Dual-functional nanomaterial electrodes have the capability to satisfy the requirements for both sweat analysis and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), thereby enabling the integration of electrochemical sensing and hydrogen production. In this study, ZIF-67 cubes are synthesized on nickel foam (NF), while TiO2 is obtained through an annealing process. Subsequently, the ZIF-67@TiO2/MoS2 nanocomposite is fabricated on nickel foam via a hydrothermal method. This composite material exhibits exceptional photocatalytic properties and is also suitable for the detection of glucose in sweat. The glucose detection range spans from 10 nM to 10 mM with a sensitivity of 7.24 μA mM−1 cm−2 for a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 and a detection limit of 0.43 μM. Moreover, when utilized as a hydrogen evolution electrode, this material demonstrates a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 118 mV, with a Tafel slope of 73 mV/dec. MRI offers new opportunities for detailed visualization of the different layers of the esophageal wall, as well as early detection and accurate characterization of esophageal lesions. Staging of esophageal tumors including extramural extent of disease, and status of the adjacent organ can also be performed by MRI with higher accuracy compared to other imaging modalities including CT and esophageal endoscopy. Although MDCT appears to be the primary imaging modality that is indicated for preoperative staging of esophageal cancer to assess tumor resectability, MDCT is considered less accurate in T staging. This review aims to update radiologists about emerging imaging techniques and the imaging features of various esophageal masses, emphasizing the imaging features that differentiate between esophageal masses, demonstrating the critical role of MRI in esophageal masses. Organic substances of low biodegradability and the high moisture content of herbaceous peat inhibit its high-value utilization. In this study, the effect of pretreatment with dilute sulfuric acid on the efficiency of the anaerobic fermentation of herbaceous peat was explored. Single-factor experiments and orthogonal tests were conducted to optimize the pretreatment conditions. The milled herbaceous peat (0.43 mm) was pretreated with 5% sulfuric acid at 100°C for 120 min with a solid–liquid ratio of 1:4, and the reducing sugar yield was 13.49%. The results suggest that dilute sulfuric acid might have hydrolyzed the β-glycosidic bonds between the sugar monomers, causing the partial degradation of cellulose into reducing sugar. Compared to the fermentation of untreated herbaceous peat, the total biomethane yield increased by 29.97%, and the fermentation period decreased by 22.50%. Pedestrian trajectory prediction is essential for self-driving vehicles, social robots, and intelligent monitoring applications. Diverse trajectory data is critical for high-accuracy trajectory prediction. However, the trajectory data is captured in scattered scenes, which can cause the problem of data island. Furthermore, artificial aggregation of trajectory data suffers from the risk of data leakage, ignoring the rule of privacy protection. We propose a multi-scene federated trajectory prediction (Fed-TP) method to solve the above problems. As our key contribution, a destination-oriented LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory)-based trajectory prediction (DO-TP) network is proposed in each scene to forecast future trajectories in an encoder-decoder manner. The independent training using trajectory data in each scene can prevent data leakage and achieves high privacy security. As another key contribution, a federated learning framework is introduced to break the scene limitation by conducting distributed collaborative training. The performance of different federated learning methods is compared on public datasets, including ETH, UCY, and Stanford Drone Dataset (SDD). Compared with FedAvg and FedProx, FedAtt is more suitable for pedestrian trajectory prediction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method has better data privacy security than directly training on multiple scenes and superior prediction performance than training on a single scene. Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is frequently accompanied by perineural invasion (PNI), which is associated with excruciating neuropathic pain and malignant progression. However, the relationship between PNI and tumour stromal cells has not been clarified. Methods: The dorsal root ganglia or sciatic nerves nerve model was used to observe the paracrine interaction and the activation effect among Schwann cells, tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs), and pancreatic cancer cells in vitro. Next generation sequencing, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation were used to explore the specific paracrine signalling between TAMs and Schwann cells. Results: We demonstrated that more macrophages were expressed around nerves that have been infiltrated by pancreatic cancer cells compared with normal nerves in murine and human PNI specimens. In addition, high expression of CD68 or GFAP is associated with an increased incidence of PNI and indicates a poor 5-year survival rate in patients with PDAC. Mechanistically, tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) activate Schwann cells via the bFGF/PI3K/Akt/c-myc/GFAP pathway. Schwann cells secrete IL-33 to recruit macrophages into the perineural milieu and facilitate the M2 pro-tumourigenic polarisation of macrophages. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that the bFGF/IL-33 positive feedback loop between Schwann cells and TAMs is essential in the process of PNI of PDAC. Plankton are an important component of marine protected areas (MPAs), and its communities would require much smaller interpatch distances to ensure connection among MPAs. According to the survey from MPAs dominated by artificial reefs and adjacent waters (estuary area (EA), aquaculture area (AA), artificial reef area (ARA), natural area (NA) and comprehensive effect area (CEA)) in Haizhou Bay in spring and autumn, we analyzed phyto-zooplankton composition, abundance and biomass, and correlation with hydrologic variables to gain information about the forces that structure the plankton. The results showed that the dominant zooplankton were copepods (spring, 98.9%; autumn, 94.2%), while the phytoplankton were mainly composed of Bacillariophyta (spring, 61.8%; autumn, 95.6%). The RDA results showed that temperature, salinity and depth highly associated with the distribution and composition of plankton species among the habitats than other factors in spring; temperature, Chla and DO had the strongest influence in autumn. The zooplankton in the ARA and AA ecosystems basically contained the same species as those in other habitats, and each habitat also exhibited a relatively unique combination of plankton species. The structures of the EA zooplankton in spring and the EA phytoplankton in both seasons were much different than other habitats, which may have been caused by factors such as currents and tides. We concluded that there exists similarity of the plankton community between artificial reef area and adjacent waters, whereas the EAs may be relatively independent systems. Therefore, these interaction between plankton community should be considered when designing MPA networks, and ocean circulations should be considered more than the environmental factors. Objectives: To investigate the MRI radiomics signatures in predicting pathologic response among patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). Methods: Patients who underwent NACT from March 2015 to October 2019 were prospectively included. Each patient underwent esophageal MR scanning within one week before NACT and within 2–3 weeks after completion of NACT, prior to surgery. Radiomics features extracted from T2-TSE-BLADE were randomly split into the training and validation sets at a ratio of 7:3. According to the progressive tumor regression grade (TRG), patients were stratified into two groups: good responders (GR, TRG 0 + 1) and poor responders (non-GR, TRG 2 + 3). We constructed the Pre/Post-NACT model (Pre/Post-model) and the Delta-NACT model (Delta-model). Kruskal–Wallis was used to select features, logistic regression was used to develop the final model. Results: A total of 108 ESCC patients were included, and 3/2/4 out of 107 radiomics features were selected for constructing the Pre/Post/Delta-model, respectively. The selected radiomics features were statistically different between GR and non-GR groups. The highest area under the curve (AUC) was for the Delta-model, which reached 0.851 in the training set and 0.831 in the validation set. Among the three models, Pre-model showed the poorest performance in the training and validation sets (AUC, 0.466 and 0.596), and the Post-model showed better performance than the Pre-model in the training and validation sets (AUC, 0.753 and 0.781). Conclusions: MRI-based radiomics models can predict the pathological response after NACT in ESCC patients, with the Delta-model exhibiting optimal predictive efficacy. Clinical relevance statement: MRI radiomics features could be used as a useful tool for predicting the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in esophageal carcinoma patients, especially in selecting responders among those patients who may be candidates to benefit from neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The ductus arteriosus (DA), bridging the aorta and pulmonary artery, immediately starts closing after birth. Remodeling of DA leads to anatomic obstruction to prevent repatency. Several histological changes, especially extracellular matrices (ECMs) deposition and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) migration bring to anatomic closure. The genetic etiology and mechanism of DA closure remain elusive. We have previously reported a novel copy number variant containing Vav2 in patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) patients, but its specific role in DA closure remains unknown. The present study revealed that the expression of Vav2 was reduced in human patent DA, and it was less enrichment in the adjacent aorta. Matrigel experiments demonstrated that Vav2 could promote SMC migration from PDA patient explants. Smooth muscle cells with Vav2 overexpression also presented an increased capacity in migration and downregulated contractile-related proteins. Meanwhile, SMCs with Vav2 overexpression exhibited higher expression of collagen III and lessened protein abundance of lysyl oxidase, and both changes are beneficial to DA remodeling. Overexpression of Vav2 resulted in increased activity of Rac1, Cdc42, and RhoA in SMCs. Further investigation noteworthily found that the above alterations caused by Vav2 overexpression were particularly reversed by Rac1 inhibitor. A heterozygous, rare Vav2 variant was identified in PDA patients. Compared with the wild type, this variant attenuated Vav2 protein expression and weakened the activation of downstream Rac1, further impairing its functions in SMCs. In conclusion, Vav2 functions as an activator for Rac1 in SMCs to promote SMCs migration, dedifferentiation, and ECMs production. Deleterious variant potentially induces Vav2 loss of function, further providing possible molecular mechanisms about Vav2 in PDA pathogenesis. These findings enriched the current genetic etiology of PDA, which may provide a novel target for prenatal diagnosis and treatment. Key messages: Although we have proposed the potential association between Vav2 and PDA incidence through whole exome sequencing, the molecular mechanisms underlying Vav2 in PDA have never been reported. This work, for the first time, demonstrated that Vav2 was exclusively expressed in closed DAs. Moreover, we found that Vav2 participated in the process of anatomic closure by mediating SMCs migration, dedifferentiation, and ECMs deposition through Rac1 activation. Our findings first identified a deleterious Vav2 c.701C>T variant that affected its function in SMCs by impairing Rac1 activation, which may lead to PDA defect. Titanomagnetite concentrate is known for the difficulty of its sintering by traditional sintering process (TSP) because of a high content of TiO2. In this study, the feasibility study of blast furnace burden preparation was carried out by composite agglomeration process (CAP). The work in this study focuses on the effects of titanomagnetite concentrate ratio, composite basicity, and coke breeze dosage on agglomeration indexes of CAP. The calculation results of the pneumatics of sintered bed show that CAP optimizes the particle size distribution of the mixed feed and increases the voidage of the material layer, which improves the permeability index. Under the following experimental conditions (coke breeze dosage of 3.8 wt.%, pelletized feed proportion of 25%, and composite basicity of 1.76), a sintering yield of 73.60%, productivity of 1.58t·(m2 h), and RDI+3.15 of 76.76% have been achieved by CAP, which were 12.10%, 49.06%, and 16.71% higher than those by TSP, respectively. Under same conditions of composite basicity, agglomeration technical indexes of CAP are obviously better than those of TSP. The development of industry has led to serious air pollution problems. It is very important to establish high-precision and high-performance air quality prediction models and take corresponding control measures. In this paper, based on 4 years of air quality and meteorological data from Tianjin, China, the relationships between various meteorological factors and air pollutant concentrations are analyzed. A hybrid deep learning model consisting of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) is proposed to predict pollutant concentrations. In addition, a Bayesian optimization algorithm is applied to obtain the optimal combination of hyperparameters for the proposed deep learning model, which enhances the generalization ability of the model. Furthermore, based on air quality data from multiple stations in the region, a multistation collaborative prediction method is designed, and the concept of a strongly correlated station (SCS) is defined. The predictive model is modified using the idea of SCS and is used to predict the pollutant concentration in Tianjin. The coefficient of determination R2 of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 are 0.89, 0.84, 0.69, 0.83, 0.92, and 0.84, respectively. In this study, we aimed to determine whether liraglutide could effectively reduce insulin resistance (IR) by regulating Sestrin2 (SESN2) expression in L6 rat skeletal muscle cells by examining its interactions with SESN2, autophagy, and IR. L6 cells were incubated with liraglutide (10–1000 nM) in the presence of palmitate (PA; 0.6 mM), and cell viability was detected using the cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. IR-related and autophagy-related proteins were detected using western blotting, and IR and autophagy-related genes were analyzed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Silencing SESN2 was used to inhibit the activities of SESN2. A reduction in insulin-stimulated glucose uptake was observed in PA-treated L6 cells, confirming IR. Meanwhile, PA decreased the levels of GLUT4 and phosphorylation of Akt and affected SESN2 expression. Further investigation revealed that autophagic activity decreased following PA treatment, but that liraglutide reversed this PA-induced reduction in autophagic activity. Additionally, silencing SESN2 inhibited the ability of liraglutide to up-regulate the expression of IR-related proteins and activate autophagy signals. Van der Waals semiconductor heterostructures (VSHs) composed of two or more two-dimensional (2D) materials with different band gaps exhibit huge potential for exploiting high-performance multifunctional devices. The application of 2D VSHs in atomically thin devices highly depends on the control of their carrier type and density. Herein, on the basis of comprehensive first-principles calculations, we report a new strategy to manipulate the doping polarity and carrier density in a class of 2D VSHs consisting of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and α-In2X3 (X = S, Se) ferroelectrics via switchable polarization field. Our calculated results indicate that the band bending of In2X3 layer driven by the FE polarization can be utilized for engineering the band alignment and doping polarity of TMD/In2X3 VSHs, which enables us to control their carrier density and type of the VSHs by the orientation and magnitude of local FE polarization field. Inspired by these findings, we demonstrate that doping-free p—n junctions achieved in MoTe2/In2Se3 VSHs exhibit high carrier density ( 10 1 3 − 10 1 4 cm − 2 ), and the inversion of the VHSs from n—p junctions to p—i—n junctions has been realized by the polarization switching from upward to downward states. This work provides a nonvolatile and nondestructive doping strategy for obtaining programmable p—n van der Waals (vdW) junctions and opens the possibilities for self-powered and multifunctional device applications. To extend the peat utilization chain, and combine peat biomethane production with humic acid extraction, the effect of the spectral characteristics of humic acid extracted using strong acids from biomethane fermentation peat residue was investigated. The humic acid structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). Fourier transform infrared results showed that the humic acid samples obtained through precipitation with different strong acids were different from the humic acid standard in terms of the functional group content. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the humic acid extracted by HNO3 and H3PO4 had a lower fused ring and a simple molecular structure. In addition, the humic acid precipitated by HNO3 had the lowest E4/E6 ratio and highest molecular weight, along with an aromatic structure. The results showed that HNO3 is the best strong acid for the extraction of humic acid from biomethane fermentation peat residue by alkali extraction and acid precipitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The identification of prognostic genes can help in the clinical management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, there is little overlap in the prognostic genes identified in different NSCLC studies. One reason for this may be the inadequate sample size. Here, the effect of sample size on prognostic genes analysis was investigated based on 515 stage II/III NSCLC cases from two cohorts detected by whole-exome sequencing. Prognostic genes analysis was repeatedly performed 100 times for each sample size level using random resampling methods. In stage II lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC) cases from the TCGA Pan-Lung Cancer cohort, the number of statistically significant prognostic genes first increased with sample size in a power law, then fluctuated steadily, and finally decreased slightly. The power law growth curves were also observed in stage III LUAD and LUSC cases from the TCGA Pan-Lung Cancer cohort and stage III Chinese LUAD cases from the OncoSG cohort. The correlation R2 of the fitted power law growth curves were all greater than 0.99. In addition, at the sample size level where the number of prognostic genes peaked, the mean proportion of true prognostic genes in patients with stage II LUAD and LUSC was 28.32% and 23.12%, which could partly explain the little overlap in prognostic genes between reports. In conclusion, the number of prognostic genes takes a power law growth with the sample size in NSCLC, independent of histopathological subtype, race, and stage. These results also show how sample size affects the reliability of prognostic genes and will aid trial design for genomic mutation-based prognostic studies in NSCLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atrioventricular septal defects (AVSD) are a complicated subtype of congenital heart defects for which the genetic basis is poorly understood. Many studies have demonstrated that the transcription factor SOX7 plays a pivotal role in cardiovascular development. However, whether SOX7 single nucleotide variants are involved in AVSD pathogenesis is unclear. To explore the potential pathogenic role of SOX7 variants, we recruited a total of 100 sporadic non-syndromic AVSD Chinese Han patients and screened SOX7 variants in the patient cohort by targeted sequencing. Functional assays were performed to evaluate pathogenicity of nonsynonymous variants of SOX7. We identified three rare SOX7 variants, c.40C > G, c.542G > A, and c.743C > T, in the patient cohort, all of which were found to be highly conserved in mammals. Compared to the wild type, these SOX7 variants had increased mRNA expression and decreased protein expression. In developing hearts, SOX7 and GATA4 were highly expressed in the region of atrioventricular cushions. Moreover, SOX7 overexpression promoted the expression of GATA4 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells. A chromatin immunoprecipitation assay revealed that SOX7 could directly bind to the GATA4 promoter and luciferase assays demonstrated that SOX7 activated the GATA4 promoter. The SOX7 variants had impaired transcriptional activity relative to wild-type SOX7. Furthermore, the SOX7 variants altered the ability of GATA4 to regulate its target genes. In conclusion, our findings showed that deleterious SOX7 variants potentially contribute to human AVSD by impairing its interaction with GATA4. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of unenhanced and contrast-enhanced MRI in the differentiation of mucosal high-grade neoplasia (MHN) from early invasive squamous cell cancer (EISCC) of the esophagus.Methods: Between March 2015 and January 2019, 72 study participants with MHN (n = 46) and EISCC (n = 26) of the esophagus were enrolled in this prospective study. Postoperative histopathologic analysis was the reference standard. All participants underwent MRI (T2-multi-shot turbo spin-echo sequence (msTSE), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and 3D gradient-echo-based sequence (3D-GRE)). Two radiologists, blinded to participants' data, independently evaluated MRI and assigned MR features including shape (mucosal thickening or focal mass), signal on T2-msTSE and DWI, enhancement degree (intense or slight), and enhancement pattern (homogeneous, heterogeneous, or heart-shaped). Diagnostic performance of the 5 features was compared using the chi-square test; kappa values were assessed for reader performance.Results: Surgery was performed within 3.6 + 3.5 days after MR imaging. Inter-reader agreement on MR features was excellent (kappa value = 0.854, p < 0.001). All 8 mass-like MHN were "heart-shaped" in appearance. The degree of enhancement showed the best diagnosis performance in differentiating between MHN and EISCC of the esophagus. The combination of all 5 features had only borderline improved sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of 100%, 96.2%, and 0.999, respectively, which was not statistically significant compared with the degree of enhancement alone.Conclusions: MRI can differentiate MHN from EISCC in esophagus; the presence of "heart-shaped" appearance favors the diagnosis of MHN.Key Points: • All 8 mass-like MHN showed a "heart-shaped" enhancement pattern which may help differentiating MHN from EISCC. • Degree of enhancement had the best diagnostic performance in differentiating between MHN and EISCC in esophagus. • The combined 5 features (shape, signal in T2-msTSE and DWI, enhancement degree, and enhancement pattern) provided sensitivity, specificity, and AUC of 100%, 96.2%, and 0.999, respectively, which was not statistically significant than tumor enhancement alone in distinguishing MHN from EISCC. Atrial arrhythmia is an important cause of late death in patients after the Fontan-Style operation. However, the detailed electrophysiological characteristics of the post-Fontan atrium and its underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated electrophysiological characteristics and the ionic remodeling in the right atrium (RA) of a canine model after the Fontan operation. We performed the operation of RA to pulmonary artery connection to mimic the Fontan operation. We undertook hemodynamic measurements, cardiac electrophysiological studies, and ion current measurements. The expression of ionic channels was analyzed by PCR and western-blotting. Our Fontan model induced RA hypertension, enlarged the size of RA, and increased atrial fibrosis, representing the classic characteristic of Fontan patients. In the Fontan group, the atrial effective refractory period and the active potential duration were reduced, and the atrial tachycardia has been more often to be induced. The electrical conduction mapping showed that the Fontan group reduced the conduction velocity. The Fontan operation significantly down-regulated the expression of KCND3/Kv4.3, CACNA1C/Cav1.2 and SCN5A, but up-regulated the expression of KCNJ2/Kir2.1. Correspondingly, The Fontan operation reduced transient-outward (Ito) and L-type Ca2 (ICa,L) and INa currents, while increasing the inward-rectifier current (IK1). Thus, the net shortening of the action potential in the post-Fontan atrium is associated with the altered expression of ionic channels which disturbed the balance between inward and outward currents. Taken together, the Fontan operation induces the ionic remodeling, and thus altered electrophysiological characteristics of the right atrium, improving our understanding on the pathophysiology of atrial arrhythmias in Fontan patients. Both miR675 and pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2) contribute to malignant progression of tumor, but its functions in liver cancer stem cells remain unclear. Herein, our findings indicate that miR675 plus PKM2 strongly promotes the growth of liver cancer stem cells. Mechanistically, miR675 plus PKM2 enhances the transcriptional activity of SUV39h2. On the other hand, the excessive SUV39h2 binds to more substrate histone H3, triggering an increase of tri-methylation of histone H3 on the ninth lysine. Furthermore, the tri-methylation of histone 3 on the ninth lysine (H3K9me3)-heterochromatin protein 1 alpha (HP1α) complex is increased when the complex occupancy ability on the C-myc promoter region is raised, recruiting CREB, P300, and RNApolII to the special position that results in C-myc high abundance. The COREX process, which has many advantages, still has high and fluctuating sulfur levels in the hot metal. To overcome the desulfurization problems, several measures were proposed, and the adjustments of chemical compositions of hot metal were explained in the current study. Theoretical calculations and experimental results showed that increments in either of or both silicon and manganese levels were beneficial to the desulfurization from the thermodynamic viewpoint. However, high silicon content would increase the costs of the coal of COREX process and did not meet the requirements of dephosphorization and low slag content in steelmaking. Besides, superfluous manganese was also unnecessary as it would increase the costs of COREX. Therefore, the existing silicon content should be decreased (< 1.5 pct), and the manganese content should be increased in a suitable range (from 0.6 to 0.8 pct) for COREX-3000 in China. AlGaN solar-blind avalanche photodiodes (APDs) with AlInN/AlGaN distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) operated at lower avalanche breakdown voltage are numerically demonstrated. The p-type AlGaN layer and the multiplicative layer with low Al composition are introduced to construct the polarization-induced electric field, which can significantly reduce the avalanche breakdown voltage of the APDs. Calculated results exhibit that the avalanche breakdown voltage of the designed APDs decrease by 13% compared with the conventional device structure. Background and aims: The need for efficient use of phosphorus (P) in agriculture has been highlighted recently by concerns about the finite amount of P fertilizer resources. However, in the Taihu Lake Region (TLR) of China, farmers' injudicious and excessive use of P fertilizer has led to a dramatic spike in P accumulation. Methods: A five-year (ten consecutive crop seasons) pot experiment was conducted using four paddy soils with three P concentrations (2 P-rich, 1 P-moderate, and 1 P-deficient soils) from the TLR under four P fertilization regimes: P fertilization only for the wheat season (PW), P fertilization only for rice season (PR), P fertilization for both rice and wheat seasons (PR + W), and no P fertilization during either season (Pzero; control). Results: Over 5 years, compared to the PR + W treatment, the PW treatment did not decrease crop yield ( P < 0.05) because it could supply enough available P sources (124-210 mg kg labile P and moderately labile P) for crop growth and similar microorganism community composition. Also, compared to the Pzero treatment, applied P fertilization significantly increased the concentration of labile P and moderately labile P. Additionally, applied P fertilization decreased acid phosphatase enzyme activity and increased the total relative abundance of microorganisms significantly in P-rich soil, although they decreased in P-deficient soil. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) showed significant positive correlations with soil labile P ( P < 0.05), which indicated that AMF played important roles in the transformation of P in the soil P pool. Conclusions: P fertilizer applied only for the wheat season may be a viable option for saving P fertilizer and sustaining crop yields in the current rice-wheat rotated system of China, and effective utilization of AMF which are related to P availability in the soil will be important in the future reasearch. To explore the positional relationship between the pulmonary venous confluence-venous vein (PVC-VV) and both the atria in infracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (iTAPVC), using two-dimensional (2D) computerized tomography (CT) reconstruction. Through the 2D reconstruction of enhanced cardiac CT images of patients with iTAPVC, the projection of PVC-VV on coronal axial images was acquired and its location on the bilateral atrial splice was analyzed. Sagittal axial reconstruction was used to identify which atrium had a precise anterior-posterior positional relationship with PVC-VV. The type of iTAPVC, where the projection of PVC-VV was lying on the left atrium, and the left atrium had a precise anterior-posterior positional relationship with PVC-VV, was classified as the left atrial type. If the projection of PVC-VV was lying on the right atrium and the right atrium had a precise anterior-posterior positional relationship with PVC-VV, it was classified as the right atrial type. Finally, if the projection of PVC-VV was lying in the middle of the bilateral atria, and both the atria had precise anterior-posterior positional relationship with PVC-VV, it was referred to as the bilateral atrial type. Upon analysis of the 22 enhanced cardiac CT images, 6 were the left atrial type (27.27 %), 9 were right atrial type (40.91 %), while 7 were of the bilateral atrial type (31.82 %). The positional relationship between PVC-VV and the bilateral atria are variable, and iTAPVC classification using 2D CT reconstruction is an invaluable tool in designing the surgical approaches in iTAPVC. This report summarizes the authors' clinical experience with perventricular closure of the perimembranous ventricular septal defect (PmVSD) using the concentric occluder as a minimally invasive technique without cardiopulmonary bypass and following transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance. Between July 2011 and March 2013, 61 patients with PmVSD underwent perventricular concentric device closure using a minimally invasive inferior sternotomy approach. The basal diameter of the PmVSD ranged from 2.5 to 7 mm. The diameter of the occlusion device waist ranged from 4 to 8 mm. A ventricular septal aneurysm or an adhesive tricuspid valve was present in 49 patients. Multiple orifices in the aneurysm were treated in ten patients, including dispersed orifices in four patients and comparatively concentrated orifices in the remaining six patients. The occlusion devices were deployed via the right ventricle with TEE guidance and no cardiopulmonary bypass. Complete shunt occlusion was achieved for all the patients in the operating room. The orifices of the ventricular septal aneurysm were closed in 46 patients, with the left disc of the concentric devices placed in the aneurysms, whereas the PmVSDs in the remaining 15 patients were closed from the ventricular septal defect (VSD) basal part following the rule that the upper rim of the PmVSD be more than 2 mm from the aortic valve. Ventricular premature beats occurred in one patient. The follow-up period ranged from 1 to 21 months (median 13.5 ± 8.2 months), and the patients had stable heart function postoperatively. None of the patients had more than mild valvular regurgitation, and no worsening regurgitation was observed in those who had tricuspid or aortic regurgitation before surgery. No complete atrioventricular block, position shift of the occlusion devices, thrombosis, or residual VSD occurred during the follow-up period. The perventricular concentric device closure of PmVSD with an inferior sternotomy in selected patients is a safe, feasible, and simple treatment. The concentric device is easier to anchor than the eccentric device and has proved to be a reasonable choice for PmVSD occlusion, especially in patients with a perimembranous aneurysm formation or PmVSD extending to the inflow tract. Hippocampal neuronal apoptosis accompanied by impairment of cognitive function occurs in primary diabetic encephalopathy. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective mechanism of the iridoid glycoside, aucubin, using rats ( n=8). Diabetes mellitus was induced in the rats by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozotocin (60 mg/kg body weight). After 65 d, half of the DM rats were administered aucubin (5 mg/kg; i.p.) for 15 d, yielding treatment DM+A. A third group of rats received no streptozotocin or aucibin, and served as controls (CON). Encephalopathy was assessed using Y-maze behavioral testing. Rats were euthanized on Day 87, and hippocampi were excised for visual (light and transmission electron microscopic) and immunochemical (Western blot; immunohistochemical) assessments of the CA1 subfield for apoptosis and expression of regulatory proteins Bcl-2 and Bax. Treatment responses to all the parameters examined (body weight, plasma glucose, Y-maze error rates, pyramidal cell ultrastructure, proportions of apoptotic cells, levels of expression of Bcl-2 and Bax, and survivability of neuronal cells) were identical: there were highly significant differences between DM and CON groups ( P<0.001), but the effects were significantly moderated ( P<0.01) in DM+A compared with DM. These findings confirm the association of apoptosis with the encephalopathic effects of diabetes mellitus, and suggest a major role of the expression levels of Bcl-2 and Bax in the regulation of apoptotic cell death. Background: Patients with esophageal cancer (EC) undergo endoscopic ultrasound and CT based cancer staging. Recent technical developments allow improved MRI quality with diminished motion artifact that may allow MRI to compare favorable to CT for noninvasive staging. Hence the purpose of the study was to assess image quality and diagnostic accuracy of 3 T MRI versus CT and EUS for preoperative T-staging of potentially resectable esophageal cancer., Methods: Between October-2014 and December-2017, esophageal cancer patients with T-staging by EUS were enrolled in this prospective study. Post-operative histopathologic T-staging was the reference standard. All participants underwent MRI [T2- multi-shot turbo spin echo sequence (msTSE), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and 3D gradient-echo based sequence (3D-GRE)] and CT [non-contrast and multiphase contrast-enhanced CT scanning] 5.6 + 3.6 days after endoscopy. Surgery was performed within 3.6 + 3.5 days after imaging. Two blinded endoscopists (reader 1 and 2) and radiologists (reader 3 and 4) independently evaluated EUS and CT/MRI, respectively. Considering the clinical relevance, patients were dichotomized into early (T1 and T2) vs late (T3 and T4) stage cancer before assessment. For statistical purpose, the binary decision was defined as the ability of the imaging technique to diagnose early stage/not early stage esophageal cancer. Diagnostic performance of EUS, MRI and CT was compared using McNemar's test with Bonferroni correction; kappa values were assessed for reader performance., Results: 74 study participants (60 ± 8 yrs.; 56 men) with esophageal cancer were evaluated, of whom 85%(63/74) had squamous cell carcinoma, 61%(45/74) were at early stage and 39%(29/74) were at late stage cancer, as determined by histopathology. Intra- and Inter-reader agreement for pre-operative vs post-operative T-staging was excellent for all imaging modalities. Compared to CT, MRI showed significantly higher accuracy for both the readers (reader3: 96% vs 82%, p = 0.0038, reader4: 95% vs 80%, p = 0.0076, for MRI vs CT, respectively).
