Knowledge network is widely applied in fields, such as management science, library science, information science and pedagogy, to determine the cutting-edge and popular aspects in relevant fields. It can help us to solve many academic problems by the knowledge network method based on the literature. The knowledge network method has a special value to researchers. Based on the definition of the knowledge network and its basic concepts, this paper reflects the connotation of knowledge network from two aspects: the realisation process of knowledge network and the research status of knowledge network from the perspective of bibliometrics and analyses the methods of knowledge network from the theoretical basis of multidisciplinary level. The knowledge network model is constructed from time-dimension, network type and research field. This paper explores the concept of the Web portal in terms of services meant to aid the user not only to go through successfully but also locate and apply its content to scholarship and learning. It is noted that how a library makes portals available is as important to researchers as is access to the information gained from their use. Supporting services for portals that have been developed without a model are further discussed in this paper.

In the digital environment, the potent opportunities of partnerships both national and international place the great international research libraries within several overlapping communities. Like wise, the concept of national and international library collections demands to be re-examined at a time when the Internet is facilitating not only local access to global collections but its corollary, global access to local collections. This paper focuses on some international dimensions of digital access to library materials. The ethics of sharing and the setting of priorities for making unique local research collections available to worldwide audiences are further discussed in this paper.

The gathering, organization, and archiving of critical business intelligence is a complex task. Competitive Intelligence systems gather information for use in the decision making process. Knowledge Management Systems are used to organize this knowledge. Library Science provides structure for the storage of published documents, in both printed and electronic formats. This paper proposes that the common link among the three disciplines is Archive Theory, which is the process by which an archive of information is built. This process provides a framework for analysis of what documents or information to retain and what format to use when retaining them. This article discusses the topics of papers presented in the November 2003 issue of the "Journal of Library Administration." The first paper, by James Michalco, outlines the library community's understanding of user needs, how researchers' use of electronic information is evolving, and how libraries are responding to their changing roles. The second paper, by Lizabeth A. Wilson, explores how libraries are using what is known about user preferences and search behaviors to create access points. Meanwhile, Joseph J. Branin, defines knowledge management in his paper and provides some examples of how the Ohio State University Libraries has changed in response to the shift to knowledge management. The other remaining papers are likewise briefly described in this article. Together, the papers provide an overview of the thoughts of the nation's leading librarians and information service executives on improving access to information.

This paper examines the role of the selector as the author compares the traditional collection development criteria with the acquisition of aggregate packages of electronic resources that are part of today's collection development programs among libraries. The paper begins by discussing the relationship between portals and collection development, in particular, the work and skills of collection development librarians. The author points out that the subject expertise characteristic of selectors can play an important role as libraries seek to develop function portals, implement federated collections, manage the chaos of the Web, and meet the challenges of the knowledge management enterprise.

This paper focuses on the centrality of reference services to the practice of librarianship. It enumerates the limitations faced by Kenneth Dike Library (KDL) in its bid to deploy Information Communications Technology (ICT) to its reference services delivery system. Being a university library in a developing country, KDL has to cope with the problems confronting universities in Nigeria. The problems that plague the ivory towers and, consequently, the libraries that serve them, include lack of proper funding, infrastructural deficiencies, inability to retain information technology experts, and intra-local politics regarding the control of ICT facilities in the library. This paper compares two influential attempts at presenting a comprehensive framework of knowledge management. For each perspective the author examines theoretical foundations, highlights conceptual elements and themes, and discusses the role of information and information management. Ikujiro Nonaka and Hirotaka Takeuchi analyze the dynamics of knowledge creation, particularly the importance of tacit knowledge and its conversion into explicit knowledge. Thomas H. Davenport and Lawrence Prusak focus on the design of organizational processes that enable knowledge generation, codification, and transfer. The first section of this paper explores some general issues concerning the concept of the portal. The second section examines some current library approaches to portal construction, with some focus on architectural concerns. The third section returns to the broader view, considering briefly some aspects of the information environment in which libraries are working, and describing something about how the library manifests its services in a network space.

Digital age librarians have made a professional distinction between collection development and collection management and they now are moving one step further to knowledge management. This paper outlines the history of the said changes, defines knowledge management, and provides some examples of how the Ohio State University Libraries has changed in response to this shift. The author further points out the new functions of academic librarians as knowledge management developers, knowledge management integrators, knowledge management educators, and knowledge management researchers.

The African proverb “When an elder dies, a library burns down” clearly sums up the importance of traditional knowledge preservation and cultural continuity, which the study found to be a key need and concern amongst First Nations communities in Ontario, Canada. To follow-up on elders’ suggestions that libraries are potential custodians of traditional knowledge, this paper explores how traditional knowledge preservation intersects with Library and Information Science (LIS) practices of knowledge classification, organization, and dissemination and establishes the various challenges that this intersection poses to these LIS practices. The paper concludes that libraries and other information institutions need to re-examine and reconstruct themselves in ways that take into account non-western epistemologies and worldviews and develop much needed cultural competency in order to undertake traditional knowledge custodianship. Abstract: Aim of the study: The aim of the study is to explore the views of information professionals for knowledge management (KM) in the libraries/information institutions of Bangladesh. Research questions: This paper seeks to address the following research questions: How the information professionals of Bangladesh perceive the views of KM? What are likely to be the skills required by the information professionals of Bangladesh for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh? and what are likely to be the critical success factors for encouraging KM in the information institutions of Bangladesh? Method: The methodology includes a quantitative approach. The study has been conducted through a survey using a pre-structured questionnaire. A short and structured questionnaire was sent to 50 information professionals who had been working in different libraries in Bangladesh through email and/or by postal mail. The respondents were selected from six divisions of Bangladesh (25 respondents from Dhaka division, 5 each in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet divisions). Out of the 50 individuals sent the survey we received 30 responses, for a response rate 60%. Findings: The results of the study show that that 93.24% of the respondents first read about KM in the literature, but none had taken any courses on KM. Only 6.76% of the respondents had attended a workshop on KM. Findings also yield most professionals believed that several competencies including those in: communication, facilitation, coaching, mentoring, networking, negotiating, consensus building, and team working were essential for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. This paper also suggests some critical success factors for encouraging the information professionals to KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. It investigates the original views of the library and information professionals of Bangladesh regarding the skills and competences of information professionals for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. Recommendations of the study: The department of Information Science and Library Management of Dhaka University and Rajshahi University should introduce KM course(s) either in the graduate level or in the post-graduate level. As a newly emerging field of study, KM education is faced with significant challenges which continue to evolve. Informed by wider organisational perspectives, this paper presents the findings of recent research into this field, The first part of the research was in the form of an online survey canvassing the views of the wider LIS community on the responsibility of LIS schools for KM education; the second consisted of a collection of in-depth interviews with LIS academics who were engaged in education for KM. It is clear that the main challenges associated with KM education in the LIS discipline concern people's perceptions of KM and the place of KM in LIS education, Changes need to be made, both to these perceptions and to the ways in which LIS schools market and package their KM offerings. Summary: This study is to quantitatively analyze the research activity in the area of Chinese Library and Information Science (LIS) from 1975 to 2004 based on Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI). Results show that there are increases in both the number of papers and the quality of publishing channels. It was higher than the world average for Chinese research effort in LIS area. About 79% of the total LIS papers in China were from universities. The web of science (WOS) journals are representative for the Chinese LIS publications in general. The quantity and quality of papers from Hong Kong were higher than that from Mainland China. About half of the papers from China were completed through either international or domestical collaborations. The major collaborators were from Europe and North America and the higher quality of collaborations were from Oceania and North America. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Summary: This paper reports from a survey of media exposure and level of knowledge among senior high school students at various locations in Indonesia. Government budgets for education have recently been dramatically reduced in Indonesia and increasing financial burdens are put on the households, like in many other poor countries. There is a tendency to increasing differences in quality of schooling among social layers and geographical areas. Main conclusions in this research are that information asymmetry exists as a problem in society and that type of school and location matter more than media exposure for students’ knowledge level. Students in public schools generally score significantly higher than those in private institutions. Also, students’ level of knowledge tends to fall with decreasing level of geographical centrality. The content of master's programs accredited by the American Library Association was examined to assess the status of knowledge organization (KO) as a subject in current training. Data collected show that KO remains very visible in a majority of programs, mainly in the form of required and electives courses focusing on descriptive cataloging, classification, and metadata. Observed tendencies include, however, the recent elimination of the required KO course in several programs, the reality that one third of KO electives listed in course catalogs have not been scheduled in the past three years, and the fact that two-thirds of those teaching KO specialize in other areas of information science. A content analysis of JLSC's publications in 2007–2016 was conducted to investigate its publication patterns and research topics. Elements such as article titles, keywords, authors' affiliations, titles, disciplines, author collaboration and grant-funded projects were coded and examined. Findings indicate that libraries, information services, cataloging and classification, knowledge management and information retrieval were the most frequently discussed topics. Over 50% of the authors were LIS faculty members with librarian practitioners and LIS graduate students each representing about one-quarter of the total authorship. Social tagging increasingly attracts the attention of information scientists. Much research has focused on large-scale assessment of tag sets in systems. The reasons for tagging remain uncertain. To date, the library and information science (LIS) field has not explicitly explored the differences between author-supplied metadata (endo-tagging) and user- supplied metadata (exo-tagging). This article reviews a number of studies on social tagging and recommends further user-centered research into motivation; proposed research could be carried out in conjunction with studies focusing on the different reasons for endo- and exo-tagging. The University of Florida is a large research institution with a freshman class of more than seven thousand students out of a total enrollment of about fifty thousand. Although a partnership with the University Writing Program has allowed the Libraries to reach almost four thousand students this past academic year, certain barriers still exist. There are just too many students to reach and the content is too vast to cover in only a single fifty-minute class period. Furthermore, problems encountered while working with students, as well as with their graduate writing instructors who run the classes, have reduced the effectiveness of the current library sessions. To solve these problems, our instruction team created targeted information literacy activities online, so writing instructors could have students complete them outside of class. This article covers some of the challenges in coordinating a first-year information literacy program in a large university setting and how electronic course reserves can be used creatively to deliver the desired content. The implementation of Geographic Information Science (GIScience) applications and discussion of GIScience-related themes are useful for teaching fundamental geographic and technological concepts. As one of the newest geographic information tools available on the World Wide Web, Google Earth has considerable potential to enhance methods for teaching geography and helping students develop other capabilities. Google Earth's utility as a teaching tool in precollegiate environments is illustrated through development of a South Carolina-based lesson plan focused for seventh grade students that increases students' geographic awareness while also building critical thinking, analysis, and inquiry skills in support of various educational standards. The topic of cataloging education for catalogers and non-catalogers alike has been a perennial topic for practitioners. This follow- up study explores the views of library educators with regard to cataloging education. Twenty-three educators with primary teaching duties in reference, twenty-nine educators with primary teaching duties in cataloging and seventy educators whose primary teaching duties were in neither reference nor cataloging in ALA-accredited master's degree programs responded to a survey based on the ALCTS Educational Policy Statement, Appendix: Knowledge and Skills, Intellectual Access and Information Organization concerning the importance of cataloging competencies for all entry-level academic librarians.
