The study aims to evaluate the energy response of the thermoluminescent dosemeter (TLD) CaSO4:Dy from high energy photon beams produced from medical linear accelerator. The test was performed on the polymethyl methacrylate phantom surface and at the depth of dose maximum with a source-to-surface distance of 100 cm and the radiation field size of 12 × 12 cm. The results were compared with the TLD response exposed to 60Co standard source. The results show that the TLD response to the linac's photon differs >30% compared to the TLD response to 60Co exposure when measured at the phantom surface, while at the depth of maximum dose the response is similar (< ±10%), indicating that the TLD response is no longer dependent on the energy. This implies that the current dose reading evaluation based on 60Co calibration curve should be corrected to obtain more accurate dose report of the radiation workers., (© The Author(s) 2024. The integration of the ORION digital signal processing-based MCA system coupled with a 3″ × 3″ NaI(Tl) detector assembly with a GM detector for counting beta (β) has eliminated the need for a standalone β-γ method in which U3O8 is determined by gross β and gross γ counting. Uraniferous and mixed U-Th samples were taken up for study and compared with the results obtained from Canberra p-type coaxial high resolution gamma ray spectrometry detector. In uraniferous samples, U3O8 values obtained are within ±10%, whereas in the case of mixed U-Th samples, U3O8 values are within ±15%. Regression graphs drawn between the outcomes from the two analytical systems indicate R2 > 0.95 for Ra(eU3O8) and ThO2. In uraniferous samples, the R2 value for U3O8 was found to be > 0.99, but in mixed U-Th samples, it is 0.92. The closeness of agreement between the results obtained from two methods at various concentrations over the analytical range shows that the integrated system is suitable for the quantitative determination of eU3O8, U3O8, Ra(eU3O8), ThO2 and K in geological rock samples., (© The Author(s) 2024. In India, the prevailing approach to eye lens dosimetry is the placement of an existing dosemeter on the forehead region after slight modification serves as a dedicated Eye Lens Dosemeter. A methodology for estimating the eye lens dose in terms of the Hp(3) has been previously explored employing an algorithm based on the response characteristics of this dosemeter using ISO slab phantom. It was observed that the performance of the dosemeter in terms of Hp(3) using previous algorithm showed under response at higher angles of incidence and photon beams of energy < 200 keV. Further, study was conducted to modify the algorithm following the latest ISO recommendations. This involved generation of data from the response of existing dosemeter on a cylindrical phantom. Radiation dosimetry is an important task for assessing the biological damages created in human being due to ionising radiation exposure. Ionising radiation being invisible and beyond the perception of human natural sensors, the dosimetry equipments/systems are the utmost requirement for its measurement. Retrospective measurement of radiation doses is a challenging task as conventional radiation dosemeters are not available at the exposure site. The material/s in close proximity of exposed individual or individuals' biological samples may be used as retrospective radiation sensor for dosimetry purpose. Environment materials such as sand, bricks, ceramics, sand stones, quartz, feldspar, glasses and electronic chips have been utilised using TL (Thermoluminescence) techniques for retrospective gamma dose (min 10 cGy) measurement. Electron Spin Resonance techniques have been employed to human biological samples such as tooth enamel, bones, nails, hair, etc. and reported for dosimetry for ~20 cGy min dose measurement. Some commercial glasses have been found sensitive enough to measure the minimum gamma doses of the order of 100 cGy using TL techniques. For internal retrospective dosimetry, the radioactivity contamination assessment in food items, water, other edible product and ambient air are the prerequisites. The radioactivity concentration vis-à-vis their consumption rate may help in controlling the internal contamination and estimation of dose absorption in human body. Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur has been working extensively on the dosimetry techniques for external dose measurement using environmental material and developed portable contamination monitoring systems for food and water radioactivity measurement in the range of 50 Bq kg-1 to 1000 kBq kg-1 in 60 s measurement time. The dosimetry of different minerals is carried out to investigate the dose received by the population in case of a nuclear accident. Retrospective dosimetry is a field where there is a continuous search to find new materials. Beach sand minerals, namely quartz and zircon, were exposed to beta and gamma radiation and studied separately. A comparison of the thermoluminescence (TL) output of different peaks of quartz for beta and gamma was studied. Comparison of quartz peaks with the TL output of zircon peaks was carried out. The features of the glow curves of LiF:Mg,Ti are dependent on many parameters of irradiation, storage, ionisation density and readout. These are presented herein with emphasis on their complexity. Successful applications require some understanding of the great diversity of the glow curves. Glow curve analysis/deconvolution in order to better understand the mechanisms is a 'tricky business' even with Tm-Tstop analysis. The metrological quality of a measurement is characterised by evaluating the uncertainty in the measurement. In this paper, uncertainty in personal dose measured using individual monitoring CaSO4:Dy-based thermoluminescence dosimeter badge is evaluated by application of the guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement method. The present dose reporting quantity, whole body dose (WBD) and the proposed quantity, personal dose equivalent, Hp(10) has been used as measurands. The influence of various input quantities on the measurement were analyzed through tests that conform to the requirements of the International Electrotechnical Commission IEC 62387. The study found that the expanded uncertainties for WBD and Hp(10) measurements were 63.4% and 41.4%, respectively, corresponding to a 95% coverage probability for workplace fields covering a wide photon energy range (33-1250 keV). However, the uncertainty estimates were quite lower for the type of workplaces that are identified using the dose evaluation algorithm. The performance of two thermoluminescent dosimetry systems (RGD-3D and RE2000) manufactured in China and Finland was compared. Both of these dosimetry systems demonstrated satisfactory results as their performance met the requirements of the standard. The two dosimetry systems showed similar performance in the energy response. The RGD-3D dosimetry system performed better in nonlinear response, minimum detectable level and blind sample tests, whereas the RE2000 dosimetry system showed better stability., (© The Author(s) 2024. The effect of natural rapid cooling and oven slow cooling on the precision of thermoluminescence measurements of LiF:Mg,Ti is investigated. Three separate series of measurements resulted in average precisions of 5.1 and 5.0%, respectively. Extremity radiation monitoring is an important tool for the assessment of occupational exposures to staff at a variety of workplaces where ionising radiation is used. This work shows the feasibility of applying 3D printing for the development of customisable ring dosemeters. The rings were developed using two types of resin, hard and flexible and has the possibility of sterilisation using different techniques. The printed ring dosemeter was associated with BeO optically stimulated dosemeters. The energy and angular response were found within ±20% in the energy range from 24 to 662 keV and from 0° to 60° angle of incidence. This contributes to the reduction of measurement uncertainty when compared with currently used thermoluminescent detectors dosemeters. The new ring dosemeter showed a satisfactory response with respect to the performance criteria of the IEC 62387 Standard, in addition to providing improved ergonomics in relation to the commercial ring dosemeter., (© The Author(s) 2023. A seeming contradiction in the prediction of the spatially correlated trapping center/luminescent center model applied to LiF:Mg,Ti has been the linear/supralinear behavior of the dose response of glow peak 5a. In the TC/LC model, the localised electron-hole recombination, giving rise to glow peak 5a, is expected to result in an extended region of linear dose response. Deconvolution of the glow curves based on first order kinetic peak shapes results, however, in a dose response of peak 5a, which closely resembles the linear/supralinear dose response of peak 5. It is demonstrated herein that when general-order kinetics peak shapes are used for peak 5a, the analysis can result in a linear dose response of glow peak 5a up to dose levels as high as 30 Gy, well beyond the 1-Gy onset of supralinearity of peak 5. Thermoluminescence dosimetry is considered as an effective method in estimating the absorbed doses to organs in different imaging modalities. The present study focuses on dosimetry in dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans, for patients, and phantoms in various imaging centres. The cubical LiF (Mg, Ti) thermoluminescence dosemeters were inserted inside the holes of the Rando phantom slabs, to measure the absorbed dose to different organs in the whole body and lumbar scans. According to the results the maximum entrance skin dose was found to be 202.06 μGy for Hologic discovery W, which uses the fan beam scanning mode. The Norland XR-800 device took the scans with a much lower dose, as it uses the pencil beam for scanning the patients. The results of the study show that the radiation beam type, patient thickness, imaging technique and scan time may affect the radiation dose received by patient., (© The Author(s) 2022. The peak 5 in LiF: Mg, Ti includes sub-peaks 5a and 5b, which occur at the temperatures lower and higher than that of peak 5, respectively. Peak 5a in LiF:Mg,Ti occurs due to the localized recombination of trapping/luminescence center (TC/LC), in which the electron is released from the electron trap by obtaining energy from heat and recombines through the tunneling phenomenon with a hole located in the adjacent luminescence center at a distance of 3 nm. Concerning the standard TLD tablets, which are composed of micron-sized particles, the peak 5a either does not occur or appears with very low intensity, which is insignificant in terms of dosimetry. Thus, the present study focuses on synthesizing thermoluminescent nanoparticles by co-precipitation method in several stages by citing models based on the maintenance of linear behavior of thermoluminescence nanopowders up to high doses and its relationship with localized electron-hole recombination. In addition, by changing the concentration of ingredients, altering the temperature of the reaction medium and presence or absence of surfactant, nanoparticles with suitable geometric shapes were achieved. The synthesized nanopowders were irradiated with different doses of alpha and gamma, and after analyzing the glow curves, the increase in peak 5a/5 was reported as the main factor in nanodosimetry. Based on the results, the LiF: Mg, Ti thermoluminescence nanopowders can increase the 5a/5 ratio and can be used as a convenient, inexpensive and practical tool to estimate the amount of energy deposited by the beams in nanoscale., (© The Author(s) 2022. An experimental investigation into the possibility of dose-rate effects and wall scatter in the thermoluminescent response of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) was carried out. The investigation was motivated by theoretical simulations predicting the possible presence of dose-rate effects coupled with the lack of detailed experimental studies. The dose rate was varied by changing the source to sample distance, by the use of attenuators, sources of 137Cs of various activities, filtration and the construction of identical geometrical irradiators of Teflon and stainless steel. Four levels of dose in the linear dose response region were studied at 10-2 Gy, 1.5 × 10-2 Gy, 0.1 Gy and 0.5 Gy to avoid complications in interpretation due to supralinearity above 1 Gy. At the dose of 1.5 × 10-2 Gy, the dose rate was varied by five orders of magnitude from 4.9 × 10-3 Gy s-1 to 4.9 × 10-8 Gy s-1. At the other levels of dose, a one to two orders of magnitude in dose rate was achieved. Within the measurement uncertainty of 5-10%, no dose-rate effects were observed in any of the experimental measurements and no changes in the shape of the glow curve were observed. The maximum wall scatter effect (Teflon to stainless steel) was measured at ~8% within the experimental uncertainty and well below expectations. The thermoluminescence (TL) spectra and dose responses of strontium sulphate doped with rare earth ions show that the SrSO4:Eu2+ phosphor might reasonably be assumed a isoelectronic trap sample which has unique TL characteristics: there is only one obvious glow peak at 385 nm, 489 K in the TL 3D emission spectra and its TL dose response is linear-sublinear. However, there are several elementary glow peaks in the TL 3D emission spectra and their TL dose responses are linear-supralinear for SrSO4:RE3+ (RE = Dy, Tm). These TL peaks occurred from low to high temperature indicate that the traps are distributed in different energy levels. When a suitable amount of other impurities co-doped into these SrSO4:RE3+, such as phosphorus, the relative intensities of these elementary glow peaks are changed significantly, especially the TL peak ~500 K is enhanced while the peaks at lower temperature are suppressed. The enhanced peak of SrSO4:RE3+,P is attributed to the deep traps. Their dose responses remain in nonlinearity when co-doped phosphorus. The above results and the luminescence properties of other sulphate doped rare earths impurities illustrate that the TL characteristics depend on the structure of defect complexes which can be assumed the basic elements in the TL multi-stage processes., (© The Author(s) 2019. A two-phased retrospective cross-sectional study analysed the occupational dose and radiation protection practice among medical workers in two hospitals in the UAE. Phase 1 evaluated radiation protection practice using a questionnaire, whereas phase 2 assessed the occupational dose. Readings of 952 thermoluminescence dosimeters were analyzed. The result showed 52% of medical workers have a good level of radiation protection practice. Readings of 952 thermoluminescence dosimeters were analyzedAverage annual effective dose per worker ranged from 0.39 to 0.83 mSv. Cardiologists and nurses displayed a higher average of occupational radiation dose compared to other workers. There were no significant correlations between radiation protection practice and hospital, occupation or department. Finally, the occupational dose was within the international and national limits, but the reduction of radiation dose to cardiologist and nurses is essential. A new thermoluminescence (TL) general order glow curve fit function in terms of the intensity of peak maximum, Im and the peak temperature, Tm is presented in which thermal quenching (TQ) effect has been taken into account. Also, the conventional general order model and the new presented function were fitted to the glow peak 5 of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) and the kinetic parameters were obtained for different heating rates as the results of fitting procedure. It was found that increasing the heating rate, which makes the TQ more prominent, causes more divergence between the kinetic parameters extracted by applying two models. Considering that the TL intensity and the glow peak area reduce with shifting the glow peak to higher temperatures as a result of TQ, the new presented function gives more reliable results for the kinetic parameters., (© The Author(s) 2019. Track-etched detectors are commonly used also for radiation monitoring onboard International Space Station. To be registered in track-etched detectors, the particle needs to meet several criteria-it must have linear energy transfer above the detection threshold and strike the detector's surface under an angle higher than the so-called critical angle. Linear energy transfer is then estimated from calibration curve from the etch rate ratio V that is calculated from parameters of individual tracks appearing on the detector's surface after chemical etching. It has been observed that V can depend on the incident angle and this dependence can vary for different detector materials, etching and evaluating conditions. To investigate angular dependence, detectors (Harzlas TD-1) were irradiated at HIMAC by several ions under angles from 0° to 90°. While it is known that temperatures above 100°C have an effect on the reported dose of a TLD, it is less widely known what the susceptibility is to temperatures below 100°C, temperatures humans could reasonably expect to be exposed to. With the expanding nuclear industry in climates with more extreme temperatures, (e.g. United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia) the effect on a TLD if left on a dashboard of a car need to be evaluated. This research experimentally determined the extent of this thermal susceptibility by testing a range of high temperatures, 40°C - 90°C. The experimental results found that there is a statistically significant reduction in TLD-100H (natLiF:Mg,Cu,P) light output for TLDs there were exposed to temperatures as low as 40°C for 8 hour durations and 50°C for 2 hour durations. The objective of this study is to determine the energy response factors for BeO optically simulated dosemeter (OSLD) using general cavity theory and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. A virtual phantom is constructed in EGSnrc MC program and energy response of BeO OSLDs were simulated at 5 cm depth for x-ray beams ranging from 1.25 to 25 MV and at 2 cm for beams with <250 kV including ISO 4037 narrow beam energies in a virtual water phantom. The energy response factor for a given radiation quality relative to 60Co was determined for BeO and compared to the Al2O3:C and LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters. Burlin cavity theory calculations were done using mean photon energy (MPE) of the beam spectra, while EGSnrc software package was used to carry out MC simulation of full spectra. The cavity theory and MC methods agreed well within the 0.7%. Energy response of x-ray beams at MV range showed a maximum of 1.5% under-response. At energies higher than 150 kV (105 keV MPE) showed no significant difference while a significant under-response were observed at 100 kV (53 keV MPE) and 50 kV (29 keV MPE), ~8 and ~12%, respectively. BeO, Al2O3:C and LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters exhibited very similar energy response at higher energies mainly in the MeV range. At 50 kV (29 keV MPE), however, BeO dosemeter under responded by a factor of 0.878, while Al2O3:C and LiF:Mg,Ti dosemeters over responded by a factor of 3.2 and 1.44, respectively. Furthermore, at low energies, BeO energy response showed dependence on photon spectra. For instance, at 100 kV, the difference was ~8, ~6 and 2% for 53, 60 and 83 keV MPE (ISO 4037N-100), respectively. Furthermore, calibration with 137Cs instead of 60Co resulted up to 1.8% differences in energy response. Both energy spectrum and calibration methods make considerable differences in energy response of OSLDs. This study concludes that BeO chips are nearly energy independent at energies higher than 100 keV MPE, while Al2O3:C dosemeters show an extremely enhanced energy-response ranging between 1.44 and 3.2 at energies between 170 and 29 keV MPE mainly due to dominance of photoelectric effect., (© The Author(s) 2019. The aim of this study was to test two different solid state dosimetry systems for the purpose of end-to-end audits of radiotherapy volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) technique; a lithium formate electron paramagnetic resonance system and a lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimetry system. As a complement to the solid state systems, ion chamber measurements were performed. A polystyrene phantom with a planning target volume (PTV) and an organ at risk (OAR) structure was scanned using CT. A VMAT dose plan was optimized to deliver 2 Gy to the target volume and to minimize the dose to the OAR. The different detectors were inserted into the phantom and the planned dose distribution was delivered. The measured doses were compared to the treatment planning system (TPS) calculated doses. Good agreement was found between the TPS calculated and the measured doses, well accepted for the dose determinations in remote dosimetry audits of VMAT treatment technique., (© The Author(s) 2019. Diatomaceous earth is found in various locations around the planet. It is caused by the deposited exoskeleton material formed by the death of large concentrated populations of diatoms. The exoskeleton is effectively pure silicate and as such becomes a prospective material for retrospective dosimetry and dating. This work investigated the thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence properties of commercially obtained diatomaceous earth. The material was not found to have useful dosimetric properties with conventional TL methodologies but did provide large dose estimates using the Single Aliquot Regeneration technique on some subset samples. These findings for organic silicate did suggest some mechanisms explaining the sensitization process in geological silicate materials utilized in dosimetry and dating. Electron paramagnetic resonance was identified as a potential future method for evaluating this material as it revealed unique signal components not found in igneous or commercially produced silicates., (Published by Oxford University Press 2019.)

The treatment with high doses of ionizing radiation is prescribed for the terminal sterilization of many healthcare products. In order to check the product irradiation, it may be useful to develop suitable detection methods. The aim of this work was to verify the suitability of the thermoluminescence (TL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques to reveal illegal omission of radiation sterilization in glass used for blood test tubes. In particular, this work reports the results of the analysis performed on two batches of glass tubes provided by the same manufacturer. The results indicated that both TL and EPR techniques could reveal the damage induced by high doses of ionizing radiation in the glass allowing the identification of the tubes which were irradiated at the manufacture stage. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and Thermoluminescence (TL) signals have been studied in samples of Gorilla® Glass (GG) from different smartphones as well as some online stores and vendors. Background, radiation-induced and ultraviolet-induced signals were compared between the samples. Significant variability of both EPR and TL signals (in shape and intensity) was observed between samples from different screens as well as over the surface of the same screen, from the same phone. Both the EPR and TL background signals appear to be due to UV exposure during phone manufacture; some phones have higher EPR and TL signals around the edge of the screen, indicating more UV exposure at the edge than in the center. EPR and TL signals in the same GG samples appear correlated: they decayed over the same temperature region; and both hole- and electron-related EPR and TL signals were made up of stable and unstable components (at room temperature)., (© The Author(s) 2019. The present work presents a new user-friendly and dynamic tool, TLDecoxcel, for the computerised curve deconvolution analysis (CCDA) of simple or complex TL glow peaks using Microsoft® Excel. The objective of this paper is to study the effect of consecutive heating of TL elements of a thermoluminescence dosemeter (TLD) card in hot N2 gas-based TLD badge reader. The effect is studied by theoretical simulations of clamped heating profiles of the discs and resulting TL glow curves. The simulated temperature profile accounts for heat transfer to disc from hot gas as well as radiative and convective heat exchanges between the disc and the surrounding. The glow curves are simulated using 10 component glow peak model for CaSO4:Dy using the simulated temperature profile. The shape of the simulated glow curves and trend in total TL signal of the three discs were observed to match closely with the experimental observations when elevated surrounding temperature was considered for simulation. It is concluded that the readout (heating) of adjacent TLD disc affects the surrounding temperature leading to the changes in temperature profile of the next disc., (© The Author(s) 2019. Advantages of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) include high-quality 3D imaging and reduced radiation exposure with relatively low cost. In this study, patient radiation exposure in CBCT implant planning dentistry was measured in terms of Kerma Area Product (KAP). Data were obtained from 217 CBCT scans on 168 individuals using a CS9300 Carestream system. Scans were made using 80-90 kVp, 4-5 mA, 8 and 13.3 s exposure time (depending on voxel size) and a fixed field of view (FOV) of 10 × 10 cm2 (medium). Mean KAP was estimated using two voxel sizes 180 × 180 × 180 μm3 and 200 × 200 × 200 μm3 and found to be 399 and 314 mGycm2, respectively. Corresponding KAP values found in literature ranged between 210 and 2140 mGycm2. Long exposure to radiation from fluoroscopy-guided interventions (FGIs) can be detrimental to both patients and radiologists. The effective doses received by the interventional radiology staff after performing 230 FGIs in a year were assessed by using double dosimetry and five various algorithms. The Shapiro-Wilk test revealed normally-distributed data (p < 0.01), while the significant correlation coefficients between the effective doses ranged between 0.88 and 1.00. As for the Bland-Altman analysis, both Niklason and Boetticher algorithms strongly supported the absence of statistical significance between the estimated effective doses. This portrays that the occupational doses received by the interventional radiology staff during FGIs fall within the acceptable limit regardless of the varied algorithms applied. In short, the Niklason and Boetticher algorithms appeared to be the more interchangeable ones for effective evaluation of doses. The calibration of low energy X-ray experimental setup with strongly filtered beam dedicated to radiobiological research was performed using the absorbed dose calculated from the data collected by two types detectors. For this purpose a semiconductor (Amptek, USA) and a thermoluminescent (Institute of Nuclear Physics, Krakow, Poland) detectors were applied. Many dosimetric applications and especially those involved in clinical dosimetry are hampered by the supralinearity of TLD-100 which begins at a level of dose of 1 Gy. This research investigates the effect of optical excitation following irradiation on the dose-response. It is expected that this will lead to a more linear dose-response, however, irrespective of the hoped-for linearity, the theoretical/kinetic simulations of the effect of optical excitation will further enhance our understanding of the thermoluminescence mechanisms, especially the role of spatially correlated trapping and luminescent centers. In this work, the initial results of the type testing of the LiF:Mg,Cu,P (TLD-100H) whole-body personal dosemeters are presented. An assessment of reproducibility, linearity of the response, the residual signal as a function of the dose, energy and angular dependence of the response was performed. In general, the dosemeters show good reproducibility for different dose values and a linear behaviour for a range between 0.1 and 300 mSv. The detection limits obtained are lower than 50 μSv. CaSO4:Dy is a reliable high-sensitive themoluminescent phosphor useful for low-level and high-level radiation measurements as it exhibits fading free linear dose response with a single glow peak at ~230°C in these dose regions. For large-scale radiation protection dosimetry service, it is embedded in Teflon matrix with varying thicknesses. Extensive studies have been carried out with such CaSO4:Dy Teflon discs in individual and environmental radiation monitoring applications including its capability to measure International Commission on Radiation Units and Measurements operational quantities. The review highlights their development and application in high-energy photon measurements, thin wafers and graphite-loaded Teflon discs for beta-dosimetry, phosphor-filled aluminium discs for high-dose applications, 6LiF-mixed CaSO4:Dy Teflon discs for thermal and albedo or moderated fast neutrons, sulphur-mixed CaSO4:Dy pellets for fast-neutron exposure even in the presence of gamma-rays and polyethylene-mixed CaSO4:Dy discs for fast neutrons.

The results of nuclear heating measured by means of thermoluminescent dosemeters (TLD-LiF) in a Cu block irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons are presented. The integral Cu experiment relevant for verification of copper nuclear data at neutron energies characteristic for fusion facilities was performed in the ENEA FNG Laboratory at Frascati. Five types of TLDs were used: highly photon sensitive LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-N), 7LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-7) and standard, lower sensitivity LiF:Mg,Ti (MTS-N), 7LiF:Mg,Ti (MTS-7) and 6LiF:Mg,Ti (MTS-6). Calibration of the detectors was performed with gamma rays in terms of air-kerma (10 mGy of 137Cs air-kerma). Nuclear heating in the Cu block was also calculated with the use of MCNP transport code Nuclear heating in Cu and air in TLD's positions was calculated as well. The nuclear heating contribution from all simulated by MCNP6 code particles including protons, deuterons, alphas tritons and heavier ions produced by the neutron interactions were calculated. A trial of the direct comparison between experimental results and results of simulation was performed.

The response of albedo dosemeters depends on the energy and angle of the incident neutron radiation. For their use as personal dosemeters, a field-calibration factor has to be applied. The presently used single sphere method for field calibration can be extended and optimised by putting five albedo dosemeters on the surface of a polyethylene sphere and two TL cards in the centre. To investigate the potential of this extension, reference measurements and Monte Carlo calculations were performed and the fluence response of the detectors at different positions on and within the sphere was determined. Calculated response functions demonstrate that information on the energy and directional distribution of neutron fluence can be extracted with this simple set-up for unknown neutron fields.

High levels of primordial radionuclides have been reported in soils and rocks of São José de Espinharas, in the state of Paraiba, Brazil. These radionuclides are derived from high concentrations of natural uranium and thorium from a mine in the region. Thus, there is a need for a dosimetric evaluation in the area near the mine and the surrounding cities. In this study, the annual effective dose was analyzed in 178 points of five cities. The measurements were performed using thermoluminescent dosimetry with LiF:Mg, Ti (TLD-100). The annual effective dose from environmental exposure varied from 0.71 to 2.07 mSv, with an arithmetic mean of 0.99 mSv. This average is more than twice the estimated value for indoor environments adopted by the UNSCEAR, which is 0.41 mSv. These results will allow establishing reference values for background radiation of the region and criteria to infer a stochastic risk for the local population.

Radiation dose monitoring for radiography students during clinical training is necessary to demonstrate the extent of radiation protection issues present, as well as to instill in them an awareness of safe practices that they will carry with them throughout their careers. The study assess the radiation dose incurred by the undergraduate during clinical training. 312 students were monitored using (thermoluminescence dosimetry) between 2009 and 2015. The results establish that the radiation dose received by the students is well below the dose recommended by national and international authorities. Findings indicate that the dose did not reach the value of 1 mSv, which indicate that current radiation protection measures are acceptable and there was no risk of overexposure, as well as reinforces the importance of nuturing a culture of radiation protection and provides evidence to students that their future as professionals will be a safe one.

To estimate the beta- and gamma-ray doses in a brick sample taken from Odaka, Minami-Soma City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, a Monte Carlo calculation was performed with Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) code. The calculated results were compared with data obtained by single-grain retrospective luminescence dosimetry of quartz inclusions in the brick sample. The calculated result agreed well with the measured data. The dose increase measured at the brick surface was explained by the beta-ray contribution, and the slight slope in the dose profile deeper in the brick was due to the gamma-ray contribution. The skin dose was estimated from the calculated result as 164 mGy over 3 years at the sampling site.

The literature describing the experimental investigations of possible dose-rate effects in the thermoluminescence (TL) of LiF:Mg,Ti (Harshaw) is reviewed. The total lack of glow curve analysis, coupled with inclusion of all or part of the high temperature TL and absence of parallel measurements of possible dose-rate effects in the irradiation stage severely limit the scientific and technical level of the experiments. In addition, the experimental procedures are far from sufficient to warrant any conclusion concerning the presence or absence of dose-rate effects in the TL of LiF:Mg,Ti. This decision is contrary to the widely held belief that there are no dose-rate effects in the TL of LiF:Mg,Ti. In addition, the literature on dose-rate effects in the optical absorption (irradiation stage) of LiF is reviewed and is found contradictory. No dose-rate studies have been carried out on optical absorption in LiF:Mg,Ti. Kinetic simulations demonstrating the possibility, even likelihood, of dose-rate effects are also reviewed. Dose-rate effects are shown to be likely due to competition between excitation and recombination in the irradiation stage. Some other possible mechanisms involving multiple charge carrier trapping are suggested. Further definitive experiments are sorely needed, but the interested researcher should beware, it is not an easy task.

As the ionizing radiation to which workers are exposed is related to possible harmful biological effect, its dose evaluation gains relevance. Although the effects of low doses are still controversial, the radiation protection authorities assume that any dose of ionizing radiation is potentially harmful to the human health and adopt the linear non-threshold model for the dose-effect relation. The Dosimetry Laboratory of the Institute of Physics of the University of São Paulo performs the external individual monitoring of workers exposed to X- and gamma-rays since 1981, with the technique of thermoluminescence. Currently, ~500 badges are provided to the university professionals mostly working in research laboratories and hospitals. Liquid scintillation counting (LSC) is a measuring technique, broadly applied in environmental monitoring of radionuclides. One of the possible applications of LSC is the measurement of radon and thoron decay products. But this method is suitable only for grab sampling. For long-term measurements a different technique can be applied-monitors of potential alpha energy concentration (PAEC) with thermoluminescent detectors (TLD). In these devices, called Alfa-2000 sampling probe, TL detectors (CaSO4:Dy) are applied for alpha particles counting. Three independent heads are placed over the membrane filter in a dust sampler's microcyclone. Such solution enables simultaneous measurements of PAEC and dust content. Moreover, the information which is stored in TLD chips is the energy of alpha particles, not the number of counted particles. Therefore, the readout of TL detector shows directly potential alpha energy, with no dependence on equilibrium factor, etc. This technique, which had been used only for radon decay products measurements, was modified by author to allow simultaneous measurements of radon and thoron PAEC. The LSC method can be used for calibration of portable radon decay products monitors. Several measurements have been performed on the cosmic radiation field from the surface of the Earth up to the maximum altitudes of research aeroplanes. However, there is only limited information about that between 15 and 30 km altitudes. In order to study the radiation environment in the stratosphere, an experiment was built by students from Hungarian universities that flew on board the BEXUS (Balloon Experiments for University Students) stratospheric balloon in Northern Sweden, from the ESRANGE Space Center. The main technical goals of the experiment were to test at the first time the TRITEL 3D silicon detector telescope system in close to space conditions and to develop a balloon technology platform for advanced cosmic radiation and dosimetric measurements. The main scientific goals were to give an assessment of the cosmic radiation field at the altitude of the BEXUS balloons, to use the TRITEL system to determine dosimetric and radiation quantities during the balloon flight and to intercompare the TRITEL and Pille results to provide a correction factor for the Pille measurements. To fulfil the scientific and technological objectives, several different dosimeter systems were included in the experiment: an advanced version of the TRITEL silicon detector telescope, Geiger-Müller (GM) counters and Pille thermoluminescent dosimeters. The float altitude of the BEXUS balloon was ∼28.6 km; the total flight time was ∼4 h. Measurement data from the active instruments were received in real time by the ground team during the mission. There were no failures in the operation of the system; everything worked as expected. This article presents the scientific goals and results in detail. From the TRITEL measurements, the linear energy transfer spectra, the average quality factor of the cosmic radiation as well as the absorbed dose and the dose equivalent were determined. Estimations for the uncertainty in the TRITEL measurements were given. The deposited energy spectra measured with the TRITEL instrument were compared with the count rates measured with the GM counters. The experiences and results gained in the frame of the project will be used in the evaluation of TRITEL data from measurements on board the International Space Station. The reader will time-travel through almost seven decades of kinetic models and mathematical simulations of thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics based on the band-gap theory of the solid state. From post-World-War II, ideas concerning electron trapping mechanisms to the highly idealised one trap-one recombination (OTOR) model first elaborated in 1956 but still in 'high gear' today. The review caresses but purposely avoids in-depth discussion of the endless stream of papers discussing the intricacies of glow peak shapes arising from first-order, second-order, mixed-order and general-order kinetics predominantly based on non-interacting systems, and then on to the more physically realistic scenarios that have attempted to analyse complex systems involving ever greater numbers of interacting trapping centres, luminescent centres and non-luminescent centres. The review emphasises the difficulty the band-gap models have in the simulation of dose response linear/supralinear behaviour and especially the dependence of the supralinearity on ionisation density. The significance of the non-observation of filling-rate supralinearity in the absorption stage is emphasised since it removes from consideration the possibility of TL supralinearity arising from irradiation stage supralinearity. The importance of the simultaneous action of both localised and delocalised transitions has gradually penetrated the mindset of the community of kinetic researchers, but most simulations have concentrated on the shape of glow peaks and the extraction of the glow peak parameters, E (the thermal activation energy) and s (the attempt-to-escape frequency). The simulation of linear/supralinear dose response and its dependence on ionisation density have been largely avoided until recently due to the fundamental schism between the effects of ionisation density and some basic assumptions of the band-gap model. The review finishes with an in-depth presentation and discussion of the most recent nanoscopic-localised/delocalised kinetic model that promotes an ice-breaking solution to bridge the schism., (© The Author 2015. Several table vitamins, minerals and L-lysine amino acid have been preliminarily tested as potential emergency dosemeters using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. Radiation-induced EPR signals were detected in samples of vitamin B2 and L-lysine while samples of multivitamins of different brands as well as mineral Mg demonstrated prominent OSL signals after exposure to ionizing radiation doses. Basic dosimetric properties of the radiation-sensitive substances were studied, namely dose response, fading of the EPR or OSL signals and values of minimum measurable doses (MMDs). For EPR-sensitive samples, the EPR signal is converted into units of dose using a linear dose response and correcting for fading using the measured fading dependence. For OSL-sensitive materials, a multi-aliquot, enhanced-temperature protocol was developed to avoid the problem of sample sensitization and to minimize the influence of signal fading. The sample dose in this case is also evaluated using the dose response and fading curves. MMDs of the EPR-sensitive samples were below 2 Gy while those of the OSL-sensitive materials were below 500 mGy as long as the samples are analyzed within 1 week after exposure., (© The Author 2016. The influence of pre- and post-irradiation annealing procedures on LiF:Mg,Cu,P (trade name MCP-N) thermoluminescent detector stability was investigated. The detectors were processed in four groups, undergoing complete or incomplete preparation cycles (containing pre- and/or post-irradiation annealing in various combinations). Each cycle was repeated 10 times. The decrease in the stability was observed in groups with pre-irradiation annealing procedure, and not observed in other groups that were found to be apparently stable. The influence of the thermal history on the properties of the detectors was also investigated by swapping the chosen groups of detectors with respect to the annealing cycles. Changes in the properties of the detectors were observed after next 10 cycles of measurements too. Exponential model was proposed to describe the trends observed at two parts of the experiment. In this article, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) data are presented from integrated circuits (ICs) extracted from mobile phones. The purpose is to evaluate the potential of using OSL from components in personal electronic devices such as smart phones as a means of emergency dosimetry in the event of a large-scale radiological incident. ICs were extracted from five different makes and models of mobile phone. Sample preparation procedures are described, and OSL from the IC samples following irradiation using a (90)Sr/(90)Y source is presented. Repeatability, sensitivity, dose responses, minimum measureable doses, stability and fading data were examined and are described. A protocol for measuring absorbed dose is presented, and it was concluded that OSL from these components is a viable method for assessing dose in the days following a radiological incident., (© The Author 2015. Since the publication of International Commission on Radiological Protection statement in 2011 on tissue reaction, eye lens radiation protection played an important role in exposed personnel dosimetry. For this reason, the Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) Individual Monitoring Service decided to study a prototype to fulfil specific requests (e.g. for survey in interventional department and intercomparisons). On the basis of such preliminary investigation, a new eye lens dosemeter was developed. The new dosemeter, named EDEL (ENEA Dosemeter for Eye Lens), was characterised in terms of Hp(3), the operational quantity related to eye lens monitoring. The investigation was performed experimentally and optimised using the Monte Carlo MCNP6 code. The new prototype was thought to fulfil two main requests: the reliability of the dosimetric data and the portability of the dosemeter itself. Thermoluminescence dosemeters are widely used in individual and environmental monitoring. The aim of this work was to compare the thermal stability of dosemeters of the Ext-Rad and whole-body card types with LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P detectors stored at different temperatures and periods. The dosemeters were stored at 0°C, room temperature and 40°C for periods that lasted 8, 30, 45, 90 and 120 d. In general, TLD-100H detectors present higher TL signal stability than TLD-100 detectors. The intensity of the signal remained constant for both materials for storage periods at 0°C. At RT the same results was observed for TLD-100H. For TLD-100 detectors, a maximum variation of 22 % was registered for the longest period. At 40°C the TL signal decreased with storage time for both detectors. The TL signal of TLD-100H detectors presented maximum variations of 12 % whereas for TLD-100 detectors, larger variations of 25 % were observed., (© The Author 2015. The personal dosimetry service at the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission uses Harshaw 8814 cards with LiF:Mg,Ti detectors. The dosemeters are read in a Harshaw 6600 TLD reader. In the process of accreditation for the ISO 17025 standard((1)), different influence factors are investigated and the uncertainty has been determined. The Individual Monitoring Service Laboratory-LAEC reads the dosemeters once it receives them from the customer, and new cards are immediately given for the next wearing period. The wearing period is 2 months. The dosemeter results are reported to the customers without background subtraction. Both Hp(10) and Hp(0.07) are reported. For this paper, only the uncertainty on Hp(10) will be focussed. The following factors are taken into account for the uncertainty: calibration factor, dosemeter homogeneity and repeatability, energy and angular dependence, non-linearity, temperature dependence, etc. Also the detection limit was determined. One of the important factors is the correction for fading. This fading correction depends on the procedure used such as storage temperatures, the time-temperature profile of the read-out, pre-heat and annealing conditions. Pre- and post-irradiation fading curves were measured for a storage period up to 182 d at room temperature (15-25°C). The Brazilian Instituto de Radioproteção e Dosimetria (IRD) runs a neutron individual monitoring system with a home-made TLD albedo dosemeter. It has already been characterised and calibrated in some reference fields. However, the complete energy response of this dosemeter is not known, and the calibration factors for all monitored workplace neutron fields are difficult to be obtained experimentally. Therefore, to overcome such difficulties, Monte Carlo simulations have been used. This paper describes the simulation of the HP(10) neutron response of the IRD TLD albedo dosemeter using the MCNPX transport code, for energies from thermal to 20 MeV. The validation of the MCNPX modelling is done comparing the simulated results with the experimental measurements for ISO standard neutron fields of (241)Am-Be, (252)Cf, (241)Am-B and (252)Cf(D2O) and also for (241)Am-Be source moderated with paraffin and silicone. As workers in interventional radiology belong to one of the most occupationally exposed groups, methods for sufficiently accurate quantification of their external exposure are sought. The objective of the authors' experiment was to investigate the relations between eye lens dose and Hp(10), Hp(3) or Hp(0.07) values measured with a conventional whole-body personal thermoluminescence dosemeter (TLD). Conditions of occupational exposure during common interventional procedures were simulated in laboratory. An anthropomorphic phantom represented a physician. The TLDs were fixed to the phantom in different locations that are common for purposes of personal dosimetry. In order to monitor the dose at the eye lens level during the exposures, a special thermoluminescence eye dosemeter was fixed to the phantom's temple. Correlations between doses measured with the whole-body and the eye dosemeters were found. There are indications that personnel in interventional radiology do not need to be unconditionally equipped with additional eye dosemeters, especially if an appropriate whole-body dosimetry system has been already put into practice., (© The Author 2015.
