Phononic crystals (PnCs) emerge as an innovative sensor technology, especially for high-performance sensing applications. This study strives to advance this field by developing new designs of PnC structures that exhibit stability in the face of construction imperfections and deformations, focusing on the evolution of topological PnCs (TPnCs). These designs could be promising to overcome the problem of instability involved in most of the theoretical PnC sensors when they emerge in experimental verification. In particular, the fabrication process of any design could collide with some fluctuations in controlling the size of each component. Thus, Fano resonance is introduced through a one-dimensional (1D) quasiperiodic TPnC. To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to observe Fano modes in liquid cavities through 1D PnCs. Various quasiperiodic PnC designs are employed to detect the temperature of alcohols (specifically propanol) across an extensive temperature range (160–240 °C). The effects of many geometrical parameters on the sensor stability, such as material thicknesses, are studied. Numerical findings demonstrated that the designed quasiperiodic topological PnCs based on Fibonacci sequence of the second order proved superior performance. This sensing tool provides sensitivity, quality factor and figure-of-merit values of 104,533.33 Hz/°C, 223.69 and 0.5221 (/°C), respectively, through temperature detection of propanol in the range of 160–240 °C. In open Radio access network (oRAN) 5G networks, a fronthaul segment between virtual Distribution unit (vDU) edge cloud and other external Remote radio units (RRUs) sites is very important to transmit high data rate to achieve 5G requirements. Performance parameters such as Quality factor (Q-factor) and Bit error rate (BER) of an optical fiber fronthaul segment are the main important parameters to enhance latency and bit rate. An Apodized fiber bragg grating (AFBG) is utilized with different apodization profiles to optimize linewidth of an optical signal leading to enhance performance. The designed AFBG is used with a data rate of 25 Gb/s optical Ethernet module at the vDU edge cloud to optimize the linewidth of the optical signal between the vDU and the RRU in the fronthaul optical fiber segment. The AFBG is investigated at different connections pre, post, and symmetrical connections, where different apodization functions are used in the AFBG design. It is found that the best results for the maximum Q-factor and minimum BER are 9.2 and 2.72e− 21, respectively, obtained from uniform function in the symmetrical connection. Background: Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric illness with a considerable risk of alexithymia, and suicide may make this risk worse. This study aimed to assess alexithymia, resilience, and suicidal ideation among patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder. A cross-sectional study was established at the psychiatric outpatient clinic at Zagazig University Hospitals in addition to Abbasyia Hospital for Mental Health in Cairo City. A purposive sample of 140 obsessive–compulsive patients. Five tools were used for data collection, including the socio-demographic questionnaire, the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Resilience Scale, and the Scale for Suicidal Ideation (SSI). Results: The study findings demonstrated that in excess of two-thirds of the studied subjects had mild obsessive–compulsive disorder, slightly more than two-thirds of them suffered from alexithymia, more than half of patients had a moderate level of resilience, and the majority of them had suicidal ideation. Patients' obsessive–compulsive score was a statistically significant positive predictor for suicidal ideation. Conclusions: A positive and significant correlation was found between patients' obsessive–compulsive scores and both alexithymia and suicidal ideation scores. Negatively significant correlations were found between resilience and each patient's obsessive–compulsive score, alexithymia, and suicidal ideation. Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) with its etiology not yet fully understood. Interleukin (IL)-35 is an inhibitory cytokine that belongs to the IL-12 family. Elevated IL-35 in the plasma and the tumor microenvironment increases tumorigenesis and indicates poor prognosis in different types of malignancies. The objective of this study is to estimate the expression levels of IL-35 in tissue and serum of MF patients versus healthy controls. This case-control study included 35 patients with patch, plaque, and tumor MF as well as 30 healthy controls. Patients were fully assessed, and serum samples and lesional skin biopsies were taken prior to starting treatment. The IL-35 levels were measured in both serum and tissue biopsies by ELISA technique. Both tissue and serum IL-35 levels were significantly higher in MF patients than in controls (P < 0.001) and tissue IL-35 was significantly higher than serum IL-35 in MF patients (P < 0.001). Tissue IL-35 was significantly higher in female patients and patients with recurrent MF compared to male patients and those without recurrent disease (P < 0.001). Since both tissue and serum IL-35 levels are increased in MF, IL-35 is suggested to have a possible role in MF pathogenesis. IL-35 can be a useful diagnostic marker for MF. Programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) is an immune checkpoint protein, PD-1 interaction with PD ligand-1 (PD-L1) is essential for maintaining immunological tolerance. The study aimed to study and compare the levels of PD-1 and PD-L1 in lesional and nonlesional skin of lichen planus (LP) patients and compare these levels to normal healthy controls to assess their role in the pathogenesis of LP. This case–control study involved 30 patients with LP and 30 healthy age-and sex-matched controls. After clinical assessment of the severity by LP severity index score (LPSI), skin biopsies were taken from lesional and nonlesional skin of LP patients and from normal skin in healthy controls for assessment of the tissue levels of PD-1 and PD-L1 by ELISA. The tissue levels of both PD-1 and PD-L1 were significantly higher in healthy controls than in both lesional and nonlesional skin of LP patients (P < 0.001). Also, significantly higher PD-l and PD-L1 levels in nonlesional skin than in lesional skin of LP patients were reported (P < 0.001). No significant correlations were found between lesional and nonlesional PD-1, PD-L1 levels, or LPSI score. Based on the fact that PD-1/PD-L1 interaction is important to maintain tolerance and protection against autoimmune diseases, in addition to our study results that revealed lower levels of PD-1/PD-L1 in LP skin than in healthy skin, we can conclude that PD-1/PDL-1 may be incriminated in the pathogenesis of LP. The thermometer digital-to-analog converter (DAC) is a distinctive architecture that plays a vital role in converting digital data into corresponding analog signals, the thermometer DAC employs a resistor network where each bit of the digital input corresponds to a unique resistor. It has notable drawbacks that need careful consideration. As the resolution of the DAC increases, the number of required current sources grows exponentially, leading to complex and demanding circuitry. This can escalate power consumption and occupy significant chip area, which is a critical concern in integrated circuit design. Furthermore, the current mismatch between the multiple current sources. Therefore, integrating memristors into DACs paves the way for more compact and efficient designs, reducing system complexity and enhancing reliability. The Voltage ThrEshold Adaptive Memristor (VTEAM) model of memristor is validated by using Virtuoso. In addition, a digital-to-analog converter based on memristor technology is implemented, taking advantage of the memristor's compact size, minimal power usage, and a voltage threshold that is relatively low. Rutin (Ru) is a flavonol glycoside, has significant scavenging characteristics against various reactive oxygen species, which exploits for widespread pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. This study aims to improve the bioavailability of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) by coating them with Ru (Ru-IONPs). Considering this, IONPs and Ru-IONPs were prepared and characterized via various physical techniques. In addition, atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) has been used to assess the bio-distribution of the prepared formulation in vivo. Results revealed that the prepared IONPs and Ru-IONPs have a spherical shape with an average diameter of about 8 nm and 10 nm, respectively. Their surface potentials were found to be −19 ± 3.9 and −29.5 ± 5.4 mV, respectively. In vivo results revealed that single dose of IV administration of IONPs (16 mg/kg) elevated oxidative stress, indicated by the reduction of GSH in both heart and liver tissues, and increased their MDA contents. Also, IONPs administration resulted in hepatotoxicity characterized by a significant increase in ALT and AST levels in addition to cardiotoxicity characterized by a significant increase in CK-MB and LDH, in addition to the downregulation of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) expression, while upregulation of TNF-α expression in both heart and liver tissues. Conversely, nearly all of these alterations were significantly ameliorated for animal groups administrated Ru-IONPs and the morphological injury's counteraction in both heart and liver tissues. Therefore, we suggest that Ru could be used to alleviate the harmful effects and damages associated with IONPs administration due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and free radical scavenging properties. Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system. Ministry of Health and Population's statistics show that MS comprise 1.4% of all neurological diseases, putting into consideration, current economic crisis; it is needed to predict disease severity with an acceptable cost-effective method. Complete blood count (CBC) parameters are supposed to be cheap, and simple markers for the systemic inflammatory state. This study aims at evaluating role of neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet–lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in predicting the severity of MS. Therefore, this retrospective cohort study was done on 150 MS patients attending MS clinic during year 2022. All patients were subjected to complete medical history. Estimation of the disability was done through the extended disability status scale (EDSS) and analysis of different parameters of baseline CBC before starting therapy. Results: A cutoff value of NLR ≥ 2.95 and PLR ≥ 201.5 could predict prognosis of MS. Risk factors of sever MS are high NLR, PLR, high body mass index and absence of disease-modifying therapy. Conclusions: Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and platelet/lymphocyte ratio are cheap valid useful predictors of increased relapse rate and severity in MS. Highlighting the role of both ratios at time of first diagnosis helps physicians to predict prognosis of patients in context of severity. In the current work, cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanoparticles coated with Tween 80 were successfully synthesized via the chemical reduction method. Nanocomposites composed of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and different ratios of Cu2O nanoparticles were fabricated by the melt mixing process. 10% of ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA) as a compatibilizing agent was added to the molten LDPE matrix and the mixing process continued until homogenous nanocomposites were fabricated. To study the influence of ionizing radiation on the fabricated samples, the prepared species were exposed to 50 and 100 kGy of gamma rays. The synthesized Cu2O nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD and TEM analysis illustrated the successful formation of spherical Cu2O nanoparticles with an average size of 16.8 nm. The as-prepared LDPE/Cu2O nanocomposites were characterized via different techniques such as mechanical, thermal, morphological, XRD, and FTIR. Electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) of the different nanocomposite formulations was performed as a promising application for these materials in practical life. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness (SE) of the produced samples was measured in the X-band of the radio frequency range from 8 to 12 GHz using the vector network analyzer (VNA) and a proper waveguide. All the samples were studied before and after gamma-ray irradiation under the same conditions of pressure and temperature. The shielding effectiveness increased significantly from 25 dB for unirradiated samples to 35 dB with samples irradiated with 100 kGy, which reflects 40% enhancement in the effectiveness of the shielding. Background: Psychiatric comorbidities, and sleep disorders, are prevalent in adults with epilepsy (AWE). Good control of epilepsy can help AWE lead a normal fruitful life and incorporate in daily activities as others. This study aims to assess the frequency, risk factors of depression, and poor sleep quality among patients with epilepsy and examine their relation with epilepsy control. Methods: This cross-sectional study was accomplished during the period from January to October 2023 involving 179 AWE. All were exposed to complete history taking: stressing on personal data, evaluation of medication adherence using the modified Morisky scale, sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and depressive symptoms evaluated by the Zagazig Depression Scale. Results: Depression was reported in 22.2% of studied patients; while 44.4% had poorer epilepsy control. Poor sleep quality was reported in 35.2% of epilepsy patients and was associated with non-adherence and poor seizure control. Depression increased the risk of poor control by about 16-folds. Non-adherence was associated with depression and poor sleep quality and was one of the predictors of poor epilepsy control. Conclusion: Depression and poor sleep quality can impair the outcome of PWE and also there is a strong association between depression and poor sleep quality among PWE and both impair seizure control. Background: Chronic inflammation plays a crucial role in developing various cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a unique condition characterized by the coexistence of cardiovascular and metabolic disturbances, where chronic inflammation may exacerbate disease progression and severity. This study investigated how different hematological inflammatory cells and mediators can serve as predictive indicators of severe OSA. Methods: In a retrospective cohort study, 150 patients suspected of having obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) underwent polysomnography (PSG) to confirm the diagnosis. Based on their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), the patients were categorized into three groups: mild, moderate, and severe OSA. Blood samples were collected for the assessment of inflammatory blood cells and mediators at the time of diagnosis. Results: Among the 150 patients studied, 90 were diagnosed with OSA, and 43 had severe OSA, representing a prevalence rate of 47.7%. Patients with severe OSA were notably older and more likely to have diabetes mellitus and hypertension. After adjusting for age and sex, each one-unit increase in Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI), C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) levels was associated with a doubling in the likelihood of having moderate and severe OSA (p < 0.05 for all). However, hypertension was linked to a 16-fold increase in the likelihood of moderate and severe OSA (p = 0.01). Despite evidence to suggest a relationship between time of year and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) flaring, no studies have been conducted to date to establish a relationship directly between temperature and flaring. In this study, we aim to validate a classification approach based on administrative data for identifying medical encounters that likely represent HS flares in patient with a known diagnosis of HS within the Mass General Brigham Health System (MGB) and examine the relationship between average daily temperatures and HS disease flaring among patients in Boston. This is a retrospective cohort study. Participants were individuals with HS presenting to emergency departments or dermatology outpatient clinics with disease flares between January 2017 and January 2022. The average number of encounters for HS flares was compared with the temperature for that day and the 3- and 7-day periods prior. There were 2567 patient encounters for HS flares included in the study. Of the total identified HS flares, 75.6% occurred in females and 39.1% occurred in patients who identified as Black. Uniformly small but statistically significant relationships were noted between increased temperature and presentations for hidradenitis suppurativa flare with the highest correlation coefficient (0.0768) noted with a 3-day lag time between the heat experienced and day of presentation for flare. Increased temperature is associated with a small, but statistically significant increase in HS disease flaring. As such, HS disease flaring may rise as global temperatures do, suggesting an increase in the global burden of HS as climate change persists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Raman amplifiers (RAs) can be represented as one of the best solutions for transmission techniques, where they can compensate attenuation and transmit the optical signal to long-haul distances. This work proposes and investigates two cascaded models (multi-stages of RAs) for enhancing the received power and the overall gain. This study includes three fiber types: Dispersion Shifted Fiber, Truewave and Freelight fibers at 100 km distance and pumping powers of 500, 600 and 700 mW. The obtained results reveal that the best results gain is 46.46 dB and the power of output signal is 42.47 dBm achieved at 700 mW pump power with Truewave fiber. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory, autoimmune disease that could be disabling throughout its course. It affects people in their most reproductive years with relatively high morbidity and mortality. Long non-coding RNAs became one of the epigenetic mechanisms to prove a link to RA pathogenesis and development, including H19 and MALAT1 genes. These two genes' expressions had proved to increase in multiple diseases, attracting attention to their polymorphisms and their possible risk role. Assess the association between H19 SNP (rs2251375) and MALAT1 SNP (rs3200401) and the susceptibility of RA and its disease activity. In this pilot study, 200 hundred subjects (100 RA patients and 100 healthy controls) were investigated for a possible link between the polymorphisms H19 SNP (rs2251375) and MALAT1 SNP (3200401) and RA susceptibility and disease activity. RA-related investigations and clinical assessment were done. Real-time PCR genotyping of both SNPs was done using TaqMan® MGB probes. There was no association between the SNPs and risk of developing RA. However, both SNPs had a significant association with high disease activity. H19 SNP (rs2251375) heterozygous genotype CA had an association with elevated levels of ESR (p = 0.04) and higher DAS28-ESR score (p = 0.03). MALAT1 (rs3200401) C allele had an association with elevated ESR (p = 0.001), DAS28-ESR (p = 0.03), and DAS28-CRP (p = 0.007), while CC genotype had an association with DAS28-CRP (p = 0.015). Linkage disequilibrium and haplotyping of the alleles of both SNPs were analyzed as both genes are present on chromosome 11, but no significant association was found between any of the combinations of the alleles (p > 0.05), denoting that (rs2251375) and (rs3200401) are not in linkage disequilibrium. There is no association between H19 SNP (rs2251375) and MALAT1 SNP (rs3200401) and the susceptibility of RA. Detecting of the levels of greenhouse gases in the air with high precision and low cost is a very urgent demand for environmental protection. Phononic crystals (PnCs) represent a novel sensor technology, particularly for high-performance sensing applications. This study has been conducted by using two PnC designs (periodic and quasi-periodic) to detect the CO2 pollution in the surrounding air through a wide range of concentrations (0–100%) and temperatures (0–180 °C). The detection process is physically dependent on the displacement of Fano resonance modes. The performance of the sensor is demonstrated for the periodic and Fibonacci quasi-periodic (S3 and S4 sequences) structures. In this regard, the numerical findings revealed that the periodic PnC provides a better performance than the quasi-periodic one with a sensitivity of 31.5 MHz, the quality factor (Q), along with a figure of merit (FOM) of 280 and 95, respectively. In addition, the temperature effects on the Fano resonance mode position were examined. The results showed a pronounced temperature sensitivity with a value of 13.4 MHz/°C through a temperature range of 0–60 °C. The transfer matrix approach has been utilized for modeling the acoustic wave propagation through each PnC design. Excessive usage of chemical fertilizers has detrimental effects on the environment and the safety of food. Conversely, utilizing organic fertilizers such as sage offers several advantages, including cost-effectiveness, soil enhancement, and promotion of root development. A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of different potassium fertilizer sources and biofertilizers (specifically Bacillus cereus (MBc)) on potato plants. The experiment employed a split-plot design with three replicates, where the main plot factor was MBc (with and without), and the subplot factor was the sources of potassium fertilizer (control without K fertilizer, 100% Feldspar (FD), 100% Filter cake (FC), 75% FD + 25% FC, 25% FD + 75% FC, and 50% FD + 50% FC). The purpose was to examine the growth response of potato plants to these treatments. The results indicated that all treatments increased plant height, stem count, and tuber dry matter compared to the control. Furthermore, all treatments exhibited a higher uptake of macronutrients (N, P, and K) compared to the control. Notably, the plants treated with 100FC combined with MBc showed a significant 104.74% increase in total tuber weight compared to the control treatment. Additionally, the addition of 100FC with MBc significantly enhanced the availability of N, P, and K by 73.13%, 110.33%, and 51.88% respectively, compared to the control treatment. Apart from the biofertilizers, the individual application of FC and its combination with FD also demonstrated positive effects on soil fertility, potato growth, and yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Myocardial fibrosis has recently been proposed as one of the contributing factors to the diverse pathogenicity of cardiomyopathy in sickle cell disease. Objective: In this study, cardiac fibrosis and subclinical cardiac changes in children with sickle cell disease were evaluated using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), tissue Doppler echocardiography and serum galectin-3. Materials and methods: The study included 34 children with sickle cell disease who were compared with a similar number of healthy controls. Cardiac MRI was used to evaluate late gadolinium enhancement, native T1 mapping, extracellular volume, and T2* for estimation of iron load. Cardiac function and myocardial performance index (MPI, evaluated by tissue Doppler echocardiography) and serum galectin-3 were compared to controls. Results: The mean age of the included patients was 13.3 ± 3.2 years. Myocardial iron load by T2* was normal. The mean level of extracellular volume (35.41 ± 5.02%) was significantly associated with the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises (P = 0.017) and negatively correlated with hemoglobin levels (P = 0.005). Galectin-3 levels were significantly higher among cases than controls (P = 0.00), at a cutoff value on the receiver operating characteristic curve of 6.5 ng/ml, sensitivity of 82.5% and specificity of 72.8%. The extracellular volume was significantly higher in cases, with a MPI > 0.4. Conclusion: Diffuse interstitial myocardial fibrosis can be detected early in children with sickle cell disease using T1 mapping and is associated with a high frequency of vaso-occlusive crisis. Background: Lumbar radicular pain (LRP) is one of the most encountered complaints in neurosurgical practice that pose a challenge in its management as adequate pain control, which is not always achieved. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of pulsed radiofrequency as a minimally invasive tool in the management of lumbar radicular pain of lumbar discogenic origin. Methods: This is a prospective study that included 20 patients with lumbar radicular pain with radiological evidence of lumbar disc prolapse, who have been subjected to pulsed radiofrequency. Results: The mean preoperative visual analogue score was 71 ± 14.38 dropped to a mean of 43.5 ± 21.47 at six-month follow-up. Seventy percentage of the study population had a satisfactory outcome, which did not correlate with the age, sex, or body mass index of the patients. Purpose: The purpose of the study was the clinical evaluation of the capsular management with arthroscopic treatment of femoroacetabular impingement and labral tears by comparing the functional outcomes of closed versus open capsule. Methods: Patients with a median age of 38 years (18–55), clinical and radiological features of FAI and/or labral tear, and non-arthritic non-dysplastic hips were selected for arthroscopic treatment. Capsulotomy was performed primarily as an interportal section, then a distal extension preserving the zona orbicularis was added. The study compared two matched groups: patients with open capsule versus patients with closed capsule. Clinical outcomes were assessed by Non-Arthritic Hip Score, hip outcome scores of daily living activities and sports-specific scales. Scores were collected preoperatively and 6 months, 2 years and 5 years postoperatively. Rate of revision arthroscopy and conversion to total hip arthroplasty were used for comparing groups. Minimal clinically important differences were calculated for both groups. Results: The study included 42 patients in the OC group and 44 patients in the CC group. Significant improvement of postoperative PROMs was recorded in both groups compared to preoperative scores. CC group significantly improved more than the OC group based on NAHS, HOS-ADL and HOS-SSS over all check points except for NAHS and HOS-ADL at 6 months, which were statistically non-significant. A non-significant difference was observed in the percentage of patients who met the MCID for all reported outcome scores at 5 years in both groups. The rate of reoperation was similar in both groups, but with different indications. Conclusion: Arthroscopic treatment of FAI and labral repair with complete closure of the hip capsule led to significantly improved functional outcomes after 5 years follow-up compared with open capsule. Closed capsule can provide greater improvement in the sports-specific outcomes at early follow-up. Controlled capsulotomy limited by zona orbicularis did not produce instability at any postoperative stage. Background: Self-stigma develops when people with mental disorders start to accept and apply the stigma that the wider public has towards these disorders. People suffering from mental disorders are one of the most groups prone to stigmatization others, making them more likely to experience internalized stigma. Studies done in Europe found that people with schizophrenia had greater internalized stigma than those with mood disorders. Self-stigma has been linked negatively to the individual's self-esteem, coping, and other outcomes. The aim of this research was to compare young patients with bipolar disorder to those with schizophrenia as regards self-stigma and various coping mechanisms. Additionally, this study sought to evaluate the association between coping mechanisms and self-stigma in young people with schizophrenia and those with bipolar disorder. The ISMI scale and the BRIEF-COPE inventory were used to assess self-stigma and coping strategies respectively. Results: The mean ISMI total score was significantly higher in the schizophrenia group than in the bipolar disorder group (p < 0.001). The latter group showed a statistically significant higher mean total adaptive score than the schizophrenia group (p = 0.03). A significant positive correlation was found between the total maladaptive score of the BRIEF-COPE inventory and the ISMI scale total score (p < 0.001) in both groups. Conclusions: Youth with schizophrenia experience more self-stigma than those with bipolar disorder, with the former using more maladaptive coping styles. Detecting of the levels of greenhouse gases in the air with high precision and low cost is a very urgent demand for environmental protection. Phononic crystals (PnCs) represent a novel sensor technology, particularly for high-performance sensing applications. This study has been conducted by using two PnC designs (periodic and quasi-periodic) to detect the CO2 pollution in the surrounding air through a wide range of concentrations (0–100%) and temperatures (0–180 °C). The detection process is physically dependent on the displacement of Fano resonance modes. The performance of the sensor is demonstrated for the periodic and Fibonacci quasi-periodic (S3 and S4 sequences) structures. In this regard, the numerical findings revealed that the periodic PnC provides a better performance than the quasi-periodic one with a sensitivity of 31.5 MHz, the quality factor (Q), along with a figure of merit (FOM) of 280 and 95, respectively. In addition, the temperature effects on the Fano resonance mode position were examined. The results showed a pronounced temperature sensitivity with a value of 13.4 MHz/°C through a temperature range of 0–60 °C. The transfer matrix approach has been utilized for modeling the acoustic wave propagation through each PnC design. The backward Raman amplifier (RA) can considered as one of the best solutions for optical communication, especially in Wavelength Division Multiplexing technology. They reduce the nonlinear effects, have low noise figure and a wide frequency range. The work in this paper aims to reduce the attenuation of optical signal due to its propagation optical fiber and increase both amplifier gain and output signal power. Two backward Raman models are proposed. Proposal one model consists of two cascaded RAs and the other (proposal two) consists of three cascaded RAs. Three backward pump power levels 200, 400, and 600 mW are used to simulate the models with the three types of fibers: single-mode fiber, Truewave, and Freelight, at an amplifier length of 100 km. Proposal two achieves a maximum gain of 31 dB at 600 mW pump power 600 mW using Truewave optical fiber, with 27.7 dBm maximum output signal power. Nutritional yeast-produced soy yogurt has grown in demand, because of its unique nutritional and health benefits. It has low cholesterol, no lactose, and high levels of protein, probiotic yeast, vitamins, and minerals. In this work, Soymilk (12.5%) was prepared and fermented to produce soy yogurt. Growth curves, probiotic characteristics of Saccharomyces boulardii CNCMI-745 and Lactobacillus plantarum KU985432 were determined. The nutritional value of both yogurts was evaluated, including viable cell count, protein, vitamin B-complex, sugars, phenolic acids, and fatty acids, mineral content, stability, and storage. Analysis of the physicochemical composition of the yogurts included assessment of titratable acidity, antioxidant potential, viscosity, and moisture content. The probiotic viable count of the produced yogurts met the standards for commercial yogurts. S. boulardii CNCMI-745 displayed safety characteristics and high tolerance to heat, acid, and alkaline stress. The produced B vitamins increased in both yogurts. The total saturated fatty acids in Saccharomyces-yogurt decreased, while the unsaturated fatty acids increased. Saccharomyces-yogurt showed high antioxidant activity, phenolic acids, and crude protein content. Both yogurts demonstrated the same tendency for stability during 16 day-storage. The current study attempted to evaluate the impact of drilling parameters and delamination on the bearing strength of both neat GFRP (NG) and hybrid GFRP/aluminum (Al)-wire mesh with two various configurations, first with Al-mesh in the outer surface of specimen (AG) and the other with Al-mesh in the core of specimen (GA). Drilling procedure is carried out using ∅ 6 mm carbide twist drill with three different tip angles (90°, 120° and 135°), as well as Three different speeds and feeds (1000, 2000, and 3000 rpm) and (20, 40, and 60 mm/min), respectively. Taguchi and ANOVA analyses are used to analyze the influence of processing parameters. The findings showed that AG specimen experienced the least delamination damage. The maximum bearing strength refers to NG specimen, which is 9.6% and 8.7% more than AG and GA specimens, respectively. Drill point angle has the major effect on bearing strength for both AG and GA specimens, while for NG feed rate is of the major effect. Protective oxide layers on Ti-6Al-3Mo-2Nb-2Sn-2Zr-1.5Cr (TC21) alloy with equiaxed microstructure considerably influence micro-hardness and hot corrosion resistance. The present work's thermal oxidation of TC21 alloy was performed at 600, 700, and 800 °C for 5, 20, and 50 h durations. Hot corrosion methods in NaCl and NaCl + Na2SO4 salt media were applied to raw (unoxidized) and oxidized samples at 600 and 800 °C for 50 h. Hot corrosion was conducted at 600 °C for 5 cycles with 10-h steps. The best oxide layer thickness was observed at 800 °C, which increased with increased oxidation time and temperature. The surface hardness of the oxide layer at 800 °C was 900 ± 60 HV0.05 owing to the formation of TiO2 and Al2O3 phases. Raw material hardness was 342 ± 20 HV0.05, increasing threefold due to thermal oxidation. In the case of NaCl, weight loss dominated all samples except at 800 °C for 5 h. In the case of NaCl + Na2SO4, weight gain occurred at 600 and 800 °C for 5 h. Weight loss occurred for the raw samples and those processed at 800 °C for 20 and 50 h, where the oxide layer flaked off. Surface hardness increased upon hot corrosion testing because of the formation of brittle phases, such as TiO2 and Na4Ti5O12. Lower back pain is a universal dilemma leaving a negative effect on both health and life quality. It was found that a fixed dose combination of chlorzoxazone and ibuprofen gave a higher efficiency than analgesic alone in treatment of acute lower back pain. Based on the significant benefit of that combination, a green, sensitive, rapid, direct, and cost-effective method is created for concurrent determination of ibuprofen and chlorzoxazone in presence of 2-amino para chlorophenol (a synthetic precursor and potential impurity of chlorzoxazone) adopting the synchronous spectrofluorimetric technique. Synchronous spectrofluorimetric technique is adopted to avoid the highly overlapped native spectra of both drugs. The synchronous spectrofluorometric method was applied at Δλ = 50 nm, ibuprofen was measured at 227 nm while chlorzoxazone was measured at 282 nm with no hindering from one to another. The various experimental variables affecting the performance of the suggested technique were explored and adjusted. The suggested technique showed good linearity from 0.02 to 0.6 and 0.1 to 5.0 µg/mL for ibuprofen and chlorzoxazone, respectively. The produced detection limits were 0.27 × 10–3 and 0.03, while the quantitation limits were 0.82 × 10–3 and 0.09 µg/mL for ibuprofen and chlorzoxazone, respectively. The suggested approach was successfully applied for the analysis of the studied drugs in the synthetic mixture, different pharmaceutical preparations, and spiked human plasma. The suggested technique was validated with respect to the International Council of Harmonization (ICH) recommendations. The suggested technique was found to be simpler and greener with lower cost compared to the earlier reported methods which required complicated techniques, longer time of analysis, and less safe solvents and reagents. Green profile assessment for the developed method compared with the reported spectrofluorometric method was performed using four assessment tools. These tools confirmed that the recommended technique attained the most possible green parameters, so it could be used as a greener option in routine quality control for analyzing the two drugs in genuine form and pharmaceutical preparations. Background: Hearing loss and cognitive impairment are postoperative complications which need more awareness by anaesthesiologists. We set out to investigate whether sevoflurane or propofol would have a negative impact on auditory function, attention, or auditory memory. This is a prospective randomized controlled study which was conducted on patients who were candidates for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia with either the sevoflurane or the propofol. All included participants were subjected to cognitive and auditory evaluation preoperative and 1 week after the operation. Cognitive assessment included: Paired Associate Learning test (PALT) and Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT). Audiological assessment was done by measuring the auditory brainstem response (ABR). Results: There was no statistically significant difference between both groups in either age (p value = 0.537) or sex (p value = 0.175). In the propofol group, the postoperative values of LT ABR-I and III were significantly higher than the preoperative ones (p value < 0.001, 0.003), all the postoperative RT ABR waves were significantly higher than the preoperative ones (P < 0.05). In the sevoflurane group, the postoperative values for LTABR-I, III, III–V were significantly higher than the preoperative ones with p value (0.012, 0.008 and 0.009) and the postoperative values for RTABR-III, V, I–III, and III–V were significantly higher than preoperative values (P = 0.041, 0.029, 0.005 and < 0.001). There were no statistically significant differences between the propofol and sevoflurane groups in all waves of ABR on both sides (P > 0.05). There was a significant worsening between pre- and postoperative PASAT scores in the propofol and sevoflurane groups, respectively, with p value (< 0.001) with no statistically significant difference between both groups (p value = 0.906). In addition, there was a significant worsening between pre- and postoperative PALT scores in the propofol group only (p value = 0.01) with a statistically significant difference between both groups (p value = 0.038). Conclusions: There was a statistically significant postoperative impairment in auditory function and attention following both the propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia with no significant difference between the two drugs. Background: Migraine attacks are reported to be severe enough to affect daily living events and can affect different age groups including early childhood. Chronic migraine is usually associated with several comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia, and fatigue. The existence of a bidirectional relationship between sleep and migraine is documented. This study aims at assessing the relationship between serum melatonin, sleep quality, and both migraine and migraine severity. This case–control study was executed on 70 patients and 70 healthy controls. Serum melatonin was assessed in morning and evening blood samples. Patients underwent a thorough clinical examination, assessing migraine severity using the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale and the sleep quality of both groups was evaluated using the sleep quality scale. Results: Serum melatonin levels were significantly reduced among migraine patients in both morning and evening samples. Sleep quality was significantly impaired in migraine patients. There is a statistically significant negative correlation between melatonin in both samples and both of frequency of attack and migraine disability. Positive family history, presence of aura and chronic migraine had significantly lower melatonin in both samples compared to those without aura was associated with significantly lower melatonin. Sleep quality was negatively correlated with serum melatonin, and positively correlated with migraine severity and frequency. Conclusion: Serum melatonin is significantly reduced among migraineurs, and linked to migraine severity; they also had impaired sleep quality so melatonin administration may represent a chance for improving headache characteristics. In some governorates of Egypt, the African migratory locust L. migratoria migratorioides is in a gregarious phase. Swarm development was successfully prevented by biological control agents. In this work, the two entomopathogenic nematode species, Steinernema sp. (SII)and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora (HP88) were investigated as natural enemies against the fifth nymph and adult African locusts at various concentrations (300, 600, 900, 1200, and 1500 Infected juveniles/100 g. soil). To ascertain fatal activity at 25 °C, the nematode-inoculated sand method was used. The two nematode species were semi-field administered against fifth nymphs and adult stages at (25 ± 2 °C) and 55–60% relative humidity with concentrations (3000, 6000, 9000, 12000, and 15000 Infected juveniles/kg. soil). Protease, amylase, invertase, and trehalase levels in the digestive enzymes of both fifth nymphs and adults fed with LC50 of both nematodes significantly decreased, but lipase and chitinase levels significantly increased. Adult locusts treated with the LC50 of S. sp. SII had basophilic epithelial cells, severe lumen hemorrhage, and highly aberrant proliferating cytoplasm, whereas the LC50 of H. bacteriophora HP88 displayed necrosis in an epithelial cell with vacuoles, loss of nucleus, and loss of goblet cells. Seismic structural fuses such as buckling restrained braces (BRBs) are highly nonlinear members that need a detailed finite element model (FEM) to represent their actual behavior. On the other hand, making detailed model for the whole building from solid or shell elements to be consistent with the model of BRBs would require expensive computational time and large storage space especially when performing nonlinear time history analysis (NTHA). Therefore, a mixed FEM is developed in this research so that the solid elements are used for the core plate and the restraining system only. The non-yielding segments of the BRBs and the conjoined girders and columns are simulated using beam elements with nonlinear material properties while the effect of large deformations is taken during analysis and this was able to represent plastic hinge formation, plastic rotations and residual displacements in such members. A beam-solid transfer mechanism is developed to properly transfer forces between the non-yielding segments of BRB and the inner solid plate. The core plate is connected to the surrounding restraining system with contact elements to simulate the normal and frictional forces generated upon contact based on the penalty algorithm. This model was validated using the data and the results of an experimental work mentioned in the literature where very good agreement was achieved. Thereafter, a rehabilitation study for the SAC 9-storey building was performed. Objectives: To compare the efficacy and clinical outcomes of two different stone localization modalities (fluoroscopic or ultrasonic) in SWL treatment of pediatric renal stones. Patients and methods: This study was conducted in the period between January 2021 and June 2022 and included 100 children aged 2–16 years who presented with radio-opaque renal pelvic stones < 20 mm. The children were divided in two groups: group I, US-guided (50 patients), and group II, FS-guided SWL (50 patients). SWL was applied under general anesthesia. The follow-up of the patients included a visit every two weeks up to three months. Results: Even though group II's stone-free rate after one month of follow-up was higher than group I's (90% vs. 84%), no statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p = 0.749). While the success rate was higher in group II than in group I (92% vs. 86%), no statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups (p = 0.338). The complication rate was 28% (14 patients) and 12% (6 patients) in Groups I and II, respectively. However, no significant difference was found between the two groups (p = 0.132). Conclusions: SWL is a non-invasive and safe method for treating pediatric renal stones. We recommend the use of the ultrasonic focusing modality in SWL of the pediatric age group, which has similar success rates, avoiding radiation and low complication rate instead of the fluoroscopic focusing modality, which uses ionizing radiation during SWL. Background: Biological control of insect pests is an economic, eco-friendly and harmless approach to integrated pest management strategies. Bracon hebetor (Say) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) considers a polyphagous ectoparasitoid of various pests of the order Lepidoptera. The parasitized host insects' defense mechanisms are triggered as a result of the parasitic wasps' injury and penetration. Thus, induce the host cellular and humoral immune responses through a blend of secretions injected into the host body. The present study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of B. hebetor on the immune response of the parasitized full grown larval instar of the rice moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) under natural envenomation. Results: On cellular level, the ultrastructure examination of the hemocytes displayed a considerable structural deformation in hemocyte morphology of the detected types of the hemocytes. Moreover, the effects of parasitism on both differential hemocyte counts (DHCs) and total hemocyte counts (THCs) were investigated. The number of prohemocytes (PR) (40.33 ± 5.61, 43 ± 8.33 and 26 ± 2.31) was statistically differed after (24, 48 and 72 h) of parasitism, respectively, compared to unparasitized (31.33 ± 6.49) larvae. Similar observations were recorded in plasmatocytes (PL) before and after the parasitism. However, Spherulocytes (SP) and Oenocytoids (OE) were recorded in the hemolymph with little abundance. On the other side, the quantitative analysis of total hemolymph proteins (THP) provoked a significant effect of considering parasitized and non-parasitized larvae. As the Phenoloxidase (PO) cascade plays a critical role in immune defenses, so the substantial activation of PO in the host's hemolymph following successive hours of parasitism compared to unparasitized larvae using L-DOPA as a substrate indicated the induction of larval immune system. The parasitized larvae showed a gradual increase in the PO activity (0.442 ± 0.103) after 24 h reached up to (1.482 ± 0.272) at the end of parasitism (72 h) in comparable to unparasitized larvae (0.177 ± 0.0.044). Conclusion: The present investigations clarified the efficacy of B. hebetor parasitism on the host immune mechanism, which will enable the progress of sustainable stored product protection approaches for the control of an important pest rice moth C. cephalonica. Anisakidosis is a foodborne zoonotic infection induced by members of the family Anisakidae via the consumption of raw or undercooked fish such as sushi and sashimi. Identifying anisakid larval species is critical for the epidemiology and diagnosis of diseases caused by them. This study aimed at identifying Anisakis larvae collected from marine fish in Egyptian waters based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis. Thirty marine fish coral trout, Plectropomus areolatus, were collected from Hurghada, Red Sea, Egypt, to investigate larval nematodes of the genus Anisakis. The larvae were detected encapsulated in the peritoneal cavity and muscle of the fish host. This examination revealed that anisakid larvae naturally infected 19 fish specimens with a prevalence of 63.33% and a mean intensity of 4.1 ± 0.40. Most of them (68 larvae: 71.57%) were found in the musculature. Morphological and morphometric analyses using light and scanning electron microscopy revealed a head region with a prominent boring tooth, inconspicuous lips, and a characteristic protruded cylindrical mucron. All larvae in this study possessed the same morphology as Anisakis Larval type I. Molecular analysis based on ITS region using maximum likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic methods confirmed them as Anisakis typica. The main objective of this study was the preparation and evaluation of the primary reagents for the liquid phase human chorionic gonadotropin-radioimmunoassay (HCG-RIA) kit. Polyclonal antibody is specific and valid; monoclonal antibodies are more specific. In HCG-RIA technique, polyclonal antibodies for βHCG subunits with high binding and displacement % were used. 125I-HCG radioactive tracer was prepared with high yield 71.58 ± 0.92%, purity 99.2 ± 0.05%, and specific activity 170.42 ± 1.65 µCi/µg using chloramine T method, βHCG polyclonal antisera and HCG standards in assay buffer matrix were locally prepared. In-house HCG-RIA was developed with high sensitivity 0.5 mIU/ml, specificity (99%), precision (CV% < 6.4 and < 8.3 for intra-and inter-assay, respectively), and accuracy (recovery range 96.4–104.3%) could be used for quantitative estimation of HCG in human sera for monitoring pregnancy and diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic diseases. Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Nanoparticles allow early detection of tumor and delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the specific tumor site. This study aimed to assess the therapeutic role of dumbbell-like nanoparticles conjugated with monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against both vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and cluster of differentiation (CD) 90 (a cancer stem cell marker) in hepatocellular carcinoma experimental model. This study included 100 mice; HCC was induced chemically in 80 male Balb/c mice by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and 20 mice served as normal control group. Mice were divided into four groups; pathological control group, mAbs-conjugated nanoparticles-treated group, nanoparticles (alone)-treated group and Avastin-treated group. Animals were sacrificed after one and two months of treatment for assessment of HCC response to treatment. Serum samples were collected and analyzed for alfa-feto protein (AFP), Caspase-3, VEGF-A by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique and alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) by automated analyzer. Liver sections of sacrificed animals were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) for histopathological assessment. Results: There were highly significant and significant differences (p value < 0.1 and < 0.5) between mAbs-conjugated nanoparticles-treated group and Avastin group, respectively, in comparison to pathological group. Both groups showed a significant decrease in all serum parameters, but mAbs-conjugated nanoparticles-treated group had more potent improvement effect when compared with Avastin group. MAbs-conjugated nanoparticles-treated group also showed the best improvement in liver architecture. Conclusion: Dumbbell-like nanoparticles conjugated to anti-CD90 and Avastin is a novel therapeutic tool for HCC to target cancer stem cells and endothelial cells in the niche of the tumor. Both gallic and citrate are well-established antioxidants that show promise as new selective anti-cancer drugs. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as well can be developed as flexible and nontoxic nano-carriers for anti-cancer drugs. This article evaluating the efficiency and biocompatibility of gallic acid and citrate capping gold nanoparticles to be used as anti-cancer drug. The biosafety and therapeutic efficiency of prepared nano-formulations were tested on Hela and normal BHK cell line. Gold nanospheres coated with citrate and gallate were synthesized via wet chemical reduction method. The prepared nano-formulations, citrate and gallate coated gold nanospheres (Cit-AuNPs and Ga-AuNPs), were characterized with respect to their morphology, FTIR spectra, and physical properties. In addition, to assess their cytotoxicity, cell cycle arrest and flow cytometry to measure biological response were performed. Cit-Au NPs and Ga-Au NPs were shown to significantly reduce the viability of Hela cancer cells. Both G0/G cell cycle arrest and comet assay results showed that genotoxic effect was induced in Hela cells by Cit-Au NPs and Ga-Au NPs. The Ketogenic Diet (KD) is gaining attention as a management line in childhood drug resistant epilepsy (DRE). The objective of this study was to highlight KD benefits for Ain Shams University (ASU) Children's Hospital patients. This cross-sectional study included all patients at the Ketoclinic of ASU Children's Hospital since it started. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory data were recorded. Chalfont severity score and daily frequency of epileptic attacks were used to evaluate KD efficacy. Vineland test was used to demonstrate the adaptive behavior of a selected group of patients. ASU Children's Hospital Ketoclinic records included 143 patients. During KD therapy, the weight and height/length assessment showed significant increase with significant decrease in the severity of seizures and its frequency. There were no significant changes in the lipid profile of the patients. Vineland test showed significant improvement in the adaptive behavior in 65% of patients. The Ketoclinic data proves that KD is a tolerable, safe, and effective line of therapy for DRE in children without significant negative impact on their anthropometric measurements or lipid profile. Furthermore, the enhancement in adaptive behavior is a promising finding. Aims: The present study focused on identifying the current prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in rural desert and rural agricultural areas of Egypt and comparing these findings to those of previous studies that reported lower prevalence rates of DM in rural desert versus rural agricultural areas. Methods: The study included a total of 15,000 participants aged 20 years or older; 10,000 were from rural agricultural areas and 5000 were from rural desert areas in Egypt. The prevalence of DM and impaired fasting glucose for each group was recorded, participants were interviewed, medical history was obtained, physical examinations were performed, and fasting plasma glucose was used for diagnosis of DM and IFG using American Diabetes Association criteria. Results: The prevalence of DM was 12.7% in agricultural areas and 4.7% in desert areas. The prevalence of newly diagnosed cases was 15.8% and 9.9% in agricultural and desert areas, respectively. The prevalence of IFG was 11.14% in agricultural and 8.04% in desert areas. These results suggest that living in a rural area makes patients at a higher risk of developing DM (OR = 2.968 CI (2.570–3.428) p < 0.001) and IFG (OR = 1.43, CI (1.272–1.616), p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that increased age, living in agricultural areas, higher body mass index and positive family history of diabetes were the significant predictors affecting the prevalence of DM. Conclusions: The prevalence of DM, IFG, and overall dysglycemia (DM + IFG) in Egypt has generally increased in rural areas, with a lower prevalence in rural desert compared to rural agricultural areas. An optimization approach based on full factorial design was employed for developing an HPLC–UV method for simultaneous determination of a quaternary mixture used for the treatment of symptoms related to common cold and COVID-19. The quaternary mixture is composed of paracetamol, levocetirizine dihydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride and ambroxol hydrochloride. The developed technique is a green, fast and simple method that uses isocratic elution of mobile phase consisting of 20:5:75 (v/v) of ethanol: acetonitrile: 2.5 mM heptane-1-sulphonic acid sodium salt at pH 6.5 ± 0.02. The chromatographic separation was carried out using Hypersil BDS Cyano LC Column (250 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm) with 230 nm UV detection and 1.0 mL/min. flow rate. Avoiding the routine methodology and resorting to the modern technology—represented in the usage of experimental design—allows rapid determination of the four drugs using the optimum quantity of chemicals to avoid any waste of resources. The quaternary mixture was eluted in less than 9 min., where retention times of paracetamol, levocetirizine dihydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride and ambroxol hydrochloride were found to be 2.2, 3.8, 6.6 and 8.8 min., respectively. The calibration graphs of the four drugs were linear over concentration ranges of 50.0–500.0, 0.5–20.0, 0.5–20.0 and 0.5–100.0 µg/mL for paracetamol, levocetirizine dihydrochloride, phenylephrine hydrochloride and ambroxol hydrochloride, respectively with correlation coefficients higher than 0.999. The method is accurate with mean recoveries between 99.87 and 100.04%, precise, as %RSD for the intraday and interday precision were between 0.61 and 1.64% and very sensitive with limit of detections (LOD)'s between 29 and 147 ng/mL and limit of quantification (LOQ)'s between 95 and 485 ng/mL. The proposed method was successfully applied for the analysis of the four drugs either in raw materials or in prepared tablet with the least amount of chemicals within short time. It is also validated following International Conference on Harmonization Guidelines. The proposed method was found to be green according to the most common greenness assessment tools; NEMI, GAPI, Analytical Eco-Scale and AGREE methods. The aim of this work is to propose a model for enhancing chromatic dispersion compensation in standard single mode optical fibers (SSMFs). The proposed model consists of a single stage Apodized Uniform Fiber Bragg Gratings (AUFBG) in a post-compensation scheme. It is based on the Maximum Time Division Multiplexing (MTDM) technique. The performance of the proposed model is evaluated through the quality factor (Q-factor) and Bit Error Rate (BER) in four cases, in a comparative study. In case one, the system performance is evaluated without using UFBG. The other cases study the effect of the proposed model with using different connections schemes and the most common apodization functions. For simulation, the proposed model is connected in a 10 Gbps WDM 70 km link under ordinary operating parameters. The simulation and evaluation process is conducted by Optisystem 7.0. In the pre-compensation scheme, the best results are obtained as a maximum Q-factor of 9.2 and a minimum BER of 3.25 × 10–20, using a tanh apodization function. This study focuses on compensating chromatic dispersion affecting the propagated signal in a standard single mode optical fibers (SSMFs). We propose a model that consists of an identical four stages cascaded linear chirped apodized fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs) in a post-compensation scheme under Maximum Time Division Multiplexing (MTDM) technique. MTDM is free of the limitations resulting from the fiber nonlinear effects. It, thus, effectively utilizes optical wavelength and operating in various network of different distances and capacities. Therefore, MTDM is designed to be used in the high-capacity and high-speed transmission systems. The evaluation of the proposed model performance is performed through a comparative study using different connections and the most common apodization functions. This comparative study includes three cases based on the used connection scheme. A 10 Gbps Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) 70 km link is simulated under ordinary operating parameters. Optisystem 7.0 is used for the simulation and evaluation process, in terms of two metrics which are quality factor (Q-factor) and bit error rate (BER). In the pre-compensation scheme, the highest results are: Q-factor = 7.664 and BER = 8.99 × 10–15, using the raised cosine apodization function. Using the raised sine apodization in the post-compensation connection realizes the best performance: Q-factor = 8.58 and BER = 4.77 × 10–18. In the symmetrical-compensation scheme and using the raised sine apodization, the proposed model attains the highest Results: Q-factor = 7.49 and BER = 3.53 × 10–14. In this paper, we propose a dispersion compensation model to minimize the chromatic dispersion to enhance system performance. The proposed model is based on applying the duobinary modulation scheme on 4-stages of cascaded identical apodized uniform fiber Bragg grating. Different apodization functions are tested to determine the one that provides the best performance. The proposed model is connected in three different connection schemes: pre, post and symmetrical, to get the best connection. To evaluate the performance of the proposed system, a comparative study is conducted using non-return to zero (NRZ) and modified duobinary (MDB) modulation schemes. For evaluation, a 10 Gbps WDM link is simulated at a distance of 100 km under a set of predefined operating parameters. Optisystem 17.0 is used for simulation and evaluation. Both quality factor (Q-factor) and bit error rate (BER) are used as performance indices. All cases of NRZ modulation scheme do not meet the minimum operational requirements in terms of Q-factor and BER. Only in the case of MDB modulation scheme, the symmetrical compensation with tanh apodization meets the minimum operational requirements with a Q-factor of 6.39 and BER of 8.44 × 10–11. The proposed model achieves better results as compared to the other modulation schemes: a maximum Q-factor values of 8.964 and a BER of 1.3 × 10–19 with tanh apodization in the pre-compensation scheme. In this paper, we present a tanh apodized FBG as a dispersion compensator in optical fiber communication systems. This grating is integrated as a hybrid system of four cascaded apodized FBGs with soliton transmission technique. This enhances the linewidth of the light source to get the most out of transmission per-channel bit rate of 9.687 Tbps at a temperature of 20 °C, a relative refractive index difference of 0.002, a Germania doping ratio of 0.2, and a signal wavelength of 1.65 µm. In the current study on TC21 Ti-alloy (6.5Al–3Mo–1.9Nb–2.2Sn–2.2Zr–1.5Cr), the thermal oxidation formed oxide layers that considerably influenced mechanical properties (hardness and wear). TC21 specimens were oxidized at 600, 700, 800, and 900 °C for 5, 20, and 50 h. NaCl-induced hot corrosion testing was carried out on raw (un-oxidized) and oxidized specimens at 600 and 800 °C for 50 h. The cyclic testing was performed at 600 °C for durations of 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 h. The average thickness of the layer grew with increasing oxidation time and temperature. A thin oxide layer (average 0.16 µm) was generated by oxidation at a temperature of 600 °C for a duration of 5 h, and at 800 °C, a large oxide layer of 10.8 µm thickness was formed. The most significant surface hardness of 1000 ± 150 HV0.05 was produced for the layer oxidized at 900 °C. On the other hand, the lowest hardness of 360 ± 150 HV0.05 was recorded for the raw materials. Best wear resistance had been achieved for specimens oxidized at 800 °C. During NaCl hot corrosion test, the weight loss of the raw specimen was 6.4 mg/cm2 due to the flaking off of the corrosion product. However, for specimens oxidized at 600 °C for 50 h, weight loss after corrosion testing was 0.54 mg/cm2, less than that of the specimen before corrosion. The treatments of waste tire rubber (WTR) have been attracted the attention of many researchers because of their great impact on improving the properties of these wastes and then using it as an alternative to the virgin rubber than if it was used as it is. In this context, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and SBR/Devulcanized waste tire rubber prepared by two methods, mechano-chemical and ultrasonic devulcanization of WTR have been reinforcing by polyester tire cord (PTC) with different contents 3 and 5 wt%. Vulcanization effect by gamma radiation doses up to 150 kGy have been studied on the prepared composites. Evaluations of the prepared composites have been done using various measurements like Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry and mechanical parameters. Stress–strain response for describing the crosslink density of polymer network was designated. Thermal stability of the blend formulations by thermogravimetric analysis and activation energy calculations have been calculated. Moreover, the internal structure has been investigated by scanning electron microscope. Purpose: Several minimally invasive procedures were used to treat displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures (DIACFs). No agreement among different authors about either the ideal fixation method or which technique is minimally invasive. The aim of this study was to compare functional and radiographic outcomes of two minimally invasive techniques in treatment of Sanders type II and III DIACFs by using K-wires or cannulated screws without bone grafts.Methods: A prospective randomized controlled study was conducted on 28 patients (34 feet) with Sanders type II or III DIACFs, treated by closed reduction and fixation using cannulated screws or K-wires, at the Orthopedics Department of Sohag University Hospital, between April 2020 and February 2022. Functional assessment was done by American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score and VAS for pain. Radiographic assessment was done by measurement of three calcaneal angles (Gissane, Böhler's, and posterior facet inclination angles) and three calcaneal distances (height, length, and width of the calcaneus).Results: Mean ages of patients at the time of operation were 34.8 years for the cannulated screw group and 36.6 years for the K-wire group. A vast majority of patients were males (78.6%). Involvement of the right side in the cannulated screw group was 57.1% and that in the K-wire group was 47.9%. Mean operative time was significantly shorter among the K-wire group (42 min) compared to the cannulated screw group (57 min). Mean AOFAS score was higher among the cannulated screw group (85.9 points) compared to the K-wire group (75.8 points). Final VAS was significantly better among the cannulated screw group compared to the K-wire group. Mean time of radiographic union in the cannulated screw group was 8.9 weeks and that in the K-wire group was 10.1 weeks.Conclusion: Both techniques avoided wound complications associated with ORIF with the advantage of a shorter hospital stay. Patients in the cannulated screw group had better functional and radiographic outcomes and a lower rate of subtalar arthritis than patients in the K-wire group. We studied the effect of menopause with subsequent estrogen drop on optic nerve head structure and peripapillary vasculature. This cross-sectional analytic study was carried out on 100 eyes of 100 patients; patients were divided into a premenopausal group (50 eyes) and a postmenopausal group (50 eyes). Optical coherence tomography was done to evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) and optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to assess the peripapillary capillary vessel density. RNFLT as well as the peripapillary vessel density (VD) were significantly lower in the postmenopausal group (P value < 0.001) with increasing age, hormonal drop, and higher intraocular pressure (IOP), specifically in the inferior quadrant. However, the negative correlation between IOP and VD (r = − 0.541) was stronger than its negative correlation with RNFLT (r = − 0.318). Postmenopausal hormonal changes lead to a significant rise in IOP-although still not glaucomatous- and a decrease in the RNFLT and perfusion of the optic nerve. This confirms the relation between hormonal drop and glaucoma in postmenopausal women. Changes in peripapillary vascular density were more evident than RNFL in correlation with IOP and age changes. In this paper, a miniaturized size UWB 4-element MIMO antenna with a band rejection feature is introduced. The four elements have a rectangular radiator with curved edges and a partial ground plane with an etched slot to enlarge the bandwidth of the suggested structure to operate from 3 up to 12 GHz with S11 ≤ − 10 dB. The high isolation between elements was achieved by forming the antennas orthogonally without adding decoupling elements to simplify the design. The suggested design has a size of 47 × 47 mm2 placed on low price FR4 substrate. A simple slot is etched into the radiator to achieve the desired band rejection. The simulated and tested outcomes achieved operated band extended from 3 up to 12 GHz with band rejection feature within 3.3 GHz up to 4.3 GHz to eliminate interference with WIMAX applications and high isolation of more than 22 dB between ports. Also, the antenna fulfills peak gain of 3.5 dBi, envelope correlation coefficient(ECC) < 0.005, diversity gain (DG) 9.98 dB and channel capacity loss (CCL) < 0.4 bit/s/Hz within the operating bands. Surgery for benign anal conditions is a common practice and is usually followed by a good outcome. The present review aimed to summarize the emergence and evolution of different laser techniques used for the treatment of benign anal conditions and report their current outcome. PubMed and Scopus were searched for studies that assessed the use of laser in benign anal conditions. Anal conditions reviewed were hemorrhoids, anal fistula, anal warts, anal stenosis, and anal fissure. The full text of the studies retrieved was summarized in a narrative and tabular form. Laser techniques used for the treatment of hemorrhoidal disease were laser open hemorrhoidectomy, laser hemorrhoidoplasty, and Doppler-guided hemorrhoidal laser dearterialization. Resolution of hemorrhoidal symptoms was reported in 72–100% of patients after laser treatment. YAG laser, fistula laser closure, and photodynamic therapy have been used for the treatment of anal fistula with success rates ranging from 20 to 92.6%. Anal warts can be treated with photodynamic therapy with or without YAG or CO2 laser with a success rate up to 88%. A few studies reported the use of laser in the treatment of chronic anal fissure and anal stenosis. The use of laser in the treatment of benign anal conditions is associated with promising outcomes. Laser was most assessed in hemorrhoidal disease and anal fistula and showed more consistent success rates with hemorrhoidal disease than with anal fistula.
