Plain Language Summary: Miller et al. [2015, https://doi.org/10.1002/2015JE004825] described the result of experiments testing the potential of Tenax TA, a polymer used on Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM), as a source of chlorinated benzene. Miller et al. [2015] conclude that the amount of chlorobenzene produced is low and that Tenax TA cannot be the source of the chlorobenzene observed on Mars by SAM. Miller et al. [2015] did not provide the identification of two unknown compounds produced during these pyrolysis experiments, though their abundance is orders of magnitude higher than that of chlorobenzene. Here, we tentatively identify these compounds based on the mass spectra provided by Miller et al. [2015], the most abundant of which is a chlorinated monomer of Tenax TA. This chlorinated monomer is likely to accumulate in the hydrocarbon Tenax trap and in the transfer line between the trap and the mass spectrometer. Intertidal habitats provide numerous ecosystem services, including the sequestration and storage of carbon, a topic of great recent interest owing to land-cover transitions and climate change. Mangrove forests and seagrass meadows form a continuum of intertidal habitats, alongside unvegetated mudflats and sandbars, however, studies that consider carbon stocks across these spatially-linked, threatened ecosystems are limited world-wide. This paper presents the results of a field-based carbon stock assessment of aboveground, belowground and sediment organic carbon stock to a depth of 1 m at Chek Jawa, Singapore. It is the first study of ecosystem carbon stocks of both vegetated and unvegetated intertidal habitats in the tropics. Ecosystem carbon stocks were 497 Mg C ha-1 in the mangrove forest and 138 Mg C ha-1 in the seagrass meadow. Sediment organic carbon stock dominated the total storage in both habitats, constituting 62% and >99% in the mangrove forest and seagrass meadow, respectively. In the adjacent mudflat and sandbars, which had no vegetative components, sediment organic carbon stock ranged from 124-143 Mg C ha-1, suggesting that unvegetated habitats have a carbon storage role on the same order of importance as seagrass meadows. This study reinforces the importance of sediment in carbon storage within the intertidal ecosystem, and demonstrates the need to consider unvegetated habitats in intertidal 'blue carbon' stock assessments. Background and purpose Anosognosia and neglect may coexist in stroke patients. Neglect patients often report poor quality of life ( QOL), whereas patients suffering from other cognition disorders with poor insight report better QOL. This study investigates the relationship between anosognosia, neglect and QOL amongst stroke survivors. Methods Stroke survivors who met the criteria were used as a sampling pool. Sixty stroke patients were observed in this study, amongst whom 20 patients with anosognosia and neglect (A+N+), 20 patients with neglect but not anosognosia (A−N+) and 20 patients with neither anosognosia nor neglect (A−N−) were selected from the sampling pool based on demographic characteristics matched with the A+N+ group. A questionnaire ( SS- QOL) was used to collect the QOL perceived by the stroke survivors. Results The perceived QOL of the A+N+ group was significantly better than those of the other groups, including the subscales of self-care, mobility, work/productivity, upper extremity, mood, family role and social role. However, the A+N+ group had poor balance level and more fall incidents were reported. Conclusion The A+N+ group perceived better QOL but had more falls and poorer balance than the other groups. Aim To investigate factors affecting smoking cessation in male smokers with coronary artery disease. Design A descriptive, correlation, cross-sectional study was conducted. Methods Data were collected using a questionnaire constructed by a literature review of research on smoking cessation in male smokers including demographics and smoking background, as well as psychological, interpersonal and environmental factors. A total of 130 male patients with coronary artery disease were recruited from the cardiac clinic at a regional hospital in Taiwan from August to December 2008. The response rate was 93% ( n = 121). Descriptive statistics, chi-square, t-tests and logistic regression analysis were conducted. Results During the survey, 64.5% of the respondents reported that they had stopped smoking after a coronary event. Five factors were significantly associated with smoking cessation after diagnosis of coronary artery disease: age, the severity of heart diagnoses, antismoking norms (perceived that smoking was against the social norms), nicotine dependence level, and contrary views of smoking (perceived negative expectancy of smoking). Multivariate analysis revealed antismoking norms to be the most important predictor ( AOR = 4.27; P < .05) after adjusting age. Conclusion The study highlights the need to develop smoking cessation interventions that specifically counsel patients with coronary artery disease about these information, such as the disease risk and development, health consequences of smoking, and dependence therapy. Additionally, government support for tobacco control programmes in hospitals and elsewhere is designed to have a beneficial effect on patients' smoking behaviours primarily by increasing antismoking norms. We report a data set of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) obtained during three cruises in the northern Bay of Biscay carried out in June 2006, May 2007, and May 2008. During these cruises, blooms of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi occurred, as indicated by patches of high reflectance on remote sensing images, phytoplankton pigment signatures, and microscopic examinations. Total alkalinity showed a nonconservative behavior as a function of salinity due to the cumulative effect of net community calcification (NCC) on seawater carbonate chemistry during bloom development. The cuniulative effect of NCC and net community production (NCP) on DIC and the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) were evaluated. The decrease of DIC (and increase of pCO2) due to NCC was overwhelmingly lower than the decrease of DIC (and decrease of pCO2) due to NCP (NCC:NCP ⪡ 1). During the cruises, the northern Bay of Biscay acted as a sink of atmospheric CO2 (on average ∼-9.7 mmol C m-2 d-1 for the three cruises). The overall effect of NCC in decreasing the CO2 sink during the cruises was low (on average ∼12% of total air-sea CO2 flux). If this is a general feature in naturally occurring phytoplankton blooms in the North Atlantic Ocean (where blooms of coccolithophores are the most intense and recurrent), and in the global ocean, then the potential feedback on increasing atmospheric CO2 of the projected decrease of pelagic calcification due to thermodynamic CO2 "production" from calcification is probably minor compared to potential feedbacks related to changes of NCP. Aim. This paper is a report of a pilot study to examine the significance, direction, and magnitude of the relationship of risk factors, protective factors, and resilience to quality of life in survivors of childhood cancer, and to explore what these variables meant to participants in order to better understand the quantitative findings and to assess the validity of the instruments with this population. Background. Cancer survivors contend with physical, psychosocial and emotional consequences of the disease and its treatment. There has been little research in Taiwan assessing these outcomes and, as survivor numbers increase, appropriate interventions need to be implemented. Haase's Adolescent Resilience Model was used as the theoretical framework. Methods. A mixed methods design was used to assess the relationship between the variables for survivors of leukaemia and brain cancers. Ninety-eight participants completed quantitative tools and interviews, and the data were collected in 2006. Findings. Survivors of leukaemia had better quality of life than those with brain tumours. This is attributed to more positive protective factors, fewer illness-related and individual risk factors and more positive resilience scores. Findings were congruent with similar studies from other countries. Qualitatively, participants believed that better quality of life meant less loss of self, a more integrated self, less chronic fear, and an ability to rebound and achieve personal control over one's life. Conclusion. Interventions and assessment of their efficacy are necessary to help survivors capitalize on their strengths, to decrease their individual risks and to promote resilience promote self-control. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of maxillary sinus floor elevation by a tissue-engineered bone complex with OsteoBone™ and bone marrow stromal cells (bMSCs) in rabbits. Material and methods: Autologous bMSCs from adult New Zealand rabbits were cultured and combined with OsteoBone™ at a concentration of 20 × 106 cells/ml in vitro. Twenty-four animals were used and randomly allocated into groups. For each time point, 16 maxillary sinus floor elevation surgeries were made bilaterally in eight animals and randomly repaired by bMSCs/material (i.e. OsteoBone™), material, autogenous bone and blood clot ( n=4 per group). A polychrome sequential fluorescent labeling was also performed post-operatively. The animals were sacrificed 2, 4 and 8 weeks after the procedure and evaluated histologically as well as histomorphometrically. Results: New bone area significantly decreased from weeks 2 to 8 in the blood clot group, while bone area in the autologous bone reduced from weeks 4 to 8. In both groups, a significant amount of fatty tissue appeared at week 8. Accordingly, augmented height in both groups was also significantly decreased from weeks 2 to 8. The bone area in the material-alone group as well as in the bMSCs/material group, on the other hand, increased over time. Significantly more newly formed bone area and mineralization was observed in the center of the raised space in the bMSCs/material group than in the material-alone group. The augmented height was maintained in these two groups throughout the course of this study. Conclusion: These results suggest that OsteoBone™ can successfully be used as a bone graft substitute and that the combination of this material with bMSCs can effectively promote new bone formation in sinus elevation. The presence of anℇ2 allele alone was not associated with lower risk for AD, but the presence of anℇ2 allele was associated with anℇ4 allele frequency similar to that of controls.The low allele frequency ofℇ4 in persons with anℇ2 allele suggests that this may be part of the protective effect ofℇ2 against AD. The objective of this study was to determine the cytocompatibility of three different extracts of gingival retraction cords and to compare the cytotoxic effect of these materials on human gingival fibroblasts. Gingival retraction cords impregnated with aluminium sulphate (GingiAid), DL-adrenaline HCl (Gingi-Pak) and non-drugimpregnated cord (Gingi-Plain) were eluted with culture medium for 10 min and 24 h. Cytotoxicity was judged using a tetrazolium bromide reduction assay. Our data demonstrated that gingival retraction cords applied alone almost completely inhibited cell viability (P < 0.05). In addition, the results also showed that the eluates from aluminium sulphate-impregnated cord, DL-adrenaline HClimpregnated cord and non-drug-impregnated cord were cytotoxic to primary human gingival fibroblast cultures (P < 0.05). The cell viability of incubation of gingival fibroblasts containing 10-min eluates of aluminium sulphate, DL-adrenaline HCl and non-drug-impregnated cord was 61, 21 and 70%, respectively. The cell viability of incubation of gingival fibroblasts containing 24 h eluates of aluminium sulphate, DL-adrenaline HCl and non-drugimpregnated cord was 68, 58 and 72%, respectively. It was found that DL-adrenaline HCl-impregnated gingival retraction cord was the most toxic gingival retraction cord among the materials tested in all cultures (P < 0.05). The cytotoxicity decreased in an order of DL-adrenaline HCl-impregnated cord > aluminium sulphate-impregnated cord > non-drugimpregnated cord. The extent or degree of the cytotoxicity depended on the materials tested. Gingival retraction cords have significant potential for gingival toxicity. Careful management of gingiva retraction cords would lower the risk of potential gingival tissue damage during clinical application procedure and thus increase the success of prosthodontic procedures. The mechanism underlying a transition of the oral cavity mucosal epithelium towards susceptibility to opportunistic infections in HIV-seropositive patients was investigated. Phenotypic markers CD1a, HLA-DR, and CD86 of oral mucosal Langerhans' cells (LCs), p17 core protein of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and CD45RO of memory T cells were labeled on oral hairy leukoplakia lesional biopsies and clinically normal autologous tissue of HIV-infected patients. HIV p17 protein was detected in association with mucosal LCs, mainly within the lesional epithelium. There were significant correlations between the detection of HIV p17 and the depletion of LCs, and between the depletion of LCs and the presence of hairy leukoplakia lesions. Conjugates of activated LCs and memory T cells were also evident in the submucosal area of lesional biopsies. The findings from this study support the hypothesis that oral mucosal LCs are also the target of HIV infection. Cytopathic changes of LCs caused by productive HIV infection may contribute to selective depletion of LCs, which may impair the mucosal immunologic protection against colonization by microorganisms causing HIV-associated oral mucosal lesions. AbstractThe classification within the bottlenose dolphin (genus Tursiops) is controversial. Although many morphological variants exist, most authors have concluded that the genus is composed of a single species, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu 1821). Two distinct morphotypes of bottlenose dolphins, which have been referred to as T. truncatus and T. aduncus, exist in sympatry in Chinese waters. Comparisons of a 386-bp fragment of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (n = 47) indicated that the two sympatric morphotypes were genetically distinct, with seven fixed site differences and a sequence divergence of approximately 4.4%. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum likelihood, neighbour-joining and maximum parsimony approaches showed that the truncatus-type dolphins from Chinese waters were more closely related to Atlantic Ocean truncatus-type than to the sympatric aduncus-type dolphins. The Atlantic truncatus-type dolphins also shared the same diagnostic sites that separated Chinese truncatus-type from aduncus-type dolphins. The molecular data agreed completely with the morphological classifications of the specimens. This congruence is strong evidence that the sympatric morphotypes in Chinese waters are reproductively isolated and comprise two distinct species. Ray-based methods have been previously developed for accurately predicting the electromagnetic scattering from cavity interiors that allowed for realistic modelling of complex cavities such as jet engine inlets. An analytic geometric model is developed for bifurcated cavities based on connecting sections of generalized super-ellipse functions. Betel quid chewing has been linked to oral submucous fibrosis and oral cancer. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity assays were used to investigate the pathobiological effects of arecoline on cultured human buccal fibroblasts. Arecoline increased double-stranded polynucleic acid at the concentration of 0.1 to 10 micrograms/ml in a concentration-dependent manner. At a concentration higher than 50 micrograms/ml, arecoline was cytotoxic to cultured fibroblasts and the cytotoxicity was dose-dependent. No genotoxicity for arecoline was found even at a concentration of 400 micrograms/ml. On the other hand, 600 micrograms/ml glutathione (GSH) and 200 micrograms/ml glycyrrhizin could prevent the arecoline-induced cytotoxicity. These results indicate that arecoline is a cytotoxic agent and no genotoxicity was found to human buccal fibroblasts. Furthermore, increasing consumption of GSH- and glycyrrhizin-rich foods may reduce the oral diseases associated with betel quid chewing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Localized absence of epithelial Langerhans cells (LC) has been shown to affect systemic immune responses, allow microbial colonization and play a possible role in carcinogenesis. Because use of smokeless tobacco is associated with abnormal oral mucosal changes and development of carcinoma, we examined lesion and control specimens from 17 current users of smokeless tobacco to determine whether lesions showed changes in LC number or antigen expression. We identified LC by immunohistochemistry with antibodies to the antigens T6, HLA-DR, HLA-DQ, and HLA-DP. Lesion specimens contained fewer LC (means of 6 LC/mm and 10 LC/mm[SUP2]) than did the corresponding control specimens (means of 14 LC/mm and 30 LC/mm[SUP2]), and in each pair of lesion and autologous control specimens the reduction in LC was on average 58% (range, 3% to 95%). There were no apparent differences between lesion and control specimens in the number of LC expressing each of the four marker antigens. Reductions in LC occurred in all types of smokeless tobacco-associated lesions, regardless of increased epithelial thickness or changes in keratinization. Our data indicate that smokeless tobacco reduces the number of Langerhans cells at its site of contact with the oral mucosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the investigation of the unusual cetacean mortality rate along the coast of Taiwan from July 19 to august 13 2005. The investigation states that cetacean stranding involved 13 dwarf sperm whales, 2 longman's beaked whales, 2 pygmy sperm whales, two striped dolphins, a pantropical spotted dolphin, and a short-finned pilot whale. It also mentions that the mortality event is suspected to be caused by high-intensity acoustic energy from naval activities.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the presence of alteration of the tumor suppressor gene p16 and to correlate these changes with the clinical status of the patients in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Forty-eight oral squamous cell carcinomas were included in the analyses. Deletion analysis was performed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Mutation analysis was restricted to exon 1 and exon 2 of the p16 gene, previously shown to have a high incidence of mutations. The sequences containing exon 1 and exon 2 were amplified by PCR and screened with a single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) technique. Samples showing band shifts in SSCP were sequenced by PCR direct sequencing. Western blots were used to detect the protein expression of the p16 gene, and the results were evaluated with regard to their biological relevance in correlation with clinicopathological factors. Seven (14.6%) deletions were found; 5 (10.4%) mutations were discovered and located in different codons; 26 (54%) specimens had no p16 protein expression; in 11 specimens with p16 deletion or mutation, p16 protein could not be detected. One mutation was non-sense. The p16 gene alterations showed no relationship with location and clinical stage of cancer; however, a close relationship between p16 alterations and cancer metastasis to neck lymph node was found. The alteration rate gradually elevated from well to poorly differentiated grades. We perceive two results. First, the alterations of the p16 gene are common in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Second, the alterations of the p16 gene may attribute to the metastatic behavior or histological grade of cancer cells.
