In this work, we for the first time report the identification of UV filters in the bird eye lens. We found that lenses of some raptors (black kite, common buzzard) and waterfowl (birds from Podicipedidae family) contain unusually high levels of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)—a compound with high absorption in the UV-A range with a maximum at 340 nm. The lens metabolome of these birds also features an extremely low [NAD +]/[NADH] ratio. Chemometric analysis demonstrates that the differences between the metabolomic compositions of lenses with low and high NADH abundances should be attributed to the taxonomic features of bird species rather to the influence of the low [NAD +]/[NADH] ratio. We attributed this observation to the low metabolic activity in lens fiber cells, which make up the bulk of the lens tissue. Photochemical measurements show that properties of NADH as a UV filter are as good as that of UV filters in the human lens, including strong absorption in the UV-A spectral region, high photostability under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions, low yields of triplet state, fluorescence, and radicals under irradiation. Lenticular UV filters protect the retina and the lens from photo-induced damages and improve the visual acuity by reducing chromatic aberrations; therefore, the results obtained contribute to our understanding of the extremely high acuity of the raptor vision. During avian influenza virus surveillance (AIV) carried out in September 2019 in the Lake Baikal basin (Northeast Asia, Russia), one cloacal swab was taken from each of 144 wild birds. The incidence of avian infections caused by viruses of the I Orthomyxoviridae i and I Paramyxoviridae i families appears to be seasonal, with the highest isolation rate being in juvenile birds in the fall of the year (Dorzhiev et al., [3]). The black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) is a vulnerable species, breeding exclusively on the high-altitude wetlands of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Bird species harbor diverse communities of microorganisms within their gastrointestinal tracts, which have important roles in the health, nutrition, and physiology of birds. Hitherto, virtually nothing was known about the gut microbial communities associated with wild black-necked cranes. For the first time, this study characterized the gut microbial community compositions, diversity, and functions of black-necked cranes from six wintering areas in China using the Illumina Miseq platform. The taxonomic results revealed that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the four most abundant phyla in the gut of black-necked cranes. At the genus level, 11 genera including Lactobacillus, Pseudomonas, Carnobacterium, Pantoea, Enterococcus, Erwinia, Turicibacter, Bacillus, Phenylobacterium, Sanguibacter, and Psychrobacter were dominant. The differences in the gut microbial community alpha and the beta diversities of black-necked cranes among the six wintering areas were investigated. Furthermore, the representative microbial taxa and their predicted functions in each wintering location were also determined. These data represent the first analysis of the gut microbiome of black-necked cranes, providing a baseline for further microbiological studies and a foundation for the conservation of this bird. As one of the dominant waterfowl species of wetland areas in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, since 2003, artificial rearing of bar-headed geese (Anser indicus) has increased in several provinces of China for the purpose of conservation and economic development. In this study, we systematically characterized the microbial community diversity, compositions and predicted functions of semi-artificially reared bar-headed geese by sampling five different gut locations (the oropharynxs, crops, gizzards, ceca, and cloacae) along the gastrointestinal tracts of three individuals. Alpha diversity analyses showed that the gizzards had the richest species diversity and that the ceca had the least. Beta diversity analyses showed that the cecal samples formed their own cluster, while samples from the oropharynxs, crops, gizzards, and cloacae overlapped with each other. At the phylum level, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria constituted the top five dominant phyla among all five gastrointestinal sections. At the genus level, a total of 10 genera with proportions above 2.5% were found to be significantly different among the gastrointestinal sections. Furthermore, 53 genera were detected in all gastrointestinal sections of bar-headed geese. PICRUSt data also predicted a group of microbial functions overrepresented in the different segments of the gastrointestinal tracts. Understanding the microbiota along the bar-headed geese gastrointestinal tracts is essential for future microbiological study of this bird and may contribute to the development of geese husbandry. The complete genome sequence was determined for avian paramyxovirus (APMV-6) serotype 6 strain teal/Chany/455/2009, isolated from a teal ( Anas crecca) in Siberia. Siberia is crossed by four major migration flyways and represents the major breeding area for many wild bird species in the Palearctic. Strain teal/Chany/455/2009 is genetically closely related to Kazakh and Chinese strains and belongs to the genetic group of duck/Hong Kong/18/199/77-like APMV-6 viruses. Three viruses included in the study were isolated from dead birds (A/duck/Omsk/1822/2006, A/chicken/Reshoty/02/2006, and A/duck/Tuva/01/2006), whereas the virus A/common gull/Chany/P/2006 was isolated from an apparently healthy gull during outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Russia in 2006. The intravenous pathogenicity index (IVPI) of viruses A/duck/Omsk/1822/2006, A/chicken/Reshoty/02/2006, and A/duck/Tuva/01/2006 ranged from 2.7 to 3.0, while the virus A/common gull/Chany/P/2006 had a markedly lower IVPI of 1.7. The virus A/common gull/Chany/P/2006 had a unique pattern of six amino acid substitutions in the regions of viral proteins crucial for virulence of H5N1 viruses. Hitherto, virtually nothing is known about the microbial communities related to the bird species in the family Corvidae. To fill this gap, the present study was conducted to provide a baseline description of the gut microbiota of wild red-billed choughs (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax). In this study, microbiota from four gastrointestinal locations (oropharynx, gizzard, small intestine, and large intestine) of three wild red-billed choughs were analyzed using the Illumina MiSeq sequencing platform by targeting the V4–V5 regions of the 16S rRNA genes. The gut microbiota of the red-billed choughs were dominated by the phylum Firmicutes (59.56%), followed by Proteobacteria (16.56%), Bacteroidetes (13.86%), and Actinobacteria (7.03%), which were commonly detected in avian gut ecosystems. Genus-level compositions were found to be largely dominated by Lactobacillus (18.21%), Weissella (12.37%), Erysipelatoclostridium (6.94%), Bacteroides (6.63%), Escherichia-Shigella (5.15%), Leuconostoc (4.60%), Proteus (3.33%), Carnobacterium (2.71%), Lactococcus (1.69%), and Enterococcus (1.63%). The overall intestinal microbiota was enriched with functions related to ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, DNA repair and recombination proteins, purine metabolism, ribosome, transcription factors, pyrimidine metabolism, peptidases, and two-component system. In terms of four different gastrointestinal locations, hierarchical clustering analysis and principal coordinate analysis showed that microbial communities of the oropharynx, gizzard, small intestine, and large intestine formed four separated clusters. A total of 825 OTUs and 382 genera were detected in all four gastrointestinal locations, which were considered as the major microbes in the intestines of red-billed choughs. Coexistence of lactic acid bacteria and potential pathogens in the gut environments of red-billed choughs required further investigations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
