Simple Summary: In recent years, liquid biopsy has been introduced as a new method for the detection and management of cancer, but the studies on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) are lacking conclusive evidence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression of six circulating salivary and plasmatic miRNAs (-21, -31, -138, -145, -184, and -424) as diagnostic biomarkers in patients affected by OSCC and by oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs). Our results showed that liquid biopsy from saliva may be a useful tool for the identification of these biomarkers; in particular, miR-138 and miR-424 showed decreased expression levels in saliva samples in OSCC and OPMD patients compared to healthy controls. The introduction of liquid biopsy in daily clinical practice could revolutionize the approach to oral lesions by allowing the mass screening, stratification and monitoring of patients at risk, the monitoring of the response to treatment and the early identification of any recurrences. By comparing miRNA expression levels from saliva, a statistically significant difference emerged in the expression of miR-138 and miR-424 between the three groups (p < 0.05). In particular, these two miRNAs showed decreased expression levels in saliva samples from OSCC and OPMD patients compared to those from healthy controls. On the other hand, miRNA expression levels in plasma were low in all the groups, and no statistically significant differences were found. This project aims to establish the acceptability and satiety of a hybrid snack containing plant protein and a small percentage of animal protein compared to a meat-based snack. Design: Randomised, crossover, double-blind, controlled post-prandial trial involving 24 participants (18–30 years), with two interventions: (a) a hybrid snack containing plant protein derived from chickpeas and 6.6% lean high-quality pork meat; and (b) a meat-based snack containing 90% lean pork meat. Methods: General, life-style, sensory acceptability questionnaire, and the following laboratory analyses were performed: lipid profile, endocannabinoids, and related compounds. Results: Sensory questionnaires showed in general good acceptability for both bars. Additionally, there was a greater increase in glycemia at 30, 60, and 90 min after consuming the hybrid snack compared to the meat-based snack, with no changes in the lipid profile. Regarding the endocannabinoid compounds and related compounds, the compound N-palmitoleoyl ethanolamine in the acylethanolamide group showed higher levels overall following the consumption of the hybrid snack compared to the meat-based snack, particularly at 2 h. Conclusions: The hybrid snack was associated with changes in endocannabinoid-like compounds. Culturomics has been temporarily exceeded by the advent of omics approaches such as metabarcoding and metagenomics. However, despite improving our knowledge of microbial population composition, both metabarcoding and metagenomics are not suitable for investigating and experimental testing inferences about microbial ecological roles and evolution. This leads to a recent revival of culturomics approaches, which should be supported by improvements in the available tools for high-throughput microbial identification. This study aimed to update the classical PCR-RFLP approach in light of the currently available knowledge on yeast genomics. We generated and analyzed a database including more than 1400 ascomycetous yeast species, each characterized by PCR-RFLP profiles obtained with 143 different endonucleases. The results allowed for the in silico evaluation of the performance of the tested endonucleases in the yeast species' identification and the generation of FId (Fungal Identifier), an online freely accessible tool for the identification of yeast species according to experimentally obtained PCR-RFLP profiles. Passive samplers have long been used to measure atmospheric pollutants in both indoor and outdoor environments. They are simple to operate, and can now monitor several chemical species. However, their use is limited because they usually require a long exposition time and provide a mean value that cannot control or evidence expected or non-expected events of environmental significance. A new apparatus specifically developed for exposing Analyst© passive samplers has been used to monitor ozone and nitrogen dioxide by automatically selecting a sampling duration of 8 h, as most legislation requires. The instrument was designed to accumulate ozone or NO2 in one passive sampler for 8 h over each day, and in another passive sampler for the remaining hours. This allows for a long-time accumulation of the 8 h ozone or nitrogen dioxide in a dedicated sampler. Measurements were carried out NE of Rome at a rural site. A description of the experiments is given, with special emphasis on the quality controls. Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) forests in the Mediterranean region are facing increasing abandonment due to a combination of factors, ranging from climate change to socioeconomic issues. The recovery of chestnut ecosystems and their preservation and valorization are key to ensuring the supply of the wide spectrum of ecosystem services they provide and to preventing detrimental environmental shifts. The study's objective was to provide evidence on the effects of different management options on the ecophysiology of chestnut forests, with diverse pruning intensities (low, medium, and high intensity versus no pruning) tested in an abandoned chestnut stand in central Italy with the aim of recovering and rehabilitating it for fruit production. Innovative Internet of Things (IoT) 'Tree Talker' devices were installed on single trees to continuously monitor and measure ecophysiological (i.e., water transport, net primary productivity, foliage development) and microclimatic parameters. Results show a reduction in water use in trees subjected to medium- and high-intensity pruning treatments, along with a decrease in the carbon sequestration function. However, interestingly, the results highlight that trees regain their usual sap flow and carbon sink activity at the end of the first post-pruning growing season and fully realign during the following year, as also confirmed by the NDVI values. As such, this paper demonstrates the efficacy of recovering and managing abandoned chestnut forests, and the initial setback in carbon sequestration resulting from pruning is rapidly remedied with the advantage of reviving trees for fruit production. Additionally, the reduced water demand induced by pruning could represent a promising adaptation strategy to climate change, bolstering the resilience of chestnut trees to prolonged and intensified drought periods, which are projected to increase under future climate scenarios, particularly in the Mediterranean region. A rising demand for prosthetic-driven jaw reconstruction is encountered in maxillo-facial surgery. The free scapula flap is a workhorse of cervico-facial reconstructions, but an implant-based prosthetic rehabilitation on this flap is a debated topic. A systematic review of the papers on this subject has been conducted on Embase, MEDLINE, and Cochrane libraries following PRISMA guidelines, in order to analyze the results described in the literature. A total of nine papers were eligible for inclusion, with 83 scapula flaps overall being used for an implant-based prosthetic rehabilitation. The mandible was the reconstructed jaw in 58.0% of the cases. Overall, 249 implants were positioned (mean 3.0 implant per flap) with a 3.6% implant failure rate. In 95.2% of the cases, delayed rehabilitation was performed. Radiotherapy and the timing of implant placement did not seem to influence implant failure. Only two papers analyzed the quality of life following the rehabilitation, highlighting a functional improvement. Scapula-based implant-prosthetic rehabilitation is a feasible technique that can also benefit from the new CAD/CAM technologies and digital workflows. Nonetheless, further studies focused on this topic and on its impact on the quality of life are needed in order to analyze risk factors and to optimize the outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we report the preparation and characterization of water-stable films with UV-shielding and good mechanical properties, exploiting the synergistic effect of regenerated silk fibroin and bamboo-derived cellulose. Silk fibroin (SF)/bamboo (B) hybrid films are achieved by solubilizing both silk and bamboo fibers in formic acid with added CaCl2. Infrared spectroscopy indicates that SF, when combined with bamboo, undergoes a conformational transition, providing evidence of an increase in SF crystallinity. Exploiting the intrinsic absorption of SF in the ultraviolet region, UV–Vis spectroscopy was used to assess the glass transition temperature (Tg) of SF/B films, showing a decrease in Tg by increasing the SF content. The addition of 10 wt% SF to the B matrix improved the elastic modulus by about 10% while conserving the strain at break with respect to the neat B films, increasing the UV shielding properties, while water absorption suggested the material's hydrophilic and swelling capacity even after one month. The hybrid films showed, under solar irradiation, a photoprotective behavior on keratinocyte human cells by increasing cellular viability. Simple Summary: Lck is an important kinase that plays a key role in the physiological responses of T lymphocytes as well as in several other tissues such as the lung, intestine, brain, endometrium, and prostate. It can be found bound to the cell membrane, free in the cytosol, and even in the nucleus as it interacts with different proteins involved in various biological responses. Additionally, Lck is considered a proto-oncogene. Phosphatases and the Csk kinase control Lck activity: phosphatases can open and inactivate the structure, while Csk can only close it. The activation and modifications of Lck differ between normal and pathological conditions, such as cancer, allergy, autoimmunity, and graft vs. host disease. These differences may lead to new targets for pharmacological therapy. This overview briefly summarizes the characteristics and modulations of the enzyme. Lck, a member of the Src kinase family, is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase involved in immune cell activation, antigen recognition, tumor growth, and cytotoxic response. The enzyme has usually been linked to T lymphocyte activation upon antigen recognition. Lck activation is central to CD4, CD8, and NK activation. However, recently, it has become clearer that activating the enzyme in CD8 cells can be independent of antigen presentation and enhance the cytotoxic response. The role of Lck in NK cytotoxic function has been controversial in a similar fashion as the role of the enzyme in CAR T cells. Inhibiting tyrosine kinases has been a highly successful approach to treating hematologic malignancies. The inhibitors may be useful in treating other tumor types, and they may be useful to prevent cell exhaustion. New, more selective inhibitors have been documented, and they have shown interesting activities not only in tumor growth but in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, asthma, and graft vs. host disease. Drug repurposing and bioinformatics can aid in solving several unsolved issues about the role of Lck in cancer. Simple Summary: The treatment of a transverse maxillary constriction is a challenge for orthodontists, as the expansion approach depends on the midpalatal suture maturation. A conventional palatal expander provides skeletal effects in an unfused suture, while surgically or miniscrew-assisted expansions are suggested in a closed suture. The midpalatal suture development is affected by multiple variables, such as age, sex, and facial growth patterns. Consequently, we conducted a CBCT study among 263 patients aged from 8 to 20 in order to evaluate the relation between midpalatal suture maturation and age, sex, and vertical and sagittal growth patterns. The midpalatal suture was classified into five stages from A to E according to the progressively increasing maturation stage. The youngest individuals, the male participants, and the hyperdivergent subjects tended to show lower stages. Therefore, our study provided a further analysis of the potential predictors involved in midpalatal suture maturation that are useful to the clinician to choose the most effective expansion approach. Background. The evaluation of midpalatal suture maturation is essential to undertake the most predictable maxillary expansion approach. Several factors, such as age, gender, and facial growth patterns, seem to be involved in midpalatal suture staging and, consequently, in its opening; however, the link between these variables and the stages of midpalatal suture development remains poorly understood. Our study aimed to analyse the midpalatal suture maturation in relation to age, sex, and skeletal growth patterns by CBCT. Methods. We enrolled 263 patients (119 males and 144 females) aged from 8 to 20 years. The midpalatal suture maturation was defined according to Angelieri et al.'s classification using a low-dose CBCT. The chi-square test and linear regression were applied to investigate the suture stages by age, sex, and vertical and sagittal growth patterns. Results. Stage A was present in 8- and 9-year-olds with a larger prevalence in boys, while the prevalence of stage E increased progressively with age. Stage D was the most prevalent in our sample. The statistical analysis described that stage A was more likely in the youngest subjects, and stage E in the oldest participants. The males tended to have lower maturation stages. Moreover, the hypodivergent and normodivergent subjects tended to have higher maturation stages, while Class III was more likely in subjects in stages D or E. Conclusions. A total of 127 patients were in stages A, B, and C, showing an unfused suture. In young individuals, the opening of the midpalatal suture leads to a proper facial growth development by correcting the transverse superior hypoplasia. The upcoming Euro 7 vehicle exhaust emissions regulation includes particle number (PN) limits for all vehicles, not only those with direct fuel injection. It also sets the lower detection particle size of the PN methodology to 10 nm from 23 nm. Recently, a commercial diffusion charger-based PEMS added the possibility of switching the lower size between 23 nm and 10 nm. In this study, we assessed the dual PEMS in the calibration laboratory using diffusion flame soot or spark discharge graphite particles following the regulated procedures. Furthermore, we compared the dual PEMS with a laboratory grade system (LABS) using soot, graphite, and vehicle exhaust particles. To put the results into perspective, we added comparisons (validations) of two additional 23 nm PEMSs with LABSs over a three-year period. The results showed that the differences of the 23 nm PEMSs remained the same (around 35% underestimation) over the years and were similar to the dual PEMS. This difference is still well within the permissible tolerance from the regulation (50%). We argued that the reason is the calibration material used by the manufacturer (spark discharge graphite). We demonstrated that calibrating with combustion soot could reduce the differences. The 10 nm PEMS gave similar results but with much smaller differences, indicating that the calibration material is of less importance for the Euro 7 step. The results showed that the measurement uncertainty has not increased but rather decreased for the specific PEMS switching from 23 nm to 10 nm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hyperinflammatory Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and rapidly-progressive interstitial lung diseases (RP-ILD) secondary to inflammatory myopathies (IIM) present important similarities. These data support the use of anti-rheumatic drugs for the treatment of COVID-19. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of combining baricitinib and pulse steroids with the Standard of Care (SoC) for the treatment of critically ill COVID-19 patients. We retrospectively enrolled consecutive patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with COVID-19-pneumonia. Patients treated with SoC (dexamethasone plus remdesivir) were compared to patients treated with baricitinib plus 6-methylprednisolone pulses (Rheuma-group). We enrolled 246 patients: 104/246 in the SoC and 142/246 in the Rheuma-group. All patients presented laboratory findings suggestive of hyperinflammatory response. Sixty-four patients (26.1%) died during ICU hospitalization. The mortality rate in the Rheuma-group was significantly lower than in the SoC-group (15.5 vs. 40.4%, p < 0.001). Compared to the SoC-group, patients in the Rheuma-group presented significantly lower inflammatory biomarker levels after one week of treatment. Higher ferritin levels after one week of treatment were strongly associated with mortality (p < 0.001). In this large real-life COVID-19 cohort, baricitinib and pulse steroids led to a significant reduction in mortality, paralleled by a prompt reduction in inflammatory biomarkers. Human activities impact greenhouse gas emissions through changes in land cover, land use, and land management. Conservation, restoration, and improved land use and land management are increasingly recognized as mitigation solutions. Policy instruments are crucial for addressing environmental challenges and supporting governance actors in enhancing carbon sequestration and reducing emissions in the land sector. The aim of this study was to evaluate the existing spatial decision support systems (SDSSs) for assessing land-based mitigation options and to help policymakers choose the best way to use and manage land. In order to search for tools, a systematic literature review was conducted, where 187 articles suitable for the specified criteria were found, from which 68 tools were selected. Additionally, following the application of the exclusion criteria, 18 tools were chosen for the final analysis. The tools were classified and analyzed based on various features such as type of land-use management, land use, country of application, information on carbon pools, and the number of published articles associated with each tool. Five SDSSs were found to be most suitable for policymakers seeking to implement the most effective land use and land management in order to enhance carbon sequestration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicles (AV), recent years have seen an increasing evolution of onboard sensors and communication interfaces capable of interacting with available infrastructures, including satellite constellations, road structures, modern and heterogeneous network systems (e.g., 5G and beyond) and even adjacent vehicles. Consequently, it is essential to develop architectures that cover data fusion (multi–sensor approach), communication, power management, and system monitoring to ensure accurate and reliable perception in several navigation scenarios. Motivated by the EMERGE project, this paper describes the definition and implementation of an On Board Unit (OBU) dedicated to the navigation process. The OBU is equipped with the Xsens MTi–630 AHRS inertial sensor, a multi–constellation/multi–frequency Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver with the u–blox ZED–F9P module and communication interfaces that afford access to the PointPerfect augmentation service. Experimental results show that GNSS, with corrections provided by augmentation, affords centimetre accuracy, with a Time To First Fix (TTFF) of about 30 s. During the on–road tests, we also collect: the output of fusion with inertial sensor data, monitoring information that assess correct operation of the module, and the OBU power consumption, that remains under 5 W even in high–power operating mode. Background/Objectives: The surgical resection of pulmonary metastases is considered a therapeutic option in selected cases. In light of this, we present the results from a national multicenter prospective registry of lung metastasectomy. Methods: This retrospective analysis involves data collected prospectively and consecutively in a national multicentric Italian database, including patients who underwent lung metastasectomy. The primary endpoints were the analysis of morbidity and overall survival (OS), with secondary endpoints focusing on the analysis of potential risk factors affecting both morbidity and OS. Results: A total 470 lung procedures were performed (4 pneumonectomies, 46 lobectomies/bilobectomies, 13 segmentectomies and 407 wedge resections) on 461 patients (258 men and 203 women, mean age of 63.1 years). The majority of patients had metastases from colorectal cancer (45.8%). In most cases (63.6%), patients had only one lung metastasis. A minimally invasive approach was chosen in 143 cases (30.4%). The mean operative time was 118 min, with no reported deaths. Morbidity most frequently consisted of prolonged air leaking and bleeding, but no re-intervention was required. Statistical analysis revealed that morbidity was significantly affected by operative time and pulmonary comorbidities, while OS was significantly affected by disease-free interval (DFI) > 24 months (p = 0.005), epithelial histology (p = 0.001) and colorectal histology (p = 0.004) during univariate analysis. No significant correlation was found between OS and age, gender, surgical approach, surgical extent, surgical device, the number of resected metastases, lesion diameter, the site of lesions and nodal involvement. Multivariate analysis of OS confirmed that only epithelial histology and DFI were risk-factors, with p-values of 0.041 and 0.031, respectively. Conclusions: Lung metastasectomy appears to be a safe procedure, with acceptable morbidity, even with a minimally invasive approach. However, it remains a local treatment of a systemic disease. In this work, passive cooling systems for the revamping of existent silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells were developed and analysed in order to mitigate the efficiency loss caused by temperature rise in the hot season. For this purpose, expanded graphite (EG) was used to stabilize a phase change material (PCM) with a melting temperature close to 53 °C in order to realize thermal management systems (TMSs) able to store heat at constant temperature during melting and releasing it in crystallization. In particular, stearic and palmitic acid mixture (PA-SA) was shape-stabilized in EG at different concentrations (10, 12 and 14 part per hundred ratio) under vacuum into a rotary evaporation apparatus followed by cold compaction; PA-SA leakage was reduced due to its intercalation between the graphite lamellae, and the thermal conductivity necessary to maximize the heat transfer to a bulk TMS was improved via powder cold compaction, which minimizes voids and creates preferential thermal conductive patterns. The composite materials, stable till 150 °C, were tested by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at 1 °C/min to precisely determine the phase transition temperatures and the enthalpic content, which was only slightly reduced from 196 J/g of the neat PCM to 169 J/g due to the very low EG fraction necessary for the stabilization. Despite only the 14:100 EG-to-PA-SA ratio, the system's thermal conductivity was enhanced 40 times with respect to the neat PCM (from 0.2 to 8.3 W/(m K), value never reached in works present in the literature), with a good convergence of the values evaluated through hot disk tests and laser flash analysis (LFA), finding correlation with both graphitic content and density. In order to completely avoid leaking with the consequent dispersion of PCM in the environment during the final application, all the samples were encapsulated in a PE-made film. The mechanical properties were evaluated with compression tests at 30 °C and 80 °C simulating a possible compressive stress deriving from the contact needed to maintain the TMS position on the rear of the PV cells. Finally, the material response was simulated by imposing thermal cycles into a climatic chamber and reproducing the three hottest and coldest days of summer 2022 of two Italian locations, Verona (Veneto, 45° N, 11° E) and Gela (Sicily, 37° N, 14° E), thus highlighting the thermal management effects with delays in temperature increase and daily peak temperature smoothing. The role of EG is strategic for the processing and the properties of the resulting composites in order to realize a proper compromise between the melting enthalpy of PCM and the thermal conductivity enhancement given by EG. Intergenerational education mobility is a key dimension of social mobility and explores the extent to which educational attainment is transmitted across generations within a society. The implications of low education mobility concern both equity (everyone should have the same opportunities) and efficiency (it would be good for the economy and society if the most gifted and deserving young people were to study and not the children of the already educated). The literature identifies several drivers that can influence the level of social mobility in general and education mobility specifically, including characteristics of educational systems, public spending, degree of urbanisation, informal frictions, and beliefs. This paper seeks to identify 'patterns of intergenerational education (im)mobility' through a cluster analysis that takes into account the level of intergenerational mobility in education and a number of variables concerning its possible drivers, considering data on 82 countries (with different levels of development). The advantage of cluster analysis lies in the possibility of identifying regularities, but avoiding reasoning 'on average', i.e., safeguarding the possibility that different social patterns may exist. The results also allow us to speculate on possible policies to increase school mobility, highlighting, among other things, the 'equalising' role played by public spending on education. The impact of climate change has become increasingly severe in forests, where droughts and strong winds on the one hand and extreme rainfall events on the other hand can damage forest ecosystems. To mitigate the effects of drought and enhance soil water retention capacity, three types of soil conditioners (SCs), labeled SC_R, SC_CG, and SC_ZZC, were developed as part of the European project ONEforest. All the conditioners are based on Xanthan gum and have different types and amounts of fillers with diverse cellulose fiber lengths. These can offer the potential to optimize the SC characteristics, e.g., water absorption, water retention, and mechanical stability. This paper focuses on the influence of fillers in the SCs on the geotechnical properties of forest soils from Ljubelj in the Alpine part of Slovenia (S1), Catalonia, northeastern Spain (S2), and Heldburg, Germany (S3). The results show an increase of 53% to 100% in the water absorption of treated soil. A less favorable impact of the SCs was found on the drained shear strength and the compressibility. The drained shear strength of untreated forest soils in a saturated state was S1 c′ = 4.4 kPa, φ′ = 33.5°; S2 c′ = 1.4 kPa, φ′ = 30.0°; and S3 c′ = 12 kPa, φ′ = 28.0°. The addition of SCs results in a reduction in the drained shear strength of saturated mixtures. The reduction depends on the dosage of added SC—whether it is a low (L) or a high (H) dosage. For instance, when the soil S1 was treated with a low dosage of the soil conditioner SC_R, it demonstrated a cohesion (c′) of 11 kPa and a friction angle (φ′) of 27.0°. However, increasing the dosage of the SC_R led to a decrease in both the cohesion and the friction angle for the same soil (c′ = 7.7 kPa, φ′ = 25.0°). Additionally, the type of soil conditioner also impacts the drained shear strength. Among the mixtures with a high dosage of the SC_R, SC_CG, or SC_ZZC, those containing the SC_CG with the longest fibers stand out, demonstrating the highest friction angle. The Mediterranean dietary pattern (MPD) has shown promise in preventing low-grade systemic inflammation (LGSI). This study tested if a high adherence to the MDP by younger and older Brazilian adults is associated with lower LGSI and investigated which Mediterranean food components may contribute to these associations. We performed a secondary study on 2015 ISA-Nutrition (290 younger adults (20–59 years old) and 293 older adults (≥60 years old)), a cross-sectional population-based study in São Paulo, SP, Brazil. The adherence to the MDP was assessed using the Mediterranean Diet Score (MedDietScore), obtained from two non-consecutive 24 h dietary recalls (24HDRs). The LGSI score (from plasma CRP, TNF-α, and adiponectin) identified the inflammatory status. Linear regression models assessed the association between LGSI and the MedDietScore. In older adults only, a high adherence to the MDP signified an 11.5% lower LGSI score. Older adults, classified with high adherence to the MDP, differed by consuming lower meat intake and full-fat dairy. Between older adults, the intake of vegetables and olive oil was inversely associated with the levels of LGSI. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous group of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) with a high unmet medical need. The diagnosis of ASD is currently based on behavior criteria, which overlooks the diversity of genetic, neurophysiological, and clinical manifestations. Failure to acknowledge such heterogeneity has hindered the development of efficient drug treatments for ASD and other NDDs. DEPI® (Databased Endophenotyping Patient Identification) is a systems biology, multi-omics, and machine learning-driven platform enabling the identification of subgroups of patients with NDDs and the development of patient-tailored treatments. In this study, we provide evidence for the validation of a first clinically and biologically defined subgroup of patients with ASD identified by DEPI, ASD Phenotype 1 (ASD-Phen1). Among 313 screened patients with idiopathic ASD, the prevalence of ASD-Phen1 was observed to be ~24% in 84 patients who qualified to be enrolled in the study. Metabolic and transcriptomic alterations differentiating patients with ASD-Phen1 were consistent with an over-activation of NF-κB and NRF2 transcription factors, as predicted by DEPI. Finally, the suitability of STP1 combination treatment to revert such observed molecular alterations in patients with ASD-Phen1 was determined. One of the factors that characterize the different countries of the Balkan area is the level of corruption which, as often stressed by scholars, may significantly influence the economic growth of its countries. However, there is still no agreement on the sign of this effect: there are theoretical arguments and empirical results in favor of a positive correlation between corruption and growth, and there are also theoretical arguments and empirical results that support the opposite view. Comparing the short-term and long-term impacts can help to explain this contradiction. In this perspective, we propose an auto-regressive distributed lag (ARDL) methodology. This approach gives both short-run and long-run results simultaneously and it is robust with small samples. The results are not homogeneous for the eight countries covered by our study (Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey), but the following theoretical intuition is confirmed: although corruption could be seen as a factor that helps economic growth by speeding up the bureaucratic processing in the short run, conversely, in the long run, the social costs associated with corruption are considerable, making it difficult to sustain the political, economic, and social burdens, thus leading to a higher levels of corruption that negatively affect the economic growth. Caries and periodontitis are the most prevalent oral diseases worldwide. Major factors contributing to the development of these oral conditions include poor oral hygiene, dental biofilm formation, high carbohydrates diet, smoking, other systemic diseases, and genetic factors. Various preventive measures have been established to mitigate the risk of caries and periodontal disease development. The present review aims to discuss the role of the probiotics Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus plantarum in the prevention and treatment of caries and periodontal diseases. The study was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines and was registered on PROSPERO. The search involved PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus and considered the PICO format. Studies were screened by two reviewers independently, and disagreements were solved by consensus with a third reviewer. Data extraction included details about the type of probiotics, strains, and purpose of administration. A total of 15 RCTs were included, of which just 1 was about tooth cavities. Overall, 87% of the included studies were good-quality papers regarding the Jadad Scale. Several studies agreed on the potential of probiotics L. rhamnosus and L. plantarum, both alone and combined, to prevent and improve clinical outcomes in caries and periodontal treatments, weaker evidence is provided for the microbiological benefit. The COVID-19 pandemic has precipitously changed the practice of transplanting fresh allografts. The safety measures adopted during the pandemic prompted the near-universal graft cryopreservation. However, the influence of cryopreserving allogeneic grafts on long-term transplant outcomes has emerged only in the most recent literature. In this review, the basic principles of cell cryopreservation are revised and the effects of cryopreservation on the different graft components are carefully reexamined. Background: In patients with Chiari 1.5 malformation (CM1.5), a more aggressive disease course and an increased association with craniovertebral junction (CVJ) anomalies has been suggested. The best management of this subgroup of patients is not clearly defined, also due to the lack of specific series elucidating this anomaly's peculiar characteristics. Methods: We evaluated a series of 33 patients (25 females, 8 males; mean age at surgery: 13 years) fulfilling the criteria for Chiari 1.5 diagnosis who underwent posterior fossa decompression and duraplasty (PFDD) between 2006 and 2021. Results: Headache was present in all children, five presented central apnea, five had dysphagia, and three had rhinolalia. Syringomyelia was present in 19 (58%) children. Twenty patients (61%) showed various CVJ anomalies, but only one child presented instability requiring arthrodesis. The mean tonsil displacement below the foramen magnum was 19.9 mm (range: 12–30), without significant correlation with the severity of symptoms. Syringomyelia recurred or was unchanged in three patients, and one needed C1–C2 fixation. The headache disappeared in 28 children (84%). Arachnoid opening and tonsil coagulation or resection was necessary for 19 children (58%). Conclusions: In our pediatric CM series, the need for tonsil resection or coagulation was higher in CM1.5 children due to a more severe crowding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In cases of SARS-CoV-2 hospitalization, despite low bacterial co-infection rates, antimicrobial use may be disproportionately high. Our aim was to quantify such usage in COVID-19 patients and identify factors linked to increased antibiotic use. We retrospectively studied patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection who were hospitalized at our institution during the pandemic. In the initial two waves of the pandemic, antimicrobial use was notably high (89% in the first wave and 92% in the second), but it decreased in subsequent waves. Elevated procalcitonin (>0.5 μg/mL) and C-reactive protein (>100 mg/L) levels were linked to antibiotic usage, while prior vaccination reduced antibiotic incidence. Antimicrobial use decreased in the pandemic, suggesting enhanced comprehension of SARS-CoV-2′s natural course. The ancient Duchy of Urbino (Marche and Emilia-Romagna Regions, Italy) is known for its spectacular landscapes linked to a unique geological history. This area owns an unexpected cultural resource, which concerns using its landscapes in art. Some great Renaissance artists, including Piero della Francesca, Raphael, and Leonardo, were so impressed by the landscapes that they reproduced them in their most famous paintings. This paper summarizes research concerned with their identification, employing a multidisciplinary method that has enabled the recognition of many morphologies. This contribution provides the scientific community with information on the methodology and regional and national projects developed in this area to enhance its cultural landscapes. Starting from the geological description of the territory, the research focuses on famous works by three great Renaissance artists, providing evidence and morphological details related to the recognition of places: "Nativity" by Piero della Francesca, "Madonna Litta" by Leonardo da Vinci, and "Knight's Dream" by Raphael. Finally, it is proposed to make these landscapes a timeless resource through their inclusion in UNESCO's cultural heritage. This contribution is addressed to representatives of the administration, conservation, and enhancement of artistic and landscape heritage to stimulate new perspectives for research, education, and tourism within the cultural heritage of this area. Introduction: Procalcitonin and presepsin have been suggested to be able to discriminate bacterial and viral infections, also in children. This scoping review aims to better explore the available evidence around the potential role of these biomarkers in the subgroup of children with respiratory infectious diseases. Methods: We performed a systematic scoping review of studies published until March 2023 in the following bibliographic databases: PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane and SCOPUS. Results: In children with bacterial infection, procalcitonin values ranged from 0.5 ng/mL to 8.31 ng/dL, while in those hospitalized in an intensive care unit ranged from 0.6 ng/dL to 452.8 ng/dL with PCR from 2 ng/dL to 51.7 ng/dL. In children with viral infections, procalcitonin value values ranged from 0.2 ng/dL to 0.84 ng/dL, while in those hospitalized in an intensive care unit ranged from 0.61 ng/dL to 46.6 ng/dL. No studies on presepsin in children with respiratory infections were retrieved. Conclusions: Although the available literature is highly heterogeneous, evidence does not suggest a role of procalcitonin in accurately differentiating bacterial and viral infections in children with respiratory infections. Simple Summary: The role of gender in oncology is an issue that is starting to be recognized as being of extreme importance in the last few years. While breast cancer is commonly perceived as a female-only disease, it does also occur in men, although rarely, thus opening relevant gender issues. Breast cancer in men is much less studied, with most knowledge coming from research on female breast cancer; however, several crucial differences have begun to be discovered between male and female patients. For example, the gender-specific impact and magnitude of risks conferred by breast cancer genetic risk factors are emerging, and they should be taken into consideration for a proper personalized clinical management. Overall, addressing all the challenges and the open issues regarding breast cancer genetic predisposition, including gender, will have an important clinical impact on the management of patients of both sexes. Among neoplastic diseases, breast cancer (BC) is one of the most influenced by gender. Despite common misconceptions associating BC as a women-only disease, BC can also occur in men. Additionally, transgender individuals may also experience BC. Genetic risk factors play a relevant role in BC predisposition, with important implications in precision prevention and treatment. The genetic architecture of BC susceptibility is similar in women and men, with high-, moderate-, and low-penetrance risk variants; however, some sex-specific features have emerged. Inherited high-penetrance pathogenic variants (PVs) in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the strongest BC genetic risk factor. BRCA1 and BRCA2 PVs are more commonly associated with increased risk of female and male BC, respectively. Notably, BRCA-associated BCs are characterized by sex-specific pathologic features. Recently, next-generation sequencing technologies have helped to provide more insights on the role of moderate-penetrance BC risk variants, particularly in PALB2, CHEK2, and ATM genes, while international collaborative genome-wide association studies have contributed evidence on common low-penetrance BC risk variants, on their combined effect in polygenic models, and on their role as risk modulators in BRCA1/2 PV carriers. Overall, all these studies suggested that the genetic basis of male BC, although similar, may differ from female BC. Evaluating the genetic component of male BC as a distinct entity from female BC is the first step to improve both personalized risk assessment and therapeutic choices of patients of both sexes in order to reach gender equality in BC care. In this review, we summarize the latest research in the field of BC genetic predisposition with a particular focus on similarities and differences in male and female BC, and we also discuss the implications, challenges, and open issues that surround the establishment of a gender-oriented clinical management for BC. Simple Summary: In the evolving landscape of breast cancer care, recognizing HER2-low expression as a target for anti-HER2 therapies has revolutionized treatment approaches. This retrospective, observational, multicenter study, focusing on male breast cancer (MBC), aimed to characterize the HER2-low subtype. Of the 144 MBCs analyzed, 54.9% were HER2-0, 27.1% HER2-low, and 18% HER2-positive. Specifically, among hormone receptor-positive MBCs, 34.8% were HER2-low. Notably, the prevalence of HER2-low in MBC appears slightly lower than in females. HER2-low MBCs showed a higher likelihood of positive lymph node involvement. About 13% of HER2-low MBCs carried germline BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants, predominantly in BRCA2. Overall, our data derived from the largest MBC series to our knowledge, also characterized for germline pathogenic variants, support the recognition of the emerging category of HER2-low breast cancer. This study emphasizes the need for tailored understanding of HER2-low expression in MBC and underscores potential implications for refining therapeutic approaches based on distinct molecular profiles. In the field of breast cancer care, a significant breakthrough has occurred with the recognition of HER2-low expression as a target for novel anti-HER2 antibody–drug conjugates (ADC). This discovery is reshaping the treatment landscape, challenging previous perceptions that considered HER2-low as clinically insignificant. The ability to target HER2-low expression is expected to have substantial clinical implications, irrespective of gender, including in cases of male breast cancer (MBC). However, an estimate of the prevalence of the HER2-low subtype in MBC is missing. This retrospective, observational, multicenter study was aimed at characterizing the HER2-low subtype in MBC. For the purpose of this study, the three-tiered categorization of HER2 (HER2-0, HER2-low, and HER2-positive) was used to reclassify the HER2-negative group into HER-0 or HER2-low subtypes. In the whole series of 144 invasive MBCs, 79 (54.9%) were HER2-0 (IHC scores of 0), 39 (27.1%) HER2-low (IHC scores of 1+/2+ with negative ISH), and 26 (18.0%) HER2-positive (IHC scores of 3+/2+ with positive ISH). Specifically, among hormone receptor-positive (HR+) HER2-negative invasive MBCs, 34.8% were HER2-low and 65.2% HER2-0. Compared with HER2-0, HER2-low subtype was associated with a positive lymph node involvement (p = 0.01). Other pathologic characteristics including histology, staging, and grading did not show notable variations between the two subtypes. The presence of germline BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) did not significantly differ between HER2-0 and HER2-low MBCs. However, about 13% of HER2-low MBCs had germline PVs in BRCA1/2 genes, mainly BRCA2, a clinically relevant observation in the context of combined target therapy. Overall, our data, which focused on the largest gender-specific breast cancer series, to our knowledge, confirm that the emerging three-tiered categorization of HER2 (HER2-0, HER2-low, and HER2-positive) can also be considered in MBC, to mitigate both the gender gap and the underrepresentation of males in clinical trials. The extended cleavage specificities of two hematopoietic serine proteases originating from the ray-finned fish, the spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus), have been characterized using substrate phage display. The preference for particular amino acids at and surrounding the cleavage site was further validated using a panel of recombinant substrates. For one of the enzymes, the gar granzyme G, a strict preference for the aromatic amino acid Tyr was observed at the cleavable P1 position. Using a set of recombinant substrates showed that the gar granzyme G had a high selectivity for Tyr but a lower activity for cleaving after Phe but not after Trp. Instead, the second enzyme, gar DDN1, showed a high preference for Leu in the P1 position of substrates. This latter enzyme also showed a high preference for Pro in the P2 position and Arg in both P4 and P5 positions. The selectivity for the two Arg residues in positions P4 and P5 suggests a highly specific substrate selectivity of this enzyme. The screening of the gar proteome with the consensus sequences obtained by substrate phage display for these two proteases resulted in a very diverse set of potential targets. Due to this diversity, a clear candidate for a specific immune function of these two enzymes cannot yet be identified. Antisera developed against the recombinant gar enzymes were used to study their tissue distribution. Tissue sections from juvenile fish showed the expression of both proteases in cells in Peyer's patch-like structures in the intestinal region, indicating they may be expressed in T or NK cells. However, due to the lack of antibodies to specific surface markers in the gar, it has not been possible to specify the exact cellular origin. A marked difference in abundance was observed for the two proteases where gar DDN1 was expressed at higher levels than gar granzyme G. The frequency and the accumulation of medium–small flood events can cause severe impacts. In a climate change context, real-time monitoring and a fast risk assessment are needed to support the post-disaster phases. The present work presents a novel methodology that leverages the potential of earth observation data to produce a proof-of-concept for flood vulnerability assessment, serving as the basis for a Map Operational Service for the Lombardy region. The proof-of-concept is related to both flood hazard estimation and vulnerability assessment, considering the evaluation of the potentialities of the synthetic aperture radar data when used to feed a downstream service. Using the city of Pavia (Italy), which was affected by a flood event in November 2019, as a case study, we present an integrated flood impact approach that includes a combination of social and physical parameters. The results contribute to a processing chain designed as a pre-operational service where each data analytic retrieves thematic products to support the exposure and damage estimates based on earth observation-derived hazard products for emergency and recovery responses. Three different satellites covered more than 40 h of the flood's evolution, supporting the great potential of the multi-sensor approach. Therefore, different sensor configurations in terms of spectral bands (X and C bands) and resolutions (from 10 to 1 m) provide a near real-time view of the event. Comparing the results obtained through the three hazard scenarios, a final social and physical Integrated Impact Index is obtained. The added value information leads to the determination of hotspots with which to prioritize effective interventions during emergency and recovery phases, crucial for capturing inherent conditions that allow communities to absorb impacts and cope with a damaging flood event. Diabetes can trigger an increase in cytokine levels leading to the production of C-reactive protein and fibrinogen. These molecules promote subclinical inflammation, causing the expression of adhesive molecules and endothelial dysfunction. Despite the lack of a comprehensive panel for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for interleukins associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), understanding the inflammatory role of SNPs is crucial because periodontitis, the sixth complication of diabetes, is influenced via these genetic variations. This review focuses on the interleukin levels in T1DM patients with and without periodontitis, with a particular focus on childhood and on SNPs when reported. A search of PubMed and Scopus identified 21 relevant studies from the past five years. Several ILs were analyzed, emphasizing that T1DM still needs to be thoroughly explored regarding an IL polymorphisms panel; however, the last five years have led to the increased independence of this condition, causing autonomous inflammatory effects, which require further investigation. The periodontitis and T1DM association in children and adolescents represents a severe gap in the literature that should be filled; this scarce presence of studies serves as motivation for further clinical research. Introduction: Fever is among the most common reason for medical assessment and antibiotic prescription in practice. The aim of this study was to evaluate positive and negative predictive values of rapid nasopharyngeal swabs for respiratory pathogens to discriminate viral from bacterial infections. Methods: We prospectively tested children with signs and/or symptoms of infections (e.g., fever, cough, wheezing, suspected urinary tract infection) admitted to a paediatric department. Following discharge, clinical phenotypes were assigned defining a cohort of children having probable/certain viral infection, probable/certain bacterial infection, other inflammatory conditions or healthy controls. Results: In this study, 190 children were enrolled (50.5% females, median age 30.5 (8–86) months). In total, 102 patients (53.7%) were affected by respiratory viral infections, 16 (8.4%) by bacterial infections, 29 (15.3%) were healthy controls and 43 (22.6%) were affected by another pathological condition manifested with fever. In total, 84.3% of patients classified as viral infection tested positive for viruses, compared with 18.8% of patients with bacterial infection (p < 0.001), 18.6% of patients with other condition (p < 0.001) and 17.2% of control patients (p < 0.001). The positive predictive value of NPSs in the diagnosis of viral infection was 88.6% and the negative predictive value was 75.0%. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that rapid NPS tests for respiratory viruses are a useful tool to confirm viral infections in children with fever and improve antibiotic use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the discovery of graphene, there has been a wide range of the literature dealing with its versatile structure and easy binding of biomolecules as well as its large loading capacity. In the emerging field of immunotherapy, graphene and its derivatives have potential uses as drug delivery platforms directly into tumour sites or as adjuvants in cancer vaccines, as they are internalized by monocytes which in turn may activate adaptive anti-tumoral immune responses. In this study, we expose cells of the innate immune system and a human acute monocytic leukemia cell line (THP-1) to low doses of small-sized GO nanosheets functionalized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC), to study their acute response after internalization. We show by flow cytometry, uptake in cells of GO-BSA-FITC reaches 80% and cell viability and ROS production are both unaffected by exposure to nanoparticles. On the contrary, GO-BSA nanosheets seem to have an inhibitory effect on ROS production, probably due to their antioxidant properties. We also provided results on chemotaxis of macrophages derived from peripheral blood monocytes treated with GO-BSA. In conclusion, we showed the size of nanosheets, the concentration used and the degree of functionalization were important factors for biocompatibility of GO in immune cells. Its low cytotoxicity and high adaptability to the cells of the innate immune system make it a good candidate for deployment in immunotherapy, in particular for delivering protein antigens to monocytes which activate adaptive immunity. Understanding crop types and their annual cycles is key to managing natural resources, especially when the pressures on these resources are attributable to climate change and social, environmental, and economic policies. In recent years, the space sector's development, with programs such as Copernicus, has enabled a greater availability of satellite data. This study uses a multi-sensor approach to retrieve crop information by developing a Proof of Concept for the integration of high-resolution SAR imagery and optical data. The main goal is to develop a pre-automatized processing chain that explores the temporal dimension of different crop. Results are related to the advantage of using a multi-sensor approach to retrieve vegetation biomass and vertical structure for the identification of phenological stages and different crops. The novelty consists of investigating the multi-temporal pattern of radiometric indices and radar backscatter to detect the different phenological stages of each crop, identifying the Day of the Year (DoY) in which the classes showed greater separability. The current study could be considered a benchmark for the exploitation of future multi-sensor missions in downstream services for the agricultural sector, strengthening the evolution of Copernicus services. We aimed to investigate if children with their first UTI and a concomitant positive blood culture have a higher risk of abnormalities. We performed a retrospective study of children younger than 18 years of age with their first UTI. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate if positive blood cultures are associated with urinary abnormalities. After the screening process, we considered the enrolled 161 children with UTIs. The median age was three months, and 83 were females (43.2%). In multivariate analysis, age (p = 0.001, 95% CI 1.005–1.020), the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or unusual germs in urine cultures (p = 0.002, 95% CI 2.18–30.36) and the positivity of blood cultures (p = 0.001, 95% CI 2.23–18.98) were significantly associated with urinary abnormalities. A model based on these parameters has an AUC of 0.7168 to predict urinary malformations (p = 0.0315). Conclusions include how greater age, a positive blood culture and the presence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa or unusual germs in urine culture in children hospitalised for their first episode of a UTI are factors associated with a significantly higher risk of urinary abnormalities. ZnO thin films with a thickness of 300 nm were deposited on Si and Al2O3 substrates using an electron beam evaporation technique with the aim of testing them as low cost and low power consumption gas sensors for ozone (O3). Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to characterize the film surface morphology and quantify the roughness and grain size, recognized as the primary parameters influencing the gas sensitivity due to their direct impact on the effective sensing area. The crystalline structure and elemental composition were studied through Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Gas tests were conducted at room temperature and zero-bias voltage to assess the sensitivity and response as a function of time of the films to O3 pollutant. The results indicate that the films deposited on Al2O3 exhibit promising characteristics, such as high sensitivity and a very short response time (<2 s) to the gas concentration. In recent years, the boost in the development of hardware and software resources for building virtual reality environments has fuelled the development of tools to support training in different disciplines. The purpose of this work is to discuss a complete methodology and the supporting algorithms to develop a virtual reality environment to train the use of a sensorized upper-limb prosthesis targeted at amputees. The environment is based on the definition of a digital twin of a virtual prosthesis, able to communicate with the sensors worn by the user and reproduce its dynamic behaviour and the interaction with virtual objects. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different types of natural cellulose-based fillers on the properties of Xanthan gum (XG) in order to develop novel bio-based soil conditioners (SCs) that could be used in forestry and agricultural applications. Rheological measurements highlighted that SCs with cellulose fillers characterized by a high aspect ratio and low oxide ash content exhibited an average increase of 21% in yield stress compared to neat Xanthan gum. The presence of cellulose fillers in the composites resulted in a slower water release than that of neat XG, limiting the volumetric shrinkage during the drying process. Furthermore, an analysis of the water absorption and water retention capacity of soils treated with the different SCs was carried out, demonstrating that the addition of 1.8 wt.% of SC with optimized composition to the soil led to an increase in water absorption capacity from 34% up to 69%. From the soil water retention curves, it was observed that the addition of SCs significantly increased the amount of water effectively available for plants in the area between field capacity and permanent wilting point (100–1000 kPa). From practical experiments on grass growth, it was observed that these SCs improved the water regulation of the soil, thus increasing the probability of plant survival under drought conditions. Featured Application: Use of enzymatic gels to clean wall paintings. Application of multispectral imaging to evaluate the effect of the cleaning operations on artwork surfaces. A 17th century wall painting, representing the Virgin between two Saints, in a noble Italian renaissance palace, the Palazzo Gallo in Bagnaia (Viterbo, Italy), was restored in 2021 in the context of a wider restoration campaign involving the main room of the palace built by cardinal Sansoni Riario. Diagnostic analyses performed using traditional characterization techniques (optical microscopy on micro-stratigraphic sections, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) provided the identification of both the original painting and its restoration materials, while imaging investigations using the ultraviolet fluorescence photography, false color images and multispectral mapping provided by the hypercolorimetric multispectral imaging (HMI) technique enabled the evaluation of the state of conservation, the location of restoration interventions and supported the monitoring of the cleaning procedure. An altered protective Paraloid®-based coating dating from the early 2000s had to be removed due to the unpleasant glossy finishing it had given to the painted surface, making the scene barely readable. To pursue a restoration protocol based on environmental sustainability and green chemistry, enzyme-based gels marketed by the Nasier-Brenta© and CTS© companies were tested in different protocols for the cleaning of the mixture (known as beverone) covering the painting. Although some interesting results were observed, the enzymatic cleaning had limited effectiveness, and was more timing-consuming than was reasonable. Electric mobility is one of the ways of containing greenhouse gas and local pollutants emissions in urban areas. Nevertheless, the massive introduction of battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs) is introducing some concerns related to their energy demand. Modelling vehicle usage and charging behavior is essential for charge demand forecasting and energy consumption estimation. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how the charging decisions of EV owners are influenced by different factors, ranging from the charging infrastructure characteristics to the users' profiles. This review examines the approaches used to investigate charging behavior and highlights the trends and differences between the results, remarking on any gaps worthy of further investigation. In 2019, "Nutrition Therapy for Adults with Diabetes or Prediabetes: A Consensus Report" was published. This consensus report, however, did not provide an easy way to illustrate to subjects with prediabetes (SwPs) how to follow a correct dietary approach. The purpose of this review is to evaluate current evidence on optimum dietary treatment of SwPs and to provide a food pyramid for this population. The pyramid built shows that everyday consumption should consist of: whole-grain bread or potatoes eaten with their skins (for fiber and magnesium) and low glycemic index carbohydrates (GI < 55%) (three portions); fruit and vegetables (5 portions), in particular, green leafy vegetables (for fiber, magnesium, and polyphenols); EVO oil (almost 8 g); nuts (30 g, in particular, pistachios and almonds); three portions of dairy products (milk/yogurt: 300–400 g/day); mineral water (almost 1, 5 L/day for calcium intake); one glass of wine (125 mL); and three cups of coffee. Weekly portions should include fish (four portions), white meat (two portions), protein plant-based food (four portions), eggs (egg portions), and red/processed meats (once/week). At the top of the pyramid, there are two pennants: a green one means that SwPs need some personalized supplementation (if daily requirements cannot be satisfied through diet, vitamin D, omega-3, and vitamin B supplements), and a red one means there are some foods and factors that are banned (simple sugar, refined carbohydrates, and a sedentary lifestyle). Three to four times a week of aerobic and resistance exercises must be performed for 30–40 min. Ternary blended cements, such as limestone calcined clay cement (LC3), represent a type of strategic binder for the mitigation of environmental impacts associated with cement production. These are estimated to reduce CO2 emissions by about 40% compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In this paper, we explore the possibility of producing such ternary blends by utilizing secondary raw materials that may be locally available. Specifically, the primary limestone that is commonly used in LC3 is herein substituted with quarry dust obtained by sourcing "kunkur", a carbonate-rich sedimentary rock (also known as caliche) that can be locally utilized for the production of ordinary OPC clinker. To optimize the blending proportions of ternary cement consisting of OPC, calcined clay, and kunkur fines, a "design of experiment" (DoE) approach was implemented with the goal of exploring the possibility of reducing the amount of the OPC fraction to values lower than 50%. The properties of the formulated blends were assessed by a combination of techniques that comprise mechanical strength testing, XRD time-dependent quantitative phase analysis, and SEM–EDS microstructural and microchemical analyses. The results suggest that ternary blended cement based on kunkur fines forms hydration products, such as hemicarboaluminates, which are also observed in LC3. This shows that such waste materials can potentially be used in sustainable cement blends; however, the presence of kaolinite in the kunkur fines seems to affect their strength development when compared to both OPC and conventional LC3.
