Ocean sound speed is important for underwater acoustic applications, such as communications, navigation and localization, where the assumption of uniformly distributed sound speed profiles (SSPs) is generally used and greatly degrades the performance of underwater acoustic systems. The acquisition of SSPs is necessary for the corrections of the sound ray propagation paths. However, the inversion of SSPs is challenging due to the intricate relations of interrelated physical ocean elements and suffers from the high costs of calculations and hardware deployments. This paper proposes a novel sound speed inversion method based on multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and machine learning, which adapts to large-scale sea regions. Firstly, the datasets of SSPs are generated utilizing the Argo thermohaline profiles and the empirical formulas of the sound speed. Then, the SSPs are analyzed utilizing the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the dimensions of the feature space as well as the computational load. Considering the nonlinear regression relations of SSPs and the observed datasets, a general framework for sound speed inversion is formulated, which combines the designed machine learning models with the reduced-dimensional feature representations, multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and water temperature data. After being well trained, the proposed machine learning models realize the accurate inversion of the targeted ocean region by inputting the real-time ocean environmental data. Traditional methods of orthogonal basis function decomposition have been extensively used to detect magnetic anomaly signals. However, the determination of the relative velocity between the detection platform and the magnetic target remains elusive in practical detection. And, the non-ideal uniform motion of the magnetic target further complicates the process and adversely impacts the detector's performance. To address this challenge, this paper introduces an adaptive scale factor method based on orthogonal basis function decomposition. This new method can be used to adjust the relative velocity between the detection platform and the magnetic target and to refine the characteristic time in the basis functions. In this paper, a mathematical relationship between the scale factor and the relative velocity is established, which is subsequently fitted into a Gauss function curve. The optimal scale factor, denoted as β, is adaptively chosen from the fitting curve when the magnetic target moves at a non-ideal uniform velocity with an unknown motion state. The results of simulations indicate that the scale factor improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the magnetic anomaly signals in a non-ideal state. And, this method can improve the energy value of OBF decomposition by 17.7%. Simultaneously, this method ensures that the moment the magnetic target passes the CPA coincides with the energy peak of the orthogonal basis detection, which improves the accuracy by 54.1% compared with the traditional method. Magnetic target localization using the magnetic gradient tensor (MGT) plays a significant role in underwater localization. However, this method inherently has a localization dead zone, which presents challenges for real-world applications. This paper delves into the root cause of this dead zone, identifying the non-invertibility of the MGT when the magnetic moment vector is orthogonal to the position vector from the target to the observation point. To tackle this issue, a method based on the eigenvector constraints is proposed. By constructing an objective function with eigenvector constraints and leveraging the property that its gradient at the observation point is zero, we derive an equivalent expression for the inverse of MGT that always holds and further develop a dead-zone-free localization method. To validate the robustness and efficacy of the proposed localization method, a comparative analysis with other methods is conducted. Simulation results in a 10 m × 10 m area under Gaussian noise demonstrate the proposed method's capability to eliminate the dead zone and achieve an average localization error of 0.032 m. Experimental results further demonstrate that the proposed method eliminates the localization dead zone and exhibits greater robustness than the dominant method in the normal region. In summation, this paper provides an effective method for eliminating localization dead zone, offering a more stable and reliable method for magnetic target localization in practice. In this paper, we provide a collocation spectral scheme for systems of nonlinear Caputo–Hadamard differential equations. Since the Caputo–Hadamard operators contain logarithmic kernels, their solutions can not be well approximated using the usual spectral methods that are classical polynomial-based schemes. Hence, we construct a non-polynomial spectral collocation scheme, describe its effective implementation, and derive its convergence analysis in both L 2 and L ∞ . In this article, we consider the correction of metric matrices in quasi-Newton methods (QNM) from the perspective of machine learning theory. Based on training information for estimating the matrix of the second derivatives of a function, we formulate a quality functional and minimize it by using gradient machine learning algorithms. We demonstrate that this approach leads us to the well-known ways of updating metric matrices used in QNM. The learning algorithm for finding metric matrices performs minimization along a system of directions, the orthogonality of which determines the convergence rate of the learning process. The degree of learning vectors' orthogonality can be increased both by choosing a QNM and by using additional orthogonalization methods. It has been shown theoretically that the orthogonality degree of learning vectors in the Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno (BFGS) method is higher than in the Davidon–Fletcher–Powell (DFP) method, which determines the advantage of the BFGS method. In our paper, we discuss some orthogonalization techniques. One of them is to include iterations with orthogonalization or an exact one-dimensional descent. As a result, it is theoretically possible to detect the cumulative effect of reducing the optimization space on quadratic functions. Another way to increase the orthogonality degree of learning vectors at the initial stages of the QNM is a special choice of initial metric matrices. In recent years, MIMO high-frequency surface wave radar (MIMO-HFSWR) plays an increasingly important role in sea surveillance because of its wide-area surveillance capabilities. In signal processing, the coherent targets with the same distance and speed can only be distinguished in the angle dimension. However, HF radar's angular resolution is poor because of the restrictions of the aperture, which causes aliasing of targets on the range–angle (RA) spectrum. Traditional super-resolution algorithms, such as MUSIC, are also inapplicable because of the targets' coherence. Therefore, the spatial smoothing algorithm is usually used to realize the decoherence of echo at the cost of array aperture. The loss of array aperture makes the algorithm fail when there are too many targets in the echo. Aiming at this problem, this paper proposes an iterative calculation method (iterative calculation via weight vector orthogonal decomposition, IC-WORD) to estimate the angle of multiple coherent targets. Through the verification of simulation, it is proved that IC-WORD has better performance than the traditional spatial smoothing algorithm. More specifically, IC-WORD can correct spectral peak shift, improve angle measurement accuracy, and still operate stably under the condition of multiple coherent targets. The surface currents in coastal areas are closely related to the ecological environment and human activities, and are influenced by both local and remote factors of different timescales, resulting in complex genesis and multi-timescale characteristics. In this research, 9-year-long, hourly high-frequency radar (HFR) surface current observations are utilized together with satellite remote sensing reanalysis products and mooring data, and based on the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) and correlation analysis, we revealed the multi-timescale characteristics of the surface currents in Fremantle Sea (32°S), Southwestern Australia, and explored the corresponding driving factors as well as the impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the nearshore currents. Results show that the currents on the slope are dominated by the southward Leeuwin Current (LC), and the currents within the shelf are dominated by winds, which are subject to obvious diurnal and seasonal variations. The strong bathymetry variation there, from a wide shelf in the north to a narrow shelf in this study region, also plays an important role, resulting in the frequent occurrence of nearshore eddies. In addition, the near-zonal winds south of 30°S in winter contribute to the interannual variability of the Leeuwin Current at Fremantle, especially in 2011, when the onshore shelf circulation is particularly strong because of the climatic factors, together with the wind-driven offshore circulation, which results in significant and long-lasting eddies. The southward Leeuwin Current along Southwestern Australia shows a strong response to interannual climatic variability. During La Niña years, the equatorial thermal anomalies generate the westward anomalies in winds and equatorial currents, which in turn strengthen the Leeuwin Current and trigger the cross-shelf current as well as downwelling within the shelf at Fremantle, whereas during El Niño years, the climate anomalies and the response of coastal currents are opposite. This paper provides insights into the multi-timescale nature of coastal surface currents and the relative importance of different driving mechanisms. It also demonstrates the potential of HFR to reveal the response of nearshore currents to climate anomalies when combined with other multivariate data. The atmospheric density of the thermosphere is a fundamental parameter for spacecraft launch and orbit control. Under magnetic storm conditions, the thermospheric atmospheric density experiences significant fluctuations, which have a negative impact on spacecraft control. Exploring thermospheric density during geomagnetic storms can help to mitigate the effects of such events. Research on the inversion of accelerometer measurements for different satellites and the variations of atmospheric density under extreme conditions is still in its infancy. In this paper, the distribution of atmospheric density during three geomagnetic storms is investigated from the inversion results of the Swarm-C accelerometer. Three major geomagnetic storms and their recovery phases are selected as case studies. The thermospheric density obtained by Swarm-C is separated into day and night regions. The empirical orthogonal function analysis method is used to study the spatiotemporal distribution of thermospheric density during geomagnetic storms. The results indicate that storms have a more significant impact on nighttime thermospheric density. The impact of magnetic storms on the temporal distribution of thermospheric density is considerable. The first-order empirical orthogonal function (EOF) time coefficient value on the day after the storm is the largest, reaching 2–3 times that before the magnetic storm. The impact of magnetic storms on atmospheric density is mainly reflected in the time distribution. The spatial distribution of atmospheric density is less affected by magnetic storms and is relatively stable in the short term. The impact of magnetic storms on the spatial distribution of nighttime thermospheric density is more significant than that of daytime regions, and the response of daytime regions to magnetic storms is slower. Hyperinsulinemia is a condition characterized by excessively high levels of insulin in the bloodstream. It can exist for many years without any symptomatology. The research presented in this paper was conducted from 2019 to 2022 in cooperation with a health center in Serbia as a large cross-sectional observational study of adolescents of both genders using datasets collected from the field. Previously used analytical approaches of integrated and relevant clinical, hematological, biochemical, and other variables could not identify potential risk factors for developing hyperinsulinemia. This paper aims to present several different models using machine learning (ML) algorithms such as naive Bayes, decision tree, and random forest and compare them with a new methodology constructed based on artificial neural networks using Taguchi's orthogonal vector plans (ANN-L), a special extraction of Latin squares. Furthermore, the experimental part of this study showed that ANN-L models achieved an accuracy of 99.5% with less than seven iterations performed. Furthermore, the study provides valuable insights into the share of each risk factor contributing to the occurrence of hyperinsulinemia in adolescents, which is crucial for more precise and straightforward medical diagnoses. Regional persistent extreme cold events are meteorological disasters that cause serious harm to people's lives and production; however, they are very difficult to predict. Low-temperature weather systems and their effects have a significant low-frequency oscillation period (10–20 d and 30–60 d). This paper uses deep learning to analyze the extended-range time scale and predict regional persistent extreme cold events. The dominant low-frequency oscillation components of cold events are obtained via wavelet transform and Butterworth filtering. The low-frequency oscillation component is decomposed via empirical orthogonal function decomposition to extract the main spatial mode and time coefficient. A convolutional neural network is used to establish the correlation between large-scale circulations and the time coefficient of the low-frequency oscillation component of the lowest temperature. This paper focuses on the collision-free formation tracking of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) with compound disturbances in complex ocean environments. We propose a novel finite-time extended state observer (FTESO)-based distributed dual closed-loop model predictive control scheme. Initially, a fast FTESO is designed to accurately estimate both model uncertainties and external disturbances for each subsystem. Subsequently, the outer-loop and inner-loop formation controllers are developed by integrating disturbance compensation with distributed model predictive control (DMPC) theory. With full consideration of the input and state constraints, we resolve the local information-based DMPC optimization problem to obtain the control inputs for each AUV, thereby preventing actuator saturation and collisions among AUVs. Moreover, to mitigate the increased computation caused by the control structure, the Laguerre orthogonal function is applied to alleviate the computational burden in time intervals. We also demonstrate the stability of the closed-loop system by applying the terminal state constraint. Finally, based on a connected directed topology, comparative simulations are performed under various control schemes to verify the robustness and superior performance of the proposed scheme. The Brazilian Amazon provides important hydrological cycle functions, including precipitation regimes that bring water to the people and environment and are critical to moisture recycling and transport, and represents an important variable for climate models to simulate accurately. This paper evaluates the performance of 13 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. This is done by discussing results from spatial pattern mapping, Taylor diagram analysis and Taylor skill score, annual climatology comparison, cumulative distribution analysis, and empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Precipitation analysis shows: (1) This region displays higher rainfall in the north-northwest and drier conditions in the south. Models tend to underestimate northern values or overestimate the central to northwest averages. (2) The southern Amazon has a more defined dry season (June, July, and August) and wet season (December, January, and February) and models simulate this well. The northern Amazon dry season tends to occur in August, September, and October and the wet season occurs in March, April, and May, and models are not able to capture the climatology as well. Models tend to produce too much rainfall at the start of the wet season and tend to either over- or under-estimate the dry season, although ensemble means typically display the overall pattern more precisely. (3) Models struggle to capture extreme values of precipitation except when precipitation values are close to 0. (4) EOF analysis shows that models capture the dominant mode of variability, which was the annual cycle or South American Monsoon System. (5) When all evaluation metrics are considered, the models that perform best are CESM2, MIROC6, MRIESM20, SAM0UNICON, and the ensemble mean. This paper supports research in determining the most up-to-date CMIP6 model performance of precipitation regime for 1981–2014 for the Brazilian Amazon. Results will aid in understanding future projections of precipitation for the selected subset of global climate models and allow scientists to construct reliable model ensembles, as precipitation plays a role in many sectors of the economy, including the ecosystem, agriculture, energy, and water security. Ocean remote-sensing satellite data have been widely applied in the areas of oceanography, meteorology, the environment, and many more fields in science and engineering. However, missing data due to cloud cover, equipment failure, etc., limit its application. Therefore, reconstruction of the missing data through an appropriate method is essential. The data-interpolating empirical orthogonal function (DINEOF) algorithm proposed by Beckers and Rixen (2003) is currently the most commonly used method for the reconstruction of missing data in large areas. However, the existing DINEOF algorithm adopts a random method to select the cross−validation points, which may underutilize effective information around the missing value points. In addition, the cross-validation points may be too concentrated in an area, thus being unable to reflect the overall characteristics of the data. This paper optimizes the method to select the cross-validation points so that the information around the missing values can be effectively utilized and to avoid the cross-validation points being too concentrated. On this basis, an improved validation-point DINEOF algorithm (IV−DINEOF) is proposed. An ideal dataset and a reanalysis dataset based on sea surface temperature (SST) are used to test the performance of the improved algorithm. Statistical analysis of the results shows that the data reconstruction performance of the IV−DINEOF algorithm is better than that of the DINEOF algorithm, and the computational efficiency is also improved. This paper presents a DC/AC converter consisting of two two-level inverters. The complex converter is built using two standard three-phase inverters: the main inverter (MI) and the auxiliary one (AI). The MI is controlled in a simple way to generate the stepped output voltage and the AI works as an active filter limiting the higher harmonics in the MI output voltage. The filtering process is based on the orthogonal space vector theory. A development and modification of the basic solution are presented here. The output voltage of the MI takes the shape of a stepped voltage comparable to the voltage generated by multilevel inverters. This paper proposes a new numerical method for solving single time-delayed stochastic differential equations via orthogonal functions. The basic principles of the technique are presented. The new method is applied to approximate two kinds of stochastic differential equations with additive and multiplicative noise. Excellence computational burden is achieved along with a O (h 2) convergence rate, which is better than former methods. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is one of the main greenhouse gases leading to global warming, and the ocean is the largest carbon reservoir on the earth that plays an important role in regulating CO2 concentration on a global scale. The column-averaged dry-air mole fraction of atmospheric CO2 (XCO2) is a key parameter in describing ocean carbon content. In this paper, the Data Interpolation Empirical Orthogonal Function (DINEOF) and the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) methods are combined to interpolate XCO2 data of Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) and Orbiting Carbon Observatory 3 (OCO-3) from January to December 2020 occurring within the geographical range of 15–45°N and 120–150°E. At the first stage of our proposed analysis, spatiotemporal information was used by the DINEOF method to perform XCO2 interpolation that improved data coverage; at the second stage, the DINEOF-generated interpolation results were regarded as soft data and were subsequently assimilated using the BME method to obtain improved XCO2 interpolation values. The performance of the synthetic DINEOF–BME interpolation method was evaluated by means of a five-fold cross-validation method. The results showed that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and the Bias of the DINEOF-based OCO-2 and OCO-3 interpolations were 2.106 ppm, 3.046 ppm, and 1.035 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, the MAE, RMSE, and Bias of the cross-validation results obtained by the DINEOF–BME were 1.285 ppm, 2.422 ppm, and −0.085 ppm, respectively, i.e., smaller than the results obtained by DINEOF. In addition, based on the in situ measured XCO2 data provided by the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON), the original OCO-2 and OCO-3 data were combined and compared with the interpolated products of the synthetic DINEOF–BME framework. The accuracy of the original OCO-2 and OCO-3 products is lower than the DINEOF–BME-generated XCO2 products in terms of MAE (1.751 ppm vs. 2.616 ppm), RMSE (2.877 ppm vs. 3.566 ppm) and Bias (1.379 ppm vs 1.622 ppm), the spatiotemporal coverage of XCO2 product also improved dramatically from 16% to 100%. Lastly, this study demonstrated the feasibility of the synthetic DINEOF–BME approach for XCO2 interpolation purposes and the ability of the BME method to be successfully combined with other techniques. PM2.5 and PM10 in the atmosphere seriously affect human health and air quality, a situation which has aroused widespread concern. In this paper, we analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations from 2016 to 2021 based on real-time monitoring data. In addition, we also explore the influence of meteorological conditions on pollutants. The results show that PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are similarly distribution in temporal and spatial from 2016 to 2021, and the average concentrations of both show a decreasing trend. The ratio of PM2.5 to PM10 is decreasing, indicating that the proportion of fine particles is declining. PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are higher in spring and winter, but lower in summer. Spatially, it shows a gradual shift from the characteristic of "high in the south and low in the north" to a uniform homogenization across districts. The spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 mass concentrations is synchronous by applying empirical orthogonal functions (EOF). The first EOF pattern exhibits a consistent characteristic of high in the southeast and low in the northwest. The second pattern EOF reflects the effect of impairing PM2.5 concentrations in the southeast during the winter of 2016–2018. The PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations are significantly negatively correlated with wind speed and precipitation in both spring and winter. On the other hand, from the perspective of the circulation situation, the southeasterly and weak westerly wind in spring produce convergence resulting in higher particulate matter concentrations in the south than in the north in Beijing. The westerly wind is flatter at 700 hPa geopotential height, which is conducive to the formation of stationary weather. The vertical direction of airflow in spring and winter is dominated by convergence and sinking, indicating the weak dispersion ability of the atmosphere. The reason for the accumulation of particulate matter at the surface is investigated, which is beneficial to provide the theoretical basis for air quality management and pollution control in Beijing. Ocean waves are crucial for driving various oceanic processes. In this study, the spatial and temporal distribution of significant wave height (SWH) in the North Pacific (NP) is analyzed using the 42-year ERA5 reanalysis dataset from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The presence of an ENSO signal is confirmed in wave fields of the North Pacific. Furthermore, the spatial distributions of swells and wind waves are analyzed using the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method, revealing that waves can transport large-scale signals from the NP to lower latitudes through swells. In addition, our research reveals a relationship between ENSO and Stokes drift in the NP. Stokes drift contributes positively to the maintenance of stable sea surface temperatures (SSTs) by transporting more (less) water towards the equatorial Pacific during El Niño (La Niña year) years. It is further noted that during strong ENSO events, the strength of the Stokes drift anomaly intensifies accordingly, which implies a strong link between wave-induced transport and ENSO. This paper presents a novel metaheuristic optimization algorithm inspired by the geometrical features of circles, called the circle search algorithm (CSA). The circle is the most well-known geometric object, with various features including diameter, center, perimeter, and tangent lines. The ratio between the radius and the tangent line segment is the orthogonal function of the angle opposite to the orthogonal radius. This angle plays an important role in the exploration and exploitation behavior of the CSA. To evaluate the robustness of the CSA in comparison to other algorithms, many independent experiments employing 23 famous functions and 3 real engineering problems were carried out. The statistical results revealed that the CSA succeeded in achieving the minimum fitness values for 21 out of the tested 23 functions, and the p-value was less than 0.05. The results evidence that the CSA converged to the minimum results faster than the comparative algorithms. Furthermore, high-dimensional functions were used to assess the CSA's robustness, with statistical results revealing that the CSA is robust to high-dimensional problems. Thailand is located in the Southeast Asian region, where the summer rainfall exhibits strong interannual variability, and the successful simulation of rainfall variation in Thailand by current climate models remains a challenge. Therefore, this paper evaluates the capability of the state-of-the-art Atmospheric GCM of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP-AGCM) in simulating summer rainfall over Thailand by comparing the model's results with ground-truth observation during 1981–2012. Generally, the model shows a certain skill in reproducing the observed spatial distribution of the summer rainfall climatology and its interannual variability over Thailand, although the model underestimated both rainfall amount and its variability. Using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, it is found that the IAP climate model reproduced creditably the spatial patterns of the first three dominant modes of summer rainfall in Thailand, whereas it underestimated the explained variance of the observed EOF-1 and overestimated the explained variance of the observed EOF-2 significantly. It was further found that the correlation between the observed rainfall anomalies in Thailand and the Niño3.4 index can be reproduced by the IAP model. However, the observed negative correlation is largely underestimated by the IAP climate model, and this could be the reason for the underestimation of explained variance of the EOF-1 by the IAP model. In a multi-node spacecraft or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) group, a multifunctional signal containing measurement, navigation, and communication functions is required to simplify the receiver structure, and to increase spectrum utilization. The paper proposes a multifunctional signal based on a binary offset carrier (BOC) and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation. The signals which carry different functions are orthogonal in the frequency domain, which causes the data transmission signal to not be affected by BOC signal. In addition, in the high carrier to noise ratio (C/N0), the spreading gain of the BOC signal ensures that the communication signal has a slight influence on navigation signals. Moreover, the multifunctional signal can achieve communication and measurement functions at the same frequency point and fast switching in multinodes. These advantages can simplify the receiver design and improve the frequency band utilization. Finally, in this study we completed the design and verification of the hardware system. Adequate estimation is a crucial factor for the implementation of software projects within set customer requirements. The use of Case Point Analysis (UCP) is the latest and most accurate method for estimating the effort and cost of realizing software products. This paper will present a new, improved UCP model constructed based on two different artificial neural network (ANN) architectures based on Taguchi Orthogonal Vector Plans. ANNs are an exceptional artificial intelligence tool that have been proven to be reliable and stable in this area of software engineering. The Taguchi method of Orthogonal Vector Plans is an optimization method that reduces the number of iterations required, which significantly shortens estimation time. The goal is to construct models that give a minimum magnitude relative error (MRE) value concerning previous approaches and techniques. A minimum number of iterations (less than six) and a minimum value of MMRE (less than 10%) have been achieved. In the paper, orthogonal transforms based on proposed symmetric, orthogonal matrices are created. These transforms can be considered as generalized Walsh–Hadamard Transforms. The simplicity of calculating the forward and inverse transforms is one of the important features of the presented approach. The conditions for creating symmetric, orthogonal matrices are defined. It is shown that for the selection of the elements of an orthogonal matrix that meets the given conditions, it is necessary to select only a limited number of elements. The general form of the orthogonal, symmetric matrix having an exponential form is also presented. Orthogonal basis functions based on the created matrices can be used for orthogonal expansion leading to signal approximation. An exponential form of orthogonal, sparse matrices with variable parameters is also created. Various versions of orthogonal transforms related to the created full and sparse matrices are proposed. Fast computation of the presented transforms in comparison to fast algorithms of selected orthogonal transforms is discussed. This paper presents an edge-based color image segmentation approach, derived from the method of particle motion in a vector image field, which could previously be applied only to monochrome images. Rather than using an edge vector field derived from a gradient vector field and a normal compressive vector field derived from a Laplacian-gradient vector field, two novel orthogonal vector fields were directly computed from a color image, one parallel and another orthogonal to the edges. These were then used in the model to force a particle to move along the object edges. The normal compressive vector field is created from the collection of the center-to-centroid vectors of local color distance images. The edge vector field is later derived from the normal compressive vector field so as to obtain a vector field analogous to a Hamiltonian gradient vector field. Using the PASCAL Visual Object Classes Challenge 2012 (VOC2012), the Berkeley Segmentation Data Set, and Benchmarks 500 (BSDS500), the benchmark score of the proposed method is provided in comparison to those of the traditional particle motion in a vector image field (PMVIF),Watershed, simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC), K-means, mean shift, and J-value segmentation (JSEG). This paper carries out an investigation of the orthogonal-polynomial approach to reshaping symmetric distributions to fit in with data requirements so as to cover the multivariate case. With this objective in mind, reference is made to the class of spherical distributions, given that they provide a natural multivariate generalization of univariate even densities. After showing how to tailor a spherical distribution via orthogonal polynomials to better comply with kurtosis requirements, we provide operational conditions for the positiveness of the resulting multivariate Gram-Charlier-like expansion, together with its kurtosis range. Matched field processing (MFP) is an effective method for underwater target imaging and localizing, but its performance is not guaranteed due to the nonuniqueness and instability problems caused by the underdetermined essence of MFP. By exploiting the sparsity of the targets in an imaging area, this paper proposes a compressive sensing MFP (CS-MFP) model from wave propagation theory by using randomly deployed sensors. In addition, the model's recovery performance is investigated by exploring the lower bounds of the coherence parameter of the CS dictionary. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the robustness of CS-MFP with respect to the displacement of the sensors. Subsequently, a coherence-excluding coherence optimized orthogonal matching pursuit (CCOOMP) algorithm is proposed to overcome the high coherent dictionary problem in special cases. A method for reconstructing weekly Baltic gridded sea levels was developed and tested. This method uses input data from tide gauge and altimetry observations. The reconstruction is based on sea level empirical orthogonal function (EOF) modes, calculated as spatiotemporal statistics from daily model reanalysis results available from the Copernicus Marine Service for the 1993–2021 period. In the semi-enclosed, tideless Baltic Sea, the four leading EOF modes cover 99% of the sea level variance. Several experiments with different combinations of input data were carried out. This method was validated against coastal tide gauges and altimetry data. The best reconstruction was obtained when both the tide gauges and altimetry data were used as inputs. An assessment of the centered root-mean-square difference (cRMSD) of the reconstruction versus the tide gauges revealed a value of 0.05 m, and a result of 0.10 m was revealed versus altimetry. The average coefficient of determination (R2) was determined to be 0.93 for the tide gauges and 0.82 for the altimetry data. In the cases where only one type of input data was used, the reconstruction worsened with respect to other data sources. Abstract: Tidal flats are dynamic coastal ecosystems continually reshaped by natural processes and human activities. This study investigates the application of Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis to the long-term profile evolution of tidal flats along the Jiansan Bend of the Qiantang River Estuary, China. By applying EOF analysis to profiles observed from 1984 to 2023, this study identifies dominant modes of variability and their spatial and temporal characteristics, offering insights into the complex sediment transport and morphological evolution processes. EOF analysis helps unravel the complex interactions between natural and anthropogenic factors shaping tidal flats, with the first three eigenfunctions accounting for over 90% of the observed variance. The first spatial eigenfunction captures the primary trend, while the subsequent two eigenfunctions reveal secondary and tertiary modes of variability. A conceptual model developed in this study elucidates the interplay between hydrodynamic forces and morphological changes, highlighting the rotation and oscillation of tidal flat profiles in response to seasonal variations in hydrological conditions. The total column water vapor (TCWV) is a relatively active component in the atmosphere and an important detection object of climate change. Exploring the spatiotemporal modes characteristics of TCWV and predicting its changing trends can provide a reference for human beings to deal with climate change and formulate corresponding countermeasures. The TCWV data over China region by using the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) dataset from 2002 to 2022 were obtained. The empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis, linear regression, Mann-Kendall (M-K) mutation test, Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model and other methods were used to discuss the spatiotemporal modes characteristics of TCWV in the China region on the monthly, seasonal, and annual scales and verify the rationality of the forecast of the monthly average trend of TCWV in the next year. The obtained results show that: (1) The annual and seasonal scales spatial distributions of TCWV in China are roughly consistent, with obvious latitudinal distribution characteristics. That is, the TCWV in the low latitude region, especially in the tropical region, is larger, and it gradually decreases with the increase of the latitude. Furthermore, the TCWV in the eastern region is higher than that in the western region at the same latitude; (2) The EOF analysis results show that its first mode can better reflect the typical distribution characteristics of the southeast-northwest positive distribution in China; (3) From 2002 to 2022, the TCWV in China shows an upward trend and the TCWV increases at a rate of 0.0413 kg/m2 per year, which may be related to the long-term increase of air temperature in recent years; (4) The inter-monthly variation of TCWV shows a slightly positive skewed 'bell-shaped' curve, with the maximum in summer, the minimum in winter and the similar distribution in spring and autumn. As can be seen from the M-K curves of the four seasons, each season has different mutation points; (5) Forecasting the TCWV was done using time series monthly average values from September 2002 to February 2022. SARIMA (3, 1, 3) × (0, 1, 1, 12) was identified as the best model. This model passed the residual normality test and the forecasting evaluation statistics show that MAPE = 2.65%, MSE = 0.3229 and the R2-score = 0.9949. One of the major concerns in the development of three-dimensional (3D) electric field sensors (EFSs) is their susceptibility to cross-axis coupling interference. The output signal for each sensing axis of a 3D EFS is often coupled by electric field components from the two other orthogonal sensing axes. In this paper, a one-dimensional (1D) electric field sensor chip (EFSC) with low cross-axis coupling interference is presented. It is designed to be symmetrical, forming a pair of in-plane symmetrically-located sensing structures. Using a difference circuit, the 1D EFSC is capable of sensing parallel electric fields along symmetrical structures and eliminating cross-axis coupling interference, which is contrast to previously reported 1D EFSCs designed for perpendicular electric field component measurement. Thus, a 3D EFS with low cross-axis coupling interference can be realized using three proposed 1D EFSCs. This 3D EFS has the advantages of low cross-axis coupling interference, small size, and high integration. The testing and calibration systems of the proposed 3D EFS were developed. High-tech companies are rapidly growing in the world. Research and development (hereafter R&D) department strength is the main asset that allows a firm to achieve a competitive advantage in high-tech businesses. The allocated budget to this sector is finite; thus, integration, human resource, risk and budget limitations should be considered to choose the most valuable project in the best portion of time. This paper investigates a case study from a high-tech company in Iran to prioritize the most attractive technologies for the R&D department. The case consists of twenty three technology options and the goal is to find the most attractive projects to sort them out for implementation in the R&D department. In this research, scholars proposed the best-worst method (henceforth BWM) to find the weight of the criteria of the attractive technologies in first step and utilize the newly developed method total area based on orthogonal vectors (henceforward TAOV) to sort the selected technologies based upon the identified criteria. Project integration is one of the least-noticed subjects in scientific papers; therefore, the researchers presented a zero or one linear programming (ZOLP) model to optimize and schedule the implementation procedure on the project risk, budget and time limitation simultaneously. The results indicate that starting few but attractive projects in the first years and postponing the rest to the future, helps a firm to manage funds and gain profit with the least amount of risk. In this paper, the performances of 12 CMIP5 (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5) models for simulating the climatology and interannual variability of the East Asian trough (EAT) are assessed using the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis data and the outputs of the CMIP5 models. The multimodel ensemble (MME) successfully reproduces the spatial pattern and spatial variations in the climatology and interannual variability of the EAT but the intensity and interannual variability of EAT are weaker than in the observations. The biases in intensity (interannual variability) are larger over the southern (northern) part of the EAT than over the northern (southern) part. The intermodel spreads are small for the EAT intensity but are large for its location in terms of both latitude and longitude. The simulated EAT in the MME is about 3° E and 1.5° S of that observed. All 12 CMIP5 models reproduce the first empirical orthogonal function (EOF) mode of EAT activity; however, its intensity and location are only successfully captured in half of the models and its linear weakening trend is simulated in ten models. The solid Earth deforms elastically in response to variations of surface atmosphere, hydrology, and ice/glacier mass loads. Continuous geodetic observations by Global Positioning System (CGPS) stations and Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) record such deformations to estimate seasonal and secular mass changes. In this paper, we present the seasonal variation of the surface mass changes and the crustal vertical deformation in the South China Block (SCB) identified by GPS and GRACE observations with records spanning from 1999 to 2016. We used 33 CGPS stations to construct a time series of coordinate changes, which are decomposed by empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) in SCB. The average weighted root-mean-square (WRMS) reduction is 38% when we subtract GRACE-modeled vertical displacements from GPS time series. The first common mode shows clear seasonal changes, indicating seasonal surface mass re-distribution in and around the South China Block. The correlation between GRACE and GPS time series is analyzed which provides a reference for further improvement of the seasonal variation of CGPS time series. The results of the GRACE observations inversion are the surface deformations caused by the surface mass change load at a rate of about -0.4 to -0.8 mm/year, which is used to improve the long-term trend of non-tectonic loads of the GPS vertical velocity field to further explain the crustal tectonic movement in the SCB and surroundings. The seasonal variability of Southern Hemisphere (SH) synoptic-scale weather systems is analysed for the 20-year timespan 1997 to 2016. The relationships between the SH jet streams and storm tracks based on lower tropospheric circulation anomalies filtered into the high-pass (periods < 4 days) and band-pass (periods between 4 and 8 days) types are examined based on 6-hourly reanalysis data. Leading Empirical Orthogonal Functions (EOFs) and storm tracks based on all (growing and decaying) disturbances are determined. As well, the structure and standard deviations of streamfunction fluctuations are determined separately in three growth rate and three decay rate bins focusing on explosive growth and decay. In all cases, and in each season, the band-pass storm tracks are more zonally symmetric than the high-pass standard deviations and this is also reflected by the EOFs. Leading EOFs in both bands are monopole wavetrains of highs and lows located in the storm tracks with some band-pass disturbances having dipole structures consistent with blocking and northwest cloud bands. EOFs based on the bin with slow-growing fluctuations are structurally similar to the standard EOFs based on all disturbances. GMRES is one of the most powerful and popular methods to solve linear systems in the Krylov subspace; we examine it from two viewpoints: to maximize the decreasing length of the residual vector, and to maintain the orthogonality of the consecutive residual vector. A stabilization factor, η , to measure the deviation from the orthogonality of the residual vector is inserted into GMRES to preserve the orthogonality automatically. The re-orthogonalized GMRES (ROGMRES) method guarantees the absolute convergence; even the orthogonality is lost gradually in the GMRES iteration. When η < 1 / 2 , the residuals' lengths of GMRES and GMRES(m) no longer decrease; hence, η < 1 / 2 can be adopted as a stopping criterion to terminate the iterations. We prove η = 1 for the ROGMRES method; it automatically keeps the orthogonality, and maintains the maximality for reducing the length of the residual vector. We improve GMRES by seeking the descent vector to minimize the residual in a larger space of the affine Krylov subspace. The resulting orthogonalized maximal projection algorithm (OMPA) is identified as having good performance. We further derive the iterative formulas by extending the GMRES method to the affine Krylov subspace; these equations are slightly different from the equations derived by Saad and Schultz (1986). Topside total electron content (TEC) data measured by COSMIC/FORMAT-3 during 2008 and 2016 were used to analyze and model the global plasmaspheric electron content (PEC) above 800 km with the help of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis method, and the potential role of the proposed PEC model in helping Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) users derive accurate slant TEC (STEC) from existing high-precision vertical TEC (VTEC) products was validated. A uniform gridded PEC dataset was first obtained using the spherical harmonic regression method, and then, it was decomposed into EOF basis modes. The first four major EOF modes contributed more than 99% of the total variance. They captured the pronounced latitudinal gradient, longitudinal differences, hemispherical differences, diurnal and seasonal variations, and the solar activity dependency of global PEC. A second-layer EOF decomposition was conducted for the spatial pattern and amplitude coefficients of the first-layer EOF modes, and an empirical PEC model was constructed by fitting the second-layer basis functions related to latitude, longitude, local time, season, and solar flux. The PEC model was designed to be driven by whether solar proxy or parameters derived from the Klobuchar model meet the real-time requirements. The validation of the results demonstrated that the proposed PEC model could accurately simulate the major spatiotemporal patterns of global PEC, with a root-mean-square (RMS) error of 1.53 and 2.24 TECU, improvements of 40.70% and 51.74% compared with NeQuick2 model in 2009 and 2014, respectively. Finally, the proposed PEC model was applied to conduct a vertical-slant TEC conversion experiment with high-precision Global Ionospheric Maps (GIMs) and dual-frequency carrier phase observables of more than 400 globally distributed GNSS sites. The results of the differential STEC (dSTEC) analysis demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed PEC model in aiding precise vertical-slant TEC conversion. China's Yellow River Basin (YRB) is sensitive to climate change due to its delicate ecosystem and complex geography. Water scarcity, soil erosion, and desertification are major challenges. To mitigate the YRB's ecological difficulties, climate change must be predicted. Based on the analysis of the evolution features of hydro-meteorological elements, the CMIP6 climate model dataset with Delta downscaling and the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) is utilized to quantitatively explore the future variations in precipitation and temperature in the YRB. The following results are drawn: The spatial resolution of the CMIP6 climate model is less than 0.5° × 0.5° (i.e., about 55 km × 55 km), which is improved to 1 km × 1 km by the downscaling of Delta and has outstanding applicability to precipitation and temperature in the YRB. The most accurate models for monthly mean temperature are CESM2-WACCM, NorESM2-LM, and ACCESS-CM2, and for precipitation are ACCESS-ESM1-5, CESM2-WACCM, and IPSL-CM6A-LR. Between 2023 and 2100, annual precipitation increases by 6.89, 5.31, 7.02, and 10.18 mm/10a under the ssp126, ssp245, ssp370, and ssp585 climate scenarios, respectively, with considerable variability in precipitation in the YRB. The annual temperature shows a significant upward trend, and the change rates under the different climate scenarios are, respectively, 0.1 °C/10a, 0.3 °C/10a, 0.5 °C/10a, and 0.7 °C/10a. The increase is positively correlated with emission intensity. Based on the EOF analysis, temperature and precipitation mainly exhibit a consistent regional trend from 2023 to 2100, with the primary modal EOF1 of precipitation for each scenario exhibiting a clear spatial distribution in the southeast–northwest. This study explores the spatiotemporal variability and determinants of rainfall patterns during the March to May (MAM) season in Rwanda, incorporating an analysis of teleconnections with oceanic–atmospheric indices over the period 1983–2021. Utilizing the Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) dataset, the study employs a set of statistical tools including standardized anomalies, empirical orthogonal functions (EOF), Pearson correlation, the Mann–Kendall (MK) trend test, and Sen's slope estimator to dissect the intricacies of rainfall variability, trends, and their association with large-scale climatic drivers. The findings reveal a distinct southwest to northwest rainfall gradient across Rwanda, with the MK test signaling a decline in annual precipitation, particularly in the southwest. The analysis for the MAM season reveals a general downtrend in rainfall, attributed in part to teleconnections with the Indian Ocean Sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Notably, the leading EOF mode for MAM rainfall demonstrates a unimodal pattern, explaining a significant 51.19% of total variance, and underscoring the pivotal role of atmospheric dynamics and moisture conveyance in shaping seasonal rainfall. The spatial correlation analysis suggests a modest linkage between MAM rainfall and the Indian Ocean Dipole, indicating that negative (positive) phases are likely to result in anomalously wet (dry) conditions in Rwanda. In East Asia, where concentrated summer precipitation often leads to climate disasters, understanding the factors that cause such extreme rainfall is crucial for effective forecasting and preparedness. The western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) is a key driver of summer precipitation variability, and therefore, its monitoring is critical to predicting the wet or dry periods during the East Asian summer monsoon. Using the Geo-KOMPSAT 2A (GK2A) satellite cloud amount data and ERA5 reanalysis data during the years 2020–2023, this study identified three leading empirical orthogonal function (EOF) modes and investigated the associated WNPSH variability at synoptic and subseasonal scales. The analysis includes a linear regression of meteorological fields onto the principal component (PC) time series. All three modes play a role in the spatiotemporal variability of the WNPSH, exhibiting lead–lag relationships. In particular, the second mode is responsible for its northwestward shift and intensification. As the WNPSH moves northwestward, the position of the monsoon rain band also shifts, and its intensity is modulated mainly by the moisture transport along the WNPSH boundary. Our results highlight the potential of high-resolution, real-time data from the GK2A satellite to elucidate WNPSH variability and its impact on the East Asian summer monsoon. By addressing the variability of the WNSPH using GK2A data, we pave the way for the development of a real-time monitoring framework with GK2A, which will improve our predictability and readiness for extreme weather events in East Asia. This study aimed to examine the spatio-temporal variations in the atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH) over the Tarim Basin (TB). Monthly ABLH data from the ERA-Interim dataset from January 1979 to December 2018 were used. Periodicity analysis and the Mann–Kendall Abrupt Changes test were employed to identify the change cycle and abrupt change year of the boundary layer height. The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) method was utilized to determine the spatial distribution of the boundary layer height, and the RF method was used to establish the relationship between the ABLH and influencing factors. The results demonstrated that the highest values of ABLH (over 1900 m) were observed in the middle parts of the study area in June, and the ABLH exhibited a significant increase over the TB throughout the study period. Abrupt changes in the ABLH were also identified in 2004, as well as in 2-, 5-, 9-, and 15-year changing cycles. The first EOF ABLH mode indicated that the middle and northeast regions are relatively high ABLH areas within the study area. Additionally, the monthly variations in ABLH show a moderately positive correlation with air temperature, while exhibiting a negative correlation with air pressure and relative humidity. Chlorophyll-a (chl-a) serves as a key indicator in water quality and harmful algal blooms (HABs) research. While satellite ocean color data have greatly advanced chl-a research and HABs monitoring, missing data caused by cloud cover and other factors limit the spatiotemporal continuity and the utility of remote sensing data products. The Data Interpolating Empirical Orthogonal Function (DINEOF) method, widely used to reconstruct missing values in remote sensing datasets, is open to improvement in terms of computational accuracy and efficiency. We propose an improved method called Concentration-Stratified DINEOF (CS-DINEOF), which uses a coordinate–value correlative data division strategy to stratify the study area into several subregions based on annual average chl-a concentration. The proposed method clusters data points with similar spatiotemporal patterns, allowing for more targeted and effective reconstruction in each sub-dataset. The feasibility and advantage of the proposed method are tested and evaluated in the experiments of chl-a data reconstruction in the water of the Bohai Sea. Compared with the ordinary DINEOF method, the CS-DINEOF method improves the reconstruction accuracy, with an average Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) reduction of 0.0281 mg/m3, and saves computational time by 228.9%. Furthermore, the gap-free images generated from CS-DINEOF are able to illustrate small variations and details of the chl-a distribution in local areas. Recently, 3D image fusion reconstruction using a FDK algorithm along three-orthogonal circular isocentric orbits has been proposed. On the other hand, we know that 3D image reconstruction based on three-orthogonal circular isocentric orbits is sufficient in the sense of Tuy data sufficiency condition. Therefore the datum obtained from three-orthogonal circular isocentric orbits can derive an exact reconstruction algorithm. Kalman filter (KF) is often based on two models, which are phase angle vector (PAV) model and orthogonal vector (OV) model, in the application of distorted grid AC signal detection. However, these two models lack rigorous and detailed derivation from the principle of dynamic modeling. This paper presents a phase angle vector dynamic (PAVD) model and an orthogonal vector dynamic (OVD) model, which are combined with Kalman filter for detecting distorted grid AC signal. They reveal that the state noise covariance of the dynamic model−based KF is related to the sampling cycle, and overcome the defect of more detecting error for conventional model−based KF. Experiment and evaluation results show that the proposed KF algorithms are reasonable and effective. The spatiotemporal mean rain rate (MR) can be characterized by the rain frequency (RF) and the conditional rain rate (CR). We computed these parameters for each season using the TMPA 3-hourly, 0.25° gridded data for the 1998–2017 period at a quasi-global scale, 50°N~50°S. For the global long-term average, MR, RF, and CR are 2.83 mm/d, 10.55%, and 25.05 mm/d, respectively. The seasonal time series of global mean RF and CR show significant decreasing and increasing trends, respectively, while MR depicts only a small but significant trend. The seasonal anomaly of RF decreased by 5.29% and CR increased 13.07 mm/d over the study period, while MR only slightly decreased by −0.029 mm/day. The spatiotemporal patterns in MR, RF, and CR suggest that although there is no prominent trend in the total precipitation amount, the frequency of rainfall events becomes smaller and the average intensity of a single event becomes stronger. Based on the co-variability of RF and CR, the paper optimally classifies the precipitation over land and ocean into four categories using K-means clustering. The terrestrial clusters are consistent with the dry and wet climatology, while categories over the ocean indicate high RF and medium CR in the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) region; low RF with low CR in oceanic dry zones; and low RF and high CR in storm track areas. Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was then performed, and these results indicated that the major pattern of MR is characterized by an El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal while RF and CR variations are dominated by their trends. Software estimation involves meeting a huge number of different requirements, such as resource allocation, cost estimation, effort estimation, time estimation, and the changing demands of software product customers. Numerous estimation models try to solve these problems. In our experiment, a clustering method of input values to mitigate the heterogeneous nature of selected projects was used. Additionally, homogeneity of the data was achieved with the fuzzification method, and we proposed two different activation functions inside a hidden layer, during the construction of artificial neural networks (ANNs). In this research, we present an experiment that uses two different architectures of ANNs, based on Taguchi's orthogonal vector plans, to satisfy the set conditions, with additional methods and criteria for validation of the proposed model, in this approach. The aim of this paper is the comparative analysis of the obtained results of mean magnitude relative error (MMRE) values. At the same time, our goal is also to find a relatively simple architecture that minimizes the error value while covering a wide range of different software projects. For this purpose, six different datasets are divided into four chosen clusters. The obtained results show that the estimation of diverse projects by dividing them into clusters can contribute to an efficient, reliable, and accurate software product assessment. The contribution of this paper is in the discovered solution that enables the execution of a small number of iterations, which reduces the execution time and achieves the minimum error. A complex fuzzy set is a set whose membership values are vectors in the unit circle in the complex plane. This paper establishes the orthogonality relation of complex fuzzy sets. Two complex fuzzy sets are said to be orthogonal if their membership vectors are perpendicular. We present the basic properties of orthogonality of complex fuzzy sets and various results on orthogonality with respect to complex fuzzy complement, complex fuzzy union, complex fuzzy intersection, and complex fuzzy inference methods. Spikes frequently occur in power quality (PQ) disturbance signals due to various causes such as switching of the inductive loads and the energization of the capacitor bank. Such signals are difficult to analyze using existing time-frequency (TF) methods as these signals have two orthogonal directions in a TF plane. To address this issue, this paper proposes an adaptive TF distribution (TFD) for the analysis of PQ signals. In the proposed adaptive method, the smoothing kernel's direction is locally adapted based on the direction of energy in the joint TF domain, and hence an improved TF resolution can be obtained. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed adaptive technique in analyzing electrical PQ is thoroughly studied for both synthetic and real world electrical power signals with the help of extensive simulations. The simulation results (specially for empirical data) indicate that the adaptive TFD method achieves high energy concentration in the TF domain for signals composed of tones and spikes. Moreover, the local adaptation of the smoothing kernel in the adaptive TFD enables the extraction of TF signature of spikes from TF images, which further helps in measuring the energy of spikes in a given signal. In a recent paper, Chang et al. have proposed studying "quantum F u n ": the q ↦ 1 limit of modal quantum theories over finite fields F q , motivated by the fact that such limit theories can be naturally interpreted in classical quantum theory. In this letter, we first make a number of rectifications of statements made in that paper. For instance, we show that quantum theory over F 1 does have a natural analogon of an inner product, and so orthogonality is a well-defined notion, contrary to what was claimed in Chang et al. Starting from that formalism, we introduce time evolution operators and observables in quantum F u n , and we determine the corresponding unitary group. Next, we obtain a typical no-cloning result in the general realm of quantum F u n . Finally, we obtain a no-deletion result as well. Remarkably, we show that we can perform quantum deletion by almost unitary operators, with a probability tending to 1. Although we develop the construction in quantum F u n , it is also valid in any other quantum theory (and thus also in classical quantum theory in complex Hilbert spaces). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global changes in drought and wetness and their future trends in arid regions have recently become a major focus of research attention. The Tarim River Basin (TRB) in Xinjiang, China, is among the most climate-sensitive regions in the world. This study uses data from the past 60 years (1962–2021) to analyze the spatial and temporal features of drought and wetness conditions in the TRB, calculating the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Trend detection for SPEI is performed using the BEAST mutation test, identification of drought events using the theory of operations, and spatial and temporal analyses of dry and wet changes using Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) decomposition. Additionally, the CMIP6 dataset is used to estimate future changes. The study results indicate the following: (1) From 1962 to 1998, the TRB exhibited a "warm and wet" trend that suddenly shifted from "wet-to-dry" in 1998 and subsequently transitioned to a pronounced "warm and dry" trend. (2) After the "wet-to-dry" shift, the frequency of drought events noticeably increased. The northern section of the basin witnessed more frequent drought events, albeit with lower severity, while the southern part had fewer occurrences but with higher severity. The spatial distribution of drought event frequency and severity is inconsistent. (3) The EOF decomposition results for SPEI-variable fields at 1-, 3-, and 6-month time scales show that the cumulative variance contribution rate of the first three principal spatial modal feature vectors exceeds 70%. The spatial distribution of the modes includes a consistent pattern across the entire basin, a north–south opposite pattern, and an east–west opposite pattern. (4) The future trend of drought in the TRB is expected to intensify, manifesting a spatial pattern characterized by dryness in the middle of the basin and wetness around the periphery. We explore to what extent data-driven prediction models have skills in forecasting daily sea-surface temperature (SST), which are comparable to or perform better than current physics-based operational systems over long-range forecast horizons. Three hybrid deep learning-based models are developed within the South China Sea (SCS) basin by integrating deep neural networks (back propagation, long short-term memory, and gated recurrent unit) with traditional empirical orthogonal function analysis and empirical mode decomposition. Utilizing a 40-year (1982–2021) satellite-based daily SST time series on a 0.25° grid, we train these models on the first 32 years (1982–2013) of detrended SST anomaly (SSTA) data. Their predictive accuracies are then validated using data from 2014 and tested over the subsequent seven years (2015–2021). The models' forecast skills are assessed using spatial anomaly correlation coefficient (ACC) and root-mean-square error (RMSE), with ACC proving to be a stricter metric. A forecast skill horizon, defined as the lead time before ACC drops below 0.6, is determined to be 50 days. The models are equally capable of achieving a basin-wide average ACC of ~0.62 and an RMSE of ~0.48 °C at this horizon, indicating a 36% improvement in RMSE over climatology. This implies that on average the forecast skill horizon for these models is beyond the available forecast length. Analysis of one model, the BP neural network, reveals a variable forecast skill horizon (5 to 50 days) for each individual day, showing that it can adapt to different time scales. This adaptability seems to be influenced by a number of mechanisms arising from the evident regional and global atmosphere–ocean coupling variations on time scales ranging from intraseasonal to decadal in the SSTA of the SCS basin.
