The agro-waste derived valuable products are prime interest for effective management of toxic heavy metals (THMs). The present study investigated the efficacy of biochars (BCs) on immobilization of THMs (Cr, Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni and Cd), bioaccumulation and health risk. Agro-wastes derived BCs including wheat straw biochar (WSB), orange peel biochar (OPB), rice husk biochar (RHB) and their composite biochar (CB) were applied in industrial contaminated soil (ICS) at 1% and 3% amendments rates. All the BCs significantly decreased the bioavailable THMs and significantly (p < 0.001) reduced bioaccumulation at 3% application with highest efficiency for CB followed by OPB, WSB and RHB as compared to control treatment. The bioaccumulation factor (BAF), concentration index (CI) and ecological risk were decreased with all BCs. The hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) of all THMs were <1, except Cd, while carcer risk (CR) and total cancer risk index (TCRI) were decreased through all BCs. The overall results depicted that CB at 3% application rate showed higher efficacy to reduce significantly (p < 0.001) the THMs uptake and reduced health risk. Hence, the present study suggests that the composite of BCs prepared from agro-wastes is eco-friendly amendment to reduce THMs in ICS and minimize its subsequent uptake in vegetables. In this study we investigated the efficacy of a novel material parthenium weed (Parthenium hysterophorus L.) biochar (PBC), iron doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (nFe-ZnO), and biochar modified with nFe-ZnO (Fe-ZnO@BC) to adsorb heavy metals (HMs) and reduce their uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in a highly chromite mining contaminated soil. The co-application of the applied soil conditioners exhibited a positive effect on the immobilization and restricted the HMs uptake below their threshold levels in shoot content of wheat. The maximum adsorption capacity was because of large surface area, cation exchange capacity, surface precipitation, and complexation of the soil conditioners. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) showed porous smooth structure of parthenium weed derived biochar that helped in HMs adsorption, increase the efficiency of soil fertilizers and nutrients retention which help in the enhancement soil condition. Under different application rates the highest translocation factor (TFHMs) was obtained at 2 g nFe-ZnO rate followed the descending order: Mn > Cr > Cu > Ni > Pb. The overall TFHMs was found <1.0 indicating that low content of HMs accumulation in roots from soil slight transferred to shoot, thus satisfying the remediation requirements. Wheat is considered as an important staple food which is grown in a chromite mining contaminated soil containing toxic HMs releasing from weathering of mafic and ultramafic rocks in the study area. The present research work is significantly beneficial in identifying the efficiency of treatment technologies to immobilize toxic HMs in soil. Radon (Rn) is a radioactive, odorless, and colorless gas which has a half-life of 3.83 days. One of the main sources of Rn which is directly consumed by the population is Groundwater (Tube well, Bore well, Hand pump). Rn gas is found naturally in rock, soil and water and can be considered as main health risk factor in terms of lung cancer, stomach diseases, leukemia and childhood cancer. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration of Rn in the drinking water sources, appraisal of health risk for children in District Bannu, Pakistan. Total of 98 drinking water samples were analyzed by using RAD-7 detector. The experimental data was statistically analyzed by using Pearson's test. The experimental and epidemiological data of the study area are shown on map using ArcGIS version 10.5. The analytical results show that Rn in drinking water was found varying from 10.1 Bq/l to 53.1 Bq/l with the average highest and lowest depth of 60 ft to 550 ft respectively. Pearson's test was used to show the concentration of Rn verses the depth of the water sources so +1 positive linear correlation was observed among the depth of water sources and the concentration of Rn. Out of 98 drinking water samples 40 sample were above the maximum contaminant level of 11.1 Bq/l (MCL) set by WHO, 2002. The effective doses (AED and DEing) for children ranges from 0.00001 to 3.792 mSv/y which exceeds the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of Rn (0.1mSv/y) in 30 drinking water samples. On the basis of analytical results Rn high concentration areas are shown on the map using IDW model of interpolation and health risks were shown in areas where Rn content was above the maximum contaminant level. High correlations of diseases related to Rn were observed amongst the residence of the study area. Gastrointestinal diseases, brain tumor, lung cancer and kidney diseases were observed among the children of the study area. Damage to the dura mater often occurs in trauma cases of the head and spine, surgical procedures, lumbar punctures, and meningeal diseases. The resulting damage from dural tears, or durotomy, causes cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to leak out into the surrounding space. The CSF leak induces intracranial hypotension, which can clinically present with a range of symptoms not limited to positional headaches which can confound accurate diagnosis. Current methods of evaluation and management of dural tears are discussed herewith, as well as the present understanding of its etiology, which may be classified as related to surgery, procedure, trauma, or connective tissue disorder. We piloted a MEDLINE® database search of literature, with emphasis on the previous five years, combining keywords such as "cerebrospinal fluid leak," "surgery," "procedure," and "trauma" to yield original research articles and case reports for building a clinical profile. Patients with suspected dural tears should be evaluated based on criteria set by the International Headache Society, radiological findings, and a differential diagnosis to accurately identify the tear and its potential secondary complications. Afflicted patients may be treated promptly with epidural blood patches, epidural infusions, epidural fibrin glue, or surgical repair. At this time, epidural blood patches are the first line of treatment. Dural tears can be prevented to an extent by utilizing minimally invasive techniques and certain positions for lumbar puncture. Surgical, trauma, lumbar puncture, and epidural injection patients should be observed very carefully for dural tears and CSF leaks as the presenting clinical manifestations can be highly individualized and misguiding. Because studies have demonstrated a high frequency of dural tears, particularly in spinal surgery patients, there is a need for prospective studies so that clinicians can develop an elaborate prevention strategy and response to avoid serious, unseen complications. Introduction: The pineal gland, an endocrine organ of the posterior cranial fossa famously involved in sleep and wakefulness, has continually been a topic of scientific advancement and curiosity. Methods: We review present an up-to-date review including the anatomy, embryology, and physiology of the pineal gland and its ability to secrete hormones including melatonin, pathophysiology of pineal gland tumors, cysts, and calcifications, their clinical presentation including their association with parkinsonism and precocious puberty, and various treatment approaches. Results: Exploring the biochemistry of melatonin, various calcification morphologies, and pineal tumors may uncover a wider role and the exhaustive case study consolidation allows clinicians to carefully review the literature and aid their treatment approaches. This study aimed to determine the heavy metals (HMs) contaminations in soil of the Hattar industrial estate (HIE), Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. For this purpose, various types of soils were collected in HIE and analyzed for the HMs concentrations. The HMs showed highest contamination levels in wastewater irrigated agriculture soil (WWIAS), followed by waste dump site soil (WDSS), and the lowest in range land soil (RLS). Determined HMs concentrations were used for pollution quantification factors, including contamination factors (CFs), pollution load index (PLI), ecological risk factor (ER), and potential health risk assessment, including chronic or non-cancer and cancer risk levels. Porphyrias are inherited disorders of the heme biosynthetic pathway, usually characterized by dermatological changes due to the accumulation of byproducts in the pathway. Select porphyrias also affect the nervous system, namely hereditary coproporphyria, acute intermittent porphyria and variegate porphyria. Complications include paralysis, hyponatremia which can risk central pontine myelinolysis, seizures and coma. Neurological complications usually result from severe episodes of acute attacks. Acute attacks may also elicit neuropsychiatric symptoms such as confusion, hallucinations, anxiety and psychosis. However, these manifestations are generally self-limiting. Due to the generally low incidence of porphyria and full knowledge the associated neurological and psychiatric manifestations, we review the relevant porphyrias along with their clinical manifestations, evaluation, and management to raise its awareness in the clinical picture and to prevent misdiagnosis. Purpose: Lumbar spinal stenosis is characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal, which subsequently induces impingement of neural elements in the lumbar spine. Thus, symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis are typically associated with damage to those neural elements. Herewith, we target the genitourinary symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis and the importance of differentiating these symptoms from other genitourinary pathologies, namely benign prostatic hyperplasia. Materials and methods: MeSH and keywords relevant to lumbar spinal stenosis and the organs of the urinary tract were used to a guide a literature search on MEDLINE. Results: Bladder dysfunction, lower urinary tract symptoms (e.g. urinary incontinence, detrusor overactivity and underactivity, as well as frequent urinary tract infections), renal osteodystrophy and sexual dysfunction (e.g. erectile dysfunction and priapism) are implicated in lumbar spinal stenosis. Conclusions: It is imperative for urologists to conduct a thorough history and physical examination so that they will not misdiagnose secondary genitourinary manifestations of lumbar spinal stenosis as primary problems or misunderstand secondary problems. Vigorous knowledge on the occurrence and distribution of toxic metals (TMs) in theenvironment is needed to assess their toxicological impacts on human health especially in developing countries like Pakistan. For the first time, the concentrations of TMs like Ni, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cd in both ground and surface water and their potential health risk in the district Buner (Pakistan) were determined using Inductive Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS, Agilent Technologies, 7500 CX, USA) and their results were compared with their safe limits defined by Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) and World Health Organization WHO (2008). The concentrations of TMs, like Pb (43% and 86%), Ni (63% and 32%), Cr (41%), and Cd (1% and 20%) in drinking water samples exceeded their respective permissible limits set by Pak-EPA and WHO (2008), respectively. The mean concentrations of TMs were found in decreasing order Ni > Pb > Cr > Cd > Zn. The HRI values of TMs in drinking water samples for both adults and children were observed <1 indicating no health risk to the local population. Excessive marble industries are present in the study area; therefore, it is necessary to reduce metal contamination via proper disposal and treatment of marble wastewater, for which the government should take serious action in the study area. In this study, sediment samples were collected from Kabul River (Pakistan) and analyzed for heavy metals including zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb). The physico-chemical characteristics were also determined which are known to influence the metal accumulation within the sediment matrix. Heavy metal concentrations (mg kg−1, dry weight basis) in the sediment were in the order of Zn > Cr > Ni > Pb > Cd. Heavy metal concentrations were found in moderately polluted category set by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). However, Cr and Ni concentrations exceeded the screening levels at the sites where a larger volume of industrial effluents enter into Kabul River. Higher concentrations of almost all the tested metals were detected at locations of greater industrial and sewage entry points. Sediment organic matter (OM) exhibited strong correlation with Pb (R2= 0.80), Ni (R2= 0.67) and Zn (R2= 0.46), indicating that OM plays a significant role in metal retention and accumulation. The findings of this study showed that Kabul River is reasonably contaminated with selected heavy metals released from anthropogenic sources. The green macroalgae present in freshwater ecosystems have attracted a great attention of the world scientists for removal of heavy metals from wastewater. In this mesocosm study, the uptake rates of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) byOedogonium westi(O. westti) were measured. The equilibrium adsorption capabilities ofO. westtiwere different for Cd, Ni, Cr, and Pb (0.974, 0.418, 0.620, and 0.261 mgg–1, respectively) at 18°C and pH 5.0. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb were observed from 55–95%, 61–93%, 59–89%, and 61–96%, respectively. The highest removal efficiency was observed for Cd and Cr from aqueous solution at acidic pH and low initial metal concentrations. However, the removal efficiencies of Ni and Pb were higher at high pH and high concentrations of metals in aqueous solution. This study aimed to assess the drinking water quality and human potential health risk in Peshawar, which is the most populous district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. Water was randomly collected throughout Peshawar District (urban = 45 samples and rural = 29 samples). These samples were analyzed for heavy metal (As, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) concentrations using the atomic absorption spectrometer (Perkin Elmer, AAS-PEA-700). Heavy metal concentrations in drinking water revealed the highest pollution index (PI) values—17.80, 11.92, 7.50, and 5.70 for the Pb, Cr, Cd, and Ni, respectively. The contaminations of Cd and Pb were significantly higher (p< .05) than their maximum allowable limits set by the World Health Organization. Heavy metal contaminations in drinking water were evaluated for health risk assessment: the chronic risk or hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk. Results revealed that HQ values were >1 for the Cd and Pb, suggesting that the exposed human beings could be at chronic risk. Several anthropogenic and natural sources are considered as the primary sources of toxic metals in the environment. The current study investigates the level of heavy metals contamination in the flora associated with serpentine soil along the Mafic and Ultramafic rocks northern-Pakistan. Soil and wild native plant species were collected from chromites mining affected areas and analyzed for heavy metals (Cr, Ni, Fe, Mn, Co, Cu and Zn) using atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS-PEA-700). The heavy metal concentrations were significantly (p < 0.01) higher in mine affected soil as compared to reference soil, however Cr and Ni exceeded maximum allowable limit (250 and 60 mg kg−1, respectively) set by SEPA for soil. Inter-metal correlations between soil, roots and shoots showed that the sources of contamination of heavy metals were mainly associated with chromites mining. All the plant species accumulated significantly higher concentrations of heavy metals as compared to reference plant. The open dumping of mine wastes can create serious problems (food crops and drinking water contamination with heavy metals) for local community of the study area. The native wild plant species (Nepeta cataria,Impatiens bicolor royle,Tegetis minuta) growing on mining affected sites may be used for soil reclamation contaminated with heavy metals. Shaken Baby Syndrome occurs in infants as a result of the brain pushing against the skull due to severe acceleration-deceleration forces. Symptoms of Shaken Baby Syndrome include subdural, subarachnoid, and retinal hemorrhages. MRI and ocular examinations are used to determine the extent of mental and visual damage and β-amyloid precursor protein immunohistochemical staining is used to detect axonal injuries. Surgeries such as Subdural hemorrhage (SDH) evacuation surgery and the Burr hole craniotomy are used to treat Shaken Baby Syndrome; however, the prognosis is poor in many cases. Because of the severity of Shaken Baby Syndrome and its traumatic and sometimes fatal effects, it is important to educate new parents, nurses, and doctors on the syndrome in order to prevent incidents. The present study was performed to assess drinking water quality and potential health risk in the Nowshera District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. For this purpose drinking water samples were collected from local available sources and analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics, arsenic (As) and heavy metals. Results revealed high levels of toxic heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and As contaminations in the drinking water. Results were evaluated for chronic risk including average daily intake (ADI) and hazard quotient (HQ). Among heavy metals the HQ values were highest for Cd (5.80) and As (2.00). Therefore, populations in the study area may be at a low level of chronic toxicity and carcinogenic risk. Statistical analyses showed that contribution of different drinking water sources to the mean contaminant levels in the study area was insignificant (p =.53). Correlation analysis further revealed that anthropogenic activities were the main sources of contamination, rather than geogenic. Abstract: The fraction distributions of heavy metals have attracted more attention because of the relationship between the toxicity and their speciation. Heavy-metal fraction distributions in soil contaminated with mine tailings (soil A) and in soil irrigated with mine wastewater (soil B), before and after treatment with disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), were analyzed with Tessier's sequential extraction procedures. The total contents of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) exceeded the maximum permissible levels by 5.1, 33.3, 3.1, and 8.0 times in soil A and by 2.6, 12.0, 0.2, and 1.9 times in soil B, respectively. The results showed that both soils had high levels of heavy-metal pollution. Although the fractions were found in different distribution before extraction, the residual fraction was found to be the predominant fraction of the four heavy metals. There was a small amount of exchangeable fraction of heavy metals in both contaminated soils. Furthermore, in this study, the extraction efficiencies of Pb, Cd, and Cu were higher than those of Zn. After extraction, the concentrations of exchangeable Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn increased 84.7 mg·kg-1, 0.3 mg·kg-1, 4.1 mg·kg-1, and 39.9 mg·kg-1 in soil A and 48.7 mg·kg-1, 0.6 mg·kg-1, 2.7 mg·kg-1, and 44.1 mg·kg-1 in soil B, respectively. The concentrations of carbonate, iron and manganese oxides, organic matter, and residue of heavy metals decreased.
