The material extrusion (MEX) method utilizing highly filled metal filament presents an alternative to advanced additive metal manufacturing technologies. This process enables the production of metal objects through deposition and sintering, which is particularly attractive compared to powder bed fusion (PBF) technologies employing lasers or high-power electron beams. PBF requires costly maintenance, skilled operators, and controlled process conditions, whereas MEX does not impose such requirements. This study compares research on 17-4 PH steel manufactured using two different commercially available techniques: MEX and powder bed fusion with laser beam melting (PBF-LB/M). This research included assessing the density of printed samples, analyzing surface roughness in two printing planes, examining microstructure including porosity and density determination, and measuring hardness. The conducted research aimed to determine the durability and quality of the obtained samples and to evaluate their strength. The research results indicated that samples produced using the PBF-LB/M technology exhibited better density and a more homogeneous structure. The hexagonal ferrite h-YbFeO3 grown on YSZ(111) by pulsed laser deposition is foreseen as a promising single multiferroic candidate where ferroelectricity and antiferromagnetism coexist for future applications at low temperatures. We studied in detail the microstructure as well as the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties of the devices by comparing the heterostructures grown directly on YSZ(111) (i.e., YbPt_Th0nm) with h-YbFeO3 films deposited on substrates buffered with platinum Pt/YSZ(111) and in dependence on the Pt underlayer film thickness (i.e., YbPt_Th10nm, YbPt_Th40nm, YbPt_Th55nm, and YbPt_Th70nm). The goal was to deeply understand the importance of the crystal quality and morphology of the Pt underlayer for the h-YbFeO3 layer crystal quality, surface morphology, and the resulting physical properties. We demonstrate the relevance of homogeneity, continuity, and hillock formation of the Pt layer for the h-YbFeO3 microstructure in terms of crystal structure, mosaicity, grain boundaries, and defect distribution. The findings of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction reciprocal space mapping characterization enable us to conclude that an optimum film thickness for the Pt bottom electrode is ThPt = 70 nm, which improves the crystal quality of h-YbFeO3 films grown on Pt-buffered YSZ(111) in comparison with h-YbFeO3 films grown on YSZ(111) (i.e., YbPt_Th0nm). The latter shows a disturbance in the crystal structure, in the up-and-down atomic arrangement of the ferroelectric domains, as well as in the Yb–Fe exchange interactions. Therefore, an enhancement in the remanent and in the total magnetization was obtained at low temperatures below 50 K for h-YbFeO3 films deposited on Pt-buffered substrates Pt/YSZ(111) when the Pt underlayer reached ThPt = 70 nm. The availability of new-generation femtosecond lasers capable of delivering pulses with energies in the hundreds of mJ, or even in the joules range, has called for a revision of the effect of scaling spot size on the material distribution within the plasma plume. Employing a state-of-the-art Szatmári-type hybrid dye-excimer laser system emitting 248 nm pulses with a maximum energy of 20 mJ and duration of 600 fs, copper films were grown in the classical pulsed laser deposition geometry. The exceptionally clean temporal profile of the laser pulses yielded a femtosecond component of 4.18 ± 0.19 mJ, accompanied by a 0.22 ± 0.01 mJ ASE pedestal on the target surface. While varying the spot sizes, the plasma plume consistently exhibited an extremely forward-peaked distribution. Deposition rates, defined as peak thickness per number of pulses, ranged from 0.030 to 0.114 nm/pulse, with a gradual narrowing of the thickness distribution as the spot area increased from 0.085 to 1.01 mm2 while keeping the pulse energy constant. The material distribution on the silicon substrates was characterized using the f(Θ) = AcoskΘ + (1 − A)cospΘ formalism, revealing exponents characterizing the forward-peaked component of the thickness profile of the film material along the axes, ranging from k = 15 up to exceptionally high values exceeding 50, as the spot area increased. Consequently, spot size control and outstanding beam quality ensured that majority of the ablated material was confined to the central region of the plume, indicating the potential of PLD (pulsed laser deposition) for highly efficient localized deposition of exotic materials. This paper presents the results of an extensive investigation into the durability of cold spray repairs to corrosion damage in AA7075-T7351 aluminium alloy specimens where, prior to powder deposition, the surface preparation involved grit blasting. In this context, it is shown that the growth of small naturally occurring cracks in cold spray repairs to simulated corrosion damage can be accurately computed using the Hartman–Schijve crack growth equation in a fashion that is consistent with the requirements delineated in USAF Structures Bulletin EZ-SB-19-01, MIL-STD-1530D, and the US Joint Services Structural Guidelines JSSG2006. The relatively large variation in the da/dN versus ΔK curves associated with low values of da/dN highlights the fact that, before any durability assessment of a cold spray repair to an operational airframe is attempted, it is first necessary to perform a sufficient number of tests so that the worst-case small crack growth curve needed to perform the mandated airworthiness certification analysis can be determined. The experimental and numerical simulation analysis of a TiAl alloy by laser metal deposition technology is presented in this paper. The research examines the macroscopic morphology, microstructure, and mechanical properties of samples as laser power varies. It also delves into how the temperature field and residual stress evolve under different laser powers. The results reveal that the microstructure of samples is mainly composed of α2-Ti3Al phase and a γ-TiAl phase and that the details of the microstructure are significantly affected by laser power. As laser power increases, coarse lamellar structure content increases, corresponding to a decrease in α2 phase content. The deposited layer hardness ranges from 550 HV to 600 HV, and the average deposition layer hardness decreases with increased laser power. Simulation results predict the molten pool's size, temperature, and residual stresses. A significant increase in the molten pool size is observed when the laser power exceeds 1000 W, and the measured molten pool depths correspond closely to simulation predictions. However, significant tensile stresses are generated in the deposition layer due to high cooling rates, mainly in the x direction. A modified 3D re-entrant honeycomb is designed and fabricated utilizing Laser Cladding Deposition (LCD) technology, the mechanical properties of which are systematically investigated by experimental and finite element (FE) methods. Firstly, the influences of honeycomb angle on localized deformation and the response of force are studied by an experiment. Experimental results reveal that the honeycomb angles have a significant effect on deformation and force. Secondly, a series of numerical studies are conducted to analyze stress characteristics and energy absorption under different angles (α) and velocities (v). It is evident that two variables play an important role in stress and energy. Thirdly, response surface methodology (RSM) and the Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II) are implemented with high precision to solve multi-objective optimization. Finally, the final compromise solution is determined based on the fitness function, with an angle of 49.23° and an impact velocity of 16.40 m/s. Through simulation verification, the errors of energy absorption (EA) and peak crush stress (PCS) are 9.26% and 0.4%, respectively. The findings of this study offer valuable design guidance for selecting the optimal design parameters under the same mass conditions to effectively enhance the performance of the honeycomb. The additive manufacturing (AM) of functional copper (Cu) parts is a major goal for many industries, from aerospace to automotive to electronics, because Cu has a high thermal and electrical conductivity as well as being ~10× cheaper than silver. Previous studies on AM of Cu have concentrated mainly on high-energy manufacturing processes such as Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Electron Beam Melting, and Binder Jetting. These processes all require high-temperature heat treatment in an oxygen-free environment. This paper shows an AM route to multi-layered microparts from novel nanoparticle (NP) Cu feedstocks, performed in an air environment, employing a low-power (<10 W) laser sintering process. Cu NP ink was deposited using two mechanisms, inkjet printing, and bar coating, followed by low-power laser exposure to induce particle consolidation. Initial parts were manufactured to a height of approximately 100 µm, which was achieved by multi-layer printing of 15 (bar-coated) to 300 (inkjetted) layers. There was no evidence of oxidised copper in the sintered material, but they were found to be low-density, porous structures. Nonetheless, electrical resistivity of ~28 × 10−8 Ω m was achieved. Overall, the aim of this study is to offer foundational knowledge for upscaling the process to additively manufacture Cu 3D parts of significant size via sequential nanometal ink deposition and low-power laser processing. Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is a simple and extremely versatile technique to grow thin films and nanomaterials from a wide variety of materials. Compared to traditional fabrication methods, PLD is a clean physical vapour deposition approach that avoids complicated chemical reactions and by-products, achieving a precise stochiometric transfer of the target material onto the substrate and providing control over the film thickness. Halide perovskite materials have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent photoelectric and photovoltaic properties. In this paper, we present an overview of the fundamental and practical aspects of PLD. The properties and preparation methods of the halide perovskite materials are briefly discussed. Finally, we will elaborate on recent research on the preparation of perovskite solar cells by PLD, summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the PLD preparation, and prospect the all-vacuum PLD-grown solar cells in a full solar cell structure. The titanium alloy components utilized in the aviation field are typically large in size and possess complex structures. By utilizing multiple additive manufacturing processes, the precision and efficiency requirements of production can be met. We investigated the hybrid additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V using a combination of cold metal transfer additive manufacturing (CMTAM) and laser metal deposition (LMD), as well as the feasibility of using the CMT-LMD hybrid additive manufacturing process for fabricating Ti-6Al-4V components. Microstructural examinations, tensile testing coupled with digital image correlation and dynamic compressive experiments (by the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) system) were employed to assess the parts. The results indicate that the interface of the LMD and CMTAM zone formed a compact metallurgical bonding. In the CMTAM and LMD zone, the prior-β grains exhibit epitaxial growth, forming columnar prior-β grains. Due to laser remelting, the CMT-LMD hybrid additive zone experiences grain refinement, resulting in equiaxed prior-β grains at the interface with an average grain size smaller than that of the CMTAM and LMD regions. The microstructures reveal significant differences in grain orientation and morphology among the zones, with distinct textures forming in each zone. In the CMT-LMD hybrid zone, due to interfacial strengthening, strain concentration occurs in the arc additive zone during tensile testing, leading to fracture on the CMTAM zone. Under high-strain-rate dynamic impact conditions, the LMD region exhibits ductile fracture, while the CMTAM zone demonstrates brittle fracture. The hybrid zone combines ductile and brittle fracture modes, and the CMT-LMD hybrid material exhibits superior dynamic impact performance compared to the single deposition zone. The morphology and crystal structure of Pt films grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)at high temperatures Tg = 900 °C was studied for four different film thicknesses varying between 10 and 70 nm. During the subsequent growth of the capping layer, the thermal stability of the Pt was strongly influenced by the Pt film's thickness. Furthermore, these later affected the film morphology, the crystal structure and hillocks size, and distribution during subsequent growth at Tg = 900 °C for a long duration. The modifications in the morphology as well as in the structure of the Pt film without a capping layer, named also as the as-grown and encapsulated layers in the bilayer system, were examined by a combination of microscopic and scattering methods. The increase in the thickness of the deposited Pt film brought three competitive phenomena into occurrence, such as 3D–2D morphological transition, dewetting, and hillock formation. The degree of coverage, film continuity, and the crystal quality of the Pt film were significantly improved by increasing the deposition time. An optimum Pt film thickness of 70 nm was found to be suitable for obtaining a hillock-free Pt bottom electrode which also withstood the dewetting phenomena revealed during the subsequent growth of capping layers. The structure and the chemical composition of individual layers as well as of interfaces belonging to the two heterostructures M1 (BaFe12O19/YbFeO3/YSZ) and M2 (YbFeO3/BaFe12O19/YSZ) grown by pulsed laser deposition on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates are deeply characterized by using a combination of methods such as high-resolution X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic-resolution scanning TEM with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent magnetic properties demonstrate two distinct heterostructures with different coercivity, anisotropy fields, and first anisotropy constants, which are related to the defect concentrations within the individual layers and to the degree of intermixing at the interface. The heterostructure with the stacking order BaFe12O19/YbFeO3, i.e., M1, exhibits a distinctive interface without any chemical intermixture, while an Fe-rich crystalline phase is observed in M2 both in atomic-resolution EDX maps and in mass density profiles. Additionally, M1 shows high c-axis orientation, which induces a higher anisotropy constant K1 as well as a larger coercivity due to a high number of phase boundaries. Despite the existence of a canted antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic combination (T < 140 K), both heterostructures M1 and M2 do not reveal any detectable exchange bias at T = 50 K. Additionally, compressive residual strain on the BaM layer is found to be suppressing the ferromagnetism, thus reducing the Curie temperature (Tc) in the case of M1. Amorphous alloys or metallic glasses (MGs) thin films have attracted extensive attention in various fields due to their unique functional properties. Here, we use in situ heating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate the thermal stability and crystallization behavior of Pd-Au-Si thin films prepared by a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Upon heating treatment inside a TEM, we trace the structural changes in the Pd-Au-Si thin films through directly recording high-resolution images and diffraction patterns at different temperatures. TEM observations reveal that the Pd-Au-Si thin films started to nucleate with small crystalline embryos uniformly distributed in the glassy matrix upon approaching the glass transition temperature T g = 625 K , and subsequently, the growth of crystalline nuclei into sub-10 nm Pd-Si nanocrystals commenced. Upon further increasing the temperature to 673 K , the thin films transformed to micro-sized patches of stacking-faulty lamellae that further crystallized into Pd 9 Si 2 and Pd 3 Si intermetallic compounds. Interestingly, with prolonged thermal heating at elevated temperatures, the Pd 9 Si 2 transformed to Pd 3 Si . Simultaneously, the solute Au atoms initially dissolved in glassy alloys and eventually precipitated out of the Pd 9 Si 2 and Pd 3 Si intermetallics, forming nearly spherical Au nanocrystals. Our TEM results reveal the unique thermal stability and crystallization processes of the PLD-prepared Pd-Au-Si thin films as well as demonstrate a possibility of producing a large quantity of pure nanocrystals out of amorphous solids for various applications. Kesterite-based copper zinc tin sulfide (CZTS) and copper zinc tin selenide (CZTSe) thin films have attracted considerable attention as promising materials for sustainable and cost-effective thin-film solar cells. However, the successful integration of these materials into photovoltaic devices is hindered by the coexistence of secondary phases, which can significantly affect device performance and stability. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress and challenges in controlling secondary phases in kesterite CZTS and CZTSe thin films. Drawing from relevant studies, we discuss state-of-the-art strategies and techniques employed to mitigate the formation of secondary phases. These include a range of deposition methods, such as electrodeposition, sol-gel, spray pyrolysis, evaporation, pulsed laser deposition, and sputtering, each presenting distinct benefits in enhancing phase purity. This study highlights the importance of employing various characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, for the precise identification of secondary phases in CZTS and CZTSe thin films. Furthermore, the review discusses innovative strategies and techniques aimed at mitigating the occurrence of secondary phases, including process optimization, compositional tuning, and post-deposition treatments. These approaches offer promising avenues for enhancing the purity and performance of kesterite-based thin-film solar cells. Challenges and open questions in this field are addressed, and potential future research directions are proposed. By comprehensively analyzing recent advancements, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of secondary phase-related issues in kesterite CZT(S/Se) thin films, paving the way for enhanced performance and commercial viability of thin-film solar cell technologies. Laser deposition manufacturing (LDM) has drawn unprecedented attention for its advantages in manufacturing large-scale and complex metal components. During the process of LDM, a large thermal gradient is generated due to thermal cycling and heat accumulation. As a result, large residual stress and deformation are formed in the LDM metal components. Then, the dimensional accuracy of the metal components becomes poor. To achieve deformation control and increase dimensional accuracy, the deformation prediction of metal components is very meaningful and directional. However, the traditional thermoelastic–plastic method can only achieve deformation prediction for small-scale LDM metal components. Because of the low computational efficiency, it is extremely difficult to meet deformation prediction demand for large-scale metal components. Based on feature partitioning and the inherent strain method, a rapid deformation prediction method is proposed for large-scale metal components in this manuscript. Firstly, to solve the problem of poor consistency of formation quality due to the randomness of the partition process, the partitioning process was established according to typical geometric features. Secondly, the inherent strain values for different partitions were obtained by considering the effects of the extraction method, mesh size, equivalent value layer, and partition size on the inherent strain values. Then, using the inherent strain method, the deformation of large-scale components was predicted rapidly. Comparing the simulation results with the experimental results, the following conclusions were obtained. The deformation predicted by the method proposed in this manuscript is consistent with the deformations predicted using the traditional thermoelastic–plastic method and the experimental method. Significantly, applying the method proposed in this manuscript to predict the deformation of LDM metal components, computational efficiency is improved by 27.25 times compared with results using the conventional thermoelastic–plastic method. The structure, composition and corrosion properties of thin films synthesized using the Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) technique starting from a three high entropy alloy (HEA) AlCoCrFeNix produced by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) method were investigated. The depositions were performed at room temperature on Si and mirror-like polished Ti substrates either under residual vacuum (low 10−7 mbar, films denoted HEA2, HEA6, and HEA10, which were grown from targets with Ni concentration molar ratio, x, equal to 0.4, 1.2, and 2.0, respectively) or under N2 (10−4 mbar, films denoted HEN2, HEN6, and HEN10 for the same Ni concentration molar ratios). The deposited films' structures, investigated using Grazing Incidence X-ray Diffraction, showed the presence of face-centered cubic and body-centered cubic phases, while their surface morphology, investigated using scanning electron microscopy, exhibited a smooth surface with micrometer size droplets. The mass density and thickness were obtained from simulations of acquired X-ray reflectivity curves. The films' elemental composition, estimated using the energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy, was quite close to that of the targets used. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy investigation showed that films deposited under a N2 atmosphere contained several percentages of N atoms in metallic nitride compounds. The electrochemical behavior of films under simulated body fluid (SBF) conditions was investigated by Open Circuit Potential (OCP) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy measurements. The measured OCP values increased over time, implying that a passive layer was formed on the surface of the films. It was observed that all films started to passivate in SBF solution, with the HEN6 film exhibiting the highest increase. The highest repassivation potential was exhibited by the same film, implying that it had the highest stability range of all analyzed films. Impedance measurements indicated high corrosion resistance values for HEA2, HEA6, and HEN6 samples. Much lower resistances were found for HEN10 and HEN2. Overall, HEN6 films exhibited the best corrosion behavior among the investigated films. UV sensors hold significant promise for various applications in both military and civilian domains. However, achieving exceptional detectivity, responsivity, and rapid rise/decay times remains a notable challenge. In this study, we address this challenge by investigating the photodetection properties of CdS thin films and the influence of surface-deposited gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on their performance. CdS thin films were produced using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on glass substrates, with CdS layers at a 100, 150, and 200 nm thickness. Extensive characterization was performed to evaluate the thin films' structural, morphological, and optical properties. Photodetector devices based on CdS and AuNPs/CdS films were fabricated, and their performance parameters were evaluated under 365 nm light illumination. Our findings demonstrated that reducing CdS layer thickness enhanced performance concerning detectivity, responsivity, external quantum efficiency (EQE), and photocurrent gain. Furthermore, AuNP deposition on the surface of CdS films exhibited a substantial influence, especially on devices with thinner CdS layers. Among the configurations, AuNPs/CdS(100 nm) demonstrated the highest values in all evaluated parameters, including detectivity ( 1.1 × 10 12 Jones), responsivity (13.86 A/W), EQE (47.2%), and photocurrent gain (9.2). Diamond-like carbon (DLC) layers are known for their high corrosion and wear resistance, low friction, and high biocompatibility. However, it is often necessary to dope DLC layers with additional chemical elements to strengthen their adhesion to the substrate. Ti-DLC layers (doped with 0.4, 2.1, 3.7, 6.6, and 12.8 at.% of Ti) were prepared by dual pulsed laser deposition, and pure DLC, glass, and polystyrene (PS) were used as controls. In vitro cell–material interactions were investigated with an emphasis on cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation. We observed slightly increasing roughness and contact angle and decreasing surface free energy on Ti-DLC layers with increasing Ti content. Three-week biological experiments were performed using adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (bmMSCs) in vitro. The cell proliferation activity was similar or slightly higher on the Ti-doped materials than on glass and PS. Osteogenic cell differentiation on all materials was proved by collagen and osteocalcin production, ALP activity, and Ca deposition. The bmMSCs exhibited greater initial proliferation potential and an earlier onset of osteogenic differentiation than the ADSCs. Coaxial wire-based laser metal deposition is a versatile and efficient additive process that can achieve a high deposition rate in the manufacturing of complex structures. In this paper, a three-beam coaxial wire system is studied, with particular attention to the effects of deposition height and laser defocusing on the resulting bead geometry. As the deposition standoff distance changes, so does the workpiece illumination proportion, which describes the ratio of energy going directly into the feedstock wire and into the substrate. Single titanium beads are deposited at varying defocus levels and deposition rates and the bead aspect ratio is measured and analyzed. Over the experimental settings, the defocusing level and deposition rate were found to have a significant effect on the resulting bead aspect ratio. As the defocusing level is increased away from the beam convergence plane, the spot size increases and the deposited track is wider and flatter. Process parameters can be used to tune the deposited material to a desired aspect ratio. In coaxial wire deposition, defocusing provides an adjustment mechanism to the distribution of heat between the wire and substrate and has an important impact on the resulting deposit. This study investigates the morphological changes induced by femtosecond (fs) laser pulses in arsenic trisulfide (As2S3) thin films and gold–arsenic trisulfide (Au\As2S3) heterostructures, grown by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). By means of a direct laser writing experimental setup, the films were systematically irradiated at various laser power and irradiation times to observe their effects on surface modifications. AFM was employed for morphological and topological characterization. Our results reveal a clear transition threshold between photoexpansion and photoevaporation phenomena under different femtosecond laser power regimes, occurring between 1 and 1.5 mW, irrespective of exposure time. Notably, the presence of a gold layer in the heterostructure minimally influenced this threshold. A maximum photoexpansion of 5.2% was obtained in As2S3 films, while the Au\As2S3 heterostructure exhibited a peak photoexpansion of 0.8%. Cylindrical Inconel 718 specimens were fabricated via a blown-powder, laser-directed energy deposition (DED-L) additive manufacturing (AM) process equipped with a dual thermal monitoring system to learn key process–structure relationships. Thermographic inspection of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and melt pool was performed with different layer-to-layer time intervals of ~0 s, 5 s, and 10 s, using an infrared camera and dual-wavelength pyrometer, respectively. Maximum melt pool temperatures were found to increase with layer number within a substrate affected zone (SAZ), and then asymptotically decrease. As the layer-to-layer time interval increased the HAZ temperature responses became more repetitive, indicating a desirable approach for achieving a more homogeneous microstructure along the height of a part. Microstructural variations in grain size and the coexistence of specific precipitate phases and Laves phases persisted among the investigated samples despite the employed standard heat treatment. This indicates that the effectiveness of any post DED-L heat treatment depends significantly on the initial, as-printed microstructure. Overall, this study demonstrates the importance of part size, part number per build, and time intervals on DED-L process parameter selection and post-process heat treatments for achieving better quality control. Thin film technology shows great promise in fabricating electronic devices such as gas sensors. Here, we report the fabrication of surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors based on thin films of (1 − x) Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3−x(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (BCTZ50, x = 50) and Polyethylenimine (PEI). The layers were deposited by two laser-based techniques, namely pulsed laser deposition (PLD) for the lead-free material and matrix assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) for the sensitive polymer. In order to assay the impact of the thickness, the number of laser pulses was varied, leading to thicknesses between 50 and 350 nm. The influence of BCTZ film's crystallographic features on the characteristics and performance of the SAW device was studied by employing substrates with different crystal structures, more precisely cubic Strontium Titanate (SrTiO3) and orthorhombic Gadolinium Scandium Oxide (GdScO3). The SAW sensors were further integrated into a testing system to evaluate the response of the BCTZ thin films with PEI, and then subjected to tests for N2, CO2 and O2 gases. The influence of the MAPLE's deposited PEI layer on the overall performance was demonstrated. For the SAW sensors based on BCTZ/GdScO3 thin films with a PEI polymer, a maximum frequency shift of 39.5 kHz has been obtained for CO2; eight times higher compared to the sensor without the polymeric layer. In a previous study, we successfully coated hydroxyapatite (HAp) onto titanium (Ti) plates using the erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet pulsed-laser deposition (Er:YAG-PLD) method. In this study, we performed further experiments to validate the in vitro osteogenic properties, macrophage polarization, and in vivo osseointegration activity of HAp-coated Ti (HAp-Ti) plates and screws. Briefly, we coated a HAp film onto the surfaces of Ti plates and screws via Er:YAG-PLD. The surface morphological, elemental, and crystallographic analyses confirmed the successful surface coating. The macrophage polarization and osteogenic induction were evaluated in macrophages and rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and the in vivo osteogenic properties were studied. The results showed that needle-shaped nano-HAp promoted the early expression of osteogenic and immunogenic genes in the macrophages and induced excellent M2 polarization properties. The calcium deposition and osteocalcin production were significantly higher in the HAp-Ti than in the uncoated Ti. The implantation into rat femurs revealed that the HAp-coated materials had superior osteoinductive and osseointegration activities compared with the Ti, as assessed by microcomputed tomography and histology. Thus, HAp film on sandblasted Ti plates and screws via Er:YAG-PLD enhances hard-tissue differentiation, macrophage polarization, and new bone formation in tissues surrounding implants both in vitro and in vivo. A highly sensitive ammonia-gas sensor based on a tungsten trioxide and polypyrrole (WO3/PPy) nanocomposite synthesized using pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) and matrix-assisted pulsed-laser evaporation (MAPLE) is presented in this study. The WO3/PPy nanocomposite is prepared through a layer-by-layer alternate deposition of the PPy thin layer on the WO3 mesoporous layer. Extensive characterization using X-ray diffraction, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and water contact angle are carried out on the as-prepared layers. The gas-sensing properties of the WO3/PPy nanocomposite layers are systematically investigated upon exposure to ammonia gas. The results demonstrate that the WO3/PPy nanocomposite sensor exhibits a lower detection limit, higher response, faster response/recovery time, and exceptional repeatability compared to the pure PPy and WO3 counterparts. The significant improvement in gas-sensing properties observed in the WO3/PPy nanocomposite layer can be attributed to the distinctive interactions occurring at the p–n heterojunction established between the n-type WO3 and p-type PPy. Additionally, the enhanced surface area of the WO3/PPy nanocomposite, achieved through the PLD and MAPLE synthesis techniques, contributes to its exceptional gas-sensing performance. The shortage of 3 He, a crucial element widely used as a neutron converter in neutron detection applications, has sparked significant research efforts aimed at finding alternative materials, developing appropriate deposition methods, and exploring new detector architectures. This issue has required the exploration of novel approaches to address the challenges faced in neutron detection. Among the available conversion materials, 10 B has emerged as one of the most promising choices due to its high neutron-capture cross-section and relatively high Q value. In our previous papers, we delved into the possibility of depositing neutron conversion layers based on 10 B using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). We investigated and evaluated the performance of these layers based on various factors, including deposition conditions, substrate properties, and film thickness. Moreover, we successfully developed and tested a device that employed a single conversion layer coupled with a silicon particle detector. In this current study, we present the development of a new device that showcases improved performance in terms of efficiency, sensitivity, and discrimination against γ background signals. The background signals can arise from the environment or be associated with the neutron field. To achieve these advancements, we considered a new detection geometry that incorporates the simultaneous use of two 10 B conversion layers, each with a thickness of 1.5 μ m, along with two solid-state silicon detectors. The primary objective of this design was to enhance the overall detection efficiency when compared to the single-layer geometry. By employing this novel setup, our results demonstrate a significant enhancement in the device's performance when exposed to a neutron flux from an Am-Be neutron source, emitting a flux of approximately 2.2 × 10 6 neutrons per second. Titanium thin films are particularly important as electrode layers, barrier layers, or intermediate buffer layers in the semiconductor industry. In order to improve the quality of Ti thin films and the adhesion and diffraction abilities of irregular parts, this paper used high-power pulsed magnetron sputtering (HPPMS/HiPIMS) to prepare titanium thin films. The effects of different trigger voltages (700 V, 800 V, and 900 V) on plasma properties were studied, and the microstructure, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the films were also studied. The results showed that as the voltage increased, the grain size of the thin films gradually increased. The residual stress of the titanium films changed from compressive stress (−333 MPa) to tensile stress (55 MPa) and then to low compressive stress (−178 MPa). The hardness values were 13 GPa, 9.45 GPa and 6.62 GPa, respectively. The wear resistance of the films gradually decreased, while the toughness gradually increased. The oxidation of β-NiAl at high temperatures leads to the preferential formation of metastable alumina, such as θ-Al2O3, which exhibits a significantly faster growth rate compared to stable α-Al2O3. However, our recent research has shown that through the use of the surface-dispersing nanoparticles (NPs) of metal oxides with a hexagonal closed pack (hcp), such as α-Al2O3, the thermal growth of α-Al2O3 can be facilitated. The present study employed laser additive manufacturing (LAM) to develop an integrated α-Al2O3 NPs surface-seeded two-phase intermetallic alloy comprising brittle β-NiAl and tougher γ'-Ni3Al, which demonstrated better comprehensive mechanical properties. It was found that seeding the α-Al2O3 NPs promoted the early stage growth of α-Al2O3 on both β and γ' phases during oxidation in air at 1000 °C. This led to a decrease in the oxidation rate but an enhancement in adhesion of the formed alumina scale in comparison to the naked β/γ' two-phase alloy. The reasons for this result were interpreted. BiFeO3/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (BFO/LSMO) epitaxial heterostructures were successfully synthesized by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 single-crystal substrates with Au top electrodes. Stable bipolar resistive switching characteristics regulated by ferroelectric polarization reversal was observed in the Au/BFO/LSMO heterostructures. The conduction mechanism was revealed to follow the Schottky emission model, and the Schottky barriers in high-resistance and low-resistance states were estimated based on temperature-dependent current–voltage curves. Further, the observed memristive behavior was interpreted via the modulation effect on the depletion region width and the Schottky barrier height caused by ferroelectric polarization reversal, combining with the oxygen vacancies migration near the BFO/LSMO interface. In this paper, we present the preparation of few-layer MoS2 films on single-crystal sapphire, as well as on heteroepitaxial GaN templates on sapphire substrates, using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Detailed structural and chemical characterization of the films were performed using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction measurements, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. According to X-ray diffraction studies, the films exhibit epitaxial growth, indicating a good in-plane alignment. Furthermore, the films demonstrate uniform thickness on large areas, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The lateral electrical current transport of the MoS2 grown on sapphire was investigated by temperature (T)-dependent sheet resistance and Hall effect measurements, showing a high n-type doping of the semiconducting films (ns from ~1 × 1013 to ~3.4 × 1013 cm−2 from T = 300 K to 500 K), with a donor ionization energy of Ei = 93 ± 8 meV and a mobility decreasing with T. Finally, the vertical current injection across the MoS2/GaN heterojunction was investigated by means of conductive atomic force microscopy, showing the rectifying behavior of the I-V characteristics with a Schottky barrier height of ϕB ≈ 0.36 eV. As the energy demand is expected to double over the next 30 years, there has been a major initiative towards advancing the technology of both energy harvesting and storage for renewable energy. In this work, we explore a subset class of dielectrics for energy storage since ferroelectrics offer a unique combination of characteristics needed for energy storage devices. We investigate ferroelectric lead-free 0.5[Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3]-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 epitaxial thin films with different crystallographic orientations grown by pulsed laser deposition. We focus our attention on the influence of the crystallographic orientation on the microstructure, ferroelectric, and dielectric properties. Our results indicate an enhancement of the polarization and strong anisotropy in the dielectric response for the (001)-oriented film. The enhanced ferroelectric, energy storage, and dielectric properties of the (001)-oriented film is explained by the coexistence of orthorhombic-tetragonal phase, where the disordered local structure is in its free energy minimum. In this study, we present a physical method for the fabrication of oriented nanowires composed of mixed metal oxides. Pulsed laser deposition carried out in the air under atmospheric pressure was used for the production of samples. Two sets of experiments were performed by applying nanosecond and picosecond laser ablation, respectively. The depositions were performed using the laser ablation of mixed targets from iron oxide and zinc oxide as the initial materials in different ratios. The experiments were carried out in a magnetic field, which allowed us to control the morphology of nanostructures. The structure, microstructure, morphology, and composition of the structures obtained were studied in relation to the sample composition and laser ablation regime applied. The morphological analysis revealed that the structure of the samples consisted mainly of nanowire-like features reaching tens of micrometers in length. These nanowires were composed of nanoparticles and oriented predominantly in parallel to magnetic field lines. Nanoparticles produced using ps ablation were, on average, smaller than those obtained by ns ablation of the same target. In this work, we present the fabrication of thin films/nanostructures of metals and metal oxides using picosecond laser ablation. Two sets of experiments were performed: the depositions were carried out in vacuum and in air at atmospheric pressure. The subjects of investigation were the noble metals Au and Pt and the metal oxides ZnO and TiO2. We studied and compared the phase composition, microstructure, morphology, and physicochemical state of the as-deposited samples' surfaces in vacuum and in air. It was found that picosecond laser ablation performed in vacuum led to the fabrication of thin films with embedded and differently sized nanoparticles. The implementation of the same process in air at atmospheric pressure resulted in the fabrication of porous nanostructures composed of nanoparticles. The ablation of pure Pt metal in air led to the production of nanoparticles with an oxide shell. In addition, more defects were formed on the metal oxide surface when the samples were deposited in vacuum. Substrate-induced strains can significantly influence the structural properties of epitaxial thin films. In ferroelectrics, this might lead to significant changes in the functional properties due to the strong electromechanical coupling in those materials. To study this in more detail, epitaxial Ba 0.7 Sr 0.3 TiO 3 films, which have a perovskite structure and a structural phase transition close to room temperature, were grown with different thicknesses on REScO 3 (RE–rare earth element) substrates having a smaller lattice mismatch compared to SrTiO 3 . A fully strained SrRuO 3 bottom electrode and Pt top contacts were used to achieve a capacitor-like architecture. Different X-ray diffraction techniques were applied to study the microstructure of the films. Epitaxial films with a higher crystalline quality were obtained on scandates in comparison to SrTiO 3 , whereas the strain state of the functional layer was strongly dependent on the chosen substrate and the thickness. Differences in permittivity and a non-linear polarization behavior were observed at higher temperatures, suggesting that ferroelectricity is supressed under tensile strain conditions in contrast to compressive strain for our measurement configuration, while a similar reentrant relaxor-like behavior was found in all studied layers below 0 ° C . Additive manufacturing techniques are being used more and more to perform the precise fabrication of engineering components with complex geometries. The heterogeneity of additively manufactured microstructures deteriorates the mechanical integrity of products. In this paper, we printed AISI 316L stainless steel using the additive manufacturing technique of laser metal deposition. Both single-phase and dual-phase substructures were formed in the grain interiors. Electron backscatter diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy indicate that Si, Mo, S, Cr were enriched, while Fe was depleted along the substructure boundaries. In situ micro-compression testing was performed at room temperature along the [001] orientation. The dual-phase substructures exhibited lower yield strength and higher Young's modulus compared with single-phase substructures. Our research provides a fundamental understanding of the relationship between the microstructure and mechanical properties of additively manufactured metallic materials. The long, straight grain boundary of the high-entropy alloy (HEA) produced via laser melting deposition (LMD) is prone to cracking due to unidirectional scanning (single wall). To enhance the competitive growth of columnar grains and improve the overall performance of the alloy, a vertical cross scanning method was employed to fabricate FeCoCrNi HEA (bulk). The influence of grain orientation on the microstructure and mechanical properties of FeCoCrNi-LMD was systematically investigated. Microhardness tests and tensile tests were conducted to assess the mechanical property differences between the single-wall and bulk samples. This study shows that using a single scanning strategy results in monolayer wall grains sized at 129.40 μm, with a max texture strength of 21.29. Employing orthogonal scanning yields 61.15 μm block-like grains with a max texture strength of 11.12. Dislocation densities are 1.084 × 1012 m−2 and 1.156 × 1012 m−2, with average Schmid factors of 0.471 and 0.416. In comparison to the FeCoCrNi-LMD single wall, the bulk material produced through cross-layer orthogonal scanning exhibited reduced residual stress, weakened anisotropy, and improved mechanical properties. Three-layer structures based on various multi-component films of III–V semiconductors heavily doped with Fe were grown using the pulsed laser sputtering of InSb, GaSb, InAs, GaAs and Fe solid targets. The structures comprising these InAsSb:Fe, InGaSb:Fe and InSb:Fe layers with Fe concentrations up to 24 at. % and separated by GaAs spacers were deposited on (001) i-GaAs substrates at 200 °C. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the structures have a rather high crystalline quality and do not contain secondary-phase inclusions. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations revealed a significant diffusion of Ga atoms from the GaAs regions into the InAsSb:Fe layers, which has led to the formation of an InGaAsSb:Fe compound with a Ga content up to 20 at. %. It has been found that the ferromagnetic properties of the InAsSb:Fe magnetic semiconductor improve with an increasing Sb:As ratio. The stability and repeatability of laser metal deposition is particularly important when processing multiple layers or depositing material on complex component surfaces, and requires the use of process parameter control including the stand-off distance between the laser head and the substrate. The system proposed in this paper for correcting the stand-off parameter is based on a chromatic confocal sensor integrated into a laser head. Then, the spectral signal acquired from the measurement system is processed by using the developed application to compensate for the movement of an additional axis of the kinematic system. This study used an independent verification system based on the digital image correlation method. The validation tests were carried out using the system for correcting the stand-off parameter with different control algorithms and given motion trajectories and substrate materials. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is one of the strongly correlated materials exhibiting a reversible insulator–metal phase transition accompanied by a structural transition from a low-temperature monoclinic phase to high-temperature rutile phase near room temperature. Due to the dramatic change in electrical resistance and optical transmittance of VO2, it has attracted considerable attention towards the electronic and optical device applications, such as switching devices, memory devices, memristors, smart windows, sensors, actuators, etc. The present review provides an overview of several methods for the synthesis of nanostructured VO2, such as solution-based chemical approaches (sol-gel process and hydrothermal synthesis) and gas or vapor phase synthesis techniques (pulsed laser deposition, sputtering method, and chemical vapor deposition). This review also presents stoichiometry, strain, and doping engineering as modulation strategies of physical properties for nanostructured VO2. In particular, this review describes ultraviolet-visible-near infrared photodetectors, optical switches, and color modulators as optical sensing applications associated with nanostructured VO2 materials. Bi2Sr2Co2Oy thin films were grown on 10° vicinal-cut Al2O3 (0001) single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser-deposition techniques with in situ annealing, post-annealing and non-annealing process, respectively. The pure phase Bi2Sr2Co2Oy thin film was obtained with a non-annealing process. The result of X-ray diffraction showed that Bi2Sr2Co2Oy thin film was obviously c-axis preferred orientation. The laser-induced thermoelectric voltage signals were detected in Bi2Sr2Co2Oy thin films, which originated from the anisotropy of the Seebeck coefficient. The maximum peak value of laser-induced thermoelectric voltage was strong and could reach as large as 0.44 V and the response time was 1.07 μs when the deposition time was 6 min. Furthermore, the peak voltage enhanced linearly with the single-pulse laser energy. Laser additively manufactured (LAM) Ti-6Al-4V alloy has huge application potential in aerospace structural parts such as turbine blades. However, there are few studies on the fatigue properties of such LAM parts under vibration loading, particularly with regard to anisotropy. In this paper, vibration fatigue properties of LAM Ti-6Al-4V by laser melted deposition were investigated along the transversely deposited (TD) and parallelly deposited (PD) directions. Through the first-order bending vibration experiments, the LAM Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibits obvious anisotropic fatigue properties and significant dispersion in fracture position. The fracture morphology analysis reveals that the vibration fatigue failure was mainly dominated by process-induced defects and microstructure. The fatigue strength at 106 cycles of the samples with defect-free failure features (DFF) at initiation sites is 470.9 MPa in PD and 434.2 Mpa in TD, while that of the samples with defect-related failure features (DRF) at initiation sites is 364.2 Mpa in PD and 381.0 Mpa in TD. For the DFF group, the fatigue behavior is controlled by the prior β columnar grains with preferential orientation, which leads to enhanced fatigue crack propagation resistance for the PD samples. For the DRF group, which has lower fatigue lives, the fatigue anisotropy strongly depends on the projection area of the lack-of-fusion defects relative to the loading direction, resulting in better fatigue performance for the TD samples. Neuromorphic computing, reconfigurable optical metamaterials that are operational over a wide spectral range, holographic and nonvolatile displays of extremely high resolution, integrated smart photonics, and many other applications need next-generation phase-change materials (PCMs) with better energy efficiency and wider temperature and spectral ranges to increase reliability compared to current flagship PCMs, such as Ge2Sb2Te5 or doped Sb2Te. Gallium tellurides are favorable compounds to achieve the necessary requirements because of their higher melting and crystallization temperatures, combined with low switching power and fast switching rate. Ga2Te3 and non-stoichiometric alloys appear to be atypical PCMs; they are characterized by regular tetrahedral structures and the absence of metavalent bonding. The sp3 gallium hybridization in cubic and amorphous Ga2Te3 is also different from conventional p-bonding in flagship PCMs, raising questions about its phase-change mechanism. Furthermore, gallium tellurides exhibit a number of unexpected and highly unusual phenomena, such as nanotectonic compression and viscosity anomalies just above their melting points. Using high-energy X-ray diffraction, supported by first-principles simulations, we will elucidate the atomic structure of amorphous Ga2Te5 PLD films, compare it with the crystal structure of tetragonal gallium pentatelluride, and investigate the electrical, optical, and thermal properties of these two materials to assess their potential for memory applications, among others. In the present work, a WC particle-reinforced CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) was fabricated by laser melting deposition (LMDed). The LMDed CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy (CoCrFeMnNi) composite is primarily comprised of a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal structure. However, in the case of CoCrFeMnNi with 2.5 wt.% WC, it exhibits a combination of an FCC matrix and a ceramic phase known as M23C6. The corrosion behavior of CoCrFeMnNi and CoCrFeMnNi with 2.5 wt.% WC particle in 0.5 M H2SO4 was comparatively investigated. Compared with CoCrFeMnNi, the passive film formed on the CoCrFeMnNi with 2.5 wt.% WC had a more stable and stronger protective property. The corrosion current density of the CoCrFeMnNi with 2.5 wt.% WC dropped by 149.1% compared to that of the CoCrFeMnNi, indicating that the CoCrFeMnNi with 2.5 wt.% WC had better corrosion resistance than that of the CoCrFeMnNi. In this work, Li+-doped NiO:Yb,Er thin films are obtained via pulsed laser deposition. It was found that the films exhibit high transparency in the visible region and clearly red up-conversion luminescence under 980 nm excitation. Doping with Li+ can adjust the up-conversion emission intensity of the films. Moreover, all the films have p-type conductivity with a single activation energy of around 360 meV. The sheet resistivity of the films can be improved through changing the doping concentration of Li+ ions. Background: The aims of this study are as follows: (1) to investigate the level and probability of bacterial contamination on scrub suits over time for medical personnel working inside and/or outside the operating room (OR) area; (2) to discuss the protective role of cover gowns against bacterial contamination; and (3) to consider the necessity of changing into clean suits whenever entering the OR in terms of preventing periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in total joint replacement (TJR). Methods: The bacterial colony count was examined on the chest area of the scrub suits worn during various daily clinical practices. The genus/species of the contaminants were identified by matrix-assisted laser deposition ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). Results: The scrub suits worn outside the OR area showed a greater level of bacterial contamination than those worn inside the OR area, although the colony counts tended to increase over time both in and out of the area. The probability of contamination involving coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) (known as the primary cause of PJI) did not increase significantly in the scrubs worn inside the OR area, but did increase significantly after a long-time departure from the OR area. Conclusions: Our results suggest that wearing scrub suits outside and/or the long duration of wearing the same suits can significantly increase the level and probability of any bacterial contamination (including CNS) on scrub suits. Polymeric composites such as Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK)/carbon fiber (CF) have been widely utilized due to outstanding performances such as high specific strength and specific modulus. The PEEK/CF components via powder bed fusion additive manufacturing usually show brittle fracture behaviors induced by their poor interfacial affinity and inner voids. These defects are strongly associated with powder packing quality upon deposition. The particle dynamic model has been widely employed to study the interactions of particle motions. Powder property, bulk material property, and interfacial features of composite powders are key factors in the particle dynamic model. In this work, an efficient and systematic material evaluation is developed for composite powders to investigate their deposition mechanism. The discrete element method is utilized to simulate the dynamic behaviors of PEEK/CF composite powders. The powder properties, bulk material properties, and interfacial features of powders are calibrated and justified by experimental measurement, numerical simulation, and design of experiments. The particle dynamic model can explain the powder flow behaviors and interactions. The experimental and simulation AOR results show a maximal deviation of 4.89%. It reveals that the addition of short CF particles can assist the flow of PEEK powders and improve the packing quality of the composite powders. The results show an experimental improvement of 31.3% and 55.2% for PEEK/CF_30wt% and PEEK/CF_50wt%, with a simulated improvement of 27.4% and 50.2% for corresponding composite powders. With the development of high-speed and heavy-haul railway transportation, the surface failure of rail turnouts has become increasingly severe due to insufficient high hardness-toughness combination. In this work, in situ bainite steel matrix composites with WC primary reinforcement were fabricated via direct laser deposition (DLD). With the increased primary reinforcement content, the adaptive adjustments of the matrix microstructure and in situ reinforcement were obtained at the same time. Furthermore, the dependence of the adaptive adjustment of the composite microstructure on the composites' balance of hardness and impact toughness was evaluated. During DLD, the laser induces an interaction among the primary composite powders, which leads to obvious changes in the phase composition and morphology of the composites. With the increased WC primary reinforcement content, the dominant sheaves of the lath-like bainite and the few island-like retained austenite are changed into needle-like lower bainite and plenty of block-like retained austenite in the matrix, and the final reinforcement of Fe3W3C and WC is obtained. In addition, with the increased primary reinforcement content, the microhardness of the bainite steel matrix composites increases remarkably, but the impact toughness decreases. However, compared with conventional metal matrix composites, the in situ bainite steel matrix composites manufactured via DLD possess a much better hardness-toughness balance, which can be attributed to the adaptive adjustment of the matrix microstructure. Multicomponent equimolar perovskite oxides (ME-POs) have recently emerged as a highly promising class of materials with unique synergistic effects, making them well-suited for applications in such areas as photovoltaics and micro- and nanoelectronics. High-entropy perovskite oxide thin film in the (Gd0.2Nd0.2La0.2Sm0.2Y0.2)CoO3 (RECO, where RE = Gd0.2Nd0.2La0.2Sm0.2Y0.2, C = Co, and O = O3) system was synthesized via pulsed laser deposition. The crystalline growth in an amorphous fused quartz substrate and single-phase composition of the synthesized film was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Surface conductivity and activation energy were determined using a novel technique implementing atomic force microscopy (AFM) in combination with current mapping. The optoelectronic properties of the deposited RECO thin film were characterized using UV/VIS spectroscopy. The energy gap and nature of optical transitions were calculated using the Inverse Logarithmic Derivative (ILD) and four-point resistance method, suggesting direct allowed transitions with altered dispersions. The narrow energy gap of RECO, along with its relatively high absorption properties in the visible spectrum, positions it as a promising candidate for further exploration in the domains of low-energy infrared optics and electrocatalysis. Annular laser metal deposition (ALMD) is a rising technology that fabricates near-net-shaped components. In this research, a single factor experiment with 18 groups was designed to study the influence of process parameters on the geometric characteristics (bead width, bead height, fusion depth, and fusion line) and thermal history of Ti6Al4V tracks. The results show that discontinuous and uneven tracks with pores or large-sized incomplete fusion defects were observed when the laser power was less than 800 W or the defocus distance was −5 mm. The laser power had a positive effect on the bead width and height, while the scanning speed had the opposite effect. The shape of the fusion line varied at different defocus distances, and the straight fusion line could be obtained with the appropriate process parameters. The scanning speed was the parameter that had the greatest effect on the molten pool lifetime and solidification time as well as the cooling rate. In addition, the microstructure and microhardness of the thin wall sample were also studied. Many clusters with various sizes in different zones were distributed within the crystal. High-entropy alloy (HEA) is a new type of multi-principal alloy material and the Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr HEAs have attracted more and more attention from researchers due to their high melting point, special plasticity, and excellent corrosion resistance. In this paper, in order to reduce the density of the alloy and maintain the strength of the Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr HEAs, the effects of high-density elements Hf and Ta on the properties of HEAs were explored for the first time based on molecular dynamics simulations. A low-density and high-strength Hf0.25NbTa0.25TiZr HEA suitable for laser melting deposition was designed and formed. Studies have shown that the decrease in the proportion of Ta element reduces the strength of HEA, while the decrease in Hf element increases the strength of HEA. The simultaneous decrease in the ratio of Hf and Ta elements reduces the elastic modulus and strength of HEA and leads to the coarsening of the alloy microstructure. The application of laser melting deposition (LMD) technology refines the grains and effectively solves the coarsening problem. Compared with the as-cast state, the as-deposited Hf0.25NbTa0.25TiZr HEA obtained by LMD forming has obvious grain refinement (from 300 μm to 20–80 μm). At the same time, compared with the as-cast Hf0.25NbTa0.25TiZr HEA (σs = 730 ± 23 MPa), the as-deposited Hf0.25NbTa0.25TiZr HEA has higher strength (σs = 925 ± 9 MPa), which is similar to the as-cast equiatomic ratio HfNbTaTiZr HEA (σs = 970 ± 15 MPa). Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) can obtain the spectroscopic response of specific analytes. In controlled conditions, it is a powerful quantitative technique. However, often the sample and its SERS spectrum are complex. Pharmaceutical compounds in human biofluids with strong interfering signals from proteins and other biomolecules are a typical example. Among the techniques for drug dosage, SERS was reported to detect low drug concentrations, with analytical capability comparable to that of the assessed High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. Here, for the first time, we report the use of SERS for Therapeutic Drug Monitoring of the Anti-Epileptic Drug Perampanel (PER) in human saliva. We used inert substrates decorated with gold NPs deposited via Pulsed Laser Deposition as SERS sensors. We show that it is possible to detect PER in saliva via SERS after an optimized treatment of the saliva sample. Using a phase separation process, it is possible to extract all the diluted PER in saliva from the saliva phase to a chloroform phase. This allows us to detect PER in the saliva at initial concentrations of the order of 10−7 M, thus approaching those of clinical interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
