Results of a survey of failure mechanisms of wind turbine blades in India, observed by service companies, are presented. Surface erosion is the most often observed blade damage mechanism, followed by lightning strikes. Leading edge erosion can be observed even 1–2 years after wind turbine installation, while structural cracks are observed most often only 5–8 years after installation of the wind turbines. The most often emergency repair requests are connected with blade bolt replacement, followed by lightning strikes. Lightning strikes are registered relatively often, every 1–2 years, depending on climate. Lightning strikes are also most often observed in monsoon areas of India and are most common reason for the wind turbine downtimes.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE NO is a vasodilator and independent modulator of cardiac remodelling. Commonly, in cardiac disease (e.g., heart failure), endothelial dysfunction (synonymous with NO deficiency) has been implicated in increased BP, cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Currently, no effective therapies replacing NO have succeeded in the clinic. Inorganic nitrate (NO3- ), through chemical reduction to nitrite and then to NO, exerts potent BP lowering, but whether it might be useful in treating undesirable cardiac remodelling is not known. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH We analysed demographics in a nested age- and sex-matched case-control study of hypertensive patients with or without left ventricular hypertrophy (NCT03088514) and assessed the effects of dietary nitrate in mouse models of cardiac dysfunction. KEY RESULTS Lower plasma nitrite concentrations and vascular dysfunction accompanied cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis in patients. In mouse models of cardiac remodelling, restoration of circulating nitrite levels using dietary nitrate improved endothelial dysfunction through targeting the xanthine oxidoreductase-driven increase in levels of H2 O2 and superoxide, and decreased cardiac fibrosis through NO-mediated block of SMAD phosphorylation leading to improvements in cardiac structure and function. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Dietary nitrate offers easily translatable therapeutic options for delivery of NO and thereby treatment of cardiac dysfunction.

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) have recently emerged as light-harvesting devices, as well as elegant heterogeneous catalysts. The combination of these two properties into a dual catalyst has not yet been explored. We report a new photosensitive triazine-based COF, decorated with single Ni sites to form a dual catalyst. This crystalline and highly porous catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance in the visible-light-driven catalytic sulfur-carbon cross-coupling reaction. Incorporation of single transition metal sites in a photosensitive COF scaffold with two-component synergistic catalyst in organic transformation is demonstrated for the first time.

BACKGROUND Treatment of critical-sized bone defects has progressively evolved over the years from metallic implants to more ingenious three-dimensional-based scaffolds. The use of three-dimensional scaffolds for bone regeneration from biodegradable polymers like poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is gaining popularity. Scaffolds with surface functionalization using gelatin (Gel) have the advantages of biocompatibility and cell adhesion. Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) is one of the most promising implant materials utilized in orthopaedics. The osteogenic potential of the nHAp can be improved by the substitution of magnesium (Mg) ions onto the crystal lattice of nHAp. Thus, the goal of this work was to make three-dimensional-PLA scaffolds covered with Gel/Mg-nHAp for osteogenic effect. METHODS AND RESULTS The designed three-dimensional-PLA/Gel/Mg-nHAp scaffolds were attributed to various characterizations for the examination of their physicochemical, mechanical properties, cyto-compatibility, and biodegradability as well as their ability to promote osteogenesis in vitro. Mouse mesenchymal stem cells (mMSCs) were cytocompatible with these scaffolds. The osteogenic potential of three-dimensional-PLA/Gel/Mg-nHAp scaffolds employing mMSCs was validated at the cellular and molecular levels. The three-dimensional-PLA/Gel/Mg-nHAp scaffolds stimulated the differentiation of mMSCs towards osteoblastic lineage. CONCLUSION Based on these findings, we suggest that the three-dimensional-PLA/Gel/Mg-nHAp scaffolds' osteogenic capability may be advantageous in the mending of bone defects in orthopedic applications.

In order to bring out the nature of the factors influencing lake water composition, multivariate statistical analysis and trend analysis were performed based on the hydrochemical data of the study area, namely, South Chennai. Change in land use pattern and settlements along the banks of the lakes alters the quality and quantity of the surface water. In the present study, the R-mode factor analysis and cluster analysis were applied to the geochemical parameters of the water to identify the factors affecting the chemical composition of the lake water. Dendograms of both the seasons give three major clusters, reflecting the groups of unpolluted to moderately polluted, polluted, and heavily polluted stations. The movement of stations from one cluster to another clearly brings out the seasonal variation in the chemical composition of the lake water. The complex hydrochemical data of the surface water were interpreted by condensing them into three major factors. Factor score analysis was used successfully to delineate the stations under study and the role of the contributing factors, and the nature of factors responsible for the variation in chemical composition of the water has been clearly brought out. Results of trend analysis using ArcGIS clearly indicate that the trend in water quality is deteriorating at a faster rate in the eastern part of the study area. It is understood that although natural shifts probably can account for some of the variation, it is most likely that human activities play a major role in affecting the water quality on a regional scale. Use of sequencing approaches is an important aspect in the field of cancer genomics, where next-generation sequencing has already been utilized for targeting oncogenes or tumour-suppressor genes, that can be sequenced in a short time period. Alterations such as point mutations, insertions/deletions, copy number alterations, chromosomal rearrangements and epigenetic changes are encountered in cancer cell genomes, and application of various NGS technologies in cancer research will encounter such modifications. Rapid advancement in technology has led to exponential growth in the field of genomic analysis. The $1000 Genome Project (in which the goal is to sequence an entire human genome for $1000), and deep sequencing techniques (which have greater accuracy and provide a more complete analysis of the genome), are examples of rapid advancements in the field of cancer genomics. In this mini review, we explore sequencing techniques, correlating their importance in cancer therapy and treatment.

The cyclization of the derivatives of 3-aminotriazole, 2-(5-substituted 4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylamino)-1-arylethanones and 2-(4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ylthio)-1-arylethanones to yield 6-aryl-4H-imidazo[1,2-b][1,2,4]triazoles and 6-aryl-thiazolo[3,2-b][1,2,4]triazoles has been described.

A capillary switch is a system of two liquid drops, one sessile and the other pendant, obtained by overfilling a hole of radius R in a plate. When surface tension dominates gravity, the equilibrium shapes of the drops are spherical sections of equal radii. If the combined volume of the top VT and bottom VB drops exceeds 4πR3/3, the system has three equilibrium states of which two are stable. This bistability is exploited in applications by toggling the system between its two stable states. Here, we examine the effectiveness of using an electric field for toggling. Bifurcation diagrams are obtained that depict how the system's response varies with applied field strength E, and show loss of stability at turning points and the possibility of hysteresis. A phase diagram in E−(VT+VB) space is presented to readily infer when an electric field is an effective means for toggling. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 60: 1451–1459, 2014
