In China, groundwater loss caused by underground coal mining is becoming increasingly serious. The key to groundwater restoration is to repair mining-induced water-conducting fractures (WCFs) in the overlying strata. In this study, the adsorption–consolidation sealing characteristics of chemical precipitates were used to conduct permeability reduction (PR) experiments, including adding mixed CaCO3 and Fe(OH)3 to a sandstone specimen with a single fracture at room temperature. An aqueous solution of Na2CO3 was used as the simulated groundwater, and a solution of mixed CaCl2 and FeCl2 was used as the repair reagent to simulate the water seepage conditions of a fractured rock mass. The two aqueous solutions were simultaneously injected into a single-fractured rock specimen at a constant flow rate. The experimental results show that the Fe(OH)3 colloid encapsulated CaCO3 crystals in a mixed precipitate, reducing the overall structural stability of the mixed precipitate and restricting repair and PR efficiency. However, the Fe(OH)3 precipitate had better PR efficiency in the initial stage of the experiment. Therefore, a better scheme was put forward to repair the WCF, utilizing a mixed Fe(OH)3 and CaCO3 precipitate with a molar ratio close to 1:4 in the early stage and a single CaCO3 precipitate in the later stage. In calcium nephrolithiasis (CaNL), most calcium kidney stones are identified as calcium oxalate (CaOx) with variable amounts of calcium phosphate (CaP), where CaP is found as the core component. The nucleation of CaP could be the first step of CaP+CaOx (mixed) stone formation. High urinary supersaturation of CaP due to hypercalciuria and an elevated urine pH have been described as the two main factors in the nucleation of CaP crystals. Our previous in vivo findings (in mice) show that transient receptor potential canonical type 3 (TRPC3)-mediated Ca2+ entry triggers a transepithelial Ca2+ flux to regulate proximal tubular (PT) luminal [Ca2+], and TRPC3-knockout (KO; -/-) mice exhibited moderate hypercalciuria and microcrystal formation at the loop of Henle (LOH). Therefore, we utilized TRPC3 KO mice and exposed them to both hypercalciuric [2% calcium gluconate (CaG) treatment] and alkalineuric conditions [0.08% acetazolamide (ACZ) treatment] to generate a CaNL phenotype. Our results revealed a significant CaP and mixed crystal formation in those treated KO mice (KOT) compared to their WT counterparts (WTT). Importantly, prolonged exposure to CaG and ACZ resulted in a further increase in crystal size for both treated groups (WTT and KOT), but the KOT mice crystal sizes were markedly larger. Moreover, kidney tissue sections of the KOT mice displayed a greater CaP and mixed microcrystal formation than the kidney sections of the WTT group, specifically in the outer and inner medullary and calyceal region; thus, a higher degree of calcifications and mixed calcium lithiasis in the kidneys of the KOT group was displayed. In our effort to find the Ca2+ signaling pathophysiology of PT cells, we found that PT cells from both treated groups (WTT and KOT) elicited a larger Ca2+ entry compared to the WT counterparts because of significant inhibition by the store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) inhibitor, Pyr6. In the presence of both SOCE (Pyr6) and ROCE (receptor-operated Ca2+ entry) inhibitors (Pyr10), Ca2+ entry by WTT cells was moderately inhibited, suggesting that the Ca2+ and pH levels exerted sensitivity changes in response to ROCE and SOCE. An assessment of the gene expression profiles in the PT cells of WTT and KOT mice revealed a safeguarding effect of TRPC3 against detrimental processes (calcification, fibrosis, inflammation, and apoptosis) in the presence of higher pH and hypercalciuric conditions in mice. Together, these findings show that compromise in both the ROCE and SOCE mechanisms in the absence of TRPC3 under hypercalciuric plus higher tubular pH conditions results in higher CaP and mixed crystal formation and that TRPC3 is protective against those adverse effects. The treatment of the bulky Rind-based dibromosilanes, (Rind)2SiBr2 (2) [Rind = 1,1,7,7-tetra-R1-3,3,5,5-tetra-R2-s-hydrindacen-4-yl: EMind (a: R1 = Et, R2 = Me) and Eind (b: R1 = R2 = Et)], with two equivalents of tBuLi in Et2O at low temperatures resulted in the formation of blue solutions derived from the diarylsilylenes, (Rind)2Si: (3). Upon warming the solutions above −20 °C, the blue color gradually faded, accompanying the decomposition of 3 and yielding cyclic hydrosilanes (4) via intramolecular C–H bond insertion at the Si(II) center. The molecular structures of the bulky Eind-based 3b and 4b were confirmed by X-ray crystallography. Thus, at −20 °C, blue crystals were formed (Crystal-A), which were identified as mixed crystals of 3b and 4b. Additionally, colorless crystals of 4b as a singular component were isolated (Crystal-B), whose structure was also determined by an X-ray diffraction analysis. Although the isolation of 3 was difficult due to their thermally labile nature, their structural characteristics and electronic properties were discussed based on the experimental findings complemented by computational results. In addressing the global need for sustainable energy conversion, this study presents a breakthrough in thermoelectric materials research by optimizing the Bi2O2Se1–xTex system in the Bi2O2Se/Bi2O2Te pseudobinary series. Leveraging the principles of innovative transport mechanisms and defect engineering, we introduce tellurium (Te) doping into Bi2O2Se to enhance its thermoelectric properties synergistically. With the help of various advanced characterization tools such as XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, TGA, LFA, and DSC, combined with relevant resistance and density measurement techniques, we conducted an in-depth exploration of the complex interactions between various factors within thermoelectric materials. We recognize that the balance and synergy of these factors in the thermoelectric conversion process are crucial to achieving efficient energy conversion. Through systematic research, we are committed to revealing the mechanisms of these interactions and providing a solid scientific foundation for the optimal design and performance enhancement of thermoelectric materials. Finally, the advantage coefficient (ZT) of the thermoelectric material has been significantly improved. The crystallographic analysis confirms the formation of a continuous series of mixed crystals with varying Te concentrations, adhering to Vegard's law and exhibiting significant improvements in electrical and thermal conductivities. The Bi2O2Se1–xTex crystals, particularly the Bi2O2Se0.6Te0.4 composition, demonstrate a peak ZT of 0.86 at 373 K. This achievement aligns with recent advancements in defect-enabled mechanisms and band convergence and sets a new standard for high-performance thermoelectrics. Eddavidite is a new mineral species (IMA2018-010) with ideal formula, Cu12Pb2O15Br2, and cubic Fm 3 ¯ m symmetry: a = 9.2407(9) Å; V = 789.1(2) Å3; Z = 2. Eddavidite is the bromine analog of murdochite, Cu12Pb2O15Cl2, with which it forms a solid solution series. The type locality is the Southwest mine, Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona, U.S.A. Eddavidite also occurs in the Ojuela mine, Mapimí, Durango, Mexico. Eddavidite occurs as domains within mixed murdochite–eddavidite crystals. The empirical formula, normalized to 12 Cu apfu, is Cu12(Pb1.92Fe0.06Si0.06)(O15.08F0.02)-(Br0.99Cl0.89☐0.12). Type locality samples contain up to 67% eddavidite component, while Ojuela mine samples contain up to 62%. Mixed eddavidite–murdochite crystals show forms {100} and {111}; the habit grades from cubic through cuboctahedral to octahedral. Mixed eddavidite–-murdochite crystals exhibit good cleavage on {111}. Eddavidite is black, opaque with submetallic luster, and visually indistinguishable from intergrown murdochite. Its Mohs hardness is 4; dmeas. = 6.33 g/cm3, dcalc. = 6.45 g/cm3. The crystal structure, refined to R = 0.0112, consists of corner-sharing square planar CuO4 units, arranged in Cu12O24 metal oxide clusters, which encapsulate Br atoms. PbO8 cubes share edges with Cu12O24 clusters in a continuous framework. Eddavidite incorporates bromine remaining after desiccation of paleo-seawater at its two known localities, which were both once situated along the Western Interior Seaway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Glancing angle deposition (GLAD) of CdTe can produce a cubic, hexagonal, or mixed phase crystal structure depending upon the oblique deposition angles (Φ) and substrate temperature. GLAD CdTe films are prepared at different Φ at room temperature (RT) and a high temperature (HT) of 250 °C and used as interlayers between the n-type hexagonal CdS window layer and the p-type cubic CdTe absorber layer to investigate the role of interfacial tailoring at the CdS/CdTe heterojunction in photovoltaic (PV) device performance. The Φ = 80° RT GLAD CdTe interlayer and CdS both have the hexagonal structure, which reduces lattice mismatch at the CdS/CdTe interface and improves electronic quality at the heterojunction for device performance optimization. The device performance of HT CdS/CdTe solar cells with Φ = 80° RT with 50 to 350 nm thick GLAD CdTe interlayers is evaluated in which a 250 nm interlayer device shows the best device performance with a 0.53 V increase in open-circuit voltage and fill-factor product and a 0.73% increase in absolute efficiency compared to the HT baseline PV device without an interlayer. The relationship between halogen content and the elastic/vibrational properties of MAPbBr3−xClx mixed crystals (x = 1.5, 2, 2.5, and 3) with MA = CH3NH3+ has been studied using Brillouin and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. The longitudinal and transverse sound velocities, the absorption coefficients and the two elastic constants C11 and C44 could be obtained and compared for the four mixed-halide perovskites. In particular, the elastic constants of the mixed crystals have been determined for the first time. A quasi-linear increase in the sound velocity and the elastic constant C11 with increasing chlorine content was observed for the longitudinal acoustic waves. C44 was insensitive to the Cl content and very low, indicating a low elasticity to shear stress in mixed perovskites regardless of the Cl content. The acoustic absorption of the LA mode increased with increasing heterogeneity in the mixed system, especially for the intermediate composition where the Br and Cl ratio was 1:1. In addition, a significant decrease in the Raman-mode frequency of the low-frequency lattice modes and the rotational and torsional modes of the MA cations was observed with decreasing Cl content. It clearly showed that the changes in the elastic properties as the halide composition changes were correlated with the lattice vibrations. The present findings may facilitate a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between halogen substitution, vibrational spectra and elastic properties, and may also pave the way for optimizing the operation of perovskite-based photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices by tailoring their chemical composition. Rare-earth-doped mixed crystals have demonstrated tunable optical properties, and it is of great importance to study the structural characteristics of the mixed-crystal hosts. Herein, LuxGd1-xVO4 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solution nanocrystals were synthesized by a modified sol–gel method, with a pure crystalline phase and element composition. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Rietveld refinement results showed that LuxGd1−xVO4 nanocrystals are continuous solid solutions with a tetragonal zircon phase (space group I41/amd) and the lattice parameters strictly follow Vegard's law. The detailed local structures were studied by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, which revealed that the average bond length of Gd-O fluctuates and decreases, while the average bond length of Lu-O gradually decreases with the increase in Lu content. Furthermore, the binding energy differences of core levels indicate that the covalent V-O bond is relatively stable, while the ionicity of the Lu-O bond decreases with the increasing x value, and the ionicity of the Gd-O bond fluctuates with small amplitude. The valence band structures were further confirmed by the first-principles calculations, indicating that the valence band is contributed to by the O 2p nonbonding state, localized Gd 4f and Lu 4f states, and the hybridized states between the bonding O 2p and V 3d. The binding energies of the Lu core and the valence levels tend to decrease gradually with the increase in Lu content. This work provides insight into the structural features of mixed-crystal hosts, which have been developed in recent years to improve laser performance by providing different positions for active ions to obtain inhomogeneous broadening spectra. This work presents details of the synthesis, properties and structure of a novel neptunium carbonate (NH4)[NpO2CO3], a member of the M[AnO2CO3] (M = K, (NH4), Rb, Cs) class of compounds. Carbonates play an important role in the migration of actinides in the environment, and thus are relevant for handling and disposal of radioactive wastes, including spent nuclear fuel and vitrified raffinates. Knowledge of the crystallographic structure of these compounds is important for models of the environmental migration behavior based on thermodynamic descriptions of such chemical processes. (NH4)[NpO2CO3] crystals were obtained during long-term hydrothermal treatment of Np(VI) in aqueous ammonia at 250 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) show that a single-phase sample containing only Np(V) was obtained. Structural features of (NH4)[NpO2CO3] were elucidated from single crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed by vibrational spectroscopy. Preparing mixed crystals composed of two or more components is one of the useful approaches to not only modifying the physical properties and chemical reactivity of molecular crystals but also creating their novel functionality. Here we report preparation and photoresponsive properties of two-component mixed crystals containing photochromic bis(benzothienyl)ethene derivatives that show different colors in the closed-ring forms depending on the oxidation state of the benzothiophene groups. The similarity in the molecular structures of the two diarylethenes, which are different from each other only in the oxidation state of the benzothiophene groups, allowed the formation of two-component mixed crystals by recrystallization from mixed solutions containing the two compounds. Irradiating the mixed crystals with light of appropriate wavelengths induced the selective photoisomerizaion of the two diarylethenes, leading to multicolor photochromic performance, such as colorless, orange, yellow, and red. Such molecular crystals with multiresponsive functions can find potential applications in multistate optical recording and multicolor displays. The present results demonstrate that combining differently oxidized diarylethene derivatives is an effective strategy for preparing multicomponent mixed crystals with finely tuned composition and desired photoresponsive properties. The title structures of bis(guanidinium) trioxofluorophosphate, bis(guanidinium) trioxofluorophosphate-phosphite (0.716/0.284), bis(guanidinium) trioxofluorophosphate-phosphite (0.501/0.499), bis(guanidinium) trioxofluorophosphate-phosphite (0.268/0.732), and bis(guanidinium) phosphite are crystal-chemically isotypic. Their structures correspond to the structure of bis(guanidinium) trioxofluorophosphate which was determined by Prescott, Troyanov, Feist & Kemnitz (Z. Anorg. Allg. Chem. 2002, 628, 1749–1755). The P and O atoms of the substituted trioxofluorophosphate and phosphite anions share the same positions while the P-F and P-Hhydrido are almost parallel and oriented in the same direction. Two symmetry-independent anions and two of three symmetry-independent cations are situated on the crystallographic mirror planes. The ions are interconnected by N-H⋯O hydrogen bonds of moderate strength. The most frequent graph set motif is R 2 2 (8) , which involves interactions between the primary amine groups and the trioxofluorophosphate or phosphite O atoms. Fluorine, as well as the hydrido hydrogen, avoids inclusion into the hydrogen-bond network. The Hirshfeld surface analysis was also performed for the comparison of intermolecular interactions in the title structures of bis(guanidinium trioxofluorophosphate and bis(guanidinium) phosphite. The title crystals were also characterized by vibrational spectroscopy methods (FTIR and Raman) and the second harmonic generation (SHG). The relative SHG efficiency considerably decreases from bis(guanidinium) trioxofluorophosphate to bis(guanidinium) phosphite for the fundamental 1064 nm laser line. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to solve the problem of environmental health hazards caused by phthalate esters, a series of pure Bi2O2CO3 and light (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu) and heavy (Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu) rare earth-doped Bi2O2CO3 samples were prepared by hydrothermal method. The crystalline phase composition and physical structure of the samples calcined at 300 °C were studied, and we found that the rare earth ion doping promoted the transformation of Bi2O2CO3 to β-Bi2O3 crystalline phase, thus obtaining a mixed crystal phase photocatalyst constituted by rare earth-ion-doped Bi2O2CO3/β-Bi2O3. The Bi2O3/Bi2O2CO3 heterostructure had a lower band gap and more efficient charge transfer. The fabricated samples were applied to the photocatalytic degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) under a 300 W tungsten lamp, and it was found that the rare earth ion doping enhanced the photocatalytic degradation activity of DMP, in which the heavy rare earth of Er-doped sample reached 78% degradation for DMP at 150 min of light illumination. In addition, the doping of rare earths resulted in a larger specific surface area and a stronger absorption of visible light. At the same time, the formation of Bi2O2CO3/β-Bi2O3 heterogeneous junction enhanced the separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crystal habit in igneous rocks provides a window to understand magmatic processes or reveal crystallization environments. Generally, we can obtain the two-dimensional (2D) crystal habits directly from the thin section, which is easy to access. However, the three-dimensional (3D) habit cannot be directly observed in thin sections and needs the stereological conversion from 2D habits. Statistical methods have been developed for stereological conversion, but they cannot identify mixed habits. Our study uses the distributions of the cut-sections of pre-set habits to match the unknown sample and enumerates habit combinations to find the best-match results for mixed habits. The specialized program, HabitEst3D, is developed according to our model in this study. The program is written in Python and is a cross-platform with a user-friendly graphical interface. The input data are the aspect ratio of 2D sections. After setting the parameters, the program finds the best-match estimations fitting the sample, visualizes the results, and saves them in multiple file formats. The program is robust and is not sensitive to outliers to obtain more accurate results. It traverses all possible combinations and needs memory and time but effectively explores the mixed crystal habits in the sample, contributing to investigating magmatic processes in more detail. For more than five decades, alkali niobate-based materials (KxNa1−xNbO3) have been one of the most promising lead-free piezoelectric materials researched to be used in electronics, photocatalysis, energy storage/conversion and medical applications, due to their important health and environmentally friendly nature. In this paper, our strategy was to synthetize the nearest reproductible composition to KxNa1−xNbO3 (KNN) with x = 0.5, placed at the limit of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) with the presence of both polymorphic phases, orthorhombic and tetragonal. The wet synthesis route was chosen to make the mix crystal powders, starting with the suspension preparation of Nb2O5 powder and KOH and NaOH alkaline solutions. Hydrothermal microwave-assisted maturation (HTMW), following the parameter variation T = 200–250 °C, p = 47–60 bar and dwelling time of 30–90 min, was performed. All powders therefore synthesized were entirely KxN1−xNbO3 solid solutions with x = 0.06–0.69, and the compositional, elemental, structural and morphological characterization highlighted polycrystalline particle assemblage with cubic and prismatic morphology, with sizes between 0.28 nm and 2.95 μm and polymorphic O-T phase coexistence, and a d33 piezoelectric constant under 1 pC/N of the compacted unsintered and unpoled discs were found. The Special Issue on "Photoresponsive Molecular Crystals" is a collection of four original research articles dedicated to theoretical and experimental research works providing new insights and experimental findings in the field of photoresponsive crystals. As for crystal engineering, Li and Tong et al. used charge-transfer molecules to fabricate co-crystals with hollow chambers, providing a facile way to prepare co-crystals with complicated topology and morphology [[2]]. K2NiXCo(1−X) (SO4)2·6H2O (KCNSH) mixed crystal is a promising material for solar blind optical filters, combining high transparency in the ultraviolet range with effective suppression of the visible spectral region. Increasing the mechanical strength of these crystals is important to enable them to be machined in the manufacture of optical elements. A comprehensive study of the inhomogeneities and crack resistance of KCNSH crystal as a function of the growth conditions was carried out. The influence of the radial and mosaic inhomogeneity, as well as other structural defects, on the crack resistance of the crystals was analyzed. To assess the crack resistance of crystals, the parameters ca (crack length), c/a (the ratio of crack length to the size of the indentation), and KC (fracture toughness) were used. The correctness of the obtained results was analyzed. The conditions for growing KCNSH crystals with the best crack resistance were determined on the basis of the results of the study. It is shown that growing the mixed crystals using the temperature difference technique with a peripheral solution supply into the shaper provides the best crystal quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pure and Sn/Ni co–doped TiO2 nanomaterials with anatase/rutile mixed crystal were prepared and characterized. The results show that pure TiO2 is a mixed crystal structure composed of a large amount of anatase and a small amount of rutile. Sn doping promotes the phase transformation from anatase to rutile, while Ni doping inhibits the transformation. Both single doping and co–doping are beneficial to the inhibition of photoinduced charge recombination. Sn doping shows the best inhibitory effect on photogenerated charge recombination, and increases the utilization of visible light, displaying the highest photocatalytic activity. The decolorization degree of methylene blue (MB) by Sn–TiO2 is 79.5% after 150 min. The reaction rate constant of Sn–TiO2 is 0.01022 min−1, which is 5.6 times higher than pure TiO2 (0.00181 min–1). The mosaic and radial inhomogeneity of shaped mixed crystals of K2NixCo(1–x)(SO4)2·6H2O (KCNSH) were studied depending on the supercooling of solution, its velocity and its method of supply into the shaper. It was shown that mosaic inhomogeneity could be suppressed when solution is supercooled to about 2 °C. Peripheral supply of the solution (tangential to the wall of the shaper to create a "swirling" flow) with a rate of 55–135 cm/s provides better composition uniformity along the crystal surface in comparison with upright supply of the solution (flow is perpendicular to the crystal surface). Rocksalt-type (Pb,Cd)Te belongs to IV–VI semiconductors exhibiting thermoelectric properties. With the aim of understanding of the influence of Cd substitution in PbTe on thermostructural and elastic properties, we studied PbTe and Pb0.884Cd0.116Te (i) at low temperatures (15 to 300 K) and (ii) at high pressures within the stability range of NaCl-type PbTe (up to 4.5 GPa). For crystal structure studies, powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction methods were used. Modeling of the data included the second-order Grüneisen approximation of the unit-cell-volume variation, V(T), the Debye expression describing the mean square atomic displacements (MSDs), 2>(T), and Birch–Murnaghan equation of state (BMEOS). The fitting of the temperature-dependent diffraction data provided model variations of lattice parameter, the thermal expansion coefficient, and MSDs with temperature. A comparison of the MSD runs simulated for the PbTe and mixed (Pb,Cd)Te crystal leads to the confirmation of recent findings that the cation displacements are little affected by Cd substitution at the Pb site; whereas the Te displacements are markedly higher for the mixed crystal. Moreover, information about static disorder caused by Cd substitution is obtained. The calculations provided two independent ways to determine the values of the overall Debye temperature, θD. The resulting values differ only marginally, by no more than 1 K for PbTe and 7 K for Pb0.884Cd0.116Te crystals. The θD values for the cationic and anionic sublattices were determined. The Grüneisen parameter is found to be nearly independent of temperature. The variations of unit-cell size with rising pressure (the NaCl structure of Pb0.884Cd0.116Te sample was conserved), modeled with the BMEOS, provided the dependencies of the bulk modulus, K, on pressure for both crystals. The K0 value is 45.6(2.5) GPa for PbTe, whereas that for Pb0.884Cd0.116Te is significantly reduced, 33.5(2.8) GPa, showing that the lattice with fractional Cd substitution is less stiff than that of pure PbTe. The obtained experimental values of θD and K0 for Pb0.884Cd0.116Te are in line with the trends described in recently reported theoretical study for (Pb,Cd)Te mixed crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate, through Monte Carlo simulations, the heterogeneous crystallization of linear chains of tangent hard spheres under confinement in one dimension. Confinement is realized through flat, impenetrable, and parallel walls. A wide range of systems is studied with respect to their average chain lengths (N = 12 to 100) and packing densities (φ = 0.50 to 0.61). The local structure is quantified through the Characteristic Crystallographic Element (CCE) norm descriptor. Here, we split the phenomenon into the bulk crystallization, far from the walls, and the projected surface crystallization in layers adjacent to the confining surfaces. Once a critical volume fraction is met, the chains show a phase transition, starting from regions near the hard walls. The established crystal morphologies consist of alternating hexagonal close-packed or face-centered cubic layers with a stacking direction perpendicular to the confining walls. Crystal layer perfection is observed with an increasing concentration. As in the case of the unconstrained phase transition of athermal polymers at high densities, crystal nucleation and growth compete with the formation of sites of a fivefold local symmetry. While surface crystallites show perfection with a predominantly triangular character, the morphologies of square crystals or of a mixed type are also formed. The change in the surface morphology of the (001) and (110) faces of K2CoxNi(1−x)(SO4)2·6H2O (KCNSH) mixed crystal, depending on the supercooling solution, has been studied under various conditions by laser interferometry. The experiments were carried out in both static mode, by changing the solution composition, and in dynamic mode, by changing the flow velocity. The conditions for the onset and suppression of the reaction of the isomorphic replacement leading to the formation of mosaic micro-inhomogeneity in mixed crystals have been studied. The mechanism of the reaction of isomorphic replacement has been analyzed depending on the shift of the solution composition from the initial one. Alkanediols are often used as alternative antimicrobial preservatives for dermal formulations, e.g., hydrophilic creams. These substances show an antimicrobial effect due to their amphiphilic structure. At the same time, their amphiphilic behavior enables various interactions with the cream base itself. Therefore, the effect of four different alkanediols, namely 1,2-pentanediol, 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol (hexylene glycol), 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol on the physical stability of a nonionic hydrophilic cream was investigated. Further, the incorporation of the alkanediols into lamellar structures of the cream was evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. The interaction with the mixed crystals of the cream was found to increase with raising alkyl chain length of the added alkanediol. As a result, consistency and stability of the cream are slightly impaired. A test for efficacy of antimicrobial preservation according to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur.) revealed that the antimicrobial activity is directly linked to the length of the alkyl chain of the alkanediols. 2-Methyl-2,4-pentanediol differs from both findings. This compound has non-vicinal hydroxy groups which result in a reduced amphiphilicity compared to the others. Mathematical models of the hydrodynamics and mass transfer processes during the mixed crystal growth from low-temperature aqueous solutions have been analyzed. The features of these processes are caused by complex design of the crystallizer with a shaper. Two models of the solution flowing into the shaper have been considered. In the first model, the solution is fed to the central part of the crystal. The second model presents a peripheral solution supply along the shaper perimeter, which allows us to create a swirling flow. The calculation models correspond to laminar and turbulent regimes of solution flow during the growth of K2(Co,Ni)(SO4)2•6H2O mixed crystal from an aqueous solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We used low-temperature reactions to synthesize different-sized CdSe quantum dots (QDs) capped with fatty-acid and phosphine ligands. From the correlation of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses of the synthesized QDs, we observed size-dependent shape anisotropy. In addition, the recorded XRD patterns revealed mixed crystal facets with zinc blende and wurtzite structures in small-sized QDs. Furthermore, from differential absorption (DA) spectra, we extracted the electronic transition energies for different-sized QDs, which were found to be similar to the calculated values of the quantum size levels associated with band mixing of CdSe QDs with a moderate bandgap. We found that the excitonic absorption peaks are increasingly "hidden" with decreasing QD size because of the crystal structure and crystalline quality. The bismuth layer-structured ferroelectrics (BLSFs) materials have potential for high-temperature piezoelectric applications. Among these piezoelectric materials, the CaBi4Ti4O15 (CBT) piezoelectric ceramic with a high decomposition temperature of about 1250 °C attracts a lot of attention. Achieving a CBT single crystal is a significant way to improve its piezoelectric properties. For this purpose, the flux system for growing CBT crystal was explored in this study. The optimum flux composition ratio was found to be PbO:B2O3:CBT = 3:3:1 in mol%, where the PbO–B2O3 mixtures were used as a flux system. Millimeter size flake-shaped CBT crystals were obtained using the spontaneous growth process for the first time. The relationship between the crystal structure and flake growth habit was analyzed. In addition, the bandgap was evaluated by the combination of transmittance spectrum and first-principle calculations. Besides, the piezoelectric property was predicted from the perspective of polyhedral distortion, which indicated the potential of CBT crystal for piezoelectric applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review, for the first time, summarizes the results of studies of the defect formation mechanisms in mixed crystals grown from aqueous solutions. The general mechanism of interaction of a crystal with a foreign solution is described (reaction of isomorphous replacement). As a result of this reaction, the crystal surface turns into a mosaic of local areas where multidirectional processes (dissolution and growth) occur simultaneously. Data on mosaic microinhomogeneity, which is a new type of composition inhomogeneity inherent solely to multicomponent crystals, is presented. A new mechanism for the mismatch stress relaxation in heterocompositions of brittle crystals grown from low-temperature solutions is described; in this case, the formation of misfit dislocations is impossible and stress relaxation occurs due to the formation of numerous inclusions at the interface. The general concept of growing high-quality mixed crystals from solutions is described, using the example of K2(Co, Ni)(SO)2 · 6H2O (KCNSH) mixed crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
