Simple Summary: Glioblastoma is known to be highly immunosuppressive in nature. Plasmacytoid dendritic cell infiltration is known to be associated with glioblastoma progression and promotes tumor immunosuppression. We provide important details to indicate that glioblastoma cell-secreted CCL21 plays a dual role both in recruiting plasmacytoid dendritic cells via binding to CCR7 and activating plasmacytoid dendritic cells through the CCR7/ACKR4—β-arrestin/CIITA pathway. Our result also provides a rationale to therapeutically target CCL21 as a potential novel treatment for glioblastoma. Dendritic cells (DCs) are professional antigen-presenting cells that are traditionally divided into two distinct subsets: myeloid DCs (mDCs) and plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs). pDCs are known for their ability to secrete large amounts of cytokine type I interferons (IFN- α). In our previous work, we have demonstrated that pDC infiltration promotes glioblastoma (GBM) tumor immunosuppression through decreased IFN-α secretion via TLR-9 signaling and increased suppressive function of regulatory T cells (Tregs) via increased IL-10 secretion, resulting in poor overall outcomes in mouse models of GBM. Further dissecting the overall mechanism of pDC-mediated GBM immunosuppression, in this study, we identified CCL21 as highly upregulated by multiple GBM cell lines, which recruit pDCs to tumor sites via CCL21-CCR7 signaling. Furthermore, pDCs are activated by CCL21 in the GBM microenvironment through intracellular signaling of β-arrestin and CIITA. Finally, we found that CCL21-treated pDCs directly suppress CD8+ T cell proliferation without affecting regulatory T cells (Tregs) differentiation, which is considered the canonical pathway of immunotolerant regulation. Taken together, our results show that pDCs play a multifaced role in GBM immunosuppression, and CCL21 could be a novel therapeutic target in GBM to overcome pDC-mediated immunosuppression. Background: Bleomycin is commonly used to treat advanced testicular cancer and can be associated with severe pulmonary toxicity. The primary objective of the present study was to describe the use of pulmonary function tests (pfts) and chest imaging before, during, and after treatment with bleomycin. Methods: To identify all incident cases of testicular cancer treated with bleomycin-based chemotherapy in the Canadian province of Ontario during 2005-2010, the Ontario Cancer Registry was linked with chemotherapy treat-ment records. Health administrative databases were used to describe use of pfts, chest imaging, and physician visits for respiratory complaints. Results: Of 394 patients treated with orchiectomy and chemotherapy who received at least 1 dose of bleomycin, 93% had complete chemotherapy records available. In the 4 weeks before, during, and within 2 years after finishing bleomycin-based chemotherapy, pfts were performed in 17%, 17%, and 29% of patients respectively. Chest imaging was performed in 68%, 62%, and 98% of patients in the same time periods. In the 2 years after bleomycin-based chemotherapy, 23% of treated patients had a physician visit for respiratory symptoms. That rate was substantially higher for men with greater exposure to bleomycin: 40% (24 of 60) for 10-12 doses bleomycin compared with 21% (53 of 250) for 7-9 doses and with 14% (8 of 58) for 1-6 doses (p = 0.002). Conclusions: Quality improvement initiatives are needed to increase baseline rates of chest imaging within 4 weeks of starting chemotherapy for testicular cancer; to understand why such a high proportion of men have chest imaging during bleomycin-based chemotherapy; and to mitigate the excess pulmonary toxicity seen with increasing exposure to bleomycin. Purpose We explored the patterns of sentinel node metastasis and investigated the prognostic value of sentinel node necrosis (SNN) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods This retrospective study enrolled 252 patients at our institution who had metastatic lymph nodes from biopsy-confirmed NPC and who were treated with definitive radiation therapy, with or without chemotherapy. All participants underwent MRI before treatment, and the resulting images were reviewed to evaluate lymph node status. The patients were divided into SNN and NON-SNN groups. Overall survival (OS), tumour-free survival (TFS), regional relapse--free survival (RRFS), and distant metastasis--free survival (DMFS) were calculated by the Kaplan--Meier method, and differences were compared using the log-rank test. Factors predictive of outcome were determined by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results Of the 252 patients, 189 (75%) had retropharyngeal lymph node metastasis, and 189 (75%) had level IIA or IIB lymph node necrosis. The incidence of SNN was 43.4% (91 of 210 patients with lymph node metastasis or necrosis, or both). After a median follow-up of 54 months, the 5-year rates of OS, TFS, RRFS, and DMFS in the SNN and NON-SNN groups were, respectively, 79.4% and 95.3%, 73.5% and 93.3%, 80.4% and 96.6%, and 75.5% and 95.3% (all p < 0.01). Age greater than 40 years, SNN, T stage, and N stage were significant independent negative prognostic factors for OS, TFS, RRFS, AND DMFS. Conclusions Metastatic retropharyngeal lymph nodes and necrotic level ii nodes both seem to act as sentinels. Sentinel node necrosis is an negative prognostic factor in patients with NPC. Background Guidelines recommend that 12 or more lymph nodes (LNS) be evaluated during surgical resection of colon cancer. Here, we report ln yield and its association with survival in routine practice. Methods Electronic records of treatment were linked to the population-based Ontario Cancer Registry to identify all patients with colon cancer treated during 2002-2008. The study population (n = 5508) included a 25% random sample of patients with stage ii or iii disease. Modified Poisson regression was used to identify factors associated with ln yield; Cox models were used to explore the association between ln yield and overall (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Results During 2002-2008, median ln yield increased to 17 from 11 nodes (p < 0.001), and the proportion of patients with 12 or more nodes evaluated increased to 86% from 45% (p < 0.001). Lymph node positivity did not change over time (to 53% from 54%, p = 0.357). Greater ln yield was associated with younger age (p < 0.001), less comorbidity (p = 0.004), higher socioeconomic status (p = 0.001), right-sided tumours (p < 0.001), and higher hospital volume (p < 0.001). In adjusted analyses, a ln yield of less than 12 nodes was associated with inferior os and css for stages ii and iii disease [stage ii os hazard ratio (HR): 1.36; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.19 to 1.56; stage ii css hr: 1.52; 95% CI: 1.26 to 1.83; and stage III os HR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.30 to 1.61; stage III CSS HR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.36 to 1.75]. Conclusions Despite a temporal increase in ln yield, the proportion of cases with ln positivity has not changed. Lymph node yield is associated with survival in patients with stages ii and iii colon cancer. The association between ln yield and survival is unlikely to be a result of stage migration. Introduction The incidence of colon cancer varies by sex. Whether women and men show differences in extent of disease, treatment, and outcomes is not well described. We used a large population-based cohort to evaluate sex differences in colon cancer. Methods Using the Ontario Cancer Registry, all cases of colon cancer treated with surgery in Ontario during 2002-2008 were identified. Electronic records of treatment identified use of surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy. Pathology reports for a random 25% sample of all cases were obtained, and disease characteristics, treatment, and outcomes in women and men were compared. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify factors associated with overall (os) and cancer-specific survival (css). Results The study population included 7249 patients who underwent resection of colon cancer; 49% (n = 3556) were women. Stage of disease and histologic grade did not vary by sex. Compared with men, women were more likely to have right-sided disease (55% vs. 44%, p. 0.001). Surgical procedure and lymph node yield did not differ by sex. Adjuvant chemotherapy was delivered to 18% of patients with stage ii and 64% of patients with stage iii disease; when adjusted for patient- and disease-related factors, use of adjuvant chemotherapy was similar for women and men [relative risk: 0.99; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.94 to 1.03]. Adjusted analyses demonstrated that os [hazard ratio (HR): 0.80; 95% ci: 0.75 to 0.86] and css (HR: 0.82; 95% ci: 0.76 to 0.90) were superior for women compared with men. Conclusions Long-term survival after colon cancer is significantly better for women than for men, which is not explained by any substantial differences in extent of disease or treatment delivered. Purpose The relative distribution of research output across cancer sites is not well described. Here, we evaluate whether the volume of published research is proportional to the public health burden of individual cancers. We also explore whether research output is proportional to research funding. Methods Statistics from the Canadian and American cancer societies were used to identify the top ten causes of cancer death in 2013. All journal articles and clinical trials published in 2013 by Canadian or U.S. authors for those cancers were identified. Total research funding in Canada by cancer site was obtained from the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation coefficients were used to describe the relationship between research output, cancer mortality, and research funding. Results We identified 19,361 publications and 2661 clinical trials. The proportion of publications and clinical trials was substantially lower than the proportion of deaths for lung (41% deaths, 15% publications, 16% clinical trials), colorectal (14%, 7%, 6%), pancreatic (10%, 7%, 5%), and gastroesophageal (7%, 5%, 3%) cancers. Conversely, research output was substantially greater than the proportion of deaths for breast cancer (10% deaths, 29% publications, 30% clinical trials) and prostate cancer (8%, 15%, 17%). We observed a stronger correlation between research output and funding (publications r = 0.894, p < 0.001; clinical trials r = 0.923, p < 0.001) than between research output and cancer mortality (r = 0.363, p = 0.303; r = 0.340, p = 0.337). Functional, tumor-specific CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes drive the adaptive immune response to cancer. Thus, induction of their activity is the ultimate aim of all immunotherapies. Success of anti-tumor immunotherapy is precluded by marked immunosuppression in the tumor microenvironment (TME) leading to CD8+ effector T cell dysfunction. Among the many facets of CD8+ T cell dysfunction that have been recognized—tolerance, anergy, exhaustion, and senescence—CD8+ T cell senescence is incompletely understood. Naïve CD8+ T cells require three essential signals for activation, differentiation, and survival through T-cell receptor, costimulatory receptors, and cytokine receptors. Downregulation of costimulatory molecule CD28 is a hallmark of senescent T cells and increased CD8+CD28− senescent populations with heterogeneous roles have been observed in multiple solid and hematogenous tumors. T cell senescence can be induced by several factors including aging, telomere damage, tumor-associated stress, and regulatory T (Treg) cells. Tumor-induced T cell senescence is yet another mechanism that enables tumor cell resistance to immunotherapy. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of CD8+CD28− senescent T cell population, their origin, their function in immunology and pathologic conditions, including TME and their implication for immunotherapy. Intensively farmed animals such as pigs inevitably experience a certain degree of psychological stress, which leads to a reduction in production performance. Mental health traits are currently difficult to measure, resulting in a gap in understanding their genetic basis. To address this challenge, we propose a computational framework called mental health of animals (MeHA), capable of revealing genes related to animal mental health traits. Using MeHA, we identified 109 candidate genes associated with pig mental health and discovered their intricate connections with critical functions, such as memory, cognition, and neural development, which are essential components of mental health and cognitive performance. Importantly, our findings provide evidence of the potential impact of these genes on economically important traits, including meat quality and piglet survival. This research underscores the importance of genetic studies in enhancing our understanding of animal behavior and cognition, as well as promoting agricultural practices. By applying our approach to study the genetic basis of mental health in pigs as a case, we confirmed that our framework is an effective way to reveal genetic factors affecting animal mental health traits, which contributes to animal welfare and has potential implications for understanding human mental disorders.

This study focuses on three different regions of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis): an inner layer (IB), middle layer (MB), and outer layer (OB), to comprehensively characterize the structural features, chemical composition (ash, extractives and lignin contents), and the lignin monomeric composition as determined by analytical pyrolysis. The results show that bamboo presents a gradient structure. From the IB to OB, the vascular bundle density and fiber sheath ratio increase, the porosity decreases (from 45.92% to 18.14%), and the vascular bundle diameter-chord ratio increases (from 0.85 to 1.48). In terms of chemical composition, the ash, extractives, and acid-soluble lignin content gradually decrease from IB to OB. The holocellulose content follows the trend: MB (66.3%) > OB (65.9%) > IB (62.8%), while the acid-insoluble lignin content exhibits the opposite trend: IB (22.6%) > OB (17.8%) > MB (17.7%). Pyrolysis products reveal the diversity of carbohydrates and lignin derivatives, with a lignin monomeric composition rich in syringyl and guaiacyl units and lower amounts of H-units: the IB has an H:G:S relation of 18:26:55, while 15:27:58 is the ratio for the MB and 15:40:45 for the OB; S/G ratio values were, respectively, 1.22, 1.46, and 0.99. A comprehensive analysis highlights significant gradient variations in the structure and chemistry of bamboo, providing robust support for the classification and refinement methods of bamboo residues for potential applications.

A balanced inflammatory response is crucial for the organism to defend against external infections, however, an exaggerated response may lead to detrimental effects, including tissue damage and even the onset of disease. Therefore, anti-inflammatory drugs are essential for the rational control of inflammation. In this study, we found that a previously screened peptide TaY (KEKKEVVEYGPSSYGYG) was able to inhibit the LPS-induced RAW264.7 inflammatory response by decreasing a series of proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α, IL-6, and nitric oxide (NO). To elucidate the underlying mechanism, we conducted further investigations. Western blot analysis showed that TaY reduced the phosphorylation of key proteins (IKK-α/β, IκB-α,NF-κB (P65)) in the TLR4-NF-κB signaling pathway and inhibited the inflammatory response. Furthermore, molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations suggested that TaY binds to the hydrophobic pocket of MD2 through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions, potentially competing with LPS for MD2 binding. Collectively, TaY is a promising candidate for the development of novel therapeutic strategies against inflammatory disorders.

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are essential for exhibiting single-transverse-mode output characteristics, which are critical for applications in quantum sensing, optical interconnection, and laser printing. In this study, we achieved stable single-transverse-mode lasing using extended-2λ-cavity with an oxide aperture diameter of 7.08 μm. The device demonstrated a high output power of 6.8 mW and a narrow linewidth of 49.8 MHz at room temperature. Additionally, it maintained stable single-mode emission at 794.8 nm and achieved a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) exceeding 40 dB within the temperature range of 25 °C~85 °C, thereby meeting the requirements of 87 Rb atom quantum sensors. The fabricated device obtained high-power and narrow linewidth single-transverse-mode operation by a monolithic extended cavity without introducing additional processing procedures, which is expected to promote the commercial viability of VCSELs in quantum sensing.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) exhibit rat aryl hydrocarbon receptor (rAhR) activities, leading to diverse biological or toxic effects. In this study, the key amino residues and molecular interactions that govern the rAhR activity of PACs were investigated using in silico strategies. The homology model of rAhR was first docked with 90 PACs to yield complexes, and the results of the molecular dynamics simulations of 16 typical complexes showed that the binding energies of the complexes range from -7.37 to -26.39 kcal/mol. The major contribution to the molecular interaction comes from van der Waals forces, and Pro295 and Arg316 become the key residues involved in most complexes. Two QSAR models were further developed to predict the rAhR activity of PACs (in terms of log IEQ for PACs without halogen substitutions and log%-TCDD-max for halogenated PACs). Both models have good predictive ability, robustness, and extrapolation ability. Molecular polarizability, electronegativity, size, and nucleophilicity are identified as the important factors affecting the rAhR activity of PACs. The developed models could be employed to predict the rAhR activity of other reactive PACs. This work provides insight into the mechanisms and interactions of the rAhR activity of PACs and assists in the assessment of their fate and risk in organisms.

Chinese cabbage ( Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis ) ranks among the most cultivated and consumed vegetables in China. A major threat to its production is Plasmodiophora brassicae, which causes large root tumors, obstructing nutrient and water absorption and resulting in plant withering. This study used a widely targeted metabolome technique to identify resistance-related metabolites in resistant (DH40R) and susceptible (DH199S) Chinese cabbage varieties after inoculation with P. brassicae . This study analyzed disease-related metabolites during different periods, identifying 257 metabolites linked to resistance, enriched in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway, and 248 metabolites linked to susceptibility, enriched in the arachidonic acid metabolism pathway. Key metabolites and genes in the phenylpropanoid pathway were upregulated at 5 days post-inoculation (DPI), suggesting their role in disease resistance. In the arachidonic acid pathway, linoleic acid and gamma-linolenic acid were upregulated at 5 and 22 DPI in resistant plants, while arachidonic acid was upregulated at 22 DPI in susceptible plants, leading to the conclusion that arachidonic acid may be a response substance in susceptible plants after inoculation. Many genes enriched in these pathways were differentially expressed in DH40R and DH199S. The research provided insights into the defense mechanisms of Chinese cabbage against P. brassicae through combined metabolome and transcriptome analysis.

γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and rare ginsenosides are good antioxidant and anti-fatigue active components that can be enriched via probiotic fermentation. In this study, ginseng and germinated brown rice were used as raw materials to produce six fermented purees using fermentation and non-fermentation technology. We tested the chemical composition of the purees and found that the content of GABA and rare ginsenoside (Rh 4 , Rg 3 , and CK) in the puree made of ginseng and germinated brown rice (FGB) increased significantly after fermentation. The antioxidant activity of the six purees was determined using cell-free experiments, and it was found that FGB had better ferric-ion-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging rates, exhibiting better antioxidant effects. We then evaluated the antioxidant effect of FGB in HepG 2 cells induced by H 2 O 2 and found that FGB can reduce the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HepG 2 cells and increase the membrane potential level, thereby improving oxidative damage in these cells. In vivo experiments also showed that FGB has good antioxidant and anti-fatigue activities, which can prolong the exhaustive swimming time of mice and reduce the accumulation of metabolites, and is accompanied by a corresponding increase in liver glycogen and muscle glycogen levels as well as superoxide dismutase and lactate dehydrogenase activities. Finally, we believe that the substances with good antioxidant and anti-fatigue activity found in FGB are derived from co-fermented enriched GABA and rare ginsenosides.

17α-Methyltestosterone (MT) is a widely used androgen for all-male fish production in aquaculture. However, the molecular mechanism underlying MT-induced masculinization remains unclear. In this study, we aim to identify the key gene responsible for MT-induced masculinization using the Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) amhy , dmrt1 , and gsdf mutants, which exhibit male-to-female sex reversal. Nile tilapia fry from these three mutant lines were treated with 50 μg/g MT from 5 to 30 days after hatching (dah). The results showed that amhy and gsdf mutants, but not dmrt1 mutants, were masculinized by the MT treatment. Gonadal transcriptome analysis revealed that genes involved in steroidogenesis and germ cell development in MT-treated dmrt1 mutants exhibited a similar expression pattern to that of the wild type (WT) XX. In addition, the dmrt1 mutants cannot be masculinized by co-treatment with MT and the aromatase inhibitor fadrozole. The MT treatment completely blocked early steroidogenic enzyme (Star2, Cyp17a2, and Cyp19a1a) expression independent of amhy , gsdf , and dmrt1 . A luciferase analysis showed that MT directly suppressed basal and Sf-1-activated cyp19a1a promoter activity through ara and arb in cultured HEK293 cells. Furthermore, MT treatment inhibited germ cell proliferation in amhy and gsdf mutants but not in dmrt1 mutants. Consistently, dmrt1 expression was induced in MT-treated WT XX, - amhy , and - gsdf mutants. Taken together, these results suggest that dmrt1 is indispensable for MT-induced masculinization in Nile tilapia and that MT functions by inhibiting early steroid synthesis and activating dmrt1 to promote testis development.

In this paper, a series of tetrameric surfactants (4C n SAZs, n = 12, 14, 16) endowed with zwitterionic characteristic were synthesized by a simple and convenient method and their structures were characterized by FT-IR, 1 H NMR and elemental analysis. Their physicochemical properties were studied using the Wilhelmy plate method, fluorescence spectra and dynamic light scattering technique. 4C n SAZs have higher surface activities and tend to adsorb at the air/water surface rather than self-assembling in aqueous solution. The thermodynamic parameters obtained from surface tension measurements show that both processes of adsorption and micellization of 4C n SAZs are spontaneous and that the micellization processes of 4C n SAZs are entropy-driven processes. Both adsorption and micellization of 4C n SAZs are inclined to occur with the increase of alkyl chain length or temperature. For 4C 12 SAZs, there are only small-size aggregates (micelles), while the large aggregates (vesicles) are observed at the alkyl length of 4C n SAZs of 14 or 16. This shows that the alkyl chain length for oligomeric surfactants has a greater sensitivity for aggregate growth. The aggregate morphologies obtained from the calculated values of critical packing parameter ( p ) for 4C 14 SAZs and 4C 16 SAZs can be supported by the DLS measurement results. The test results obtained by the separation-water-time method show that 4C n SAZs have good emulsification performance and that the prepared emulsions appear to exit in the form of multiple emulsions. In addition, 4C n SAZs have good antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). The present study reveals the unique behavior of a zwitterionic tetrameric surfactant and may give new insights into molecular design and synthesis of a high degree of surfactants with different structure characteristics for potential application in various industrial fields.

The disruption of hematopoietic and immune functions is a significant consequence of the long-term effects of radiation exposure. This study investigated the potential mechanisms by which ferulic acid (FA) acts as a radioprotective agent in mitigating radiation-induced immune damage. C57BL/6J mice were exposed to a dose of 6.0 Gy of 60 Co γ irradiation. FA was administered at doses of 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg/d for 7 days before and 30 days following irradiation. We evaluated changes in peripheral blood cells, T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells in the spleen, and hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in the bone marrow (BM). Whole-genome transcriptome sequencing of BM was performed to explore potential mechanisms. FA administration resulted in a significant reduction in malonaldehyde levels ( p < 0.0001), an increase in catalase and beta-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide levels in serum ( p < 0.05), and enhanced multipotent progenitors ( p < 0.01) and common lymphoid progenitors ( p < 0.05) in the BM. Additionally, there was an elevation in white blood cell levels, red blood cell levels, and hemoglobin levels in peripheral blood ( p < 0.01). Transcriptome analysis indicated that FA reversed the radiation-induced expression of genes related to immunity and inflammation. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay experiments further demonstrated that FA reduced interleukin-6 levels in the BM and decreased JAK1, JAK2, and STAT3 protein content ( p < 0.01). In conclusion, FA might mitigate hematopoietic and immune damage by modulating the JAK/STAT signaling pathway.

Auxin response factors(ARFs) are a class of transcription factors that regulate the expression of auxin response genes and play a crucial role in plant growth and development. Florigen plays a crucial role in the process of flowering. However, the process by which auxin regulates the accumulation of florigen remains largely unclear. This study found that the expression of ZmARF16 in maize increases during flowering, and the genetic transformation of ZmARF16 accelerates the flowering process in Arabidopsis and maize . Furthermore, ZmARF16 was found to be positively correlated with the transcription of the ZCN12 gene. Similarly, the FT-like gene ZCN12 in maize rescues the late flowering phenotype of the FT mutation in Arabidopsis. Moreover, ZCN12 actively participates in the accumulation of florigen and the flowering process. Further research revealed that ZmARF16 positively responds to the auxin signal, and that the interaction between ZmARF16 and the ZCN12 promoter, as well as the subsequent promotion of ZCN12 gene expression, leads to early flowering. This was confirmed through a yeast one-hybrid and dual-luciferase assay. Therefore, the study provides evidence that the ZmARF16 - ZCN12 module plays a crucial role in regulating the flowering process of maize .

Modified polyimide (MPI) flexible printed circuits (FPCs) are used as chip carrier boards. The quality of the FPC directly affects the reliability of the integrated circuit. Furthermore, micro-holes are critical components of FPCs. In this study, an ultraviolet (UV) femtosecond laser is used to drill micro-holes in double-layer flexible circuit boards with MPI as the substrate. The morphology of the micro-hole wall in the copper foil and MPI layer is observed, and the effects of the laser processing parameters on the diameter and depth of the micro-holes are analyzed. The drilling process and mechanism of micro-holes obtained using a UV femtosecond laser in MPI FPCs are discussed. The results show that the morphology of femtosecond laser-machined copper is closely related to the laser energy, and a periodic structure is observed during the machining process. Copper, MPI, and copper oxides are the most common molten deposits in micro-holes during drilling. The depth of the micro-holes increases with an increase in the energy of a single pulse, scanning time, and scanning overlap rate of the laser beam. However, the diameter exhibits no discernible alteration. The material removal rate increased significantly when laser processing was applied to the MPI resin layer.

Stimulus electro-responsive polymer materials can reversibly change their physical or chemical properties under various external stimuli such as temperature, light, force, humidity, pH, and magnetic fields. This review introduces typical conventional stimulus electro-responsive polymer materials and extensively explores novel directions in the field, including multi-stimuli electro-responsive polymer materials and humidity electro-responsive polymer materials pioneered by our research group. Despite significant advancements in stimulus electro-responsive polymer materials, ongoing research focuses on enhancing their efficiency, lifespan, and production costs. Interdisciplinary collaboration and advanced technologies promise to broaden the application scope of these materials, particularly in medical and environmental protection fields, ultimately benefiting society.

Cytokinins (CKs) are a group of phytohormones that are involved in plant growth, development, and disease resistance. The isopentenyl transferase (IPT) and cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) families comprise key enzymes controlling CK biosynthesis and degradation. However, an integrated analysis of these two gene families in radish has not yet been explored. In this study, 13 RsIPT and 12 RsCKX genes were identified and characterized, most of which had four copies in Brassica napus and two copies in radish and other diploid Brassica species. Promoter analysis indicated that the genes contained at least one phytohormone or defense and stress responsiveness cis-acting element. RsIPTs and RsCKXs were expanded through segmental duplication. Moreover, strong purifying selection drove the evolution of the two gene families. The expression of the RsIPT and RsCKX genes distinctly showed diversity in different tissues and developmental stages of the root. Expression profiling showed that RsCKX1-1/1-2/1-3 was significantly upregulated in club-resistant materials during primary infection, suggesting their vital function in clubroot resistance. The interaction network of CKX proteins with similar 3D structures also reflected the important role of RsCKX genes in disease resistance. This study provides a foundation for further functional study on the IPT and CKX genes for clubroot resistance improvement in Raphanus .

Ferroptosis has emerged as a potential mechanism for enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapy in cancer treatment. By suppressing nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), cancer cells may lose their ability to counteract the oxidative stress induced by chemotherapy, thereby becoming more susceptible to ferroptosis. In this study, we investigate the potential of penexanthone A (PXA), a xanthone dimer component derived from the endophytic fungus Diaporthe goulteri, obtained from mangrove plant Acanthus ilicifolius , to enhance the therapeutic effect of cisplatin (CDDP) on colorectal cancer (CRC) by inhibiting Nrf2. The present study reported that PXA significantly improved the ability of CDDP to inhibit the activity of and induce apoptosis in CRC cells. Moreover, PXA was found to increase the level of oxidative stress and DNA damage caused by CDDP. In addition, the overexpression of Nrf2 reversed the DNA damage and ferroptosis induced by the combination of PXA and CDDP. In vivo experiments using zebrafish xenograft models demonstrated that PXA enhanced the therapeutic effect of CDDP on CRC. These studies suggest that PXA enhanced the sensitivity of CRC to CDDP and induce ferroptosis by targeting Nrf2 inhibition, indicating that PXA might serve as a novel anticancer drug in combination chemotherapy.

Skin pigmentation typically arises from the excessive secretion and accumulation of melanin, resulting in a darker complexion compared to normal skin. Currently, the local application of chemical drugs is a first-line strategy for pigmentation disorders, but the safety and efficacy of drugs still cannot meet clinical treatment needs. For long-term and safe medication, researchers have paid attention to natural products with higher biocompatibility. This article begins by examining the pathogenesis and treatment approaches of skin pigmentation diseases and summarizes the research progress and mechanism of natural products with lightening or whitening effects that are clinically common or experimentally proven. Moreover, we outline the novel formulations of natural products in treating pigmentation disorders, including liposomes, nanoparticles, microemulsions, microneedles, and tocosomes. Finally, the pharmacodynamic evaluation methods in the study of pigmentation disorder were first systematically analyzed. In brief, this review aims to collect natural products for skin pigmentation treatment and investigate their formulation design and efficacy evaluation to provide insights for the development of new products for this complex skin disease.

Continuous monitoring of lower extremity muscles is necessary, as the muscles support many human daily activities, such as maintaining balance, standing, walking, running, and jumping. However, conventional electromyography and physiological cross-sectional area methods inherently encounter obstacles when acquiring precise and real-time data pertaining to human bodies, with a notable lack of consideration for user comfort. Benefitting from the fast development of various fabric-based sensors, this paper addresses these current issues by designing an integrated smart compression stocking system, which includes compression garments, fabric-embedded capacitive pressure sensors, an edge control unit, a user mobile application, and cloud backend. The pipeline architecture design and component selection are discussed in detail to illustrate a comprehensive user-centered STIMES design. Twelve healthy young individuals were recruited for clinical experiments to perform maximum voluntary isometric ankle plantarflexion contractions. All data were simultaneously collected through the integrated smart compression stocking system and a muscle force measurement system (Humac NORM, software version HUMAC2015). The obtained correlation coefficients above 0.92 indicated high linear relationships between the muscle torque and the proposed system readout. Two-way ANOVA analysis further stressed that different ankle angles ( p = 0.055) had more important effects on the results than different subjects ( p = 0.290). Hence, the integrated smart compression stocking system can be used to monitor the muscle force of the lower extremities in isometric mode.

Erianin, a bibenzyl compound found in dendrobium extract, has demonstrated broad anticancer activity. However, its mechanism of action in gastric cancer (GC) remains poorly understood. LKB1 is a tumor-suppressor gene, and its mutation is an important driver of various cancers. Yet some studies have reported contradictory findings. In this study, we combined bioinformatics and in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate the effect and potential mechanism of Erianin in the treatment of GC. The results show that LKB1 was highly expressed in patients' tumor tissues and GC cells, and it was associated with poor patient prognosis. Erianin could promote GC cell apoptosis and inhibit the scratch repair, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) characteristics. Erianin dose-dependently inhibited the expression of LKB1, SIK2, SIK3, and PARD3 but had no significant effect on SIK1. Erianin also inhibited tumor growth in CDX mice model. Unexpectedly, 5-FU also exhibited a certain inhibitory effect on LKB1. The combination of Erianin and 5-FU significantly improved the anti-tumor efficacy of 5-FU in the growth of GC cells and xenograft mouse models. In summary, Erianin is a potential anti-GC compound that can inhibit GC growth and EMT properties by targeting the LKB1-SIK2/3-PARD3-signaling axis. The synergistic effect of Erianin and 5-FU suggests a promising therapeutic strategy for GC treatment.

Attitude determination based on a micro-electro-mechanical system inertial measurement unit (MEMS-IMU) has attracted extensive attention. The non-gravitational components of the MEMS-IMU have a significant effect on the accuracy of attitude estimation. To improve the attitude estimation of low-dynamic vehicles under uneven soil conditions or vibrations, a robust Kalman filter (RKF) was developed and tested in this paper, where the noise covariance was adaptively changed to compensate for the external acceleration of the vehicle. The state model for MEMS-IMU attitude estimation was initially constructed using a simplified direction cosine matrix. Subsequently, the variance of unmodeled external acceleration was estimated online based on filtering innovations of different window lengths, where the acceleration disturbance was addressed by tradeoffs in time-delay and prescribed computation cost. The effectiveness of the RKF was validated through experiments using a three-axis turntable, an automatic vehicle, and a tractor tillage test. The turntable experiment demonstrated that the angle result of the RKF was 0.051° in terms of root mean square error (RMSE), showing improvements of 65.5% and 29.2% over a conventional KF and MTi-300, respectively. The dynamic attitude estimation of the automatic vehicle showed that the RKF achieves smoother pitch angles than the KF when the vehicle passes over speed bumps at different speeds; the RMSE of pitch was reduced from 0.875° to 0.460° and presented a similar attitude trend to the MTi-300. The tractor tillage test indicated that the RMSE of plough pitch was improved from 0.493° with the KF to 0.259° with the RKF, an enhancement of approximately 47.5%, illustrating the superiority of the RKF in suppressing the external acceleration disturbances of IMU-based attitude estimation.

Rice straw is an agricultural waste, the disposal of which through open burning is an emerging challenge for ecology. Green manufacturing using straw returning provides a more avant-garde technique that is not only an effective management measure to improve soil fertility in agricultural ecosystems but also nurtures environmental stewardship by reducing waste and the carbon footprint. However, fresh straw that is returned to the field cannot be quickly decomposed, and screening microorganisms with the capacity to degrade straw and understanding their mechanism of action is an efficient approach to solve such problems. This study aimed to reveal the potential mechanism of influence exerted by exogenous degradative bacteria (ZJW-6) on the degradation of straw, growth of plants, and soil bacterial community during the process of returning rice straw to the soil. The inoculation with ZJW-6 enhanced the driving force of cellulose degradation. The acceleration of the rate of decomposition of straw releases nutrients that are easily absorbed by rice ( Oryza sativa L.), providing favorable conditions for its growth and promoting its growth and development; prolongs the photosynthetic functioning period of leaves; and lays the material foundation for high yields of rice. ZJW-6 not only directly participates in cellulose degradation as degrading bacteria but also induces positive interactions between bacteria and fungi and enriches the microbial taxa that were related to straw degradation, enhancing the rate of rice straw degradation. Taken together, ZJW-6 has important biological potential and should be further studied, which will provide new insights and strategies for the appropriate treatment of rice straw. In the future, this degrading bacteria may provide a better opportunity to manage straw in an ecofriendly manner.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is characterized by the abnormal proliferation and differentiation arrest of myeloid progenitor cells. The clinical treatment of AML remains challenging. Promoting AML cell differentiation is a valid strategy, but effective differentiation drugs are lacking for most types of AML. In this study, we generated Tg( drl:hoxa9 ) zebrafish, in which hoxa9 overexpression was driven in hematopoietic cells and myeloid differentiation arrest was exhibited. Using Tg( drl:hoxa9 ) embryos, we performed chemical screening and identified four FDA-approved drugs, ethacrynic acid, khellin, oxcarbazepine, and alendronate, that efficiently restored myeloid differentiation. The four drugs also induced AML cell differentiation, with ethacrynic acid being the most effective. By an RNA-seq analysis, we found that during differentiation, ethacrynic acid activated the IL-17 and MAPK signaling pathways, which are known to promote granulopoiesis. Furthermore, we found that ethacrynic acid enhanced all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA)-induced differentiation, and both types of signaling converged on the IL-17/MAPK pathways. Inhibiting the IL-17/MAPK pathways impaired ethacrynic acid and ATRA-induced differentiation. In addition, we showed that ethacrynic acid is less toxic to embryogenesis and less disruptive to normal hematopoiesis than ATRA. Thus, the combination of ethacrynic acid and ATRA may have broader clinical applications. In conclusion, through zebrafish-aided screening, our study identified four drugs that can be repurposed to induce AML differentiation, thus providing new agents for AML therapy.

This study aimed to explore how positional performance varies across different youth age groups and during matches in football competitions. The study encompassed 160 male outfield youth football players ( n = 80, under-13, U13; n = 80, under-15, U15) who belonged to the starting line-up and played the entire first half of each match. The players' positional data were gathered through the global positional system for each of the eight matches performed by each age group. The frequency of near-in-phase synchronization based on speed displacements, spatial exploration index, and the distance to the nearest teammate and opponent were used as variables. Additionally, each match half was segmented into three equal parts to assess changes over time and used as a period factor along with age group. The results indicated that U13 players showed a significant decrease (from small to large ES) in synchronization speed and spatial exploration index throughout the first half of the match, along with a decrease in the distance to the nearest opponent. In contrast, U15 players exhibited most changes during the third segment of the half, with a decrease in speed synchronization and spatial exploration, but an increase in the distance and regularity to the nearest opponent. Comparing both age groups revealed significant differences in speed synchronization across the entire half of the match and within each segmented period (from small to large ES), with U13 consistently showing higher values. The study highlights that long durations in 11 vs. 11 matches might not provide an appropriate learning environment in the U13 age group. Conversely, the U15 group displayed better capacity for tactical adjustments over time, suggesting a higher level of tactical maturity. Overall, these findings emphasize the importance of adapting youth football training and competition structures to the developmental needs and capabilities of different age groups to optimize learning and performance outcomes.

Multivariate time series modeling has been essential in sensor-based data mining tasks. However, capturing complex dynamics caused by intra-variable (temporal) and inter-variable (spatial) relationships while simultaneously taking into account evolving data distributions is a non-trivial task, which faces accumulated computational overhead and multiple temporal patterns or distribution modes. Most existing methods focus on the former direction without adaptive task-specific learning ability. To this end, we developed a holistic spatial-temporal meta-learning probabilistic inference framework, entitled ST-MeLaPI, for the efficient and versatile learning of complex dynamics. Specifically, first, a multivariate relationship recognition module is utilized to learn task-specific inter-variable dependencies. Then, a multiview meta-learning and probabilistic inference strategy was designed to learn shared parameters while enabling the fast and flexible learning of task-specific parameters for different batches. At the core are spatial dependency-oriented and temporal pattern-oriented meta-learning approximate probabilistic inference modules, which can quickly adapt to changing environments via stochastic neurons at each timestamp. Finally, a gated aggregation scheme is leveraged to realize appropriate information selection for the generative style prediction. We benchmarked our approach against state-of-the-art methods with real-world data. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our approach over the baselines.

This study assessed the nutritional profile of camellia oil through its fatty acid composition, highlighting its high oleic acid content (81.4%), followed by linoleic (7.99%) and palmitic acids (7.74%), demonstrating its excellence as an edible oil source. The impact of beeswax (BW) and glycerol monolaurate (GML) on camellia oil oleogels was investigated, revealing that increasing BW or GML concentrations enhanced hardness and springiness, with 10% BW oleogel exhibiting the highest hardness and springiness. FTIR results suggested that the structure of the oleogels was formed by interactions between molecules without altering the chemical composition. In biscuits, 10% BW oleogel provided superior crispness, expansion ratio, texture, and taste, whereas GML imparted a distinct odor. In sausages, no significant differences were observed in color, water retention, and pH between the control and replacement groups; however, the BW group scored higher than the GML group in the sensory evaluation. The findings suggest that the BW oleogel is an effective fat substitute in biscuits and sausages, promoting the application of camellia oil in food products.

Cancer is one of the major public health challenges in the world, which is characterized by rapid progression and high mortality. Immunotherapy, represented by PD-1 monoclonal antibody, has significantly improved the efficacy of malignant tumors and has become one of the most popular immunotherapy methods at present. Therefore, there is an increasing demand for novel detection methods for PD-1 monoclonal antibodies. The aim of this work was to establish a rapid, simple, and sensitive immunochromatographic test strip (ICTS) based on the AuNPs enlargement for both visual and instrumental detection of the PD-1 monoclonal antibody concentration. The mixed solution of NH 2 OH·HCl and HAuCl 4 was used as an enhancement solution to lower the detection limit and achieve higher sensitivity. A test strip reader was used to construct a visualized quantitative detection standard curve for the PD-1 monoclonal antibody concentration. The LOD was 1.58 ng/mL through a triple signal-to-noise ratio. The detection time was within 10 min. The constructed test strips can rapidly, accurately, and efficiently detect the concentration of PD-1 monoclonal antibody in real samples.

EEG signals capture information through multi-channel electrodes and hold promising prospects for human emotion recognition. However, the presence of high levels of noise and the diverse nature of EEG signals pose significant challenges, leading to potential overfitting issues that further complicate the extraction of meaningful information. To address this issue, we propose a Granger causal-based spatial-temporal contrastive learning framework, which significantly enhances the ability to capture EEG signal information by modeling rich spatial-temporal relationships. Specifically, in the spatial dimension, we employ a sampling strategy to select positive sample pairs from individuals watching the same video. Subsequently, a Granger causality test is utilized to enhance graph data and construct potential causality for each channel. Finally, a residual graph convolutional neural network is employed to extract features from EEG signals and compute spatial contrast loss. In the temporal dimension, we first apply a frequency domain noise reduction module for data enhancement on each time series. Then, we introduce the Granger-Former model to capture time domain representation and calculate the time contrast loss. We conduct extensive experiments on two publicly available sentiment recognition datasets (DEAP and SEED), achieving 1.65% improvement of the DEAP dataset and 1.55% improvement of the SEED dataset compared to state-of-the-art unsupervised models. Our method outperforms benchmark methods in terms of prediction accuracy as well as interpretability.

This article shows an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of "H"-shaped silicon disks with tilted splitting gaps, which can detect the temperature and refractive index (RI). By introducing asymmetry parameters that excite the quasi-BIC, there are three distinct Fano resonances with nearly 100% modulation depth, and the maximal quality factor (Q-factor) is over 10 4 . The predominant roles of different electromagnetic excitations in three distinct modes are demonstrated through near-field analysis and multipole decomposition. A numerical analysis of resonance response based on different refractive indices reveals a RI sensitivity of 262 nm/RIU and figure of merit (FOM) of 2183 RIU -1 . This sensor can detect temperature fluctuations with a temperature sensitivity of 59.5 pm/k. The proposed metasurface provides a novel method to induce powerful TD resonances and offers possibilities for the design of high-performance sensors.

With cyclohexane (CH), benzene (BE), and ethyl acetate (EA) as solvents, Naomaohu lignite (NL, a typical oil-rich, low-rank coal) from Hami, Xinjiang, was thermally dissolved (TD) to obtain three types of soluble organics (NL CH , NL BE , and NL EA ) and the corresponding insoluble portions (NL CH-R , NL BE-R , and NL EA-R ). Ultimate analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were used to characterize NL and its soluble and insoluble portions. Results showed that, compared with NL, the C element in NL CH-R , NL BE-R , and NL EA-R increased, while the O element decreased significantly, indicating that thermal dissolution is a carbon enrichment process and an effective deoxidation method. The GC/MS results showed that oxygen-containing organic compounds (OCOCs) are dominant in NL CH , NL BE , and NL EA . NL CH is mainly composed of ketones (11.90%) and esters (19.04%), while NL BE and NL EA are composed of alcohols (12.18% and 2.42%, respectively) and esters (66.09% and 84.08%, respectively), with alkyl and aromatic acid esters as the main components. Among them, EA exhibits significant selective destruction for oxygen-containing functional groups in NL. XPS, FTIR, and TG-DTG results showed that thermal dissolution can not only affect the macromolecular network structure of NL, but also improve its pyrolysis reactivity. In this study, an improved PVA/PLA fibrous hemostatic membrane was prepared by electrospinning technology combined with air plasma modification. The plasma treatment was used to modify PLA to enhance the interlayer bonding between the PVA and PLA fibrous membranes first, then modify the PVA to improve the hemostatic capacity. The surfaces of the PLA and PVA were oxidized after air plasma treatment, the fibrous diameter was reduced, and roughness was increased. Plasma treatment enhanced the interfacial bond strength of PLA/PVA composite fibrous membrane, and PLA acted as a good mechanical support. Plasma-treated PVA/PLA composite membranes showed an increasing liquid-enrichment capacity of 350% and shortened the coagulation time to 258 s. The hemostatic model of the liver showed that the hemostatic ability of plasma-treated PVA/PLA composite membranes was enhanced by 79% compared to untreated PVA membranes, with a slight improvement over commercially available collagen. The results showed that the plasma-treated PVA/PLA fibers were able to achieve more effective hemostasis, which provides a new strategy for improving the hemostatic performance of hemostatic materials.

This paper presents a symmetric dual-band multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system tailored for fifth-generation (5G) mobile terminals. Operating within the 5G frequency bands N77/N78 (3.4-3.6 GHz) and N79 (4.8-5.0 GHz), the proposed MIMO system achieves high isolation between adjacent antenna elements through slotting and self-decoupling technologies. Antenna elements are strategically positioned on two frames perpendicular to the smartphone's main board. Each antenna element integrates a rectangular microstrip radiator on the inner frame surface, accompanied by a grounded rectangular ring on the outer frame surface. The feed line, situated atop the main board, connects to an external SMA connector located at the main board's bottom. Measurement results reveal isolations exceeding 20 dB for the lower band and 24 dB for the higher band. The fabricated and tested MIMO antenna system demonstrates excellent agreement between simulation and measurement outcomes.

A single nucleotide variant in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) 1555A>G is associated with drug-induced hearing loss. For the 1555A>G mutation site, 1555A wild-type and 1555G mutant-type plasmids were constructed, respectively. In this study, a PCR method based on the TaqMan amplification refractory mutation system was proposed to detect mtDNA 1555A>G. A common upstream primer, a common TaqMan probe, and two downstream allele-specific primers with mismatched bases were designed. One-step amplification and detection of the wild-type and mutant type at the 1555 site were realized for the deafness-related gene through two reactions. Based on this detection method, the minimum detection limit of the wild-type and mutant type detection systems for plasmids was 50 copies/μL. The minimum sensitivity for the detection of nucleic acids in real dried blood spot (DBS) samples was 0.1 ng/μL. In the normal DBS DNA sample, the detection limit of the mutation abundance reached 0.78%. The specificity of the detection method was 100%, and the coefficient of variation was less than 3.36%. This approach was validated using clinical DNA extracted from 113 DBS samples of newborns. Additionally, it showed 100% agreement with bi-directional Sanger sequencing. It can be used as an optional method for the clinical detection of deafness-related genes.

This study focuses on the heavily Mg-doped GaN in which the passivation effect of hydrogen and the compensation effect of nitrogen vacancies (V N ) impede its further development. To investigate those two factors, H ion implantation followed by thermal annealing was performed on the material. The evolution of relevant defects (H and V N ) was revealed, and their distinct behaviors during thermal annealing were compared between different atmospheres (N 2 /NH 3 ). The concentration of H and its associated yellow luminescence (YL) band intensity decrease as the thermal annealing temperature rises, regardless of the atmosphere being N 2 or NH 3 . However, during thermal annealing in NH 3 , the decrease in H concentration is notably faster compared to N 2 . Furthermore, a distinct trend is observed in the behavior of the blue luminescence (BL) band under N 2 and NH 3 . Through a comprehensive analysis of surface properties, we deduce that the decomposition of NH 3 during thermal annealing not only promotes the out-diffusion of H ions from the material, but also facilitates the repair of V N on the surface of heavily Mg-doped GaN. This research could provide crucial insights into the post-growth process of heavily Mg-doped GaN.

Siderophores are a class of small molecules renowned for their high iron binding capacity, essential for all life forms requiring iron. This article provides a detailed review of the diverse classifications, and biosynthetic pathways of siderophores, with a particular emphasis on siderophores synthesized via nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) and non-NRPS pathways. We further explore the secretion mechanisms of siderophores in microbes and plants, and their role in regulating bioavailable iron levels. Beyond biological functions, the applications of siderophores in medicine, agriculture, and environmental sciences are extensively discussed. These applications include biological pest control, disease treatment, ecological pollution remediation, and heavy metal ion removal. Through a comprehensive analysis of the chemical properties and biological activities of siderophores, this paper demonstrates their wide prospects in scientific research and practical applications, while also highlighting current research gaps and potential future directions.

Mulberry is a rapidly growing plant that thrives in diverse climatic, topographical, and soil types, spanning temperature and temperate countries. Mulberry plants are valued as functional foods for their abundant chemical composition, serving as a significant reservoir of bioactive compounds like proteins, polysaccharides, phenolics, and flavonoids. Moreover, these compounds displayed potent antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals, inhibiting reactive oxygen species generation, and restoring elevated nitric oxide production induced by LPS stimulation through the downregulation of inducible NO synthase expression. Active components like oxyresveratrol found in Morus demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting leukocyte migration through the MEK/ERK signaling pathway. Gallic and chlorogenic acids in mulberry leaves (ML) powder-modulated TNF, IL-6, and IRS1 proteins, improving various inflammatory conditions by immune system modulation. As we delve deeper into understanding its anti-inflammatory potential and how it works therapeutically, it is crucial to refine the extraction process to enhance the effectiveness of its bioactive elements. Recent advancements in extraction techniques, such as solid-liquid extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, superficial fluid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and ultrasonic-assisted extraction, are being explored. Among the extraction methods tested, including Soxhlet extraction, maceration, and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), UAE demonstrated superior efficiency in extracting bioactive compounds from mulberry leaves. Overall, this comprehensive review sheds light on the potential of mulberry as a natural immunomodulatory agent and provides insights into its mechanisms of action for future research and therapeutic applications.

Normally, the acidic impurities in hemihydrate phosphogypsum (HPG) must be neutralized when HPG is utilized, and a little amount of calcium hydroxide (CH) is the best choice. In this paper, the effects of excessive CH (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.% and 20 wt.% of HPG) for carbonation curing on the performance of hardened HPG paste were studied. According to the results of macro tests and microanalyses of XRD, TG, SEM-EDS, MIP and N 2 physisorption, it could be verified that CaF 2 , Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and a large amount of nanoscale CaCO 3 crystals were produced as a result of neutralization and carbonation, and the compressive strength and the water resistance of carbonated HPG + CH paste were significantly improved due to the effects of nanoscale CaCO 3 crystals on pore refinement and the coverage on the surfaces of gypsum crystals of the hardened paste. Therefore, this study suggests a feasible and green method for recycling HPG/PG, with the collaborative effects of neutralization, performance enhancement and reductions in CO 2 emissions.

In the face of ongoing water pollution challenges, the intricate interplay between dissolved organic matter and disinfectants like chlorine gives rise to potentially harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during water treatment. The exploration of DBP formation originating from amino acids (AA) is a critical focus of global research. Aromatic DBPs, in particular, have garnered considerable attention due to their markedly higher toxicity compared to their aliphatic counterparts. This work seeks to advance the understanding of DBP formation by investigating chlorination disinfection and kinetics using tyrosine (Tyr), phenylalanine (Phe), and tryptophan (Trp) as precursors. Via rigorous experiments, a total of 15 distinct DBPs with accurate molecular structures were successfully identified. The chlorination of all three AAs yielded highly toxic chlorophenylacetonitriles (CPANs), and the disinfectant dosage and pH value of the reaction system potentially influence chlorination kinetics. Notably, Phe exhibited the highest degradation rate compared to Tyr and Trp, at both the C AA :C HOCl ratio of within 1:2 and a wide pH range (6.0 to 9.0). Additionally, a neutral pH environment triggered the maximal reaction rates of the three AAs, while an acidic condition may reduce their reactivity. Overall, this study aims to augment the DBP database and foster a deeper comprehension of the DBP formation and relevant kinetics underlying the chlorination of aromatic AAs.

Despite data showing that nutritional interventions high in antioxidant/anti-inflammatory properties (anthocyanin-rich foods, such as blueberries/elderberries) may decrease risk of memory loss and cognitive decline, evidence for such effects in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is limited. This study examined preliminary effects of American elderberry (Sambucus nigra subsp. canadensis) juice on cognition and inflammatory markers in patients with MCI. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, patients with MCI ( n = 24, M age = 76.33 ± 6.95) received American elderberry ( n = 11) or placebo ( n = 13) juice (5 mL orally 3 times a day) for 6 months. At baseline, 3 months, and 6 months, patients completed tasks measuring global cognition, verbal memory, language, visuospatial cognitive flexibility/problem solving, and memory. A subsample ( n = 12, 7 elderberry/5 placebo) provided blood samples to measure serum inflammatory markers. Multilevel models examined effects of the condition (elderberry/placebo), time (baseline/3 months/6 months), and condition by time interactions on cognition/inflammation outcomes. Attrition rates for elderberry (18%) and placebo (15%) conditions were fairly low. The dosage compliance (elderberry-97%; placebo-97%) and completion of cognitive (elderberry-88%; placebo-87%) and blood-based (elderberry-100%; placebo-100%) assessments was high. Elderberry (not placebo) trended ( p = 0.09) towards faster visuospatial problem solving performance from baseline to 6 months. For the elderberry condition, there were significant or significantly trending decreases over time across several markers of low-grade peripheral inflammation, including vasorin, prenylcysteine oxidase 1, and complement Factor D. Only one inflammatory marker showed an increase over time (alpha-2-macroglobin). In contrast, for the placebo, several inflammatory marker levels increased across time (L-lactate dehydrogenase B chain, complement Factor D), with one showing deceased levels over time (L-lactate dehydrogenase A chain). Daily elderberry juice consumption in patients with MCI is feasible and well tolerated and may provide some benefit to visuospatial cognitive flexibility. Preliminary findings suggest elderberry juice may reduce low-grade inflammation compared to a placebo-control. These promising findings support the need for larger, more definitive prospective studies with longer follow-ups to better understand mechanisms of action and the clinical utility of elderberries for potentially mitigating cognitive decline.

Simultaneous transmit and receive wireless communications have been highlighted for their potential to double the spectral efficiency. However, it is necessary to mitigate self-interference (SI). Considering both the SI channel and remote transmission (RT) channel need to be estimated before equalizing the received signal, we propose two adaptive algorithms for linear and nonlinear self-interference cancellation (SIC), based on a multi-layered joint channel estimator structure. The proposed algorithms estimate the RT channel while performing SIC, and the multi-layered structure ensures improved performance across various interference-to-signal ratios. The M-estimate function enhances the robustness of the algorithm, allowing it to converge even when affected by impulsive noise. For nonlinear SIC, this paper introduces an adaptive algorithm based on generalized Hammerstein polynomial basis functions. The simulation results indicate that this approach achieves a better convergence speed and normalized mean squared difference compared to existing SIC methods, leading to a lower system bit error rate.
