Abstract

Mice from the Orkney archipelago exhibit an important diversity regarding molar shape. While on some islands mice display a usual dental pattern, teeth from other islands display additional cusplets and unusual phenotypes that may constitute case studies for evaluating the potential functional relevance of dental changes. We developed a multifaceted approach combining 2D and 3D geometric morphometrics, dental topography, dental wear, biomechanics, estimations of masticatory muscles force, and in vivo bite force on wild-derived lab descendants exemplifying the two extreme dental morphologies. The two strains differed in the geometry of the upper and lower tooth rows, and in the topography of the upper row only. Surprisingly, the most unusual tooth morphology appeared as the least complex because tooth simplification overwhelmed the signal provided by the occurrence of additional cusplets. No difference in bite force nor muscle force was evidenced, showing that the important change in dental morphology was accommodated without major changes in the rest of the masticatory apparatus. The evolution of unusual dental phenotypes was possibly fueled by drift and inbreeding in small and isolated populations on remote islands of the archipelago. No functional counter-selection impeded this diversification, since the unusual dental phenotypes did not disrupt occlusion and mastication.

Abstract

International audience; A detailed facies analysis and interpretation of the evolution of depositional environments along a north–south transect of the Late Oxfordian—Early Kimmeridgian French Jura carbonate platform highlights hierarchically stacked depositional sequences. The identified small- and medium-scale depositional sequences are matched with the precise cyclostratigraphic framework initially established for the Swiss Jura platform. The superimposition of a long-term (2nd order) sea-level rise with long (400 kyr) eccentricity cycles explains most of the French Jura platform architecture. During the Bimammatum and Planula zones, the climate became progressively warmer and more arid, allowing enhanced carbonate production. This resulted in a strong progradation of the French Jura platform that progressively evolved from a ramp to an oolitic rimmed shelf. A brief interval characterized by a more humid climate during the upper Bimammatum Zone caused an increase in siliciclastic and nutrient input, leading to a reduction in carbonate production and strong retrogradation of the platform. During the Platynota and lower Hypselocyclum zones, the shallow inner shelf carbonate production once more exceeded the accommodation, leading to a general aggradation of the platform. From the upper Hypselocyclum Zone, with a more humid climate, the carbonate production did not outweigh the accommodation creation and the platform evolved to a flat-topped shelf. Thus, sea-level changes and climatic conditions (temperature and humidity) are the key factors controlling the nature of the sedimentation and the depositional profile of the French Jura platform during the Late Oxfordian—Early Kimmeridgian.

Abstract

International audience; The cellular prion protein PrP(C)/CD230 is a GPI-anchor protein highly expressed in cells from the nervous and immune systems and well conserved among vertebrates. In the last decade, several studies suggested that PrP(C) displays antiviral properties by restricting the replication of different viruses, and in particular retroviruses such as murine leukemia virus (MuLV) and the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). In this context, we previously showed that PrP(C) displays important similarities with the HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein and found that PrP(C) expression in a human cell line strongly reduced HIV-1 expression and virus production. Using different PrP(C) mutants, we report here that the anti-HIV-1 properties are mostly associated with the amino-terminal 24-KRPKP-28 basic domain. In agreement with its reported RNA chaperone activity, we found that PrP(C) binds to the viral genomic RNA of HIV-1 and negatively affects its translation. Using a combination of biochemical and cell imaging strategies, we found that PrP(C) colocalizes with the virus assembly machinery at the plasma membrane and at the virological synapse in infected T cells. Depletion of PrP(C) in infected T cells and microglial cells favors HIV-1 replication, confirming its negative impact on the HIV-1 life cycle.

Abstract

International audience; The exceptional record of well-preserved wood remains from the Middle Jurassic of Svalbard is studied from the taphonomic point of view. These remains were recovered from the Brentskardhaugen Bed, a conglomerate with phosphatic nodules, which constitutes the record of the eroded deposits corresponding to the Toarcian-Early Bathonian gap. The wood remains occur in the cores of these nodules. These wood fragments are preserved as phosphate (francolite) and as charcoals. The well preservation allows us to identify xenoxyloid cross-field pits and xenoxylean pitting on the radial wall of tracheid, characterizing the species Xenoxylon phyllocladoides. Phosphatic nodules originated as the result of early phosphate precipitation filling the inter-particle pore space of the sandy quartz sediment around the wood fragments (and other organic-rich nucleation centers) below the sediment-water interface. This phosphatization involved a sudden burial of the wood remains in the sea-bottom, the subsequent decay of the lignin, and a fast growth of carbonate fluorapatite forming phosphatic inner moulds. Fossil microbial biofilms induced the phosphatization. The dissolution/decay of the lignin is not possible in charcoal, and phosphatic casts did not develop in charcoalified parts. Some remains were not totally charred, with the lignin preserved only in reduced relicts that were later replaced by phosphate. The phosphate precipitation occurred in recurrent episodes during the Toarcian-Callovian as a result of distinct sea-level rises and the associated nutrification of the shelf. The phosphatic nodules were developed and reworked during the transgressive-regressive cycle of the Toarcian-Early Bathonian, as well as during the final transgression of the Late Bathonian-Earliest Callovian, which resulted in the Brentskardhaugen Bed

International audience; The objective of this study is to estimate changes in feeding preferences of the proboscidean species Gomphotherium subtapiroideum (Schlesinger 1917) by means of dental microwear analyses. The dietary changes are first evaluated through the ontogeny of this species, between juveniles and adults, and are then studied through geological time, from early Middle Miocene (MN5) to middle Late Miocene (MN8-9) localities of the German Molasse Basin. The microwear patterns of juvenile and adult individuals of G. subtapiroideum from Sandelzhausen (MN5) differ merely by the variable "length of scratches", emphasizing longer jaw movements during mastication in adults. The microwear signatures of G. subtapiroideum do not vary significantly between the two geological time periods studied, but reflect mixed feeding preferences in both cases. These results imply that, despite an important environmental change at that time (drying and opening), the ecology of G. subtapiroideum and, especially, its feeding habits were not affected. Its dental microwear pattern is then compared with those of other species of Proboscidea from the Middle-Late Miocene of Germany, namely Deinotherium giganteum and Gomphotherium steinheimense.

Abstract

Extant species of Muridae occupy a wide array of habitats and have diverse dietary habits. Consequently, their dental microwear patterns represent a potential clue to better understand the paleoecology of their extinct relatives, which are abundant in many Old World Neogene localities. In this study, dental microwear is investigated for specimens of 17 extant species of murine and deomyine rodents in order to test the reliability of this method and infer dietary preferences on the fossil species Saïdomys afarensis. This extinct form comes from a mid-Pliocene site (AL 327) located at the Hadar Formation (Ethiopia) known to have delivered many hominid specimens of Australopithecus afarensis. A significant correlation between microwear patterns and diet is detected. Thus, grass, fruit, and insect eaters display, respectively, high amounts of fine scratches, wide scratches, and large pits. Moreover, some aspects of the paleoecology of S. afarensis, including feeding habits, could be assessed in regard to its dental microwear pattern. Indeed, it probably had feeding habits similar to that of living grass eaters. These results concur with the presence of open to woodland areas covered by an herbaceous vegetal layer, including monocotyledons, in the vicinity of this mid-Pliocene locality.

International audience; In insects, biogenic amines have been shown to play an important role in olfactory plasticity. In a first attempt to decipher the underlying molecular mechanisms, we report the molecular cloning and precise expression pattern of a newly identified octopamine/tyramine-receptor-encoding gene in the antennae of the noctuid moth Mamestra brassicae (MbraOAR/TAR). A full-length cDNA has been obtained through homology cloning in combination with rapid amplification of cDNA ends/polymerase chain reaction; the deduced protein exhibits high identities with previously identified octopamine/tyramine receptors in other moths. In situ hybridization within the antennae has revealed that MbraOAR/TAR is expressed at the bases of both pheromone-sensitive and non-sensitive olfactory sensilla and in cells with a neurone-like shape. In accordance with previous physiological studies that have revealed a role of biogenic amines in the electrical activity of the receptor neurones, our results suggest that biogenic amines (either octopamine or tyramine) target olfactory receptor neurones to modulate olfactory coding as early as the antennal level.

Abstract

International audience; Since the 1970s, radiolarians have been used extensively to study and characterize basin successions from the peri-Mediterranean regions. However, no data was ever produced in Tunisia in spite of the occurrence of Jurassic siliceous series previously described by many authors. Our study presents the biostratigraphical results obtained on sections from the Jédidi Formation, which characterizes the basinal series of the Tunisian Trough. We provide new direct age determinations from the base, the middle part and the top of the formation, which ranges from the latest Bajocian–middle Bathonian to the Oxfordian (Tethyan biozones UAZ 5-6 to 8-9). The onset of these radiolarianbearing series of the Tunisian Trough, adjacent to partly coeval Ammonitico Rosso successions, is interpreted as resulting from regional palaeotopographical gradient and palaeoceanographical conditions. Inaccurately interpreted as “true” radiolarites, theses series are different from coeval radiolarites of the Maghrebian “Dorsale calcaire” and from more recent homologous deposits of the Flysch domain. They are instead correlative with series exposed in the Babors and the west-Numidian ranges of northern Algeria that belonged to the same Jurassic North African margin of western Tethys. During Alpine convergence s.l., this external domain was overthrust by nappe complexes of the Maghrebide inner zones and the Flysch domain units.

Abstract

Des plantes fossiles du Jurassique supérieur rapportées aux Gymnospermes s.l. provenant du massif Manamana, au sud-ouest de Madagascar, ont été étudiées. Elles sont attribuées aux Ptéridospermales et aux Coniférales. Une nouvelle espèce, Brachyphyllum madagascariense nov. sp. est décrite, avec l'aide des caractères épidermiques observés au microscope électronique à balayage (MEB). Il s'agit de la première description d'une telle paléoflore dans le Jurassique supérieur de Madagascar. Des comparaisons de composition systématique sont faites avec d'autres paléoflores de même âge du Gondwana.

Abstract

International audience; The characterization and distribution of the microfacies and the microfossil assemblages of a Middle Oxfordian section from Jura Mountains composed by thick oolitic–coral limestones is analyzed. Six microfacies types(mainly grainstones) are differentiated mainly composed by ooids, intraclasts and bioclasts. Foraminiferal assemblages are dominated by agglutinated forms. Benthic microbial communities and sessile foraminifera are the main components of the encrustations. The whole set of microfossil assemblages is typical of shallow subtidal environments rich in “algae” (Cayeuxia, “Solenopora”, Thaumatoporella, Bacinella, Girvanella and Terquemella) and foraminifera such as Nautiloculina oolithica, Redmondoides lugeoni, Ammobaculites coprolitiformis, Troglotella incrustans and Rectocyclammina. The increasing upward record of debris of algae and Nautiloculina, and the decrease of serpulids, bryozoans, nodosariids and ophthalmidiids indicate a shallowing- upward trend. The stratigraphic distribution of microfacies and microfossil assemblages lead to diVerentiate two main successive phases. The Wrst is a deeper subtidal environment in an open shelf, while the second is a shallow subtidal environment with evolution from winnowed to more restricted conditions. Microfabrics of radial to concentric ooids upwards in the section correspond to higher energy environments related to an oolitic shoal. This study shows how a very detailed analysis of microfacies, which integrates oolitic features, microfossil assemblages and microtaphonomy is potentially a useful tool for interpreting hydrodynamism and sequence evolution in marine carbonate shallow environments.

Abstract

International audience; Very large amount of microbialites, up to 70% of the reef volume takes part in the edification of Lower Bajocian coral reefs in the Chargey-lès-Port quarry (Haute- Saône, France). Such high amounts of microbialites were unknown within bioconstructions of Middle Jurassic age. Along the 16 m-thick section, seven successive biohermal or biostromal units developed on a shallow platform. Bioconstructions display a first coral growth phase with either constratal or superstratal growth fabrics. Coral fauna is relatively poorly diversified and is dominated by massive forms (Isastrea, Thamnasteria, and Periseris) or branched phaceloid (Cladophyllia) and ramose (Dendraraea) colonies. Corals can be heavily encrusted by microbialites of diverse forms and fabrics (leiolitic, thrombolitic, and stromatolitic). According to the coral growth fabrics, microbialite crusts developed on top of or at the underside of coral colonies, forming a coral-microbialite elementary unit. Microbialites show a multiphase development: (i) directly at the coral surface, a first and mmscale microbialite layer locally developed; (ii) a second, cm-scale microbialite layer (up to 8 cm thick) covered the entire coral reef framework and assumed the main build- ing role; and (iii) a third, mm- to cm-scale, laminated microbialite layer may also be observed onlapping previous reef structures, before having been progressively buried under sediments. Contemporaneously to the coral growth phase, the first microbialite layer developed on dead portions of coral colonies. The transition between coral growth and microbialite development (i.e., second layer of microbialites) is interpreted as a result of a coral reef crisis, probably reflecting more nutrient-rich conditions. The passage to a stromatolitic (third) layer suggests a control of the accumulation rate. Abstract

International audience; Based on a critical statistical reanalysis of biometrical raw data from calcaneal morphology recently published by Youlatos (2003), I infer that the most similar extant Cercopithecidae to Mesopithecus pentelicus from the Late Miocene of Pikermi, Greece are arboreal, suggesting that M. pentelicus is also best regarded as arboreal rather than semiterrestrial or terrestrial. I used 2 different approaches: 1. Fisher's overall and Holm's multiple-hypothesis tests and 2. bootstrapped cluster analysis of a Mahalanobis generalized distance matrix. From a strictly methodological point of view, the results emphasize a well-known but frequently ignored problem: biometrical descriptors are usually intercorrelated variables, a characteristic that can strongly bias the results of quantitative comparisons between individuals or species.

Abstract

Recently Angst et al. (2011) proposed a new mean bodymass estimate for the dodo (Raphus cucullatus), ofMauritius Island, 10.2 kg, which is at the lower end ofprevious estimated intervals such as Kitchener's (1993). Wequestion both their methods and results and propose arevised estimated interval.Angst et al. (2011) used the lengths of the hindlimb threelong bones and regression equations, based on a sample ofliving birds, between these lengths and body mass (Zefferet al. 2003). But contra Angst et al. (2011), tibiotarsus andtarsometatarsus lengths cannot be used to estimate bodymass. This is because different bird species of the sameweight can show considerable differences in the lengths ofthese two bones, hence in leg length, across families andorders, generally in adaptation to particular locomotoryhabits (terrestriality, running, perching, aeriality, swimming,wading …), mode of predation (e.g. ornithophagy) andothers, with particular causes in insular contexts (e.g.Campbell and Marcus 1992; Zeffer et al. 2003; Louchart2005 and references therein).
