for more accurate measurement of dielectric properties in the subterahertz and terahertz band. Compared with the traditional standard waveguide method (SWM), the OWM is beneficial to alleviate the significant error caused by the air gap. Simulation predicts that for typical medium permittivity and loss materials, the relative errors of $\varepsilon _{r}$ and tan $\delta $ can be reduced from 10% to below 3% using the OWM with an overmoded factor of 3 when the air gap is 0.02 mm at W-band. When extending the overmoded factor over 5, the relative error can be reduced below 1.5%. The tolerance improvement was verified by measuring a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sample through SWM and OWM. Highly oversized mode converters are the critical devices for high power millimeter-wave transmission systems, characterizing high power capacity and low loss. In order to improve the conversion efficiency from TE01 to TE11 mode, the mode coupling mechanism of oversized elliptical waveguides is explored, and an optimal ellipticity interval to obtain the high conversion efficiency is deduced by analyzing the mode coupling capacity. Considering that ellipticity can affect the power capacity, breakdown thresholds of different operating modes in elliptical waveguides are studied. Based on the analyses, a synthesis method to design the elliptical mode converter integrating the mode conversion efficiency and the power capacity is proposed. A highly oversized mode converter working in $W$ -band is designed, and the simulation results demonstrate that the mode converter achieves the high conversion efficiency over 95% in a relative bandwidth of 19.6%. In order to validate the design, a prototype of the mode converter is fabricated, and the high purity of outputted TE11 mode is verified by the measurement. The oversized mode converter designed by the proposed synthesis method features high efficiency, broad bandwidth, and high power capacity, enabling its full utilization of the potential of gyrotron traveling-wave tubes (gyro-TWTs). A diode magnetron injection gun (MIG) has been designed and analyzed for G-band gyro-traveling wave tube (Gyro-TWT). A novel curved surface emitter is proposed to enhance the beam quality. An electron beam with velocity ratio of 1.20 and transverse velocity spread of 2.11% is obtained. The beam transportation stability with geometry misalignment is also analyzed, and the assembly accuracy should be controlled under 0.1 mm. The stray electron is intercepted by the capture structure to avoid the bombardment to the interaction circuit. Then the cathode is fabricated, and the temperature distribution is measured. The experimental result matches well with the simulation. The electron beam quality considering expansion, surface roughness, and thermal emission is estimated, and the total transverse velocity spread is about 2.63%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effects of the output window reflection instability on the performance of our designed ${W}$ -band broadband gyrotron traveling wave tube (gyro-TWT) were studied by the simulation and hot test experiments. Strong oscillations and frequency self-modulation (FSM) in the after-cavity interaction (ACI) region were observed in the zero-driven state with a two-layer window and are verified with the beam-wave particle-in-cell simulation. Oscillations and FSM of 80–81.8 GHz and 91.03–94.68 GHz are, respectively, generated from the TE22 and TE02 modes in the ACI region due to the high window reflection level. By using the “sandwich” and meta-surface windows with low reflection and broad bandwidth, the parasitic ACI oscillations can be effectively suppressed. The maximum saturated output power is improved to 156.8 kW at 94 GHz and is zero-driven stable in our recent hot test experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A circular TE0n mode content analysis technique based on the multi-mode coupler with high mode selectivity is proposed. To improve the mode selectivity, a deformed waveguide, entitled the quad-polar waveguide, which discriminates the azimuthally symmetric TE-mode on the waveguide wall, is introduced. The influence of deformation on the TE01 and TE02 modes’ field pattern, the corresponding transmission loss, and the power capacity in the quad-polar waveguide are analyzed. Based on the analysis, a dual-mode coupler of the circular TE01 and TE02 modes, consisting of an oversized deformed circular waveguide coupler and a pair of circular-to-quad-polar waveguide transitions, is designed for a high-power Ka-band gyrotron traveling-wave tube system. To verify the high mode selectivity of a quad-polar waveguide, a simple coupling with equal-radius and equal-interval holes are used. A prototype is fabricated and measured, and the results show that the coupling coefficient is −40 dB with the directivity of 27 dB for the TE01 mode, suppressing the unwanted mode TE02 mode with 53 dB. For the TE02 mode, the coupling coefficient is −40 dB with the directivity of 25 dB and suppresses the unwanted mode TE01 mode with 75 dB from 30 to 40 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mode converter is one of the most important devices in the high-power microwave (HPM) applications. To conduct an in-depth research for the orthogonal mode converter, a novel 90° compact TM01-TE11 circular waveguide converter working at 9.7 GHz is proposed in this article. This design innovatively integrates the traditional mode converter with 90° bend techniques based on the mode coupling theory, which ensures a compact structure and high-power handling capacity. Calculated and simulated results illustrate that the maximum conversion efficiency of the converter at central frequency reaches 99.4% when the structure length is 535 mm, and the bandwidth reaches 680 MHz when the conversion efficiency exceeds 95%. For demonstration, a prototype is fabricated, and the corresponding experiments are investigated. According to the $S$ -parameter measurement, it has a high conversion efficiency at central frequency. Meanwhile, the high-power performance is conducted by connecting it with a relativistic backward oscillator (RBWO), and the converter works stably under a maximum output power of 4 GW. Gyrotron traveling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) are of considerable interest for high-power millimeter and submillimeter radiation sources. The analytical design and experiment of a W-band gyro-TWT loaded with nonuniform periodic lossy dielectric rings is presented in this paper. The gyro-TWT is operating in the circular TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic, and driven by a 60 kV, 8-A gyrating electron beam with velocity ratio 1.2. Hot test results were: 1) maximum peak output power 112 kW; 2) 69.7-dB saturated gain; and 3) 23.3% efficiency at 93.5 GHz. The measured bandwidth with peak power greater than 90 kW is about 4 GHz in the range of 93–97 GHz. The hot test results show excellent agreement with the theoretical prediction. The potential backward wave oscillations involving the spurious modes TE11, TE21, and TE02 are effectively suppressed by the nonuniformly loaded periodic lossy dielectric rings. The W-band gyro-TWT is zero-drive stable at the operating points. It demonstrates that a nonuniform loaded lossy dielectric structure is excellent for suppressing potential spurious oscillations. This article proposes a method to excite the TM11 mode in circular waveguides. The principle of synthesizing a circular TM mode is deduced based on the electric dipole moment theory first, and the output mode and its purity are analyzed theoretically. Then, a mode conversion scheme to convert the rectangular TE10 into circular TM11 mode via a pair of out-of-phase quasi-TEM mode is proposed. In order to achieve the broadband excitation in a compact size, the ridge gap waveguide is used as a medium between the rectangular and cylindrical waveguide. Simulation results present that the proposed exciter has a propagation bandwidth up to 10 GHz in Ka-band with a mode purity over 98%. A prototype is manufactured and measured, and the presence of TM11 mode and the mode purity are confirmed by a port radiation pattern measurement. The mode exciter features high mode purity, broad bandwidth, and a compact size, which provides a low-power generator for the research of novel gyrobackward-wave devices and devices in the high-power transmission line. This article introduces a new type of contact-less electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure in the form of an embedded bed of nails. Compared with the traditional bed of nails structure, the smooth upper metal plate originally used to provide the perfect electrical conductor (PEC) boundary is replaced by periodic defect grooves, and the metal pins on the base block are embedded in these grooves without any electric contact. One of the advantages of the embedded EBG structure is that it has a robust tolerance for the height of the air gap. Therefore, this structure provides a cost-effective parallel plate mode suppression solution because it allows a low-precision manufacturing process level while maintaining the stability of the bandwidth. On the other hand, the proposed EBG structure can achieve a stopband range of several octaves. This characteristic makes it indeed suitable for wideband gap waveguides (GWs) to provide horizontal open boundaries. To verify the feasibility of the proposed approach, the new ridge gap waveguide (RGW) (with an embedded bed of nails) and the classic RGW (with a traditional bed of nails) with two 90° bends are designed, fabricated, measured, and compared. This article explores an extremely high beam–wave interaction (BWI) efficiency technology of sheet beam traveling wave tubes (SBTWTs). An all-period phase velocity tapering optimization method is proposed to improve BWI efficiency of slow wave structure (SWS). The effects of the special electron bunching state and synchronous phase velocity change on the improvement of BWI efficiency generated by this method are analyzed. To solve the computational burden caused by dozens of parameters, self-developed 1-D nonlinear BWI code is used to calculate the BWI. For the best optimization effect, particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm selected from a variety of algorithms is utilized to search for the global optimal solution. The PIC simulation verification results show that by the all-period optimization method, the 80-period staggered double vane (SDV) SWS achieves a stable output power of 18 kW with 31 kV voltage 0.9-A current sheet beam at 30 GHz. The BWI efficiency of all-period phase velocity tapering SWS has reached 64.5% at center frequency, the efficiency between 28 and 35 GHz exceeds 40%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A novel fan-out wafer-level packaging (FOWLP) technology with double-sided redistribution layers (RDLs) and tall copper vertical interconnects is described. The design of a dual-polarized magnetoelectric (ME) dipole antenna based on this new packaging technology is presented. It is shown that the antenna with a size of $10\times10$ mm2 achieves good impedance matching and a stable radiation pattern over a wide bandwidth from 25 to 43 GHz, which can cover most of the millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks in different countries. In order to enhance the power capacity of gyro-traveling wave tube (Gyro-TWT), a novel multisectorial-tunnel circuit is presented in this article. The multisectorial tunnel could extend the transverse dimension of RF circuit for higher power electron beam transportation. The azimuthal drifting and transportation distortion performance for rotated electron beam are analyzed. A multibeam magnetron injection gun (MIG) is designed. The electron beam with pitch factor of 1.09 and axial velocity spread of 3.5% is obtained. And the designed cathode was fabricated and temperature distribution was measured. A broadband dielectric window with high power handling capability for gyrotron traveling wave tubes (gyro-TWTs) had been designed based on the step-type impedance transition structure. The manufactured beryllium oxide (BeO) window can achieve a relative bandwidth of 35.3% with a maximum reflection of −20 dB in the ${X}$ -band, and the corresponding transmission loss is over −0.1 dB. The resonant spikes caused by engineering factors, including assembly tilt and gap, are investigated and analyzed. Thermal analysis shows that the BeO window can achieve a high average/CW power handling capability of over 232 kW within a wide frequency range. An optimum approach for designing a TE01 mode oversized waveguide bend is proposed based on angular-deformed circular waveguide. Due to the deformation of the circular waveguide cross section, the degeneracy of the TE01 mode and the TM11 mode is removed, and the mode conversion inside the waveguide bend is weakened. Characterizations of the angular-deformed circular waveguide with different deformation and its influence on the mode spectrum, the transmission loss, and the power capacity are investigated. Based on the analysis results and the coupling-wave theory, a Ka-band broadband oversized deformed circular waveguide bend with the propagating TE01 mode is designed, fabricated, and measured. A good agreement between the calculation results and the S-parameter measurement of a prototype is achieved. The transmission efficiency is over 95% in the frequency range of 26.5–35.9 GHz (the relative band is over 30%). Early warning of a potential pandemic with respiratory symptoms is crucial for global health management. It enables timely intervention to reduce the likelihood of uncontrollable massive virus spread. In this research, we propose to leverage the ubiquitous wearable devices to develop a wearable crowdsource system to monitor respiratory symptoms such as cough and fever. Wearable devices nowadays can directly and non-intrusively measure people's vital signs in real time with a variety of sensors embedded. We collect the data from wearable devices and develop machine learning algorithms to analyze the data for respiratory symptom monitoring and early warning. In particular, we focus on cough detection through multi-source data fusion (e.g., accelerometer amplitude and microphone audio). Preliminary results show that our algorithms result in higher detection accuracy and less false positives with the lowest use of computing resources.
