Pulsed Eddy Current Testing (PECT) is a hotspot for non-destructive testing of metallic materials. As a key part of the system, the performance of the excitation source will directly affect the results. A new pulse power supply circuit is proposed to overcome the problems of long turn-off time, no constant current control, large volume, and low power of the excitation source in the existing PECT method for material defects. It uses a combination of linear regulated power supply and switched power supply to realize a compound circuit topology of constant current and constant voltage clamp. Then, the stability and rapidity of the excitation system are verified through simulation experiments and prototype demonstration. The amplitude of the pulsed power supply is adjustable within 20A, with an inaccuracy under 1%, and it is able to turn off at high speed with an edge fall time of nanoseconds. Finally, the prototype is used to simulate the detection of aluminum metal defects, the peak voltage of the detection coil can accurately identify different defect depths with high resolution. This study aimed to investigate the role of POU Class 4 Homeobox 1 (POU4F1) in regulating gemcitabine (GEM) resistance in lung cancer cells. The mRNA and protein expressions were assessed using RT-qPCR, western blot, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. Cell viability and proliferation were assessed by CCK-8 assay and EdU assay. TUNEL staining and flow cytometry were employed to detect cell apoptosis. The m6A modification of TWF1 was detected using MeRIP assay. The interactions between molecules were validated using dual luciferase reporter gene, ChIP, and RIP assays. POU4F1 knockdown inhibited GEM resistance and autophagy in lung cancer cells. Mechanistically, POU4F1 transcriptionally activated methyltransferase-like protein 3 (METTL3) in GEM-resistant cells by binding to the METTL3 promoter. METTL3 promoted the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification and expression level of twinfilin-1 (TWF1). Overexpression of METTL3 and TWF1 weakened the effects of POU4F1 knockdown on GEM resistance and autophagy. Moreover, knockdown POU4F1 also enhanced GEM anti-tumor sensitivity in vivo. In conclusion, POU4F1 upregulation promoted GEM resistance in lung cancer cells by promoting autophagy through increasing METTL3-mediated TWF1 m6A modification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bioaerosol filtration is crucial for improving indoor air quality and reducing cross-infection risk. It is necessary to conduct a comprehensive study on the bioaerosol filtration performance of air filters under different influencing factors. Firstly, this study proposed a standardized test scheme for the comprehensive evaluation of bioaerosol filtration performance. Additionally, the high-efficiency particulate air (H13) and medium-efficiency particulate air (F8) filters were evaluated in depth using Serratia marcescens bioaerosol, considering the face velocity, relative humidity (RH), and operating time. This study also investigated the impact of removing static electricity on the bioaerosol filtration efficiency (BFE) of F-filter materials. The pressure drop (ΔP) value of H13-filter and the BFE of F8-filter were significantly affected by face velocity and RH. When the face velocity increased from 5 to 20 cm/s, the H13-filter maintained a BFE above 99%, while ΔP increased by 303 Pa. During a 90 min test, the maximum change in the BFE of the H13-filter was 0.80% and ΔP increased by 26 Pa. Conversely, the BFE of the F8-filter decreased by up to 12.21%, while ΔP increased by only 3 Pa. Higher RH resulted in more pronounced changes in BFE. After removing the static electricity from the F8-filter material, the BFE decreased significantly, with a maximum reduction of 25%. The results may provide valuable insights into the application of conventional filters in bioaerosol filtration and serve as a guide for the enhancement and optimization of filter design. The frequency characteristics of lung sounds have great significance for noninvasive diagnosis of respiratory diseases. The rales in the lower respiratory tract region that can provide rich information about symptoms of respiratory diseases are not clear. In this paper, a three-dimensional idealized bifurcated lower respiratory tract geometric model, which contains 3rd to 13th generation (G3–G13) bronchi is constructed, where Re ∼ 10 1 - 10 3 , and then the large eddy simulation and volume of fluid are used to study the fluid flow characteristics. Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings model are subsequently used to study the frequency characteristics of rale of different generations of bronchi. The results showed that bronchial blockage and sputum movement will enhance the turbulence intensity and vortex shedding intensity of flow. The dominant frequency and highest value of sound pressure level (SPL) of rhonchi/moist crackles decrease with the increase of bronchial generation. The change rates of dominant frequency of rhonchi / moist crackles in adjacent generations were 5.0 ± 0.1 ~ 9.1 ± 0.2% and 3.1 ± 0.1 ~ 11.9 ± 0.3%, respectively, which is concentrated in 290 ~ 420 Hz and 200 ~ 300 Hz, respectively. The change rates of SPL of rhonchi/moist crackles were 8.8 ± 0.1 ~ 15.7 ± 0.1% and 7.1 ± 0.1 ~ 19.5 ± 0.2%, respectively, which is concentrated in 28 ~ 50 dB and 16 ~ 32 dB, respectively. In the same generation of bronchus (e.g., G8, G9) with the same degree of initial blockage, the dominant frequency and SPL of moist crackles can be 3.7 ± 0.2% and 4.5 ± 0.3% slightly higher than that of rhonchi, respectively. To deal with the poor generalization of previous deep learning-based methods, a novel anchor-free deep learning framework called CA-CentripetalNet is proposed for hardhat wearing detection. Two novel schemes are proposed to improve the feature extraction and utilization ability of CA-CentripetalNet, which are vertical-horizontal corner pooling and bounding constrained center attention. The former is designed to realize the comprehensive utilization of marginal features and internal features. The latter is designed to enforce the backbone to pay attention to internal features, which is only used during the training rather than during the detection. Experimental results indicate that the CA-CentripetalNet achieves better performance with the 88.63% mAP (mean Average Precision) with less memory consumption at a reasonable speed than the existing deep learning-based methods, especially in case of small-scale hardhats and non-worn-hardhats. Background: There has been great progress in the use of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage in acute pancreatitis patients using a novel lumen-apposing metal stent (LAMS) in the last decade, but some patients experience bleeding. Our research analyzed the preprocedural risk factors for bleeding. Methods: From July 13, 2016 to June 23, 2021, we retrospectively analyzed all patients who received endoscopic drainage by the LAMS in our hospital. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses were used to identify the independent risk factors. We plotted ROC curves based on the independent risk factors. Results: A total of 205 patients were analyzed and 5 patients were excluded. A total of 200 patients were included in our research. Thirty (15%) patients presented with bleeding. In the multivariate analysis, computed tomography severity index score (CTSI) score [odds ratio (OR), 2.66; 95% CI: 1.31–5.38; P = 0.007], positive blood cultures [odds ratio (OR), 5.35; 95% CI: 1.31–21.9; P = 0.02], and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score [odds ratio (OR), 1.14; 95% CI: 1. 01–1.29; P = 0.045] were associated with bleeding. The area under the ROC curve of the combined predictive indicator was 0.79. Conclusion: Bleeding in endoscopic drainage by the LAMS is significantly associated with the CTSI score, positive blood cultures, and APACHE II score. The primary endpoint was the detection rate of prostate cancer (PCa) according to the PI-RADS score/ultrasound characteristics, categorized as benign or invisible (Bi), hypoechoic only (Ho), and hypoechoic with microcalcification (Hm), assessed through cross-stratification. The secondary endpoints included the distribution of ultrasound characteristics across PI-RADS scores, prostate zones, and histological types. Finally, associations between ultrasound characteristics and clinically significant PCa (csPCa) were assessed using multivariate logistic regression analysis (MVA).Among lesions, 233 (46%) were Bi, 210 (42%) Ho, and 59 (12%) Hm. First, Bi lesions had a 64% (103/161) non-cancer rate in PI-RADS 3, while Ho + Hm lesions showed the highest csPCa rate in PI-RADS 5 at 82% (102/124). Additionally, Ho + Hm lesions were predominantly observed in PI-RADS 5 (92% [114/124]) and in the peripheral zone (64% [179/278]). Mounting interest in modeling outdoor diffusion and transmission of bioaerosols due to the prevalence of COVID-19 in the urban environment has led to better knowledge of the issues concerning exposure risk and evacuation planning. In this study, the dispersion and deposition dynamics of bioaerosols around a vaccine factory were numerically investigated under various thermal conditions and leakage rates. To assess infection risk at the pedestrian level, the improved Wells-Riley equation was used. To predict the evacuation path, Dijkstra's algorithm, a derived greedy algorithm based on the improved Wells-Riley equation, was applied. The results show that, driven by buoyancy force, the deposition of bioaerosols can reach 80 m on the windward sidewall of high-rise buildings. Compared with stable thermal stratification, the infection risk of unstable thermal stratification in the upstream portion of the study area can increase by 5.53% and 9.92% under a low and high leakage rate, respectively. A greater leakage rate leads to higher infection risk but a similar distribution of high-risk regions. Safety harness plays an essential role in protecting the workers in high-altitude operations from falls from heights. Automatic detection of safety harness wearing is significant for safety management. To deal with the inherent problems of the existing two-stage detection method for safety harnesses, a novel one-stage detection framework is designed by incorporating several promising modules into a YOLO network, which is end-to-end trained. Here, the dilated convolution module and the depth-wise separable convolution module are subsequently incorporated to improve the overall receptive fields of feature maps and to reduce the amount of calculation, respectively. An attention proposal sub-network (APN) is introduced for fine-grained feature learning. To improve the convergence of the proposed framework, a novel loss function is designed by adding a penalty term into the loss function named complete intersection over union (CIoU). Also, to facilitate the study, a new and publicly available dataset for safety harness wearing detection is constructed, which consists of 2617 images including 8163 safety harness examples. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework can perform an excellent task for safety harness wearing detection with 80.25% mAP at a reasonable speed of 29.18 FPS, especially for small instances. Objectives: The purpose of this systematic review was to compare the accuracy of digital and conventional full-arch impressions in vivo. Materials and methods: This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA and registered at the PROSPERO (CRD42021232736). Electronic and hand searches were performed to identify in vivo studies comparing the linear or 3D accuracy of digital and conventional impressions. The risk of bias (ROB) of included studies was assessed by QUADAS-2, and the overall quality of evidence was assessed by GRADE. Results: Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria, and 13 studies were included in the meta-analysis. There was no significant difference between digital and conventional impressions in the linear measurements of tooth width, anterior Bolton ratio, overall Bolton ratio, intercanine distance (ICD), and intermolar distance (IMD). The repeated measurement mean errors (RMEs) were less than 0.1 mm, the intra-examiner intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values were more than 0.9, and the inter-examiner ICC values were more than 0.87 for both impression techniques. The 3D deviation between digital and alginate impressions was 0.09 mm. The 3D precision of both impression techniques was less than 0.1 mm. Conclusions: The trueness of digital and alginate full-arch impressions was similar, and both impression techniques showed high precision. More research was needed to compare digital impressions and other conventional impression materials. Clinical relevance: For patients with completely natural dentition, the digital impressions obtained directly from intraoral scanning can be considered a viable alternative to alginate impressions. Respiratory viruses can be attached to human exhaled particles and spread from person to person through respiratory activities. The purpose of this study is to obtain the quantitative description formula of human exhaled particles in the ventilated room through amount number of numerical simulation calculations and regression statistical analysis of the simulated data. In this study, a combination of numerical simulation and laboratory experiments was used, and the results were tallied preferably. Bacillus subtilis was released as a release source to investigate the migration and distribution of bioaerosol. The results show that under the condition of high air supply velocity, due to the disturbance of human respiration and airflow, the diffusion velocity of exhaled particles was faster and the diffusion range is larger than that of low air supply velocity within the same time frame. No matter where the location of the manikin was in the room, the exhaled particles would spread to the whole room in at least 900 s. The method used in this study could be used to predict the distribution of human exhaled particles concentration in different indoor spaces, such as public transport and hospitals. These findings could provide valuable reference for the location of indoor air purifiers, which plays a guiding role in the construction of a healthy indoor environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the flat plastic parts with the size range of 200 to 1300 mm, the structural parameters decision model of injection mold gating system is established in this paper. Firstly, the relationship between the warpage and the structural parameters of gating system is fitted by Kriging model, and the minimum warpage is optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain the best structural parameters. Secondly, the best structural parameters of gating system corresponding to 16 groups of plastic parts are taken as samples, and the relationship between the structural parameters of gating system and the size parameters of plastic parts is established by Kriging model. In addition, K-means is used to reduce the number of the structural parameters of gating system from 5 to 2, in order to improve the accuracy of decision model. Finally, the size parameters of plastic parts are input to the decision model to obtain the structural parameters of gating system. Through the verification of mold flow analysis experiment, the structural parameters of gating system obtained by this method meet the design requirements and can effectively shorten the structural design cycle of injection mold. The present study investigated the effects of Fe/SiO2 and MgO content on the viscous behaviors of the slag formed by the charging of secondary resources into the copper-smelting furnace. It is determined that the increase of Fe/SiO2 (0.8–1.2) and the addition of MgO (1–7 wt pct) both reduce the slag viscosity. The addition of MgO accelerates the transition of breaking temperature of slags to higher temperatures, while the effect of Fe/SiO2 on that is relatively complicated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectra indicate that increases in either Fe/SiO2 or MgO content contribute to depolymerization of silicate network structures in high-temperature melts. The [AlO6]9− octahedra in the melt tended to increase with increasing Fe/SiO2 and MgO content, while the opposite change is observed for [FeO4]5− tetrahedra. Moreover, an increase in Fe/SiO2 or MgO content also leads to a gradual decrease in the activation energy of slag viscous flow, except in the case of Fe/SiO2 of 1.2 and MgO content of 7 wt pct. The introduction of molecular complexity in an atom- and step-efficient manner remains an outstanding goal in modern synthetic chemistry. Artificial biosynthetic pathways are uniquely able to address this challenge by using enzymes to carry out multiple synthetic steps simultaneously or in a one-pot sequence1–3. Conducting biosynthesis ex vivo further broadens its applicability by avoiding cross-talk with cellular metabolism and enabling the redesign of key biosynthetic pathways through the use of non-natural cofactors and synthetic reagents4,5. Here we describe the discovery and construction of an enzymatic cascade to MK-1454, a highly potent stimulator of interferon genes (STING) activator under study as an immuno-oncology therapeutic6,7 (ClinicalTrials.gov study ). From two non-natural nucleotide monothiophosphates, MK-1454 is assembled diastereoselectively in a one-pot cascade, in which two thiotriphosphate nucleotides are simultaneously generated biocatalytically, followed by coupling and cyclization catalysed by an engineered animal cyclic guanosine-adenosine synthase (cGAS). For the thiotriphosphate synthesis, three kinase enzymes were engineered to develop a non-natural cofactor recycling system in which one thiotriphosphate serves as a cofactor in its own synthesis. Background: The goal of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety of needle-knife fistulotomy (NKF) to that of conventional cannulation methods (CCMs) when used for primary biliary access in patients with duodenal papillary tumors. Methods: Consecutive patients who had duodenal papillary tumors and who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) were retrospectively enrolled. Successful cannulation rates, cannulation and procedure times, and the prevalence of adverse events were compared between the NKF and CCM groups. Results: A total of 404 patients (NKF, n = 124; CCM, n = 280) with duodenal papillary tumors were included. The primary and overall cannulation rates were 92.1% (372/404) and 96.0% (388/404), respectively. Compared to CCMs, NKF was associated with a significantly higher successful cannulation rate (99.2% versus 88.9%, P < 0.001) and significantly lower cannulation times (2.1 ± 2.0 min versus 4.7 ± 5.2 min), procedure times (8.8 ± 3.8 min versus 12.9 ± 7.6 min), and unintentional pancreatic duct cannulation rates (1.6% versus 20%), with P < 0.001 for all. Overall adverse events occurred less frequently in the NKF group (3.2% versus 10.7%, P = 0.011). Of these adverse events, post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) was significantly lower in the NKF group than in the CCM group (1.6% versus 6.8%, P = 0.03). Bleeding and cholangitis rarely occurred with either cannulation method (0.8% versus 2.1%, P = 0.681, and 0.8% versus 1.7%, P = 0.671, respectively). A novel coupling system that combines a photovoltaic/thermal (PV/T) subsystem and an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) driven by solar parabolic trough collector (PTC) is presented in this paper. The mathematical model is initially built. On the basis, the influence of area ratio of two collectors (PV/T and PTC) on the performance of system is discussed. The results show that the optimal area ratio of PV/T to PTC is 8:2, which can achieve the maximum energy output. Moreover, the performance of the coupling system and two independent systems (PV/T and ORC system) are compared and analyzed. The results show that the coupling system is more reliable and its total output energy (heat and electricity) is the highest, compared with the other two independent systems. The solar energy utilization efficiency of the coupling system is 40% higher than that of the other two independent systems in the steady-state simulation. Moreover, the annual output energy per unit area collector of the coupling system is 13% higher than that of the other two independent systems in the dynamic simulation. Furthermore, in the dynamic simulation of a typical day, the PV panels' temperature of the coupling system is 5°C–7°C lower than that of the independent PV/T system. It means that the power generation efficiency of PV panels can be increased by 1.5%–3.5%. This study aims to explore the operation characteristics of the novel solar energy utilization coupling system and promote the development of renewable energy utilization models, which provides a reference for the design and optimization of related energy systems. This study analyzes the growth and reproduction of dust accumulated fungi (DAF) in an air-conditioning system based on field measurement and molecular biology, laboratory experiment and prediction modelling. The field measurement was conducted to collect dust in filter screen, surface cooler and air supply duct of two air handling units (AHUs). The results indicate that dust volume and fungal number in two AHUs generally met the hygienic specification of public buildings, but the cleansing did not fulfil requirements. High-throughput sequencing was conducted, revealing that the dominant fungal species were Alternaria_betae-kenyensis, Cladosporium_delicatulum, Aspergillus_sydowii, Verticillium_dahliae. Laboratory experiment was conducted to analyze the impact of several factors (e.g. growth time, temperature, relative humidity, duct material) and their combination on the DAF growth. The results indicate that fungal growth increased with time, peaking at 4 days or 5 days. Higher relative humidity or temperature was conducive to fungal growth. The orthogonal experiment revealed that the condition of "antibacterial composite, 22 ± 1 °C and 45%–55% RH" had the strongest inhibiting impact on fungal growth. Logistic model, Gompertz model and square-root model were further developed to predict the fungal growth under different conditions. The results show that the Logistic model had high feasibility and accuracy, the Gompertz model was feasible with lower accuracy and the square-root model was feasible with high accuracy. Overall, this study facilitates the understanding of the DAF growth in air-conditioning ducts, which is important for real-time prediction and timely control of the fungal contamination. Detecting living algae from treated ship's ballast water is an important task for port state control (PSC) under the requirement of the International Ballast Water Convention. In this paper, electrokinetic detection and separation of living algae from NaClO- and UV-treated ship's ballast water in a microfluidic chip are presented. The electrokinetic movement of algae in a straight poly ethylene glycol (PEG)–modified PDMS microchannel filled with 10% PEG solution was measured by using an optical microscope. The experimental results show that the moving velocity of dead algae is lower by more than 80% in comparison with living algae. The decreased velocity is larger for larger dead algae and the velocity is decreased to zero for dead algae larger than 6 μm in diameter. A curve was obtained to evaluate the vitality of algae with similar moving velocity but different sizes. Electrokinetic separation of living algae from a mixture sample in a straight channel was also achieved. Phase equilibria in the Ni-Si-Zr ternary system have been investigated experimentally by means of x-ray diffraction and electron probe micro-analyzer on equilibrated ternary alloys. Four ternary phases were detected at 1023 and 1173 K. The Ni16Si7Zr6 phase tends to present in two different contrasts and has a wide homogeneity range. The reported Ni2Si9Zr14 phase is not detected in this work. It is proposed that the Ni2Si9Zr14 phase is unstable at these temperatures. As for the binary phases, Ni5Zr and Ni7Zr2 dissolve appreciable amounts of Si and γNi31Si12, βNi3Si, δNi2Si, NiSi2 exhibit a considerable solubility of Zr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Model quantization is a widely used technique to compress and accelerate deep neural network (DNN) inference. Emergent DNN hardware accelerators begin to support flexible bitwidth (1–8 bits) to further improve the computation efficiency, which raises a great challenge to find the optimal bitwidth for each layer: it requires domain experts to explore the vast design space trading off accuracy, latency, energy, and model size, which is both time-consuming and usually sub-optimal. There are plenty of specialized hardware accelerators for neural networks, but little research has been done to design specialized neural networks optimized for a particular hardware accelerator. The latter is demanding given the much longer design cycle of silicon than neural nets. Conventional quantization algorithm ignores the different hardware architectures and quantizes all the layers in a uniform way. In this paper, we introduce the Hardware-Aware Automated Quantization (HAQ) framework which automatically determine the quantization policy, and we take the hardware accelerator's feedback in the design loop. Rather than relying on proxy signals such as FLOPs and model size, we employ a hardware simulator to generate the direct feedback signals to the RL agent. Compared with other conventional methods, our framework is fully automated and can specialize the quantization policy for different neural network architectures and hardware architectures. Our framework effectively reduced the latency by 1.4–1.95 × and the energy consumption by 1.9 × with negligible loss of accuracy compared with the fixed bitwidth (8 bits) quantization. Our framework reveals that the optimal policies on different hardware architectures (i.e., edge and cloud architectures) under different resource constraints (i.e., latency, energy and model size) are drastically different. The coupling algorithm of the finite element method (FEM) and boundary element method (BEM) can make maximal use of both methods’ advantages. However, such coupling will reduce the computational efficiency because the systems’ degrees of freedom will increase sharply. Thus, a new coupling algorithm that achieves accuracy and computational efficiency is necessary. This study proposes the Newmark-based precise integration FEM (NBPI-FEM) and analytical-based time domain BEM (ABTD-BEM) coupling algorithm. In this coupling algorithm, the governing equation of the FEM is solved by Newmark-based precise integration, and the governing equation of the BEM is solved by the analytical method. First, the procedures of NBPI-FEM and ABTD-BEM are given. The coupling strategy is then provided, and the relationship between the iteration numbers and the relaxation parameter is investigated. Finally, two illustrative examples—i.e., 1-D rod and a semi-infinite structure—are selected to verify the coupling algorithm proposed in the study. The results show that the numerical solutions agree well with the analytical solutions for the 1-D rod example and coincide with the numerical solutions calculated by FEM. Background: Light provides the energy for photosynthesis and determines plant morphogenesis and development. Low light compromises photosynthetic efficiency and leads to crop yield loss. It remains unknown how rice responds to low light stress at a proteomic level. Results: In this study, the quantitative proteomic analysis with isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) was used and 1221 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified from wild type rice plants grown in control or low light condition (17% light intensity of control), respectively. Bioinformatic analysis of DEPs indicated low light remarkably affects the abundance of chloroplastic proteins. Specifically, the proteins involved in carbon fixation (Calvin cycle), electron transport, and ATPase complex are severely downregulated under low light. Furthermore, overexpression of the downregulated gene encoding rice β subunit of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (OsGAPB), an enzyme in Calvin cycle, significantly increased the CO2 assimilation rate, chlorophyll content and fresh weight under low light conditions but have no obvious effect on rice growth and development under control light. Conclusion: Our results revealed that low light stress on vegetative stage of rice inhibits photosynthesis possibly by decreasing the photosynthetic proteins and OsGAPB gene is a good candidate for manipulating rice tolerance to low light stress. Soil salinization threats the agricultural production and food security worldwide. Salt stress induced plant senescence and chloroplast degradation. However, it remains largely unknown how the chloroplast-localized proteins affect plant response to salt stress. Here, we characterized a novel gene (At5g39520) in Arabidopsis, which is induced by salt stress and encodes a chloroplast-localized protein. Thus, this gene was named SALT-INDUCED CHLOROPLAST PROTEIN (SCP). A T-DNA insertion mutant of SCP gene (scp-1) showed the enhanced tolerance to salt stress, as indicated by the increased survival rates, fresh weights and chlorophyll contents compared with wild type plants under salt treatment. Salt-induced leaf senescence was also delayed in scp-1 mutant. The scp-1 complementation line and SCP overexpression lines displayed the hypersensitivity to salt stress. The qRT-PCR analysis indicated that the transcripts of CHLOROPLAST VESICULATION (CV), which mediates stress-induced chloroplast degradation, were altered in scp-1 mutant and SCP overexpression lines. Taken together, our results suggest that SCP gene plays a negative role in response to salt stress and has potential application for genetic modification of improving plant tolerance to salt stress. It has been a focus to reduce the energy consumption and improve the space heating performance of high-altitude buildings in winter seasons. In view of the abundant solar energy resources of the high-altitude region, the establishment of passive solar houses should be an effective strategy to deal with the problem of thermal comfort. Both window to wall ratio (WWR) and sunspace depth are of vital importance to determine the thermal comfort level of passive solar houses, while there are limited studies on analyzing their impacts on passive solar houses in high-altitude regions. Therefore, this study is designed to examine how WWR and sunspace depth affect space heating of passive solar houses in the Qinghai-Tibetan region. To be specific, the hourly radiation temperature variations and percentages of dissatisfaction of the residential building with different sunspace depth/WWR (including 0.9m/33%, 0.9m/45%, 0.9m/60%, 1.2m/33% and 1.5m/33%) were quantitatively examined. Results indicated that under the condition of 0.9m/45%, the overall average radiation temperature of the building was approximately 16°C during the entire heating season, which could better satisfy the heating requirements. Meanwhile, the average temperature was higher, and the thermal comfort level was better under the ratio of 45% or the depth of 1.5 m, when only an individual factor in either ratio or depth was considered. Key message: We report rampant homoeologous exchanges in progenies of a newly synthesized rice segmental allotetraploid and demonstrate their consequences to changes of gene expression and alternative splicing. Allopolyploidization is recurrent across the tree of angiosperms and known as a driving evolutionary force in both plants and animals. A salient feature of allopolyploidization is the induction of homoeologous exchange (HE) events between the constituent subgenomes, which may in turn cause changes in gene expression, transcript alternative splicing, and phenotypic novelty. However, this issue has been poorly studied, largely because lack of a system in which the exact parentage donating the subgenomes is known and the HE events are occurring in real time. Here, we employed whole-genome re-sequencing and RNA-seq-based transcriptome profiling in four randomly chosen progeny individuals (at the 10th-selfed generation) of segmental allotetraploids that were constructed by colchicine-mediated whole-genome doubling of F1 hybrids between the two subspecies (japonica and indica) of Asian cultivated Oryza sativa. We show that rampant HE events occurred in these tetraploid individuals, which converted most of the otherwise heterozygous genomic regions into a homogenized state of one parental subgenome. We demonstrate that genes within these homogenized genomic regions in the tetraploids showed high frequencies of altered expression and enhanced alternative splicing relative to their counterparts in the corresponding diploid parents in the embryo tissue. Intriguingly, limited overlaps between the differentially expressed genes and the differential alternative spliced genes were identified, which were partitioned to distinctly enriched gene ontology terms. Together, our results indicate that HE is a major mechanism to rapidly generate novelty in gene expression and transcriptome diversity, which may facilitate phenotypic innovation in nascent allopolyploids and relevant to allopolyploid crop breeding. STING is a newly identified adaptor protein for sensing cytosolic nucleic acid. It is well established that STING plays a crucial role in innate immune response via inducing production of type I IFN. Emerging evidence suggests that the activation of STING-dependent signaling is also implicated in the process of cell death, such as apoptosis, pyroptosis, necroptosis, and autophagy. Of note, the pro-death outcome is even predominant in certain cell types, like lymphocytes, myeloid cells, and hepatocytes. Given that STING agonists are being tested for enhancing antitumor immune responses, it is necessary to fully understand the outcome of STING activation. It has been reported that matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are induced by many cytokines, and they are involved in various inflammatory processes, including periodontitis. However, the effects of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) on MMP-9 expression in cementoblasts, the cells responsible for cementum production, remain largely unknown. In this study, we used qPCR and gelatin zymogram analysis to show that IL-1β upregulated MMP-9 expression in cementoblast-derived cell line. Several signaling pathways, such as ERK1/2, JNK, p38, and AP-1 (c-Fos and ATF-2), were activated in response to IL-1β stimulation. Furthermore, enhancement of AP-1 activity by IL-1β was further confirmed by the AP-1 reporter assay and the electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Pretreatment with specific inhibitors of ERK1/2 (U0126), JNK (SP600125), and AP-1 (tanshinone IIA) attenuated IL-1β-induced MMP-9 expression. In addition, inhibitors of ERK1/2 (U0126) and JNK (SP600125) attenuated IL-1β-enhanced AP-1 activity. This suggested that IL-1β stimulated AP-1 activation, at least partially, through ERK1/2 and JNK signaling pathways. Moreover, we found that IL-1β also upregulated the expression of MMP-13 and enhanced MMP-mediated degradation of type I collagen. Collectively, these results suggested that IL-1β induced MMP-9 expression by activation of AP-1 through the ERK1/2 and JNK signaling pathways in cementoblast-derived cell line and enhanced MMP-mediated collagen degradation possibly by MMP-13 and MMP-9. Autophagy is a self-digestive process that eliminates impaired or aged proteins and potentially toxic intracellular components to maintain homeostasis. We previously demonstrated that TNF-α played a critical role in cementoblast differentiation, mineralization and apoptosis; however, the effect of TNF-α on cementoblast autophagy has remained unclear. In this study, an elevated immunofluorescence signal of LC3B and autophagic vacuoles, autophagosomes and autolysosomes were detected under TNF-α stimulation in OCCM-30 cells. Autophagy-related genes and proteins, Beclin-1, LC3A and Atg-5, were significantly upregulated by TNF-α in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. During this process, the activity of Stat3 was dramatically enhanced and when the activity of Stat3 was blocked by either a specific chemical inhibitor or siRNA transfection before TNF-α stimulation, the TNF-α-induced upregulation of autophagy-related genes and proteins was strongly inhibited. Recombination occurs frequently between enteroviruses (EVs) which are classified within the same species of the Picornaviridae family. Here, using viral metagenomics, the genomes of two recombinant EV-Gs (strains EVG 01/NC_CHI/2014 and EVG 02/NC_CHI/2014) found in the feces of pigs from a swine farm in China are described. The two strains are characterized by distinct insertion of a papain-like protease gene from toroviruses classified within the Coronaviridae family. According to recent reports the site of the torovirus protease insertion was located at the 2C/3A junction region in EVG 02/NC_CHI/2014. For the other variant EVG 01/NC_CHI/2014, the inserted protease sequence replaced the entire viral capsid protein region up to the VP1/2A junction. These two EV-G strains were highly prevalent in the same pig farm with all animals shedding the full-length genome (EVG 02/NC_CHI/2014) while 65% also shed the capsid deletion mutant (EVG 01/NC_CHI/2014). Indoor airborne culturable fungi exposure has been closely linked to occupants’ health. However, conventional measurement of indoor airborne fungal concentration is complicated and usually requires around one week for fungi incubation in laboratory. To provide an ultra-fast solution, here, for the first time, a knowledge-based machine learning model is developed with the inputs of indoor air quality data for estimating the concentration of indoor airborne culturable fungi. To construct a database for statistical analysis and model training, 249 data groups of air quality indicators (concentration of indoor airborne culturable fungi, indoor/outdoor PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations, indoor temperature, indoor relative humidity, and indoor CO2 concentration) were measured from 85 residential buildings of Baoding (China) during the period of 2016.11.15–2017.03.15. Our results show that artificial neural network (ANN) with one hidden layer has good prediction performances, compared to a support vector machine (SVM). With the tolerance of ± 30%, the prediction accuracy of the ANN model with ten hidden nodes can at highest reach 83.33% in the testing set. YO:Eu and YO:Eu/Bi particles with spherical morphology are synthesized by microwave-assistant hydrothermal process. The results show that cubic phase YO:Eu and YO:Eu/Bi particles with uniform size and spherical shape are obtained. The doping Eu and Bi ion have no influence on the phase and morphology of samples. In the hydrothermal process, the fast and homogeneous microwave heating benefits the formation of samples with uniform size and spherical shape. Background: Heat collection rate and heat loss coefficient are crucial indicators for the evaluation of in service water-in-glass evacuated tube solar water heaters. However, the direct determination requires complex detection devices and a series of standard experiments, wasting too much time and manpower. Findings: To address this problem, we previously used artificial neural networks and support vector machine to develop precise knowledge-based models for predicting the heat collection rates and heat loss coefficients of water-in-glass evacuated tube solar water heaters, setting the properties measured by 'portable test instruments' as the independent variables. A robust software for determination was also developed. However, in previous results, the prediction accuracy of heat loss coefficients can still be improved compared to those of heat collection rates. Also, in practical applications, even a small reduction in root mean square errors (RMSEs) can sometimes significantly improve the evaluation and business processes. Conclusions: As a further study, in this short report, we show that using a novel and fast machine learning algorithm-extreme learning machine can generate better predicted results for heat loss coefficient, which reduces the average RMSEs to 0.67 in testing. CeO nanocubes having a narrow size distribution ranging from 30 to 50 nm were successfully synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. By tuning the hydrothermal treatment time, the morphology evolution between the nanospheres and nanocubes were observed. The structure and morphology of the nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM, FE-SEM, XPS, and FTIR. XPS spectra indicated that the cerium in the nanocrystals was predominantly tetravalent. The formation mechanism was discussed briefly. The photocatalytic of the as-prepared products was tested by the photocatalytic degradation of the RhB under UV illumination. A few-mode fiber (FMF) is designed to support three spatial modes (LP, LP, and LP) and fabricated through plasma chemical vapor deposition (PCVD)and rod-in-tube (RIT) method. Using PDM-DFTS-OFDM- 32QAM modulation, wavelength division multiplexing, mode multiplexing, and coherent detection, we successfully demonstrated 200 Tb/s (375 × 3 × 178.125 Gb/s) signal over 1 km FMF using C and L bands with 25 GHz channel spacing. After 1 km FMF transmission, all the tested bit error rates (BERs) are below 20% forward error correction (FEC) threshold (2.0 × 10). SrAlO:Eu/Dy phosphors are synthesized by the solid-state reaction. The obtained powders are characterized by XRD, SEM and luminescent spectrometer. The effects of the mole ratios of Dy/Eu on luminescent properties of SrAlO:Eu/Dy phosphors are investigated. The XRD pattern indicates that the powders have pure SrAlO phase. The SEM micrographs reveal that SrAlO:Eu/Dy phosphors show similar irregular morphology. Under the excitation of 360 nm, SrAlO:Eu/Dy phosphors exhibit the characteristic emission band originating from the 4f5d → 4f transition of Eu ions. The emission intensity increases with the increasing mole ratio of Dy/Eu up to 3 and then decreases. Thermalluminescence results indicate that the persistent afterglow of SrAlO:Eu/Dy phosphors is generated by suitable electron traps formed by the Dy ions within the host. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To assess associations between home indoor air environments and asthma, allergies and pneumonia, children aged 1-8 years were surveyed from 12 kindergartens in the city of Xi'an. 2,020 questionnaires were responded with a response rate of 83.5 %. The prevalences of doctor diagnosed asthma, hay fever, and pneumonia were 2.9 %, 3.6 %, and 28.3 %, respectively. Living close to a highway was a risk factor for current rhinitis (AOR 1.5, 95 % CI 1.2-1.8), eczema (AOR 1.7, 95 % CI 1.2-2.5), and diagnosed pneumonia (AOR 1.3, 95 % CI 1.0-1.6). Dampness problems in the home were associated with 50 %-130 % increases in the prevalences of asthma and allergy. Airing bed linen under sun-shine was protective, especially against rhinitis. Pet avoidance was consistently and significantly associated with asthma and allergy (AOR 1.3-2.4). Decoration of the home during children's early life is a risk factor for current rhinitis (AOR 1.9, 95 % CI 1.3-2.9) and eczema (AOR 1.9, 95 % CI 1.1-3.6). Risk factors for pneumonia were living in an apartment (AOR 1.4, 95 % CI 1.1-1.8), latex wall paint (AOR 1.3, 95 % CI 1.0-1.7), dampness (AOR 1.4-1.5), breast feeding <3 months (AOR 1.3, 95 % CI 1.0-1.7), never airing bed linen in sunshine (AOR 1.3, 95 % CI 1.3-1.6), and cleaning children's room less frequently than once per day (AOR 1.4, 95 % CI 1.1-1.7). Asthma, rhinitis and eczema (allergic or non-allergic) have increased throughout the world during the last decades, especially among children. Changes in the indoor environment are suspected to be important causes. China has experienced a dramatic change in indoor environmental exposures during the past two decades. However, such changes and their associations with children’s asthma and other health aspects have not been thoroughly studied. China, Children, Homes, Health (CCHH), Phase I, was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of 48219 children 1–8 years old in 10 Chinese cities during 2010–2012. The questionnaire includes the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) core health questions and additional questions regarding housing, life habits and outdoor environment. In health analyses, children aged 3–6 years old were included. The prevalences of doctor diagnosed asthma varied from 1.7% to 9.8% (mean 6.8%), a large increase from 0.91% in 1999 and 1.50% in 2000. The prevalence of wheeze, rhinitis and atopic eczema (last 12 months) varied from 13.9% to 23.7%, 24.0% to 50.8% and 4.8% to 15.8%, respectively. Taiyuan had the lowest prevalences of all illnesses and Shanghai the highest, except for wheezewhere the highest value was for Urumqi. We found (1) no obvious association between disease prevalences and ambient PM 10 concentrations and (2) higher prevalences of disease in humid climates with hot summers and cold winters, but with no centrally heated buildings. To prevent the damage caused by DNA strand breaks, eukaryotic cells have evolved a series of highly conserved DNA repair mechanisms. The ubiquitously expressed acetyltransferase, Tip60, plays a central role in ATM (ataxia-telangiectasia mutated) activation which is involved in DNA repair. Recent work uncovered a new mechanism of ATM activation mediated by Tip60 and demonstrated that histone methylation, specifically, trimethylation of histone H3, is a key factor in the process. In this work tin-cobalt-carbon alloy was prepared by high energy ball milling and Cu foil was treated by electro-deposition method. The results show that alloy materials coated on surface-treated Cu foil display high discharge capacity and cycling performance than those coated on original Cu foil because of improved contact ability and buffer effect on large volume changes of alloy materials. A model for reaction synthesis of Li−B alloys has been presented. Results show that the first exothermal reaction can be divided into three stages. The first stage is an instantaneous reaction on the boundary between boron particles and lithium melting, in which the caloric released is inversely proportional to the particle size of the boron powder. The second stage is a reaction between the unreacted boron and the lithium that diffuses through the product LiB3 on the surface of the boron particle. This process can be described by Johnston model. The third stage is dissolution of the product LiB3 to Li liquid, which takes place at temperature up to 420°C. At the same time, the second exothermal reaction begins, which consists of nucleation and growth of the last Li-B compound. It can be divided into two substages, i.e. the nucleation pregnant stage and the exploded reaction stage. When the concentration of the particle nucleated is high enough, an exploding reaction takes place. The lower the temperature, the longer the time needed for the exploding reaction. Biological particles in the operating room (OR) air environment can cause surgical site infections (SSIs). Various ventilation systems have been employed in ORs to ensure an ultraclean environment. However, the effect ofdifferent ventilation systems on the control ofbacteria-carrying particles (BCPs) released from the surgical staff during surgery is unclear. In this study, the performance of four different ventilation systems (vertical laminar airflow ventilation (VLAF), horizontal laminar airflow ventilation (HLAF), differential vertical airflow ventilation (DVAF), and temperature-controlled airflow ventilation (TAF)) used in an OR was evaluated and compared based on the spatial BCP concentration. The airflow field in the OR was solved by the Renormalization Group (RNG) k-ε turbulence model, and the BCP phase was calculated by Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) and the discrete random walk (DRW) model. It was found that the TAF system was the most effective ventilation system among the four ventilation systems for ensuring air cleanliness in the operating area. This study also indicated that air cleanliness in the operating area depended not only on the airflow rate of the ventilation system but also on the airflow distribution, which was greatly affected by obstacles such as surgical lamps and surgical staff. Background: Grain shape is a critical agronomic trait affecting grain yield and quality. Exploration and functional characterization of grain shape-related genes will facilitate rice breeding for higher quality and yield. Results: Here, we characterized a recessive mutant named Oat-like rice for its unique grain shape which highly resembles oat grains. The Oat-like rice displayed abnormal floral organs, an open hull formed by remarkably elongated leafy lemmas and paleae, occasionally formed conjugated twin brown rice, an aberrant grain shape and a low seed setting rate. By map-based cloning, we discovered that Oat-like rice harbors a novel allele of OsMADS1 gene (OsMADS1Olr), which has a spontaneous point mutation that causes the substitution of an amino acid that is highly conserved in the MADS-box domain of the MADS-box family. Further linkage analysis indicated that the point mutation in the OsMADS1Olr is associated with Oat-like rice phenotype, and expression analysis of the OsMADS1 by qRT-PCR and GUS staining also indicated that it is highly expressed in flower organs as well as in the early stages of grain development. Furthermore, OsMADS1Olr-overexpressing plants showed similar phenotypes of Oat-like rice in grain shape, possibly due to the dominant negative effect. And OsMADS1-RNAi plants also displayed grain phenotypes like Oat-like rice. These results suggested that OsMADS1Olr is responsible for the Oat-like rice phenotype including aberrant grain shape. Moreover, the expression levels of representative genes related to grain shape regulation were apparently altered in Oat-like rice, OsMADS1Olr-overexpressing and OsMADS1-RNAi transgenic plants. Finally, compared with Oat-like rice, OsMADS1Olr-overexpressing and OsMADS1-RNAi plants, mild phenotype of seed-specific OsMADS1-RNAi transgenic plants indicated that OsMADS1 may has has a direct regulation role in grain development and the grain phenotypes of Oat-like rice, OsMADS1Olr-overexpressing and OsMADS1-RNAi plants are majorly caused by the abnormal lemma and palea development. Conclusions: Altogether, our results showed that grain shape and a low seed setting rate of the notable 'Oat-like rice' are caused by a spontaneous point mutation in the novel allele OsMADS1Olr. Furthermore, our findings suggested that OsMADS1 mediates grain shape possibly by affecting the expression of representative genes related to grain shape regulation. Thus, this study not only revealed that OsMADS1 plays a vital role in regulating grain shape of rice but also highlighted the importance and value of OsMADS1 to improve the quality and yield of rice by molecular breeding. Electrokinetic instabilities have been extensively studied in microchannel fluid flows with conductivity or conductivity and permittivity gradients for various microfluidic applications. This work presents an experimental and numerical investigation of the electrokinetic co-flow of ferrofluid and buffer solutions with matched electric conductivities. We find that the ferrofluid and buffer interface becomes unstable with periodic waves if the applied direct-current electric field reaches a threshold value. We develop a two-dimensional numerical model to seek a preliminary understanding of such an electrically originated flow instability. Our model indicates that the observed phenomenon is not a consequence of the electric body force acting on the permittivity gradients between the ferrofluid and buffer solutions. It is instead attributed to the diffusion-induced conductivity gradients that are formed at the ferrofluid and buffer interface due to the mismatching diffusivities of ferrofluid nanoparticles and buffer ions.
