Two new models have been recently introduced for studying the remaining rotational ambiguity in the bilinear decomposition of matrix data. One of the models is N‐BANDS, which yields two extreme profiles per sample component, corresponding to maximum or minimum signal contribution function or relative component area under its concentration profile. It is highly useful for computing the relative root mean square error due to rotational ambiguity in estimated analyte concentrations (RMSERA), which numerically quantifies the impact of the phenomenon in terms of prediction uncertainty. Since N‐BANDS successfully consider the presence of instrumental noise in the data, it is extremely useful for the analysis of real data sets. The other model is SW‐N‐BANDS, which is similar to N‐BANDS, but is applied in a sensor wise manner, that is, computing the maximum and minimum intensity value at each sensor. It provides the boundaries of the full set of feasible profiles, and helps to better understand the behavior of a given component under the application of several constraints. Both models are described in light of both simulations and experimental data, illustrating their main characteristics of importance to analytical chemistry studies. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, we explore students' engagement with critical feedback in an authentic university setting. Findings support the centrality of strong relationships in the feedback process. Study 1 was the first conceptual replication and extension of Yeager et al.'s (2014) wise feedback intervention to test the effectiveness/efficacy in a new setting. Undergraduate students (n = 94) were randomly assigned to receive a wise feedback message (explicitly stated the instructor's high expectations and belief in the student's ability to meet those expectations) or a control message. Although we did not replicate prior findings, we observed high initial levels of institutional and relational trust, which was maintained across the semester for students in both conditions. In Study 2, we conducted interviews with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) students (n = 6), to explore the underlying assumptions of wise feedback (i.e., attributional ambiguity) and their experiences with critical feedback in higher education. Although these discussions were nuanced, and will be unpacked further, generally students highlighted the role of feedback in bolstering or deteriorating their relationships with instructors. These findings have implications for educators who are tasked with providing critical feedback while simultaneously protecting relational dynamics with students. Practitioner points: Undergraduate students who received wise feedback did not report statistically significant changes in school or relational trust. These findings stand in contrast to earlier research conducted with middle school students. Because older students have more experience with feedback throughout their academic career (for better or worse), it is possible that a more intensive intervention may be necessary to help overcome their pre‐existing expectations.Instructional decisions such as planning for students to have opportunities to meaningfully engage with feedback (through time in class or encouraging resubmissions) may contribute to students' development of feedback literacy and comfort/confidence actively participating in the feedback process.Not only do educators need to provide students with high‐quality feedback comments (e.g., specific, timely, action‐oriented), they should also consider how the broader learning environment, including student–teacher relationships, facilitate or discourage feedback interactions. This article proposes two robust Kalman filters to solve the issue of inaccurate modeling in multiplicative noise systems due to epistemic limitations. First, we construct all conceivable state/measurement transition probability densities as an ambiguity set. This ambiguity set chooses the Wasserstein distance or the moment‐based metric as the distance metric. Besides, this set is an inequality set with a chosen tolerance, which can be seen as a non‐negative radius ball. Then, by combining the robust solution of the least favorable model in that ball with the alternating direction method of multipliers or an efficient direct solution method, we propose two robust Kalman filters based on the minimum mean square error criterion. In recent times, MapReduce has become a popular tool for handling big data. At the same time, uncertainty is related to arbitrariness, fuzziness, ambiguity, irregularity and incomplete knowledge. In RS theory, the uncertainty behaviour of the data in the dataset of interest is managed by using upper and lower approximate sets and classification accuracy. The RS model is integrated with data clustering technique for optimal outcomes. With this motivation, this study designs an Optimal Clustering with RS‐Based Rule Generation Model (OC‐RSRGM) for data classification on MapReduce environment. The OC‐RSRGM technique aims to generate an optimal set of rules using RST for the data classification process and it involves a two‐stage process namely Optimal Fuzzy c‐Means Clustering (OFCM) and RSRGM‐based rule generation with classification. The OFCM technique is derived to eradicate the local optimal problem of the FCM (Fuzzy c‐Means) model using Barnacles Mating Optimizer (BMO). It provides the decision‐makers with all the information needed to design appropriate mechanisms to support their decision‐making activities. The Hadoop MapReduce tool is used to handle big data. The proposed method combines an FCM, BMO, RS theory to accomplish effective decision‐making. The OC‐RSRGM technique can be employed to continuous value dataset where data point does not offer any class details and it might be uncertain. To validate the performance of OC‐RSRGM technique, a detailed experimental analysis is carried out to highlights the betterment of OC‐RSRGM technique. Artists based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are pressured by international art elites to critique the illiberal regime under which they live. But doing so is illegal. It can lead the state to retaliate with harassment, detention, cancellation of residency visas, and expulsion. Nonetheless, gatekeeping curators and critics validate UAE‐based artists' work as worthwhile and good if these artists critique the UAE state. How do these artists balance the perils of retaliation and deportation with an exhortation to critique the state for the sake of career success and international visibility? They do so by deploying a form of critique predicated on omission and ambiguity; I term it conspicuous omission. The main aim of this chapter is to analyse under‐determination, generalisation, vagueness, and ambiguity in the speaker's self‐reference strategies used in Catalan parliamentary debate and Twitter. Parliaments are one of the main arenas where politicians develop their activity. On the other hand, Twitter allows politicians to build their own public image and to be in touch with voters, and citizens in general, in a more direct way. The theoretical background of the analysis includes the classical studies on deixis and on person deixis in Catalan; Goffman (1981)'s participation frameworks; functional linguistics and the ethnography of communication, and Twitter communication analysis. In this corpus‐driven analysis, parliamentary discourses and tweets of two members of the Parliament of Catalonia are analysed. This article gives an explanation of how recent results on ambiguity logics are relevant to the linguistic and philosophical theory of ambiguity. To this aim, some fundamental definitions and results are explained. We formulate and provide evidence for three main hypotheses: Firstly, ambiguity is not a vague notion. Secondly, in (explicit) reasoning with ambiguity, we always have to consider the parameter ±trust. Thirdly, ambiguous propositions exist, but they cannot have the same rights and properties as unambiguous propositions; rather they should be considered "second class". [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ambiguity is conventionally defined in Linguistics as a property of a word or an utterance that has two meanings or two interpretations, and is usually classified as lexical, morphological, syntactic (or structural), and pragmatic. Giving an adequate definition of linguistic ambiguity is not trivial, nor is there unanimity in accepting it. Most researchers tend to agree that ambiguity should be distinguished from related concepts such as vagueness, context sensitivity, reference transfer, and underdetermination or generality of meaning. The distinction between these concepts is also related to the divergences or connections between the perspectives of analysis of ambiguity, and the aim of each work. In this introduction, we define the limits of ambiguity with respect to related concepts and summarize the studies contained within this special issue. These studies do not cover all possible approaches to linguistic ambiguity, but provide a broad overview that can be useful in different fields. This exploratory study aims to offer new insights into the lexical ambiguity in the interlanguage arising from the use of false cognates. The study is based on written texts from two learners' corpora. Utterances including false cognates were retrieved from both corpora and presented to two groups of native speakers who assessed their correctness and stated whether or not they were ambiguous. While the first group was informed beforehand that the sentences had been produced by non‐native speakers (as well as the meaning of the false cognates in their L1), the second group had no information regarding the speakers who wrote them. The goal of this analysis is to shed light on the different perceptions that can arise from native vs. non‐native speakers' productions, focusing on lexical ambiguity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article investigates what structural ambiguity reveals about the architecture of language. It analyzes two basic types of structural ambiguity, constituent ambiguity and chain formation ambiguity, and illustrates with a small class of selected case studies how they interweave. It observes that several movement locality constraints have the effect of reducing chain formation ambiguities; however, it argues that movement locality constraints are not primarily motivated to reduce ambiguity. The goal of this work is to put forward a pragmatic and translational framework for analysing target texts (TT) and source texts (ST) containing conversational implicatures that lead to pragmatic ambiguity. Ambiguity, sensu lato, is deemed to be related to indeterminacy and vagueness. Nevertheless, in the strict sense, ambiguity is understood as 'more than a single processing instruction for a given utterance'. More specifically, pragmatic ambiguity arises whenever differences in cultural conventions between SL speakers and TL speakers lead to differences in the existence, meaning and salience of implicatures among ST and TT. Using real translation cases selected from a purpose‐built corpus containing fiction written and oral texts, we show which pragmatic ambiguities translators come across, and how translation techniques are used, either to maintain ambiguity or to select one intended processing instruction. Political discourse has been characterised as being 'vague' and 'ambiguous'. It is argued that politicians tend to use generic and unspecific words in order to avoid explicit commitment (McGee 2018). Although this situation may describe discourse genres such as political interviews and election debates, it is unclear that it can be applied to parliamentary debate. This study analyses a corpus consisting of two parliamentary debates in English and Catalan with respect to ambiguity, vagueness and generality in connection to referential cohesion. Three variables are qualitatively and quantitatively analysed: a) the abstractness of the topics, b) the non‐specific or specific nature of these entities, and c) the grammatical or lexical nature of the units that maintain referential cohesion. The results show that ambiguity and vagueness are rather infrequent in parliamentary debate. However, the high frequencies of non‐concrete referential entities, and of non‐specific referents characterise parliamentary debate as a general discourse. As a counterpart, lexical cohesion devices as repetition and encapsulation highlight the topics under discussion, what leads to avoid ambiguity and vagueness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regular polysemes are sets of ambiguous words that all share the same relationship between their meanings, such as CHICKEN and LOBSTER both referring to an animal or its meat. To probe how a distributional semantic model, here exemplified by bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT), represents regular polysemy, we analyzed whether its embeddings support answering sense analogy questions similar to "is the mapping between CHICKEN (as an animal) and CHICKEN (as a meat) similar to that which maps between LOBSTER (as an animal) to LOBSTER (as a meat)?" We did so using the LRcos model, which combines a logistic regression classifier of different categories (e.g., animal vs. meat) with a measure of cosine similarity. We found that (a) the model was sensitive to the shared structure within a given regular relationship; (b) the shared structure varies across different regular relationships (e.g., animal/meat vs. location/organization), potentially reflective of a "regularity continuum;" (c) some high‐order latent structure is shared across different regular relationships, suggestive of a similar latent structure across different types of relationships; and (d) there is a lack of evidence for the aforementioned effects being explained by meaning overlap. Lastly, we found that both components of the LRcos model made important contributions to accurate responding and that a variation of this method could yield an accuracy boost of 10% in answering sense analogy questions. These findings enrich previous theoretical work on regular polysemy with a computationally explicit theory and methods, and provide evidence for an important organizational principle for the mental lexicon and the broader conceptual knowledge system. The two primary physical methods for identifying lithium titanate, a negative electrode material used commercially, are X-Ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Although there are many publications on this topic, they are focused mainly on chemistry, so there are still some points that require clarification from a physical and methodological point of view. Difference of experimentally observed and theoretically predicted Raman spectra was explained through a combination of experiments and computations. The work comprises experiments and computations to explain why there are different numbers of predicted and observed Raman-active bands. Our low-temperature study and the analysis of thermal shifts during heating led us to conclude that the approach with surplus bands is advantageous and we recommend using major F2g band shifts to estimate the sample heating. Scomberomorus guttatus has been subjected to a series of synonym assignations over the years. Its taxonomy has been mired with ambiguities due to the greater‐than‐average morphological variations observed in samples from different regions. An integrated taxonomic revision with molecular support indicated that the species that was thought to be a single entity, in reality, is a complex of three distinct species. They are morphologically distinct with respect to the body depth and elongation, cephalic morphometry, and meristic characteristics. Otolith morphometry and phylogenetic evidence further established the taxonomic divergence within the spotted seerfish complex. The phylogenetic characteristic as indicated by the mitochondrial Cytochrome c Oxidase subunit I (COI) sequence unveiled that S. guttatus had a high intraspecific divergence of 11.1% from its two identical congeners and a divergence of 2.34% between the congeners, indicating scope for categorizing them as separate species. Based on the morphological and molecular evidence, S. guttatus is redescribed; the senior synonym Scomberomorus leopardus is resurrected as a valid species; and a new species Scomberomorus avirostrus n. sp. is described with keys for species distinction. ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2015 is one of the most fundamental systems engineering international standards. In this work, the major system lifecycle processes specified in 15288 and, equally importantly, the objects interacting through them, are modeled meticulously using OPM ISO 19450. The conceptual model, based on this standard's text, reflects the implied authors' intent, bringing up ambiguities that arise from the informality of natural language text and reference to related figures. The resulting OPM model is an exact, formal, and detailed expression of the processes and related objects in the first part of 15288, making it machine interpretable. The gaps discovered during the modeling process are testimony to the value of the model‐based standards authoring approach and the centrality of a formal yet humanly accessible model as the underlying backbone of international standards and key technical documents in general. This paper defends the claim that if a person P exists, there can be true positive comparisons between P's existence and P's never having existed at all in terms of what is better or worse for P. If correct, this view will have significant implications for various fundamental issues in population ethics. I try to show how arguments to the contrary fail to take note of a general ambiguity in comparisons when compared alternatives contain their own different standards (or, in the case of non‐existence, a lack thereof) on which to base these comparisons. After having answered arguments against the possibility of making positive comparisons, the paper develops a positive account of how to make existence/non‐existence comparisons in terms of personal value whilst accepting that a person's non‐existence fails to make any contact with the relevant categories of personal value. The guiding idea is the following: When some item satisfies some relevant standard, we can, I argue, infer that it satisfies this standard better than something that fails to satisfy this standard (be this failure due to empirical or conceptual reasons). For the integration detection of near space hypersonic weak targets by high pulse repetition frequency (PRF) radar, a novel method named Multi‐Hypothesis Fuzzy‐Matching Radon transform (MHFM‐RT) is proposed for the near space hypersonic target detection and tracking. For remote hypersonic target detection, to avoid range ambiguity, current radars always use a low PRF mode, which limit the number of pulse accumulations. Using the high PRF mode, the fuzzy folding will appear in the target range measurements when target trajectory crosses range fuzzy intervals. Therefore, there is a contradiction between range ambiguity and energy accumulation. The proposed method is used to match the fuzzy measurements, so as to realise the correct integration in the condition of range ambiguity. Firstly, considering the need of range ambiguity resolution, the mode of staggered PRF is used. Secondly, the first frame measurements are periodically extended for multiple‐fuzzy hypothesis. Finally, the weak target track is accumulated in MHFM‐RT domain, and the signal integration and ambiguity resolution can be realised simultaneously. The proposed method expands the Variable‐Diameter‐Arc‐Helix Radon transform (VDAH‐RT) method to fuzzy folding conditions. Compared with the existing methods, for 7‐scan measurements non‐coherent integration, the detection sensitivity of the proposed method is about 0.5–1 dB higher than that of the IMM hybrid filter algorithm, and about 1 dB higher than that of the RHT‐TBD approach, and it needs less storage space and has higher detection probability. This article articulates and defends a dissolution of the so‐called repugnant conclusion, which focuses on the notion of life worth living figuring both in Parfit's formulation of the repugnant conclusion and in most responses to such a conclusion. The proposed dissolution demonstrates that the notion of life worth living is plagued by multiple ambiguities and that these ambiguities, in turn, hamper meaningful debate about both the issue of whether the repugnant conclusion can be avoided and the issue of whether the repugnant conclusion is actually repugnant. This result does not exclude that some modified versions of the repugnant conclusion may yield valuable insights about the value of populations and the tenability of different axiological/ethical theories. Still, if the proposed dissolution is correct, then the repugnant conclusion rests on an ill‐defined notion and we lack the information required to assess the merits of the repugnant conclusion. Objective: Investigating what contributes to perceptions of ambiguity in stepfamily relationships among adolescents, and which strategies adolescents use to deal with ambiguity. Background: Relational losses or acquisitions marked by ambiguity (i.e., ambiguous losses and gains) are taxing as they often evade resolution. The frequent assumption that family relationships in postdivorce stepfamilies are per se ambiguous has only received limited empirical foundation. Little is known about how adolescents experience ambiguity, how and why ambiguity emerges, and what strategies adolescents develop to deal with ambiguity. Method: Semi‐structured interviews with 30 Dutch adolescents (aged 16–20) living in diverse postdivorce stepfamilies were conducted. The data were analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding. Results: Relationships with stepparents, stepsiblings, and biological parents were especially likely to be experienced as ambiguous. Two key categories of reasons emerged that helped to explain the emergence of ambiguity: information (i.e., incomplete or contradictory knowledge about family relationships), and relationality (i.e., the ways in which family relationships were assessed and compared to each other). Results point towards potential chains of ambiguity in stepfamilies, and show that respondents compared their relations with constructed archetypes of stepparents. Respondents used three strategies to deal with ambiguity: (a) improving relationships, (b) accepting ambiguity, and (c) creating distance. Conclusion: Ambiguity was common in postdivorce stepfamilies, yet mostly confined to relationships between adolescents and stepparents, stepsiblings, and biological parents. This suggests that, in stepfamilies, ambiguous gain might occur more frequently than ambiguous loss. The negative feelings associated with ambiguity might explain why many adolescents perceive living in stepfamilies as burdensome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spontaneous eye blinks are modulated around perceptual events. Our previous study, using a visual ambiguous stimulus, indicated that blink probability decreases before a reported perceptual switch. In the current study, we tested our hypothesis that an absence of blinks marks a time in which perceptual switches are facilitated in‐ and outside the visual domain. In three experiments, presenting either a visual motion quartet in light or darkness or a bistable auditory streaming stimulus, we found a co‐occurrence of blink rate reduction with increased perceptual switch probability. In the visual domain, perceptual switches induced by a short interruption of visual input (blank) allowed an estimate of the timing of the perceptual event with respect to the motor response. This provided the first evidence that the blink reduction was not a consequence of the perceptual switch. Importantly, by showing that the time between switches and the previous blink was significantly longer than the inter‐blink interval, our studies allowed to conclude that perceptual switches did not happen at random but followed a prolonged period of nonblinking. Correspondingly, blink rate and switch rate showed an inverse relationship. Our study supports the idea that the absence or presence of blinks maps perceptual processes independent of the sensory modality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Uncertainty has long been of interest to economists and psychologists and has more recently gained attention among ecologists. In the ecological world, animals must regularly make decisions related to finding resources and avoiding threats. Here, we describe uncertainty as a perceptual phenomenon of decision‐makers, and we focus specifically on the functional ecology of such uncertainty regarding predation risk. Like all uncertainty, uncertainty about predation risk reflects informational limitations. When cues are available, they may be novel (i.e. unknown information), incomplete, unreliable, overly abundant and complex, or conflicting. We review recent studies that have used these informational limitations to induce uncertainty of predation risk. These studies have typically used either over‐responses to novelty (i.e. neophobia) or memory attenuation as proxies for measuring uncertainty. Because changes in the environment, particularly unpredictable changes, drive informational limitations, we describe studies assessing unpredictable variance in spatio‐temporal predation risk, intensity of predation risk, predator encounter rate, and predator diversity. We also highlight anthropogenic changes within habitats that are likely to have dramatic impacts on information availability and thus uncertainty in antipredator decisions in the modern world. Given the disruptions the COVID‐19 pandemic has engendered in people's professional lives, the importance and contribution of certain workforces has been under particular scrutiny. In England, the teaching profession has been under particularly close public scrutiny, with concerns that teachers' perceived social appreciation may have decreased throughout the pandemic. Thus, the current study examined the trajectory of teachers' perceptions of how much society, policymakers and the media had valued the teaching profession throughout this time. With an initial sample of 24 primary and secondary teachers in mainstream state schools in England, 54 online interviews took place at three time points: when school buildings were partially reopened for the first time (June 2020), when they were partially closed for the second time (February 2021) and when they were fully reopened for 16 months (July 2022). Three themes were identified in the data using a longitudinal trajectory analysis based on reflexive thematic analysis: 'initial admiration from local communities progressively waned', 'continuous government disrespect towards teachers' and 'initial media vitriol towards teachers was sustained'. Implications for how teachers and other stakeholders in education can most effectively work together for the benefit of the health and effectiveness of the teaching profession and the educational system are considered in the context of the associated risks when teachers have low levels of perceived social appreciation. In this paper, we explore how borders and associated processes – spatial othering and ordering – are reproduced, resisted and undermined temporally. To do so, we investigate ethnographically how 'welcomers' from volunteer pro‐refugee initiatives in Paris become involved in the chronopolitics of b/ordering. Our empirical analysis builds on the practice turn in border studies and on Sharma's chronography of power, which focuses on the relational dimension of temporal politics. We detail three temporal practices of Parisian welcome cultures: temporal translation, temporal creation and the elaboration of sub‐architectures of temporal maintenance. In detailing these practices ethnographically, we highlight the ambiguity of welcomers' role in the chronopolitics of b/ordering: aligning with and recalibrating refugees' bodies to the rhythmic and temporal logics of b/ordering as well as undermining the violence, binarity and rigidified identities underpinning b/ordering timelines. We present relative astrometric and photometric measurements of visual double stars made in 2013–2015, with PISCO2 installed at the 76‐cm refractor of Côte d'Azur Observatory in Nice (France). Our observing list contains orbital couples as well as double stars whose motion is still uncertain. Most of the observations were done in 2015, but some other observations of wide couples were done in 2013–2014 (0.3% of the total of the observations). Three different techniques were used for obtaining measurements: lucky imaging, speckle interferometry and the direct vector autocorrelation method. From our observations of 2837 multiple stars, we obtained 5182 new measurements with angular separations in the range of 0″$$ {}^{{\prime\prime} } $$.1–32″$$ {}^{{\prime\prime} } $$ and an average accuracy of 0″.018$$ {0}^{{\prime\prime} }.018 $$. The mean error on the position angles is 0°.8. Most of the position angles were determined without the usual 180° ambiguity with the application of the direct vector autocorrelation technique and/or by inspection of the Lucky images or the long integration files. We managed to routinely monitor faint systems (mV≈9−11$$ {m}_V\approx 9-11 $$) with large magnitude difference (up to ΔmV≈4.5$$ \Delta {m}_V\approx 4.5 $$). We have thus been able to measure 21 systems containing red dwarf stars that had been poorly monitored since their discovery, from which we estimated the stellar masses thanks to Gaia measurements. We also measured the magnitude difference of the two components of 1079 double stars with an estimated error of 0.2 mag. Except for a few objects that are discussed, our measurements are in good agreement with the ephemerides computed with published orbital elements, even for the double stars whose separation is smaller than the diffraction limit. Thanks to good seeing images and with the use of high‐contrast numerical filters, we have also been able to obtain 196 measurements with an angular separation smaller than the diffraction limit of our instrumentation, and consistent with those obtained with larger telescopes. We also report measurements of the 164 new double stars that we found in the files obtained during the observations. Probabilistic characterisation of image data for accurate prognosis and treatment planning remains a long‐standing problem in medical research, especially when the data distribution depicts flat‐top and high‐order contact. Such flat‐top distributions are quite common in brain magnetic resonance (MR) image data, where the density drops sharply beyond the flat interval. Intuitively, it would indicate a bipartition of data into positive region containing observations definitely belonging to the image class and boundary region with observations possibly belonging to it. The flat peak would also imply that multiple values are equally most likely to belong to that class. However, the popular probability distributions used in such cases are unimodal, creating ambiguity about the positive region. In this work, we study the statistical properties and develop likelihood‐based iterative estimation method for the parameters of a novel class of platykurtic probability distributions containing normal, called the stomped normal distribution, that provides more accurate modelling to the flat‐top data distributions. The robustness of the proposed stomped normal model has been illustrated with six simulated and nine real brain MR volumes. The transmit waveform with ambiguity function specifications in the range‐Doppler plane has been of great interest in traditional single antenna radar systems in recent years. This paper considers the design of waveform sets with a desired slow‐time ambiguity function for multiple‐input multiple‐output radar. Specifically, it is desirable that the ambiguity function has low sidelobes where clutter occurs, as this reduces the impact of the clutter on target detection. Instead of unimodular waveforms, the authors consider amplitude modulation signals and introduce the bound constraint on signal amplitudes into the optimisation for the consideration of transmitter efficiency. The design problem is formulated as minimising the weighted integrated sidelobes level of the ambiguity function over the range‐Doppler plane under bound constraints. The resulting problem has a highly non‐linear objective function and is constrained by bound constraints and quadratic equality (constant energy) constraints, making it difficult to solve. The authors develop an efficient algorithm based on the sequential quadratic programming technique and non‐linear conjugate gradient method to solve it. The objective of this work is to investigate the Ambiguity Function (AF) characterization of the Iridium L‐band downlink burst transmissions under single burst and multiband multi‐burst mode to demonstrate its suitability and capability as Signal of OPportunity (SoOP) for navigation. The Iridium bursts are collected and examined by demodulating without any prior knowledge for frame verification. The comprehensive analysis and theoretical model of the two mode AFs are presented and verified to evaluate the waveform properties with resolution and sidelobes in both the Doppler and delay domains. Degradation in AF resulting from signal model and multiband channel combination is characterized to exploit the trade‐offs for selection and utilization of the Iridium burst. It has been found that the single burst even with maximum length of 20.32 ms appears available but far from excellent for navigation, while the multiband mode produces significant improvements over the time delay and Doppler resolution as well as a certain degradation on the AF sidelobes. Lexical ambiguity is pervasive in language, and the nature of the representations of an ambiguous word's multiple meanings is yet to be fully understood. With a special focus on Chinese characters, the present study first established that native speaker's perception about a character's number of meanings was heavily influenced by the availability of its distinct word formations, while whether these meanings would be perceived to be closely related was driven by further conceptual analysis. These notions were operationalized as two computed metrics, which assessed the degree of dispersion across individual word formations and the degree of propinquity across clusters of word formations, respectively, in a distributional semantic space. The observed correlations between the computed and the perceived metrics indicated that the utility of word formations to tap into meaning representations of Chinese characters was indeed cognitively plausible. The results have demonstrated the extent to which distributional semantics could inform about meaning representations of Chinese characters, which has theoretical implications for the representation of ambiguous words more generally. Digital technology has long provided new ways of initiating romantic relationships as people communicate through text messages, social media, and dating applications. Emojis have been widely adopted as a means of conveying nonverbal cues in digital communication. However, what role do platform‐provided social cues, such as emojis, play in fostering or impeding clear communication and shared romantic expectations from a flirtatious text message conversation? In this study, 713 college students were randomly assigned to read a Snapchat conversation with or without emojis and, they were subsequently asked to infer the characters' thoughts and feelings, clarity of the characters' intentions, and indicate their own discomfort with receiving a similar Snapchat message. The results showed that emojis increase the clarity of the main character's intentions. Moreover, the participants' cognitive efforts, the extent to which they were emotionally affected by the conversation, and the presence of emojis reduced comfort level with receiving a similar Snapchat message. These findings suggest that emojis provide clarity to romantic conversations, which can amplify the interpersonal discomfort of receiving text‐based sexual overtures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Species delimitation is a contentious topic. The genomics revolution initially brought hope that identifying and classifying species would be easier through better methods and more data, but genomics has also brought complexity and controversy to delimitation. One solution can be to collect a larger sample of individuals at a finer geographic scale. But what if taxa are rare and collecting more samples is difficult or detrimental to the organisms at hand? In this issue of Molecular Ecology Resources, Opatova et al. (2023) tackle the ambiguity of species delimitation in rare and endangered trapdoor spiders (genus Cyclocosmia). The authors propose a framework for delimiting species when samples are hard to come by, such as in these rare and cryptic spiders. The authors combine extensive genomic sampling with statistical approaches that consider both the genetic distinctiveness of each population of spiders and how much gene flow occurs between these populations. Their proposed taxonomy balances two opposing signals, structure and gene flow, to count eight lineages of Cyclocosmia, and to point the way for future taxonomic studies of the rare or difficult to obtain. The nomenclatures used to describe HLA and killer‐cell immunoglobulin‐like receptor (KIR) alleles distinguish unique nucleotide and peptide sequences, and patterns of expression, but are insufficient for describing genotyping results, as description of ambiguities and relations across loci require terminology beyond allele names. The genotype list (GL) String grammar describes genotyping results for genetic systems with defined nomenclatures, like HLA and KIR, documenting what is known and unknown about a given genotyping result. However, the accuracy of a GL String is dependent on the reference database version under which it was generated. Here, we describe the GL string code (GLSC) system, which associates each GL String with meta‐data describing the specific reference context in which the GL String was created, and in which it should be interpreted. GLSC is a defined syntax for exchanging GL Strings in the context of a specific gene‐family namespace, allele‐name code‐system, and pertinent reference database version. GLSC allows HLA and KIR genotyping data to be transmitted, parsed and interpreted in the appropriate context, in an unambiguous manner, on modern data‐systems, including Health Level 7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource systems. Who knows the underlying productivity distribution function? Interestingly, this ambiguous function is often referenced to make decisions including job creations, wage determinations, contract formulations, etc. To investigate how ambiguity shapes labor markets, we integrate ambiguity preferences into the Diamond‐Mortensen‐Pissarides (DMP) model. We find that ambiguity‐averse job‐ and talent‐hunters are conservative. Our quantitative analysis indicates that but for the ambiguity, the American unemployment rate would have increased in the postwar era. Although statistical learning (SL) has been studied extensively in developmental dyslexia (DD), less attention has been paid to other fundamental challenges in language acquisition, such as cross‐situational word learning. Such investigation is important for determining whether and how SL processes are affected in DD at the word level. In this study, typically developed (TD) adults and young adults with DD were exposed to a set of trials that contained multiple spoken words and multiple pictures of individual objects, with no information about word‐referent correspondences provided within a trial. Nonetheless, cross‐trial statistical relations could be exploited to learn word‐referent mappings. The degree of within‐trial reference uncertainty and the novelty of to‐be‐learned objects (novel or familiar) were varied under different learning conditions. The results show that across all conditions, young adults with DD were significantly impaired in their ability to exploit cross‐trial regularities in co‐occurring visual–auditory streams to discover word‐referent mappings. Observed impairments were most pronounced when within‐trial reference uncertainty was the highest. Subjective measures of knowledge awareness revealed greater development of implicit but not explicit knowledge in the TD group than in the DD group. Together, these findings suggest that the SL deficit in DD affects fundamental language learning challenges at the word level and points to greater reliance on explicit processes due to impaired implicit associative learning among individuals with DD. Recent experimental studies have claimed to find evidence for the view that natural kind terms such as "water" are ambiguous: that they have two extensions, one determined by superficial properties, the other by underlying essence. In an online experiment, we presented to 600 participants scenarios describing discoveries of novel samples that differ in deep structure from samples of a familiar kind but are superficially identical, such as a water‐like substance that is not composed of H2O. We used three different types of question sets to probe whether the participants considered the sample as a member of the kind or not. Our results did not confirm the predictions of the ambiguity view. They were, rather, consistent with views that take underlying essences to be the sole criterion for membership in a natural kind. Li interprets her results as supporting an epistemic‐perspective reading of the variability in referential intuitions on proper names. A high‐resolution seismic reflection transect was acquired over a hard‐rock geological setting along an existing roadway in the Larder Lake area of the Superior Craton of Canada for the Metal Earth project in 2017. This profile, as well as other Metal earth transects, primarily aims to enhance the knowledge and to better understand the subsurface geology of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt within the Canadian Shield. The complex geological settings of the study area as well as the tribulations caused by the survey geometry have made the imaging and velocity field estimation more challenging. A recently introduced 2.5D multifocusing stacking method is one potential solution for processing crooked‐line seismic data with a poor signal‐to‐noise ratio. The 2.5D multifocusing approach offers more realistic modelling of the zero‐offset wavefield by explicitly accounting for the midpoint dispersion and cross‐dip effects. The main practical problem of the 2.5D multifocusing implementation is the simultaneous determination of the optimal wavefield parameters for each image point and time location. We address this optimization problem using a multidimensional constrained differential evolution global optimization algorithm, as this improves the efficiency and accuracy of the estimation. We have also designed an efficient processing sequence for multifocusing seismic imaging. The performance of the 2.5D multifocusing procedure has been examined on a synthetic model, generated using the same real acquisition geometry. Numerical tests demonstrate that the 2.5D multifocusing technique can produce a more focused stack with the primary reflections appearing at their poststack correct locations, and the procedure can also provide reliable estimates of interface dips. Due to the importance and difficulty of imaging the data, several conventional and advanced processing strategies have been attempted on the transect, specifically: 2D phase‐shift time migration of a dip moveout corrected stack; 2D prestack Kirchhoff time migration; swath 3D poststack migration; and our 2.5D multifocusing imaging algorithm. We found that applying the 2.5D multifocusing stacking algorithm followed by a poststack time migration approach improved the resolution of the image significantly compared to all the conventional and advanced methods and identified new reflections. The 2.5D multifocusing method also focused the steeply dipping reflections more coherently, which resolved ambiguities in geological architecture by understanding the location and continuity of structures. Aim: We aimed to apply ontological techniques to address semantic ambiguities in protected area and conservation informatics. By doing so, we aimed to create a coherent, machine‐actionable semantic representation of the biogeographic areas (which often overlap protected areas) to support more efficient and standardized informatics, supporting research and decision‐making. We present BIOREALM, the first informatic ontology for comparative biogeography. Location: Global. Taxon: Any taxon can be integrated in BIOREALM. Methods: We convert a cladogram of biogeographic areas—generated by a process known as bioregionalization—into a series of ontological classes. Areas of endemism are treated as formal objects related by hierarchical relationships and constrained by a condition of monophyly. We use semantic web approaches to extend the Environment Ontology (ENVO) with classes for (often semantically confounded) biogeographic entities, including biogeographic areas, areas of endemism and endemic areas. We applied this approach to a bioregionalization of Australia as a case study. In all, 20 subregions which are part of the Austral Bioregionalisation Atlas have been selected for the study and integrated in BIOREALM. Results: We have created an ontology—formatted in the Web Ontology Language and adhering to the practices of the Open Biomedical and Biological Ontology Foundry—which provides a rigorous, extensible and machine‐actionable framework that can improve biogeographic analyses and interoperability between systems. One main class and 20 individuals per class were implemented. Main Conclusions: BIOREALM encodes a model‐theoretic view of endemism using semantic web approaches, offering new avenues to express and analyse biogeographic units. This approach offers a means to identify monophyletic biogeographic areas for conservation, based on specific combinations of monophyletic endemic taxa. Such an ontology provides knowledge representation solutions which supports interoperability along the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles, thus fostering more consistent ecological informatics. Plutonium(IV) oxalate hexahydrate (Pu(C2O4)2 ⋅ 6 H2O; PuOx) is an important intermediate in the recovery of plutonium from used nuclear fuel. Its formation by precipitation is well studied, yet its crystal structure remains unknown. Instead, the crystal structure of PuOx is assumed to be isostructural with neptunium(IV) oxalate hexahydrate (Np(C2O4)2 ⋅ 6 H2O; NpOx) and uranium(IV) oxalate hexahydrate (U(C2O4)2 ⋅ 6 H2O; UOx) despite the high degree of unresolved disorder that exists when determining water positions in the crystal structures of the latter two compounds. Such assumptions regarding the isostructural behavior of the actinide elements have been used to predict the structure of PuOx for use in a wide range of studies. Herein, we report the first crystal structures for PuOx and Th(C2O4)2 ⋅ 6 H2O (ThOx). These data, along with new characterization of UOx and NpOx, have resulted in the full determination of the structures and resolution of the disorder around the water molecules. Specifically, we have identified the coordination of two water molecules with each metal center, which necessitates a change in oxalate coordination mode from axial to equatorial that has not been reported in the literature. The results of this work exemplify the need to revisit previous assumptions regarding fundamental actinide chemistry, which are heavily relied upon within the current nuclear field. How atmospheric pollution is perceived by urban dwellers has long been a topic of interest within geography and the social sciences, whether to draw attention to environmental injustices, to better understand the materialities and affects associated with polluted air, or to grasp how people ‘tune in’ to polluted matter. In this paper, we draw on three interrelated geographical and social science literatures on polluted air to inform our exploration of how residents of an industrial town in the UK encounter and perceive localised ambient air pollution. Using creative methods, we explore residents' narrative accounts of everyday life in the town, revealing how their engagements with the matter of pollution over time are drawn from multiple registers, giving rise to a plurality of perceptions filled with tensions between near and far, and between past, present and future, producing an ambiguous atmosphere all of its own. The paper contributes to geographic explorations of urban atmospheres an understanding of how they are differently experienced and known, and how residential perceptions might persist or change over different timescales. Understanding the geographical distribution of phenotypically highly similar species (i.e. cryptic species) represents a challenge to biogeographers, due to the obvious difficulties in identifying such taxa without specific expertise. Besides, citizen science is increasingly emerging as a key approach for supporting biodiversity data collection, but remains hard to apply in the case of cryptic species. Here we aim to test the combination of community records and photography‐based quantitative methods, for assessing the distribution of cryptic taxa, by using two grasshopper species of the genus Aiolopus as models. To achieve these objectives, we first assess the reliability of photography‐based diagnostic criteria to differentiate between A. thalassinus and A. puissanti without ambiguity from correctly identified records, and then apply such criteria to geographical regions of potential range overlap between the two species, in order to clarify their respective distributions. By applying a multivariate classification approach based on ratio measurements taken from photographs, we provide a quantitative tool to successfully identify the two species, and disclose that A. puissanti widely occurs outside of its currently known range, and outline potential research avenues on the biogeography of these poorly studied species. Our results also point at how some types of cryptic species may be effectively identified by adopting a quantitative photography‐based approach, with applicability for clarifying species' distributions at wide scales by exploiting publicly available citizen‐science records. Our study thus, besides shedding light onto the biogeography and distributions of Aiolopus grasshoppers across the Mediterranean, represents an effective and repeatable framework to disentangle the distributions of poorly studied cryptic species. Policies concerning undocumented immigrants are inevitably ambivalent, creating uncertainty and confusion in the implementation process. We identify a clear example of this ambivalence —U.S. law setting standards for determining the credibility of asylum seekers—that resulted in an increase in asylum grants despite policymakers' intention to make it harder for individuals to obtain the status. We argue that this law, The REAL ID Act of 2005, sent mixed messages to immigration judges (IJs), street‐level bureaucrats who implement immigration policy. It increased IJ discretion, but set vague limits. We theorize that IJs, behaving in a bounded rationality framework, use their professional legal training as a short‐cut and look primarily to the courts for guidance. Our evidence supports our argument. After the passage of the REAL ID Act, IJ decision‐making is more closely aligned with the preferences of their political and legal principals, and, in the final score, the federal circuit courts are the winners. The taxonomic status of the now likely extirpated Korean Peninsula wolf has been extensively debated, with some arguing it represents an independent wolf lineage, Canis coreanus. To investigate the Korean wolf's genetic affiliations and taxonomic status, we sequenced and analysed the genomes of a Korean wolf dated to the beginning of the 20th century, and a captive wolf originally from the Pyongyang Central Zoo. Our results indicated that the Korean wolf bears similar genetic ancestry to other regional East Asian populations, therefore suggesting it is not a distinct taxonomic lineage. We identified regional patterns of wolf population structure and admixture in East Asia with potential conservation consequences in the Korean Peninsula and on a regional scale. We find that the Korean wolf has similar genomic diversity and inbreeding to other East Asian wolves. Finally, we show that, in contrast to the historical sample, the captive wolf is genetically more similar to wolves from the Tibetan Plateau; hence, Korean wolf conservation programmes might not benefit from the inclusion of this specimen. Background: The interval between adolescence and adulthood, 'emerging adulthood' (EA), lays the foundation for lifelong health and well‐being. To date, there exist little empirical data – particularly in the neurobiological domain – to establish markers of risk and resilience during the transition to adulthood. This gap in the literature is concerning given the numerous forms of psychiatric illness that emerge or worsen during this period. Methods: In this review, we focus on two strands of research with distinct importance for EA: reward sensitivity, and tolerance of ambiguity. We begin by placing these domains in a framework that considers the unique developmental goals of EA and then synthesize emerging neurobiological research on how these domains develop during EA. We then consider their role in common mental health problems that occur during this interval as well as how social support may moderate outcomes. Finally, we offer recommendations for advancing research to understand developmental process and outcomes in EA. Findings and conclusions: Few longitudinal studies specifically address emerging adult development and the milestones that characterize this interval. Data on neurobiological development are similarly sparse. Understanding neurobiological development during this window and its links to key adjustment outcomes is crucial for optimizing outcomes. There is a growing tendency within various disciplines of the humanities to conflate the terms extraction and extractivism. While the first word has many everyday uses—tooth extraction, vanilla "extract"—the latter term was specifically coined to identify a malevolent imaginary that indemnifies the removal of so‐called "resources," especially when that displacement involves layers of violence and/or looks solely to satisfy a particular economic aim. Given these disparate denotations, the unqualified use of "extraction" synonymously with "extractivism" introduces unnecessary ambiguity, inviting divergent arguments that ultimately diminish an otherwise worthy discussion and losing sight of the grave issues that underlie the conversation's original intent. As such, this essay investigates the biblical origins of this false equivalency and suggests how this usage might be disentangled to properly recenter the malevolence its users are attempting to describe. Theories of behaviour, choice, and action have long presented an "act" as a kind of bottleneck of meaning‐making, where the action is either a cocktail of partial preferences or the survival of one over the rest. I argue that action is often something very (if subtly) different and propose "ambivalent action" as a category of moral action defined by the actor's conflicting intentions, in which the conflict is reified (not resolved) by the act. Situated in past and contemporary context, the term is an interdisciplinary bridge, with links from classical (if vague) theoretic treatments of "ambivalence" to new sociological analogies in the realm of quantum physics. I explore this duality through the case study of #BlackoutTuesday, a social media movement connected with global protests against police brutality and racism. The black square that characterized the movement is best understood as ambivalent action, as an act of two‐fold narrative‐making: "both" silence and speech. Cross‐linguistic comparisons serve as empirical tests generating evidence for and against lexical ambiguity in words like "good", "know", "the", "can", and "may". Critics question such comparisons' validity. This article examines how cross‐linguistic comparisons are treated as tests and shows that they have two predominant forms: one modeled on modus tollens, and another on Bayes' theorem, where the former is an enthymematic version of the latter. This analysis reveals the strengths and weaknesses of cross‐linguistic comparisons, and thereby guides interpretation of their results. The present study examines the discourse of the then Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras, following the 2018 July wildfire disaster in the Eastern Attica suburbs including Mati to reveal the frames employed by the main protagonist utilizing existing framing models while also incorporating the notions of ethic of care and strategic ambiguity. The then government received extensive criticism by the media and political opponents in regard to the management and communication responses of the then Prime Minister. A content analysis was conducted to the statements made by the then Prime Minister. Findings indicate that Tsipras during the initial stages of the crisis acknowledged the extent of crisis while also emphasizing the successful crisis response efforts. Moreover, strategic ambiguity along with low levels of "caring" were important elements of Tsipras' narrative at the initial stage. As the public outrage and criticism intensified, Tsipras incorporated a more caring profile and presented the disaster as a "critical opportunity" by shifting the blame to previous governments and proposing policy changes.
