The objective of this work was to optimize the ultrasound-assisted extraction process of bioactive compounds from byproducts of V. vinifera and C. sinensis using the Taguchi methodology. Moreover, the flavonoid content and the subsequent evaluation of the antioxidant potential through three different assays (ABTS∙+ radical inhibition, ferric-reducing power (FRAP), and OH• radical inhibition) were determined. Furthermore, the potential of these metabolites to inhibit the α-amylase enzyme and their protective effect to inhibit the hemolysis due to oxidative processes was assessed. In addition, functional group analysis was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The Taguchi L9 statistical model enabled the increase in bioactive compound yields by evaluating factors such as particle size, temperature, time, and solvent concentration. The samples were found to contain flavonoid-type compounds, which translated into their ability to inhibit free radicals (ABTS∙+ and OH•) and act as reducing agents (FRAP). They exhibited inhibitory effects on the α-amylase enzyme involved in the assimilation of starch and its derivatives, along with providing over 50% protection to erythrocytes in the presence of free radicals generated by AAPH. Furthermore, FTIR analysis facilitated the identification of characteristic functional groups of phenolic compounds (O–H, C–H, C=C, C–C, C=O). These findings suggest that the analyzed byproducts can effectively serve as sources of bioactive compounds with potential applications in the formulation of functional foods and medicines. However, it is necessary to conduct compound identification and toxicity analysis to ensure the safety of these bioactive compounds.

Typically, citrus waste is composted on land by producers or used as livestock feed. However, the biorefinery approach offers a sustainable and economically viable solution for managing and valorizing these agricultural residues. This review examines research from the period 2014 to 2024. Citrus waste can be utilized initially by extracting the present phytochemicals and subsequently by producing value-added products using it as a raw material. The phytochemicals reported as extracted include essential oils (primarily limonene), pectin, polyphenolic components, micro- and nano-cellulose, proteins, and enzymes, among others. The components produced from the waste include bioethanol, biogas, volatile acids, biodiesel, microbial enzymes, and levulinic acid, among others. The review indicates that citrus waste has technical, economic, and environmental potential for utilization at the laboratory scale and, in some cases, at the pilot scale. However, research on refining pathways, optimization, and scalability must continue to be an active field of investigation.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, and the gold standard for treatment is the use of the very potent topical steroids, but they can have side effects. Previously, we demonstrated that OZOILE (stable ozonides) were effective in children affected by LS, reducing the inflammatory process and stimulating tissue regeneration of the foreskin, showing a similar efficacy to steroid treatment. In this study, the modulation of inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways was evaluated by qRT-PCR and Western blotting in foreskins affected by LS removed from patients untreated or treated with OZOILE or corticosteroid cream formulations for 7 days before circumcision. OZOILE induced a significant increase in NRF2 and SOD2 levels, while it did not produce change in MIF, NF-kB subunits, and MMPs in comparison to untreated foreskins. Conversely, steroid topical treatment produced a significant reduction in the expression of p65, MIF, and MMP9, but it did not cause variation in NRF2 and SOD2 levels. These results demonstrate that the use of OZOILE as cream formulation exhibits effects on NRF2 signaling, and it does not induce NF-κB activation, unlike corticosteroids. On the basis of our biochemical data, further studies evaluating the role of NRF2 signaling cascade are necessary.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infection characterized by the dysregulation of systemic cytokine levels. The measurement of serum levels of inflammatory cyto-/chemokines has been suggested as a tool in the management of COVID-19. The aim of this study is to highlight the significance of measured levels of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12(p70), IL-27, interferon (IFN)γ, interferon gamma-induced protein (IP)-10, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in serum samples from infected and recovered subjects, possibly predictive of severity and/or duration of the disease. Serum samples from healthy (HD), positive at hospital admittance (T0), and recovered subjects (T1, 31–60, or 70–200 days post-negativization) were collected and tested through a bead-based cytometric assay and confirmed through ELISA. IL-10 levels were increased in the T0 group compared to both HD and T1. IL-27 significantly decreased in the 31–60 group. IL-1β significantly increased in the 70–200 day group. TNF-α significantly decreased in T0 compared to HD and in the 31–60 group versus HD. IP-10 significantly increased in T0 compared to HD. These results suggest that IP-10 could represent an early marker of clinical worsening, whereas IL-10 might be indicative of the possible onset of post-COVID-19 long syndrome.

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), encompassing disorders like polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF), are characterized by clonal hematopoiesis without the Philadelphia chromosome. The JAK2 V617F mutation is prevalent in PV, ET, and PMF, while mutations in MPL and CALR also play significant roles. These conditions predispose patients to thrombotic events, with PMF exhibiting the lowest survival among MPNs. Chronic inflammation, driven by cytokine release from aberrant leukocytes and platelets, amplifies cardiovascular risk through various mechanisms, including atherosclerosis and vascular remodeling. Additionally, MPN-related complications like pulmonary hypertension and cardiac fibrosis contribute to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This review consolidates recent research on MPNs’ cardiovascular implications, emphasizing thrombotic risk, chronic inflammation, and vascular stiffness. Understanding these associations is crucial for developing targeted therapies and improving outcomes in MPN patients.

This study investigates communication between UAVs using long range (LoRa) devices, focusing on the interaction between a LoRa gateway UAV and other UAVs equipped with LoRa transmitters. By conducting experiments across various geographical regions, this study aims to delineate the fundamental boundary conditions for the efficient control of a UAV fleet. The parameters under analysis encompass inter-device spacing, radio interference effects, and terrain topography. This research yields pivotal insights into communication network design and optimization, thereby enhancing operational efficiency and safety within diverse geographical contexts for UAV operations. Further research insights could involve a weather analysis and implementation of improved solutions in terms of communication systems.

The memory-enhancing activity of Matricaria chamomilla hydroalcoholic extract (MCE) is already being investigated by behavioral and biochemical assays in scopolamine-induced amnesia rat models, while the effects of scopolamine (Sco) on cerebral glucose metabolism are examined as well. Nevertheless, the study of the metabolic profile determined by an enriched MCE has not been performed before. The present experiments compared metabolic quantification in characteristic cerebral regions and behavioral characteristics for normal, only diseased, diseased, and MCE- vs. Galantamine (Gal)-treated Wistar rats. A memory deficit was induced by four weeks of daily intraperitoneal Sco injection. Starting on the eighth day, the treatment was intraperitoneally administered 30 min after Sco injection for a period of three weeks. The memory assessment comprised three maze tests. Glucose metabolism was quantified after the 18F-FDG PET examination. The right amygdala, piriform, and entorhinal cortex showed the highest differential radiopharmaceutical uptake of the 50 regions analyzed. Rats treated with MCE show metabolic similarity with normal rats, while the Gal-treated group shows features closer to the diseased group. Behavioral assessments evidenced a less anxious status and a better locomotor activity manifested by the MCE-treated group compared to the Gal-treated group. These findings prove evident metabolic ameliorative qualities of MCE over Gal classic treatment, suggesting that the extract could be a potent neuropharmacological agent against amnesia.

The present investigation explores the spatial distribution of Cooper pair density in graph-shaped arrays of Josephson junctions using a Ginzburg–Landau approach. We specifically investigate double-comb structures and compare their properties with linear arrays as reference systems. Our findings reveal that the peculiar connectivity of the double-comb structure leads to spatial gradients in the order parameter, which can be readily detected through measurements of Josephson critical currents. We present experimental results which indicate the specific dependence of the order parameter on the branches of the graphs and are evidence of the theoretical predictions.

This paper presents a tunable, switchable multi-wavelength emission from an erbium-doped fiber ring laser, enabled by adjusting the spectral fringe visibility of a fiber interferometer filter. The filter is formed with specially designed concatenated tapered fibers to configure a Mach-Zehnder fiber interferometer (MZFI). The laser emission is highly flexible and reconfigurable, allowing for tuning between single- and dual-wavelength operation. The laser can switch sequentially from one up to six wavelengths by fixing the curvature and adjusting the polarization state. The lasing emission is generated over a stable wavelength range between 1559.59 nm and 1563.54 nm, exhibiting an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) exceeding ~35 dB. The performance of amplitude and wavelength fluctuations were evaluated, indicating an appropriate stability of ~3 dB and a shift less than 0.1 nm within a 45 min period at room temperature. The present study retrospectively analyzed the infectious agents associated with 829 abortion outbreaks occurring from 2011 to 2021 in northern Italy. Foetuses were subjected to necropsies, and organ samples were analyzed by direct PCR to screen for six swine pathogens. In 42.0% of the examined outbreaks, at least one infectious agent was found. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) (24.9%) and porcine circovirus-2 (PCV2) (11.5%) were the most frequently detected among the known abortion-inducing pathogens. Chlamydia spp. (5.6%), porcine parvovirus (PPV) (4.0%), and Leptospira spp. (2.6%) were less common. Although its role in swine reproductive disorders is still unclear, PCV3 was detected in 19.6% of the cases. Coinfections were detected in 25.0% of positive outbreaks, and the most frequent coinfection was represented by PRRSV and PCV2 (32.2%), followed by PRRSV and PCV3 (23%). PCV2 prevalence showed a slight but consistent reduction during the study period, while PCV3 increased in frequency. Our data suggest an overall reduction in abortion outbreaks during the study period. PRRSV was confirmed as the main abortion agent detected in the examined area, while PCV2 prevalence showed a decline. Conversely, PCV3 detection has been increasing, supporting its potential role as an abortion agent. Our results highlight the importance of implementing a consistent and standardized sampling procedure, as well as a thorough diagnostic protocol, to reduce the incidence of inconclusive diagnoses.

This paper presents a comprehensive review of scientific papers and market reports analyzing the economic competitiveness of fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs) with respect to their conventional alternatives via the total cost of ownership (TCO) methodology. We discussed the variables and data taken into account and compared the resulting outcomes by year and geographical areas. It emerged that FCBs are not currently cost competitive. The decreasing trend in acquisition and fuel costs, however, indicates potential for future competitiveness. We find that the current TCO literature on FCEBs presents several areas of uncertainty and weakness. Potential improvements can be achieved by: (i) extending the geographic coverage to Asian and African developing countries; (ii) making use of real-world data instead of simulated data, in particular, concerning acquisition costs, hydrogen costs under different pathways, fuel efficiency, and maintenance costs; (iii) clarifying the role of infrastructural costs; (iv) exploring the existence of economies of scale at fleet level; (v) distinguishing among different bus sizes.

Sous vide cooking implies cooking foods, packed under vacuum conditions, at controlled temperatures (Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Clostridium spores) in chicken breast and eggs (omelet). For this purpose, two levels of inoculation (102 and 106 CFU/g), two different recipes, and two distinct treatments (with and without storage) for each food were studied. After treatments and storage, the corresponding microbiological counts were performed with standard methods. Average inactivation rates observed were 1.70, 4.82, and 4.34 log for Clostridium spores, Campylobacter, and Salmonella, respectively. No significant differences in microbial inactivation were perceived between the different recipes (food composition) or treatments, except for Clostridium spores, which showed a higher inactivation rate (2.30 log) when samples were stored. In general, preliminary results showed that, although appropriate levels of inactivation are reached for vegetative pathogenic cells, in some cases (spores in breast and Salmonella in eggs), the remaining microbiological risks should be considered and further studied, especially if long-term storage is planned.

Cryptococcus neoformans is included in the World Health Organization fungal priority pathogen list, complied to expedite improved research and public-health interventions. The limited number of available antifungal drugs, their associated toxicity, and the emergence of drug-resistant strains make the development of new therapeutic strategies mandatory. Pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs) from the host’s innate immune system constitute a potential source of new antimicrobial agents. CD5 and CD6 are lymphoid members of the ancient scavenger receptor cysteine-rich superfamily (SRCR-SF) which bind pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) of fungal and bacterial origin. Evidence supports the concept that such binding maps to 11-mer sequences present in each of their three SRCR extracellular domains. Herein, we have designed synthetic peptides containing tandems of such 11-mer sequences (namely CD5-T and CD6-T) and analyzed their C. neoformans-binding properties in vitro. Our results show both inhibitory effects on fungal growth and an ability to impact capsule formation and titanization, two critical virulence factors of C. neoformans involved in immune evasion. These effects hold promise for CD5-T and CD6-T peptides as single or adjuvant therapeutic agents against cryptococcosis.

The paper explains how nano exposure is assessed in the construction field and focuses on the production of fire-resistant insulation panels with nanoclay. Utilizing the commercial ANSYS CFX® software, a preliminary theoretical simulation was conducted on nano exposure in the workplace, which revealed that particle dispersion is primarily driven by diffusion. Panel post-processing through drilling results in the highest inhalation exposure, followed by mixing and grinding activities. Compared to a state of ‘no activity’, each activity resulted in an exposure increase by a factor of min. 1000. An overall assessment suggests that the use of nanoparticles in construction materials may not significantly heighten workers’ exposure to nanopowders when considering particle concentration alone as opposed to using traditional micro-scale materials. However, the issue persists when it comes to blending powders or performing finishing tasks on panels, with concentration levels being significantly higher for drilling, grinding, and mixing powders at 2.4 times above the standard reference value (40,000 particles/cm3); this is unacceptable, even for brief durations. Examination of dermal contact with gloves and masks worn by workers revealed no nanoparticle penetration. Safety measures were proposed for workers based on decision trees to enhance their safety. Ten categories of protection strategies have been devised to combat the impact of nanoparticles, which are tailored to specific technical situations, but they must be modified for various types of nanoparticles despite potential shared health implications.

The prediction of liver-related events (LRE) after sustained virological response (SVR) in HCV-advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) patients is crucial. We aimed to evaluate incidence and risk factors of LRE in HCV-cirrhotic patients after SVR and to assess dynamic changes of liver stiffness in participants without LRE at the end of follow-up. We enrolled 575 consecutive patients with HCV-ACLD treated with DAAs and followed up for 5 years after SVR12. Overall, 98 (17%) patients developed any type of event, and HCC was the most frequent LRE. The incidence rate was 1.6 per 100 person-years (p/y) for both HCC and hepatic decompensation. Baseline LSM ≥ 20 kPa was the only independent predictor of hepatic decompensation, while LSM ≥ 20 kPa and male sex were independent predictors of HCC development. Among the 341 participants without LRE and with paired LSM, any LSM reduction was observed in 314 (92.1%), and half of them showed a decrease of LSM ≥ 20%. Among patients without LRE, 27.3% of participants without ≥20% LSM decrease at 2 years achieved the 5-year goal; in contrast, 31.6% of participants with ≥20% LSM decrease at 2 years lost it at 5 years. These findings provide evidence that baseline LSM is a tool to stratify patients at risk of developing LRE; the dynamic changes of LSM value suggest the need for monitoring this parameter over time.

Few therapeutic options are available to treat COVID-19. The KEAP1/NRF2 pathway, the major redox-responsive pathway, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target for COVID-19 as it regulates redox homeostasis and inflammation that are altered during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we characterized the effects of NRF2-agonist Sulfodyne®, a stabilized natural Sulforaphane, in cellular and animal models of SARS-CoV-2 infection. In pulmonary or colonic epithelial cell lines, Sulfodyne® elicited a more efficient inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 replication than NRF2-agonists DMF and CDDO. This antiviral activity was not dependent on NRF2 but was associated with the regulation of several metabolic pathways, including the inhibition of ER stress and mTOR signaling, which are activated during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Sulfodyne® also decreased SARS-CoV-2 mediated inflammatory responses by inhibiting the delayed induction of IFNB1 and type I IFN-stimulated genes in infected epithelial cell lines and by reducing the activation of human by-stander monocytes recruited after SARS-CoV-2 infection. In K18-hACE2 mice infected with SARS-CoV-2, Sulfodyne® treatment reduced both early lung viral load and disease severity by fine-tuning IFN-beta levels. Altogether, these results provide evidence for multiple mechanisms that underlie the antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities of Sulfodyne® and pinpoint Sulfodyne® as a potent therapeutic agent against pathogenic effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

This paper describes the process of producing chemosensors based on hybrid nanostructures obtained from Al2O3, as well as ZnO ceramic nanotubes and the following conducting polymers: poly(3-hexylthiophene), polyaniline emeraldine-base (PANI-EB), and poly(3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-polystyrene sulfonate. The process for creating ceramic nanotubes involves three steps: creating polymer fiber nets using poly(methyl methacrylate), depositing ceramic films onto the nanofiber nets using magnetron deposition, and heating the nanotubes to 600 °C to burn off the polymer support completely. The technology for obtaining hybrid nanostructures from ceramic nanotubes and conducting polymers is drop-casting. AFM analysis emphasized a higher roughness, mainly in the case of PANI-EB, for both nanotube types, with a much larger grain size dimension of over 5 μm. The values of the parameter Rku were close or slightly above 3, indicating, in all cases, the formation of layers predominantly characterized by peaks and not by depressions, with a Gaussian distribution. An ink-jet printer was used to generate chemiresistors from ceramic nanotubes and PANI-EB structures, and the metallization was made with commercial copper ink for printed electronics. Calibration curves were experimentally generated for both sensing structures across a wider range of NH3 concentrations in air, reaching up to 5 ppm. A 0.5 ppm detection limit was established. The curve for the ZnO:PANI-EB structure presented high linearity and lower resistance values. The sensor could be used in medical diagnosis for the analysis of breath ammonia and biomarkers for predicting CKD in stages higher than 1. The threshold value of 1 ppm represents a feasible value for the presented sensor, which can be defined as a simple, low-value and robust device for individual use, beneficial at the patient level.

The paper presents a technological approach for obtaining sintered components with tailored electromagnetic features from electromagnetically active powders through the selective recycling of electronic waste, in particular scrap electronic components. Printed circuit board (PCB) scraps were submitted to a succession of grinding processes, followed by progressive magnetic and electrostatic separation, resulting two final fractions: metallic particles and non-metallic particles including different metallic oxides. Three types of powders were analyzed, i.e., powder after fine grinding, after magnetic separation and after electrostatic separation, which were further processed within a spark plasma sintering furnace in order to obtain solid disk samples. All samples contained several classes of oxides, and also residual metals, leading to specific thermal decomposition processes at different temperatures, depending on the nature of the oxides present in the studied materials. The chemical analysis of powders, via spectrometry with X-ray fluorescence—XRF, emphasized the presence of a mixture of metal oxides and traces of metals (mainly Ag), with concentrations diminishing along with the purification process. The most important analysis was related to dielectric parameters, and it was concluded that the powders obtained by the proposed technology could efficiently substitute scarce raw materials actually used as additives in composites, coatings and paints, mainly due to their high permittivity (above 6 in all frequency domains) and, respectively, dielectric loss factor (above 0.2 in all cases, in all frequency domains). We estimate that the technology described in this paper is a sustainable one according to the concept of circular economy, as it could reduce, by a minimum of 15%, the embodied GHG emissions generated from information and communications technology (ICT) devices by advanced recycling.

Background: Spontaneous remission of cancer is a rare and poorly understood phenomenon characterized by complete or partial remission of a malignancy in the absence of or with inadequate treatment. The underlying mechanism for such occurrences is poorly understood, however, immune mechanisms seem to play an important role in such cases. In recent years increasingly more data have become available in favor of the clinical benefit of low levels of chimerism in hematologic malignancies. One such instance of naturally occurring low-level chimerism is feto-maternal microchimerism which has been shown to influence cancer progression and, in some instances, to be a protective factor against malignancy. Case report: We report a case of a young female patient with aggressive primary mediastinal large B cell lymphoma refractory to two lines of chemo-immunotherapy achieving sustained complete metabolic remission of tumor while pregnant with twins. Results: A focus on feto-maternal microchimerism during and after pregnancy revealed transient levels of feto-maternal microchimerism in the peripheral blood of the patient as measured by quantifying the Y-chromosome-linked SRY gene. Conclusions: Microchimerism presents significant potential for enhancing our comprehension of disease mechanisms, uncovering novel therapeutic targets, and refining diagnostic and treatment approaches, especially concerning cancer.

Aedes albopictus is considered one of the major invasive species in the world and can transmit viruses such as dengue, Zika, or chikungunya. The Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) can be used to suppress the native populations of Ae. albopictus. Mark–release–recapture (MRR) studies are crucial to support the development of the release strategy during the SIT application. Meanwhile, weather conditions can affect the MRR trial’s results and it is critical to understand the influence of climatic factors on the results. In October 2022, 84,000 irradiated sterile males were released for three consecutive weeks in Faro, Southern Portugal. Mosquitoes were recaptured by human landing collection (HLC) one, two, four, and six days after release. Generalized linear models with a negative binomial family and log function were used to estimate the factors associated with the number of recaptured mosquitoes, prevalence ratios, and the 95% confidence intervals (CIs). A total of 84,000 sterile male mosquitoes were released, with 528 recaptured (0.8%) by HLC. The prevalence of recaptured mosquitoes was 23% lower when the wind intensity was moderate. Marked sterile males had an average median distance travelled of 88.7 m. The median probability of daily survival and the average life expectancy were 61.6% and 2.1 days, respectively. The wild male population estimate was 443.33 males/ha. Despite no statistically significant association being found with humidity, temperature, and precipitation, it is important to consider weather conditions during MRR trial analyses to obtain the best determinant estimation and a more efficient application of the SIT in an integrated vector management program.

Background: In systemic sclerosis (SSc), cardiac involvement is frequent, heterogeneous, and related to a poor prognosis. Due to a longer life expectancy, the development of degenerative aortic stenosis (AS) is not uncommon. The aim of this article is to report the characteristics of AS in SSc, analyzing the rate of progression, the management, and the outcome. Methods: This is a case series conducted at the Department of Cardiology of Monaldi Hospital, Naples, Italy. Results: From January 2007 to December 2022, we analyzed 234 patients with SSc. Ten/234 patients (4.3%) showed severe AS and were included in the analysis (age 75.5 years [IQR 58–84], nine females). Nine had limited and one diffuse SSc. Two patients were in NHYA/WHO II and eight in NYHA/WHO III. All had degenerative three-leaflet AS. Two patients showed severe AS at the first evaluation, and eight developed severe AS during the follow-up, with a time progression from moderate to severe AS of 3.2 ± 1.1 years (progression rate −0.190 ± 0.012 cm2/year for aortic valve area, 8.6 ± 6.1 mmHg/year for mean aortic gradient, 16 ± 7 mmHg/year for peak aortic gradient, and 0.5 ± 0.3 m/s/year for aortic peak velocity). Seven out of 10 patients underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), one underwent surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR), one was left untreated, and one was on a waiting list for TAVI. No major complications after TAVI or SAVR occurred. At a mean follow-up of 5.9 ± 3.9 years, eight patients are alive and two died. Conclusion: Severe AS is a relevant cardiac complication of SSc and must be considered in the screening and during the follow-up. Its rapid progression rate may tentatively be due to autoimmunity, degenerative burden, and chronic inflammation.

The anatomy of the human shoulder predisposes the neurovascular bundle to compression at different levels of the thoracic outlet during abduction of the arm. There are four possible levels of compression at the thoracic outlet pathway: at the costo-clavicular angle, the inter-scalenic angle, under the pectoralis minor muscle or at the level of the humeral head. The positional thoracic outlet compression (TOC) often remains completely asymptomatic. When symptomatic, compressions are collectively referred to as thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and may require surgery if physical therapy fails to improve symptoms. The “thoracic outlet compression with complications or sequelae” (the acronym of which is “TOC-CS”, which can be simplified as “TOX”) will almost invariably lead to surgery to release the compression, and other possible treatment targeting the complications as required. There is a continuum between TOC, TOS and TOX, which are simply different clinical stages of the same mechanical issue, just like the Rutherford grades represent different stages of lower extremity arterial disease. We believe that discriminating between TOC, TOS and TOX clarifies clinical definitions and their respective treatment options. TOC is to be considered as a physiological positional phenomenon, TOS requires medical or surgical treatment and surgery should be considered as a primary option in TOX.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) came into consideration in recent years as a promising, non-invasive form of neuromodulation for individuals suffering from mild cognitive impairment (MCI). MCI represents a transitional stage between normal cognitive aging and more severe cognitive decline, which appears in neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Numerous studies have shown that tDCS can have several useful effects in patients with MCI. It is believed to enhance cognitive functions, including memory and attention, potentially slowing down the progression of neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. tDCS is believed to work by modulating neuronal activity and promoting synaptic plasticity in the brain regions associated with cognition. Moreover, tDCS is generally considered safe and well-tolerated, making it an attractive option for long-term therapeutic use in MCI. However, further research is needed to determine the optimal stimulation parameters and long-term effects of tDCS in this population, as well as its potential to serve as a complementary therapy alongside other interventions for MCI. In this review, we included 16 randomized clinical trials containing patients with MCI who were treated with tDCS. We aim to provide important evidence for the cognitive enhancement using tDCS in patients with MCI, summarizing the effects and conclusions found in several clinical trials, and discuss its main mechanisms.

The main aim of this case series was to report the clinical and radiographic outcomes of 22 one-piece zirconia dental implants positioned in 19 patients to restore single edentulisms and followed up for at least 2 years. The mean observation period was 58.18 months. At the last follow-up visit, no issues, such as foreign body sensation, discomfort or pain, were reported by the patients. No implant showed signs of infection with suppuration or implant mobility. Marginal bone levels (MBL) were assessed through standardized dental radiographs and a dedicated software. The mean distance between the implant head and the first detectable bone to implant contact was calculated at the mesial and distal aspect of each implant. The mean MBL at baseline was 1.82 ± 0.63 mm while the mean MBL at the last follow-up visit was 2.57 ± 0.72 mm. The results obtained in the present case series over a mean follow-up period of 58.18 months (range 27–96) showed that one-piece zirconia dental implants could be an alternative option to support single crowns in patients requiring metal-free restorations. Nevertheless, further better-controlled research featuring an adequate study design and longer follow-up is needed in order to clarify advantages and limitations which are related to this treatment modality.

This study aimed to evaluate consumer perception and acceptance of non-alcoholic cocktails compared to their traditional alcoholic counterparts in a restaurant setting. Three popular cocktails—gintonic, mojito, and mule—and their non-alcoholic versions (NoLo) were assessed following a three × two experimental design. A total of 600 participants (approximately 100 per cocktail) participated at the Basque Culinary Center’s restaurant. Participants rated their liking of the cocktails using a nine-point hedonic scale and provided open-ended responses about the sensory characteristics and the consumption contexts or emotions evoked by the different cocktails. The results showed differences in the acceptance of the six cocktails, but no significant differences between the alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions, suggesting that NoLo alternatives were similarly well-received. Open-ended responses were analyzed using latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) to uncover latent topics, and Fisher’s exact test and correspondence analysis were used to identify differences in the mentioned topics per cocktail. Specific sensory attributes, emotions, and contexts were associated with each type of cocktail, but no differences were found between the alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions. These findings demonstrate the viability of non-alcoholic cocktails in real consumption settings, eliciting similar liking scores, sensory attributes, contexts, and emotions in consumers. This study also highlighted the potential of natural language processing techniques for analyzing open-ended questions.

In this work an innovative approach was developed to address a significant challenge in the field of radiation dosimetry: the accurate measurement of spatial dose distributions using Fricke gel dosimeters. Hydrogels are widely used in radiation dosimetry due to their ability to simulate the tissue-equivalent properties of human tissue, making them ideal for measuring and mapping radiation dose distributions. Among the various gel dosimeters, Fricke gels exploit the radiation-induced oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions and are particularly notable due to their sensitivity. The concentration of ferric ions can be measured using various techniques, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or spectrophotometry. While Fricke gels offer several advantages, a significant hurdle to their widespread application is the diffusion of ferric ions within the gel matrix. This phenomenon leads to a blurring of the dose distribution over time, compromising the accuracy of dose measurements. To mitigate the issue of ferric ion diffusion, researchers have explored various strategies such as the incorporation of additives or modification of the gel composition to either reduce the mobility of ferric ions or stabilize the gel matrix. The computational method proposed leverages the power of artificial intelligence, particularly deep learning, to mitigate the effects of ferric ion diffusion that can compromise measurement precision. By employing Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs), the method introduces a novel way to apply physical laws directly within the learning process, optimizing the network to adhere to the principles governing ion diffusion. This is particularly advantageous for solving the partial differential equations that describe the diffusion process in 2D and 3D. By inputting the spatial distribution of ferric ions at a given time, along with boundary conditions and the diffusion coefficient, the model can backtrack to accurately reconstruct the original ion distribution. This capability is crucial for enhancing the fidelity of 3D spatial dose measurements, ensuring that the data reflect the true dose distribution without the artifacts introduced by ion migration. Here, multidimensional models able to handle 2D and 3D data were developed and tested against dose distributions numerically evolved in time from 20 to 100 h. The results in terms of various metrics show a significant agreement in both 2D and 3D dose distributions. In particular, the mean square error of the prediction spans the range 1×10−6–1×10−4, while the gamma analysis results in a 90–100% passing rate with 3%/2 mm, depending on the elapsed time, the type of distribution modeled and the dimensionality. This method could expand the applicability of Fricke gel dosimeters to a wider range of measurement tasks, from simple planar dose assessments to intricate volumetric analyses. The proposed technique holds great promise for overcoming the limitations imposed by ion diffusion in Fricke gel dosimeters.

Background and Objectives: Ovarian cancer, including tubal and peritoneal cancer, is the third most common gynecological cancer and the leading cause of death from gynecological malignancies in developed countries. This study explores the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in determining the optimal duration of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) for advanced ovarian cancer. It also investigates the correlation between NLR dynamics and the KELIM score, a chemosensitivity marker, to enhance individualized therapeutic strategies. Materials and Methods: A total of 79 patients underwent NACT followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS) or palliative care. The data collected included demographic information, tumor characteristics, treatment modalities, and laboratory parameters. The baseline NLR (NLR-T0) and post-therapeutic NLR (NLR-T1) were calculated, and their variation (NLR∆) was analyzed. The KELIM score was determined using CA-125 values. Results: Patients with a high baseline NLR (≥2.5) had significantly worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) compared to those with a low NLR (Conclusions: The NLR is a valuable prognostic marker for assessing treatment response and guiding NACT duration in advanced ovarian cancer.

The vaginal microbiota (VMB) plays a crucial role in women’s health from puberty to menopause. Traditional studies have focused on the microorganisms present within the vaginal environment and their roles in disease onset. However, the dynamic relationship between the VMB and its host remains underexplored. Common narratives emphasize the presence of Lactobacilli spp. as an indicator of vaginal health, yet this does not fully explain the occurrence of asymptomatic yet significant dysbiosis. Moreover, a wide array of bacterial types can inhabit the vaginal environment, suggesting that probiotic Lactobacilli could offer a natural, safe solution for balancing vaginal microbiota. This review examines the current literature on VMB, key factors affecting its composition, and the changes it undergoes during different life stages. Given the health-promoting potential of probiotics, we also examine their role in maintaining a healthy VMB and overall women’s health throughout life.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever. The main reservoirs for this bacterium, which can lead to human infection, in our region are typically cattle, goats, and sheep. In animals, C. burnetii infection is often detected due to reproductive problems. European Member States are required to report confirmed cases annually, but the lack of uniform reporting methods makes the data rather inconsistent. The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise is involved in official controls to identify the causes of abortions, monitor suspected or positive herds, evaluate suspected infections in pets and humans, monitor the spread in wildlife, etc. In this paper, we summarize the presence of C. burnetii over the last five years (2019–2023). Additionally, a detailed overview of C. burnetii infection in wild and domestic animals is provided. Five hundred sixty animals—including cattle; goats; sheep; wild animals, such as deer, boars, wolves, roe deer, owls, and otters; buffalo; dogs; horses; cats; and a donkey—and six human samples were tested by real-time PCR on the transposase gene IS1111 to detect C. burnetii. The MST profile was identified in some of the samples. Outbreaks of C. burnetii occurred in four herds. In one of them, it was possible to follow the outbreak from inception to eradication by evaluating the effect of vaccination on real-time PCR Ct values. A total of 116 animals tested positive for C. burnetii, including 73 goats, 42 sheep, and one bovine. None of the other samples tested positive. The strains for which the ST was performed were identified as ST79, a strain that has been present in the area for more than ten years. The effect of vaccination on the reduction of positive samples and the variation of real-time PCR Ct values was evaluated in strict correlation.

This paper describes a process to obtain magnetite functionalized with carboxymethylcellulose via coprecipitation by means of a preliminary stabilization of magnetite in citric acid. The magnetite assemblies successfully passed in vitro and in vivo tests of bio-compatibility. The measured values for the dielectric loss factor are remarkably high, a prerequisite for the assemblies’ potential use as contrast agents. Broadband THz spectroscopy analysis was performed to identify the most relevant frequency bands (here, 3.2–4 THz) where the signal difference between normal cells and cancer cells is relevant for the particles’ potential use as contrast agents for THz imaging, with applications in oncology.

A complete uterine septum, with a double cervix and vaginal septum, is a complex and rare congenital genital tract anomaly. The diagnosis is difficult and often challenging, requiring complex imaging investigations and diagnostic hysteroscopy. The benefit of hysteroscopic metroplasty for this uterine malformation is still the subject of dispute. However, the potential benefits of obtaining pregnancies and reducing the rate of abortions make this surgical method a desirable one. We present a series of three cases with U2bC2V1 malformation that were diagnosed via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in which hysteroscopic removal of the uterine septum and resection of the longitudinal vaginal septum were performed, with the preservation of the two cervixes. All patients became pregnant after the hysteroscopic intervention and reported an improvement in dyspareunia and dysmenorrhea.

Desert strains of the genus Chroococcidiopsis are among the most desiccation-resistant cyanobacteria capable of anhydrobiosis. The accumulation of two sugars, sucrose and trehalose, facilitates the entrance of anhydrobiotes into a reversible state of dormancy by stabilizing cellular components upon water removal. This study aimed to evaluate, at the atomistic level, the role of trehalose in desiccation resistance by using as a model system the 30S ribosomal subunit of the desert cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis sp. 029. Molecular dynamic simulations provided atomistic evidence regarding its protective role on the 30S molecular structure. Trehalose forms an enveloping shell around the ribosomal subunit and stabilizes the structures through a network of direct interactions. The simulation confirmed that trehalose actively interacts with the 30S ribosomal subunit and that, by replacing water molecules, it ensures ribosomal structural integrity during desiccation, thus enabling protein synthesis to be carried out upon rehydration.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) prevalence and diabetes mellitus (DM) prevalence are continuously increasing worldwide. The strong relationship between DM and PAD is highlighted by recent evidence. PAD diagnosis in diabetic patients is very important, particularly in patients with diabetic foot disease (DFD); however, it is often made difficult by the characteristics of such diseases. Diagnosing PAD makes it possible to identify patients at a very high cardiovascular risk who require intensive treatment in terms of risk factor modification and medical therapy. The purpose of this review is to discuss the diagnostic methods that allow for a diagnosis of PAD in diabetic patients. Non-invasive tests that address PAD diagnosis will be discussed, such as the ankle-brachial index (ABI), toe pressure (TP), and transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcPO2). Furthermore, imaging methods, such as duplex ultrasound (DUS), computed tomography angiography (CTA), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and digital subtraction angiography (DSA), are described because they allow for diagnosing the anatomical localization and severity of artery stenosis or occlusion in PAD. Non-invasive tests will also be discussed in terms of their ability to assess foot perfusion. Foot perfusion assessment is crucial in the diagnosis of critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most advanced PAD stage, particularly in DFD patients. The impacts of PAD diagnosis and CLI identification in diabetic patients are clinically relevant to prevent amputation and mortality.

Caffeic acid (CA), a hydrophobic polyphenol with various pharmacological activities, exhibits a low aqueous solubility and sensitivity to light. In order to improve its chemical properties and overcome the limits in its application, the compound was loaded in P123 micelles (MCs) prepared using two polymer concentrations (10 and 20% w/w, MC10 and MC20). The micelles were characterised in terms of the size distribution, zeta potential, drug encapsulation efficiency, rheology, and cumulative drug release. Micellar formulations exhibited sizes in the range of 11.70 and 17.70 nm and a good polydispersion, indicating the formation of relatively small-sized micelles, which is favourable for drug delivery applications. Additionally, the stability and antioxidant profiles of the free CA and the CA loaded in micelles were studied. The results obtained on the free CA showed the formation of photodegradation products endowed with higher DPPH scavenging activity with respect to the pure compound. Instead, it was found that the incorporation of CA into the micelles significantly increased its solubility and decreased the photodegradation rate. Overall, the results indicate the successful formation of P123 micelles loaded with CA, with promising characteristics such as a small size, good encapsulation efficiency, sustained release profile, and improved light stability. These findings suggest the potentiality of these micelles as a delivery system for CA, thus enhancing its bioavailability.

Genomic surveillance based on sequencing the entire genetic code of SARS-CoV-2 involves monitoring and studying genetic changes and variations in disease-causing organisms such as viruses and bacteria. By tracing the virus, it is possible to prevent epidemic spread in the community, ensuring a ‘precision public health’ strategy. A peptide-based design was applied to provide an efficacious strategy that is able to counteract any emerging viral variant of concern dynamically and promptly to affect the outcomes of a pandemic at an early stage while waiting for the production of the anti-variant-specific vaccine, which require longer times. The inhibition of the interaction between the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and one of the cellular receptors (DPP4) that its receptors routinely bind to infect human cells is an intriguing therapeutic approach to prevent the virus from entering human cells. Among the other modalities developed for this purpose, peptides surely offer unique advantages, including ease of synthesis, serum stability, low immunogenicity and toxicity, and small production and distribution chain costs. Here, we obtained a potent new inhibitor based on the rearrangement of a previously identified peptide that has been rationally designed on a cell dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) sequence, a ubiquitous membrane protein known to bind the RBD-SPIKE domain of the virus. This novel peptide (named DPP4-derived), conceived as an endogenous “drug”, is capable of targeting the latest tested variants with a high affinity, reducing the VSV* DG-Fluc pseudovirus Omicron’s infection capacity by up to 14%, as revealed by in vitro testing in human Calu-3 cells. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) confirmed the binding affinity of the new DPP4-derived peptide with Omicron variant RBD.

In the current study, a smart release system responsive to temperature was developed to improve the efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in antibacterial therapy. The nanovesicles designed consist of a non-ionic surfactant, SPAN60, cholesterol and a phase change material (PCM) as a thermoresponsive gating material. Niosomes were prepared using an increasing amount of PCM and characterized in terms of size, zeta potential, colloidal stability and thermoresponsive properties. The vesicles that developed were homogenous in size, had good biocompatibility and stability for up to 3 months and demonstrated thermoresponsive behavior. A low drug leakage was observed at 37 °C, while a rapid release occurred at 42 °C, due to the faster diffusion rate of the drug trough the melted PCM. This controllable drug release capacity allows us to avoid premature drug release, minimizing unwanted and toxic effects and ensuring a long retention time in the nanodevice so that it reaches the infected sites. In addition, TC-loaded niosomes were screened to investigate their antibacterial activity against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) assays. An interesting temperature-dependent antibacterial activity was observed against some bacterial strains: the niosomes activity against S. epidermis, for example, was improved by the temperature increase, as suggested by a reduction in MIC values from 112.81 to 14.10 μM observed at 37 and 42 °C, respectively. Taken together, the thermoresponsive platform developed allows us to use lower antibiotic amounts while ensuring therapeutic efficacy and, so, will advance the development of a novel antibacterial agent in clinical practice.

This study investigates the effects of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) on the gut microbiome of overweight adults. Fifty-eight participants (twenty males, thirty-eight females) aged 18–65 years with a BMI range of 30–40 kg/m2 were recruited. Participants were randomised to receive PEA (n = 36) or a placebo (n = 22) for 12 weeks. Microbiota composition, richness, diversity, and metabolic functions, faecal short chain fatty acids and calprotectin, pathology markers, and health-related questionnaires were analysed throughout the 12 weeks of supplementation. PEA supplementation significantly reduced triglyceride levels and IL-2 concentrations. No significant differences were found in the overall microbiota composition between the groups, and microbiota richness and diversity remained consistent for both groups. Functional analysis demonstrated no differences in functional richness and diversity, but specific pathways were modified. PEA supplementation resulted in a decrease in the abundance of pathways related to aromatic compound degradation, NAD interconversion, and L-glutamate degradation, while pathways associated with molybdopterin biosynthesis and O-antigen building blocks exhibited increased abundance. Increased production of O-antigen results in smooth LPS associated with reduced pathogenic stealth and persistence. PEA supplementation may influence specific microbial species, metabolic pathways, and reduce serum triglyceride and IL-2 concentration, shedding light on the intricate relationship between PEA, the microbiome, and host health.

Flourensia cernua and Jatropha dioica are non-timber forest species that grow in the desert regions of northern Mexico. Currently, they are recognized as a viable alternative to traditional remedies used to address certain ailments. However, the low yields of bioactive compounds obtained propitiate the use of more effective extraction techniques such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) in combination with statistical models such as Taguchi to maximize the yields of bioactive compounds. The objective of the research was to determine the optimal conditions for maximizing the yields of purified polyphenolic compounds from F. cernua and J. dioica using the Taguchi statistical model. In addition, we evaluated the total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity (ABTS•+, FRAP, and OH• hydroxyl radical inhibition), and the in vitro evaluation of α-amylase inhibition and ex vivo hemolysis inhibition. Furthermore, a functional group analysis was conducted using FTIR. The optimization process revealed that the maximum yields of bioactive compounds for F. cernua and J. dioica were achieved with a particle size of 0.25 mm and 0.30 mm, temperatures of 60 °C for both, a water–ethanol concentration of 50% for both, and extraction times of 30 min and 5 min, respectively. The matrix bioactive compounds obtained contain flavonoid-type phenolic compounds, which exhibit properties such as inhibiting free radicals and acting as reducing agents; inhibiting α-amylase activity, which is involved in carbohydrate metabolism; and protecting red blood cells from damage by reactive oxygen species. Finally, the FTIR analysis allowed for the identification of functional groups associated with the polyphenolic compounds (O–H, C–H, C–C, C=O). These results suggest that both non-timber forest species are a rich source of bioactive compounds with potential for application in the agri-food and pharmaceutical industries However, it is necessary to carry out compound identification as well as toxicity analyses to guarantee the safety of these bioactive compounds.

Background: Ultrasound-guided kidney biopsy is an essential diagnostics method that can increase the accuracy of the differential diagnosis between acute and chronic nephropathies. In addition, it will help clinicians perform an etiologic diagnosis, issue a prognosis, and orient therapy for the majority of parenchymal nephropathies. Due to the relative invasiveness and potential adverse effects, the use of kidney biopsies is limited among practitioners. Results: Twenty-eight dogs, of mixed breed and variable ages, of which 11 (39, 29%) were males and 17 (60, 71%) were females, were examined and underwent an ultrasound-guided kidney biopsy to establish a definitive diagnosis. The patients were presented with a variety of diffuse nephropathies, such as kidney lymphoma: 1 (3.57%), glomerulonephritis: 13 (46.43%), tubulointerstitial nephritis: 11 (39.29%), and nephrocalcinosis. A total of 3 (10.71%) of 18 (64.29%) were in acute kidney injury, and 10 (35.71%) were CKD patients. The type and the severity of the kidney lesions were correlated with changes in the urinary n-acetyl-beta-d-glucosaminidase index (iNAG. To quantify the side effects of percutaneous kidney biopsy, the magnitude of post-biopsy hematuria and changes in urinary iNAG activity were evaluated. The results indicate a significant post-biopsy increase in the urinary iNAG activity in all the patients that underwent this procedure (100.08 ± 34.45 U/g), with a pre-biopsy iNAG vs. 147.65 ± 33.26 U/g post-biopsy iNAG (p < 0.001), suggesting an intensification in the kidney tubular damage that comes consecutives to kidney puncture and sampling. Transitory macro- or microhematuria were constant findings in all the dogs that underwent ultrasound-guided kidney biopsy, but the magnitude and extent could not be associated with the platelet count (PLT 109/L), aPTT (s), and PT (s) levels in our patients, and they were also resolved after 12–24 h without therapeutic interventions. Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided renal biopsy was shown to be a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure that causes transient and limited effects on kidney structures. Although these effects were minor and resolved without intervention, we feel that the benefit of obtaining higher-quality biopsied tissue outweighs the higher risks associated with this procedure.

The present study aimed to investigate the impact on nutritional and functional properties of dried kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis cv. Sungold) slices during conservation for 120 days in sealed containers in the dark at 25 °C. For this purpose, kiwifruits slices were dried at two different temperatures, 40 and 55 °C, for 30 and 25 h, respectively. Fresh and dried kiwi slices were analyzed for their pH, activity water, total solid soluble (TSS), color, titratable acidity, total phenols (TPC) and flavonoids content (TFC), organic acids, and radical scavenging activities. Analysis carried out on the dehydrated samples showed a good aptitude of kiwi material towards the drying process. Particularly, it has been observed that the drying treatment at low temperature helped to preserve the nutraceutical properties of the fruits. In fact, samples treated at 40 °C (KLT) showed at day 0 (T0) the highest TPC and TFC with values of 979.42 Gallic Acid Equivalents (GAE)/100 g of dried weight (dw) and 281.84 mg catechin equivalents (CTE)/100 g dw even if compared with fresh kiwi slices sample (FKF). Moreover, KLT also exhibited the highest values of antioxidant activity (1657 mmol Trolox/100 g dw). After 120 days storage, all dried samples showed a high ascorbic acid content (429–339 mg/100 g dw fruits) and only a slight variation of physicochemical parameters. Textural Parameters (hardness, springiness, cohesiveness, gumminess, and chewiness), apart from resilience results, showed significant differences between kiwifruit dried at 55 °C and at 50 °C (KLT and KHT, respectively). Color and aroma intensity were the main sensory descriptors with higher scores.

Many musicologists and researchers of popular music have recently stressed the omnipresence of covers in today’s music industry. In the sociolinguistics of music, however, studio-recorded covers and their potential differences from ‘original’ compositions have certainly been acknowledged in passing, but very few sociolinguists concerned with the study of song seem to have systematically explored how language use may differ in such re-imagined musical outputs. This article reports on a study which examines the language use of 45 blues artists from three distinct time periods (viz., 1960s, 1980s, and 2010s) and three specific social groups (viz., African American; non-African American, US-based; and non-African American, non-US based) distributed over 270 studio-recorded original and cover performances. Through gradient boosting decision tree classification, it aims to analyze the artists’ use of eight phonological and lexico-grammatical features that are traditionally associated with African American English (viz., /aɪ/ monophthongization, post-consonantal word-final /t/ deletion, post-consonantal word-final /d/ deletion, alveolar nasal /n/ in ultimas, post-vocalic word-final /r/ deletion, copula deletion, third-person singular deletion, and not-contraction). Our analysis finds song type (i.e., the distinction between covers and originals) to have no meaningful impact on artists’ use of the examined features of African American English. Instead, our analysis reveals how performers seem to rely on these features to a great extent and do so markedly consistently, regardless of factors such as time period, socio-cultural background, or song type. This paper hence builds on our previous work on the language use of blues performers by further teasing out the complex indexical and iconic relationships between features of African American English, authenticity, and the blues genre in its various manifestations of time, place, and performance types.

Recently, smell and taste disorders have seen renewed interest, as these symptoms are frequent complications of SARS-CoV-2 infection, since approximately 60% of patients affected by COVID-19 have shown olfactory and gustatory alterations. Otolaryngology pays attention to taste and smell abnormalities (TSAs), especially when associated with oncology. TSAs are common symptoms in people affected by cancer, yet they are ignored and underestimated. The clinical outcome of TSAs in cancer evidences the importance of identifying them with chemotherapy or radiotherapy in general, and they are associated with many types of cancer. We recognize the findings of the literature on TSAs in cancer, evaluating how it is important to consider and identify these disorders concerning reduced food enjoyment or inappropriate nutrient intake, and modulating the nutritional status, quality of life, and impact of therapy. This review aims to critically evaluate and recognize the assessment and clinical perspectives of taste and smell disorders in a cancer population.

Background: This work proposes the development of new vesicular systems based on anesthetic compounds (lidocaine (LID) and capsaicin (CA)) and antimicrobial agents (amino acid-based surfactants from phenylalanine), with a focus on physicochemical characterization and the evaluation of antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties. Method: Phenylalanine surfactants were characterized via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Different niosomal systems based on capsaicin, lidocaine, cationic phenylalanine surfactants, and dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) were characterized in terms of size, polydispersion index (PI), zeta potential, and encapsulation efficiency using dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmitted light microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Furthermore, the interaction of the pure compounds used to prepare the niosomal formulations with DPPC monolayers was determined using a Langmuir balance. The antibacterial activity of the vesicular systems and their biocompatibility were evaluated, and molecular docking studies were carried out to obtain information about the mechanism by which these compounds interact with bacteria. Results: The stability and reduced size of the analyzed niosomal formulations demonstrate their potential in pharmaceutical applications. The nanosystems exhibit promising antimicrobial activity, marking a significant advancement in pharmaceutical delivery systems with dual therapeutic properties. The biocompatibility of some formulations underscores their viability. Conclusions: The proposed niosomal formulations could constitute an important advance in the pharmaceutical field, offering delivery systems for combined therapies thanks to the pharmacological properties of the individual components.

The vaccination of pregnant women against influenza and COVID-19 may reduce the risk of severe illness in both the women of this population and their babies. Although the risks of non-vaccination are more serious than the side effects, maternal immunization is still the least-used method of prevention due to a lack of information leading to concerns about the safety and efficacy of vaccines, resulting in a low prevalence rate among pregnant individuals. Our study investigates vaccination coverage and the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions of COVID-19 in pregnant women at a university hospital. A questionnaire was created with the following three scores: a vaccination propensity score, a knowledge score and a hesitancy score. The first observation in the results was the very low number of immunized women (only 4.7% received their first dose). The main barrier towards vaccination was found to be fear of adverse events. We noticed a low percentage of influenza and diphtheria tetanus pertussis vaccination compared to other studies. Vaccination propensity was higher when healthcare workers educated their patients. As immunization is a crucial part of public health policy, measuring coverage to identify gaps and monitor trends, especially for individuals considered at high risk, and developing new strategies in order to increase awareness of vaccination during pregnancy is particularly timely and relevant.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterized by a highly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). The aim of this study is to determine the potential significant TME immune markers of long-term survival. Methods: We retrospectively included patients with a diagnosis of resectable PDAC having undergone upfront surgery. Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining using tissue microarray for PD-L1, CD3, CD4, CD8, FOXP3, CD20, iNOS and CD163 was performed in order to characterize the TME. The primary endpoint was long-term survival, defined as the Overall Survival > 24 months from surgery. Results: A total of 38 consecutive patients were included, and 14 (36%) of them were long-term survivors. Long-term survivors showed a higher density of CD8+ lymphocytes intra- and peri-acinar (p = 0.08), and a higher CD8/FOXP3 intra- and peri-tumoral ratio (p = 0.05). A low density of intra- and peri-tumoral FOXP3 infiltration is a good predictor of long-term survival (p = 0.04). A significant association of the low density of intra- and peri-tumoral tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) iNOS+ with long-term survival was detected (p = 0.04). Conclusions: Despite the retrospective nature and small sample size, our study showed that the high infiltration of CD8+ lymphocytes and low infiltration of FOXP3+ and TAMs iNOS+ are predictors of good prognosis. A preoperative assessment of these potential immune markers could be useful and determinant in the staging process and in PDAC management.

Background and aim: Because they are unaware of the potential adverse effects of medications, people frequently self-medicate as a form of self-care. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with health literacy and the propensity to self-medicate among the primary healthcare clientele of the city of Hail, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This research employed a cross-sectional approach with the participation of 383 primary health center clientele of the Hail Region of Saudi Arabia. Participation was enacted via convenience sampling from December 2022 to February 2023. The data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The investigation utilized descriptive statistics as well as multiple linear regression and correlation for the data analysis. Results: Participants who were aged 30 years and above, single, had a college degree, were non-Saudi, had a white-collar occupation and received information from the internet/Google/YouTube had a significant relationship (p < 0.05) with health literacy. On the self-medication scale (SMS), there were significant relationships with age, marital status, educational level and occupation (p < 0.05). The nationality and source of information factors related to health had a positively significant effect on health literacy (p < 0.01), while middle age (24–29 years) had a positive effect on the self-medication scores (p < 0.01). There was a significant positive correlation between the health literacy screening scale (BRIEF) and the self-medication scale (SMS) scores (r = 421, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Age of 30 years old or above, single status, a college degree, non-Saudi status, white-collar occupation and receiving information from the internet/Google/YouTube were all significant for health literacy. There were also significant relationships with the SMS scores for age, marital status, educational level and occupation. The factors affecting health literacy were older participant age, nationality and the source of information regarding health. Conversely, among the participants, being in the middle-aged group (24–29 years) was a factor that affected their self-medication scores. There was a significant positive correlation between the health literacy screening scale (BRIEF) and the self-medication scale (SMS).

Respiratory diseases significantly affect intensive pig finishing farms, causing production losses and increased antimicrobial use (AMU). Lesion scoring at slaughter has been recognized as a beneficial practice to evaluate herd management. The integrated analysis of abattoir lesion scores and AMU data could improve decision-making by providing feedback to veterinarians and farmers on the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments, thus rationalizing their use. This study compared lung and pleural lesion scores collected at Italian pig slaughterhouses with on-farm AMU, estimated through a treatment index per 100 days (TI100). Overall, 24,752 pig carcasses, belonging to 236 batches from 113 finishing farms, were inspected. Bronchopneumonia and chronic pleuritis were detected in 55% and 48% of the examined pigs, respectively. Antimicrobials were administered in 97% of the farms during the six months prior to slaughter (median TI100 = 5.2), notwithstanding compliance with the mandatory withdrawal period. EMA category B (critical) antimicrobials were administered in 15.2% of cases (median TI100 = 0.06). The lung score was not associated with the total AMU, but significant, positive associations were found with the past use of critical antimicrobials (p = 0.041) and macrolides (p = 0.044). This result highlights the potential of abattoir lung lesion monitoring to rationalize antimicrobial stewardship efforts, contributing to AMU reduction.

This paper investigates the economic competitiveness of hydrogen-powered trucks. It reviews the growing number of papers that provide an estimate of the total cost of ownership (TCO) of hydrogen-powered trucks relative to their diesel equivalents. It examines the methodology applied, the variables considered, the data used for estimation, and the results obtained. All reviewed studies conclude that hydrogen-powered trucks are not currently cost-competitive, while they might become competitive after 2030. The conclusion holds across truck types and sizes, hydrogen pathways, mission profiles, and countries. However, we find that there is still a huge area of uncertainty regarding the purchase price of hydrogen-powered trucks and the cost of hydrogen, which hampers the reliability of the results obtained. Various areas of methodological improvements are suggested.
