Recently, various state-space implementations of surplus production models (SPMs) have been developed for data-limited stocks. Often, catches and fishing effort are underestimated and discards are ignored. This results in biased estimates of stock status and reference points. Therefore, we conduct a sensitivity analysis for different under-reporting scenarios (due to non-declared landings, by-catch, and discards) on model estimates and thus advice for the black hake species in northwest Africa. Two modelling frameworks were used, namely a stochastic SPM in continuous time (SPiCT) and Just Another Bayesian Biomass Assessment (JABBA). A common set of diagnostics was developed to allow comparison across modelling frameworks. Scenarios correspond to hypotheses about misreporting and assumptions and priors that were kept consistent. The ratio of current fishing mortality over the fishing pressure that gives the maximum sustainable yield, F/FMSY , is most affected by under-reporting. Results are sensitive to the prior assumed for the initial depletion level, B0/K , and research is needed. If the misreporting is changing over time, relative quantities (e.g. F/FMSY) and trends are biased, while if misreporting (or at least a part of misreporting) is constant, relative quantities are unbiased. Background Despite widespread vaccination, pertussis has re-emerged as a serious public health concern worldwide. Since 2017, Peru has experienced an increase in pertussis cases exhibiting a higher risk of severity and death in young infants. Thus, a dose of the tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is recommended for pregnant women in the third trimester. Although evidence suggests the maternal Tdap vaccine is safe and effective, its association with a reduced risk of pertussis in developing countries remains poorly investigated. Methods We conducted a case-control study to evaluate the association between Tdap vaccination during pregnancy and reduction in the risk of pertussis among infants aged <2 months in Peru. Pertussis cases and controls treated in healthcare facilities nationwide between 2019 and 2021 and confirmed by real-time polymerase chain reaction were included. The controls were randomly selected from test-negative patients. Odds ratios (ORs) and vaccine effectiveness (VE) were calculated using a multiple logistic regression model and 1 − (OR) × 100%, respectively. Results Fifty cases and 150 controls were included in the analysis. The mothers of 4% of cases and 16.7% of controls received Tdap vaccination during pregnancy, resulting in an OR of 0.19 (95% confidence interval [CI],.04–.86) and VE of 81% (95% CI, 14%–96%) for preventing pertussis in infants. Conclusions Peruvian infants <2 months old whose mothers received the Tdap vaccine in the third trimester of pregnancy had a significantly lower risk of pertussis. We performed an observational cohort study to assess associations between genetic factors of dengue fever (DF) severity in children in the Dominican Republic. A total of 488 participants had serologically confirmed DF. Background and aims Crohn's disease [CD] can develop penetrating complications at any time during the disease course. Enterocutaneous fistulae [ECF] are disease-related complications with an important impact on quality of life. Our aim was to describe the outcomes of this complication, including its medical and/or surgical management and their temporal trends. The primary endpoint was fistula closure, defined as the absence of drainage, with no new abscess or surgery, over the preceding 6 months. Methods Clinical information from all adult patients with CD and at least one ECF—excluding perianal fistulae—were identified from the prospectively-maintained ENEIDA registry. All additional information regarding treatment for this complication was retrospectively reviewed. Results A total of 301 ECF in 286 patients [January 1970-September 2020] were analysed out of 30 088 records. These lesions were mostly located in the ileum [67%] and they had a median of one external opening [range 1-10]. After a median follow-up of 146 months (interquartile range [IQR], 69-233), 69% of patients underwent surgery. Fistula closure was achieved in 84%, mostly after surgery, and fistula recurrence was uncommon [13%]. Spontaneous and low-output fistulae were associated with higher closure rates (hazard ratio [HR] 1.51, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.17-1.93, p  = 0.001, and HR 1.49, 95% CI 1.07-2.06, p  = 0.03, respectively); this was obtained more frequently with medical therapy since biologics have been available. Conclusions ECF complicating CD are rare but entail a high burden of medical and surgical resources. Closure rates are high, usually after surgery, and fistula recurrence is uncommon. Background This study analysed the distribution of lung cancer deaths in areas with different urbanization levels in the Madrid Region and whether such differences persisted when deprivation and air pollution were considered. Methods This was a population-based cross-sectional study covering lung cancer deaths (2001 -07). The exposure indicators were: a deprivation index based on 2001 census data; and the daily mean NO2 measurement (2002-07), both at the census tract level. Analysis was stratified by sex and age group and the Poisson regression models were applied to obtain rate ratios (RRs). Results After adjustment for age, deprivation index and NO2, mortality was similar in the city and Greater Madrid areas and lower in the rural area fortheover-64age group (RR: 0.84 in men and RR: 0.66 in women, with respectto the city of Madrid), and significantly lower in the Greater Madrid area (RR: 0.84 in men and RR: 0.74 in women) and in the rural area (RR: 0.73 in men and RR: 0.51 in women) with respect to the city of Madrid for the under-65 age group. Objectives: To establish a genetic and clinical diagnosis in a newborn with fetal-onset dilated cardiomyopathy using next-generation sequencing technologies.Methods: We have conducted the clinical evaluation of the proband and the molecular characterization of his disease by means of whole-exome sequencing. In addition, the clinical evaluation and subsequent genetic screening of five relatives has been performed. This comprises two males with features of left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy, two females suspected of being carriers, and one pregnant female at risk of being a carrier and thereby transmitting the disease to her child.Results: We have discovered a novel variant in the TAZ gene by means of whole-exome sequencing. This, together with the performance of further clinical analyses, led to an early diagnosis of Barth syndrome in the proband. The genetic screening of the subject's familial group revealed full cosegregation of the variant with another two affected males and identified several female carriers.Conclusions: The investigation for Barth syndrome must be considered in male babies and young boys with dilated cardiomyopathy and left ventricular noncompaction. Next-generation sequencing technologies provide an accurate and rapid diagnostic tool in prospectively and retrospectively identifying individuals with this Mendelian syndrome. ABSTRACT Introduction. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are antidepressants that cause sexual dysfunction. The SSRI fluoxetine (FLX) appears to particularly affect the ejaculatory response. Ejaculation is regulated both at brain and spinal levels. Aim. To study the acute and chronic effects of FLX on male rat copulatory behavior, trying to distinguish between brain and spinal cord FLX-induced changes on the ejaculatory response. Methods. Sexually experienced male rats were intraperitoneally injected with 5 or 10 mg/kg FLX and tested for sexual behavior during 60 minutes on days 1, 7, and 14 of treatment. After a 2-day drug holiday, the males chronically treated with the high FLX dose were spinalized to record spontaneous and mechanically evoked genital motor patterns of ejaculation (GMPEs). In addition, independent groups were used to evaluate the acute effects of 1, 3, or 10 µg/rat FLX (intravenously) on the GMPE. Main Outcome Measures. Number of ejaculatory series and their parameters; electromyographic recordings of the GMPE in the bulbospongiosus muscles and their parameters. Results. Acute FLX injection slightly affected sexual behavior display and dose-dependently inhibited the expression of the GMPE. Chronic FLX treatment did not inhibit copulation but produced deficits in the parameters related to ejaculation after the high dose. In these animals, the response capacity of the spinal generator of ejaculation (SGE) as well as the number of discharges in the GMPE was decreased as a result of chronic FLX treatment. Conclusions. Chronic FLX treatment produces inhibitory effects on male rat copulation, particularly on ejaculation, some of which are exerted directly at the SGE. The exogenous addition of salicylic acid (SA) was previously shown to inhibit indeterminate but not determinate-type nodulation. We sought to extend these results by modulating endogenous levels of SA through the transgenic expression of salicylate hydroxylase (NahG) in both stably transformed Lotus japonicus and composite Medicago truncatula plants. NahG expression in L. japonicus resulted in a marked reduction of SA levels. This reduction correlated with an increase in the number of infections and mean nodule number when compared to controls. However, a complicating factor was that NahG-expressing plants had greater root growth. Spot inoculations of NahG-expressing L. japonicus plants confirmed increased nodulation in these plants. Consistent with the reported inhibitory effects of exogenous SA on indeterminate-type nodulation, NahG expression in M. truncatula plants led to enhanced nodulation and infection. These data point to an important role for SA-mediated plant defense pathways in controlling nodule formation on both determinate and indeterminate nodule-forming hosts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil acidification is one of the environmental factors that more strongly hampers the establishment of an effective symbiotic interaction between rhizobia and leguminous plants. Sinorhizobium meliloti and the acid-tolerant Rhizobium sp. strain LPU83 are able to nodulate alfalfa plants at pH 5.6 but both exhibit a delayed nodulation and a reduction in the number of elicited nodules. We show here that the addition of calcium (Ca) has no positive effect on the nodulation kinetics shown by LPU83 at low pH, but does retrieve the competition capacity of S. meliloti strains in acidic media, likely by improving the ability of these bacteria to attach to plant roots. In contrast, the attachment of the acid-tolerant strain LPU83 to alfalfa roots is not greatly affected by pH or Ca concentration. Media acidification impairs nod gene induction in different S. meliloti strains but not in LPU83. However, the addition of Ca at low pH does not affect neither nod gene expression in alfalfa-nodulating rhizobia (S. meliloti or strain LPU83) nor the quality of nod gene inducers exudated by alfalfa plants, in contrast to what has been reported previously. These data reveal differential features among alfalfa-nodulating rhizobia and point out the adsorption of S. meliloti to alfalfa roots as the major limiting step affecting its symbiotic performance in acidic conditions.
