Background Knowledge on the impact of the temporary kindergarten closure policy under COVID-19 in 2020 on childhood overweight and obesity is inadequate. We aimed to examine differences in rates of overweight and obesity from 2018 to 2021 among kindergarten children aged 3–7 years. Methods Overweight was defined as body mass index (BMI) > 1 standard deviation (SD) for age and sex, and obesity was defined as BMI > 2 SD for age and sex. Generalized linear mixed modeling was used for analysis. Results A total of 44,884 children and 71,216 growth data points from all 57 public kindergartens in Jiading District, Shanghai, China were analyzed. The rates of obesity from 2018 to 2021 were 6.9%, 6.6%, 9.5%, and 7.3% in boys and 2.8%, 2.8%, 4.5%, and 3.1% in girls, respectively. The rates of overweight from 2018 to 2021 were 14.3%, 14.3%, 18.2%, and 15.3% in boys and 10.6%, 10.9%, 13.9%, and 11.6% in girls. The rates of obesity and overweight among kindergarten children in 2020 were significantly higher than those in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Compared to 2020, the odds ratios of the obesity rate in 2018, 2019, and 2021 were 0.67 [95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.58–0.77, P P P = 0.001), respectively. The odds ratios of the overweight rate in 2018, 2019, and 2021 were 0.75 (95% CI = 0.69–0.82, P P P = 0.008), respectively, compared to 2020. Conclusions The rates of overweight and obesity significantly increased among kindergarten children in 2020 after the 5-month kindergarten closure. It was critical to provide guidance to caregivers on fostering a healthy lifestyle for children at home under public health emergencies.

The liver lipid metabolism of older individuals canbecome impaired and the circadian rhythm of genes involved in lipid metabolism is also disturbed. Although the link between metabolism and circadian rhythms is already recognized, how these processes are decoupled in liver during aging is still largely unknown. Here, we show that the circadian rhythm for the transcription factor Egr-1 expression is shifted forward with age in male mice. Egr-1 deletion accelerates liver age-related metabolic dysfunction, which associates with increased triglyceride accumulation, disruption of the opposite rhythmic coupling of Egr-1 and Cidea (Cell Death Inducing DFFA Like Effector A) at the transcriptional level and large lipid droplet formation. Importantly, adjustment of the central clock with light via a 4-hour forward shift in 6-month-old mice, leads to recovery the rhythm shift of Egr-1 during aging and largely ameliorated liver metabolic dysfunction. All our collected data suggest that liver Egr-1 might integrate the central and peripheral rhythms and regulate metabolic homeostasis in the liver.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Its invasiveness and ability to metastasize contributes to an extremely high patient mortality. However, the molecular mechanisms that underlie the characteristics of HCC progression are not well understood. BRF2 has been shown to be an oncogene in a number of tumors; however, its role in HCC has not yet been thoroughly examined. In this study, we identified and validated BRF2 as an oncogene in HCC, providing a new insight into HCC pathogenesis and therapeutic possibilities. We showed that BRF2 expression was significantly upregulated in HCC cell lines and tissues, while BRF2 depletion suppressed HCC metastasis and invasion. We then examined the upstream regulation of BRF2 and identified miR-409-3p as being predicted to bind to the 3′ UTR of BRF2. We used a luciferase activity assay and functional verification to show that BRF2 is downregulated by miR-409-3p. Finally, we used bioinformatic analysis to show that BRF2 may be related to early HCC development through the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Background Atherosclerosis (AS) is the leading underlying cause of the majority of clinical cardiovascular events. Retention of foamy macrophages in plaques is the main factor initiating and promoting the atherosclerotic process. Our previous work showed that ox-LDL induced macrophage retention in plaques and that the guidance receptor Uncoordinated-5 homolog B (Unc5b) was involved in this process. However, little is known about the role of Unc5b in regulating macrophage accumulation within plaques. Results In the present study, we found that Unc5b controls macrophage migration and thus promotes plaque progression in ApoE−/− mice. The immunofluorescence colocalization assay results first suggested that fucosyltransferase 8 (Fut8) might participate in the exacerbation of atherosclerosis. Animals with Unc5b overexpression showed elevated levels of Fut8 and numbers of macrophages and an increased lesion size and intimal thickness. However, these effects were reversed in ApoE−/− mice with Unc5b knockdown. Furthermore, Raw264.7 macrophages with siRNA-mediated silencing of Unc5b or overexpression of Unc5b were used to confirm the regulatory mechanisms of Unc5b and Fut8 in vitro. In response to ox-LDL exposure, Unc5b and Fut8 were both upregulated, and macrophages showed reduced pseudopod formation and migratory capacities. However, these capacities were restored by blocking Unc5b or Fut8. Furthermore, the IP assay indicated that Fut8 regulated the level of α-1,6 fucosylation of Unc5b, which mainly occurs in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), and genetic deletion of the main fucosylation sites or Fut8 resulted in hypofucosylation of Unc5b. Moreover, the macrophage migration mediated by Unc5b depended on inactivation of the p-CDC42/p-PAK pathway. Conversely, macrophages with Unc5b overexpression displayed activation of the p-CDC42/p-PAK pathway and decreased migration both in vivo and in vitro. Conclusion These results demonstrated that hypofucosylation of Unc5b regulated by Fut8 is positively associated with the delay of the atherosclerotic process by promoting the migration of foamy macrophages. These findings identify a promising therapeutic target for atherosclerosis.

Phenol is the toxicant present in cigarette smoke that causes pulmonary diseases, eyes infection, and even various kinds of cancer. So, in this research, an attempt was done to prepare a suitable absorbent to remove phenol from cigarette smoke. A novel bio-based adsorbent succinylated carboxymethyl starch (S-CMS) was prepared by reacting carboxymethyl starch (CMS) with succinic anhydride (SA) in the presenting of N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent and pyridine. The structure of the S-CMS was confirmed by spectroscopic techniques including proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared. The S-CMS crystallinity and thermal properties were checked by x-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed a decrease in thermal properties and crystallinity for S-CMS. The S-CMS were tested as adsorbents for the removal of phenol. The adsorption efficiencies of CMS, S-CMS1, S-CMS2, and S-CMS3 towards phenol were shown to be 0.297 g/g, 0.321 g/g, 0.322 g/g, and 0.324 g/g, respectively.

Aberrant topological organization of whole-brain networks has been inconsistently reported in studies of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), reflecting limited sample sizes. To address this issue, we utilized a big data sample of MDD patients from the REST-meta-MDD Project, including 821 MDD patients and 765 normal controls (NCs) from 16 sites. Using the Dosenbach 160 node atlas, we examined whole-brain functional networks and extracted topological features (e.g., global and local efficiency, nodal efficiency, and degree) using graph theory-based methods. Linear mixed-effect models were used for group comparisons to control for site variability; robustness of results was confirmed (e.g., multiple topological parameters, different node definitions, and several head motion control strategies were applied). We found decreased global and local efficiency in patients with MDD compared to NCs. At the nodal level, patients with MDD were characterized by decreased nodal degrees in the somatomotor network (SMN), dorsal attention network (DAN) and visual network (VN) and decreased nodal efficiency in the default mode network (DMN), SMN, DAN, and VN. These topological differences were mostly driven by recurrent MDD patients, rather than first-episode drug naive (FEDN) patients with MDD. In this highly powered multisite study, we observed disrupted topological architecture of functional brain networks in MDD, suggesting both locally and globally decreased efficiency in brain networks.

The nucleus accumbens (NAc) is considered a hub of reward processing and a growing body of evidence has suggested its crucial role in the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, inconsistent results have been reported by studies on reward network-focused resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). In this study, we examined functional alterations of the NAc-based reward circuits in patients with MDD via meta- and mega-analysis. First, we performed a coordinated-based meta-analysis with a new SDM-PSI method for all up-to-date rs-fMRI studies that focused on the reward circuits of patients with MDD. Then, we tested the meta-analysis results in the REST-meta-MDD database which provided anonymous rs-fMRI data from 186 recurrent MDDs and 465 healthy controls. Decreased functional connectivity (FC) within the reward system in patients with recurrent MDD was the most robust finding in this study. We also found disrupted NAc FCs in the DMN in patients with recurrent MDD compared with healthy controls. Specifically, the combination of disrupted NAc FCs within the reward network could discriminate patients with recurrent MDD from healthy controls with an optimal accuracy of 74.7%. This study confirmed the critical role of decreased FC in the reward network in the neuropathology of MDD. Disrupted inter-network connectivity between the reward network and DMN may also have contributed to the neural mechanisms of MDD. These abnormalities have potential to serve as brain-based biomarkers for individual diagnosis to differentiate patients with recurrent MDD from healthy controls.

Succinylated starches (SS) were prepared by the reaction of normal starch (NS) and porous starch (PS) with succinic anhydride (SA) in the presence of DMF solvent and base pyridine, respectively. The proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared were used to confirm the successful synthesis of the SS (SS1, SS2, SS3 and SS4, respectively). The X-ray diffractometer XPert PRO (Cu Kα, λ = 1.54 A) was used to study the crystallinity of NS, PS and SS. The XRD analysis showed that the SS exhibited amorphous nature after succinylation. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis of NS, PS and SS showed that succinylation decreased the thermal stability. The morphology of the NS, PS and SS was studied by SEM. These SS were used as adsorbents for phenol removal. The adsorption efficiencies for phenol by NS, SS1, SS2, SS3 and SS4 were found to be 0.084 g/g, 0.165 g/g, 0.173 g/g, 0.183 g/g and 0.189 g/g, respectively.

As Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure has rapidly become commonplace in most countries worldwide, the development of ICT-related competence is now considered to be a key goal in Taiwan’s curriculum. Nowadays, society expects undergraduates to develop essential computer abilities before entering the workplace. In addition to possessing computing skills, students are also required to have problem-solving ability and teamwork competency. To equip students to meet these expectations, the researchers integrated two teaching approaches, using content-based knowledge awareness (CoKA) and team learning (TL) to enhance students’ programming skills in an online computing course, and to reduce students’ anxiety and regulate cognitive load in the cloud classroom involved in this study. In this research, the authors conducted a quasi-experiment to examine the influences of CoKA and TL. Therefore, the design for the experiment was a 2 (CoKA vs. non-CoKA) × 2 (TL vs. non-TL) factorial pretest/posttest design. There were 184 participants, who were neither information nor computer majors, from four classes, enrolled in a required course titled ‘Programming Design’. The first class (G1) simultaneously received the online CoKA and TL intervention, the second class (G2) received only the online CoKA intervention, and the third class (G3) received only the online TL intervention; these served as the experimental groups, while the last class (G4), which received a traditional teaching approach, served as the control group. According to the results, students who received online TL had significant increase in their computing skills, and significant decrease in their level of anxiety and cognitive load. However, the expected effects of CoKA on developing students’ skills in designing mobile applications, reducing anxiety level and regulating cognitive load were not found. The design of integrating CoKA and TL in an online course could be a reference for educators when conducting online, flipped, or blended courses, particularly for those focusing on developing skills in computer programming.

To overcome the migration problems of burning rate catalysts (BRCs), ferrocene-based amide compounds (AM-Fcs) were synthesized. The successful synthesis of AM-Fcs were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The electrochemistry behaviors of AM-Fcs were examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV). The CV experimental results indicated that these AM-Fcs showed good electrochemical performances, which were contributable to their burning rate (BR) catalytic activity in composite solid propellants. The anti-migration test of AM-Fcs verified significantly slower migration than ferrocene and the most commonly used BRCs catocene. Thermal stability and BR catalytic impact of AM-Fcs on the thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) were studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermogravimetry. These AM-Fcs revealed good catalytic behaviors on the thermal degradation of AP.

Ethylene response factors (ERFs) widely exist in plants and have been reported to be an important regulator of plant abiotic stress. Celery, a common economic vegetable of Apiaceae, contains lots of ERF transcription factors (TFs) with various functions. AP2/ERF TFs play positive or negative roles in plant growth and stress response. Here, AgERF8, a gene encoding EAR-type AP2/ERF TF, was identified. The AgERF8 mRNA accumulated in response to both abscisic acid (ABA) signaling and salt treatment. AgERF8 was proving to be a nucleus-located protein and could bind to GCC-box. The overexpression of AgERF8 in Arabidopsis repressed the transcription of downstream genes, AtBGL and AtBCH. Arabidopsis overexpressing AgERF8 gene showed inhibited root growth under ABA and NaCl treatments. AgERF8 transgenic lines showed low tolerance to ABA and salt stress than wild-type plants. Low increment in SOD and POD activities, increased accumulation of MDA, and significantly decreased plant fresh weights and chlorophyll levels were detected in AgERF8 hosting lines after treated with ABA and NaCl. Furthermore, the overexpression of AgERF8 also inhibited the levels of ascorbic acid and antioxidant-related genes (AtCAT1, AtSOD1, AtPOD, AtSOS1, AtAPX1, and AtP5CS1) expression in transgenic Arabidopsis. This finding indicated that AgERF8 negatively affected the resistance of transgenic Arabidopsis to ABA and salt stress through regulating downstream genes expression and relevant physiological changes. It will provide a potential sight to further understand the functions of ERF TFs in celery.

Ascorbate is an antioxidant in plants. Its content is an important index to evaluate the nutritional quality of celery. In higher plant, ascorbate accumulation is effected by CO2 concentration. To study the effects of elevated CO2 (1000 µmol mol−1) on ascorbate accumulation in celery, ascorbate contents and the transcript levels of genes related to ascorbate metabolism in the leaves (leaf blade and petiole) were detected. The results of current study showed that the ascorbate and total ascorbate levels increased during all the treated stages in celery petioles, and they were 1.09–3.91 fold of the control. In leaf blades, the ascorbate contents exhibited a lower level (96.12% and 90.46% of the control) in treatments at 2 and 4 days, and then increased to 1.04 and 1.27 fold of the control in treatments at 6 and 8 days, respectively. Elevated CO2 altered the expression profiles of ascorbate-related genes and the activities of corresponding enzymes. Expression levels of the genes, AgPGI2, AgGMP, AgPMI, AgGalDH, AgGalLDH, GalUR, AgDHAR1, AgAPX1, and AgAO, in the leaf blades corresponded well to the change in ascorbate contents. At 6 days of treatment, the relative expression levels of AgPGI2, AgPMI, AgGGP1, AgGGP2, AgGalUR, AgMDHAR, AgDHAR1, and AgAPX1 in leaf blades increased, and were 4.41, 2.39, 4.65, 3.64, 3.11, 4.53, 4.59, and 3.86 times higher than that of the control. Increased ascorbate accumulation in celery leaves under elevated CO2 treatments might be also related to the change in SOD, POD, and CAT activities, as well as GSH content. These results will enhance our understanding on the effects of elevated CO2 on ascorbate accumulation and potential molecular mechanism regulating ascorbate metabolism in celery.

The application and development of educational technologies has influenced current education practices. However, there are few studies discussing how to apply these technologies and devices with appropriate teaching methods to help students achieve satisfactory learning goals, especially for computing classes. Thus, the researchers reconsidered the course design of a computing course with practical teaching methods, activity-based learning (ABL) and meaningful learning (ML), in an online learning environment. The researchers investigated, via quasi-experiments, the effects of web-mediated ABL and ML on developing students’ learning effects, learning engagement, and academic motivation in this online computing course. A 2 (ABL vs. non-ABL) × 2 (ML vs. non-ML) design, as well as factorial pretest/posttest design, was employed in this experimental research. The selected course for experiment was titled “Applied Information Technology: Office Software,” one semester in length and a required course for the four involved classes of students at a comprehensive university. All students in this study came from non-computer departments. According to the results of this study, students who received web-mediated ML had a significant increase in their learning engagement. However, the expected effects of ABL on developing students’ skills in using PowerPoint and Word, learning engagement, and academic motivation were not found in this study. Possible explanations for this nonsignificant outcome are included in the paper. The researchers’ design of an online course integrating ABL and ML may be used by teachers and schools when conducting online, flipped, or blended courses for their students, particularly for those courses focused on developing students’ skills in using PowerPoint and Word.

Ferrocene-based polypyrrole (PPyFc) composites containing multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), reduced graphene oxide (RGO) and carbon black (CB) have been prepared by chemical oxidative polymerization. The prepared PPyFc/MWCNT, PPyFc/RGO and PPyFc/CB composites have been characterized by SEM, TEM, FTIR, XRD, XPS and TGA. Electrical conductivity of the PPyFc/MWCNT, PPyFc/RGO and PPyFc/CB composites has been tested by a typical four-probe method. Furthermore, the electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the PPyFc/CB, PPyFc/RGO and PPyFc/MWCNT composites has been measured through a coaxial method in the S-band frequency range. The EMI SE achieved for PPyFc/CB, PPyFc/RGO and PPyFc/MWCNT composites was − 11.08 dB, − 11.44 dB and − 23.74 dB, respectively.

In the past decade, the developments of the Internet and educational technologies have facilitated innovative approaches to modern education. In addition, computers and related software are used in all professional fields of the workplace; therefore, students should acquire related essential abilities before they enter the workforce. Teachers should devote attention to designing and implementing appropriate online teaching methods and guiding their students to adopt suitable learning strategies to develop related abilities and improve their learning effectiveness. Thus, in this study, two innovative teaching methods, namely self-organized learning (SOL) and learners-as-designers (LaD), were integrated with educational technology and ubiquitous learning (u-learning) to develop students’ computing skills, academic motivation, and engagement in a blended course. A quasi-experiment was conducted to examine the effects of ubiquitous SOL and LaD. The experiment used a 2 (SOL vs. non-SOL) × 2 (LaD vs. non-LaD) factorial pretest–posttest design. First-year students from four classes who were taking a one-semester university course titled “Applied Information Technology: Data Processing” were the participants in the empirical study. The results revealed that students who received the ubiquitous LaD intervention exhibited significantly improved computing skills compared with those of students who did not receive the intervention. However, the ubiquitous SOL intervention did not enhance students’ computing skills, academic motivation, or engagement. The study results may be used as references for online educators when designing an online, cloud, or ubiquitous course for their students.

Herein, a facile strategy for the synthesis of sandwich pyrolyzed bacterial cellulose (PBC)/graphene oxide (GO) composite was reported simply by utilizing the large-scale regenerated biomass bacterial cellulose as precursor. The unique and delicate structure where three-dimensional interconnected bacterial cellulose (BC) network embedded in two-dimensional GO skeleton could not only work as an effective barrier to retard polysulfide diffusion during the charge/discharge process to enhance the cyclic stability of the Li–S battery, but also offer a continuous electron transport pathway for the improved rate capability. As a result, by utilizing pure sulfur as cathodes, the Li–S batteries assembled with PBC/GO interlayer can still exhibit a capacity of nearly 600 mAh·g−1 at 3C and only 0.055% capacity decay per cycle can be observed over 200 cycles. Additionally, the cost-efficient and environment-friendly raw materials may enable the PBC/GO sandwich interlayer to be an advanced configuration for Li–S batteries.

Frequent occurrence of various events has a tremendous impact on daily social life; and how to accurately evaluate the generated energy by an event is the spot in the event study. With the rapid development of the internet technology, the internet web has become a good platform for evaluating event's energy. Based on the physical shock wave model was firstly introduced to evaluate the generated energy by an event in this paper, this paper proposed a new method that the shock wave model was used to cluster classify with track sequential information under an action of an event. The experimental results show that it has a good consistency between the generated energy by an event under the shock wave model and people's behavior affected by an event, and the proposed energy evaluation method is correct and practical.

With the adoption of online learning and the development of educational technologies, many universities and teachers are attempting to provide qualified teaching for their students. In order to improve students' learning, the authors designed and provided flipped learning (FL) and treatment of online academic help-seeking (OAHS) in a computing course to help students develop computing skills for using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. The participants in this study were 126 undergraduates from three classes taking a compulsory course titled "Applied Information Technology: Office Software." According to the analysis, students who received the treatment of OAHS had significantly better computing skills for using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint than those without. However, the treatment of FL did not result in better development of students' computing skills. Based on the results obtained, the authors present possible implications for online teachers, educators, and schools, particularly to assist those students who may feel bashful and are not willing to ask questions or seek for help in traditional classrooms. This study designs and provides reference for an integration of FL with OAHS to improve students' learning outcomes.

A PbS quantum dot optical fiber amplifier with enhanced processability and environmental stability is described. Modification of PbS quantum dots with multifunction copolymers was demonstrated via spectroscopy to aid dispersion of the quantum dots in a sol during the fabrication of a quantum dot optical fiber amplifier without degradation or modification of optical properties. The influence of multifunction copolymers and oleylamine-coated PbS quantum dots on the structure was studied via scanning electron microscopy. The nanoparticle shape of oleylamine-coated PbS quantum dots after polymer modification remained unchanged compared to those previously reported. With the addition of a fluorine-containing component, a PbS quantum dot optical fiber amplifier retained 96% of its initial gain after 100 days, as compared with 16% for quantum dots modified with a non-fluorine-containing polymer, it was certain that fluorine bond of multifunction copolymers had a good improvement in durability of PbS quantum dot. Simultaneously, PbS quantum dot optical amplifier gain as high as 17 dB was achieved at 1550 nm.

Hybrid power sources have attracted much attention in the electric vehicle area. Particularly, electric-electric hybrid powertrain system consisting of supercapacitor modules and lithium-ion batteries has been widely applied because of the high power density of supercapacitors. In this study, we design a hybrid powertrain system containing two porous carbon electrode-based supercapacitor modules in parallel and one lithium ion battery pack. With the construction of the testing station, the performance and stability of the used supercapacitor modules are investigated in correlation with the structure of the supercapacitor and the nature of the electrode materials applied. It has been shown that the responding time for voltage vibration from 20 V to 48.5 V during charging or discharging process decreases from about 490 s to 94 s with the increase in applied current from 20 A to 100 A. The capacitance of the capacitor modules is nearly independent on the applied current. With the designed setup, the energy efficiency can reach as high as 0.99. The results described here provide a guidance for material selection of supercapacitors and optimized controlling strategy for hybrid power system applied in electric vehicles.

Sacral plexus avulsions lead to severe disability in patients and remain a thorny clinical problem due to the lack of anatomical, experimental and clinical studies. Attempts have been made to treat lumbosacral plexus injuries with such operations as direct anastomosis of the ends of injured sacral plexuses, and certain therapeutic effects were achieved. To further explore the degeneration pattern of anterior cornual motoneurons and determine the best time for treatment, we carried out this study. We randomly assigned 60 SD rats into six groups (group A-F), with ten rats per group. The A, B, C, D, E, F groups included animals that received operation for L4-L6 nerve root avulsion at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks respectively. We measured the apoptosis of motor neurons in the anterior corn through hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) staining, and found that after sacral plexus avulsions, motor neurons in the anterior horn of the spinal cord gradually reduced and the apoptosis index gradually increased as the time went by. Survival rates of motoneurons at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks after avulsion were (92.1 ± 4.7)%, (83.6 ± 3.7)%, (43.6 ± 4.2)%, (32.1 ± 3.5)%, (18.4 ± 3.7)% and (12.1 ± 3.3)%, respectively. The difference was most significant at week 6. Week 6 after injury is probably the deadline for surgical repair of sacral plexus avulsions.

China has a long history in garlic cultivation and is the biggest country of garlic production in the world. 375 accessions of garlic from 23 provinces and areas in China has been collected and preserved in national germplasm repository for vegetatively propagated vegetables in Beijing since 2002. However, the genetic background and diversity of garlic from China has not been well characterized. In this study, 212 of 375 accessions of garlic were evaluated based on 29 morphological traits and allicin content. Cluster, principal compound, principal ordinates, Shannon diversity index and Pearson correlation analysis were used. The results showed that the garlic clones from China had a widely diversity among all traits. Principal component analysis showed the cumulative proportion of the first eight components explained 71.35 % of total morphological variation in all accessions. Germplasm cluster analysis whether based on 29 morphological traits or bulb yield-related traits could distinguish all germplasm. All accessions were divided into two groups with bolting and non-bolting respectively, or into five subgroups with different traits based on 29 morphological traits. Principal coordinate analysis based on eight bulb related traits divided all accessions into 6 groups. Yield among the accessions ranged from 1.60 to 16.78 t/ha, and three accessions yielded above 15 t/ha. Pearson analysis suggested bulb yield was significantly positively correlated with bulb weight (r = 0.99), bulb diameter (r = 0.73), bulb height (r = 0.53), clove number (r = 0.52), leaf width (r = 0.52). Allicin content ranged from 0.81 to 3.01 %. Pseudostem diameter was found to be significantly positively correlated with allicin content but with the low correlation coefficient (r = 0.23). The result will obviously be helpful for breeder and researchers to comprehensively understand the genetic background of the collection and more easily select the target accessions, especially those with high yield and allicin content.

A dynamic marine propeller simulation system was developed, which is utilized for meeting the experimental requirement of theory research and engineering design of marine electric propulsion system. By applying an actual ship parameter and its accurate propeller J′ ∼ KT′ and J′ ∼ KP′ curve data, functional experiments based on the simulation system were carried out. The experiment results showed that the system can correctly emulate the propeller characteristics, produce the dynamic and steady performances of the propeller under different navigation modes, and present actual load torque for electric propulsion motor.

The association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the CYP1B1 gene and lung cancer risk is still ambiguous. In this meta analysis, we assessed 10 case-control studies included 7,067 cases and 9,374 controls of the association between CYP1B1 SNPs of Leu432Val (rs1056836, 432C>G), Asn453Ser (rs1800440, 453A>G), Ala119Ser (rs1056827, 119G>T), Arg48Gly (rs10012, 48C>G) and the risk of lung cancer. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the strength of association between the polymorphism and lung cancer risk under codominant model, dominant model and additive model respectively. Although there were limitations, this meta analysis indicated that individuals with 432GG genotype had a 39.7% higher risk of having lung cancer than those with the 432CC genotype, and individuals with the 432G allele had a 26.3% increased risk as well. An increased risk of lung cancer of 2.13 fold was observed in individuals with 119TT genotype. For Arg48Gly, individuals with 48GG genotype had a significantly increased risk of lung cancer compared with individuals with 48CC (OR 3.859; 95% CI 2.536-5.87). Elevated risk of lung cancer were observed in dominant model (OR 2.115; 95% CI 1.653-2.705) as well. The risk of lung cancer was elevated as the frequency of G allele increased in additive model (P = 0.000). For individuals with the polymorphism at codon 453, no evidence of such association was observed. Furthermore, a possible association between the CYP1B1 polymorphism at codon 432 and the lung cancer could be detected in individuals of Caucasian origin, while a negative association was suggested in Asians and African-Americans. An increased lung cancer risk was also found in women with polymorphism at codon 453. These results are supportive for the hypothesis that the CYP1B1 432GG, 119TT and 48GG genotypes are low-penetrance risk factors for developing lung cancer, and further studies are needed to validate these associations.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is reported to have evolved at a higher evolutionary rate than other RNA viruses. However, whether this virus is capable of evolutionary acceleration during outbreaks remains unknown. In this study, we analyze the data based on ORFs of eight newly obtained epidemic PRRSVs from Hebei province with other viral genomes from GenBank. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that all isolates during recent outbreaks (2006-2008) are grouped together. We also find that ORF5 genes of this viral group are positively selected, suggesting their higher evolutionary rates and coinciding with that period of large-scale outbreaks in China. The evolutionary rate of 3.29 x 10(-3) substitutions per nucleotide site per year also suggests the higher evolutionary rate of these viruses. We concluded that PRRSVs isolated during 2006-2008 in China underwent accelerated evolution, and predicted that this accelerated evolution equip these viruses more adapted to their primary hosts.

Background Barbarea vulgaris contains two genotypes: the glabrous type (G-type), which confers resistance to the diamondback moth (DBM) and other insect pests, and the pubescent type (P-type), which is susceptible to the DBM. Herein, the transcriptomes of P-type B. vulgaris before and after DBM infestation were subjected to Illumina (Solexa) pyrosequencing and comparative analysis. Results 5.0 gigabase pairs of clean nucleotides were generated. Non-redundant unigenes (33,721) were assembled and 94.1 % of them were annotated. Compared with our previous G-type transcriptome, the expression patterns of many insect responsive genes, including those related to secondary metabolism, phytohormones and transcription factors, which were significantly induced by DBM in G-type plants, were less sensitive to DBM infestation in P-type plants. The genes of the triterpenoid saponin pathway were identified in both G- and P-type plants. The upstream genes of the pathway showed similar expression patterns between the two genotypes. However, gene expression for two downstream enzymes, the glucosyl transferase (UGT73C11) and an oxidosqualene cyclase (OSC), were significantly upregulated in the P-type compared with the G-type plant. A novel kind of multi-quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) is presented. In the new structure device, a p-type contact layer has been grown on the top of the conventional structure of QWIP, then a small tunneling current is instead of the large compensatory current, which made the device low dark current and low noise characteristics. The measured result of dark current is consistent with the calculated result, and the noise of the new structure QWIP is decreased to one third of the conventional QWIP.

Germplasm enhancement and breeding is difficult for garlic (Allium sativum L.) as it can only be vegetatively propagated. Hence, mutation induction is still the most effective way to create new varieties. Calli from two Chinese commercial garlic varieties, Zhoumou (ZM) and Yongnian (YN), were treated with different dosages (1, 3, 5 and 7 Gy) of gamma (γ) radiation. The results showed that the two genotypes differed in their sensitivity to γ-radiation. YN was sensitive to high dosage, while ZM showed better growth at higher dosage. More specifically, the average number of calli producing sprouts, sprout number per callus, total sprouts number, the number of sprouts forming plantlets and plantlet lengths were higher when calli of variety YN were treated with 1 Gy. However, the corresponding parameters in ZM were higher for 7 Gy. Simple sequence repeat analysis with two of 16 novel primers showed genetic variation among the plantlets following γ-radiation treatments of 5 Gy for variety YN and 7 Gy for variety ZM. The methods and mutant materials in this study could be used in future garlic breeding programs.

Electroluminescence (EL) of Si bulk materials has been studied using lowly doped substrate with two Al-Si Schottky contacts. By applying a forward bias on the structure, the intense light emissions at 1.094 eV due to the TO-phonon assisted recombination was obtained at 40 K while other TA- and 2TO-associated transitions were also observed. The Si-TO EL peak persists up to RT with a radiative decay of ∼ 5 μs. EL emission mechanisms of these Si Schottky diodes are discussed based on temperature dependent- and injection current-dependent EL measurements.

This paper presented the effect of tetramethylpyrazine(TMP)on platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphos- phate(ADP)and platelet activating factor(PAF)in experimental rabbits with hyperlipoidemia and in the control group, in vitro.The results indicated that TMP in different concentrations had inhibiting effect on platelet aggregation in the two groups(P0.001).Although the maximum inhibiting rate in model group was less than that in the control one,it can be consider that TMP may effectively inhibit platelet aggregation and prevent thrombosis occurring in hyperlipoidemia.
