COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, manifests with differing severity across distinct patient subgroups, with outcomes influenced by underlying comorbidities such as cancer, which may cause functional and compositional alterations of the immune system during tumor progression. We aimed to investigate the association of SARS-CoV-2 infection and its complications with cancer in a large autopsy series and the role of COVID-19 in the fatal sequence leading to death. A total of 2641 adult autopsies were investigated, 539 of these were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Among the total number of patients analyzed, 829 had active cancer. Overall, the cohort included 100 patients who simultaneously had cancer and SARS-CoV-2 infection. The course of COVID-19 was less severe in cancer patients, including a significantly lower incidence of viral and bacterial pneumonia, occurring more frequently as a contributory disease or coexisting morbidity, or as SARS-CoV-2 positivity without viral disease. SARS-CoV-2 positivity was more frequent among non-metastatic than metastatic cancer cases, and in specific tumor types including hematologic malignancies. COVID-19 was more frequently found to be directly involved in the fatal sequence in patients undergoing active anticancer therapy, but less frequently in perioperative status, suggesting that the underlying malignancy and consequent surgery are more important factors leading to death perioperatively than viral disease. The course of COVID-19 in cancer patients was milder and balanced during the pandemic. This may be due to relative immunosuppressed status, and the fact that even early/mild viral infections can easily upset their condition, leading to death from their underlying cancer or its complications. The aim of our study was to determine the efficacy of utilizing cryopreserved common carp sperm (in comparison to fresh sperm) for propagation at a Hungarian aquaculture facility. The sperm was frozen in 5 mL straws using an extender method that was previously tested in common carp. Sperm motility was monitored using a computer-assisted sperm analysis system. The hatching and malformation rates among the specimens were recorded before the stocking of larvae in both groups. The growth (body weight, total length) and survival rates of the fish were measured during the pre-nursing (from May to June: between 1 and 26 days post hatching) and grow-out periods (from June to October: between 26 and 105 days post hatching) of the same year. The fresh sperm, which was collected and pooled prior to fertilization, showed high MOT (97%), pMOT (92%), VCL (106 µm s−1), LIN (75%), and ALH (1.84 µm). Prior to the fertilization trial of the cryopreserved sperm, low MOT (34%), pMOT (14%), and VCL (61 µm s−1) values were observed in frozen-thawed sperm. A significantly higher hatching rate was measured in the fresh sperm group (87%) when compared to the cryopreserved sperm group (42%). No significant difference in the overall malformation rate was observed in larvae originating from either the fresh or frozen sperm. A significant difference between the two test groups was observed in the incidence of deformed tails (fresh: 20%, cryopreserved: 55%). Except for one sampling period, no significant difference in the body weight and total length of the fish larvae was found between the two groups throughout the pre-nursing and grow-out periods. A significantly higher larvae survival rate was noted in the fresh sperm (72%) as compared to the cryopreserved group (43%) by the end of the pre-nursing stage. However, no significant difference in survival rate was observed for the cryopreserved sperm (96%) in comparison to the fresh sperm (95%) by the end of the grow-out stage. The results of this study showed, for the first time in large-scale pond culturing, an equal growth and viability in larvae propagated from cryopreserved sperm when compared to fresh sperm (despite the limited available rearing ponds provided by the commercial company). Answering a question of Conway and Guy (SIAM Rev. 11:78-82, 1969), Lángi (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 54: 501-516, 2022) proved the existence of a monostable polyhedron with n-fold rotational symmetry for any n ≥ 3 , and arbitrarily close to a Euclidean ball. In this paper we strengthen this result by characterizing the possible symmetry groups of all mono-monostatic smooth convex bodies and convex polyhedra. The most severe alterations in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection are seen in the lung. However, other organs also are affected. Here, we report histopathologic findings in the liver and detection of viral proteins and RNA in COVID-19 autopsies performed at the Semmelweis University (Budapest, Hungary). Between March 2020 through March 2022, 150 autopsies on patients who died of COVID-19 were analyzed. Cause-of-death categories were formed based on the association with SARS-CoV-2 as strong, contributive, or weak. Samples for histopathologic study were obtained from all organs, fixed in formalin, and embedded in paraffin (FFPE). Immunohistochemical study (IHC) to detect SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and nucleocapsid protein (NP), CD31, claudin-5, factor VIII, macrosialin (CD68), and cytokeratin 7, with reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), and in situ hybridization (ISH, RNAscope®) for SARS-CoV-2 RNA were conducted using FFPE samples of livers taken from 20 autopsies performed ≤ 2 days postmortem. All glass slides were scanned; the digital images were evaluated by semiquantitative scoring and scores were analyzed statistically. Steatosis, single-cell and focal/zonal hepatocyte necrosis, portal fibrosis, and chronic inflammation were found in varying percentages. Sinusoidal ectasia, endothelial cell disruption, and fibrin-filled sinusoids were seen in all cases; these were assessed semiquantitatively for severity (SEF scored). SEF scores did not correlate with cause-of-death categories (p = 0.92) or with severity of lung alterations (p = 0.96). SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in 13/20 cases by PCR and in 9/20 by ISH, with IHC demonstration of spike protein in 4/20 cases and NP in 15/20. Viral RNA and proteins were located in endothelial and Kupffer cells, and in portal macrophages, but not in hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. In conclusion, endothelial damage (SEF scores) was the most common alteration in the liver and was a characteristic, but not specific alteration in COVID-19, suggesting an important role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19-associated liver disease. Detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and viral proteins in liver non-parenchymal cells suggests that while the most extended primary viral cytotoxic effect occurs in the lung, viral components are present in other organs too, as in the liver. The necrosis/apoptosis and endothelial damage associated with viral infection in COVID-19 suggest that those patients who survive more severe COVID-19 may face prolonged liver repair and accordingly should be followed regularly in the post-COVID period. Studies of rocking motion aim to explain the remarkable earthquake resistance of rocking structures. State-of-the-art assessment methods are mostly based on planar models, despite ongoing efforts to understand the significance of three-dimensionality. Impacts are essential components of rocking motion. We present experimental measurements of free-rocking blocks on a rigid surface, focusing on extreme sensitivity of impacts to geometric imperfections, unpredictability, and the emergence of three-dimensional motion via spontaneous symmetry breaking. These results inspire the development of new impact models of three-dimensional facet and edge impacts of polyhedral objects. Our model is a natural generalization of existing planar models based on the seminal work of George W. Housner. Model parameters are estimated empirically for rectangular blocks. From March through December 2020, 100 autopsies were performed (Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary), with chart review, of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection demonstrated by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction testing (mean age, 74.73 years, range 40–102 years; 50 males, mean age 71.96 years, and 50 females, mean age 77.5 years). Classified by the date of death, 21 cases were from the pandemic's "first wave" (March through July) and 79 from the "second wave" (August through December). Three mortality categories were defined by relevance of SARS-CoV-2 infection: (1) "strong" association (n=57), in which COVID-19 was primary responsible for death; (2) "contributive" association (n=27), in which a pre-existing condition independent of COVID-19 was primary responsible for death, albeit with substantial COVID-19 co-morbidity; (3) "weak" association (n=16), in which COVID-19 was minimally or not at all responsible for death. Distributions among categories differed between the first wave, in which the "contributive" association cases dominated (strong: 24%, contributive: 48%, weak: 28%), and the second wave, in which the "strong" association cases dominated (strong: 66%, contributive: 21%, weak: 13%). Charted co-morbidities included hypertension (85 %), cardiovascular diseases (71 %), diabetes (40 %), cerebrovascular diseases (31 %), chronic respiratory diseases (30 %), malignant tumors (20 %), renal diseases (19 %), diseases of the central nervous system (15 %), and liver diseases (6 %). Autopsy evaluation analyzed alterations on macroscopy as well as findings on microscopy of scanned and scored sections of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples (50–80 blocks/case). Severity of histological abnormalities in the lung differed significantly between "strong" and "contributive" (p<0.0001) and between "strong" and "weak" categories (p<0.0001). Abnormalities included diffuse alveolar damage, macrophage infiltration, and vascular and alveolar fibrin aggregates (lung), with macro- and microvascular thrombi and thromboemboli (lung, kidney, liver). In conclusion, autopsies clarified in what extent COVID-19 was responsible for death, demonstrated the pathological background of clinical signs and symptoms, and identified organ alterations that led to the death. Clinicopathologic correlation, with conference discussions of severity of co-morbidities and of direct pathological signs of disease, permitted accurate categorization of cause of death and COVID-19 association as "strong," "contributive," or "weak." Lung involvement, with reduced ventilatory capacity, was the primary cause of death in the "strong" and "contributive" categories. Shifts in distribution among categories, with "strong" association between COVID-19 and death dominating in the second wave, may reflect improved clinical management of COVID-19 as expertise grew. Sperm handling procedures and its usage for in vitro fertilization are crucial for standardized experimental operations on evaluation of reproductive performance, gamete quality, and optimization of fertilization protocols. In our study, the changes in perch sperm motility parameters within 6-h chilled storage and using 4 different activating solutions were compared. Eight different sperm-to-egg ratio was also compared during fertilization. Sperm activated with modified activating solution for cyprinids (78±11%), common perch activating solution (68±16%), modified Lahnsteiner activating solution (75±16%), and Woynárovich solution (76±13%) showed similar progressive motility at 10 s after activation. At 30 s after activation, progressive motility decreased below 5%, regardless the activating solution used. Progressive motility decreased significantly already after 2 h of storage (51±19%) in comparison with 0 h (78±5%). The highest average fertilization rate (using common perch activating solution) was observed with a sperm-to-egg ratio 2.5×105:1 (80±9%), where the smallest variability in the values was also recorded (coefficient of variation: 11%). However, no significant difference was detected among the 8 sperm-to-egg ratio groups. According to our findings, undiluted fresh perch sperm is recommended to use in 1 h post-stripping. Modified Lahnsteiner's activating solution can be applied efficiently for quality assessment where common perch activating solution is applicable for fertilization in Eurasian perch. Introduction: It is well established that periodontal disease (PD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) can have a detrimental effect on each other's disease course, and that cigarette smoking exacerbates both conditions. However, literature on the periodontal status of smokers with DM is scarce, and the studies conducted to date did not use healthy controls or non-smokers with DM as controls. Consequently, the individual effects of smoking and DM on PD are difficult to untangle and estimate. Methods: A total of 128 participants were recruited to this study and their data analyzed. They were assigned to four groups: smoking patients with DM (SDM); non-smoking patients with DM (NSDM); smokers without DM (control group, SC) and (4) non-smokers without DM (control group, NSC). Each group consisted of 32 age-matched participants. The periodontal status of the participants was assessed by full oral examination. To express periodontal status, we used the four-stage classification introduced by Fernandes and colleagues (J Periodontol. 80(7):1062–1068, 2009). The control of DM was estimated by measuring hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels in the peripheral blood. Results: A significant difference in the severity of PD was found between the SC and NSC groups (p = 0.027) and between the NSC and SDM groups (p = 0.000), while the difference between the NSDM and SDM groups approached significance (p = 0.052). No person in the smoker groups could be classified as having a healthy periodontal status. The four-stage classification followed a normal distribution in the healthy, non-smoking controls (NSC). Smoking caused a shift toward medium-severe PD, while a marked shift toward the most severe stage was observed when both smoking and DM were present (SDM). There was no significant association between the type of DM and periodontal status, nor between diabetes control and the severity of PD. Persons in the SDM group had significantly fewer teeth than those in the NSC group (mean ± standard deviation: 16.0 ± 7.9 vs. 20.7 ± 5.6; p = 0.02). Conclusion: Smoking damages the periodontium of even healthy individuals, but the damage is multiplied in a smoker who has DM, even though the effect of DM alone on periodontium health is relatively mild. Our results suggest a synergy between DM and smoking in terms of damage to the periodontal tissues, but the limited sample size of this study does not allow any hard conclusion to be drawn. After months of restrictive containment efforts to fight the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic, European countries are planning to reopen. To support the process, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among the Hungarian population to estimate the prevalence of infectious cases and prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure. A representative sample (n = 17,787) for the Hungarian population of 14 years or older living in private households (n = 8,283,810) was selected. The study was performed within 16 days after 50 days of restrictions, when the number of confirmed cases was stable low. Naso- and oropharyngeal smears and blood samples were collected for PCR and antibody testing. The testing was accompanied by a questionnaire about symptoms, comorbidities, and contacts. Design-based prevalence estimates were calculated. In total, 10,474 individuals (67.7% taken into account a sample frame error of 2315) of the selected sample participated in the survey. Of the tested individuals, 3 had positive PCR and 69 had positive serological test. Population estimate of the number of SARS-CoV-2 infection and seropositivity were 2421 and 56,439, respectively, thus active infection rate (2.9/10,000) and the prevalence of prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure (68/10,000) was low. Self-reported loss of smell or taste and body aches were significantly more frequent among those with SARS-CoV-2. In this representative, cross-sectional survey of the Hungarian population with a high participation rate, the overall active infection rate was low in sync with the prevalence of prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Introduction: Type 2 diabetic patients suffering from severe hyperglycemia are often assigned a regimen involving multiple daily injections (MDI) of insulin. If the glucose toxicity resolves, the regimen can potentially be simplified, but there are no guidelines for this, and many patients are left on the MDI regimen. We aimed to prospectively examine the safety and efficacy of switching from MDI to once-daily IDegLira, a fixed-ratio combination of insulin degludec and liraglutide, in relatively well controlled (HbA1c ≤ 7.5%) subjects with type 2 diabetes on a low total daily insulin dose (TDD). Methods: 62 adults with type 2 diabetes (baseline age 64.06 ± 10.24 years, HbA1c 6.42 ± 0.68%, BMI 33.53 ± 6.90 kg/m2, body weight 93.81 ± 19.26 kg, TDD 43.31 ± 10.99 IU/day, insulin requirement 0.47 ± 0.13 IU/kg, duration of diabetes 10.84 ± 7.50 years, mean ± SD) treated with MDI ± metformin were enrolled in our study. Previous insulins were stopped and once-daily IDegLira was started. IDegLira was titrated by the patients to achieve a self-measured pre-breakfast blood glucose concentration of < 6 mmol/L. Results: After a mean follow-up period of 99.2 days, mean HbA1c had decreased by 0.30% to 6.12 ± 0.65% (p < 0.0001), body weight had decreased by 3.11 kg to 90.70 ± 19.12 kg (p < 0.0001), and BMI had reduced to 32.39 ± 6.71 kg/m2 (p < 0.0001). After 3 months of treatment, the mean dose of IDegLira was 20.76 ± 6.60 units and the mean insulin requirement had decreased to 0.23 ± 0.08 IU/kg. IDegLira ± metformin combination therapy was found to be safe and generally well tolerated. During the month before the baseline visit, 28 patients (45%) had at least one episode of documented or symptomatic hypoglycemia, while only 6 (9.67%) patients reported a total of 13 documented episodes during the follow-up. Conclusion: In everyday clinical practice, switching from low-dose MDI to IDegLira in patients with well-controlled type 2 diabetes is safe, may result in weight loss and similar or better glycemic control, and substantially reduces the insulin requirement. Background: Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is genetically one of the least heterogeneous ciliopathies, resulting primarily from mutations of PKHD1. Nevertheless, 13-20% of patients diagnosed with ARPKD are found not to carry PKHD1 mutations by sequencing. Here, we assess whether PKHD1 copy number variations or second locus mutations explain these cases.Methods: Thirty-six unrelated patients with the clinical diagnosis of ARPKD were screened for PKHD1 point mutations and copy number variations. Patients without biallelic mutations were re-evaluated and screened for second locus mutations targeted by the phenotype, followed, if negative, by clinical exome sequencing.Results: Twenty-eight patients (78%) carried PKHD1 point mutations, three of whom on only one allele. Two of the three patients harbored in trans either a duplication of exons 33-35 or a large deletion involving exons 1-55. All eight patients without PKHD1 mutations (22%) harbored mutations in other genes (PKD1 (n = 2), HNF1B (n = 3), NPHP1, TMEM67, PKD1/TSC2). Perinatal respiratory failure, a kidney length > +4SD and early-onset hypertension increase the likelihood of PKHD1-associated ARPKD. A patient compound heterozygous for a second and a last exon truncating PKHD1 mutation (p.Gly4013Alafs*25) presented with a moderate phenotype, indicating that fibrocystin is partially functional in the absence of its C-terminal 62 amino acids.Conclusions: We found all ARPKD cases without PKHD1 point mutations to be phenocopies, and none to be explained by biallelic PKHD1 copy number variations. Ideally rigid objects establish sustained contact with one another via complete chatter (a.k.a. Zeno behavior), i.e., an infinite sequence of collisions accumulating in finite time. Alternatively, such systems may also exhibit a finite sequence of collisions followed by separation (sometimes called incomplete chatter). Earlier works concerning the chattering of slender rods in two dimensions determined the exact range of model parameters, where complete chatter is possible. We revisit and slightly extend these results. Then, the bulk of the paper examines the chattering of three-dimensional objects with multiple points hitting an immobile plane almost simultaneously. In contrast to rods, the motion of these systems is complex, nonlinear, and sensitive to initial conditions and model parameters due to the possibility of various impact sequences. These difficulties explain why we model this phenomenon as a non-deterministic discrete dynamical system. We simplify the analysis by assuming linearized kinematics, frictionless interaction, by neglecting the effect of external forces, and by investigating objects with rotational symmetry. Application and extension of the theory of common invariant cones of multiple linear operators enable us to find sufficient conditions of the existence of initial conditions, which give rise to complete chatter. Additional analytical and numerical investigations predict that our sufficient conditions are indeed exact; moreover, solving a simple eigenvalue problem appears to be enough to judge the possibility of complete chatter. Background: After their death, Scots pine trees can remain standing for decades and sometimes up to 200 years, forming long-lasting and ecologically important structures in boreal forest landscapes. Standing dead pines decay very slowly and with time develop into 'kelo' trees, which are characterized by hard wood with silvery-colored appearance. These kelo trees represent an ecologically important, long lasting and visually striking element of the structure of natural pine-dominated forests in boreal Fennoscandia that is nowadays virtually absent from managed forest landscapes. Methods: We examined and mapped the amount, structural features, site characteristics and spatial distribution of dead standing pine trees over a ten hectare area in an unmanaged boreal forest landscape in the Kalevala National Park in Russian Viena Karelia. Results: The mean basal area of dead standing pine trees in the forested part of the landscape was 1.7 m∙ha and the estimated volume 12.7 m∙ha. From the total number of standing dead pine trees 65% were kelo trees, with a basal area of 1.1 m∙ha and volume of 8.0 m∙ha, the remainder consisting of standing dead pines along the continuum between a recently dead tree and a kelo tree. Overall, standing dead pines were distributed throughout the study area, but there was a tendency towards spatial clustering up to <100 m distances. Standing dead pines were most commonly situated on flat ground or in the mid slope in the local topography. In addition, standing dead pines contributed to substrate diversity also by commonly having charred wood and broken tops. Based on the presence of dead pine snags in different stage of transition from a recently dead pine to a kelo with silvery surface, it seems evident that the process of kelo recruitment was continuously in action in the studied landscape. Conclusions: Kelo trees are an omnipresent feature in natural pine-dominated forest landscapes with important contribution to forest structural and substrate diversity. Because of their longevity and extremely slow turnover dynamics and importance for biodiversity, protection of vulnerable kelo tree populations, and ensuring their continuous recruitment, should be of high priority in forest restoration and sustainable management. We investigate the dynamics of finite degree-of-freedom, planar mechanical systems with multiple sliding, unilateral frictional point contacts. A complete classification of systems with 2 sliding contacts is given. The contact-mode-based approach of rigid body mechanics is combined with linear stability analysis using a compliant contact model to determine the feasibility and the stability of every possible contact mode in each class. Special forms of non-stationary contact dynamics including 'impact without collision' and 'reverse chattering' are also investigated. Many types of solution inconsistency and indeterminacy are identified and new phenomena related to Painlevé's non-existence and non-uniqueness paradoxes are discovered. Among other results, we show that the non-existence paradox is not fully resolvable by considering impulsive contact forces. These findings contribute to a growing body of evidence that rigid body mechanics cannot be developed into a complete and self-consistent theory in the presence of contacts and friction. Lyapunov stability of a mechanical system means that the dynamic response stays bounded in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of a static equilibrium configuration under small perturbations in positions and velocities. This type of stability is highly desired in robotic applications that involve multiple unilateral contacts. Nevertheless, Lyapunov stability analysis of such systems is extremely difficult, because even small perturbations may result in hybrid dynamics where the solution involves many non-smooth transitions between different contact states. This paper concerns Lyapunov stability analysis of a planar rigid body with two frictional unilateral contacts under inelastic impacts, for a general class of equilibrium configurations under a constant external load. The hybrid dynamics of the system under contact transitions and impacts is formulated, and a Poincaré map at two-contact states is introduced. Using invariance relations, this Poincaré map is reduced into two semi-analytic scalar functions that entirely encode the dynamic behavior of solutions under any small initial perturbation. These two functions enable determination of Lyapunov stability or instability for almost any equilibrium state. The results are demonstrated via simulation examples and by plotting stability and instability regions in two-dimensional parameter spaces that describe the contact geometry and external load. Colorectal carcinoma rarely affects children and has a dismal prognosis with 5-year survival rates as low as 2.5%-7% despite apparently radical surgery. Here we report the case of an adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon in a 15-year-old girl preceded by uncertain abdominal complaints of 5 years' duration. Pathological work-up revealed a tumour with lymph node metastases (pT3NI). Immunohistochemical evidence of p53 overexpression by the tumour cells raised the suspicion of an underlying Li-Fraumeni syndrome. In addition, there were aphthoid ulceration, fissuration of the non-tumorous mucosa, along with a mixed transmural infiltrate composed of macrophages, eosinophils, and non-typical giant cells, which were compatible with simultaneous Crohn's disease. Anamnestic data concerning the occurrence of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal carcinoma in the patient's relatives were non-contributory. In contrast to gastric dysfunction, diabetes-related functional impairments of the small and large intestine have been studied less intensively. The gastrointestinal tract accomplishes several functions, such as mixing and propulsion of luminal content, absorption and secretion of ions, water, and nutrients, defense against pathogens, and elimination of waste products. Diverse functions of the gut are regulated by complex interactions among its functional elements, including gut microbiota. The network-forming tissues, the enteric nervous system) and the interstitial cells of Cajal, are definitely impaired in diabetic patients, and their loss of function is closely related to the symptoms in diabetes, but changes of other elements could also play a role in the development of diabetes mellitus-related motility disorders. Seriously ill patients with influenza may be unable to take oral medication. The safety of intravenous oseltamivir was evaluated in adults and adolescents. This prospective, part-randomized study enrolled hospitalized patients aged ≥13 years with clinical or laboratory-confirmed influenza, who started study medication within 144 h of illness onset. Patients with normal renal function received oseltamivir 100 or 200 mg every 12 h for 5 days by slow intravenous infusion. Patients with renal impairment received lower doses, appropriate to the degree of impairment. Blood samples were taken for pharmacokinetics, and nasal swabs were taken to monitor viral shedding and resistance [reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and culture]. Adverse events (AEs) were monitored for 30 days from treatment initiation. Of the 118 patients enrolled, 103 had normal renal function. On day 1, 64 patients had laboratory-confirmed influenza. Ninety-four (80 %) patients completed 5 days of oseltamivir treatment (32 intravenous only). Sixty-eight and 13 patients reported on-treatment AEs and serious AEs (SAEs), respectively (62 and nine during intravenous dosing, respectively). For 33 and six patients, these AEs and SAEs were considered treatment-related (31 and five during intravenous dosing, respectively); 11 patients had AEs causing treatment withdrawal. Five patients died. Adequate systemic exposure to oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) was achieved at the intravenous doses tested. Oseltamivir-resistant viruses (H275Y) were detected in two patients. In seriously ill, hospitalized patients with/without renal impairment, intravenous oseltamivir was not associated with adverse safety findings at the dosages tested and achieved systemic OC exposures at least as high as the approved oral dose. The regulation of gastrointestinal motility mainly involves the smooth muscle, neural (extrinsic and intrinsic), and hormonal elements, the glial cells, and the interstitial cells of Cajal. An orchestrated function of all these components is required for the appropriate propulsive movement of the food in the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroparesis, a pathological slowing-down of gastric emptying, is a result of the damage to the tissue elements involved in the regulation of motility. Gastroparesis is one of the well-known complications of long-standing diabetes mellitus. Although it is rarely a life-threatening complication, it has a deteriorating effect on the quality of life, leads to unpredictable oscillation of the blood glucose level, and increases the time required for the absorption of food and medicines. This review describes the clinical characteristics of diabetic gastroparesis and summarizes the organic and functional motility abnormalities caused by this complication. The clinical experience of the significant difference in iron metabolism between multiple myeloma and myelodysplasia prompted us to analyse patients according to mutation frequency in the hemochromatosis gene (HFE) known to participate in the regulation of iron metabolism. HFE genotyping results were also evaluated in view of the clinical data in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. 49 patients with MM were compared to 61 patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) concerning the incidence of two genetic variants of the HFE gene (C282Y and H63D) identified with PCR-RFLP. Data of serum iron, transferrin saturation, consumed blood units and initial white blood cell counts (WBC) were analysed in relation to the HFE genotype status. 30 out of the 61 MDS patients (49%) and only 9 out of the 49 MM patients (20%) were positive for either HFE variant. Serum iron and transferrin saturation levels were all normal in MM and elevated in MDS patients. The initial WBC were significantly lower in the minority of MM patients who were at the same time heterozygous for the HFE gene variants. We found significant differences in the frequencies of the HFE genetic variants between MDS and MM patients with strong correlation to their iron metabolism. The low WBC in HFE positive MM patients unrelated to bone marrow infiltration rate might raise the suspicion of co-existent myelodysplasia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lhcb1-2 and PsbS proteins of photosystem II (PSII) have important roles in photoprotective thermal energy dissipation of the absorbed excess light energy. The light responses of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were analyzed to examine how the absence of Lhcb1-2 or PsbS proteins can modify the energy allocation patterns of absorbed light energy in PSII using an antisense construct of lhcb2 and a psbS deletion ( npq4- 1) mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana. Both mutants exhibit reduced Stern-Volmer non-photochemical chlorophyll fluorescence quenching (NPQ). Here, we have adopted an approach, presented by Hendrickson et al. (Photosynth Res 82:73-81, ), to gain a better insight into the mechanism of the NPQ in these mutants. We have found no significant differences in the quantum yields of photochemical energy conversion (Φ) between the mutants and the wild type. Nevertheless, as it was expected, the fraction of the energy, which is dissipated as heat via regulated pathways in PSII (Φ) for both mutants, were reduced as compared to the wild type. In a complementary way, the extent of non-regulated non-photochemical energy loss in PSII (Φ) for both mutants was significantly higher than that in the wild type. In photosynthesis research, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is an indispensable tool to probe molecular architecture at virtually all levels of structural complexity. At the molecular level, the chirality of the molecule results in intrinsic CD; pigment-pigment interactions in protein complexes and small aggregates can give rise to excitonic CD bands, while 'psi-type' CD signals originate from large, densely packed chiral aggregates. It has been well established that anisotropic CD (ACD), measured on samples with defined non-random orientation relative to the propagation of the measuring beam, carries specific information on the architecture of molecules or molecular macroassemblies. However, ACD is usually combined with linear dichroism and can be distorted by instrumental imperfections, which given the strong anisotropic nature of photosynthetic membranes and complexes, might be the reason why ACD is rarely studied in photosynthesis research. In this study, we present ACD spectra, corrected for linear dichroism, of isolated intact thylakoid membranes of granal chloroplasts, washed unstacked thylakoid membranes, photosystem II (PSII) membranes (BBY particles), grana patches, and tightly stacked lamellar macroaggregates of the main light-harvesting complex of PSII (LHCII). We show that the ACD spectra of face- and edge-aligned stacked thylakoid membranes and LHCII lamellae exhibit profound differences in their psi-type CD bands. Marked differences are also seen in the excitonic CD of BBY and washed thylakoid membranes. Magnetic CD (MCD) spectra on random and aligned samples, and the largely invariable nature of the MCD spectra, despite dramatic variations in the measured isotropic and anisotropic CD, testify that ACD can be measured without substantial distortions and thus employed to extract detailed information on the (supra)molecular organization of photosynthetic complexes. Invasive generalist ectoparasites provide a tool to study factors affecting expansion rates. An increase in the number of host species may facilitate geographic range expansion by increasing the number of suitable habitats and by affecting local extinction and colonization rates. A geographic perspective on parasite host specificity and its implications on range expansion are, however, insufficiently understood. We conducted a field study to explore if divergent host specificity could explain the observed variation in expansion rates between Fennoscandian populations of the deer ked ( Lipoptena cervi), which is a blood-feeding ectoparasitic fly of cervids. We found that the rapidly expanding eastern population in Finland appears to specialize on moose, whereas the slowly expanding western population in Norway breeds successfully on both moose and roe deer. The eastern population was also found to utilize the wild forest reindeer as an auxiliary host, but this species is apparently of low value for L. cervi in terms of adult maintenance, reproductive output and offspring quality. Abundant numbers of roe deer and white-tailed deer were observed to be apparently uninfected in Finland, suggesting that host use is not a plastic response to host availability, but rather a consequence of population-level evolutionary changes. Locally compatible hosts were found to be the ones sharing a long history with the deer ked in the area. Cervids that sustained adult deer keds also allowed successful reproduction. Thus, host use is probably determined by the ability of the adult to exploit particular host species. We conclude that a wide host range alone does not account for the high expansion rate or wide geographic distribution of the deer ked, although loose ecological requirements would increase habitat availability. Mechanical constraints have a strong influence on the dynamics and structure of granular aggregations. The contact forces within dense suspensions of active particles may give rise to intriguing phenomena, including anomalous density fluctuations, long-range orientational ordering, and spontaneous pattern formation. Various authors have proposed that these physical phenomena contribute to the ability of animal groups to move coherently. Our systematic numerical simulations confirm that spontaneous interactions of elongated individuals can trigger oriented motion in small groups. They are, however, insufficient in larger ones, despite their significant imprint on the group's internal structure. It is also demonstrated that preferred directions of motion of a minority of group members can be communicated to others solely by mechanical interactions. Enhancement of noisy image data is a very challenging issue in many research and application areas. In the last few years, non-linear filters, feature extraction, high dynamic range imaging methods based on soft computing models have been shown to be very effective in removing noise without destroying the useful information contained in the image data. In this paper new image processing techniques are introduced in the above mentioned fields, thus contributing to the variety of advantageous possibilities to be applied. The main intentions of the presented algorithms are (1) to improve the quality of the image from the point of view of the aim of the processing, (2) to support the performance, and parallel with it (3) to decrease the complexity of further processing using the results of the image processing phase. Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography (VUS) is becoming more widely used for the diagnosis of vesicoureteric reflux (VUR). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity of VUS using a second-generation ultrasound (US) contrast agent and compare it with standard fluoroscopic voiding cystourethrography (VCUG). A total of 183 children with 366 kidney-ureter units (KUUs) underwent VUS and VCUG in the same session with the same catheterization. VUS was performed after intravesical administration of 1 ml of a second-generation ultrasound contrast agent (UCA; SonoVue, Bracco, Italy). VUR was detected in 140 out of 366 cases (38%); in 89 (24.3%) by both methods, in 37 (10.1%) by VUS only, and in 14 (3.8%) by VCUG only. Although there was considerable agreement in the diagnosis of VUR by VUS and VCUG (κ=0.68, standard error [κ]=0.04), the difference in the detection rate of reflux between VUS and VCUG was significant ( p<0.00001). The grade of VUR detected with VUS showed moderate agreement with grading by VCUG. Our findings suggest that contrast-enhanced harmonic VUS using a second-generation contrast agent is superior to VCUG in the detection and grading of VUR, and it should be the method of choice for this clinical indication. The beetle genus Agathidium is the largest insect group documented that principally feeds on slime moulds. Agathidium pulchellum, one of the rarest Agathidium species in Europe, is listed in the EU’s Habitats Directive. We studied the habitat associations of A. pulchellum in 44 sites located in old-growth and managed forests in eastern Finland. Agathidium pulchellum occurred exclusively on the slime-mould species Trichia decipiens. The host was associated with mid-decayed aspen, spruce and birch logs, and its incidence grew with both increasing log diameter and stand-level log density of spruce and aspen. We also observed that even if its host was present, the beetle was absent from sites with less than 80 aspen and spruce logs per hectare. All sites with A. pulchellum were natural forests of high conservation value. Our results show that it is possible to systematically survey the occurrence of A. pulchellum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The prevalence of adult-type hypolactasia varies ethnically and geographically among populations. A C/T–13910 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), upstream of the lactase gene, is known to be associated with lactase non-persistence. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of lactase-persistent and non-persistent genotypes in the Hungarian population, the age at onset and the applicability of the lactose H2 breath test in comparison with genetic screening. The prevalence of the C/C−13910 genotype among adults was 37%. Hypolactasia starts to appear at around 5 years of age. Over the age of 12 years, almost all of those with a C/C−13910 genotype have lactase non-persistence. The C/C−13910 genotype was closely associated with a positive lactose H2 breath test in symptomatic children, whereas the lactase-persistent genotypes correlated better with a negative H2 test in a control group. Abstract  Higher plant thylakoid membranes contain a protein kinase that phosphorylates certain threonine residues of light-harvesting complex II (LHCII), the main light-harvesting antenna complexes of photosystem II (PSII) and some other phosphoproteins (Allen, Biochim Biophys Acta 1098:275, 1992). While it has been established that phosphorylation induces a conformational change of LHCII and also brings about changes in the lateral organization of the thylakoid membrane, it is not clear how phosphorylation affects the dynamic architecture of the thylakoid membranes. In order to contribute to the elucidation of this complex question, we have investigated the effect of duroquinol-induced phosphorylation on the membrane ultrastructure and the thermal and light stability of the chiral macrodomains and of the trimeric organization of LHCII. As shown by small angle neutron scattering on thylakoid membranes, duroquinol treatment induced a moderate (~10%) increase in the repeat distance of stroma membranes, and phosphorylation caused an additional loss of the scattering intensity, which is probably associated with the partial unstacking of the granum membranes. Circular dichroism (CD) measurements also revealed only minor changes in the chiral macro-organization of the complexes and in the oligomerization state of LHCII. However, temperature dependences of characteristic CD bands showed that phosphorylation significantly decreased the thermal stability of the chiral macrodomains in phosphorylated compared to the non-phosphorylated samples (in leaves and isolated thylakoid membranes, from 48.3°C to 42.6°C and from 47.5°C to 44.3°C, respectively). As shown by non-denaturing PAGE of thylakoid membranes and CD spectroscopy on EDTA washed membranes, phosphorylation decreased by about 5°C, the trimer-to-monomer transition temperature of LHCII. It also enhanced the light-induced disassembly of the chiral macrodomains and the monomerization of the LHCII trimers at 25°C. These data strongly suggest that phosphorylation of the membranes considerably facilitates the heat- and light-inducible reorganizations in the thylakoid membranes and thus enhances the structural flexibility of the membrane architecture.
