This paper considers the perception and cost benefits of electric vehicles on the road - can electric vehicles boost a heavily reliant tourist economy and assist in reducing Barbados' foreign exchange burden? The paper also explores the utility perspective - and asks an important question, can electric vehicles and solar energy contribute to supporting the grid in small island states? As the utility on the island seeks to reduce its dependence on imported oil by increasing the penetration of renewable energy Barbados is now presented with the opportunity to carry out a holistic view of its energy landscape and shape opportunities to integrate both centralised and distributed clean power generation alongside consumer demand-side drivers.

The increasing effects of climate change and extreme weather events on the operation of power systems highlight the need for developing effective techniques and models for evaluating the challenges that power systems may have to deal with in the future for maintaining high levels of resilience. Within this context, the aim of the `Resilient Electricity Networks for Great Britain (RESNET)' project is to develop and demonstrate a comprehensive approach to analyse the effects of climate-related changes on the resilience of the Great Britain's electricity system, and to develop tools for quantifying the value of adaptation measures that would enhance its resilience. This paper presents an overview of the key research activities and findings of RESNET project, specifically addressing possible climate change implications related to demand and supply scenarios, component ratings, and impact of extreme weather on system reliability. The final aim is to provide insights on various climate and weather-related challenges that the Great Britain's electricity system might face in the future.

Critical infrastructures important to society are at risk from natural hazards and man-made events, ranging from climate change to terrorism. The awareness of the potential consequences in socio-economic terms of losing the functionality and availability of this infrastructure has grown in the past two decades. The result has been considerable research effort into understanding our infrastructure systems, how they are interconnected and the levels of risk that exist from the variety of hazards they face. A significant number of infrastructure related risk and resilience policies, plans and supporting methods of analysis and assessment have been produced. This paper reviews current thinking regarding risk and resilience of infrastructure, and in particular that of transportation systems. The aim is to illustrate the key concepts, identify developments and signpost sources of suitable information.

Exploring the requirements for the coordination of strategic and tactical control of the UK's regional and local highway networks, this paper looks at the organisational and systems related requirements for information and data flow. The delivery of time-critical operational information can not only increase the performance of wholesale regional networks, assisting authorities in achieving performance and improvement targets, but also contribute to the climate change agenda by reducing transport related emissions which typically contribute considerably to issues in Air Quality Management Areas. The advent of ever increasing systems deployment at local and regional level, brings both a requirement and an opportunity for closer coordination and integration. (8 pages)

This paper examines how the CO2 cost of implementing and operating some ITS schemes could be almost halved through the use of renewable energy. A case study analysis of an ITS scheme which includes 40Km of Variable Mandatory Speed Limits (VMSL) and road lighting shows that wind turbine generation is a feasible power supply option, with an estimated payback period of 18.6 years. Given that the expected life of a wind turbine is 25 years, this arrangement is demonstrated to be an economically viable solution. Climate change poses a major challenge to society and opportunities such as this to reduce CO2 emissions should be implemented to help address this global issue. (6 pages)
