Chemical signaling through pheromones is an ancient and widespread mode of communication. Turtles and tortoises (chelonians) secrete pheromones via mental (chin) glands and have superior olfactory capacities rendering them a promising group to study the evolution and function of chemical communication in vertebrates. Here, we use state-of-the art proteomics and lipidomics techniques to identify and explore the possible functions of proteins and lipids secreted by mental glands in turtles. We examined four turtle species all from the family Geoemydidae, to understand among-species as well as sexual variation in the composition of mental gland secretions. Differential expression of a relatively small number (ca. 65) of proteins explained a large portion of the proteome variation across species, highlighting the existence of specific signals evolving even in closely related species. Lipidomic analysis revealed high inter-individual variation, but species differences could be attributed to five different lipid classes. The lipids found in mental glands could have a dietary origin or be related to individual condition, but may nonetheless be used in communication. We also examined sex-specific differences in the proteome of a single species (Mauremys leprosa) and found that males expressed a much larger array of proteins than females. Our findings establish a group of candidate proteins potentially involved in chemical signaling in freshwater geoemydid turtles. Alternatively, differently expressed proteins in mental glands could have an indirect link to chemical communication, being involved in pheromone transport and/or antioxidant protection. This article investigates the use of pivot templates in audio description (AD), focusing on AD template translators' performance, strategies, and attitudes. Data was collected in a study where six participants, five audiovisual translators, and one describer, were asked to translate audio descriptions for five Spanish clips from a pivot English template into Polish. Following common subtitling practice, the templates were time-coded, and culture specific references (CSR) were not localized but explained in annotations. Three data types were collected: screen recordings, scripts translated into Polish, and post-task interviews. Quantitative analysis of the scripts revealed that the translated scripts retained most CSRs and, on average, transferred 94% of the CSRs from the pivot template and that translators rendered them via tactics known from subtitling. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed that when deciding about a given tactic, translators took their own and the audience's frame of reference into account. They also considered how helpful the tactic might be in visualizing culture specific references. While the participants found CSRs to be the most challenging part of the task, they considered the task feasible mainly because of the identification and annotations, which they thought to be the main advantage of pivot templates. The combination of PbHfO3 and PbSnO3 in perovskite solid solutions presents valuable opportunities to study the formation mechanisms of incommensurate phases. Crystals of PbHf1-xSnxO3 with 8% Sn were grown and measured using broadband dielectric spectroscopy to investigate the nature of relaxation and the effects of phase transitions. Our findings reveal significant alterations in the dielectric response of the PbHf0.92Sn0.08O3 solid solution, shedding light on the influence of Sn doping on lattice dynamics during the phase transition. The Dialogical Dilemma Solution (DDS) technique is a psychological method based on dialogical self theory which aims to support decision-making processes. In the DDS technique problems are operationalized as intrapersonal decisional struggles – dilemmas between different self-aspects, each having its origin in a relationship with a particular person significant for the individual. Two studies examined the effectiveness of the DDS technique. The first pilot study was a quasi-experimental design with repeated measurements on one research group (N = 15) to which the DDS technique was applied during a 60-minute session with the psychologist. In the second study - a randomized controlled trial experiment (N = 76) performed over the Internet, the effectiveness of the DDS technique was compared with a standard CBT technique. Both studies showed that the technique was effective in facilitating problem-solving. The application of the DDS technique in Study 2 showed a higher degree of problem solution than the CBT technique and according to participants' subjective appraisal it was more helpful in understanding the problem. The following manuscript describes 10 newly synthesised pentafluorostilbene derivatives that are diverse in the character of the substituent attached to the second phenyl ring, as well as in the substitution site. The compounds were investigated for their applicability as iodonium salt photosensitisers for initiating cationic, radical and hybrid photopolymerisation. For this purpose, various spectroscopic studies were performed, such as absorbance and fluorescence quenching experiments. For kinetic research, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (real-time FT-IR) was utilised, which enabled analysis of the performance of the investigated two-component photoinitiating systems in real time. According to a variety of kinetic studies, the most effective initiator system was selected and applied for application studies in the subsequent stage, namely the preparation of photocurable polymer nanocomposites using light-initiated 3D printing technology (DLP - Digital Light Processing). The most effective two-component initiating system was tested in seven different photo-curable resins by thermogravimetry (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) to demonstrate its applicability in 3D printing of nanocomposites. In this article we report on an experiment examining audience experience when two different audio description (AD) intonation types are used. Following the classification put forward by Cabeza-Cáceres (2013), we tested twenty participants with vision loss who were asked to listen to twenty film clips with AD voiced following the adapted and emphatic intonation. All clips were rated as evoking emotions, either positive or negative. Participants' experience was measured through heart rate variability, a self-assessment emotional response (Self-Assessment Manikin), a self-assessment presence questionnaire (ITC-SOPI) and an interview. Results show that participants strongly preferred adapted intonation, particularly when presented clips were evoking negative emotions. Higher rating of intonation type was also linked to greater intensity of the emotional experience and immersion, both self-reported and measured as psychophysiological reaction. The qualitative analysis of the participants' reports on their experience indicated that adapted intonation is considered a golden mean between emotionless and melodramatic intonation. Film genre, voice type and emotional valence can be influencing factors. Emphatic intonation could be beneficial for certain genres, but a poorlymatched voice can distract the audiences. The gradual conversion of forest stands to single-aged and single-species stands is resulting in the loss of natural roosts for many animal groups. The installation of bat boxes is one solution to compensate for the lack of natural roosting opportunities. The box models differ in their design and material, which to some extent can determine their suitability for bats. We investigated the occupancy of 187 boxes made of wood, ceramic and two sizes concrete with styrofoam; and the intra-seasonal (spring migration, breeding, mating/migration) thermal profile for each type of box. The environment of the boxes was defined by parameters that could directly affect the box's thermal conditions (solar energy availability), or be related to sociality (distances, obstacles) or food availability (edge of forest, water). The box occupancy depended on the box type and the season: styrofoam-concrete boxes were preferred, with a higher occupancy during the mating and migration period (>75%), whereas the highest species richness occurred in ceramic boxes. Box types also differed significantly in their diurnal thermal profiles: the wooden boxes had inside temperatures similar to outside the box, whereas the styrofoam-concrete and with expanded clay aggregate (ceramic type) averaged 2°C higher. Overall, we found 6 bat species, although we concentrated our analysis on the most common species: Pipistrellus nathusii (88%). For this species, none of the parameters that could affect the box thermal condition had an impact on the occupancy, whereas the presence of obstacles and the distance to a water body, proved to be important. To ascertain that our results may be valid and be the result of differences in the box thermal properties, we tested the relationship of the box occupancy to the latitude, using data available in the literature. The occupancy of wooden boxes from the latter dataset significantly decreases with latitude, whereas for the concrete (with addition of sawdust or styrofoam) it increases, although this relationship is not significant and requires a larger sample. Virtuosity in the twenty-first century is undergoing a transformation. Technological changes have altered the relations between artists, audience, critics and tools, requiring a redefinition of virtuosity. In recent years, these changes have caused musicians in the contemporary classical music tradition to adopt an increasingly varied set of workflows, tools and approaches, necessitating a recontextualisation of the ideas of technique and expertise. This article discusses how new music repertoire involving the use of technology relates to five new formulations of virtuosity and connects them to three brief case studies. In exploring how hybrid virtuosity, interdisciplinary virtuosity, virtuosity of adaptability, eco-systemic virtuosity, and the New Virtuosity relate to XR performance, collaboration with an AI, and inclusive co-creation between deaf and hearing artists, I question what virtuosity means in these examples and how technology is impacting the way virtuosity is transforming. The adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies is a priority from the perspective of firms' innovation performance. Nevertheless, enterprises' efforts to follow the pace of digital transformation may be inhibited by several factors. The goal of our study is twofold. First, we try to identify and characterize the barriers businesses face in the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies, investigating the barriers' impact on the adoption of I4.0 tools. Second, we seek whether the higher level of adoption is followed by the enterprises' enhanced innovation performance. To that end, we combine a critical literature review with quantitative empirical research. The latter was conducted on a representative sample of 400 Polish manufacturers. The most popular I4.0 technologies implemented by the companies were cybersecurity and social media solutions. The most important barriers were administrative processes and capital expenditures associated with the implementation of Industry 4.0 solutions. Firms' greater involvement in innovations is followed by their more intensive implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies and the awareness of higher barriers. In this article, the application of 10 new amino-m-terphenyls in 3D-VAT printing was described. New compounds have specially designed D-π-A structure, where the central phenyl ring with nitrile and amino groups is the acceptor and the modifiable amino group is donor. Such design eliminates problem with acid scavenging and guaranteed desire properties and photoactivity as well as it allows further development of such system for 3D-VAT printing. Efficient excitation with intramolecular charge transfer provides excellent absorption and electrochemical properties, which can be tuned by modification of the amino group. The design allows photoinitiation of free radical, hybrid and especially cationic polymerisation even at 455 nm with more than 70% of monomer conversion. Such properties allow to use the developed compounds as efficient visible light photoinitiators for 3D printing of nanocomposite materials. Participation of a country in the European Union and hence the participation in the European single market, have obvious consequences for capital flows, including those in the most advanced form, i.e. foreign direct investment. Foreign direct investment is considered one of the major incentives of economic integration. Thus, this study reflects on the impact of EU membership on FDI inflows to Poland as an EU member and signals key priorities for further integration. The theoretical foundation of the study resides in the theses of the new theory of economic integration and the investment development path theory. The paper employs the descriptive approach and inductive reasoning. We highlight the benefits resulting from the position of Poland on the investment development path and indicate possible associated threats. Moreover, we discuss retrospective reflections, some of the prospects, and possible directions of action recommended to optimise the future benefits of hosting foreign investors. To estimate clinical events and evaluate the financial implications of introducing ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) to treat iron deficiency (ID) at discharge in patients hospitalized for acute heart failure (AHF) with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) <50% in the UK, Switzerland and Italy. A decision analytic cost-offset model was developed to evaluate the costs associated with introducing FCM for all eligible patients in three countries compared to a world without FCM, over a five-year time horizon. Data from AFFIRM-AHF clinical trial were used to model clinical outcomes, using an established cohort state-transition Markov model. Country-specific prevalence estimates were derived using data from real-world studies to extrapolate number of events and consequent cost totals to the population at risk on a national scale. The cost-offset modeling demonstrated that FCM is projected to be a cost-saving intervention in all three country settings over a five-year time horizon. Savings were driven primarily by reduced hospitalizations and avoided cardiovascular deaths, with net cost savings of −£14,008,238, −CHF25,456,455 and −€105,295,146 incurred to the UK, Switzerland and Italy, respectively. Although AFFIRM-AHF was a multinational trial, efficacy data per country was not sufficiently large to enable country-specific analysis, therefore overall clinical parameters have been assumed to apply to all countries. This study provides further evidence of the potential cost savings achievable by treating ID with FCM at discharge in patients hospitalized for AHF with LVEF <50%. The value of FCM treatment within the healthcare systems of the UK, Switzerland and Italy was demonstrated even within a limited time frame of one year, with consistent cost savings indicated over a longer term. The occurrence of emerging contaminants, such as estrogens, in secondary and tertiary treated effluents and in sewage-impacted water bodies is one of the major obstacles to the implementation of water reuse. This review critically evaluates the performance of emerging process of enzymatic degradation of estrogens, and its efficiency. The data collected from peer-review literature show that enzymes have been extensively applied (in both free and immobilized form) in estrogen removal. Amongst others, the use of laccase as a catalyst provides over 90% removal of estrogens. Immobilized enzymes can overcome some limitations of the free biocatalysts, including reusability. Research evidence points to the formation of by-products, such as dimers and trimers. Nevertheless, estrogenic activity assessment indicates a reduction in toxicity after enzyme treatment. The cost and stability of enzymes, as well as their performance in a real wastewater matrix, are the major obstacles to the implementation of enzymatic processes in wastewater treatment. Continued endeavors are required to enhance the successful application of enzymes in the wastewater treatment industry. Processes of enzyme-supported conversion of estrogens are reviewed and discussed. Laccase is the most commonly applied enzyme and achieves over 90% estrogen removal. Immobilization is suggested as an effective tool for enhancement of estrogen removal. Dimers and trimers have been identified as main bioconversion products of estrogens. Textile industry is one of the most important branches of the economy of many countries in the world and the importance of wool is still huge. Due to the unique properties of natural animal fibers and their positive effect on the human organism, the authors decided to evaluate and compare the quality of fibers and yarn coming from three animal species, i.e., sheep, goats, and alpacas. The study was included the physico-mechanical analysis of properties of fiber and yarn: such as diameter, breaking force, elongation at break, Young modulus, breaking strain and strain energy. The study on the selected physical and mechanical properties of the fibers showed that goat fibers are the stiffest, but concurrently the most durable, while the yarn made of sheep fibers is the most resistant, the yarn of alpaca fibers is the most elastic, and that of goat fibers is the most rigid. This study provides an empirical test of the relationship between creative potential, mating, and reproductive success in a sample using natural methods of fertility control: the Meru tribe living in the regions of Laare and Mutuati in Kenya. The participants (N = 133; 65 females) solved a figural creativity test (the Test of Creative Thinking – Drawing Production, TCT-DP) and provided information about the number of spouses, children, length of their schooling, as well as wealth. Analyses demonstrated that creative potential negatively predicted the number of offspring, but this relation was fully mediated by the number of spouses: more creative people more often stayed single and did not have offspring. Objectives: Zinc excitotoxicity and thiamine pyrophosphate deficiency (TD) are known pathogenic signals contributing to mechanism of different encephalopathies through inhibition of enzymes responsible for energy metabolism such as pyruvate dehydrogenase, aconitase or ketoglutarate dehydrogenase. The aim of this work was to investigate whether subclinical Zn excess and TD, frequent in aging brain, may combine yielding overt neuronal impairment. Results: Clonal SN56 cholinergic neuronal cells of septal origin were used as the model of brain cholinergic neurons, which are particularly susceptible to neurodegeneration in the course of Alzheimer's disease, hypoxia and other dementia-linked brain pathologies. Neither subtoxic concentration of Zn (0.10 mM) nor mild 20–25% TD deficits alone caused significant negative changes in cultured cholinergic neurons viability and their acetyl-CoA/acetylcholine metabolism. However, cells with mild TD accumulated Zn in excess, which impaired their energy metabolism causing a loss of neurons viability and their function as neurotransmitters. These negative effects of Zn were aggravated by amprolium which is an inhibitor of thiamine intracellular transport. Conclusion: Our data indicate that TD may amplify otherwise non-harmful border-line Zn excitotoxic signals yielding progress of neurodegeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The glass of lithium-sodium tetragermanate LiNaGe4O9 was prepared by fast quenching the melt. The glass was devitrified on heating under the control of differential scanning calorimetry. It was shown that the glass crystallized through a single stage. Electrical properties were measured on heating in the interval including the characteristic temperatures of the glass devitrification. It was shown that electrical conductivity increased on approaching glass transition temperature Tg from below and sharply dropped down after the glass crystallization. Charge transfer in LiNaGe4O9 glass and polycrystal was attributed to Li ions motion. The data obtained can be used for the preparation of the nanometer sized LiNaGe4O9 glass ceramics with increased ionic conductivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) was investigated in BaTiO3 ceramics, pure and doped with 2% of Eu3+ ions. The temperature and electric field dependences of ECE were investigated by the indirect method. Based on Maxwell relations, the ECE was characterized via P–T curves under different electric fields. The ECE experiments have been carried out from room temperature through the phase transition region and in the paraelectric phase. A normal positive ECE was found around the phase transition point and is of the order of 0.6 K for pure BaTiO3 and 0.15 K for the BT doped with Eu ions. The abnormal negative ECE was detected for the BaTiO3 ceramic doped with Eu ions above the temperature of the phase transition. Background: The hormonal metabolism of adipose tissue differs across regions of fat. This issue has never been verified in male patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) with and without systolic heart failure (SHF).Methods: We examined 90 male patients with CAD with and without SHF and 42 healthy controls.Results: In patients with CAD with and without SHF, androgen receptor (AR) expression in adipose tissue of the lower leg was higher than AR expression of the thoracic wall and epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) (both p < .0001 for SHF patients and both p < .001 for patients without SHF). Expression of aromatase in adipose tissue of the lower leg among patients with CAD and SHF was higher than aromatase expression of the thoracic wall and EAT (p < .001 and p < .05, respectively), and in patients without SHF, it was higher only than aromatase expression of the thoracic wall (p < .05). There were no differences in expression of estrogen receptor (ER) between three regions of adipose tissue both in men with CAD with and without SHF.Conclusions: In male patients with CAD, site-related differences of adipose tissue in expression of AR and aromatase are present regardless of coexisting SHF with the highest hormonal activity within peripheral subcutaneous adipose tissue. For decades, creativity scholars have been interested in exploring the relationship between creativity and learning. Much of the empirical work in this area has focused on examining correlational links between domain general outcomes of creativity tests and results in school achievement tests. The results of such work have been somewhat variable, but generally suggests a positive albeit modest relationship between creativity and learning. Few studies have examined the relationship between creativity and learning using a more tailored and domain-specific assessment. This paper proposes a new approach to studying creativity and learning using a newly developed Creativity and Learning in School Achievement Test (CLISAT). The first wave of a large cross-sequential study (N = 2,372), which uses the CLISAT is reported. More specifically, a continuum for conceptualizing the assessment of creativity and learning is introduced, the CLISAT validity and reliability are reported, and its relationship with intelligence and divergent thinking is explored. The CLISAT scores are also used to examine a variety of nuanced relationships between academic achievement and creativity in two academic domains (math and language). The aim of the study was to assess the incidence and severity of the frailty syndrome assessed with the Edmonton Frailty Scale. This is a cross-sectional study conducted among 382 patients (236 men and 146 women, mean age 71.9 years). The Edmonton Frailty Scale was administered during the patient's admission to the hospital. The Polish adaptation was performed using the standard methodology. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole Edmonton Frailty Scale was 0.709. The mean correlation between positions and the overall result was r = 0.180. There were no statistically significant differences between women and men in the area of Edmonton Frailty Scale mean score (p < 0.05). The socio-clinical analysis, showed statistically significant differences in the age of respondents, educational attainment, occupational activity, number of drugs taken and co-occurrence of chronic diseases. A higher values of the Edmonton Frailty Scale were indicated for individuals >70 years than for those <70 years (p < 0.001). The Edmonton Frailty Scale proved to be a reliable tool which may be used in the Polish population. The use of this questionnaire for frailty syndrome may be helpful in everyday clinical practice. This article explores how creative visual imagination and creative thinking can help children to construct mental models of space. A mixed-method study, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches and involving 98 five-year-old children (54 girls and 44 boys) demonstrated that creative visual imagination, rather than creative thinking, is linked with the knowledge and understanding of space. These results support the notion that creative visual imagination contributes to improvements in children's understanding of basic astronomical concepts. Interestingly, creative thinking was not associated with understanding and knowledge of cosmic phenomena in models taking into account creative imagination. The qualitative analysis showed differences in children's representations of space. Structural, microstructural, thermodynamic and dielectric properties were investigated in terms of Cr3+-doping. The temperature dependences of molar heat capacity in the range 120-700 K at constant pressure (cp) for PGO and PGO:Cr3+ (0.2%) crystals were shown. Wide λ-shape anomalies correspond to the second-order phase transitions from ferroelectric to the paraelectric phase taking place at 453 K and 431 K for PGO and PGO:Cr3+ (0.2%), respectively. The temperature dependences of cp for investigated crystals were approximated by the Einstein function and near the Curie temperature the cp reaches the classical Dulong-Petit limited value ∼475 J·mol−1·K−1. Temperature dependences of dielectric permittivity measured along and perpendicular to the ferroelectric axis in the temperature range 300-550 K are investigated. Nowadays gene manipulation techniques (“DNA therapy”) undergo progressive development and become widely used in industry and medicine. Since new advances in mRNA technologies are capable for obtaining particles with increased stability and translational efficiency, RNA become an attractive alternative for advancement of DNA therapy. For the past years studies have been conducted to explore different modification in mRNA cap structure and its effect on RNA properties. Recently we have shown that modification of the cap structure at the N2 position of 7-methylguanosine leads to an enhancement in translation inhibition. Currently, we have decided to exploit translational properties of mRNA capped with the ARCA (anti-reversed cap) analogs modified within N2 position of purine moiety s. We designed and synthesized three new dinucleotide cap analogs and investigated them in the rabbit reticulocyte lysate (RRL) and the human embryonic kidney derived HEK293 cell line, in vitro translational model systems. The obtained data indicate that, in both translational assays, the cap analogs synthesized by us when incorporated into mRNA improved its translational properties compared to the ARCA capped transcripts. Furthermore, the introduced modifications enhanced stability of the capped transcripts in HEK293 cells, which become higher compared to that of the transcripts capped with regular cap or with ARCA. Additionally one of the synthesized cap analogs revealed strong translation inhibition potency in RRL system, with IC50 value 1.7 µM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

State-owned enterprises (SOEs) are commonly associated with undue advantages due to preferential treatment by the state. Simultaneously they are often quoted as handicapped given the notorious state interference, management problems and agency tensions. They used to be regarded as a mainly domestic issue but in the context of globalisation and the fact that states enter treaties with new obligations, SOEs’ performance ceased to be solely a domestic problem, increasingly so as state-owned multinational enterprises (SOMNEs) emerge. This article presents the results of research on Polish SOEs’ outward foreign direct investment (OFDI). It offers an overview of overseas activities of nine major Polish firms with a state stake and aims to contribute to the conceptual literature on foreign investments conducted by SOMNEs. We distinguish between FDI by SOMNEs as specific – privileged (facilitated) or discriminated (hampered) – investments subject to the home country’s state power and the host country’s state perception. Industry 4.0 heralds the profound transformation of business models by enabling the fusion of virtual and real worlds and the application of digitization, automatization and robotics in manufacturing. We review the basic premises of Industry 4.0 and map them against the clusters’ features with the aim to establish the kind of relations between these two categories. By exploring the likely impact of clusters on Industry 4.0, our discussion revolves around the broader question of the role of regional ecosystems in industrial transformation. Clusters, thanks to the advantages such as knowledge base and mechanisms, agglomeration economies and externalities (labour pool and critical mass of firms) and favourable more stable, less uncertain environment of trust and cooperation, may facilitate the digital transformation, particularly its phasing-in and testing phases. Notwithstanding this potential, it should be stressed that not all clusters would be able to play such prominent role. Only these equipped with adequate knowledge base and providing some expertise in the field of IT solutions, robotics, automatics, and so on, i.e. the technologies crucial to Industry 4.0 seem predestined to contribute to the emergence of fully fledged industrial internet. Existing and dominant perspectives on determinants of firm internationalization have focused on the firm-specific and country-specific factors, paying less attention to the question ‘if and how can clusters foster internationalization of cluster firms’. To investigate this issue, we conducted the study focused on the Polish clusters. First, we conceptualize the impact of clusters on the internationalization of cluster firms by introducing the concepts of the propensity of internationalization and intensity of internationalization. Second, we assess the internationalization intensity of clusters in Poland and check how cluster managers facilitated the internationalization of cluster firms. The results obtained show that clusters play an important role in neutralizing the liability of foreignness suffered by cluster entities. The findings confirm that the need of internationalization which is related to the internationalization propensity emerges over the time as a cluster matures and internationalization intensity is higher in case of more dense clusters. Carbon monoxide poisoning has been documented in literature to cause severe neurological and tissue toxicity within the body. However, cardiotoxicity is often overlooked, but not uncommon. Previous research studies and case reports have revealed a significant relationship between carbon monoxide intoxication and myocardial ischemic events. We report a case of a 48-year-old male, who was exposed to severe smoke inhalation due to a house fire and subsequently developed a non-ST elevation myocardial infarction. Ischemic changes were evident on electrocardiogram, which demonstrated T-wave inversion in lead III and ST-segment depression in leads V4-V6. Elevated cardiac enzymes were also present. After standard treatment for an acute cardiac event, the patient fully recovered. This case demonstrates that myocardial ischemic changes due to carbon monoxide poisoning may be reversible if recognized in early stages and treated appropriately, thus reminding physicians that a proper cardiovascular examination and diagnostic testing should be performed on all patients with carbon monoxide poisoning. Background: Testosterone (TT) and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) are neurosteroids and their deficiencies constitute the hormone risk factors promoting the development of depression in elderly otherwise healthy men. We investigated the link between hypogonadism and depression in accordance with age and concomitant diseases in men with systolic HF using the novel scale previously dedicated for elderly population.Methods: We analysed the prevalence of depression and severity of depressive symptoms in population of 226 men with systolic HF (40-80 years) compared to 379 healthy peers. The severity of depression was assessed using the Polish long version of Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS).Results: In men aged 40-59 years the severity of depressive symptoms was greater in NYHA classes III-IV compared to NYHA classes I-II and reference group. In men aged 60-80 years depressive symptoms were more severe in NYHA class III-IV compared to controls (all p ≤ 0.001). In multivariate logistic regression model in men aged 40-59 years advanced NYHA class was associated with higher prevalence of mild depression (OR = 2.14, 95%CI: 1.07-4.29) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with higher prevalence of severe depression (OR = 69.1, 95%CI: 2.11-2264.3). In men aged 60-80 years advanced NYHA class and TT deficiency were related to higher prevalence of mild depression (respectively: OR = 2.9, 95%CI: 1.3-6.4; OR = 3.6, 95%CI: 1.2-10.63).Conclusion: TT deficiency, COPD and advanced NYHA class were associated with higher prevalence of depression in men with systolic HF. Population health and its determinants are one of the major challenges to social and economic policy. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between occupational activity and biological condition in adult working Polish men. The participants of the study were 300 men (30-65 years), healthy inhabitants of the city of Wroclaw, Poland. Seventeen measures of biological condition were examined. The subjects were divided into three different occupational groups: professionals, soldiers and skilled workers. A comparison of biological age profiles of three occupational groups showed that in the majority of characteristics, professionals had the youngest biological age, whereas skilled workers had the highest biological age. The results for soldiers were not as unambiguous, but biological parameters were generally closer to those for professionals. Inborn biological predispositions and long-term impact of the working environment can influence on the biological condition of various professional groups. Recent studies in creativity literature have demonstrated higher variability of creative ability between males and females, despite the lack of systematic sex differences in average scores on creativity tests. However, little is known about the causes of this variability and its generalizability beyond industrialized societies. This study presents the first evidence of the greater male variability in a sample of nonindustrialized, traditional Meru people residing in Kenya, Africa. The effect size of this difference was even greater than that reported in the majority of studies conducted on industrialized populations. Implications of these findings are discussed. This article describes, for the first time in 10 years, the toxicological evaluation of pesticide residues in highly consumed vegetables (35 commodities) and health risk studies. Among 1075 vegetable samples consisting mainly of tuber, root, fruiting, andBrassica, 20% of samples contained 38 pesticides in the range of 0.005–18.7 mg/kg and 1% > maximum residue limits (MRLs). Organophosphates and chloronitrile were most frequently found (20%) in the pesticide class. The highest concentration of 18.7 mg/kg was noted for dichlofluanid. Fruiting vegetables (8%), especially tomatoes (5%), were the most contaminated, while multi-residues were determined in 5% of the samples. Risk assessment was performed by analytical results and consumption on the 97.5 percentile expressed as hazard index (HI) and hazard quotient (HQ). The highest chronic HI was calculated for diazinon in lettuce (32% Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) adults and 36% children) and for forbidden dieldrin in carrots (26%, 62% ADI). The highest acute HI was estimated for dichlofluanid in lettuce (69% Acute Reference Dose (ARfD)) for adults, whereas for children it was above the acceptance values of ARfD (168%). Organophosphate insecticides with common mode of action showed the greatest HQ (108% ADI). Vegetables may not be a serious problem for consumers, but investigations on pesticide residues are necessary to ensure food safety and the protection of human health, especially toward children who are more highly exposed to pesticides than adults. Raman light scattering measurements in the temperature range from 80 to 830 K were performed on a PbZr0.72Sn0.28O3single crystal. The frequencies of the Raman lines were analyzed and discussed in terms of the sequence of structural phase transitions. It was found that Raman spectrum displays important changes near 440, 480 and 493 K. The incorporation of more than 25 mol% of Sn4+ions into the structure of PbZrO3enhances polar fluctuations aboveTCas compared to the less Sn-doped crystals. These fluctuations lead to appearance of a ferroelastic intermediate phase belowTC. Dielectric studies of a PbHf1-xSnxO3 (with x = 0.025) single crystal undergoing two structural phase transformations at about 426 and 474 K were performed in broad frequency and temperature ranges. Phase transitions sequence and their nature were established on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry measurements. Investigations of the complex dielectric permittivity in the frequency range 20 Hz to 2 MHz revealed dipolar dielectric dispersion that exists before AFE2-PE phase transition and is connected with the motion of domain walls. Analysis of temperature evolution of the first-order Raman light scattering spectra confirmed the sequence of phase transitions and gave evidence of locally broken cubic symmetry in the sample due to polar clusters of lower symmetry. Knowledge of epigenetic alterations in cancer is rapidly increasing due to the development of genome-wide techniques for their identification. DNA methylation is the best understood epigenetic adaptation and disease-specific aberrant DNA methylation is a well-recognized hallmark of cancer. Recently, novel modifications, including 5-hydroxymethylation have been described, adding a new layer of complexity to understanding the epigenetic machinery and their role in cancer. There have been significant advances in techniques for the discovery and validation of DNA methylation- and hydroxymethylation-based biomarkers, each with its own advantages and limitations. With the advent of new profiling technologies, the ever-growing list of genes that show epigenetic alterations, particularly DNA methylation, emphasizes the role of these changes for early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction of response to therapies. While there are yet many challenges to the effective implementation of DNA-methylation/hydroxymethylation-based biomarkers and epigenetic therapeutics, the field is moving closer to the goal of defining personalized medicine. Objectives. The aim of this study was to assess the potential use of predictive models to estimate professional exposure to chemicals in the workplace, such as the operating room, by simultaneous determination of the levels of exposure using a model and measurements. Methods. Measurements included determinations of sevoflurane (SEV) in the workplace air of 117 operating rooms of 31 hospitals in one Polish region. Measurements were carried out at the time of various surgical procedures during administration of anaesthetics by endotracheal intubation. The measurement results were compared with the values estimated using two models: ECETOC TRA and Stoffenmanager. Results. In one case the ECETOC TRA estimated the exposure concentration almost equal to the measured concentration but, because of the need to maintain a margin of safety in case of modelling, it can be concluded that the model underestimated the concentration. The Stoffenmanager model provided accurate exposure estimates in the examined case, and it can be used as a screening tool for the assessment of occupational inhalation exposure of medical personnel to anaesthetics. Conclusions. The results are of particular importance to the circumstances in Eastern Europe, where the levels of anaesthetics often exceed the relevant occupational exposure limits. The Ba1−xSrxTiO3(BST) ceramics were prepared by conventional ceramic method. The crystalline structure and morphology were studied by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Experimental results show that increase of sintering temperature leads to an uncontrolled precipitating of the phase with a lower content of Ti. The dielectric constant and specific heat as a function of composition and temperature were investigated. The increasing concentration of Sr ions leads to a shift of the Curie point below room temperature. To determine the elastic constants (the Young's modulus E, the shear modulus G and the Poisson's ratiov) of BST, a method of measurement of the longitudinal (νL) and transverse (νT) ultrasonic wave velocities for this type of material was developed. Acoustic properties of antiferroelectric (AFE) PbZr0.72Sn0.28O3single crystals were investigated in a wide temperature range by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. The Brillouin frequency shift of the longitudinal acoustic (LA) mode exhibited three abrupt changes corresponding to the successive phase transitions between the paraelectric, intermediate, antiferroelectric (AFE2) and antiferroelectric (AFE1) phases upon cooling. The change in the LA mode frequency and the damping maximum of PbZr0.72Sn0.28O3were much higher than those of pure PbZrO3. This was attributed to enhanced polarization fluctuations caused by increased ferroelectric distortions due to Sn substitution and the proximity to the tricritical point on the phase diagram of PbZr1-xSnxO3. In the past 15 years, a major research enterprise has emerged that is aimed at understanding associations between geographic and contextual features of the environment (especially the built environment) and elements of human energy balance, including diet, weight and physical activity. Here we highlight aspects of this research area with a particular focus on research and opportunities in the United States as an example. We address four main areas: (1) the importance of valid and comparable data concerning behaviour across geographies; (2) the ongoing need to identify and explore new environmental variables; (3) the challenge of identifying the causally relevant context; and (4) the pressing need for stronger study designs and analytical methods. Additionally, we discuss existing sources of geo-referenced health data which might be exploited by interdisciplinary research teams, personnel challenges and some aspects of funding for geospatial research by the US National Institutes of Health in the past decade, including funding for international collaboration and training opportunities. Retinoic acid is a potent cell differentiating factor, which through its nuclear receptors affects a vast range of promoter sites in brain neuronal and glial cells in every step of embryonic and postnatal life. Its capacities, facilitating maturation of neurotransmitter phenotype in different groups of neurons, pave the way for its application as a potential therapeutic agent in neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease. Retinoic acid was found to exert particularly strong enhancing effects on acetylcholine transmitter functions in brain cholinergic neurons, loss of which is tightly linked to the development of cognitive and memory deficits in course of different cholinergic encephalopathies. Here, we review cholinotrophic properties of retinoic acid and its derivatives, which may justify their application in the management of Alzheimer's disease and the related neurodegenerative conditions. The present work describes fundamental studies of extractive copper(II) ions removal from chloride media with 2-, 3-, and 4- pyridylketoximes containing 2-ethylhexyl chain. The effect of different variables on the extraction of copper(II) ions such as the concentration of chloride ions, hydrochloric acid, and ligand has been investigated. The results indicate that the extraction ability of the pyridineketoximes towards copper(II) ions depends significantly on the position of oxime group in the pyridine ring. The oxime of 3-ethyl-1-(2-pyridyl)heptan-1-one was determined as the strongest extractant of the tested oximes and metal stripping was possible by the sodium oxalate with 0.2% addition of sulfuric acid. However, the copper(II) complexes with 3-pyridylketxime reextrcation could be effectively done using water or ammonium hydroxides. Long-term harmful effects of immunosuppressive drugs and chronic rejection are a persistent impetus to establish methods to induce immunological tolerance to allografts. PCR-based studies have found evidence that humans and other placental mammals can have prolonged extremely low levels of maternal cells as well as other non-self cells, referred to as microchimerism. The persistence of these cells suggests a mechanism for the maintenance of the regulatory T-cell (Treg) responses frequently detected in offspring to non-inherited maternal antigens. We test the hypothesis that the detection of very low copy levels of insertion/deletion (Indel) alleles consistent with non-inherited maternal genes, will correlate with immune regulation to non-inherited maternal antigens as detected by a trans-vivo Delayed-Type Hypersensitivity (tvDTH) assay in kidney transplant recipients, normal donors and their immediate biological family members. Preliminary data reported here compares qPCR amplification of rare DNA templates in the peripheral blood polymorphonuclear (PMN) fraction of cells, with the results of tvDTH assays for linked suppression of recall antigen responses in the presence of non-inherited maternal antigens [NIMA]. This study was aimed at determining the effect of high pressures in the range of 100–1000 MPa/15 min, applied in 100 MPa increments, on the coagulating and proteolytic activity of commercial coagulants produced with genetic engineering methods: Maxiren, Chymogen, Chymax and of a natural rennin preparation, Hala. The coagulating activity of Hala preparation differed compared with the other preparations, due to greater resistance to high pressures, especially in the range of 500–600 MPa. The preparations produced with genetic engineering methods lost their capability for milk protein coagulation by 500 MPa. Pressurization at 200 MPa contributed to their reduced capability for casein macroproteolysis. In contrast, an increase in Chymax, Chymogen, Maxiren and Hala preparations’ hydrolytic capability for the macroproteolysis of isoelectric casein was observed upon pressure treatment at 100 and 400 MPa and for microproteolysis after pressure treatment at 200 MPa. Background: Deficiencies of anabolic hormones are common in men with heart failure (HF). It remains unclear whether the deranged metabolism of these hormones is the pathophysiological element of HF itself or is the consequence of co-morbidities or/and treatment in HF. Methods: We examined 382 men with systolic HF. Serum hormones (i.e. total testosterone [TT], DHEAS, IGF-1) were assessed using immunoassays, serum free testosterone (eFT) - using the Vermeulen equation. Results: Prevalence of TT and eFT deficiencies was similar in men with HF aged < versus ≥60 years (23% and 32% for TT and eFT deficiencies). Deficiencies in DHEAS and IGF-1 were more common in younger (63% and 92%) than older patients (48% and 73%). In men <60 years, TT deficiency was accompanied by the therapy with digoxin, eFT deficiency - the therapy with digoxin and the presence of diabetes, DHEAS deficiency - the therapy with loop diuretic (all p < 0.05). In men ≥60 years, TT deficiency - the therapy with loop diuretic, DHEAS deficiency - the therapy with spironolactone and digoxin, and hsCRP, IGF-1 deficiency - the high hsCRP (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: Deficiencies in anabolic hormones are common in younger and older men with HF. Some therapies (but not major co-morbidities) may contribute to anabolic deficiencies. Background: Heart failure (HF) is considered as a cardiogeriatric syndrome. Its fundamental pathophysiological feature is autonomic imbalance (and associated abnormalities within cardiovascular reflex control), but recent evidence suggests the involvement of deranged hormone metabolism. Both these neural and endocrine pathologies have serious clinical and prognostic consequences in patients with HF. We investigated the relations between autonomic status, baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and hormone status in men with mild systolic HF. Methods: We examined 46 men with stable systolic HF (age: 62 ± 10 years, NYHA class I/II: 10/36 [22%/78%], ischemic aetiology: 72%, left ventricular ejection fraction: 32 ± 8%). Serum hormone levels (i.e. total testosterone [TT], dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate [DHEAS], oestradiol [E2], insulin-like growth factor type 1 [IGF-1] and cortisol) were assessed using immunoassays. Estimated free testosterone (eFT) was estimated using the Vermeulen's equation. Heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed in time and frequency domains, based on 10-min resting recordings. BRS was estimated using the sequence method (BRS-Seq) and the phenylephrine test (BRS-Phe). Results: Deficiencies in circulating TT, eFT, DHEAS and IGF-1 (defined as a serum hormone ≤the 10th percentile calculated for the adequate age category in the cohort of healthy men) were found in respectively 13%, 30%, 55% and 93% of men with systolic HF. Serum SHBG ≥50 nmol/L and cortisol ≥700 nmol/L characterised, respectively 44% and 29% of men with HF. In multivariable models after the adjustment for clinical variables, the following relationships were found in examined men: DHEAS and SDNN (time domain of HRV defined as a standard deviation of average R-R intervals) ( β = 0.29, p = 0.03); E2 and: HRV-LF (ms2) ( β = 0.37, p = 0.01), HRV-HF (ms2) ( β = 0.44, p = 0.02) and BRS-Phe ( β = 0.51, p = 0.008); TT and: HRV-HF (%) ( β = 0.35, p = 0.02), HRV-LF/HF ratio ( β = −0.35, p = 0.02) and BRS-Seq ( β = 0.33, p = 0.04). Conclusions: The observed associations between reduced circulating androgens, oestrogens and lower HRV and depleted BRS, irrespectively of HF severity suggest the pathophysiological links between these two mechanisms. These results constitute the premises to investigate whether the pharmacological supplementation of depleted hormones would enable to restore the autonomic balance and improve the efficacy of reflex control within the cardiovascular system in men with systolic HF.
