25. Development of a Polyaniline/Fluoral-P Chemical Sensor for Gaseous Formaldehyde Detection.

Abstract

Formaldehyde detection in air is of particular interest since this compound is classified as carcinogenic by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). It is abundant indoors (with an indoor/outdoor ratio around 5 to 15) and has as main origin the emissions from building or furniture materials. Among all the strategies currently used to control formaldehyde concentrations, none of them combines both good selectivity, low detection limit and easiness of use at low cost. To achieve this goal, we focused on the specific reaction between fluoral-p and formaldehyde to develop a sensor made of an intrinsically conducting polymer and fluoral-p. Formaldehyde reacts with fluoral-p to produce 3, 5-diacetyl-1, 4-dihydro-2, 6-lutidine (DDL) and ammonia. Polyaniline (PAni) was chosen as the conducting polymer due to its ammonia sensitivity as previously described by the authors. The performances of this new formaldehyde sensor have been evaluated in terms of sensibility, response time and detection limit. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The CMS Preshower is a fine grain detector that comprises 4288 silicon sensors, each containing 32 strips. The raw data are transferred from the detector to the counting room via 1208 optical fibres. Each fibre carries a 600-byte data packet per event. The maximum average level-i trigger rate of 100 kHz results in a total data flow of ~72 GB/s from the Preshower. For the readout of the Preshower, 56 links to the CMS DAQ have been reserved, each having a bandwidth of 200 MB/s (2 kB/event). The total available downstream bandwidth of ~11 GB/s necessitates a reduction in the data volume by a factor of at least 7. A modular VME-based system is currently under development. The main objective of each VME board in this system is to acquire on-detector data from at least 22 optical links, perform on-line data reduction and pass the concentrated data to the CMS DAQ. Abstract

A novel monolithically integrated device used as an optical phase-shift detector is presented. It consists of a diffraction grating etched at the surface of a p-n photodiode fabricated by a process compatible with a standard silicon CMOS technology. When two coherent light beams are collimated toward the surface of the device, the detected optical power generates a current depending on the relative phase between the two incident beams. The operating principle of this detector and the results obtained by finite-difference time-domain modeling are presented. The fabrication process of the first devices is described and the experimental validation of the concept is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
