A new experiment, called the NEutrino Oscillation at Short baseline (NEOS), is proposed on the site of Hanbit Reactors at Yonggwang, South Korea, to investigate a reactor antineutrino anomaly. The homogeneous NEOS detector having a 1000-l target volume was constructed and deployed at the tendon gallery 25 m away from the reactor core. The NEOS detector employs a linear alkylbenzene (LAB) based gadolinium loaded liquid scintillator with 10 % di-isopropylnaphthalene (DIN) based liquid scintillator to improve the particle identification via pulse shape discrimination. This paper investigated the assimilation of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in Saccharina latissima in proximity to salmon cages in coastal waters. The bioassays were performed on plants from three stations located in the vicinity of a salmon farm ( Salmo salar) in exposed waters at Tristein (63° 52′ N, 9° 37′ E) in Central Norway. The growth, the C and N content, and the nitrogen isotope ratios (δN) of S. latissima were monitored over 1 year. The DIN concentrations in seawater were higher at the salmon farm stations than at the reference station during the winter, and the N/P ratio at the salmon farm stations was higher from September to January and in June. S. latissima at the salmon farm stations grew faster than at the reference station. The length of S. latissima increased by 50 % when integrated with the salmon farm compared to the reference station. The N content of S. latissima was positively correlated to the DIN concentration in seawater ( p < 0.05), but the increased N supply from salmon did not result in N accumulation in S. latissima at the salmon farm station because of the dilution by a higher growth rate. The δN in S. latissima was higher at the salmon farm station from April to June and changed in the direction of the δN signature in urine. This indicated that N in S. latissima at the salmon farm station partly originated from the salmon. One hectare of S. latissima may absorb 0.8∼1.2 t N during one growth season. Large-scale cultivation of S. latissima should be considered to mitigate the environmental effects of DIN wastes from salmon farms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the aquaculture of spiny lobsters has been expanding since the 1970s, very little is known about the potential environmental impacts on water quality of this activity. This study quantified the production of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) from Australasian red spiny lobsters, Jasus edwardsii, in the laboratory, and these data were then used in a numerical model to predict the dispersal pattern of DIN from a hypothetical commercial spiny lobster farm for a coastal site where such a farm would typically be located. Modelling scenarios were set up with combinations of two different stocking densities (3 and 5 kg m), two different diets (mussels and moist artificial diet) and three different feed conversion ratios (FCR = 3, 5 and 28). DIN excretion rate from unfed lobsters in the laboratory on average was 1.10 ± 0.12 μg N g h while feeding lobsters on mussels and artificial diet increased DIN excretion significantly by around eightfold and twofold, respectively. Ammonia was consistently the dominant contributor to measured DIN output from lobsters. Modelling results indicated that the mean elevated DIN from a hypothetical farm where the lobsters were fed with mussels ranged from 7 up to 20 μg N L with increasing stocking density and FCR and was 30-150 % higher than the mean elevated DIN resulting from lobsters fed with artificial diet. Overall, the results indicated that DIN output from the hypothetical spiny lobster sea-cage farming is unlikely to be problematic using the FCR, stocking density, and the number of cages modelled at the coastal site in this study. Precipitation and streamwater samples were collected from 16 November 1999 to 17 November 2000 in two watersheds at Acadia National Park, Maine, and analyzed for mercury (Hg) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN, nitrate plus ammonium). Cadillac Brook watershed burned in a 1947 fire that destroyed vegetation and soil organic matter. We hypothesized that Hg deposition would be higher at Hadlock Brook (the reference watershed, 10.2 μg/m2/year) than Cadillac (9.4 μg/m2/year) because of the greater scavenging efficiency of the softwood vegetation in Hadlock. We also hypothesized the Hg and DIN export from Cadillac Brook would be lower than Hadlock Brook because of elemental volatilization during the fire, along with subsequently lower rates of atmospheric deposition in a watershed with abundant bare soil and bedrock, and regenerating vegetation. Consistent with these hypotheses, Hg export was lower from Cadillac Brook watershed (0.4 μg/m2/year) than from Hadlock Brook watershed (1.3 μg/m2/year). DIN export from Cadillac Brook (11.5 eq/ha/year) was lower than Hadlock Brook (92.5 eq/ha/year). These data show that ∼50 years following a wildfire there was lower atmospheric deposition due to changes in forest species composition, lower soil pools, and greater ecosystem retention for both Hg and DIN. The importance of snowmelt and spring rainfall to water and nutrient exports from macro-scale watersheds (>1000 km²) is not well established. Data collected from the Androscoggin River watershed (Maine and New Hampshire) between February 1999 and March 2002 show that the 90-day spring melt period accounted for 39-57% of total annual discharge and is likely driven both by snowpack melting and spring rainfall. While large loads of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) are delivered to the watershed from snowmelt and rain (from 1.16× 106 to 1.61× 106 kg N over the study years), only one third of this N load is exported from the basin during the snowmelt period (0.40× 106-0.48 × 106 kg N). Despite reduced residence time and temperature limitations on biological N retention, there is a poor mass balance between DIN input to the watershed and the nitrogen exported from mouth of the river. Inferences from a geochemical hydrograph separation suggests that approximately 51-63% of the water leaving the mouth of the Androscoggin river is from these 'new' water sources (rain and snowmelt) while 37-49% is from DIN depleted soil and groundwater. Mixing of water from different sources, as well as nutrient retention by dams in the upper watershed, may account for the large discrepancy between DIN inputs and exports from this watershed.
