In this paper, it is revealed that random exploration and attraction of the best (REAB) are two underlying procedures in many swarm intelligence algorithms. This is particularly shown in two of the most known swarm algorithms: the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and gray wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithms. From this observation, it is here proposed that instead of building algorithms based on a narrative derived from observing some animal behavior, it is more convenient to focus on algorithms that perform REAB procedures; that is, to build algorithms to make a wide and efficient explorations of the search space and then gradually make that the best-evaluated search agent to attract the rest of the swarm. Following this general idea, two REAB-based algorithms are proposed; one derived from the PSO and one derived from the GWO, called REAB-PSO and REAB-GWO, respectively. To easily and succinctly express both algorithms, variable-sized open balls are employed. A comparison of proposed procedures in this paper and the original PSO and GWO using a controller tuning problem as a test bench show a significant improvement of the REAB-based algorithms over their original counterparts. Ideas here exposed can be used to derive new swarm intelligence algorithms.

In Colombia, research on Salmonella concerning animal health, veterinary diagnostics, and epidemiology within the primary production chain is limited. This study aimed to analyze the published data about Salmonella in the Colombian primary pig production chain from 2009 to mid-2024. This involved an exploratory literature review using systematic search strategies, including articles, graduate studies, conference presentations, and technical reports from the selected period. Of the 35 studies reviewed, 30 met the inclusion criteria, with eleven being from the grey literature. The pooled prevalence of Salmonella spp. on Colombian farms was 8.9%, while the seroprevalence ranged from 27 to 40%. Risk factors associated with the presence of this bacterium on farms included aspects such as water sources, pest control, the farm type, and management practices. Few scientific publications address the presence of this pathogen in primary pig production in Colombia, underscoring the need to raise awareness within the academic and production communities about the importance of conducting and reporting new studies and cases.

Pleurotus ostreatus, due to its saprophytic nature, can extract nutrients and bioactive compounds from the substrate on which it is grown. This study aimed to assess the effect of adding spent coffee grounds (SCG) and potato peel (PPW) in the wheat straw substrate formulation to grow over the production indicators, physicochemical, techno-functional, total chemical compounds, and antioxidant properties. Treatments were described as follows: T1, wheat straw at 100%; T2, wheat straw at 80% + 10% of SCG + 10% of PPW; T3, wheat straw at 70% + 15% of SCG + 15% of PPW; T4, wheat straw at 60% + 20% of SCG + 20% of PPW. After P. ostreatus growth, non-differences were found in production indicators for T1–T4, including biological efficiency, production rate, and yield. With respect to P. ostreatus dried powders, T1–T4 showed pH values near neutrality concerning soy protein (SP), and the color samples were beige. Also, T2 and T3 exert higher water-holding (WHC) values, while T1–T4 exert higher oil-holding (OHC) and emulsifying capacity (EC) values concerning SP, in dependence on the growth substrate. T1–T4 showed lower swelling (SC) and T1–T3 lower gelling capacity (GC) values. Regarding total chemical compounds and antioxidant properties of P. ostreatus extracts, growth substrate and solvent extraction have an effect on metabolite content and antiradical and reducing power properties. The multivariate analysis revealed that T2 water extracts exert the highest total tannin (TTC) and protocatechuic acid contents (PAC), as well as the highest antiradical (RCSA) and reducing power (RPA) values. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that using SCG and PPW as a partial substitute for substrate (what straw) enhances the physicochemical, techno-functional, and antioxidant activity of P. ostreatus.

In recent years, the fast growth of computational power has allowed the application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in a wide range of areas of interest, such as gas–solid unit operations. In this context, the multiphase particle-in-cell (MP-PIC) method appears as an option to represent fluid–particle and particle–particle interactions, avoiding the complexity of tracking each particle and the high computational cost derived from this. The MP-PIC method can represent the particles as a group with the same characteristics, allowing the simulation of gas–solid systems at different scales. To achieve this, the particle–particle interactions are simplified using the solid stress tensor to represent them; this does not require explicit expressions. This approach has a low computational cost, allowing the simulation of industrial cases using just workstations. This paper provides a review of the literature on the solid stress tensor and its commercial and non-commercial applications, including its historical and mathematical development in the description of particle–particle interactions. In addition, to consolidate the knowledge and advancing understanding in this crucial aspect of multiphase flow simulations, this review identifies the current challenges and opportunities for future research in multiphase systems based on the solid stress tensor. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) varieties are particularly susceptible to the pathogens downy mildew Plasmopara viticola and powdery mildew Erysiphe necator. Conventional methods for identifying and classifying spores rely on time-consuming microscopic examinations susceptible to human error and requiring qualified personnel. The aim of the present work has focused on the establishment of a protocol for the rapid molecular detection of the fungal species P. viticola and E. necator from adhesive tapes used to trap spores in airborne inoculum collector cyclones. Four DNA extraction methods were tested. Subsequently, molecular detection of both pathogens was performed by validating some of the specific molecular markers available in the literature. PCR with the primers Nad9 cob-F/Nad9 cob-R and Uncin144/Uncin511 showed specific results for P. viticola and E. necator, respectively, and the best results were obtained with the T-CTAB method. The methodology developed in this work could be of great help for relating direct measurement of P. viticola and E. necator airborne inoculum to disease risk and detection of pathogens, which could be integrated into the early diagnosis of these grapevine pathogens, improving existing warning systems such as Decision Support Systems.

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that disrupts breathing during sleep. This study aims to classify sleep apnea using a machine learning approach and a Euler–Poincaré characteristic (EPC) model derived from electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. An ensemble K-nearest neighbors classifier and a feedforward neural network were implemented using the EPC model as inputs. ECG signals were preprocessed with a polynomial-based scheme to reduce noise, and the processed signals were transformed into a non-Gaussian physiological random field (NGPRF) for EPC model extraction from excursion sets. The classifiers were then applied to the EPC model inputs. Using the Apnea-ECG dataset, the proposed method achieved an accuracy of 98.5%, sensitivity of 94.5%, and specificity of 100%. Combining machine learning methods and geometrical features can effectively diagnose sleep apnea from single-lead ECG signals. The EPC model enhances clinical decision-making for evaluating this disease.

Salmonella spp. are known pathogens in fish, with their presence potentially resulting from the contamination of the aquatic environment or improper handling. Accurate bacterial identification is crucial across various fields, including medicine, microbiology, and the food industry, and thus a range of techniques are available for this purpose. In this study, Salmonella spp. and other hydrogen sulphide-positive bacteria were investigated in the digestive contents of fish destined for consumption from the Atlantic area of Macaronesia. Two identification techniques were compared: the traditional API method and the MALDI-TOF MS technique. For the identification of Salmonella spp. carriers, 59 samples were processed following ISO 6579–1:2017. A total of 47 strains of Gram-negative bacilli were obtained. No Salmonella spp. isolates were detected. The most frequent genus was Enterobacter (76.50%), followed by Shewanella (10.63%). The MALDI-TOF MS technique showed a high concordance with the API technique, with 72.34% concordance at the species level. Both techniques demonstrated a high degree of concordance in the identification of Enterobacter cloacae, with 87.23% genus-level concordance and 12.76% non-concordant identifications. This study highlights the limitations of the API technique and the speed and precision of MALDI-TOF MS. The identified bacteria could pose a health risk to humans.

In 2018, the WHO published a methodology for conducting a point prevalence survey (PPS) of antibiotic use in hospitals. The aim of this study is to report the use of antibiotics in six second-level hospitals in Mexico using this methodology. Methods: A multicenter cross-sectional study based on the 2021–2023 adaptation for Latin American hospitals was conducted in internal medicine, surgery, intensive care unit (ICU), obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics departments of the IMSS in the western region of the state of Mexico. Results: The overall prevalence of antibiotic use was 61%; the services with the highest prevalence of prescription were general surgery (79%) and the ICU (78%). A total of 846 patients were surveyed; there were no differences in antibiotic use or non-use in terms of gender, surgical procedure and invasive devices, but there were differences in median age and comorbidities. Adherence to guidelines was 53.9%. The three main antibiotics used were third-generation cephalosporins (28%), carbapenems (13%) and glycopeptides (9%); for the type of indication, for CAI and prophylaxis, the rates of use of third-generation cephalosporins were 29.2% and 44.5%, respectively, while for healthcare-associated infections, carbapenems were used (23.9%). By AWaRe group, the watch group was predominant for all types (63.9%), for prophylaxis it was the access group (39.3%), and for HAIs it was the reserve group (4.9%).

Remote laboratories are essential in addressing access and quality challenges in technical education. They enable students from various locations to engage with real equipment, overcome geographic and economic constraints, and provide solutions during crises, such as pandemics, when in-person learning is limited. As a key element of Education 4.0, remote labs promote technical skill development, enhance engineering education, and support diverse learning approaches. This study presents a remote laboratory based on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), developed using a waterfall methodology integrating IoT and Cloud Computing technologies to facilitate close interaction between hardware and software. The lab focuses on controlling DC, servo, and stepper motors, allowing students to apply theoretical concepts such as digital signals, pulse-width modulation (PWM), and data representation in bits in a practical setting. The testing phase involved 50 robotics and mechatronics engineering students who participated in hands-on sessions for one month, followed by a structured survey evaluating their experience, interaction, and the educational relevance of the platform. The survey shows high student satisfaction, highlighting the platform’s strengths and identifying areas for improvement. The results also underscore the system’s potential to significantly enhance the educational experience in remote environments, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Background: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a key component of the stomatognathic system, playing a major role in maintaining mandibular stability and function. Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a prevalent disease in the world, with surgical treatment being reserved for complex cases or end-stage TMJ disease. A narrative review was conducted to describe the quantitative and qualitative factors that affect TMJ prosthesis stability. Methods: Studies with a sample size equal to or greater than 10 subjects who underwent surgical procedures for joint replacement using stock or customized ATM prostheses were included. This narrative review examined some variables that may influence in terms of the longevity of the TMJ prosthesis, highlighting issues to be considered in future research. Results: The current development of TMJ prostheses is benefiting from technological advances, offering a suitable adaptation to the patient’s anatomy and superior results in functionality and patient satisfaction. However, the biomechanical complexity of the TMJ shows unique challenges compared to other joints in the body, where anatomical, biomechanical, and functional requirements are high. The stability of the TMJ prosthesis is affected by multiple variables, including the selection of biocompatible materials that resist corrosion and wear, the design of the prosthesis, the diagnosis and indication for its use, and the surgeon’s experience. The success of TMJ replacement can be measured by improving the patient’s quality of life, reducing pain, restoring mandibular functionality, and recovering suitable facial morphology for the patient’s conditions. Conclusion: There is a need for training of maxillofacial surgeons in TMJ surgery and replacement, as well as a greater focus on the research and development of systems to simplify surgical design and procedures and to optimize the results of TMJ replacement.

The energy sector relies on numerical model output forecasts for operational purposes on a short-term scale, up to 10 days ahead. Reducing model errors is crucial, particularly given that coarse resolution models often fail to account for complex topography, such as that found in Costa Rica. Local circulations affect wind conditions at the level of wind turbines, thereby impacting wind energy production. This work addresses a specific need of the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity (ICE) as a public service provider for the energy sector. The developed methodology and implemented product in this study serves as a proof of concept that could be replicated by WMO members. It demonstrates a product for wind speed forecasting at wind power plants by employing a novel strategy for model input selection based on large-scale indicators leveraging artificial intelligence-based forecasting methods. The product is developed and implemented based on the full-value chain framework for weather, water, and climate services for the energy sector introduced by the WMO. The results indicate a reduction in the wind forecast RMSE by approximately 55% compared to the GFS grid values. The conclusion is that combining coarse model outputs with regional climatological knowledge through AI-based downscaling models is an effective approach for obtaining reliable local short-term wind forecasts up to 10 days ahead.

Forest fuels are the core element of fire management; each fuel component plays an important role in fire behavior. Therefore, accurate determination of their characteristics and spatial distribution is crucial. This paper introduces a novel method for mapping the spatial distribution of litter and duff fuel loads using data collected by unmanned aerial vehicles. The approach leverages a very high-resolution multispectral data analysis within a machine learning framework to achieve precise and detailed results. A set of vegetation indices and texture metrics derived from the multispectral data, optimized by a “Variable Selection Using Random Forests” (VSURF) algorithm, were used to train random forest (RF) models, enabling the modeling of high-resolution maps of litter and duff fuel loads. A field campaign to measure fuel loads was conducted in the mixed forest of the natural protected area of “Sierra de Quila”, Jalisco, Mexico, to measure fuel loads and obtain field reference data for calibration and validation purposes. The results revealed moderate determination coefficients between observed and predicted fuel loads with R2 = 0.32, RMSE = 0.53 Mg/ha for litter and R2 = 0.38, RMSE = 13.14 Mg/ha for duff fuel loads, both with significant p-values of 0.018 and 0.015 for litter and duff fuel loads, respectively. Moreover, the relative root mean squared errors were 33.75% for litter and 27.71% for duff fuel loads, with a relative bias of less than 5% for litter and less than 20% for duff fuel loads. The spatial distribution of the litter and duff fuel loads was coherent with the structure of the vegetation, despite the high complexity of the study area. Our modeling approach allows us to estimate the continuous high-resolution spatial distribution of litter and duff fuel loads, aligned with their ecological context, which dictates their dynamics and spatial variability. The method achieved acceptable accuracy in monitoring litter and duff fuel loads, providing researchers and forest managers with timely data to expedite decision-making in fire and forest fuel management.

Grape stalks (GSs) from winemaking were submitted to a green process to valorise its lignocellulosic biomass that applied subcritical water extraction (SWE) at 170 °C and 180 °C to obtain active extracts and cellulose-enriched fractions. The sum of the total phenolic content of the soluble extract and the solid residue fractions from the SWE exceeded that of the GS, which suggests the generation of compounds with antioxidant properties through SWE. All SWE fractions showed high antioxidant power. The increased temperature promoted the extraction of polyphenolic compounds, enhancing the antioxidant power of both extracts and solid residues. These solid residue fractions were bleached with alkaline hydrogen peroxide solutions (4 and 8% v/v) to purify cellulose. After two bleaching cycles, no notable delignification progress was observed, as the bleaching yield or whiteness index did not significantly change in the further cycles. The first bleaching cycle led to a significant reduction in the lignin content at both SWE temperatures. The cellulose purity was higher in the samples obtained at 170 °C and bleached with 4% alkaline hydrogen peroxide. SWE at 180 °C led to greater cellulose oxidation during the bleaching step regardless of the hydrogen peroxide concentration.

Since the times of the Incas, farmers in the remote Andes of Peru have constructed terraces to grow crops in a landscape characterized by steep slopes, semiarid climate, and landslide geohazards. Recent investigations have concluded that terracing and irrigation techniques could enhance landslide risk due to the increase in water percolation and interception of surface flow in unstable slopes, leading to failure. In this study, we generated an inventory of 170 landslides and terraced areas to assess the spatial coherence, causative relations, and geomechanical processes linking landslide presence and Inca terraces in a 250 km2 area located in the Ticsani valley, southern Peru. To assess spatial coherence, a tool was developed based on the confusion matrix approach. Performance parameters were quantified for areas close to the main rivers and communities yielding precision and recall values between 64% and 81%. On a larger scale, poor performance was obtained pointing to the existence of additional processes linked to landslide presence. To investigate the role of other natural variables in landslide prediction, a logistic regression analysis was performed. The results showed that terrace presence is a statistically relevant factor that bolsters landslide presence predictions, apart from first-order natural variables like distance to rivers, curvature, and geology. To explore potential geomechanical processes linking terraces and slope failures, FEM numerical modeling was conducted. Results suggested that both decreased permeability and increased surface irrigation, at 70% of the average annual rainfall, are capable of inducing slope failure. Overall, irrigated terraces appear to further promote slope instability due to infiltration of irrigation water in an area characterized by fluvial erosion, high relief, and poor geologic materials, exposing local communities to increased landslide risk.

We perform a sentence-level sentiment analysis study of different literary texts in English language. Each text is converted into a series in which the data points are the sentiment value of each sentence obtained using the sentiment analysis tool (VADER). By applying the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) and the Higuchi Fractal Dimension (HFD) methods to these sentiment series, we find that they are monofractal with long-term correlations, which can be explained by the fact that the writing process has memory by construction, with a sentiment evolution that is self-similar. Furthermore, we discretize these series by applying a classification approach which transforms the series into a one on which each data point has only three possible values, corresponding to positive, neutral or negative sentiments. We map these three-states series to a Markov chain and investigate the transitions of sentiment from one sentence to the next, obtaining a state transition matrix for each book that provides information on the probability of transitioning between sentiments from one sentence to the next. This approach shows that there are biases towards increasing the probability of switching to neutral or positive sentences. The two approaches supplement each other, since the long-term correlation approach allows a global assessment of the sentiment of the book, while the state transition matrix approach provides local information about the sentiment evolution along the text.

Background/Objectives: The present work aimed to compare the effects of the standardized dry extract from the leaves of Monteverdia ilicifolia, popularly known as “espinheira-santa”, with omeprazole in the management of dyspepsia related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods: A double-blind, randomized, non-inferiority and double-dummy clinical trial was conducted. In total, 86 patients with GERD symptoms were randomized into three groups: Omeprazol (20 mg), M. ilicifolia (400 mg), or M. ilicifolia (860 mg). Capsules were provided by SUSTENTEC®, Pato Bragato, Brazil. It was requested that the participants take three capsules before breakfast and dinner for 4 weeks. Clinical outcomes were obtained at the beginning and end of the study, with GERD symptoms (QS-GERD), the impact of heartburn symptoms on quality of life (HBQOL), and medical records. Results: Overall, 75.6% of the participants showed adherence without any differences among the experimental groups. All groups had significant reductions in both QS-GERD and HBQOL scores. Omeprazole and 400 and 860 mg of M. ilicifolia decreased the QS-GERD total scores at the endpoint compared to the baseline (Chi-square = 129.808; p < 0.0001), as well as individual item scores, such as heartburn intensity (Chi-square = 93.568, p < 0.0001) and heartburn after meals (Chi-square = 126.426, p < 0.0001). There were no differences among the experimental groups after the intervention. Conclusions: Our results suggest that capsules with a standardized dry extract from the leaves of M. ilicifolia at a dosage of 400 or 860 mg are non-inferior to omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor.

This study explores the development of biocompatible scaffolds for bone regeneration, utilizing polylactic acid (PLA) combined with calcium phosphate as a pH buffer and diatomaceous earth as a biocompatibilizer. These materials were extruded and 3D-printed to enhance cell adhesion and biodegradability after enough cell growth. The biocompatibility of the resulting composites, with different proportions of the components and sterilization methods, was tested according to the ISO 10993 protocol. The optimal performance, with nearly zero cytotoxicity, was observed with 20 PLA/1 CP/1 DE mass ratios and gamma sterilization. Tension analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to the 3D-printed composites, which were also analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to understand the origin of the tension properties better, which were comparable to those of cancellous bone. Degradation tests under physiological conditions for 13 weeks showed no significant mass loss. Furthermore, it was observed that cell adhesion, viability, proliferation, and osteoconduction are possible in the scaffolds studied, opening opportunities for future studies to substantiate the use of 3D-printed silica-filled composites as an alternative to homologous implants for various bone regeneration applications.

Background/Objectives: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a common and severe complication of diabetic patients, with significant global prevalence and associated health burdens, including high recurrence rates, lower-limb amputations, and substantial associated economic costs. This study aimed to understand the user needs of healthcare professionals treating diabetic foot ulcers for newly developed material technologies. Methods: An open-ended questionnaire was used to identify user needs, identify the limitations of current treatments, and determine the specific requirements for ideal treatment. This information was used to develop a list of key considerations for creating innovative material technologies to improve diabetic wound treatment results. Results: Most respondents indicated that they followed published treatment guidelines for DFUs but noted that treatment often required a case-specific approach. Antibiotics and surgical debridement were commonly used for infection control. The participants showed a strong preference for wound dressings with lasting antibacterial properties. Respondents identified ideal properties for new products, including ease of use, enhanced antibacterial properties, affordability, and targeted biological activity. The respondents also highlighted the importance of a holistic approach to DFU management, integrating product development with comprehensive care strategies and patient education. Conclusions: This study highlights the complexity of DFU care, emphasizing that no single product can address all treatment needs. Future materials could focus on combination therapies and specific use cases. Additionally, understanding global variations in treatment practices and educating users on the proper application of newly developed material technologies is crucial for improving the management of DFUs and patient outcomes.

Anaerobic digestion is a well-established technology for the sustainable production of biogas. However, to be used as a substitute for natural gas or as vehicle fuel, it is necessary to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and other contaminants from biogas that can compromise the useful life of combustion engines. Upgraded biogas is known as biomethane (>95% methane content). This work reviews the different technologies used for upgrading biogas, emphasizing microalgae–nanoparticle systems, representing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly system. Parameters affecting these systems performance are discussed, and the trends and areas of opportunity for subsequent work are evaluated through a bibliometric analysis.

Background/Objectives: Prostate cancer (PC) represents the second most diagnosed form of cancer in men on a global scale. Despite the theranostic efficacy of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) radioligands, there is a spectrum of PC disease in which PSMA expression is low or absent. The gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR), also known as the bombesin type 2 receptor, has been identified as a target in both the early and advanced stages of PC. The objective of this study was to prepare and preclinically evaluate [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-Bombesin ([99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN), estimate dosimetry in healthy subjects, and assess the diagnostic efficacy of the radiotracer in patients with metastatic PC, with the hypothesis of non-inferiority to one of the gold standards, [18F]-PSMA-1007. Moreover, the potential of [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN as a theranostic pair with [177Lu]Lu-iPSMA-BN was investigated. Methods: [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN was prepared under GMP conditions with radiochemical purities > 95%, showing specific recognition by PSMA and GRP receptors in prostate cancer cells and mice bearing PC tumors. Six healthy volunteers were enrolled, and [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN SPECT/CT imaging (740 MBq) was performed to estimate the dosimetry. The pilot clinical study included seven mCRPC and four mCSPC patients with prior androgen deprivation therapy. All patients had a recent [18F]-PSMA-PET/CT scan and were enrolled in this prospective study on their own signed behalf. Volumetric lesion target-to-background ratios (TBRs) were obtained from PET/CT and SPECT/CT images. Results: [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN effective radiation dose was 1.94 ± 0.39 mSv/740 MBq. A total of 178 lesions were detected via CT, 162 via [18F]-PSMA-1007 PET, and 155 via [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN SPECT. Three patients with mCRPC had higher TBR values on SPECT than on PET. [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN appears to have better lesion detection in patients with aggressive histologic transformation. Two-way ANOVA analysis revealed a significant difference in TBR values between patients with mCRPC and mCSPC (p < 0.05) but no difference between [18F]-PSMA-1007 and [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN (p > 0.05). In one patient, [177Lu]Lu-iPSMA-BN showed a high correlation with [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN for lesions that concentrated radioactivity. Conclusions: [99mTc]Tc-iPSMA-BN SPECT/CT is a promising alternative not only for diagnostic purposes but also for broadening the spectrum of PC patients who may benefit from radionuclide theranostics. The results justify the development of a clinical trial involving a significant number of patients with PC.

Background: The diagnosis of acute spondylodiscitis can be very difficult because clinical onset symptoms are highly variable. The reference examination is MRI, but very often the first diagnostic investigation performed is CT, given its high availability in the acute setting. CT allows rapid evaluation of other alternative diagnoses (e.g., fractures), but scarce literature is available to evaluate the accuracy of CT, and in particular of multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT), in the diagnosis of suspected spondylodiscitis. The aim of our study was to establish MDCT accuracy and how this diagnostic method could help doctors in the depiction of acute spondylodiscitis in an emergency situation by comparing the diagnostic performance of MDCT with MRI, which is the gold standard. Methods: We searched our radiological archive for all MRI examinations of patients who had been studied for a suspicion of acute spondylodiscitis in the period between January 2017 and January 2021 (n = 162). We included only patients who had undergone MDCT examination prior to MRI examination (n = 25). The overall diagnostic value of MDCT was estimated, using MRI as the gold standard. In particular, the aim of our study was to clarify the effectiveness of CT in radiological cases that require immediate intervention (stage of complications). Therefore, the radiologist, faced with a negative CT finding, can suggest an elective (not urgent) MRI with relative serenity and without therapeutic delays. Results: MDCT allowed identification of the presence of acute spondylodiscitis in 13 of 25 patients. Specificity and positive predictive value were 100% for MDCT, while sensitivity and negative predictive value were 68% and 50%, respectively, achieving an overall accuracy of 76%. In addition, MDCT allowed the identification of paravertebral abscesses (92%), fairly pathognomonic lesions of spondylodiscitis pathology. Conclusions: The MDCT allows identification of the presence of acute spondylodiscitis in the Emergency Department (ED) with a satisfactory accuracy. In the case of a positive CT examination, this allows therapy to be started immediately and reduces complications. However, we suggest performing an elective MRI examination in negative cases in which pathological findings are hard to diagnose with CT alone.

(1) Background: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) represent a rare acquired intracranial vascular malformation, with a variety of clinical signs and symptoms, which make their diagnosis difficult. Intracranial hemorrhage is one of the most serious clinical manifestations. In this paper the authors’ goal was to verify the accuracy and utility of contrast-enhanced brain CT angiography (CTA) for the identification and the characterization of dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) in patients who presented with brain hemorrhage compared to 3D digital subtraction angiography (3D DSA); (2) a retrospective study of 26 patients with DAVFs who presented with intracranial hemorrhage to our institution was performed. The information reviewed included clinical presentation, location and size of hemorrhage, brain CTA and 3D DSA findings; (3) results: 61% (16/26) of DAVFs were identified by CTA. The vast majority of patients were male (69%, 18/26) and the most common presenting symptom was sudden onset headache. All DAVFs had cortical venous drainage and about one-third were associated with a venous varix. The most common location was tentorial (73%, 19/26); (4) conclusions: CTA can represent a valid alternative diagnostic method to 3D DSA for the study of DAVF in the initial and preliminary diagnostic approach, especially in emergency situations. In fact, it represents a fast, inexpensive, non-invasive and above all, easily accessible and available diagnostic technique, unlike DSA or MRI, allowing to provide information necessary for the identification, classification and treatment planning of DAVFs.

This meta-analysis determined the effect of Bacillus spp. on growth performance of growing–finishing pigs and then assessed causes for the heterogeneity of responses detected using meta-regression. A database of 22 articles published from 2000 to 2020 was identified, and 9 articles fitted the selection criteria and were integrated in the final database. Statistical analysis was performed to analyze the effect size for ADG, average daily feed intake (ADFI), and F:G ratio using a standardized means difference (SMD) at a 95% confidence interval. A meta-regression analysis was used to investigate the cause of heterogeneity, using the individual SMD for each study assessment as the outcome and the associated SE as the measure of variance. Dietary Bacillus spp. supplementation had no effect on ADFI (SMD: −0.052, p = 0.138) and numerically increased ADG (SMD: 0.113, p = 0.081) and reduced the F:G ratio SMD: −0.127, p < 0.001). Meta-regression outcomes suggested that the number of animals per group was an essential component promoting heterogeneity in ADG. Overall, the inclusion of Bacillus spp. (median 486 mg/d) in growing–finishing pigs can increase ADG and can decrease the F:G ratio.

Infections caused by micro-organisms of the genus Candida are becoming a growing health problem worldwide. These fungi are opportunistic commensals that can produce infections—clinically known as candidiasis—in immunocompromised individuals. The indiscriminate use of different anti-fungal treatments has triggered the resistance of Candida species to currently used therapies. In this sense, propolis has been shown to have potent antimicrobial properties and thus can be used as an approach for the inhibition of Candida species. Therefore, this work aims to evaluate the anti-Candida effects of a propolis extract obtained from the north of Mexico on clinical isolates of Candida species. Candida species were specifically identified from oral lesions, and both the qualitative and quantitative anti-Candida effects of the Mexican propolis were evaluated, as well as its inhibitory effect on C. albicans isolate’s germ tube growth and chemical composition. Three Candida species were identified, and our results indicated that the inhibition halos of the propolis ranged from 7.6 to 21.43 mm, while that of the MFC and FC50 ranged from 0.312 to 1.25 and 0.014 to 0.244 mg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the propolis was found to inhibit germ tube formation (IC50 ranging from 0.030 to 1.291 mg/mL). Chemical composition analysis indicated the presence of flavonoids, including pinocembrin, baicalein, pinobanksin chalcone, rhamnetin, and biochanin A, in the Mexican propolis extract. In summary, our work shows that Mexican propolis presents significant anti-Candida effects related to its chemical composition, and also inhibits germ tube growth. Other Candida species virulence factors should be investigated in future research in order to determine the mechanisms associated with antifungal effects against them.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the reproductive physiology, oocyte competence, and chromatin compaction in Nelore calves in the early-prepubertal period (EPP) and the intermediate-prepubertal period (IPP). Calves aged 2–5 (EPP) and 8–11 months old (IPP) were assigned to Trial 1 (morpho-physiological–endocrine evaluations, n = 8) or Trial 2 (oocyte donors, n = 8) vs. the respective control groups of cows (n = 8, each). All morphological endpoints, except the antral follicle count, increased from the EPP to the IPP. The EPP LH-FSH plasma concentrations were similar to cows, whereas LH was lower and FSH was higher in the IPP than in cows. . Cows produced more Grade I (12.9% vs. 4.1% and 1.7%) and fewer Grade III COC (30.1% vs. 44.5% and 49.0%) than the EPP and IPP calves, respectively. The IPP calves’ oocyte diameter was similar to those from cows but greater than those from EPP females (124.8 ± 8.5 and 126.0 ± 7.5 μm vs. 121.3 ± 7.5 μm, respectively). The expression of the chromatin compaction-related gene HDAC3 was downregulated in calves. The proportion of the blastocyst rate to the controls was lower in EPP than in IPP calves (43.7% vs. 78.7%, respectively). Progressive oocyte competence was found during the prepubertal period, which can help to decide whether to recover oocytes from calves.

Ungurahui, or Patawa, fruits are a popular fruit and medicinal food used in the Amazon. Here, we have studied nine natural populations of ungurahui from the Peruvian Amazon regarding their nutritional and biological activities, including metal composition, proximal analyses, cytotoxic, antioxidant and cholinesterase inhibition activities. Twenty-four compounds have been detected in these Peruvian natural populations by UHPLC-MS, including nine phenolic acids (peaks 1–6, 8, 9 and 11), four C-glycosyl flavonoids (peaks 12, 16, 17 and 18), two flavonols (peaks 7 and 10), one flavanol (peak 15), three anthocyanins (peaks 13, 14 and 22) and five resveratrol derivatives (peaks 19–21, 23 and 24). Sample 9, Tunaants, showed the highest DPPH clearing capacity regarding the content of Trolox equivalents (2208.79 μmol Trolox/g), but an ORAC test of the sample collected in San Lorenzo showed the highest clearing activity (1222.28 μmol Trolox/g) and the sample collected in Allpahuayo Mishana showed the most powerful ABTS (1803.72 μmol Trolox/g). The sample from Jenaro Herrera was the most powerful in AChe inhibition (IC50 2.05 ± 0.03 μg/mL), followed by the sample from Contamana (IC50 2.43 ± 0.12 μg/mL). In BChE inhibition, the sample from Palestina was the most active (4.42 ± 0.06 μg/mL), followed by samples from Tunaants and San Lorenzo. The differences among bioactivities can be related to the different growing conditions of the populations of ungurahui. The palm tree fruit proved to be a good source of natural antioxidants and dietary fatty acids, and their consumption represents an alternative for the prevention of neurodegenerative or related non-chronic transmittable diseases.

This article analyzes the implementation of a circular economy model for the management of reusable solid waste in the Colombian municipalities of Arbeláez (province of Cundinamarca) and Tibasosa (province of Boyacá). The analysis is conducted using M-GRCT, a circular economy decision support model for the design of recyclable waste management systems in low-income municipalities. The model allows for performing calculations on a set of two scenarios integrating a sociocultural dynamics assessment—this being a characteristic feature of this type of municipalities. Results show that both the linear and circular models of waste management are economically viable. However, the particular conditions of each municipality, the tariff system, the number of subscribers and the variations in costs and inflation in each municipality affect the results of economic viability. In addition, the waste production scale and the volumes of recoverable waste also affect the results. All these factors are reflected in the scenarios analyzed. In terms of economic viability, the circular model presents better results in Arbeláez, while in the municipality of Tibasosa, the best results are obtained with a linear economy approach.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory disease with unknown etiology. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced colitis is a widely used mouse model in IBD research. DSS colitis involves activation of the submucosal immune system and can be used to study IBD-like disease characteristics in acute, chronic, remission and transition phases. Insight into colon inflammatory parameters is needed to understand potentially irreversible adaptations to the chronification of colitis, determining the baseline and impact of further inflammatory episodes. We performed analyses of non-invasive and invasive colitis parameters in acute, chronic and remission phases of the DSS colitis in C57BL/6 mice. Non-invasive colitis parameters poorly reflected inflammatory aspects of colitis in chronic remission phase. We found invasive inflammatory parameters, positively linked to repeated DSS-episodes, such as specific colon weight, inflamed colon area, spleen weight, absolute cell numbers of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells as well as B cells, blood IFN-γ level, colonic chemokines BLC and MDC as well as the prevalence of Turicibacter species in feces. Moreover, microbial Lactobacillus species decreased with chronification of disease. Our data point out indicative parameters of recurrent gut inflammation in context of DSS colitis.

Products derived from trees have been used by mankind for thousands of years, where timber has a long tradition as an ecological construction material. There is currently an increasing trend in multi-storey timber buildings, because of the projected growth in the demand for housing in urban areas between now and 2050, along with the urgent need for a more sustainable and productive construction industry. The construction of these buildings is now possible thanks to the new advances in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) and the new technological developments around timber construction. Its industrialization requirements imply a paradigm shift for the construction industry, which requires, among other aspects, the early and collaborative integration of stakeholders in its design and construction process. According to this, the objective of this review article is to determine the main advances and limitations related to the design and construction of multi-storey timber buildings, categorizing them in aspects such as sustainability, engineering and construction sciences, and collaborative design. The methodology of this article was based on the review of 266 articles published in Web of Science (WoS), as indexed scientific journals, between 2017 and mid-2022, performing a comparative and cooccurrence analysis of the contents. The results evidenced that 73% of the articles showed advances and limitations corresponding to the engineering and construction sciences category, 23% to sustainability, and the remaining 4% to collaborative design. The main advances in the development of multi-storey timber buildings are related to seismic analysis, connections design, fire performance, and fire design. While the main limitations are related to social sustainability, the results are not conclusive due to the low number of publications that support them.

Forests are of incalculable value due to the ecosystem services they provide to humanity such as carbon storage, climate regulation and participation in the hydrological cycle. The threat to forests grows as the population increases and the activities that are carried out in it, such as: cattle rearing, illegal trafficking, deforestation and harvesting. Moreover, the environmental authorities do not have sufficient capacity to exercise strict control over wood production due to the vast variety of timber species within the countries, the lack of tools to verify timber species in the supply chain and the limited available and labelled digital data of the forest species. This paper presents a set of digital macroscopic images of eleven tropical forest species, which can be used as support at checkpoints, to carry out studies and research based on macroscopic analysis of cross-sectional images of tree species such as: dendrology, forestry, as well as algorithms of artificial intelligence. Images were acquired in wood warehouses with a digital magnifying glass following a protocol used by the Colombian Ministry of Environment, as well as the USA Forest Services and the International Association of Wood Anatomists. The dataset contains more than 8000 images with resolution of 640 × 480 pixels which includes 3.9 microns per pixel, and an area of (2.5 × 1.9) square millimeters where the anatomical features are exposed. The dataset presents great usability for academics and researchers in the forestry sector, wood anatomists and personnel who work with computational models, without neglecting forest surveillance institutions such as regional autonomous corporations and the Ministry of the Environment.

Mexico is one of the richest countries in amphibian species (420 spp.), with a high level of endemism (69%). The order Anura represents the most diverse and widespread of the three extant amphibian orders (257 spp.). The anurofauna of Mexico’s tropical dry forest ecosystem host a high proportion of the species and endemism registered in the country. In terms of conservation, both dry forests and amphibians are at risk due to climate change because it is expected that as the temperature becomes higher and precipitation decreases, this vegetation type may experience water stress. We applied the MaxEnt algorithm to estimate the potential current and future (year 2070) geographic distribution patterns of 95 endemic Mexican anuran species inhabiting the country’s tropical dry forests by considering two representative concentration pathway scenarios (RCP4.5/RCP8.5) and analyzed the potential distributional pattern changes. The results indicated that overall, species would experience enough of a significant warming effect to cause a reduction in the original distribution area, with 44% of species losing an average of 50% of their original range (9 spp. in threatened category); additionally, 22% of the species in the dry forest ecosystem will experience an average increase of almost 50% in their original area, two species will lose more than 80% of their range, and one will disappear.

This paper presents a type-2 fuzzy inference tree designed for a differential wheeled mobile robot that navigates in indoor environments. The proposal consists of a controller designed for obstacle avoidance, a controller for path recovery and goal reaching, and a third controller for the real-time selection of behaviors. The system takes as inputs the information provided for a 2D laser range scanner, i.e., the distance of nearby objects to the robot, as well as the robot position in space, calculated from mechanical odometry. The real performance is evaluated through metrics such as clearance, path smoothness, path length, travel time and success rate. The experimental results allow us to demonstrate an appropriate performance of our proposal for the navigation task, with a higher efficiency than the reference methods taken from the state of the art.

Diagnosis of Toxoplasma gondii acute infection was first attempted by detection of specific IgM antibodies, as for other infectious diseases. However, it was noted that this immunoglobulin declines slowly and may last for months or even years. Apart from the diagnostic problem imposed on clinical management, this phenomenon called our attention due to the underlying phenomena that may be causing it. We performed a systematic comparison of reports studying IgM antibody kinetics, and the data from the papers were used to construct comparative plots and other graph types. It became clear that this phenomenon is quite generalized, and it may also occur in animals. Moreover, this is not a technical issue, although some tests make more evident the prolonged IgM decay than others. We further investigated biological reasons for its occurrence, i.e., infection dynamics (micro-reactivation–encystment, reinfection and reactivation), parasite strain relevance, as well as host innate, natural B cell responses and Ig class-switch problems inflicted by the parasite. The outcomes of these inquiries are presented and discussed herein.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected vector-borne disease; there are different manifestations of the diseases and species involved, and cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (L.) mexicana is the most prevalent in Mexico. Currently, the drugs available for the treatment of leishmaniasis are toxic, expensive, and often ineffective; therefore, it is imperative to carry out research and development of new therapeutic alternatives, with natural products being an attractive option. In particular, oregano is a plant with worldwide distribution; in Mexico, two species: Lippia berlandieri Schauer and Poliomintha longiflora Gray are endemic. Both essential oils (EO’s) have been reported to have antimicrobial activity attributed to their main components, thymol and carvacrol. In this research, the leishmanicidal effect and mechanism of cell death induced by L. berlandieri EO, P. longiflora EO, thymol, and carvacrol in L. mexicana promastigotes were determined in vitro. Additionally, the cytotoxic activity in mammalian cells was evaluated. L. berlandieri EO presented higher leishmanicidal activity (IC50 = 41.78 µg/mL) than P. longiflora EO (IC50 = 77.90 µg/mL). Thymol and carvacrol were the major components of both Mexican oregano EO’s. Thymol presented higher leishmanial inhibitory activity (IC50 = 22.39 µg/mL), above that of carvacrol (IC50 = 61.52 µg/mL). All the EO’s and compounds evaluated presented lower cytotoxic activity than the reference drug; thymol was the compound with the best selectivity index (SI). In all cases, apoptosis was identified as the main mechanism of death induced in the parasites. The leishmanicidal capacity of the Mexican oregano EO is an accessible and affordable alternative that can be further explored.

Plant Glycoside Hydrolase Family 32 (PGHF32) contains the fructosyltransferases and fructan exohydrolase enzymes responsible for fructan metabolism, in addition to closely related vacuolar and cell wall acid invertases. Agave species produce complex and dynamic fructan molecules (agavins) requiring 4 different fructosyltransferase activities (1-SST, 1-FFT, 6G-FFT and 6-SFT) for their synthesis. Combined analysis of RNAseq and genome data for A. tequilana led to the characterization of the genes encoding 3 fructosyltransferases for this species and support the hypothesis that no separate 6-SFT type enzyme exists in A. tequilana, suggesting that at least one of the fructosyltransferases identified may have multiple enzymatic activities. Structures for PGHF32 genes varied for A. tequilana and between other plant species but were conserved for different enzyme types within a species. The observed patterns are consistent with the formation of distinct gene structures by intron loss. Promoter analysis of the PGHF32 genes identified abundant putative regulatory motifs for light regulation and tissue-specific expression, and these regulatory mechanisms were confirmed experimentally for leaf tissue. Motifs for phytohormone response, carbohydrate metabolism and dehydration responses were also uncovered. Based on the regulatory motifs, full-length cDNAs for MYB, GATA, DOF and GBF transcription factors were identified and their phylogenetic distribution determined by comparison with other plant species. In silico expression analysis for the selected transcription factors revealed both tissue-specific and developmental patterns of expression, allowing candidates to be identified for detailed analysis of the regulation of fructan metabolism in A. tequilana at the molecular level.

The complexing properties of two water-soluble resorcin[4]arenes (tetrasodium 5,11,17,23-tetrakissulfonatemethylen 2,8,14,20-tetra(butyl)resorcin[4]arene, Na4BRA, and tetrasodium 5,11,17,23-tetrakissulfonatemethylen-2,8,14,20-tetra(2-(methylthio)ethyl)resorcin[4]arene, Na4SRA) with polluting heavy metals such as Cu2+, Pb2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ were studied by conductivity, and the findings were confirmed by using other techniques to try to apply this knowledge to removing them. The results indicate that Na4BRA is able to complex Cu2+ in a 1:1 ratio and Pb2+ in a 1:2 ratio, while Na4SRA complexes Hg2+ in a 1:1 ratio. On the contrary, no indications have been observed that either of the resorcin[4]arenes studied complexes the Cd2+ ions. The results suggest that the bonds established between the sulfur atoms located at the lower edge of the SRA4− and the solvent hydrogens could prevent the entry of the guest into the host cavity. However, in the case of Hg2+ ions, the entry is favoured by the interactions between the sulfur donor atoms present on the lower edge of Na4SRA and the Hg2+ ions. Therefore, it can be said that Na4BRA is selective for Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions and Na4SRA is selective for Hg2+ ions.

To uncover novel genes associated with the Sugarcane mosaic virus (SCMV) response, we used RNA-Seq data to analyze differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and transcript expression pattern clusters between a tolerant/resistant (CI-RL1) and a susceptible (B73) line, in addition to the F1 progeny (CI-RL1xB73). A Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment of DEGs led us to propose three genes possibly associated with the CI-RL1 response: a heat shock 90-2 protein and two ABC transporters. Through a clustering analysis of the transcript expression patterns (CTEPs), we identified two genes putatively involved in viral systemic spread: the maize homologs to the PIEZO channel (ZmPiezo) and to the Potyvirus VPg Interacting Protein 1 (ZmPVIP1). We also observed the complex behavior of the maize eukaryotic factors ZmeIF4E and Zm-elfa (involved in translation), homologs to eIF4E and eEF1α in A. thaliana. Together, the DEG and CTEPs results lead us to suggest that the tolerant/resistant CI-RL1 response to the SCMV encompasses the action of diverse genes and, for the first time, that maize translation factors are associated with viral interaction.

This paper presents a numerical study of waste heat recovery from a fluid stream using thermoelectric devices. The system consisted of a square section duct with spherical porous media placed in its central region. Hot air circulates continuously through the duct and exchanges energy with the solid matrix and subsequently with the thermoelectric modules. The mathematical model of the system was solved using ANSYS/FLUENT software, requiring the implementation of user-defined functions (UDFs) and user-defined scalars (UDS) regarding porous media and thermoelectric generation modelling. From the simulations carried out, global efficiency and electrical power values were obtained in the range of [0.11–4.51] [%] and [0.01–12.77] [W], respectively. Furthermore, for the set of variables analysed, it was observed that the performance of the system is favoured by an increase in the fluid inlet temperature and speed, as well as by a higher external heat transfer coefficient.

Biochemical and biological differences in the venom of Crotalus durissus cumanensis from three ecoregions of Colombia were evaluated. Rattlesnakes were collected from the geographic areas of Magdalena Medio (MM), Caribe (CA) and Orinoquía (OR). All three regionally distributed venoms contain proteases, PLA2s and the basic subunit of crotoxin. However, only crotamine was detected in the CA venom. The highest lethality, coagulant, phospholipase A2 and hyaluronidase activities were found in the MM venom. Also, some differences, observed by western blot and immunoaffinity, were found in all three venoms when using commercial antivenoms. Furthermore, all three eco-regional venoms showed intraspecific variability, considering the differences in the abundance and intensity of their components, in addition to the activity and response to commercial antivenoms.

This technical report used a wireless device (CURO MkII) that recorded high-quality rumen sound waves from cows of different production statuses (dry cow vs. lactating cow) and physiological stages (pregnant vs. non-pregnant). Recordings from a dry Jersey heifer fed a diet based on haylage and straw showed a few high-amplitude spikes (3 at 6 dB) but mostly infrequent signals (9 at 12 dB and 22 at 18 dB), with pauses of approx. 2 min with no rumen sounds in between. Analysis of a few individual spikes in the 12 dB range showed that wave frequencies ranged from 230 to 250 Hz and lasted 4 s. Recordings of the high-yielding Red Danish cow fed a total mixed ration (TMR) showed an almost constant frequency of the rumen sounds with considerable amplitude of the waves. Rumen sounds from the Red Danish dry and pregnant cow fed on TMR were less frequent, with a lower amplitude than those from the high-yielding cow. These preliminary results demonstrate that wireless sound recording units are capable of measuring rumen sounds in a production setting and can discern between animals of different production and physiological stages, but more studies are needed to confirm our findings.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of autochthonous Nepalese fruits on nutrient degradation, fermentation kinetics, total gas production, and methane production in in-vitro rumen fermentation. The fruits of Terminalia chebula (HA), Terminalia bellirica (BA), and Triphala churna (TC), a commercial mixture with equal parts (33.3% DM basis) of Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia bellirica, and Terminalia chebula, were used. These were tested at three inclusion levels of 20% 40% and 100% of the total sample (as dry matter) in maize silage (MS). MS was used as a control (0% additive). These 10 treatments were tested for two 48-h incubations with quadruplicate samples using rumen fluid from 2 heifers. Total gas production (TGP: mL at standard temperature and pressure (STP)/g DM), methane production (expressed as % and mL/g DM), and volatile fatty acids were determined. After incubations, the filtrate was used to measure pH and volatile fatty acids (VFA), while the residue was used to measure degraded dry matter (dDM) and calculate the partitioning factor (PF48) and theoretical short-chain fatty acid concentration (tVFA). Rumen fluid pH linearly (p < 0.01) decreased in all treatments with increasing dose during fermentation. The CH4% was less in all three treatments with 100% autochthonous plants than in control, but there were no significant linear or quadratic effects for increasing BA, HA, and TC doses. The PF48 increased for all treatments with a significant linear and quadratic effect (p < 0.05) of increasing dose. Compared to MS, the inclusion of autochthonous plants increased the total volatile fatty acids, with no significant dose effects. The tVFA linearly decreased (p > 0.05) with an increasing dose of BA and HA. All treatments showed quadratic effects on tVFA (p < 0.05) with increasing dose. Increasing TC dose linearly (p < 0.05) and quadratically (p < 0.05) increased total VFA, while increasing HA dose had only a quadratic (p < 0.05) effect on total VFA. All treatments reduced total gas production (TGP) and methane concentration (CH4%) when compared to MS. The tested autochthonous fruits can be used as additives with a basal feed diet to reduce enteric methane emissions. The most effective anti-methanogenic treatment was 40% HA, which resulted in 18% methane reduction.

In recent years, the worrying generation of GHG from ruminant production has generated widespread interest in exploring nutritional strategies focused on reducing these gases, presenting the use of bioactive compounds (tannins) as an alternative in the diet. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of the addition of different levels of Acacia mearnsii on ruminal degradation, nutrient digestibility, and mitigation of greenhouse gas production. A completely randomized design with four treatments and six repetitions was used. The treatments were: T1, T2, T3, and T4 diets with, respectively, 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% A. mearnsii. The rumen degradation kinetic and in vitro digestibility, and the production of gas, CH4, and CO2 were evaluated. In situ rumen degradation and in vitro digestibility of DM and OM showed differences between treatments, with T1 being higher (p < 0.05) in the degradation of the soluble fraction (A), potential degradation (A + B), and effective degradation for the different passage rates in percent hour (0.02, 0.05, and 0.08), compared to the other treatments. Rumen pH did not show differences (p > 0.05) between treatments. The lowest (p < 0.05) gas, CH4, and CO2 production was observed in treatments T1 and T2 with an approximate mean of 354.5 mL gas/0.500 g fermented DM, 36.5 mL CH4/0.500 g fermented DM, and 151.5 mL CO2/0.500 g fermented DM, respectively, compared to treatments T3 and T4. Under the conditions of this study, it was concluded that it is possible to replace traditional forages with up to 20% of A. mearnsii, without observing changes in the production of greenhouse gases with respect to the control treatment (0% of A. mearnsii); however, A. mearnsii is not usable because it significantly decreases rumen degradability of DM and OM, which would considerably affect the production in animals.

Radiotherapy treatments are carried out using computerized axial tomography. In radiation therapy planning, the radiation oncologist must do a manual segmentation of volumes of interest to delineate the organs that should be irradiated. This way of carrying out the process generates long execution times and introduces a subjective component. In this study, a contour-propagation algorithm is formulated to automate the segmentation, based on elastic registration or nonrigid demon registration. A heuristic algorithm to find the parameters that optimize the registration is also proposed. The parameters found along with the contour-propagation algorithm are able to estimate contours of scans with Dice similarity coefficients (DSC) greater than 0.92 and maintain stability with B-spline registration, which takes in the parameters found as input. The study allows for validating the results using the correlation coefficient (CC) to compare the similarity between the voxels’ gray-scale intensity of the estimated tomography and the original tomography, obtaining values greater than 0.96. These values were validated under medical criteria and applied to liver and breast CT scans, indicating good performance for radiation therapy planning.

The purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative baseline of indicator organisms and Salmonella by bio-mapping throughout the processing chain from harvest to final product stages within a commercial conventional design pork processing establishment. Swab samples were taken on the harvest floor at different processing steps, gambrel table, after polisher, before final rinse, after the final rinse, post snap chill, and after peroxyacetic acid (PAA) application, while 2-pound product samples were collected for trim and ground samples. The samples were subjected to analysis for indicator microorganism enumeration, Aerobic Count (AC), Enterobacteriaceae (EB), and generic Escherichia coli (EC), with the BioMérieux TEMPO®. Salmonella prevalence and enumeration was evaluated using the BAX® System Real-Time Salmonella and the SalQuant™ methodology. Microbial counts were converted to Log Colony-forming units (CFU) on a per mL, per g or per sample basis, presented as LogCFU/mL, LogCFU/g and LogCFU/sample, prior to statistical analysis. All indicator microorganisms were significantly reduced at the harvest floor (p-value < 0.001), from gambrel table to after PAA cabinet location. The reduction at harvest was 2.27, 2.46 and 2.24 LogCFU/mL for AC, EB and EC, respectively. Trim sample values fluctuated based on cut, with the highest average AC count found at neck trim (2.83 LogCFU/g). Further process samples showed the highest AC count in sausage with a mean of 5.28 LogCFU/g. EB counts in sausage (3.19 LogCFU/g) showed an evident increase, compared to the reduction observed at the end of harvest and throughout trim processing. EC counts showed a similar trend to EB counts with the highest value found in sausage links (1.60 LogCFU/g). Statistical microbial process control (SPC) parameters were also developed for each of the indicator microorganisms, using the overall mean count (X=), the Lower control limit (LCL) and Upper control limit (UCL) at each sampling location. For Salmonella prevalence, a total of 125/650 samples were found positive (19%). From those positive samples, 47 samples (38%) were suitable for enumeration using the BAX® System SalQuant™, the majority detected at the gambrel table location. From those enumerable samples, 60% were estimated to be between 0.97 and 1.97 LogCFU/sample, while the rest (40%) were higher within the 2.00–4.02 LogCFU/sample range. This study provides evidence for the application of indicator and pathogen quantification methodologies for food safety management in commercial pork processing operations.

In 40–50% of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases, K-Ras gene mutations occur, which induce the expression of the K-Ras4B oncogenic isoform. K-Ras4B is transported by phosphodiesterase-6δ (PDE6δ) to the plasma membrane, where the K-Ras4B–PDE6δ complex dissociates and K-Ras4B, coupled to the plasma membrane, activates signaling pathways that favor cancer aggressiveness. Thus, the inhibition of the K-Ras4B–PDE6δ dissociation using specific small molecules could be a new strategy for the treatment of patients with CRC. This research aimed to perform a preclinical proof-of-concept and a therapeutic potential evaluation of the synthetic I-C19 and 131I-C19 compounds as inhibitors of the K-Ras4B–PDE6δ dissociation. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations were performed to estimate the binding affinity and the anchorage sites of I-C19 in K-Ras4B–PDE6δ. K-Ras4B signaling pathways were assessed in HCT116, LoVo and SW620 colorectal cancer cells after I-C19 treatment. Two murine colorectal cancer models were used to evaluate the I-C19 therapeutic effect. The in vivo biokinetic profiles of I-C19 and 131I-C19 and the tumor radiation dose were also estimated. The K-Ras4B–PDE6δ stabilizer, 131I-C19, was highly selective and demonstrated a cytotoxic effect ten times greater than unlabeled I-C19. I-C19 prevented K-Ras4B activation and decreased its dependent signaling pathways. The in vivo administration of I-C19 (30 mg/kg) greatly reduced tumor growth in colorectal cancer. The biokinetic profile showed renal and hepatobiliary elimination, and the highest radiation absorbed dose was delivered to the tumor (52 Gy/74 MBq). The data support the idea that 131I-C19 is a novel K-Ras4B/PDE6δ stabilizer with two functionalities: as a K-Ras4B signaling inhibitor and as a compound with radiotherapeutic activity against colorectal tumors.

Foeniculum vulgare is used for the treatment of diarrhea in Mexican traditional medicine. Hexane extract showed 94 % inhibition of Giardia duodenalis trophozoites at 300 μg/mL. Therefore, 20 constituents of hexane extract were evaluated to determine their antigiardial activity. Interestingly, six compounds showed good activity toward the parasite. These compounds were (1R,4S) (+)-Camphene (61%), (R)(−)-Carvone (66%), estragole (49%), p-anisaldehyde (67%), 1,3-benzenediol (56%), and trans, trans-2,4-undecadienal (97%). The aldehyde trans, trans-2,4-undecadienal was the most active compound with an IC50 value of 72.11 µg/mL against G. duodenalis trophozoites. This aldehyde was less toxic (IC50 588.8 µg/mL) than positive control metronidazole (IC50 83.5 µg/mL) against Vero cells. The above results could support the use of F. vulgare in Mexican traditional medicine.

This work presents a novel methodology to implement a fuzzy inference system (FIS) to overcome the measurement ambiguity that is typically observed in interferometric sensors. This ambiguity occurs when the measurand is determined by tracing the wavelength position of a peak or dip of a spectral fringe. Consequently, the sensor measurement range is typically limited to the equivalent of 1 free spectral range (FSR). Here, it is demonstrated that by using the proposed methodology, the measurement range of this type of sensor can be widened several times by overcoming the ambiguity over some FSR periods. Furthermore, in order to support the viability of the methodology, it was applied to a couple of temperature interferometric sensors. Finally, experimental results demonstrated that it was possible to quintuple the measurement range of one of the tested sensors with a mean absolute error of MAE = 0.0045 °C, while for the second sensor, the measurement range was doubled with an MAE = 0.0073 °C.

In the last few years, the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the transportation sector has contributed to the increased use of electric rechargeable batteries. At present, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are the most commonly used in electric vehicles. Although once their storage capacity has dropped to below 80–70% it is no longer possible to use these batteries in EVs, it is feasible to use them in second-life applications as stationary energy storage systems. The purpose of this study is to present an embedded system that allows a Nissan® LEAF Li-ion battery to communicate with an Ingecon® Sun Storage 1Play inverter, for control and monitoring purposes. The prototype was developed using an Arduino® microcontroller and a graphical user interface (GUI) on LabVIEW®. The experimental tests have allowed us to determine the feasibility of using Li-ion battery packs (BPs) coming from the automotive sector with an inverter with no need for a prior disassembly and rebuilding process. Furthermore, this research presents a programming and hardware methodology for the development of the embedded systems focused on second-life electric vehicle Li-ion batteries. One second-life battery pack coming from a Nissan® Leaf and aged under real driving conditions was integrated into a residential microgrid serving as an energy storage system (ESS).

Tires play a critical role in vehicle safety. Proper modeling of tire–road interaction is essential for optimal performance of active safety systems. This work studies the influence of temperature, longitudinal vehicle speed, steering frequency, vertical load, and inflation pressure on lateral tire dynamics. To this end, a tire test bench that allows the accurate control of these parameters and the measurement of the variables of interest was used. The obtained results made it possible to propose a simple model that allowed the determination of relaxation length as a function of tire vertical load and vehicle linear speed, and the determination of a representative tread temperature. Additionally, a model has been proposed to determine the lateral friction coefficient from the aforementioned temperature. Finally, results also showed that some variables had little influence on the parameters that characterize lateral dynamics.
