Abstract

This paper shows the methodology and results of the evaluation of the cleaning system of a Kraft paper mill. This evaluation was made keeping in mind variables of that system such as the pulp stock consistency percentage, ash content, air level in the pulp stock, and differential of pressure through the cleaners, for the analysis of a series of samplings carried out during the production of the different paper grades. On the basis of the results, possible modifications or improvements of the cleaning system were proposed, which will allow a reduction in pulp and water losses, energy consumption, and the amount of air required in the paper machine. SUMMARYIntroduction: Whatman FTA is an alternativeto transport and store differenttypes of samples and optimizes the time,storage space and costs. For many yearsthis method was used routinely and manymedical samples were stored for long periodsof time.Objective: To determine the effect of storagetime of blood samples on Whatmanpaper on the DNA concentration.Materials and methods: One hundred andten peripheral blood samples on filter paperwere kept for a period of one to threeyears. These samples were kept as part ofECLAMC program. DNA extraction wasperformed by means of ion exchange resins(Chelex-100®). And verified by PCRamplification of GAPDH gene. NanoDropquantified DNA on each samples.Results: The storage time was differentialwith a range of 520-1135 days. DNA concentrationvaries from0.81ng/uL to 5.54ng/uL. The 260/280 ratio ranged from -5.22 to14.17nm. The ratio 260/230 is provided ina range from 0.27 to 1.39nm.Conclusion: A decrease in concentrationin the sample of DNA (ug / uL) representsa negative change in the expected value inthe storage time.Key words: Dried blood spot testing, DNAdegradation, PCR technique, gene amplification.

Abstract

Publication of papers in refereed journals is an essential activity for the diffusion and advancement of scientific and technological knowledge and allows a direct evaluation of the productivity of research groups. In this work, some guidelines and tips are given to write up each section of a scientific paper with the aim of increasing its probability of acceptance when reviewed by referees and editors. The strategy in which the writing starts at the inner sections of the paper [Methodology, (Appendices), Results, Discussion, Conclusions] and follows at the outer sections [Introduction, Title, Abstract, References, Acknowledgments] is highly recommended. A description is given of the stages of the publication process (final preparation, submission to a journal, reviewing, and editorial production) and a compilation is made of the quality criteria that referees and a journal editor take into account to review a paper. The abstract is a part of scientific articles placed at the beginning of such. It guides us quickly and accurately about the information we will find in the complete manuscript. It must be written by selecting the appropriate words and sentences to achieve consistent, clear, and concise contents. We can group the abstract into two types according to their content: the descriptive abstract, which guides the reader regarding the contents of the article but requires reading the full text for further details; and the informative abstract, which condenses the study and provides accurate data about the contents of the paper. The abstract has become a fundamental part of the scientific article, especially with the explosive growth of information; an adequate and well-built abstract allows scientists and researchers to recognize the work done by its authors. Attention should be dedicated to its construction because the success of our publication depends upon the very abstract. El resumen es un segmento del artículo científico que se ubica al inicio del mismo, y nos orienta en forma rápida y precisa sobre la información que encontraremos en el manuscrito completo. Debe ser escrito seleccionando adecuadamente las palabras y oraciones, para lograr un contenido coherente, claro y conciso. Podemos agrupar a los resúmenes en dos de acuerdo con su contenido: los descriptivos, que orientan al lector sobre el contenido del artículo y hacen necesaria una lectura del manuscrito para conocer detalles; y los informativos, que condensan el estudio pero brindan datos precisos sobre su contenido. El resumen se ha convertido en una pieza fundamental en un artículo, sobre todo con la creciente explosión de la información; además un resumen adecuado y bien construido permite que los científicos e investigadores reconozcan la labor realizada por sus autores. Debemos prestar mucha atención a su elaboración porque de él depende el éxito de nuestra publicación.

Abstract

El Clorpirifos es uno de los plaguicidas que más se utiliza en Colombia, siendo el de mayor uso en el departamento de Norte de Santander, en donde su utilidad ha sido comprobada para proteger cultivos de arroz, café, etc. No obstante, debido al uso inadecuado por parte de los agricultores, este ha traído consecuencias negativas para el medio ambiente y la salud de las personas, es así como para el año 2014 se registraron 715 casos de intoxicación por esta sustancia en el departamento. Con el fin de generar una alternativa técnicamente viable para el tratamiento de las aguas residuales agrícolas con contenido de Clorpirifos y avanzar en la descontaminación de los cuerpos de agua receptores, se evaluó la eficacia del acople de fotocatálisis heterogénea en un Colector Parabólico Compuesto - CPC y un proceso biológico aerobio de lodos activados en batch. La fotocatálisis se realizó en un CPC de 0.83 m2, usando luz solar como fuente de energía (20, 40 y 60 KJ.L-1) y dióxido de titanio - TiO2 Degussa P25 como catalizador (100, 350 y 600 mg.L-1), a pH de 3, 6 y 9 y como proceso biológico aerobio se utilizó el Test de Zahn-Wellens. El proceso fotocatalítico alcanzó una remoción máxima de DQO del 44.2% y COD del 35.3%, para condiciones óptimas 159.19 mg.L-1 de TiO2 y 3.47 unidades de pH. El proceso biológico logró degradar el 17.0% de DQO y 9.3% del COD para el agua residual sin pretratamiento. Después del pretratamiento mediante fotocatálisis, la remoción del proceso biológico aumentó a un 88.2% de DQO y 67.8% de COD. De los resultados obtenidos se establece que el acople de fotocatálisis heterogénea y un proceso biológico aerobio, es una alternativa viable para el tratamiento de aguas residuales agrícolas con presencia de Clorpirifos

Abstract

In recent years, the increase in the use and production of antibiotics for the protection of animals has been associated not only with human health problems due to bacterial resistance, but also with environmental problems, which have led to the deterioration of the water resources, since a large part of these are discharged into the environment without any type of treatment. This situation has highlighted the fact that a large part of the antibiotics are not efficiently removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants, being necessary to implement efficient and low-cost treatment alternatives. The evaluation of the removal of the antibiotic florfenicol was carried out using pilot horizontal subsurface flow wetlands, with a hydraulic retention time of 4.2 d, planted with macrophytes (Phragmites australis) and using concentrations of 10, 15, 20 and 25 mg/L of florfenicol. It was concluded that the removal of the antibiotic and the COD was decreasing over time, with a maximum removal percentage of 77.9% of florfenicol and 85.2% of COD during the first days of exposure. The results found allowed to demonstrate that florfenicol was not retained in the granular material of the wetlands, even in the macrophytes and that the predominant removal mechanism was biological degradation. Resumen En los últimos años, el aumento en el uso y producción de antibióticos para la protección de los animales se ha asociado no solo con problemas a la salud humana debidos a la resistencia bacteriana, sino también con problemas ambientales, que han llevado al deterioro de los recursos hídricos, ya que gran parte de estos son descargados al ambiente sin ningún tipo de tratamiento. Esta situación ha dejado en evidencia, el hecho de que gran parte de los antibióticos no son removidos eficientemente en las plantas de tratamiento de aguas residuales convencionales, siendo necesario la implementación de alternativas de tratamiento eficientes y de bajo costo. Se realizó la evaluación de la remoción del antibiótico florfenicol utilizando humedales horizontales piloto de flujo subsuperficial, con un tiempo de retención hidráulica de 4.2 d, plantados con macrófitas (Phragmites australis) y empleando concentraciones de 10, 15, 20 y 25 mg/L de florfenicol. Se concluyó que la remoción del antibiótico y de la DQO fue decreciente a lo largo del tiempo, con un porcentaje de remoción máximo de 77.9% de florfenicol y 85.2% de DQO durante los primeros días de exposición. Los resultados encontrados, permitieron demostrar que el florfenicol no quedó retenido en el material granular de los humedales, ni en las macrófitas y que el mecanismo de remoción predominante de remoción fue la degradación biológica.

Abstract

A dual-chambered microbial fuel cell with aqueous cathode was operated with domestic wastewater to investigate the electrogenic ability of anaerobic bacteria from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. Curves of cell potential vs. current density, power density vs. current density and current at a fixed load of 100 Ω, were obtained daily to monitor the electrochemical evolution of the system as a function of substrate use in several batch cycles. A maximum power density of 1.11 μWcm-2 was obtained after 65 days of continuous operation and a coulombic efficiency of 7% and a chemical oxygen demand removal of 76% were found in the last batch cycle. Anaerobic culture of the bacteria from the anode biofilm resulted in the isolation of two Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria with divergent sugar fermentation capabilities, while analysis of 16S rRNA gene fragments showed three clones from the phyla Firmicutes, δ-Proteobacteria and α- Proteobacteria. Scanning electron imaging analysis revealed an increase in cell diversity and proliferation of methanogenic archaea when changing from synthetic to real wastewater. These results reveal the influence of substrate concentration and presence of methanogenic microorganisms on the production of power in microbial fuel cells, suggesting that future developments could be a contribution for the use of this technology to decontaminate domestic wastewater in small communities. Resumen Una celda de combustible microbiana de doble cámara con cátodo inmerso en el agua fue operada con aguas residuales domésticas para investigar la capacidad electrogénica de las bacterias anaeróbicas de una planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales municipales. Se obtuvieron diariamente curvas de potencial de celda vs. densidad de corriente, densidad de potencia vs. densidad de corriente y corriente a una resistencia fija de 100 Ω para monitorear la evolución electroquímica del sistema en función del uso del sustrato en varios ciclos de lotes. Se obtuvo una densidad de potencia máxima de 1.11 µWcm-2 después de 65 días de operación continua, una eficiencia coulombic del 7% y una disminución de la Demanda de Oxígeno Químico del 76% en el último ciclo del lote. El cultivo anaeróbico de las bacterias de la biopelícula anódica dio como resultado el aislamiento de dos bacterias Gram-positivas y dos Gram-negativas con capacidades de fermentación de azúcar divergentes, mientras que el análisis de los fragmentos del gen 16S rRNA mostró tres clones de los filos Firmicutes, Prote-Proteobacteria y α -Proteobacterias. El análisis de las imágenes de microscopia electronica de barrido reveló un aumento en la diversidad celular y la proliferación de arqueas metanogénicas al cambiar de aguas residuales sintéticas a reales. Estos resultados revelan la influencia de la concentración de sustrato y la presencia de microorganismos metanogénicos en la producción de energía en la celda de combustible microbiana, lo que sugiere que los desarrollos futuros podrían ser una contribución para el uso de esta tecnología para descontaminar las aguas residuales domésticas en las comunidades rurales.

Abstract

Life cycle assessment (LCA) considers the whole life cycle of a product or process, from the origin of the raw materials up to the final disposition of the wastes. In this work, LCA methodology was applied in the evaluation of the environmental impact that is caused by the use of alumina nanoparticles as an additive in biodiesel/diesel blends, considering the synthesis of the alumina nanoparticles through sol-gel method. SIMAPRO software (CML method) was used to evaluate the potential impacts of each stage of the process. Although the use of the nanoparticles caused a reduction in the emissions of CO2, SO2 and particulate material (PM); an increase in most of the impact categories (acidification, eutrophication and marine eco-toxicity) was observed during combustion. This can be attributed to the increasing emissions of NOx and the toxic effect related to the synthesis of the nanoparticles, when compared to combustion without nano-additive. These results indicated that there is a need to carry further research on the use of nanoadditives in biofuels, to verify the renewability of these alternatives regarding the sustainability of the process El Análisis de Ciclo de Vida (ACV) de un producto o proceso considera toda su historia, desde su origen como materia prima hasta su final como residuo. En este trabajo, se empleó la metodología ACV para evaluar el impacto ambiental por el uso de nanopartículas de alúmina como aditivo de mezclas de biodiesel-diésel, considerando la síntesis de nanopartículas de alúmina a partir del método sol-gel. La evaluación de cada etapa del proceso se realizó mediante el software SIMAPRO (método CML), para la determinación del potencial de impactos de cada una de las fases en estudio. Aunque el uso de las nanopartículas generó una reducción de las emisiones de CO2, SO2 y material particulado (MP), se observó un incremento en la mayoría de las categorías de impacto (acidificación, eutrofización y eco-toxicidad acuática marina) durante la combustión, debido al aumento en las emisiones de NOx y el efecto tóxico de la fabricación de las nanopartículas, comparado con la combustión sin el nano-aditivo, lo cual plantea el interrogante sobre si el uso de nanotecnología integrada a la industria de biocombustibles representa una alternativa realmente renovable
