A case of acrokeratoelastoidosis (AKE) is reported. A review of the literature has established that at least three clinicopathological entities have been reported under this term. Two of the entities show a combination of hyperkeratosis with fragmentation of dermal elastic tissue, which justifies the designation AKE. The first, for which the term familial AKE is perhaps appropriate, though many cases have been sporadic, begins in childhood or early adult life, and there is no evidence that trauma or light exposure are factors in its production. The second is a more variable clinical syndrome occurring in middle or late adult life, and both physical trauma and light exposure appear to be concerned in its induction. The third syndrome to be reported under the designation AKE shows no abnormality of elastic tissue and appears to be a separate entity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article traces the pathological history of keratoacanthoma, a kind of tumor. According to the author, the lesion had long been recognized by surgeons and by dermatologists, and occasional case reports can be found in the proceedings of nineteenth century clinical meetings. However, the diagnostic label, if there was one, attached to such reports was commonly atypical or self-limiting epithelioma. Past researchers have not defined the clinical and histological features, which differentiate the keratoacanthoma from a squamous epithelioma, convincingly.

The article presents information on the state of dermatological setting in Great Britain during the late nineteenth century. During this period, the skin hospitals in various cities of Great Britain provided service to patients and a training ground for future dermatologists. The country entered the eighties with a small group of individuals of very varied training and experience more or less committed to the study and practice of dermatology. Contributions on dermatological topics were not uncommon in the general medical societies and the general journals, but the need for a specialized journal was becoming increasingly urgent as the specialty expanded.

The article reports on the establishment of dermatological hospitals in London, England, in order to meet the rising demands of the ever rising population of London. In response to this urgent need general dispensaries were established in London and in other large cities from 1770 onwards. Such dispensaries were in effect general medical and surgical outpatient clinics, subsidized by private charity. Many provided home visits for patients too ill to come to the dispensary. Some of them attracted medical staff of high caliber. Dermatology as a specialty did not exist, but surgeons in their routine courses often devoted several lectures to diseases of the skin.

During a two-year period 40 infections with T. discoides and 37 infections with T. mentagrophytes were encountered in the Cambridge area. T. discoides infections were most prevalent in the winter months but T. mentagrophytes infections showed no seasonal incidence. T. discoides infections were usually contracted from cattle; in T. mentagrophytes infections various animal hosts were suspected, but the source was often difficult to trace. Both infections were common in children under puberty ; males were more often affected than females at all ages. T. discoides occurred particularly during the first 20 years of working life and was uncommon over the age of 40 ; the age incidence of T. mentagrophytes infections after puberty was more evenly distributed. The article provides information the history of dermatological journals in Great Britain. The first medical periodicals were published in the seventeenth century and were adaptations of contemporary news-sheets, ephemeral and of limited circulation, designed to serve political or personal rather than scientific ends. The earliest known to have been published in Britain was "Medidna Curiosa," in 1684. The transactions of learned societies and the general medical journals published from their earliest days many papers on dermatology and what are now other specialties. The "Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Diseases of the Skin, A Quarterly Record of Dermatological Science," was published by John Churchill and Sons, of London. For about 20 years after the failure of the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine there was no journal of dermatology in Britain. The "British Journal of Dermatology," which was in its first decade, came as a specialist periodical of that time.

Disturbances of hair growth and pigmentation induced by chemical agents are more familiar to the veterinary surgeon than to the dermatologist, but are becoming increasingly common in medical practice. The chemicals found to influence hair growth in man are discussed and their possible mode of action is described. The anticoagulant drugs and the anti-mitotic agents prescribed in neoplastic disease account for most cases of chemical alopecia but many other substances are of actual or potential importance. The chemicals inducing changes in hair colour are briefly discussed. A case of proved cutaneous cryptococcosis in an Englishman with no evidence of pulmonary or cerebral infection is reported. The abscess healed after incision without further treatment, and the man remains well after five years. Three cases of plant dermatitis are reported, in which the patients were shown to react to only one or a limited number of the horticultural varieties they handled. the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are described and a short account is given of some of the plants concerned. Others likely to manifest this phenomenon are mentioned. The significance of variety-specific dermatitis is discussed and its practical importance for the patient and the dermatologist is emphasized. The article presents a discussion on autosensitization to skin. It can be defined as a form of autointoxication derived from changes in the patient's own tissues. The term has found fame and fortune in the thought and writings of dermatologists, and is quite regularly applied as a diagnostic label to the sudden dissemination often without obvious provocation of a primarily circumscribed eczema. This article reports that the inaugural meeting of the Eastern Counties Dermatological Society was held on November 18, 1961, in Cambridge. Physician Peter Lachmann read a short paper entitled "The Significance of the L.E. Phenomenon." One case of a boy aged 13, who developed follicular mucinosis, was discussed in the meeting. On examination there was an eruption of light reddish-brown, somewhat gelatinous papules in the central area of the face. They were uniformly about 2 mm in diameter, discrete, but becoming confluent in irregular infiltrated plaques.

The article focuses on the clinical importance of weathering in human hair. The clinical importance of weathering has been greatly increased by the recent popularity of wearing the hair long. With the scanning electron microscope it has been shown that apparently normal hair shafts show a progressive loss of cuticular scale pattern from root to tip. In man it is difficult to differentiate the effect of weathering alone from the combined effect of weathering and trauma inflicted for cosmetic purposes, since even the more uncouth seldom refrain completely from the use of a brush and comb.

This article presents a study of racial and other genetic variations in hair form. Racial differences in hair form are so conspicuous that in the early stages of scientific anthropology most methods of classification depended on hair as the primary race characteristic. Other variables also were examined but no satisfactory method was devised of recording the essential differences in hair form in such a way that they could be subjected to meaningful statistical analysis. A statistical analysis of the data supported the assumption that hair form is a polygenic trait and allowed the interesting conclusion that 'the range of genes in the population pool is limited.

The article evaluates the thesis titled, "Delusions of Infestation," submitted by Annika Skott, of the University of Göteborg, Sweden. The thesis reports a research project on parasitophobia, carried out at Saint Jörgen Hospital, Göteborg. Under the project, fifty-seven patients met the strict diagnostic criteria, which were imposed upon them. Forty-six of these patients were available for physical and psychiatric clinical assessment. Physical illness, significant in some individuals, was not the sole cause, nor the most important causative factor. Parasitophobia is a symptom of complex and variable origins.

It describes the classic face lift operation and ways to trace the development of aesthetic facial surgery down the ages. The first three chapters are entitled "Historic Aspects," "Beauty Business and Civilization" and "Beauty Business and Skin Care." The last 5 of the 10 chapters give a clear account, effectively illustrated by line drawings, of the operative technique.
