This article provides the first account and analysis of the publication of Hannah Wolley (c.1622-c.in or after 1674), the prolific but understudied author of five different domestic manuals between 1661 and 1674. The publication of The Ladies Directory in 1661 and its reprinting in 1662 provide the context for an exploration of the opportunities and challenges facing a first-time female 'Authress' (as Wolley was described on the title page) being published. As a non-elite but educated working woman, Wolley did not fit the mould of her female published precursors, and nor did the format and contents of her texts. This study shows how Wolley and other stakeholders in the production of The Ladies Directory navigated a challenging period in English book production, through conceiving the book as the first instalment in a series of domestic texts that could be printed separately but bound together; and argues that she used print as but one strand of her commercial 'offer', alongside private tuition and selling readymade medications. In this essay, we examine how the popular genres of the fairy tale and the merveilleux influenced Françoise de Graffigny's writing of Lettres d'une Péruvienne (Letters from a Peruvian Woman). We demonstrate how the author incorporates elements of the wonderous in her descriptions and themes, especially in Letter 35. In a comparison of the fairy tale that Graffigny herself wrote, La Princesse Azerolle, ou l'excès de la constance (Princess Azerolle, or the Excess of Constancy), to her famous novel, we uncover the thematic elements that appear in both. This paper explores how Sarah Fielding's The Little Female Academy (1749) and The Lives of Cleopatra and Octavia (1757) made feminist, formal, and pedagogical interventions in the novel genre. Both books feature morally flexible characters who show their female communities how to critique and create excellent, plausible fictions. These literary women have too long been flattened in our scholarship into the quintessential anti-exemplars of the conduct book genre: a catch-all for unorthodox women's writing in the eighteenth century. Unlike many of her female contemporaries, who shunned public scrutiny of their private lives, Charlotte Smith invited biographical readings of her work. In prologues and prefaces, which engendered both sympathy and derision, Smith decries her position as a wronged wife and highlights her devotion as a working mother. Similarly suffering, saintly wives and abusive husbands populate her fiction, while the speakers of her popular Elegiac Sonnets bemoan their tragic lot. Critics still follow the author's invitation. However, what do we do when the facts of a biography unsettle the aesthetic project supposedly based on it? This essay tackles this question by arguing that while Smith uses the figure of the slave in her writing as a rhetorical and aesthetic device to emphasize the often gendered injustice she faced, both her 1796 novel Marchmont and her letters reveal how the pathos produced by this figure collides with the monetary potential of enslaved persons' labor. Smith's antislavery views appear in her poetry and novels, such as Marchmont , in which the title character is imprisoned for debt and describes himself as a slave; however, it is income from enslaved persons that ultimately enables his freedom. A similar irony reappears four years after Marchmont 's publication, when Smith negotiated the sale of a Barbados estate owned by a family trust. This essay asks how far Smith's apparent invitation to read autobiographically really goes and how, as critics, we should grapple with this approach when it produces conflicting accounts not only in her literary texts, but also within her biography itself. As scholars who work in literary biography, and especially as scholars who are interested in women's literary biography, many of us are used to working with fragments, ephemera, and the scraps that have somehow survived the centuries. On the one hand, it seems clear that if we want a better picture of the past (if we want a better understanding of how women lived and worked in the eighteenth century), then it is not enough to focus only on the well-known or the clearly exceptional. On the other hand, the impulse towards recovery for recovery's sake brings with it its own set of methodological challenges and assumptions. For example, much recovery is rooted in archival work—in the attempt to find and piece together the fragments of the past into a coherent account. And yet, those of us who do archival work know that the archive often actively resists coherence; it is instead filled with gaps, with incomplete traces of lives that can never be fully tracked. In other words, in writing the lives of the women of the past we need to look past recovery and reconstruction as an end in itself and begin to think productively about how we interact with and represent the archives themselves, the information they contain, and especially the gaps in the archival record. In this essay, I explore the case of Sally Wesley—the Methodist and poet—in order to suggest that archives have affects and that in order to better read them and better reconstruct women's lives, we must become more comfortable with living within these archives of feelings. This essay revisits the 1980s debate between Nancy K. Miller, who was in favor of examining an author's biography, and Peggy Kamuf, who argued against it. In 2008, Toril Moi called for renewed theoretical engagement with their positions. I propose instead that we use what I call the Miller-Kamuf Test to evaluate how much relative weight biography and textual analysis have been given in the scholarship on a particular woman author and then use our own scholarly projects to contribute toward a better balance. Because a balanced approach can help us remember the difficulties women faced in publishing and even writing in the first place, without imposing the very stereotypes on women's literature that keep it marginalized, it can combat the destructive assumption that because eighteenth-century women authors were often inadequately educated, they were capable of writing about their own experiences, but not of offering prescriptions for changing society. In this essay, I consider two case studies. Nothing is known about the life of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's correspondent, Henriette ***, and studies of her work have relied on textual analysis alone, but imagining possible biographies for the author opens up a new range of readings. On the other hand, setting aside Louise d'Épinay's biography, which has overshadowed the textual analysis of her epistolary novel, L'Histoire de Madame de Montbrillant , results in our being able to reclassify that work as first and foremost a novel of education and reveals d'Épinay's previously hidden contributions to Enlightenment thought. The two cases demonstrate the valuable new insights that can come from balancing biography and textual analysis and ultimately demonstrate the interdependence and necessity of both Miller's and Kamuf's positions. The introduction offers a historical and conceptual frame for the four essays that make up the cluster on biography and women writers. We discuss the disputed status of biographical criticism in the 1980s and 1990s, when it became a crux of disagreement between poststructuralist and feminist theorists, as well as the lingering questions and dilemmas that biography raises in more recent scholarship on women's literature. Surveying the arguments of the four contributions to the cluster, the introduction stresses the particular turns that biographical criticism has taken at the present moment of inquiry into women's literary history, such as the unique challenges posed by the study of obscure and forgotten women and the fruitful effects of recent collaborative approaches. We also emphasize the particular utility of biography as a tool to access hidden areas of women's literary activity and a means of questioning the narratives that have solidified around canonical women authors. This article situates itself among recent work that focuses on the friendship plot. The emergence of the friendship plot in eighteenth-century literature can be attributed to moral sense theorist Francis Hutcheson and his followers David Hume and Adam Smith, for whom friendship was essential to strengthening the moral sense of the individual and for creating a moral society. The prevalence of the trope of friendship and its related virtues of loyalty and benevolence in the late eighteenth-century novel is evidence of this influence. Recent work on friendship in the early novel has emphasized the importance of equality in these friendship tropes. This article contends that these novels often instead represent complicated asymmetry within British society through socially dependent protagonists. In reading Maria Edgeworth's Belinda (1801) and the anonymously written The Woman of Colour (1808), this article shows that although the dependent friend protagonist does not act without self-interest, in her ability to elicit sympathy and forge friendships with characters in more powerful positions, she provides opportunities to unravel gender and racial prejudices. This article analyzes the relationship between verse citation and gendered violence in Samuel Richardson's Clarissa (1747–48). While critics have shown the influence of women writers on Richardson's novels, none has observed the role of verse citation or the element of gendered violence connected discursively to that influence in Clarissa. Verse citation in Clarissa evidences both Clarissa 's ultimate agency and the role of women writers in shaping Richardson's novel and, perhaps, the development of the eighteenth-century novel. Since she was commemorated as a saint in 387, Monica of Hippo has come to represent ideals of motherhood to successive generations. This article considers how three nineteenth-century women writers--Anna Jameson, Christina Rossetti, and Harriet Beecher Stowe--engage with this legacy to offer new ways of imagining the empowering social potential of faith. In my analysis, I indicate how they contribute to the Incarnation-inflected discourse of the second half of the nineteenth century and provide a helpful backdrop to understanding recent feminist appraisals of Augustine. Francis Stainforth (1797–1866), a British Anglican curate, owned the largest private library of Anglophone women's writing in the nineteenth century, comprised of works published between 1546 and 1866. This article argues that a study of Stainforth's library catalog, and the thousands of rarely studied works and authors within it, recovers women's book history from a historical perspective. The existing scholarship on the link between feminism and antivivisectionism has not fully contextualized the innovative rhetorical strategies and traditional forms of female writing that empowered Louise Lindaf- Hageby's political message in her published diary, "The Shambles of Science" (1903). Drawing upon a female literary tradition of refashioning scientific findings for non-scientific audiences, Lind-af-Hageby developed a record of first-hand observations and scientific arguments against vivisection that placed her on an equal footing with the men in her profession. At the same time, her work challenged contemporary gender scripts of female antivivisectionists as sentimental and uninformed. This paper adopts both a "long view" of "Shambles" form and its place within women's writing on "Nature" and science between 1890 and 1918, and a "wide view" texts to situate this work within and to assess the interaction of relevant currents of women's writing, feminist thought, and antivivisection advocacy.
