There will be an increased need for psychologists to provide mental health services in residential aged care facilities. Experience while training is invaluable to improving both confidence and interest in working in this area. Awareness of potential barriers and ethical situations that may impede good mental health care is necessary when providing supervision. This paper reviews issues that supervisors need to be aware of when working with students in this clinical space. Barriers and enablers of clinical placements in residential aged care settings are discussed. Models of care, ethical considerations relating to risk, consent and working systemically, multiple clients, practical difficulties of being off-site and clinical aspects of adapting therapy to residential care settings are identified as key issues related to supervising students. Potential solutions, resources and practical approaches to these issues are also highlighted. A positive approach to the complexities of working in residential aged care settings can lead to quality supervision and clinical care in this much needed area. Concerns have been raised about how clinical psychologists will meet future workforce demands. There is a lack of supervisors with experience in providing clinical guidance in this area. Several unique ethical issues can arise within supervision in residential aged care contexts that need to be discussed with students to improve their competence. We often think of decision support systems (DSS) simply as expanding managerial information-processing capabilities. When a manager relies on the functional capabilities of a particular DSS in solving a problem, however, he or she is actually restricted to some subset of the full range of possible decision-making processes. DSS builders may wish to use this "restrictiveness" characteristic as a design variable, deliberately choosing the ways in which a DSS restricts its users. To do so effectively, builders need to know whether restrictiveness should be treated as an absolute or a relative; attribute. A key research question, therefore, is whether all users will be restricted identically by a given DSS. This paper reports on an experiment exploring if and how different users of the same DSS differ in their perceptions of system restrictiveness. Subjects used three DSS and ranked them from most to least restrictive. The results indicated that, while there was a significant similarity among rankings, there were also substantial differences. Objective The benefits of befriending programs for aged care residents are well documented. However, there is a paucity of research on the befriender's experience. The aim of this paper is to provide insight into the experiences of befriending from the perspective of befrienders in aged care residencies. It is intended to provide a snapshot into the complexities inherent in the befriending role, in order to prepare potential befrienders with a realistic expectation of this role, and to generate the type of training that is needed to assist befrienders to address such challenges. Method Three postgraduate psychology students participated in Swinburne University's Wellbeing Clinic for Older Adults' Befriending Program. After a year of befriending, exploratory case studies were produced from the befrienders' first-hand experience. Results Each case study is composed of three subheadings: role description, challenges, and role uncertainty. Befriending predominately consisted of companionship and conversation, and befrienders were exposed to confronting discussions, memory decline, and an uncertainty surrounding their role. Conclusions Greater insight has been provided to future befrienders into what befriending entails, as well as some of the challenges and benefits of the role. This may minimise their apprehension towards befriending. Befriending has the potential to benefit both the befriender and the older adult and could be a viable and sustainable solution to combating loneliness in aged care residencies. Formal training programs that provide counselling skills and guidelines on the specifics of what the role entails may facilitate future befriending and should be investigated in future research. The role of psychologists and other mental health professionals in long-term care settings is undefined in Australia. Graduate psychology students receive little training in clinical geropsychology, and residential aged care providers do not routinely employ psychologists within such settings. Further, despite high rates of depression, neurocognitive problems, and other mental health problems, residents are rarely referred for evidence-based psychological treatment. This article presents four case studies showing how psychology services may be employed in such settings within the context of a postgraduate psychology placement programme. These case studies emphasise the importance of engagement, the use of flexible and individualised treatment approaches, and the involvement of family and professional carers in the provision of psychological services. The article presents clinician's quick guide of evidence-based approaches on psychological treatments for depression and anxiety with older adults living in residential aged care facilities. Topics include individuals are among the most vulnerable in our society, with high rates of depressive and anxiety symptoms; and psychological interventions that have been validated for residential aged care populations include cognitive-behavioral and reminiscence therapies.

This is the second in a series of papers concerning forensic immigration social work. The first paper examined the broad issues and types of cases that require consultation by a forensic social worker in immigration cases. This paper will examine the pertinent legal standards that the forensic social worker must be aware of and the essential areas of inquiry in the evaluation of spousal abuse cases. The following two papers will examine the other two major types of cases referred from immigration lawyers: asylum and criminal and “hardship” immigration cases. As a Meiji-period import, the detective novel makes a telling case study in the complexities of Japanese cultural borrowing. This article underlines the hybrid nature of one typical translated detective novel, Kuroiwa Ruikō's Kettō no hate (The consequences of a duel), which is an often loose rendering into Japanese of the French writer Fortuné Hippolyte Du Boisgobey's novel Suites d'un duel . On the one hand, the translation makes overt appeals to Meiji-period readers' hunger for the modern, the novel, and the foreign; on the other, it conspicuously recycles narrative conventions of the dokufu-mono , or 'poisonous woman story', a popular Meiji-period genre whose representations of alluring but ruthless silver-tongued female criminals had deep roots in the old, native tradition of gesaku , or 'frivolous writing'. This melding of the new and the old in Ruikō's translation suggests the necessity of revising our current models for understanding cultural borrowing, which rely too heavily upon the notions of straightforward Japanese imitation or, alternatively, of Western cultural dominance.
