After 30 years of collective effort and intensive discussion, Mark Solms and the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London have finally succeeded in completing all 24 volumes of the Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (RSE). Within the framework of the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society, we have been working for 12 years on the primarily digital historical-critical (historisch-kritische) Sigmund Freud Edition (FE). The FE strives for completeness. A look back in history also shows how closely the German and English editions are linked with each other and how deeply Freud himself was involved right up to the end of his life, and thus also authorised these editions. RSE and FE mark the current status of a development that is still ongoing. They have different approaches, tasks and foci; however, with regard to text-critical criteria, in many ways, they can support each other. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article argues that the editorial history of Elizabeth Cary's letters has powerfully influenced how the letters are read and understood today. In particular, it suggests that an editorial organisation that cleaves to Cary's conversion has had a narrowing effect, straightjacketing the letters as "conversion writing" and underplaying the significances of texts actually enmeshed in a more expansive range of epistolary activity. The article forwards an alternative editorial strategy – a site-based method which allows for the consideration of Cary not only as a Catholic convert (an exceptional figure) but also as an early modern woman with companionate connections to other early modern writers deploying the epistolary form to address quotidian matters such as penury, precarity, homelessness and family breakdown. Dealing with the neglected issue of "extant-ness" throughout, the article argues that editors of early modern women's letters can be more explicit about the ways in which chance, contingency and curation influence that which survives. It makes a case for embracing "extant-ness" as a concept which might usefully undergird all epistolary enquiry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a new and extended edition of 'God send vs þe dew of heuene', with a full translation and commentary. This Middle English-Latin bilingual lyric of the fourteenth century is written haphazardly in the upper margin of Oxford, Bodleian Library, MS Digby 172, fol. 55 r, and is annotated with alterations and variants indicative of compositional and perhaps compilational activity. Through literary analysis of the lyric's prosodic form and homiletic context, and through a careful assessment of its mise-en-page and palaeographic features, this article produces a dynamic edition which preserves the layers of accretion and revision present in the manuscript text. In this article I consider, through the example of mouvance, both Roland Barthes's engagement with medieval culture and the contribution that medievalists can make to Barthes studies. The term mouvance was proposed by Paul Zumthor to account for textual instability in a pre-print age of often anonymous texts. Barthes uses Zumthor's term twice, in a lecture from Comment vivre ensemble (How to Live Together) given on February 2, 1977. Focusing on these occurrences, I show how Barthesian mouvance shares with Zumthor's definition an emphasis on instability, while also acting as a gloss on one of Barthes's own terms: idiorrythmie (idiorrhythmy). Barthes's use of the term mouvance is one striking example of his own engagement with contemporary medieval scholarship. Yet I also argue that mouvance, for Barthes, is a matter of form as much as content. Accordingly, I suggest that medievalists, and the notion of mouvance, can help respond to editorial challenges surrounding Barthes's work, especially in the case of posthumously published texts with oral origins that exist in several different versions. The starting point for this article is Nigel Palmer’s contribution to research on Meister Eckhart. It focuses on Dominican adaptations in the manuscript MS. Laud Misc. 479 in the Bodleian Library, one of two manuscripts of the collection “Paradisus anime intelligentis” (before 1340) which unites at least 31 sermons by Meister Eckhart together with sermons by Dominican Lektors. The modifications and abbreviations alter the text in line with Dominican doctrine. The Table of Contents presents a treasure trove to be used both for assessing the content as for questions of editorial practice. This is demonstrated by analysing the newly edited (Lectura Eckhardi IV) sermon 87 of the critical Eckhart edition. Der Beitrag knüpft an der Bedeutung Nigel Palmers für die Forschung über Meister Eckhart an. Er stellt die Handschrift MS. Laud Misc. 479 der Bodleian Library in den Mittelpunkt, eine von zwei Handschriften der Sammlung “Paradisus anime intelligentis”: Vor 1340 entstanden, versammelt sie mindestens 31 Predigten Meister Eckharts gemeinsam mit Predigten dominikanischer Lektoren. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht der stark bearbeitete Charakter: hier vor allem Kürzungen und Anpassungen an die dominikanische Doktrin. Das Inhaltsverzeichnis der Sammlung erscheint als ‘Fundgrube’, die sowohl für die inhaltliche Untersuchung als auch für editorische Fragen nutzbar gemacht werden kann. Building on the growing interest among Translation Studies scholars in ‘intralingual translation’ and hoping to contribute to it by some data-driven descriptive work, this paper sets out to investigate the specific case of rewritings of Shakespeare in modern English. Examples will be taken fromRomeo and Juliet(c. 1595), a play for which more than a dozen such versions have been found. These are born from a perceived need to bridge the comprehension gap between Shakespeare’s play and later audiences. The paper will look into the nature of this comprehension gap and the various (other) ways of dealing with it, before comparing the corpus of modernized versions ofRomeo and Juliet. A great variety of translational approaches emerges from the study, and there is no less variety as to how these rewritings appear to be labelled or classified, suggesting that they belong in a generic no-man’s land. The idea of translating Shakespeare into modern English generally invites negative reactions; the main arguments used in these controversies and their underlying political and cultural assumptions are also briefly examined. The unedited correspondence between Gustavo Gili i Roig and Ángel Valbuena Prat allows us to discover important details about the genesis and the intricate editing process of the original and innovative Historia de la literatura española (1937). Because of some notes Valbuena wrote in his major work, he was involved after the Spanish Civil War in a police investigation that led him to publish a clandestine edition of his Historia de la literatura española. Thanks to the documents stored in the prosecution dossier, as well as other personal papers, we can now reconstruct these events involving one of the most brilliant and emblematic minds in Spanish literary historiography. There are patients whose outstanding feature is a particular difficulty in “communicating with themselves.” According to Bion, who reconceptualized Freud's theory, all of us have in our inner world the potential for both producing and blocking alpha-transformations. When they are blocked, beta-elements are formed, which are unable to generate thought. Our capacity to think and to think “ourselves” depends exclusively on alpha-elements. Patients suffering from problems derived from a compensated “structural mental void” are unable to think. Following Bion, the “non-edited” would, generally speaking, be one of the facts that condition the formation of beta-elements. The production of beta-elements transforms these personalities into “functional illiterates.” To what extent can we ignore the “novelties” that these patients present us with through the production of beta-elements and “bizarre objects”? I wonder whether the concepts of “repetition” and “re-edition,” as they are currently used in the clinical process, are not actually casting a shadow over our minds, thus thwarting our ability to assess the total dimension of this “functional illiterate” condition. The analyst's mind can be the first link in a patient's chain of unthinkable thoughts: (1) repetition; (2) embryonic thoughts; (3) the non-edited; (4) structural mental void; (5) functional illiterate; and (6) mental abortions. There are some parallel strands between the FRBR model and the basic concepts of descriptive bibliography, above all, the way of thinking about bibliographic resources and the fundamental realization that work and manifestation are different things. Much of the discussion since the model was introduced in 1997 has been focussed on the expression entity. The writer hopes to contribute to this discussion by showing why the model does not necessarily bring about the required result when applied to hand press resources.
