Health care utilization for 4,256 randomly selected elderly decedents was analyzed in the 4 years leading up to death, using data from Manitoba's universal health care plan files. Usage of hospital beds by nursing home residents declined with age, and was much lower than for decedents who lived in the community. Rates of surgery were lower for the nursing home residents. Universally insured medical and hospital services provided the opportunity to trace the health care utilized by a large probability sample of elderly residents of Manitoba, Canada. The findings suggest that most elderly are healthy and that they are low, infrequent users of services. A minority were identified who are very high users of health care. This paper compares the health care used by employed and retired elderly persons. The analysis is based on data representative of an entire Canadian province's elderly population drawn from interviews and claims accumulated under the public medical and hospital services program. The findings indicate that (a) ambulatory physician visitation of both groups is similar, and (b) the greater prevalence of serious conditions among the retired is associated with their higher hospitalization rates rather than with their retirement status. The Manitoba Longitudinal Study on Aging (MLSA) includes a representative sample (n = 4709) of the residents of Manitoba and combines their responses to a needs assessment interview with complete information on mortality and use of health services (medical, hospital and long-term care) for the years 1970 through 1977 to form a longitudinal record for each participant. The article presents a study which analyzes the use of old surveys for designing longitudinal studies, building data banks and estimating bias. The study is based upon a 1956 research study of Ankara University Political Science Faculty graduates. That research focused on course preference, feelings toward the program offered at the Political Science Faculty, and job satisfaction. The questions included in the research were all included in the study conducted by the author. Moreover, the items designed to get at the socialization, values, and occupational mobility of the graduates were also incorporated.

The article presents a research examining gestational age at birth and neonatal jaundice readmission. It mentions that gestational age was obtained from the maternal delivery record and based on menstrual dates or second-trimester ultrasound. It also mentions that gestational age was entered as an interaction with short stay in the regression model, but the interaction was not significant each was entered independently into the final model.
