In this qualitative study, critical race theory is used as a theoretical lens to analyze the perceptions of BSW/MSW faculty, students, and staff regarding the factors that contribute to the effective delivery of diversity and social justice content through a required course at a large public university in the Southwest. The findings of this research shed light on the crucial role of the implicit curriculum and curricular infusion in supporting, and creating barriers to, the delivery of diversity and social justice content through a designated required course.

Prolonged conflict in South Sudan exacerbated gender disparities and inequities. This study assessed differences in attitudes towards gender inequitable norms and practices by sex, age and education to inform programming. Applying community-based participatory research methodology, 680 adult respondents, selected by quota sampling, were interviewed in seven South Sudanese communities from 2009 to 2011. The verbally administered survey assessed attitudes using the Gender Equitable Men scale. Data were stratified by sex, age and education. Of 680 respondents, 352 were female, 326 were male and two did not report their sex. The majority of respondents agreed with gender inequitable household roles, but the majority disagreed with gender inequitable practices (i.e., early marriage, forced marriage and inequitable education of girls). Respondents who reported no education were more likely than those who reported any education to agree with gender inequitable practices (all p < 0.03) except for forced marriage (p = 0.07), and few significant differences were observed when these responses were stratified by sex and by age. The study reveals agreement with gender inequitable norms in the household but an overall disagreement with gender inequitable practices in sampled communities. The findings support that education of both women and men may promote gender equitable norms and practices.

This article explores the text of three plays by Tennessee Williams that construct female characters and shape their personalities through a myriad of negative stereotypes and pathologies associated with the fat (white) woman. Dramaturgically speaking, the strong female characters portrayed in these texts disrupt the stasis of the play with their immoderate behavior and therefore drive the plot forward. Although the plays do not all explicitly call for fat actresses, within the texts there are subtle semiotics that connect the excessive behavior of the character with her body type. These examples suggest that Williams capitalizes on cultural fears and prejudices concerning the (fat) female body and use associations explicitly linked to fat/consuming women to create characters who embody “fat behavior,” and thus contribute to dramatic conflict within the play.

A national (USA) student‐led, case‐based CLinician/Administrator Relationship Improvement OrganizatioN (CLARION) competition focuses students in medical and related healthcare programs on the provision of healthcare that is safe, timely, equitable, patient‐centred, effective and efficient. Students work in four‐person, inter‐professional teams to research and analyse a designated case. They then present their findings and recommendations to a panel of independent judges. Students, with support from their faculty advisors, approach the case as they see fit. Following initial participation in this CLARION competition, an inter‐professional team of students from two universities and their advisory faculty developed a two‐semester, pre‐competition course as a model to facilitate transformation in healthcare education. Community pharmacies play an important role in providing services to drug users, having provided needle exchange and substitution therapy services for a number of years. Previous studies of these services and the problems faced in implementing them have focused on the attitude and experiences of pharmacists. However, with the increasing use of pharmacy support staff in a range of expanded roles, it is also appropriate to consider this group. This article aims to qualitatively explore the experiences, attitudes, and training needs of pharmacy support staff involved in providing services to drug users. Copies of the questionnaire were issued to a 10% sample of community pharmacies and distributed to up to five support staff working in the pharmacy. About 28% of college students smoke tobacco, and many will continue smoking into adulthood. Although little is known about how to help college students quit smoking, 1 promising strategy is healthcare providers' advice. To estimate their life-time receipt of brief advice and to identify characteristics that predict who may receive that advice, 348 college students completed a survey about their smoking and related practices. Seventy-seven percent of the smokers (73% of the students) were asked about smoking. Of those smokers, 57% were advised to quit, 22% were given advice about quitting, 5% were helped with setting a quit date, and 4% were offered follow-up. Occasional smokers were less likely than daily smokers to be advised to quit. Although 36.2% of the smokers did not report their smoking accurately, smokers who were accurate were more likely to be advised to quit and to be given advice about quitting.

The tourism industry has developed a range of voluntary initiatives such as certification programmes as a means to improving environmental performance. The plethora of programmes and their criteria, benchmarks, monitoring and assessment methods raise questions of credibility. A WTO study conducted in 2001 revealed over 7,000 certified products worldwide. Of 500 voluntary initiatives examined, only 59 certification/ecolabel programmes had the basic requirements of a credible programme. This study produced a series of recommendations to improve the effectiveness of these initiatives.
