This study describes a computational analysis technique for evaluating the effect of screw spacing and angle on the pediatric hip locking plate system in proximal femoral osteotomy in pediatric patients having DDH with an aberrant femoral head and femoral angle. Under static compressive load conditions, the stresses of the screw and bone were examined as the screw spacing and angle changed. The spacing and angle of various screws were specifically considered as variables in this study based on the pile mechanism studied in civil engineering. As with the group pile mechanism, the tighter the screw spacing under static compressive loads, the more the overlapping effect between the bone stresses and the screws develops, increasing the risk of injuring the patient's bone. Therefore, a series of simulations was performed to determine the optimal screw spacing and angles to minimize the overlapping effect of bone stress. In addition, a formula for determining the minimum screw spacing was proposed based on the computational simulation results. Finally, if the outcomes of this study are applied to pediatric patients with DDH in the pre-proximal femoral osteotomy stage, post-operative load-induced femur damage will be reduced. Although numerous cathode materials with excellent properties have been developed for use in molten salt thermal batteries, similar progress is yet to be made with anode materials. Herein, a high-performance lithium-impregnated metal foam anode (LIMFA) is fabricated by impregnating molten lithium into a gold-coated iron–chrome–aluminium (FeCrAl) foam at 400 °C. A test cell employing the LIMFA FeCrAl anode exhibited a specific capacity of 2627 As g−1. For comparison, a cell with a conventional Li(Si) anode was also discharged, demonstrating a specific capacity of 982 As g−1. This significant improvement in performance can be attributed to the large amount (18 wt%) of lithium incorporated into the FeCrAl foam and the ability of the FeCrAl foam to absorb and immobilize molten lithium without adopting a cup system. For thermal batteries without a cup, the LIMFA FeCrAl provides the highest-reported specific capacity and a flat discharge voltage curve of molten lithium. After cell discharge, the FeCrAl foam exhibited no lithium leakage, surface damage, or structural collapse. Given these advantageous properties, in addition to its high specific capacity, LIMFA FeCrAl is expected to aid the development of thermal batteries with enhanced performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) can only detect high-degree hyperfibrinolysis (HF), despite being frequently used in trauma patients. We investigated whether considering FIBTEM HF (the presence of maximal lysis (ML) > 15%) could increase ROTEM-based HF detection's sensitivity. This observational cohort study was performed at a level 1 trauma centre. Trauma patients with an Injury Severity Score (ISS) > 15 who underwent ROTEM in the emergency department between 2016 and 2017 were included. EXTEM HF was defined as ML > 15% in EXTEM. We compared mortality rates between EXTEM HF, FIBTEM HF, and non-HF patient groups. Overall, 402 patients were included, of whom 45% were men (mean age, 52.5 years; mean ISS, 27). The EXTEM HF (n = 37), FIBTEM HF (n = 132), and non-HF (n = 233) groups had mortality rates of 81.1%, 22.3%, and 10.3%, respectively. The twofold difference in mortality rates between the FIBTEM HF and non-HF groups remained statistically significant after Bonferroni correction (P = 0.01). On multivariable Cox regression analysis, FIBTEM HF was independently associated with in-hospital mortality (adjusted hazard ratio 2.15, 95% confidence interval 1.21–3.84, P = 0.009). Here, trauma patients with FIBTEM HF had significantly higher mortality rates than those without HF. FIBTEM be a valuable diagnostic method to improve HF detection's sensitivity in trauma patients. The correlation between primary Si and silicide refinement induced by ultrasonic treatment (UST) of multicomponent Al–Si alloy containing Ti, Zr, V, and P was investigated. UST significantly refined the primary Si phase owing to cavitation-induced wetting and deagglomeration of MgAl2O4 particles. Lowering the UST finish temperature caused deterioration of the degree of primary Si refinement, instead leading to silicide refinement. Cavitation-induced silicide nucleation on wetted MgAl2O4 consumed the MgAl2O4 particles, particularly in the case of primary Si nucleation. Similarly, the formation of an AlP phase on the silicide phase reduced the nucleation efficiency of the AlP phase. Poisoning of the MgAl2O4 and AlP phases by the silicide phase was responsible for the deterioration in primary Si refinement. A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile by means of gliding, and short rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain SH35T, was isolated from the dry surface of a tidal flat in Hwasung-si, South Korea. Growth occurred at 10-40°C (optimum 30°C), at pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0), in 1-12% NaCl (optimum 2%), and was inhibited in the absence of NaCl and Ca2+ ions. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain SH35T belonged to the genus Gramella and was a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae with highest sequence similarity to Gramella flava JLT2011T (96.1%), followed by Gramella oceani CCAMSZ-TT (95.6%), and 93.0-94.9% to other recognized Gramella species. The major cellular fatty acids (> 5% of the total) of strain SH35T were iso-C15:0, Iso-C16:0, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C17:0 3-OH and summed feature 9 (C16:0 10-methyl and/or C17:1 iso ω9с). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, two unidentified aminolipids and nine unidentified polar lipids. The major respiratory quinone and the predominant polyamine were menaquinone-6 (MK-6) and symhomospermidine, respectively. The DNA G + C content was 40.5 mol% (39.7% based on total genome calculations). Based on phylogenetic analysis and physiological and biochemical characterization, strain SH35T represents a novel species of the genus Gramella, for which the name Gramella fulva sp. nov. is proposed. A novel Gram-stain-negative, motile by means of gliding, and short rod-shaped bacterium, designated HS916T, was isolated from soil polluted by sewer water in Cheonan-si, South Korea. Growth occurred at 10-35°C (optimum 30°C), pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0), and 0-1% sodium chloride (NaCl, w/v). Based on similarities of 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain HS916T was closely related to members of the genus Flavobacterium, exhibiting the highest sequence similarities with Flavobacterium glycines Gm-149T (96.4%), followed by F. granuli Kw05T (96.3%), F. fluminis 3R17T (96.3%), F. aquicola TMd3a3T (96.2%), and F. nitratireducens N1T (96.2%). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain HS916T was placed in a monophyletic cluster with F. nitratireducens N1T and F. fluminis 3R17T. The predominant fatty acids (> 5% of the total) of strain HS916T were iso-C15:0, anteiso-C15:0, iso-C15:0 3-OH, C17:1ω6с, C16:0 3-OH, iso-C17:0 3-OH, and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7с and/or C16:1ω6с). The major polar lipids of the strain comprised phosphatidylethanolamine, unidentified aminolipids, and five unidentified lipids. The predominant respiratory quinone and the major polyamine were menaquinone-6 (MK-6) and symhomospermidine, respectively. The DNA G + C content of strain HS916T was 34.9 mol%. Based on polyphasic analyses, strain HS916T represents a novel species belonging to the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium parvum sp. nov. is proposed. WS-10-a Gram-negative, non-motile, and aerobic bacterial strain-was isolated from the sediment of a shallow stream in Korea. The optimum ranges of temperature and pH for growth were 20-40°C (optimum 28°C) and pH 6.0-8.0 (optimum pH 7.0), respectively. The DNA G+C content of strain WS-10 was 72.7 mol%. The major fatty acids (>5%) were summed feature 8 (C ω7c), summed feature 3 (C ω7c and/or C ω6c), C, and C 2-OH. The major polar lipids consisted of phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, and unidentified aminolipids. Q-10 was the predominant respiratory quinone. The highest similarities in the 16S rRNA gene sequence were shown with Paracraurococcus ruber (95.3%), Belnapia soli (95.3%), B. moabensis (95.1%), and B. rosea (95.0%). A phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons showed that strain WS-10T formed a distinct line within a clade containing the genera Paracraurococcus, Craurococcus, and Belnapia in the family Acetobacteraceae. On the basis of polyphasic evidence, strain WS-10 represents a novel species of a new genus in the family Acetobacteraceae, for which the name Dankookia rubra gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. Legionellosis outbreak is a major global health care problem. However, current Legionella risk assessments may be compromised by uncertainties in Legionella detection methods, infectious dose, and strain infectivity. These limitations may place public health at significant risk, leading to significant monetary losses in health care. However, there are still unmet needs for its rapid identification and monitoring of legionellae in water systems. Therefore, in the present study, a primer set was designed based on a LysR-type transcriptional regulator (LTTR) family protein gene of Legionella pneumophila subsp. pneumophila str. Philadelphia 1 because it was found that this gene is structurally diverse among species through BLAST searches. The specificity of the primer set was evaluated using genomic DNA from 6 strains of L. pneumophila, 5 type strains of other related Legionella species, and other 29 reference pathogenic bacteria. The primer set used in the PCR assay amplified a 264-bp product for only targeted six strains of L. pneumophila. The assay was also able to detect at least 1.39 × 10 copies/μl of cloned amplified target DNA using purified DNA or 7.4 × 10 colony-forming unit per reaction when using calibrated cell suspension. Escherichia coli serotype O157 is still a major global healthcare problem. However, only limited information is now available on the molecular and serological detection of pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, the development of appropriate strategies for their rapid identification and monitoring is still needed. In general, the sequence analysis based on stx, slt, eae, hlyA, rfb, and fliC genes is widely employed for the identification of E. coli serotype O157; but there have been critical defects in the diagnosis and identification of E. coli serotype O157, in that they are also present in other E. coli serogroups. In this study, NCBI-BLAST searches using the nucleotide sequences of the putative regulatory protein gene from E. coli O157:H7 str. Sakai found sequence difference at the serotype level. The specific primers from the putative regulatory protein gene were designed and investigated for their sensitivity and specificity for detecting the pathogen in environment water samples. The specificity of the primer set was evaluated using genomic DNA from 8 isolates of E. coli serotype O157 and 32 other reference strains. In addition, the sensitivity and specificity of this assay were confirmed by successful identification of E. coli serotype O157 in environmental water samples. In conclusion, this study showed that the newly developed quantitative serotype-specific PCR method is a highly specific and efficient tool for the surveillance and rapid detection of high-risk E. coli serotype O157. A novel bacterial strain, designated PFS-5, was isolated from the soil environment with feces of a live poultry farm located in Cheonan, Republic of Korea. Strain PFS-5 was Gram-staining-positive, motile, strictly aerobic bacterium, rod-shaped, and endospore-forming. The strain contained meso-diaminopimelic acid in their peptidoglycan and MK-7 menaquinone. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C (44.2%), C (22.2%), and iso-C (16.7%). The DNA G+C content was 40.1 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis identified strain PFS-5 in the genus Bacillus, exhibiting the highest level of sequence similarity with type strain of B. herbersteinensis D-1,5a (96.9%), B. humi LMG 22167 (96.7%), B. alkalitelluris BA288 (96.1%), B. litoralis SW-211 (96.0%), and B. luteolus YIM93174 (95.5%). The major polar lipids of PFS-5 were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. A novel bacterial strain, designated ARSA-111, was isolated from a freshwater reservoir in Cheonan, Korea. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that the isolate belonged to the genus Flavobacterium of phylum Bacteroidetes. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain ARSA-111 showed a high degree of sequence similarity to those of Flavobacteium cheonanense KACC 14972 (97.3%), F. aquatile JCM 20475 (97.1%), and other type strains of the genus Flavobacterium (< 97.0%). The phylogenetic tree and network analysis (i.e. median-joining) based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain ARSA-111 is most closely related to F. aquatile JCM 20475. DNA-DNA hybridization experiment revealed 70% of genomic relatedness among strain ARSA-111, F. aquatile JCM 20475 and F. cheonanense KACC 14972. The isolate had iso-C, iso-C, and iso-C 3-OH as predominant cellular fatty acids and MK-6 as a predominant menaquinone. The genomic DNA G+C content of the isolate was 35.6 mol%. On the basis of these data, strain ARSA-111 is considered to be a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium aquaticum sp. nov. is proposed. A novel bacterium, designated strain ARSA-15, was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from the Cheonho reservoir, Cheonan, Republic of Korea. The isolate was deep-yellow pigment, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the isolate belongs to the genus Flavobacterium, and shared less than 97% sequence similarity with recognized Flavobacterium species. The novel species was able to grow at 10-37°C, pH 6.5-10.0, and in 0-0.5% (w/v) NaCl concentrations. Chemotaxonomically, iso-C, iso-C, and iso-C were observed to be the predominant cellular fatty acid, and menaquinone-6 (MK-6) was the predominant respiratory quinone. The major polar lipid patterns of strain ARSA-19 was phosphatidylethanolamine, unknown aminolipid (AL1 and AL2), and unidentified polar lipids (L1, L2, and L3). The genomic DNA G+C content of the isolate was 39.2 mol%. On the basis of polyphasic approach, strain ARSA-15 represents a novel species of the genus Flavobacterium, for which the name Flavobacterium cheonhonense sp. nov. is proposed. A novel bacterial strain, designated NA-09, was isolated from a freshwater sample collected from the Cheonho reservoir, Republic of Korea. Colonies were creamy-white pigmented, translucent, and circular with convex shape. The isolate was Gram-staining negative, strictly aerobic, motile, and rod-shaped. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain NA-09 belonged to the genus Arenimonas and showed the highest sequence similarities with Arenimonas malthae CC-JY-1 (95.4%), A. oryziterrae YC6267 (94.9%), A. composti P2-12-1 (94.8%), and A. donghaensis H03-R19 (94.1%). The major fatty acids were iso-C (20.8%), iso-C (16.9%), summed feature 1 (13.2%), and iso-C ω7 c alcohol (10.2%). The major isoprenoid quinone of the isolate was ubiquionone-8. On the basis of the data from the polyphasic characterization, the strain NA-09 represents a novel species, for which the name Arenimonas aquaticum sp. nov. is proposed (type strain NA-09 =KACC 14663 =NBRC 106550). Taxonomic studies were performed on three strains isolated from Cheonho reservoir in Cheonan, Korea. The isolates were Gram-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, non-motile, catalase-positive, and oxidase-positive. Colonies on solid media were cream-yellow, smooth, shiny, and circular. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that these strains belong to the genus Flavobacterium. The strains shared 98.6-99.4% sequence similarity with each other and showed less than 97% similarity with members of the genus Flavobacterium with validly published names. The DNA-DNA hybridization results confirmed the separate genomic status of strains ARSA-42, ARSA-103, and ARSA-108. The isolates contained menaqui-none-6 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C, iso-C 3-OH, iso-Ci G, and iso-C 3-OH as the major fatty acids. The genomic DNA G+C content of the isolates were 31.4-33.2 mol%. According to the phenotypic and genotypic data, these organisms are classified as representative of three novel species in the genus Flavobacterium, and the name Flavobacterium koreense sp. nov. (strain ARSA-42 =KCTC 23182 =JCM 17066 =KACC 14969), Flavobacterium chungnamense sp. nov. (strain ARSA-103 =KCTC 23183 =JCM 17068 =KACC 14971), and Flavobacterium cheonanense sp. nov. A pink-pigmented bacterium, designated SW08-7T was isolated from the drinking water of a water purifier. Cells were Gram-negative, rod-shaped, strictly aerobic, and non-spore-forming. It grew optimally at 25°C, pH 6∼7. Phylogenese analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence showed that strain SW08-7T belongs to the genus Methylobacterium. The highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities were found to Methylobacterium mesophilicum JCM 2829T (96.9%), Methylobacterium brachiatum B0021T (96.9%), Methylobacterium phyllosphaerae CBMB27T (96.6%), Methylobacterium radiotolerans JCM 2831T (96.6%), and Methylobacterium hispanicum GP34T (96.5%). DNA-DNA hybridization experiment revealed low-level (28.5%) of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain SW08-7T and Methylobacterium hispanicum. The genomic DNA G+C content was 68.9 mol% and the major isoprenoid quinone was Q-10. The major cellular fatty acid of strain SW08-7T was C18:1 ω7 c (79.8±2.1%). Results of phylogenetic, phenotypic, and biochemical analyses revealed that strain SW08-7T could be classified as representing a novel species of genus Methylobacterium, for which the name Methylobacterium dankookense sp. nov. is proposed. Weissella koreensis is a psychrophilic bacterium that is the dominant species found in kimchi and exhibits anti-obesity effects via its production of ornithine. In this study, we mined the genome of W. koreensis KACC15510 to identify species-specific genes that can serve as new targets for the detection and quantification of W. koreensis in kimchi. A specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primer set for the membrane protein-encoding gene of W. koreensis KACC15510 was designed and investigated to quantify its sensitivity and specificity for detecting the bacterium in kimchi. The specificity of the primer set was evaluated using genomic DNA from eight isolates of W. koreensis, 11 different species of Weissella and 13 other reference lactic acid bacterium (LAB) strains.
