The article focuses on U.S. bellwether governors Ted Strickland of Ohio and Charlie Crist of Florida. Strickland, elected in November 2006 as the first Democratic governor of the state in 16 years, spent six terms in Congress and voted to oppose the Iraq war from the start. Republican Crist is using issues such as tax relief and global warming to govern from the middle in his state. The governors have been considered as vice presidential material due to the significance of both states' voters to the presidential election in 2007.
