Abstract Intrinsically stretchable organic photovoltaics have emerged as a prominent candidate for the next-generation wearable power generators regarding their structural design flexibility, omnidirectional stretchability, and in-plane deformability. However, formulating strategies to fabricate intrinsically stretchable organic photovoltaics that exhibit mechanical robustness under both repetitive strain cycles and high tensile strains remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate high-performance intrinsically stretchable organic photovoltaics with an initial power conversion efficiency of 14.2%, exceptional stretchability (80% of the initial power conversion efficiency maintained at 52% tensile strain), and cyclic mechanical durability (95% of the initial power conversion efficiency retained after 100 strain cycles at 10%). The stretchability is primarily realised by delocalising and redistributing the strain in the active layer to a highly stretchable PEDOT:PSS electrode developed with a straightforward incorporation of ION E, which simultaneously enhances the stretchability of PEDOT:PSS itself and meanwhile reinforces the interfacial adhesion with the polyurethane substrate. Both enhancements are pivotal factors ensuring the excellent mechanical durability of the PEDOT:PSS electrode, which further effectively delays the crack initiation and propagation in the top active layer, and enables the limited performance degradation under high tensile strains and repetitive strain cycles.

Abstract Microfluidic flowmeters are a powerful and highly accurate tool, enabling precise monitoring and measurements of flows of gases and fluids in a range of applications. Here we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a whispering gallery modes flowmeter composed of a liquid crystal-filled nested capillary. Whispering gallery modes are excited by a tapered fiber coupled perpendicularly to the nested capillary. The air flowing through the capillary cools it down, which leads to a temperature-induced change of the refractive index of the nematic liquid crystals. This change in turn leads to a spectral shift of the whispering gallery modes resonances, which can be linked to the airflow rate in the capillary. The temperature change in the liquid crystals was simulated considering the heat transfer between the liquid crystals and airflow in the capillary, which indicated that the liquid crystals temperature decreases in a nonlinear manner with the increase of the airflow rate. A flowmeter with the maximum sensitivity of 0.3423 nm·min·mL−1 in the flowrate range from 0 to 2.52 nm·min·mL−1 and a resolution of 5.72 pm was demonstrated in our experiment. The proposed sensor provides a platform for whispering gallery modes flowmeters and offers the advantages of good stability, high sensitivity, and miniature size.

Abstract This study aims to develop a clinical diagnostic model for assessing the need for initial abdominal surgery in patients diagnosed with Crohn's disease (CD) and create a nomogram to facilitate clinical decision-making. A total of 164 surgical CD patients and 230 control CD patients were included in this retrospective analysis. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (Lasso) regression and binomial logistic regression were employed to select clinical variables. The 394 CD patients were randomly allocated to a training set and a validation set in a 7:3 ratio. The filtered variables were used to establish a diagnostic model and nomogram in the training set, subsequently validated in the testing set. Decision Curve Analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve were constructed to validate the clinical applicability of the model. Binomial logistic regression analysis identified seven clinical variables with a p-value less than 0.01, including Biomarker (B), Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR), Intestinal obstruction, Albumin (ALB), Crohn's Disease Activity Index (CDAI), Myocardial Flow Index (MFI), and C-reactive protein (CRP). These variables were utilized to establish the diagnostic model. Calibration curves showed good alignment, with a C-index of 0.996 in the training set and 0.990 in the testing set. DCA and clinical impact curve demonstrated that the diagnostic model had good clinical efficiency and could provide clinical benefits. A validated diagnostic model for determining the timing of the first abdominal operation in CD patients was established and evaluated, showing high discriminative ability, calibration, and clinical efficiency. It can be utilized by clinicians to assess the optimal timing for transitioning CD patients from medical treatment to surgical intervention, providing valuable references for individualized treatment decisions for CD patients.

Abstract The high-frequency pulse flow, equivalent to the natural frequency of rocks, is generated by a self-excited oscillating cavity to achieve resonance rock-breaking. The flow field and oscillating mechanism of the self-excited oscillating cavity were simulated using the large eddy simulation method of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). A field-scale testing apparatus was developed to investigate the impulse characteristics and verify the simulation results. The results show that the fluid at the outlet at the tool is deflected due to the pulse oscillation of the fluid. The size and shape of low-pressure vortices constantly change, leading to periodic changes in fluid impedance within the oscillating cavity. The impulse frequency reaches its highest point when the length–diameter ratio is 0.67. As the length–diameter ratio increases, the tool pressure loss also increases. Regarding the cavity thickness, the impulse frequency of the oscillating cavity initially decreases, then increases, and finally decreases again. Moreover, both the impulse frequency and pressure loss increase with an increase in displacement. The numerical simulation findings align with the experimental results, thus confirming the validity of the theoretical model. This research provides theoretical guidance for the practical application of resonance rock-breaking technology.

Abstract CTCF plays an important role in 3D genome organization by adjusting the strength of chromatin insulation at TAD boundaries, where clustered CBS (CTCF-binding site) elements are often arranged in a tandem array with a complex divergent or convergent orientation. Here, using Pcdh and HOXD loci as a paradigm, we look into the clustered CTCF TAD boundaries and find that, counterintuitively, outward-oriented CBS elements are crucial for inward enhancer-promoter interactions as well as for gene regulation. Specifically, by combinatorial deletions of a series of putative enhancer elements in mice in vivo or CBS elements in cultured cells in vitro, in conjunction with chromosome conformation capture and RNA-seq analyses, we show that deletions of outward-oriented CBS elements weaken the strength of long-distance intra-TAD promoter-enhancer interactions and enhancer activation of target genes. Our data highlight the crucial role of outward-oriented CBS elements within the clustered CTCF TAD boundaries in developmental gene regulation and have interesting implications on the organization principles of clustered CTCF sites within TAD boundaries.

Abstract Mine water inrush can cause property losses and casualties, but current theoretical and technological approaches cannot accurately predict such events. Through the networked deployment of water level sensors along a mine roadway, a mine water inrush monitoring network was developed, and a multi-constraint and multi-objective optimal deployment method was established. By setting practical constraints of the mining area, water inrush risk level, and installation at specified locations, and considering two objective functions of minimum total cost and minimum average monitoring time, a mathematical model was established. The non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) was designed to solve the model. The method temporally and spatially optimized the network, which was then verified in the Beiyangzhuang coal mine in north China. The average response time of the monitoring network was 916 s using only 28 water level sensors. The higher the water inrush risk level, the shorter the monitoring network response time. Under the 2, 3, and 4 risk levels, the network’s response time to simulated water inrush accidents was less than 3000, 2100, and 900 s, respectively. The multi-constraint and multi-objective optimization layout method further enhanced the effectiveness of the network, providing a novel system for the early warning of mine water inrush.

Abstract The current epidemic status of diabetic retinopathy in China is unclear. A national prevalence survey of diabetic complications was conducted. 50,564 participants with gradable non-mydriatic fundus photographs were enrolled. The prevalence rates (95% confidence intervals) of diabetic retinopathy and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy were 16.3% (15.3%–17.2%) and 3.2% (2.9%–3.5%), significantly higher in the northern than in the southern regions. The differences in prevalence between those who had not attained a given metabolic goal and those who had were more pronounced for Hemoglobin A1c than for blood pressure and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The participants with vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy had significantly higher proportions of visual impairment and blindness than those with non-vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy. The likelihoods of diabetic retinopathy and vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy were also associated with education levels, household income, and multiple dietary intakes. Here, we show multi-level factors associated with the presence and the severity of diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract The femtosecond time-resolved impulsive stimulated Raman scattering (fs-ISRS) has been performed to study the low frequency lattice mode dynamics of the RDX crystal. Through Fourier filtering, four lattice mode dynamics is distinguished from the time-resolved spectrum. And the wavenumbers and time constants of these four lattice modes are determined by fitting their dynamic curves. The energy dispersion paths of these four lattice modes are deduced from these fitting parameters. Compared with the other three lattice modes, the lattice mode with wavenumber 30 cm−1 has a very longer life time. We consider that the excitation of this lattice mode more likely to cause the damage of the intermolecular interaction under the strong external stimulation.

Light-matter interaction has been dominated by Born-Oppenheimer approximation for centuries. Here the authors proposed a light-matter interaction mechanism beyond this approximation, proposing stimulated phonon polariton-mediated light-matter interaction, showing further understanding and applications in the fields of optics/photonics and condensed-matter physics.

Abstract Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Ambrosia trifida are annual invasive plants that cause serious harm to agriculture, animal husbandry, and human health. Based on the important characteristic of high-density, cluster distribution of their populations, it is speculated that its autotoxins have an effect on density regulation. This study explored the regulation of autotoxicity on intraspecific density. We used water extracts from two plants to compare and verify the autotoxicity of seed germination, analysed the components of autotoxins. The results showed that A. artemisiifolia and A. trifida had significant autotoxicity, and the highest inhibition rates on seed germination were 27.21% and 77.94%, respectively; ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed that chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, and vanillin were the main autotoxins of the two plants. After the seeds were washed with water, the germination recovery rate of seeds increased with the increased of inhibition degree of autotoxins treatment. Therefore, this study verified the autotoxicity of A. artemisiifolia and A. trifida, which can promote and inhibit the seed germination of A. artemisiifolia and A. trifida to regulate intraspecific competition.

Abstract Osteoarthritis (OA) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Considerable progress has been made using stem-cell-derived therapy. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that the therapeutic effects of BMSCs in chondrogenesis could be attributed to the secreted small extracellular vesicles (sEVs). Herein, we investigated the feasibility of applying engineered EVs with chondrogenic priming as a biomimetic tool in chondrogenesis. We demonstrated that EVs derived from TGFβ3-preconditioned BMSCs presented enriched specific miRNAs that could be transferred to native BMSCs to promote chondrogenesis. In addition, We found that EVs derived from TGFβ3-preconditioned BMSCs rich in miR-455 promoted OA alleviation and cartilage regeneration by activating the SOX11/FOXO signaling pathway. Moreover, the designed T3-EV hydrogel showed great potential in cartilage defect treatment. Our findings provide new means to apply biosafe engineered EVs from chondrogenic primed-BMSCs for cartilage repair and OA treatment, expanding the understanding of chondrogenesis and OA development modulated by EV-miRNAs in vivo.

Abstract Water inrush is one of the major mining disasters that may lead to numerous casualties. The development of information techniques makes it possible to monitor the occurrence and evolution of water inrush. Then, locating monitors for water inrush becomes a primary problem. This study presents a method of optimal location of water level sensors by constructing a set covering model. The monitoring scope of the water level sensor at each location in a given time is computed first based on the numerical simulation of water spreading along mine tunnels. In this simulation, the water inrush quantity is assigned using the mine drainage capability over which an accident may occur. Then the greedy algorithm is used to optimize the number and positions of water level sensors. As results, a mine water disaster can be monitored in the given time after it happened. The proposed method is then verified in the Beiyangzhuang coal mine in the North China. The results show that at least 22, 36, 42, 64 and 106 water level sensors are needed to monitor water disasters in the whole mine within 60, 30, 20, 10 and 5 min, respectively.

Abstract A polarization-dependent all-fiber comb filter based on a combination effect of multimode interference and Mach-Zehnder interferometer was proposed and demonstrated. The comb filter was composed with a short section of multimode fiber (MMF) fusion spliced with a conventional single mode fiber on the one side and a short section of a different type of optical fiber on the other side. The second type of optical fiber is spliced to the MMF with a properly designed misalignment. Different types and lengths of fibers were used to investigate the influence of fiber types and lengths on the performance of the comb filter. Experimentally, several comb filters with free spectral range (FSR) values ranging from 0.236 to 1.524 nm were achieved. The extinction ratio of the comb filter can be adjusted from 6 to 11.1 dB by varying polarization states of the input light, while maintaining the FSR unchanged. The proposed comb filter has the potential to be used in optical dense wavelength division multiplexing communication systems.

Abstract In this work, we demonstrate the strong extrinsic chirality of the larger-area metal nanocrescents by experiments and simulations. Our results show that the metal nanocrescent exhibits giant and tunable circular dichroism (CD) effect, which is intensively dependent on the incident angle of light. We attribute the giant extrinsic chirality of the metal nanocrescent to the excitation efficiencies difference of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes for two kinds of circularly polarized light at a non-zero incident angle. In experiment, the largest CD of 0.37 is obtained at the wavelength of 826 nm with the incident angle of 60°. Furthermore, the CD spectra can be tuned flexibly by changing the metal nanocrescent diameter. Benefitting from the simple, low-cost and mature fabrication process, the proposed large-area metal nanocrescents are propitious to application.

Abstract Deep-ultraviolet (UV) second-harmonics (SHs) have important applications in basic physics and applied sciences. However, it still remains challenging to generate deep-UV SHs especially in optical fibers. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the deep-UV SH generations (SHGs) by combined degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) and surface nonlinearity polarization in an in-house designed and fabricated air-silica photonic crystal fiber (PCF). When femtosecond pump pulses with average input power P av of 650 mW and center wavelength λ p of 810, 820, 830, and 840 nm are coupled into the normal dispersion region close to the zero-dispersion wavelength of the fundamental mode of the PCF, the anti-Stokes waves induced by degenerate FWM process are tunable from 669 to 612 nm. Then, they serve as the secondary pump, and deep-UV SHs are generated within the wavelength range of 334.5 to 306 nm as a result of surface nonlinearity polarization at the core-cladding interface of the PCF. The physical mechanism of the SHGs is confirmed by studying the dependences of the output power P SH of the SHs on the PCF length and time. Finally, we also establish a theoretical model to analyze the SHGs.

Abstract This paper proposes a novel magnetic field sensor based on a microfiber coupler (MFC) combined with a magnetic fluid (MF) in a Sagnac loop formed from a polarization maintaining fiber (PMF). Thanks to the small (~2.6 μm) waist diameter of the MFC, the resulting interference is strongly influenced by the presence of the MF and this leads to the desirable high sensitivity of the structure to the applied magnetic field. The maximum magnetic field sensitivities of −100 pm/mT and −488 pm/mT have been experimentally demonstrated with the PMF lengths of 75 cm and 20 cm respectively in the range of magnetic field strengths from 0 to 200 mT. The dependence of the magnetic field orientation on the performance of the proposed sensor was also examined. The proposed magnetic field sensor is advantageous for applications requiring higher sensitivity over a wide magnetic field range.

Abstract Substance abuse and addiction are worldwide concerns. In China, populated with over 1.3 billion people, emerging studies show a steady increase in substance abuse and substance-related problems. Some of the major challenges include a lack of an effective evaluation platform to determine the health status of substance-addicted subjects. It is known that the intestinal microbiota is associated to the occurrence and development of human diseases. However, the changes of bacterial diversity of intestinal microbiota in substance-addicted subjects have not been clearly characterized. Herein, we examined the composition and diversity of intestinal microbiota in 45 patients with substance use disorders (SUDs) and in 48 healthy controls (HCs). The results show that the observed species diversity index and the abundance of Thauera, Paracoccus, and Prevotella are significantly higher in SUDs compared to HCs. The functional diversity of the putative metagenomes analysis reveals that pathways including translation, DNA replication and repair, and cell growth and death are over-represented while cellular processes and signaling, and metabolism are under-represented in SUDs. Overall, the analyses show that there seem to be changes in the microbiota that are associated with substance use across an array of SUDs, providing fundamental knowledge for future research in substance-addiction assessment tests.

Abstract With the development and application of nanotechnology, large amounts of nanoparticles will be potentially released to the environment and possibly cause many severe health problems. Although the toxicity of nanoparticles has been investigated, prevention and treatment of damages caused by nanoparticles have been rarely studied. Therefore, isotope tracing and improved CT imaging techniques were used to investigate the biodistribution influence between oMWCNTs(oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes) and 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC)/or simvastatin (TD) in vivo. What’s more, biochemical indices in plasma and tissue histology were measured to further study therapeutic effects on the damages of oMWCNTs in mice. Isotope tracing and improved CT imaging results showed that low dosages of DOPC and TD didn’t affect the distribution of oMWCNTs in mice; conversely, the distribution and metabolism of DOPC and TD were influenced by oMWCNTs. Moreover, DOPC and/or TD improved the biocompatibility of oMWCNTs in erythrocyte suspension in vitro. Biochemical index and histopathological results indicated that DOPC and TD didn’t prevent injuries caused by oMWCNTs effectively. But TD showed a good therapeutic effect for damages. This study is the first to investigate prevention and treatment effects of drugs on damages caused by oMWCNTs and provides new insights and breakthroughs for management of nanoparticles on health hazards.

Parabolic pulses have important applications in both basic and applied sciences, such as high power optical amplification, optical communications, all-optical signal processing, etc. The generation of parabolic similaritons in tapered hydrogenated amorphous silicon photonic wires at telecom (λ ~ 1550 nm) and mid-IR (λ ≥ 2100 nm) wavelengths is demonstrated and analyzed. The self-similar theory of parabolic pulse generation in passive waveguides with increasing nonlinearity is presented. A generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is used to describe the coupled dynamics of optical field in the tapered hydrogenated amorphous silicon photonic wires with either decreasing dispersion or increasing nonlinearity. The impacts of length dependent higher-order effects, linear and nonlinear losses including two-photon absorption, and photon-generated free carriers, on the pulse evolutions are characterized. Numerical simulations show that initial Gaussian pulses will evolve into the parabolic pulses in the waveguide taper designed.

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) and Parkinsonism are common neurodegenerative disorders with continuously increasing prevalence, causing high global burdens. However, data concerning the comorbidity burden of patients with PD or Parkinsonism in China are lacking. To investigate the health condition and comorbidity burden, a total of 3367 PD and 823 Parkinsonism patients were included from seven tertiary hospitals in seven cities across China from 2003 to 2012. Their comorbidity burden was collected and quantified by the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index (ECI) and Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI). The comorbidity spectra differed between PD and Parkinsonism patients. Compared with PD patients, Parkinsonism patients were older (69.8 ± 11.5 vs. 67.9 ± 11.4, P

Abstract The fabrication of nanoporous anatase TiO2 on a microstructured Ti base is achieved through an innovative hybrid fabrication method involving femtosecond laser ablation coupled with H2O2 oxidation and annealing. The anatase TiO2 micro-nanostructures have superior photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange due to enhanced light harvesting capacity and surface area. The photodegradation efficiency increases by a maximum of 80% compared to the nanoporous anatase TiO2 fabricated through H2O2 oxidation and annealing only (without femtosecond laser ablation). Meanwhile, The anatase TiO2 micro-nanostructures show good cyclic performance, indicating a great potential for practical application. The proposed hybrid method can easily tune the morphology and size of microstructure by simply adjusting the femtosecond laser parameters, showing advantage in fabricating of micro-nanostructures with a rich variety of morphologies.

Abstract The tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) Sunitinib is one the therapies approved for advanced renal cell carcinoma. Here, we undertake proteogenomic profiling of 115 tumors from patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) undergoing Sunitinib treatment and reveal the molecular basis of differential clinical outcomes with TKI therapy. We find that chromosome 7q gain-induced mTOR signaling activation is associated with poor therapeutic outcomes with Sunitinib treatment, whereas the aristolochic acid signature and VHL mutation synergistically caused enhanced glycolysis is correlated with better prognosis. The proteomic and phosphoproteomic analysis further highlights the responsibility of mTOR signaling for non-response to Sunitinib. Immune landscape characterization reveals diverse tumor microenvironment subsets in ccRCC. Finally, we construct a multi-omics classifier that can detect responder and non-responder patients (receiver operating characteristic–area under the curve, 0.98). Our study highlights associations between ccRCC molecular characteristics and the response to TKI, which can facilitate future improvement of therapeutic responses.

Abstract Organic nonlinear optical materials have potential in applications such as lightings and bioimaging, but tend to have low photoluminescent quantum yields and are prone to lose the nonlinear optical activity. Herein, we demonstrate to weave large-area, flexible organic nonlinear optical membranes composed of 4-N,N-dimethylamino-4ʹ-Nʹ-methyl-stilbazolium tosylate@cyclodextrin host-guest supramolecular complex. These membranes exhibited a record high photoluminescence quantum yield of 73.5%, and could continuously emit orange luminescence even being heated at 300 °C, thus enabling the fabrication of thermotolerant light-emitting diodes. The nonlinear optical property of these membranes can be well-preserved even in polar environment. The supramolecular assemblies with multiphoton absorption characteristics were used for in vivo real-time imaging of Escherichia coli at 1000 nm excitation. These findings demonstrate to achieve scalable fabrication of organic nonlinear optical materials with high photoluminescence quantum yields, and good stability against thermal stress and polar environment for high-performance, durable optoelectronic devices and humanized multiphoton bio-probes.

Abstract Homogenous transition-metal catalysts bearing a chiral ligand are widely used for asymmetric hydrogenation of unsaturated compounds such as olefins and ketones, providing efficient concise access to products with chiral carbon centers. However, distinguishing the re and si prochiral faces of a double bond bearing two substituents that are sterically and electronically similar is challenging for these catalysts. Herein, we report a relay strategy for constructing compounds with a chiral gem-diaryl carbon center by means of a combination of selective arene exchange between 1,1-diarylethylenes or benzophenones with (naphthalene)Cr(CO)3 and subsequent asymmetric hydrogenation. During the hydrogenation, the Cr(CO)3 unit facilitate differentiation of the two prochiral faces of the substrate double bond via formation of a three-dimensional complex with one of the aromatic rings by selective arene exchange. Density functional theory calculations reveal that during the hydrogenation, chromium coordination affected π–π stacking of the substrate and the catalyst ligand, leading to differentiation of the prochiral faces.

The existing hole-transporting materials cause problems in the cost and scalability of the perovskite solar cells.
