Are all bleak images of natural man necessarily assignable to a conservative style of thought? This is not the case I suggest with Francois Flahault's de-idealized anthropology -- realist yet informed by a social-solidarist ethic. My introduction to Flahault's central concepts, themes and methods tracks his attack on conceptions of selfhood as possessed of transcendent moral autonomy. And we will see how Flahault's this-worldly anthropology plays out in his arguments about malice: its sources in experiences of a sense of (not) existing, and its unsettling relations to morality and politics. I argue that Flahault might be read as contributing to recasting the ethical aspect of political realism. Surprisingly, in a cardinal respect his moral anthropology echoes the anti-redemptive image of human imperfections propounded by the early modern 'civil prudential' jurisprudence of Samuel Pufendorf. I show how Flahault uses his own moral anthropology to modify the mission of reformist social policy and put a case for seeing his program as a contribution to a civil prudential philosophy of government which is irreducible to conservatism and at odds with versions of liberalism based on metaphysical images of autonomy. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For over 50 years, we have been regaled with anecdotal accounts of an acclimation period for newly commissioned Supreme Court justices by scholars, reporters, and Court insiders alike. Some of the justices themselves have admitted that it took several years to become accustomed to the increased workload, new processes, and prestige that accompany this high office. But given these extensive reports, why have academics found the acclimation effect so elusive? To answer this question, I first draw from the anthropology, management, psychology, and sociology literature to develop a theory of judicial acclimation. This theory leads to a novel hypothesisâ??namely that the variance around a justice's votes should increase with time, as the justice is able to decrease his reliance on cognitive heuristics. Where did the state come from? What are the origins of government and political authority? Are human beings capable of living without political community or order? These questions pose some of the most enduring issues in the history of Western political thought. Even Aristotle, who held man to be a political animal, provided an account of the development of the polis out of prior forms of human association. The same questions have also been taken up by anthropological studies of early societies, which consider from a more empirical perspective the earliest governments and expressions of political sentiment. It may be thought that anthropology has nothing to say to political theory, if only because the latter are supposedly “philosophical anthropologies” or “rational reconstructions” rather than literal or empirical in bearing. My research project challenges such evasion by arguing that political theory has much to learn from the inquiry of anthropology into the early development of political societies and governments and the rules and regulations arising therefrom. Hence, I hope to bring the work of anthropologists and the study of political theory into a fruitful dialogue that has been thus far nonexistent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most definitions of religion in Political Science are based on Protestant notions of faith as more important than practice in capturing religious world views. The tendency to overstate the importance of text is based on monotheistic assumptions based on particular theological traditions. The operationalization of religion can only follow a more universal, or self-consciously particularistic, definition of religion. Debates within anthropology and sociology over culture inform the definition of religion offered here.
