This study aimed to investigate the predictive effect of problematic behaviours on cognitive tempo and attention level of 60-66 months old children attending preschool education institutions. The research data were obtained from 155 children between 60 and 66 months old attending independent kindergartens affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Malatya city centre in 2018-2019 academic year. Regression analysis was performed to examine the mediating role; Bootstrap analysis was used in order to determine direct and indirect path coefficients in regression models. As a result of the findings obtained from the study, while the cognitive tempo of the children included in the sample had a significant effect on attention, there was no significant effect of the cognitive effect on the mediating variables, and the mediating variables on the attention. Therefore, it is seen that behavioural problems do not have a significant role in the effect of cognitive tempo on attention.

The purpose of the study is to determine the effectiveness of the "My Body is Special" Training Program (MBS-TP), which was developed using the creative drama method to gain information about body recognition and body safety in preventing sexual abuse in children. This is an experimental study conducted with a control group using a pretest/posttest design. This study was carried out in two preschools in Turkey, involving 87 children in the 5-6 age group. MBS-TP was applied to children in the intervention group through eight sessions over 3 weeks. Results indicate that the body's private areas were guessed at lower rates in the intervention group in the pretest (vagina/vulva 13.6%, penis 2.3%) than the posttest (vagina/vulva 77.3%, penis 68.2%). In the control group, in both the pretest (vagina/vulva 7.7%, penis 0%) and posttest (vagina/vulva 11.5%, penis 0%) knowledge was at similarly low rates. There was a statistically significant increase in the knowledge of "saying, doing, telling, reporting" skills of protecting their bodies for children in the intervention group in the posttest. The "MBS-TP" was found to be effective in increasing ability to recognize parts of the body and body safety techniques for preventing sexual abuse in children aged 5-6.

In this study, we worked with both Turkish and U.S. samples to reveal how cultural influences might manifest themselves in the context of child-teacher relationships from children's perspectives. There were 243 preschoolers and 26 classrooms included in the U.S. sample. In the Turkish sample, 211 preschool children from 41 classrooms participated. Data were obtained via interviews and analyzed based on thematic analysis method. Three main categories were identified as positive, negative, and neutral relationship perception. In the Turkish sample, the frequency of the negative relationship perception of children toward their teachers was found to be much higher than positive and neutral relationship perceptions. In the U.S. sample, the positive relationship perception of children was found to be higher than negative and neutral relationship perceptions. Neutral relationship perception was found to be more frequently expressed by children in the U.S. sample. This is one of the leading studies giving an opportunity to hear children's voices about their relationship perceptions with their teachers, specifically with a cross-cultural viewpoint.

This paper explores legislative provision and pre-school education policy in England over the course of the twentieth century. Within the Croatian educational system, the school readiness programme is defined by the obligation of attending a pre-school curriculum in the year before school. Besides facilitating the transition into school, the programme also focuses on the development of early literacy skills, where play has a significant role. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyse the types of play being applied during this pre-school programme. Forty- two future educators (third-year students) and eight early childhood educators participated in the study. Qualitative methodology was used in the analysis of the students’ written preparation within the course Language-Communication Integrated Curriculum. It was found that most students independently developed incentives and use different types of play in their planning. Quantitative methodology was used to analyse collected data from observing educators enaging through different types of play, and similar results were determined. These findings suggest a positive impact on the development of early literacy skills and children's well-being. Since the different play activities did not carry equal elements of early literacy, the study has strong implications for the modification of educators’ study programmes in Croatia.

Grounded in the sociocultural perspective, this paper analyses current Croatian theory and practice on the transition to school and addresses the importance of fostering a play- based pedagogy and symbolic play in particular. Despite the contemporary theoretical background on early childhood and children’s transition to school, the mainstream readiness discourse is still dominant in practice, building a gap between theory and practice. In Croatia, the preschool year of kindergarten is strongly influenced by school-like activities as opposed to play-based pedagogy in the earlier years of kindergarten. The symbolic play, referred to as the queen of activities (Slunjski and Ljubetić, 2014. “Play and its Pedagogical Potential in a Preschool Institution.” Croatian Journal of Education 16 (1): 127–141. https://hrcak.srce.hr/117857), is repressed by the academic activities. The activities characterised and overly influenced by an adult’s direct pedagogical approach pose an endangerment to the basic principles of play. This paper highlights the significance of fostering children’s symbolic play in the year preceding primary school as an alternative to the prevailing practice of developing exclusively academic skills.

Historically Danish preschool has emphasised play and downplayed curricular planning. Over the last 20 years, there has been heightened emphasis on learning and goal orientation. This article explores the consequential framing of play as result of that shift. This is done first by discussing the changes in policy and discourse in Denmark in particular the introduction of a preschool curriculum in 2004 and the accompanying heightened emphasis on ‘learning’. Second, by comparing ethnographic studies from 2000 with a recently completed research project ‘Appropriate readiness’. This project focused on children aged 5 years old in preschool and how their parents and pedagogues viewed readiness and how they acted to make children ready for school. This ethnographic study identifies increased emphasis on preparation, but a continued focus on ‘the social’ child. The historical change in the position of play in preschool is analysed with Bernstein's concepts of pedagogic framing, classification alongside visible and invisible pedagogy. In the closing section, we discuss the latest 2018 Danish preschool curriculum revision and consider to what extent this points to a return to a play-based practice.
