Background, aim, and scope North American pulp and paper mills are facing tremendous challenges, which may necessitate major mill modernizations. An example is process modification to reduce dependency on purchased power, which is an expensive resource. Such modifications may have environmental implications at the mills' sites, on their product life cycle, and on other interconnected systems, and therefore, systematic tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA) need to be applied. Different LCA system boundary approaches can be used for such process design applications, and these approaches need to be compared to determine their respective benefits and limitations in this context. This study compares setting the system boundary according to a cradle-to-gate approach [attributional LCA (ALCA)] and a system expansion [consequential LCA (CLCA)] approach using a case study, which deals with implementing cogeneration and increased de-inked pulp production at an integrated newsprint mill. Methodology A case study considering various process options to reduce purchased electricity at an integrated newsprint mill is defined. These options include implementing cogeneration and increasing de-inked pulp production. The environmental impacts related to these process options are analyzed using two LCA methodologies. The first one consists in setting the system boundary according to a cradle-to-gate ALCA approach, while the second one uses a differential CLCA approach (system expansion). Comparisons of the two methods are based on different parameters: inclusion/exclusion of the indirect environmental consequences, selected allocation procedures, and effect of using the average versus the marginal technology for power production. Results Both the ALCA approach and the CLCA approach indicate that the process options are beneficial. However, the results show that indirect environmental consequences, which are assessed only with the CLCA approach, can be opposite to direct effects (e.g., the results can indicate an improvement of the direct impacts and a deterioration of the indirect ones). In addition, environmental impacts obtained by modeling the average or the marginal technology may be very different. Using an ALCA approach often necessitates the use of an arbitrary allocation procedure, which can greatly affect the results. On the other hand, ALCA can be used to perform "hot spots" identification, which, at this time, is not possible with CLCA. Discussion The cradle-to-gate boundary approach, which is usually used in the literature for pulp and paper process design applications, may not always be the most appropriate to determine the environmental consequences of implementing different process options. However, at this time, there is no method based on CLCA allowing for "hot spots" identification, and thus, a combined approach may be required for process design. Conclusions It is shown that the choice of the system boundary can significantly affect the results. More specifically, the usage of different allocation procedures in ALCA leads to different interpretation of the results, which does not occur when using the CLCA approach. CLCA provides more complete information for decision making for the cases where most of the consequences occur outside the life cycle of the product investigated. Recommendations and perspectives Research opportunities include developing methodologies to integrate ALCA and CLCA for improved process design applications and mechanisms for reducing uncertainty in CLCA. This work provides a critical overview of the recent trends toward the development of modern, dissolving pulp production technologies that respond to the current challenges and opportunities for the emerging low-carbon bioresource economy. Special attention is paid to recent advancements in prehydrolysis kraft pulping and conversion of paper grade pulp to dissolving pulp, with emphasis on the valorization of hemicellulose to value-added products. A comprehensive analysis of the current and future developmental opportunities for novel bioprocessing technologies and new products from dissolving pulp that aim to improve the process economics and enhance the industry competitiveness is presented and discussed. Habitat change and fragmentation are the primary causes of biodiversity loss worldwide. Recent decades have seen a surge of funding, published papers and citations in the field as these threats to biodiversity continue to rise. However, how research directions and agenda are evolving in this field remains poorly understood. In this study, we examined the current state of research on habitat fragmentation (due to agriculture, logging, fragmentation, urbanisation and roads) pertaining to two of the most threatened vertebrate groups, reptiles and amphibians. We did so by conducting a global scale review of geographical and taxonomical trends on the habitat fragmentation types, associated sampling methods and response variables. Our analyses revealed a number of biases with existing research efforts being focused on three continents (e.g., North America, Europe and Australia) and a surplus of studies measuring species richness and abundance. However, we saw a shift in research agenda towards studies utilising technological advancements including genetic and spatial data analyses. Our findings suggest important associations between sampling methods and prevalent response variables but not with the types of habitat fragmentation. These research agendas are found homogeneously distributed across all continents. Increased research investment with appropriate sampling techniques is crucial in biodiversity hotpots such as the tropics where unprecedented threats to herpetofauna exist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Western cherry fruit fly, Rhagoletis indifferens Curran (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a pest of cherries (Prunus spp.) in western North America that potentially could be managed using the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin (Hypocreales: Cordycipitaceae). Here, the product CX-10282 containing 11.3% B. bassiana strain GHA was evaluated as a potential control agent for adult R. indifferens by determining whether it can cause 100% fly mortality in the laboratory. Low or high label rates of 5.4 × 107 or 1.7 × 108 conidia/ml in five different modes of application and application volumes were tested. When one 1-μl drop of CX-10282 containing 1.6 × 105 conidia was applied onto a single female fly, 100% mortality was reached by 4 or 7 d. When CX-10282 was sprayed into a container with flies to produce 2.2 × 105 to 6.9 × 105 conidia/cm2 and flies left in containers, 76.2–99.5% mortality was reached by 15–21 d. When sprayed flies were moved into clean containers, 74.8% mortality was reached by 25 d. When a 9-cm diam filter paper with 2.8 × 107 conidia/cm2 was exposed to flies inside a container, 100% mortality was reached by 9 d. When flies were exposed to CX-10282 mixed with or without sucrose on filter paper, mortality was 98.2 or 99.7% by 20 d. Dead treatment flies had mycoses rates of 68.8–93.0%. This study examines employee involvement programs in the unionized paper and pulp industry in North America. The data gathered from local union officers describe the economic and bargaining environment in which management established these programs. Additionally, the survey elicits each local union's description of and attitude toward its program once started. The analyses suggest that the manner in which programs are set up and subsequently administered correlates with the level of union support. A model of the North American pulp and paper Industry developed previously by the authors was used to simulate the trade of wood pulp between various regions of Canada and the United States, to the year 2000, under three different scenarios. The base simulation assumed no change in trade policies or cost competitiveness between regions, concentrating on the effects of changes in population and income. Under these assumptions, it was found that Canadian exports to the United States would remain approximately constant until 1990, but then double by the year 2000, reaching 5 million tons per year. Meanwhile, exports to the rest of the world would decline by 40 percent, to 2.5 million tons. Total Canadian exports would increase by some 15 percent over the next 20 years. In the second set of simulations, an ad valorem tariff on Canadian pulp was assumed. This led to a sharp reduction in U.S. imports. However, this decrease of Canadian exports to the United States would be compensated to a large extent by increased Canadian exports to Western Europe. The third simulation assumed a sustained rise in manufacturing costs for the entire pulp and paper sector in Canada. This resulted, unexpectedly, to a rise in exports of pulp to the United States. This paper describes the fabrication of cicada-wing-inspired antimicrobial surfaces using Glancing Angle Deposition (GLAD). From the study of an annual cicada (Neotibicen Canicularis, also known as dog-day cicada) in North America, it is found that the cicada wing surfaces are composed of unique three-dimensional (3D) nanofeature arrays, which grant them extraordinary properties including antimicrobial (antifouling) and antireflective. However, the morphology of these 3D nanostructures imposes challenges in artificially synthesizing the structures by utilizing and scaling up the template area from nature. From the perspective of circumventing the difficulties of creating 3D nanofeature arrays with top-down nanofabrication techniques, this paper introduces a nanofabrication process that combines bottom-up steps: self-assembled nanospheres are used as the bases of the features, while sub-100 nm pillars are grown on top of the bases by GLAD. Scanning electron micrographs show the resemblance of the synthesized cicada wing mimicry samples to the actual cicada wings, both quantitatively and qualitatively. The synthetic mimicry samples are hydrophobic with a water contact angle of 125˚. Finally, the antimicrobial properties of the mimicries are validated by showing flat growth curves of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and by direct observation under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are a class of insecticides that have high insecticidal activity and are extensively used worldwide. However, increasing evidence suggests their long-term residues in the environment and toxic effects on nontarget organisms. NEO residues are frequently detected in water and consequently have created increasing levels of pollution and pose significant risks to humans. Many studies have focused on NEO concentrations in water; however, few studies have focused on global systematic reviews or meta-analyses of NEO concentrations in water. The purpose of this review is to conduct a meta-analysis on the concentration of NEOs in global waters based on published detections from several countries to extend knowledge on the application of NEOs. In the present study, 43 published papers from 10 countries were indexed for a meta-analysis of the global NEO distribution in water. Most of these studies focus on the intensive agricultural area, such as eastern Asia and North America. The order of mean concentrations is identified as imidacloprid (119.542 ± 15.656 ng L−1) > nitenpyram (88.076 ± 27.144 ng L−1) > thiamethoxam (59.752 ± 9.068 ng L−1) > dinotefuran (31.086 ± 9.275 ng L−1) > imidaclothiz (24.542 ± 2.906 ng L−1) > acetamiprid (23.360 ± 4.015 ng L−1) > thiacloprid (11.493 ± 5.095 ng L−1). Moreover, the relationships between NEO concentrations and some environmental factors are analyzed. NEO concentrations increase with temperature, oxidation–reduction potential, and the percentage of cultivated crops but decrease with stream discharge, pH, dissolved oxygen, and precipitation. We conducted a systematic review to better understand this gap and analyzed i) in which global regions are studies usually conducted, ii) the taxon studied, iii) sampling methods and iv) how authors collaborated in these studies. We also tested the relationship between different types of land use and land cover and adult EPT communities using a meta-analysis. We searched for relevant articles on the website Web of Science, using specific words related to the subject. We found 454 papers and selected 31 of them for the scientometric analysis, as they were in accordance with our objectives, and eight for the meta-analysis. Among this subset, we observed that study areas and collaborations among authors were largely restricted to a few countries in Europe and North America. Most studies used the group Trichoptera, probably due to its diversity and the longevity of the adults compared to other groups. Light traps were the most common sampling method, most likely due to their efficiency in capturing flying insects with nocturnal habits. The greatest differences in adult EPT communities were found between open areas (moorland and prairie) and forest areas. This result indicated that the conversion of forest habitats into open areas negatively impacts adult EPT communities. Our systematic review can be an important tool to help researchers choose appropriate collection methods and taxonomic groups to work with in studies on impacts of land use change on adult EPT communities. Background: Selection biases affecting candidate matches to fellowship programs directly influence diversity within the surgical community. The review of selection bias has never been distinctively investigated in the Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery community. This study seeks to (i) evaluate factors affecting selection of candidates to HPB fellowships, (ii) examine explicit biases among program directors and faculty of HPB programs in North America, and (iii) compare the demography of the HPB faculty and recently graduated fellows to general surgery residents. Study Design: An anonymous, self-reported survey consisting of 10 sets of fictional applications was distributed to 52 faculty members, including program directors, of AHPBA-affiliated HPB fellowships in North America. The respondents had to pick a preferred candidate between two abridged, fictional HPB fellow applications and give an open-ended response as to why they picked that candidate. The applications were nearly identical with one notable characteristic of interest. Demographic information of both faculty and their recent fellows was also collected. This survey was administered and collected between February and April, 2020. Results: A total of 29 fully completed responses were received, comprising a 55.7% response rate. Respondents were 72.4% male, 69.0% Caucasian, and 79.3% held US medical degrees (MD). 50.0% of respondents preferred an MD candidate to a DO candidate, and 37% preferred US graduates to foreign-trained candidates. The respondents were unanimous in stating that gender, race, and family status were not a factor in their selection process. 5.0% said they would support an LGBTQ candidate when faced with otherwise similar applicants. Seventy-six HPB fellows from the past 5 years were 76.3% male, 56.6% Caucasian, and 51.3% US graduated Doctor of Medicine (US MD). Conclusion: This is the first study explicitly exploring the impact of demographic factors in the HPB fellowship selection process. The respondents unanimously and explicitly stated that race and gender do not play any role in their selection process. Yet, there is stark discordance between general surgery resident demographics and HPB fellow demographics. A greater effort to promote a more diverse HPB surgery community may be needed. Water scarcity is exacerbating in many regions across North America because of climate change compounded by population growth, overexploitation of freshwater resources, and lack of proper management. Considering the regional urgency, there is an immense need to find more equitable solutions for water management. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the climatic factors impacting the hydrological regime in North America, including changes in surface runoff, groundwater storage, and the forested watershed, based on current trends and future projection scenarios. Moreover, this paper critically overviews need-based solutions for effective water management at a regional scale. The study shows that many areas of North America are exposed to extreme events such as prolonged droughts, devastating floods, wildfires, and altering precipitation patterns. Consequently, these changes are triggering wide-ranging impacts on water resources, leading to water supply deficiencies and influencing water flows and quality in the Southwestern United States, prairie provinces in Canada, and Mexico. The projection of warming around the region experiences spatial and seasonal variations because of the diversity in climatic conditions. Overall, in North America, winter is expected to warm more than other seasons causing earlier runoff and a decline in snowmelt. Given the physical and economic constraints that limit the development of new utilities, emphasis should be placed on strengthening nature-based solutions such as green infrastructure. Thus, the findings suggest an integrated water resource management approach is required, along with climate-induced innovative technologies, to secure the water resources while preparing for the forecasted challenges of tomorrow. Studies that consider all dimensions of sustainable development (well-being of communities, protection of natural environment, and the competitive economy) are scarce. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate relationships between socio-eco-financial inputs and outputs and investigate high-tech companies' dynamic efficiency. Relationships were assessed by estimating Spearman as well as canonical correlations. Changes in socio-eco-efficiency through 2010–2016 were calculated using the panel data variant of data envelopment analysis – Malmquist index. High-tech companies were split into manufacturing (HTM) and knowledge-intensive services (HTKIS) sectors and, for additional insights, into Europe, North America, Asia & Pacific, and other regions. Findings indicate tight interrelatedness of socio-eco aspects and their weak relationship to the financial situation, where undesirable socio-eco situation reduces sales and return on assets only in HTM sector. Technological changes reveal post-crisis market recovery with increasing competition bringing fluctuating socio-eco-efficiency changes during the period analyzed. Pharmaceuticals in HTM and renewable energy in HTKIS had the highest efficiency changes of 0.73% and 0.81% on average, respectively, but these changes were not statistically significant. Meanwhile, for a few NACE categories significantly negative changes were found. North America featured a non-significantly positive socio-eco-efficiency change on average (only in HTM), whereas the Asia & Pacific region featured the most stable efficiency dynamics. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first research that recognizes all three dimensions of sustainable development to investigate high-tech companies' correlation patterns and dynamic efficiency throughout different sectors and world regions. To foresee global economic trends, one needs to understand the present startup companies that soon may become new market leaders. In this paper, we explore textual descriptions of more than 250 thousand startups in the Crunchbase database. We analyze the 2009–2019 period by using topic modeling. We propose a novel classification of startup companies free from expert bias that contains 38 topics and quantifies the weight of each of these topics for all the startups. Taking the year of establishment and geographical location of the startups into account, we measure which topics were increasing or decreasing their share over time, and which of them were predominantly present in Europe, North America, or other regions. We find that the share of startups focused on data analytics, social platforms, and financial transfers, and time management has risen, while an opposite trend is observed for mobile gaming, online news, and online social networks as well as legal and professional services. We also identify strong regional differences in topic distribution, suggesting certain concentration of the startups. For example, sustainable agriculture is presented stronger in South America and Africa, while pharmaceutics, in North America and Europe. Furthermore, we explore which pairs of topics tend to co-occur more often together, quantify how multisectoral the startups are, and which startup classes attract more investments. Finally, we compare our classification to the one existing in the Crunchbase database, demonstrating how we improve it. Plain English Summary: We propose a novel classification of more than 250 thousand startups registered in the Crunchbase database based on machine learning algorithms and free from expert bias. The article reports that the balmier climate of recent years has helped the mountain pine beetle of western North America reach ever-higher latitudes and elevations, resulting in the largest recorded outbreak of this insect. An effort to catalogue and predict the effects of the outbreak reveals that the destruction of pine forests by growing beetle populations will contribute to climate change. Werner Kurz, a forest ecologist with the Canadian Forest Service in Victoria, British Columbia, believes that the only way to stop the beetle is to kill it and its host which means cutting down and burning infected trees.

To investigate the response of ionosphere to strong geomagnetic storms at different latitudes, this paper focuses on the response characteristics of global ionospheric ROTI at different latitudes during the September 2017 strong geomagnetic storms based on global ROTI maps and GPS dual-frequency observation data, and explores the PPP accuracy of GPS stations at each latitude during two different types of strong geomagnetic storms. The results show that (i) the daily mean ROTI values during the September 2017 strong geomagnetic storms show a spatial distribution of higher in the global region in the high-latitude region of North America, the northern European region and the whole Antarctic region, and lower in other regions. (ii) The highest ROTI time mean value in the high-latitude belt, with a peak value of 0.30 TECU/min, exceeds twice the peak value of the global time mean value; within the mid-latitude belt, the ROTI time mean value in the northern hemisphere is larger, with values exceeding three times those of the Southern Hemisphere. (iii) During the strong geomagnetic storm in September 2017, the PPP results of high-latitude GPS stations were affected to a greater extent, and the mean value of positioning error in the vertical direction exceeded 2.0 m. (iv) During the strong geomagnetic storm in November 2021, the changing trend of the mean value of PPP positioning error at different latitudes was consistent with that of 2017, but the mean value of positioning error and RMS at high latitudes in 2021 was higher than those in 2017. Asexuality studies are an emerging field in North America and Europe which lack large-scale, qualitative studies. Much existing research focuses on defining and categorizing asexuality, with researchers calling for more focus on the romantic and sexual relationships of asexual people. Drawing from an online survey with 349 participants, this paper describes the perceptions and experiences that asexual people have with dating and relationships. Participants answered 16 open-ended and 9 close-ended questions. After rounds of coding, three themes were selected for examination. These were dating, romantic and/or sexual relationships, and platonic relationships. These results showcase the challenges asexuals face with dating while also demonstrating how asexual people actively dismantle understandings of romantic, sexual, and platonic relationships through their own experiences and perspectives. Overall, this study provides greater legitimacy to the fluidity of asexuality and asexual relationships. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Suicide among American Muslims is understudied, despite recent research highlighting increased suicide attempts among this population. While suicide is forbidden in Islam, formal guidelines for addressing and responding to suicide within Muslim communities did not exist until recently. The Stanford Muslim Mental Health and Islamic Psychology Lab has responded to a number of suicides in Muslim communities across North America and implemented an original model for suicide response and community healing. This approach incorporates Islamic principles and values to create a culturally and religiously congruent response to suicide that can support loss survivors and steer impacted communities toward healing. The Muslim Postvention Community Healing session described in this paper aims to provide a safe space for individuals impacted by suicide to come together and process their emotions, while also using Islamic teachings to guide the healing process. This unique model has the potential to serve as a valuable resource for Muslim communities across North America, and beyond, in addressing and responding to suicide. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scientists collaborate through intricate networks, which impact the quality and scope of their research. At the same time, funding and institutional arrangements, as well as scientific and political cultures, affect the structure of collaboration networks. Since such arrangements and cultures differ across regions in the world in systematic ways, we surmise that collaboration networks and impact should also differ systematically across regions. To test this, we compare the structure of collaboration networks among prominent researchers in North America and Europe. We find that prominent researchers in Europe establish denser collaboration networks, whereas those in North America establish more decentralized networks. We also find that the impact of the publications of prominent researchers in North America is significantly higher than for those in Europe, both when they collaborate with other prominent researchers and when they do not. Although Europeans collaborate with other prominent researchers more often, which increases their impact, we also find that repeated collaboration among prominent researchers decreases the synergistic effect of collaborating. The emerging information and communication technologies (ICT) related to Industry 4.0 play a critical role to enhance supply chain performance. Employing the smart technologies has led to so-called smart supply chains. Understanding how Industry 4.0 and related ICT affect smart supply chains and how smart supply chains evolve with the support of the advanced technologies are vital to practical and academic communities. Existing review works on smart supply chains with ICT mainly rely on the academic literature alone. This paper presents an integrated approach to explore the effects of Industry 4.0 and related ICT on smart supply chains, by combining introduction of the current national strategies in North America, the research status analysis on ICT assisted supply chains from the major North American national research councils, and a systematic literature review of the subject. Besides, we introduce a smart supply chain hierarchical framework with multi-level intelligence. In recent years, the winter surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly over North American midlatitudes shows a "warm west/cold east" (WWCE) dipole pattern with warm (cold) extremes occurring in the west (east) of North America. In this paper, the Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) condition linked to the WWCE SAT dipole is investigated. It is found that the winter WWCE dipole can be crudely considered as being a result of the winter mean of sub-seasonal WWCE events. While the sub-seasonal WWCE dipole is related to the positive Pacific North American pattern (PNA+), the impact of the PNA+ on the WWCE dipole depends on the different type of El Niño SST pattern and the phase of Pacific decadal Oscillation (PDO). For a Central-Pacific (CP) type El Niño, the positive (negative) height anomaly center of PNA+ is located in the western (eastern) North America to cause a strong WWCE dipole, though the positive PDO favors the WWCE dipole. In contrast, the WWCE dipole is suppressed under an Eastern-Pacific (EP) type El Niño because the anticyclonic anomaly of the PNA+ dominates the whole North America. Moreover, the physical cause of why different types of El Niño influence PNA+ is further examined. It is found that different types of El Niño can significantly influence the midlatitude location of PNA+ through changing North Pacific midlatitude westerly winds due to changes in the Pacific Hadley cell. For the CP-type El Niño, the eastward migration of PNA+ is suppressed to favor its anticyclonic (cyclonic) anomaly appearing in the western (eastern) North America due to reduced midlatitude westerly winds via weakened Pacific Hadley cell. But for the EP-type El Niño, midlatitude westerly wind is intensified to cause the midlatitude anticyclonic anomaly of the PNA+ appearing over the whole North America due to enhanced Pacific Hadley cell. Chronic Venous Disorders (CVD) of the lower limbs are one of the most prevalent medical conditions, affecting 35% of adults in Europe and North America. Due to the exponential growth of the aging population and the worsening of CVD with age, it is expected that the healthcare costs and the resources needed for the treatment of CVD will increase in the coming years. The early diagnosis of CVD is fundamental in treatment planning, while the monitoring of its treatment is fundamental to assess a patient's condition and quantify the evolution of CVD. However, correct diagnosis relies on a qualitative approach through visual recognition of the various venous disorders, being time-consuming and highly dependent on the physician's expertise. In this paper, we propose a novel automatic strategy for the joint segmentation and classification of CVDs. The strategy relies on a multi-task deep learning network, denominated VENet, that simultaneously solves segmentation and classification tasks, exploiting the information of both tasks to increase learning efficiency, ultimately improving their performance. The proposed method was compared against state-of-the-art strategies in a dataset of 1376 CVD images. Experiments showed that the VENet achieved a classification performance of 96.4%, 96.4%, and 97.2% for accuracy, precision, and recall, respectively, and a segmentation performance of 75.4%, 76.7.0%, 76.7% for the Dice coefficient, precision, and recall, respectively. The joint formulation increased the robustness of both tasks when compared to the conventional classification or segmentation strategies, proving its added value, mainly for the segmentation of small lesions. Urban travel demand analysis efforts predominantly use household travel surveys for data supports, especially in North America. However, proxy-biases and under-representations are two dominant issues looming over the practice of using household travel surveys. Proxy biases arise from the fact that one household member reports travel diaries on behalf of all household members, often with incomplete knowledge. Under-representation arises from various reasons, including insufficient coverage of sample frame of all population segments/strata. This paper proposes a hybrid approach of data fusion between a core household travel survey dataset and data from a specialized travel survey (termed as a satellite survey) to reduce both proxy-biases and under-representation in the core dataset. Taking the Greater Toronto Area as the study area, it uses a household travel survey, the Transportation Tomorrow Survey dataset to fuse with a travel diary survey of post-secondary students in Toronto. The proposed methodology uses simulation of travel diaries (based on a dynamic econometric model of activity-travel scheduling) to correct the proxy biases of the reported travel diaries of the post-secondary students living with families and direct insertion of travel diaries (from the satellite survey) of post-secondary students living on-campus who were not well-represented in the core survey. Results prove that the proposed methodology corrects the average trip rates of this particular sub-group of the population (post-secondary students) while preserving the key travel behaviour in the core dataset. Purpose: There are gaps in our knowledge to provide quality cancer care to the growing numbers of survivors. Leveraging existing data to answer survivorship research questions is one approach to address these gaps. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to replicate and expand a previous report of existing cancer survivorship survey data.Methods: We conducted a trifold search strategy for relevant surveys and data sets to (1) determine the extent to which cancer survivors are being surveyed, (2) determine the topics being covered in these surveys, and (3) create a compendium of information about these surveys and data sets, so researchers can conduct additional analyses.Results: Thirty-five surveys were identified and included in this report; most were longitudinal studies (71%) in adult cancer survivors (91%). The domains addressed in these surveys were general medical characteristics, medical conditions, costs, employment, symptoms and/or side effects, psychosocial factors and coping, perceived quality of care, and health behaviors.Conclusions: Existing data are available for researchers to explore new knowledge to enhance cancer survivorship quality care. This is an opportunity to fully utilize existing data to answer survivorship questions in a cost effective manner.Implications For Cancer Survivors: Survivors should be encouraged to participate in research studies as these data can close the gap in our knowledge and care of this growing population. The global mean surface temperature cooled slightly in the mid-twentieth century despite a continuous increase in greenhouse gas concentrations. The cooling was strongest in the Northern Hemisphere mid-latitudes, while the Southern Hemisphere mid-latitudes experienced moderate warming. This apparent contradiction is often attributed to internal multi-decadal variability originating from Pacific and Atlantic ocean-atmosphere interactions. Given the rapid increase of industrial activities in North America and Europe during that period, it is also plausible that anthropogenic aerosol (AA) emissions (as an external forcing) contributed to the stronger Northern Hemisphere cooling. This paper aims to quantify the contributions of AA and decadal variability to the 1948–1978 cooling. We analyzed the latitudinal temperature trend asymmetry in 60° S–60° N throughout the troposphere, using multiple reanalysis datasets and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) multi-model ensemble that bears significant similarity with the observed patterns. We show that both AA increase and the North Atlantic Variability Index (NAVI) transition into its negative phase are the major contributors to the latitudinal asymmetry of cooling. At the surface level, based on the horizontal pattern correlation method, AA and NAVI have similar contribution fractions (20 vs. 16%), but the contribution fraction of AA is much larger at 500 hPa (55 vs. 8%). Attributions based on vertical pattern correlation and latitudinal gradient show consistent results. Natural forcings (NAT) also contribute to the cooling asymmetry during mid-20C, but with a much smaller impact compared to AA and NAVI. Therefore, we argue that previous studies that mostly focused on surface variables may have underestimated the role of AA in the mid-twentieth-century climate change. Previous studies have reported significant uncertainty in the relationship between El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the winter surface air temperature (SAT) over central North America (NA). This paper uses reanalysis data and statistical methods to investigate the possible modulation effect of the Victoria mode (VM) during the preceding spring on the winter ENSO–SAT relationship. The correlation between ENSO and the winter SAT over central NA was found to be significantly positive during the positive VM phase. However, this significant correlation is almost absent during the negative VM phase. Further analysis revealed that the zonal location of the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) over the tropical Pacific is an essential aspect of this VM modulation. During the positive VM phase, the dominant positive SSTA in the central-eastern tropical Pacific contribute to the formation of the negative phase of the North Pacific Oscillation (NPO)-like teleconnection, which further enhances the anomalous southerly winds and SAT over central NA. In contrast, during the negative VM phase, the Aleutian low-like atmospheric response induced by the central tropical Pacific SSTA is limited to the central North Pacific, which has a limited effect on the variation of the central NA SAT. The VM modulation mechanism is shown to be well reproduced by historical simulations of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6. Our results suggest that, despite the uncertainty associated with the ENSO–SAT connection, ENSO may provide prediction skills for the winter SAT over central NA during the positive VM phase. Objective: To systematically summarize and evaluate the findings of existing studies about patients' perceptions of biosimilars by assessing their attitudes and knowledge. Methods: We conducted a systematic review of published studies concerning patients' perceptions of biosimilars, using databases of China National Knowledge Infrastructure, SinoMed, Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Two independent reviewers screened a total of 2197 Chinese or English papers published between 1 January 2018, and 1 October 2022. We assessed the quality of the included studies by applying the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tools. Results: Forty-three studies were included in the review, with the majority originating from Europe (n = 22) and North America (n = 10). Of these studies, 37 were cross-sectional quantitative studies, three were quasi-experimental studies, and the remaining three were qualitative studies based on semi-structured interviews. The sample sizes of the included studies ranged from 9 to 6554 patients. Twenty-two out of 31 studies investigating patients' acceptance of biosimilars found that most participants expressed satisfaction with treatment using biosimilars. However, doubts about the clinical effects and regulatory approval pathway could negatively influence patients' attitudes. The majority of patients understood the economic advantages of biosimilars; however, some incorrectly connected lower prices with lower quality. Patients generally lacked knowledge about biosimilars. There were 6–51% of participants who were familiar with biosimilars, and 25–58% thought they did not know enough about biosimilars. Physicians, pharmacists, medicines agencies, academia, and patient associations were identified as the main sources of information on biosimilars for patients. Healthcare providers not informing or advising patients about switching may hinder patients from acquiring enough knowledge. Conclusions: The majority of patients expressed satisfaction with treatment using biosimilars, but limited knowledge continued to impede their perceptions. Doubts about the clinical effects and regulatory approval pathway were identified as major factors that negatively influenced patients' attitudes towards biosimilars, while the impact of a price advantage was mixed. It is essential to maintain a focus on educating healthcare professionals about biosimilars, including their clinical outcomes and the regulatory pathway, which equips them to provide comprehensive and informed guidance to patients. The application of multiple lines of evidence is necessary to understand past complex behaviors such as diet and cuisine. This paper advocates for the use of multiple proxies to analyze the compositional content of absorbed and adhered food residues associated with ceramic cooking pots. Foods represented by starches and phytoliths in adhered carbonized residues, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values in adhered residues, and absorbed lipid residues are identified. Patterns of interior carbonized food remains are used to interpret cooking mode or style, and, when considered in context with identified food types, allow for the reconstruction of ancient cooking practices and cuisine. The collective results provide a more holistic picture of ancient cuisine than any individual proxy because of the unique yet complementary data each provides. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated with a curated pottery assemblage from the Northern Great Lakes in what is today the state of Michigan. Low fertility is set to worsen economic problems in many developed countries, and maternity, paternity, and parental leave have emerged as key pro-natal policies. Gender inequity in the balance of domestic and formal work has been identified as a key driver of low fertility, and leave can potentially equalise this balance and thereby promote fertility. However, the literature contends that evidence for the effect of leave on fertility is mixed. We conduct the first systematic review on this topic. By applying a rigorous search protocol, we identify and review empirical studies that quantify the impact of leave policies on fertility. We focus on experimental or quasi-experimental studies that can identify causal effects. We identify 11 papers published between 2009 and 2019, evaluating 23 policy changes across Europe and North America from 1977 to 2009. Results are a mixture of positive, negative, and null impacts on fertility. To explain these apparent inconsistencies, we extend the conceptual framework of Lalive and Zweimüller (2009), which decomposes the total effect of leave on fertility into the "current-child" and "future-child" effects. We decompose these into effects on women at different birth orders, and specify types of study design to identify each effect. We classify the 23 studies in terms of the type of effect identified, revealing that all the negative or null studies identify the current-child effect, and all the positive studies identify the future-child or total effect. Since the future-child and total effects are more important for promoting aggregate fertility, our findings show that leave does in fact increase fertility when benefit increases are generous. Furthermore, our extensions to Lalive and Zweimüller's conceptual framework provide a more sophisticated way of understanding and classifying the effects of pro-natal policies on fertility. Birds have been studied in rice fields for over a century. Early studies focused on species directly linked to crop production, either because they were considered to be crop pests or because they preyed upon undesirable species found in fields. Prior to 1970, most studies focused on waterfowl, with a majority coming from North America. This taxonomic and geographic bias persisted into the 1980s, when research began to diversify along multiple axes. Work on birds in rice fields has expanded on all continents, but is dominated by studies from Asia, Europe, and North America. Although Asian studies have become more numerous, they remain substantially fewer than expected given the geographic distribution of rice production. Studies from Africa are also less common than expected on the basis of the area of rice grown. Taxonomically, studies of large wading birds are now most numerous, although waterfowl research remains common. Studies of other taxonomic groups have also increased, as has research that examines the avian community more broadly by considering birds from multiple taxonomic groups. Landbird studies peaked in the 1990s with a focus on controlling crop depredation, but remain rare otherwise. Most research remains centered on waterbirds, despite evidence of rice field use by a diversity of passerines, raptors, and other landbirds. Research also has been dominated by descriptive studies, usually with an applied focus. Ornithologists, however, are beginning to recognize the high potential of rice field systems for conducting more experimental studies and for testing a wider variety of basic ecological questions. The wealth-to-income ratio (WIR) in many Western countries, particularly in Europe and North America, increased by a factor of two in the last three decades. This represents a defining empirical trend: a rewealthization (from the French repatrimonialisation)—or the comeback of (inherited) wealth primacy since the mid-1990s. For the sociology of social stratification, "occupational classes" based on jobs worked must now be understood within a context of wealth-based domination. This paper first illustrates important empirical features of an era of rising WIR. We then outline the theory of rewealthization as a major factor of class transformations in relation to regimes stabilized in the post-WWII industrial area. Compared to the period where wealth became secondary to education and earnings for middle-class lifestyles, rewealthization steepens society's vertical structure; the "olive-shaped" Western society is replaced by a new one where wealth "abundance" at the top masks social reproduction and frustrations below. The emergence of global value chains (GVCs) has provided some firms the opportunity to internationalize by specializing in the production of specific inputs or tasks along the chain, with a direct impact on a country's competitiveness. China, for instance, managed to enter low value added phases in GVCs to rapidly become a major player in world trade. Against this background, this paper asks whether North Africa, given its favourable geographic position in the Mediterranean and proximity to Europe, can grab similar opportunities. In particular, it analyzes the GVCs participation of North African firms and its implications for productivity. Since the coordination of vertically fragmented production processes increasingly relies on an adequate level of quality and reliability, especially when the inputs from several stages and locations must come together in a specific way, we identify firms involved in GVCs as traders with internationally recognized quality certification. Using a propensity score matching diff-in-diff method, the paper finds that firms that enter GVCs both perform better ex ante and show additional productivity gains ex post. Results suggest that policies designed to support certifications and compliance with international standards and to increase trust between firms in different countries, represent an important tool for linking developing countries to global production networks, with possible positive consequences on their economic development and growth. Background: The demand for estimates of biological nitrogen (N) fixation inputs in agricultural systems is driven by the need to effectively manage the global N cycle. Scope: We present a methodology for quantifying N2 fixation by the grain legume-rhizobia symbioses that can be used for any year or sequence of years for which area and production statistics for legume oilseed and pulse crops were available and at country-to-global scales. The coefficients used in the templates – harvest index, N harvest index, %N shoots, %N grain and a factor to account for below-ground N – were aggregated from 224 reports containing > 4,000 observations. Values for the % total crop N derived from atmospheric N2 (%Ndfa) for specific grain legumes and regions were determined in a companion paper. The grain legumes were estimated to fix a global total of 35.5 Tg N in the year 2018 - 25.0 Tg for soybean (Glycine max), 7.2 Tg for the pulses and 3.3 Tg for groundnut (Arachis hypogaea). Soybean dominated global grain legume N2 fixation, with 38 % of total N fixed associated with soybean in South and Central America and a further 22 % by soybean in North America. Conclusions: The updated estimates of N2 fixation by the grain legumes inform us of a substantial and increasing role that biological N2 fixation plays in global agricultural systems. This paper examined the link between common urban forms in North America and the energy use of drinking water distribution systems. (The urban form of an urban area relates to its street topology and population density.) Common street topologies and neighborhood population densities were combined to evaluate the impact on pumping energy and embodied energy in drinking water distribution systems. Embodied energy included the life-cycle activities required for the fabrication, transportation, and initial installation of pipes. The results indicated that the gridiron topology had a lower embodied and pumping energy use than the warped parallel and cul-de-sac/loop topologies. Over the past 50 years, pediatric and congenital electrophysiology has progressed from a rare subspecialty practiced at just a handful of centers to become an essential part of nearly every congenital heart program the world over. This paper traces the evolution of the subspecialty in North America by recognizing the individuals who dedicated their careers to this field and trained subsequent generations of practitioners, thereby establishing a legacy that insures continued progress in the treatment of arrhythmias for children and patients with congenital heart disease. Data were generated from a survey of the current membership of the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society and were supplemented by review of archived Society records. The building sector is a voracious consumer of primary materials. However, the study of building material use and associated impacts is challenged by the paucity of publicly available data in the field and the heterogeneity of data organization and classification between published studies. This paper makes two main contributions. First, we propose and demonstrate a building material data structure adapted from UniFormat and MasterFormat, two widely used construction classification systems in North America. Second, the dataset included provides fine grained material data for 70 buildings in North America. The dataset was developed by collecting design or construction drawings for the studied buildings and performing material takeoffs based on these drawings. The ontology is based on UniFormat and MasterFormat to facilitate interoperability with existing construction management practices, and to suggest a standardized structure for future material intensity studies. The data structure supports investigation into how form and building design are driving material use, opportunities to reduce construction material consumption and better understanding of how materials are used in buildings. Purpose: Early referral of neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) patients to multidisciplinary clinics is critical for timely diagnosis, treatment, and improved functional outcomes. In Saudi Arabia, inadequate knowledge regarding NBPP is a reason for delayed referral. We aimed to evaluate the knowledge of North American healthcare providers (HCPs) regarding the diagnosis, management, and prognosis of NBPP. Methods: A 12-question survey regarding NBPP was distributed via electronic and paper formats to North American providers from various referring and treating specialties. NBPP knowledge was compared between Saudi Arabian vs. North American providers, referring vs. treating specialties, academic vs. community hospitals, and providers with self-reported confidence vs. nonconfidence in NBPP knowledge. Results: Of the 273 surveys collected, 45% were from referring providers and 55% were from treating providers. Saudi Arabian and North American HCPs demonstrated similar NBPP knowledge except for potential etiologies for NBPP and surgery timing. In North America, referring and treating providers had similar overall knowledge of NBPP but lacked familiarity with its natural history. A knowledge gap existed between academic and community hospitals regarding timing of referral/initiation of physical/occupational therapy (PT/OT) and Horner's syndrome. Providers with self-reported confidence in treating NBPP had greater knowledge of types of NBPP and timing for PT/OT initiation. Conclusions: Overall, North American providers demonstrated adequate knowledge of NBPP. However, both eastern and western physicians remain overly optimistic in believing that most infants recover spontaneously. This study revealed a unique and universal knowledge gap in NBPP diagnosis, referral, and management worldwide. Continuous efforts to increase NBPP knowledge are indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a macro-social perspective on Jewish populations and societies in the Americas, arguing for a broad transnational view of several different fundamental demographic and ideational processes and trends. The goal is to detect broad commonalities versus regional differences in the Jewish experience on the American continent beyond local national frameworks. Commonalities and differences between Jews in the different parts of the Americas emerge through observing Jewish population distribution and its relation to local human development levels, inter- and intracontinental migration, levels and modes of Jewish education, and patterns of Jewish identification, socialization, and assimilation. I address Jewish interactions with the majority of society by examining frequencies of antisemitism across different countries. Interactions within the Jewish collective itself are assessed by looking at mutual influences through the worldwide institutional network. Conclusions are suggested at the pancontinental level. A variety of quantitative analytical tools are used. A renewed adoption of relational perspectives by archaeologists working in eastern North America has created an opportunity to move beyond categorical approaches, those reliant on the top-down implementation of essentialist models or "types." Instead, emerging approaches, concerned with highlighting the agential power of relationships between individuals, communities, and institutions, and, more generally, with simply moving beyond categories, are allowing archaeologists to move from the bottom-up, focusing instead on the relationships that underlie, and indeed constitute, social, political, and economic phenomena. In this paper, I synthesize recent archaeological work from across eastern North America in which archaeologists have productively moved beyond a reliance on categorical perspectives. Dynamical downscaling (DD) consists in using archives of Coupled Global Climate Models (CGCM) simulations as the atmospheric and sea-surface boundary conditions (BC) to drive nested, Regional Climate Model (RCM) simulations. Biases in the CGCM-generated driving BC, however, can have detrimental impacts on RCM performance. It is well documented for the historical period that CGCM-simulated sea-surface temperatures (SST) suffer substantial biases, especially important near coastal regions. Assuming that these SST biases are time-invariant, they could in principle be subtracted from century-long CGCM projections before being used to drive RCMs. This paper investigates the performance of a 3-step DD approach as follows. The CGCM-simulated sea-surface temperatures (SST) are first empirically corrected by subtracting their systematic biases; the corrected SST are then used as ocean surface BC for an atmosphere-only GCM (AGCM) simulation; finally this AGCM simulation provides the atmospheric lateral BC to drive an RCM simulation. This is what we refer to as the 3-step approach CGCM–AGCM–RCM of DD, which can be compared to the traditional 2-step approach CGCM–RCM consisting of driving an RCM simulation directly by CGCM-generated BC. In this paper we compare the results obtained with the two approaches, for present and future climates under RCP8.5, using the fifth-generation Canadian Regional Climate Model (CRCM5) with a grid mesh of 0.22° over the North American CORDEX domain, driven by two CMIP5 models: the Canadian Earth System Model of the Canadian Centre for Climate modelling and analysis (CanESM2) and the Earth System Model of the Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie (MPI-ESM-MR). The results show that, in current climate, the seasonal-mean 2-m temperature fields simulated with the 3-step DD have generally smaller biases with respect to the observations than those simulated with the 2-step DD; in fact the performance of the 3-step DD simulations often approaches that of the reanalyses-driven simulation. For the seasonal-mean precipitation field, however, the differences between the two DD methods are not conclusive. Differences between the projected climate changes with the two DD methods vary substantially depending upon the variable being considered. Differences are particularly important for temperature: over the bulk of the North American continent, the 3-step DD projects more warming in winter and less in summer. This study seeks to provide new insights into a hidden pattern in the cross-national scholarly network structure from an altmetric perspective. We investigate and visualize the dynamic and complex nature of altmetric-based referrals using a social network algorithm that measures societal use (via Twitter) and scientific impact (via Mendeley). We also use a variety of network indices and a QAP (quadratic assignment procedure) to validate the structural relationships between inter-country sharing networks. Despite an abundant use of the term "Out of the loop" (OOTL) in the context of automated driving and human factors research, there is currently a lack of consensus on its precise definition, how it can be measured, and the practical implications of being in or out of the loop during automated driving. The main objective of this paper is to consider the above issues, with the goal of achieving a shared understanding of the OOTL concept between academics and practitioners. To this end, the paper reviews existing definitions of OOTL and outlines a set of concepts, which, based on the human factors and driver behaviour literature, could serve as the basis for a commonly-agreed definition. Following a series of working group meetings between representatives from academia, research institutions and industrial partners across Europe, North America, and Japan, we suggest a precise definition of being in, out, and on the loop in the driving context. These definitions are linked directly to whether or not the driver is in physical control of the vehicle, and also the degree of situation monitoring required and afforded by the driver. A consideration of how this definition can be operationalized and measured in empirical studies is then provided, and the paper concludes with a short overview of the implications of this definition for the development of automated driving functions. There are important economic and environmental incentives to recycling. Unfortunately, secondary aluminum frequently contains undesirable impurity elements. These limit the amount of secondary material that can be recovered, since the usual practice has been to meet alloy specifications by dilution (that is, by blending with primary metal). In 2019, China curtailed the importation of scrap metal, which changed the scrap market in North America. The price differential between secondary and primary metal suddenly became 20 or 30 cents a pound, sometimes more. This differential was large enough that producers began to ask: "Is there a refining process we can we use to recover this scrap?" This paper is an attempt to answer this question. Chemical factors which make it possible (or impossible) to remove an impurity are reviewed in detail. North American and West European academics are accepting offers to speak or teach about business ethics to audiences in countries with transitional economies. Such engagements should not be accepted without an appreciation for the challenges involved. This paper outlines the dynamics of business ethics in these former communist countries and describes circumstances relating to ethical training, and course content and pedagogy. A concluding section of the paper identifies some guidelines that instructors should consider before becoming involved with ethical training in transitional economies. This paper examines the water quality legacies of historic and current iron mining in the Mesabi Range, the most productive iron range in the history of North America, producing more than 42% of the world’s iron ore in the 1950s. Between 1893 and 2016, 3.5 × 109 t of iron ore were shipped from the Mesabi Range to steel plants throughout the world. We map historic sites and quantities of iron mining, ore processing, water use, and tailings deposition within subwatershed boundaries. We then map the locations of impaired lakes within HUC-12 subwatershed boundaries within the Mesabi Range, using government datasets created for US federal Clean Water Act reporting. Comparing watersheds with and without historic mining activity, watersheds with historic mining activity currently contain a greater percentage of impaired lakes than control watersheds within the same range. These results suggest that historic iron ore mining and processing in the Mesabi Range affected water quality on a landscape scale, and these legacies persist long after the mines have closed. This paper outlines a novel spatial approach that land managers and policy makers can apply to other landscapes to assess the effects of past mining activity on watershed health.
