IMPACT: Emergency service workers perceived similarly low levels of organizational support compared with professionals and administrative employees. However, both emergency workers and healthcare professionals undertake high levels of emotional labour and therefore are susceptible to high levels of stress and, consequently, require organizational support. Low organizational support contributes to low wellbeing and engagement. If austerity-driven management is the cause of low organizational support, then new management models are required to ensure psychologically safe workplaces. Otherwise, the burden caused by poor management is placed on the community because taxpayers pay for emergency service workers’ stress-related workers’ compensation claims.

This study examined the effectiveness of a 10-week cognitive rehabilitation and lifestyle modifying intervention that integrated compensation strategies, engagement in brain activities, and improving everyday function. The trial was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03549078). Older adults with subjective cognitive concerns and normal performance on a cognitive screener were randomized into the intervention (n = 28) or waitlist control (n = 29) groups. The total sample comprised 57 individuals (age, mean = 74.8, SD = 6.5), mostly female (80.4% of the total sample), and well educated (education years: mean = 15.9, SD = 2.1). Outcome measures were completed at baseline, and immediately and 3- and 6-months post-intervention. Intervention participants reported significant improvements in aspects of everyday functioning and select compensation strategies and brain health activities. Increased compensation strategy use was maintained at 6-month follow up. This intervention has benefits for improving everyday functioning and increasing engagement with compensation strategies and brain health activities.

The commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) involves children in any sexual exchange with an adult for compensation—monetary or non-monetary. This article explores the experiences of sexually exploited children in the Dominican Republic. This research seeks to understand the impact global economies have on local realities and how these complex systems impact the everyday realities of young, impoverished children in the Dominican Republic. This article's findings are based on 19 interviews with children who were sexually exploited for compensation and seven interviews with parents of children who had been sexually exploited. The findings indicate that children firmly believed that they decided to engage in sexually exploitative encounters; however, all participants expressed to some degree that they did not have a choice. Further, nearly all the participants advised other children from getting involved in sexual exchanges for compensation, given the emotional toll it would have.

The British Empire formally emancipated its slaves in the Caribbean on 1 August 1834, then in South Africa on 1 December 1834 and in Mauritius on 1 February 1835. This arose largely in response to humanitarian pressures. Groups such as the Anti-Slavery Society sought not only to end the brutal system of enslaved labour but also to address the systematic marginalisation of people of colour from colonial society and to reform standards of social and moral conduct among both black and white populations. With the benefit of tuition by humanitarian agents, former slaves would take their place within a new society of free labourers, negotiating with planters and farmers for the terms on which their labour would be sold, and working more productively because they were now to be driven by their own desire for consumption rather than by the lash. The intention was, therefore, not to destroy the plantation sectors of these colonies but rather to rebalance them away from slavery towards a more efficient, humane system of free labour, but one ultimately still marked by social and economic hierarchies. The grant of £20 million to slave-owners in compensation was intended to aid this process by enabling planters to clear their debts and retool their plantations to meet the new conditions of free labour. This article examines one aspect of the system, the £1.5 million of this compensation that found its way into the banks founded in these territories between 1835 and 1840, and how it helped the process of transition in South Africa in particular. In the sugar colonies of the Caribbean and Mauritius, the money supported a new system of indentured plantation labour; in South Africa, it was channelled into banks that supported the existing agriculture of the western Cape and the expansion of settler capitalism in the eastern Cape. This enabled planters and farmers to ride out emancipation with far fewer changes to the wider societies and economies of the former slave colonies than humanitarians and abolitionists had hoped.

Economic compensation has been documented in many studies globally as an important strategy for enhancing acceptance by local residents of potentially hazardous facilities. Based on attribution theory, the present study investigates the situation for Waste-to-Energy (WTE) incineration plants using a questionnaire survey conducted with adjacent residents to four selected WTE incineration plants located in the Yangtze River Delta region, China. The results indicate that economic compensation effectively improves residents’ acceptance by being positively associated with their perceived economic benefit and trust in the local government, but is negatively associated with their perceived risks. Of these, trust plays the most vital role. The findings contribute to the literature on decision-making of locally unwanted land use siting in China by understanding the effects of economic compensation on local resident acceptance; and is of great significance for other countries involved in establishing sustainable municipal solid waste disposal systems of their own.

Facilitating benefit and resource acquisition to assist clients is a major responsibility of medical social workers, requiring them to have a thorough knowledge of community resources, legislation, and regulations. The aim of the current study was to examine knowledge of the Law for Compensation of Scalp Ringworm Victims and ringworm-related irradiation damage among 101 social workers employed in diverse healthcare settings in Israel. We found that 65.3% of the social workers were aware of the law, but only 40.6% were aware of the health effects of scalp ringworm irradiation. Media coverage and clients who underwent scalp ringworm irradiation were social workers' major sources of knowledge. Working with former ringworm patients had the strongest association with knowledge of the law and of ringworm-related irradiation damage. Results highlight the important contribution of exposure to clients' experiences and knowledge to expand social workers' knowledge of health issues.

In this study, we examine how a CFO’s social ties with non-CEO senior managers in the same firm affect the likelihood of financial restatements. We categorize social ties as either professional or personal, and find that the two types of ties have distinct effects. Our findings show that CFOs’ professional ties with senior managers are associated with a lower likelihood of financial restatements. Interestingly, the effects of CFO personal ties are related to a firm’s operational performance, in that such ties are associated with a higher (lower) likelihood of financial restatements when operational performance is poor (good). Overall, our findings are consistent with the notion that CFO social ties with senior managers may give rise to both information sharing and arm-in-arm behavior.

Background Informed consent is an obligatory requirement for research engaging human subjects. Informed consent form (ICF) should be provided for human subjects to confirm their willingness for voluntary participation in a study. Ethical and legal obligations necessitate the presence of informed consent essential items to be built into the ICF. Objective To evaluate the content of ICFs obtained from different genetic studies accomplished in Jordan and their adherence to ethical guidelines proposed by the International Conference on Harmonization-Good Clinical Practice (ICHGCP). Methods and Measures A total of 44 ICFs obtained from master theses and grant proposals at two major universities in Jordan were analyzed according to the good clinical practice criteria proposed by ICHGCP. ICFs were scored for the presence or absence of ICF main items/categories. Results Results show inadequate information present in the examined ICFs. The highest information score was 17 out of 20, while the lowest score was one out of 20. The average score for all studied ICFs was 6.18±3.65. Among essential items/categories that were absent from the majority of studied ICFs were a statement about voluntary participation, confidentiality of data, compensation to study participants, risk/benefits of the study, and researchers' contact information. Conclusion The ICFs were missing a number of required items. This could reflect inadequate knowledge about minimal informed consent requirements among Jordanian investigators highlighting the need for research ethical training in the country.
