Plant‐available soil‐water and adequate soil aeration within the root zone are essential corequisites for successful plant growth. Characterization of these two requirements for plant growth is generally done by independent measurements of water and air phase properties and functions in soil, with limited emphasis on their combined effect. This study investigated soil‐water characteristic (SWC) measurements in vadose soil profiles (up to 117‐cm depth) in six pasture soils to examine the combined behavior of soil‐water and diffusion‐controlled aeration within the root zone. The soil moisture measurements were made over matric potentials ranging from −1 to −1500 kPa using tension table and pressure plate apparatus. The van Genuchten model was used to parameterize the measured SWC curve, while the Millington–Quick model was used to derive soil‐gas diffusivity from measured soil physical properties. Based on two simple indices, derived to represent plant‐available soil‐water and soil aeration status at a given moisture content, we propose an assessment matrix, which illustrates how a soil satisfies the corequisites for successful plant growth, as it drains to different matric potentials upon irrigation. Results show a pronounced effect of soil texture and, to a lesser extent, soil structure on satisfying these corequisites. With the aid of the assessment matrix, we observed that loam, sandy loam textures exhibited a good overall performance, while sand, clay loam, and clay soils struggled to meet these corequisites during drainage. Informed scientific thinking is a vital component of engaging all socioscientific issues (SSI) such as climate change and the COVID‐19 pandemic. However, socioscientific engagement may be influenced by sociocultural factors and mis/disinformation efforts to the widespread detriment of human and environmental well‐being. The purpose of this mixed‐methods study was to determine how 506 post‐secondary life science majors' COVID‐19 related nature science (NOS) views and COVID‐19 vaccine acceptance/support and conspiracy resistance changed through pandemic responsive instruction on COVID‐19 science, viral biology, and vaccines with integrated focus on NOS and mis/disinformation. This investigation also sought to reveal factors (e.g., sociocultural group membership, NOS views) that associated with changes in those students' COVID‐19 vaccine acceptance/support and conspiracy resistance. After experiencing the pandemic responsive instruction, the students' COVID‐19 vaccine acceptance/support and conspiracy resistance and trust in COVID‐19 science and cognizance of its reliable and revisionary character (i.e., NOS) significantly improved from a small to large extent. Through the pandemic responsive instruction, the students' development of NOS views significantly associated with their development of higher levels of vaccine acceptance and conspiracy resistance and increases in students' vaccine conspiracy resistance significantly associated with increases in vaccine acceptance. Changes in students' vaccine acceptance and conspiracy resistance from before to after the pandemic responsive instruction also varied significantly based on sociocultural grouping (e.g., race/ethnicity and political orientation). Despite the promising impact demonstrated by the pandemic responsive instruction, vaccine conspiracy views and resistance appeared to linger among the students who notably were entering fields that deal with viruses, vaccines, and public health. Implications discussed include the importance for helping students to understand NOS relevant to SSI and analyze how sociocultural membership, motivated and identity protective reasoning processes, mis/disinformation, and trust in science influence socioscientific decision‐making. Objectives: Videoconference psychotherapy (VCP) is a crucial component of many health care systems, allowing for remote delivery of services. However, little is known about the mechanisms of change within VCP. Previous research has suggested that self‐disclosure may be greater in VCP than face‐to‐face modalities and was investigated in the current study. Design: Young adults aged 18–25 years (N = 57) were randomly allocated to face‐to‐face or VCP interview conditions, with measures completed pre‐ and post‐interview. Methods: Participants completed an autobiographical memory task, requiring them to describe specific memories in response to positive and negative valence cue words. Measures included self‐reported self‐disclosure, blind observer‐rated self‐disclosure, memory specificity, and mean number of words per response. Results: No significant differences were found between conditions with regard to self‐reported self‐disclosure, capacity to recall specific memories, or words uttered per response. However, observer‐rated depth of self‐disclosure was significantly higher for participants in the face‐to‐face than VCP condition. Self‐disclosure and memory specificity were also significantly greater for negative than positive valence cue words, regardless of condition. Conclusions: The findings indicate that whilst participants may be able to draw on memories with equal ease regardless of interview modality, in VCP, emotional processing of these memories may require increased support and guidance from the therapist. Objectives: Among residents who had a residential medication management review (RMMR), there is a lack of studies assessing exposure to polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) in people with dementia. This study compared the exposure to polypharmacy and PIMs in residents with dementia and without dementia receiving RMMR. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed using data of 16,261 residents living in 343 Australian residential aged care facilities who had an RMMR in 2019. Medication use was assessed as polypharmacy (defined as ≥9 medications) and use of ≥1 PIMs using the 2019 updated Beers criteria. Dementia diagnosis was determined with ICD‐10 coding from medical records. Descriptive analyses reported resident demographics and patterns of medication use. Pearson's χ2 tests and logistic regression analysis were conducted to compare medication exposure between residents with and without dementia. Results: Among 16,261 residents, 6781 (42%) had dementia. Residents with dementia were significantly more likely to be exposed to polypharmacy and PIMs, compared to those without dementia (74% vs. 70% and 83% vs. 73%, p <.001 respectively). Residents with dementia had 1.31 times the odds of exposure to polypharmacy (adjusted OR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.22–1.41, p <.001) and 1.88 times the odds of being prescribed ≥1 PIMs than people without dementia (adjusted OR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.73–2.04, p <.001). Conclusions: In a study of residents receiving RMMR, polypharmacy and PIMs were highly common, and those with dementia were more likely to be exposed to inappropriate polypharmacy. Studies of the impact of brain injury on memory processes often focus on the quantity and episodic richness of those recollections. Here, we argue that the organization of one's recollections offers critical insights into the impact of brain injury on functional memory. It is well‐established in studies of word list memory that free recall of unrelated words exhibits a clear temporal organization. This temporal contiguity effect refers to the fact that the order in which word lists are recalled reflects the original presentation order. Little is known, however, about the organization of recall for semantically rich materials, nor how recall organization is impacted by hippocampal damage and memory impairment. The present research is the first study, to our knowledge, of temporal organization in semantically rich narratives in three groups: (1) Adults with bilateral hippocampal damage and severe declarative memory impairment, (2) adults with bilateral ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) damage and no memory impairment, and (3) demographically matched non‐brain‐injured comparison participants. We find that although the narrative recall of adults with bilateral hippocampal damage reflected the temporal order in which those narratives were experienced above chance levels, their temporal contiguity effect was significantly attenuated relative to comparison groups. In contrast, individuals with vmPFC damage did not differ from non‐brain‐injured comparison participants in temporal contiguity. This pattern of group differences yields insights into the cognitive and neural systems that support the use of temporal organization in recall. These data provide evidence that the retrieval of temporal context in narrative recall is hippocampal‐dependent, whereas damage to the vmPFC does not impair the temporal organization of narrative recall. This evidence of limited but demonstrable organization of memory in participants with hippocampal damage and amnesia speaks to the power of narrative structures in supporting meaningfully organized recall despite memory impairment. There is increasing evidence that therapy and intervention services delivered by telehealth are effective at reducing a variety of mental health symptoms. Limited studies have indicated online services can reduce intimate partner violence (IPV), but none have tested in‐person compared to telehealth‐delivered interventions for men who have used IPV. Clinical outcome data from 311 parents (192 fathers and 119 linked coparent mothers) engaged in the Fathers for Change (F4C) intervention following referral by child protective services for IPV were examined to determine if in‐person delivery of the intervention differed in terms of client treatment engagement and retention or outcomes. Parents who enrolled during a 1‐year period prior to the COVID pandemic received their F4C therapy in person, while those who enrolled during the pandemic received their intake and most of their sessions via telehealth delivery. Parents reported significantly greater symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress prior to treatment if they enrolled prior to COVID than if they enrolled during the pandemic. There were few differences in completion rates or outcomes based on in‐person compared to telehealth delivery. Fathers were slightly more likely to complete treatment and attended a significantly higher percentage of their sessions when it was delivered by telehealth during COVID. Fathers reported significantly lower stress scores posttreatment when they received COVID telehealth delivery compared to prior to COVID in‐person delivery of F4C. Global food production relying on irrigated agriculture accounts for >70% of the global freshwater withdrawal. A thorough understanding of soil–water characteristics (SWCs) and critical soil–water values in the soil and subsoil is important for effective management of irrigated water. A critical soil–water "window" for plants is generally taken as the plant‐available water window without considering diffusion‐dominated soil aeration as a co‐requisite. This study examined SWC curves in vadose soil profiles (up to 1.5‐m depth) in eight pasture soils. The soil moisture measurements were made over matric potentials ranging from −1 to −1500 kPa using tension table and pressure plate apparatus. The van Genuchten model was used to parameterize the measured SWC curve, while the Millington‐Quirk model was used to derive soil–gas diffusivity from measured soil physical properties. We defined critical soil–water windows considering the threshold values for both plant‐available water and soil–gas diffusivity to ensure water and aeration corequisites for plant growth. The results clearly distinguished depth‐dependent regimes of gravitational, plant‐available, and unavailable water in selected profiles and their responses to soil structural changes across the depth. In some of the observed soil profiles, only 30%–60% of the plant‐available water window was able to be utilized by plants because the remainder existed under soil conditions where soil aeration was inadequate for plant growth, emphasizing the importance of considering both the plant's water and aeration requirements during irrigation scheduling. Further, the infiltration profiles in two selected soils under simulated irrigation highlighted the importance of a priori knowledge of the soil structure in deeper soil layers for scheduling irrigation. Environmental change is disrupting mutualisms between organisms worldwide. Reported declines in insect populations and changes in pollinator community compositions in response to land use and other environmental drivers have put the spotlight on the need to conserve pollinators. While this is often motivated by their role in supporting crop yields, the role of pollinators for reproduction and resulting taxonomic and functional assembly in wild plant communities has received less attention. Recent findings suggest that observed and experimental gradients in pollinator availability can affect plant community composition, but we know little about when such shifts are to be expected, or the impact they have on ecosystem functioning. Correlations between plant traits related to pollination and plant traits related to other important ecosystem functions, such as productivity, nitrogen uptake or palatability to herbivores, lead us to expect non‐random shifts in ecosystem functioning in response to changes in pollinator communities. At the same time, ecological and evolutionary processes may counteract these effects of pollinator declines, limiting changes in plant community composition, and in ecosystem functioning. Despite calls to investigate community‐ and ecosystem‐level impacts of reduced pollination, the study of pollinator effects on plants has largely been confined to impacts on plant individuals or single‐species populations. With this review we aim to break new ground by bringing together aspects of landscape ecology, ecological and evolutionary plant–insect interactions, and biodiversity–ecosystem functioning research, to generate new ideas and hypotheses about the ecosystem‐level consequences of pollinator declines in response to land‐use change, using grasslands as a focal system. Based on an integrated set of seven hypotheses, we call for more research investigating the putative pollinator‐mediated links between landscape‐scale land use and ecosystem functioning. In particular, future research should use combinations of experimental and observational approaches to assess the effects of changes in pollinator communities over multiple years and across species on plant communities and on trait distributions both within and among species. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas and causes stratospheric ozone depletion. While the emissions of N2O from soil are widely recognized, recent research has shown that terrestrial plants may also emit N2O from their leaves under controlled laboratory conditions. However, it is unclear whether foliar N2O emissions are universal across varying plant taxa, what the global significance of foliar N2O emissions is, and how the foliage produces N2O in situ. Here we investigated the abilities of 25 common plant taxa, including trees, shrubs and herbs, to emit N2O under in situ conditions. Using 15N isotopic labeling, we demonstrated that the foliage-emitted N2O was predominantly derived from nitrate. Moreover, by selectively injecting biocide in conjunction with the isolating and back-inoculating of endophytes, we demonstrated that the foliar N2O emissions were driven by endophytic bacteria. The seasonal N2O emission rates ranged from 3.2 to 9.2 ng N2O–N g−1 dried foliage h−1. Extrapolating these emission rates to global foliar biomass and plant N uptake, we estimated global foliar N2O emission to be 1.21 and 1.01 Tg N2O–N year−1, respectively. These estimates account for 6%–7% of the current global annual N2O emission of 17 Tg N2O–N year−1, indicating that in situ foliar N2O emission is a universal process for terrestrial plants and contributes significantly to the global N2O inventory. This finding highlights the importance of measuring foliar N2O emissions in future studies to enable the accurate assigning of mechanisms and the development of effective mitigation. Background: Environmental exposure to peanut through non‐oral routes is a risk factor for peanut allergy. Early‐life exposure to air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), is associated with sensitization to foods through unknown mechanisms. We investigated whether PM promotes sensitization to environmental peanut and the development of peanut allergy in a mouse model. Methods: C57BL/6J mice were co‐exposed to peanut and either urban particulate matter (UPM) or diesel exhaust particles (DEP) via the airways and assessed for peanut sensitization and development of anaphylaxis following peanut challenge. Peanut‐specific CD4+ T helper (Th) cell responses were characterized by flow cytometry and Th cytokine production. Mice lacking select innate immune signaling genes were used to study mechanisms of PM‐induced peanut allergy. Results: Airway co‐exposure to peanut and either UPM‐ or DEP‐induced systemic sensitization to peanut and anaphylaxis following peanut challenge. Exposure to UPM or DEP triggered activation and migration of lung dendritic cells to draining lymph nodes and induction of peanut‐specific CD4+ Th cells. UPM‐ and DEP‐induced distinct Th responses, but both stimulated expansion of T follicular helper (Tfh) cells essential for peanut allergy development. MyD88 signaling was critical for UPM‐ and DEP‐induced peanut allergy, whereas TLR4 signaling was dispensable. DEP‐induced peanut allergy and Tfh‐cell differentiation depended on IL‐1 but not IL‐33 signaling, whereas neither cytokine alone was necessary for UPM‐mediated sensitization. Background: It is important that young adults with a chronic health condition or developmental disability, such as cerebral palsy, receive adequate healthcare transition preparation and support to optimise the transition period and transfer from paediatric to adult health services. Understanding the healthcare experiences of young adults during and after the transition period will provide valuable insights into what enables a positive healthcare experience for young adults in the adult health setting. Methods: Eleven young adults with cerebral palsy who had their last appointment at the Royal Children's Hospital between 2016 and 2018 were purposively recruited for this study. Ten participants completed one‐on‐one telephone interviews, and one participant provided written responses to interview questions. Five participated via parent proxy. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed using the Braun and Clarke six‐step thematic analysis to create an interpretive description of participants' transition experiences. Results: Three themes were generated: (1) "preparedness of the young adult and parent," which discussed the preparation for adult healthcare, with subthemes (a) expectations of adult care and (b) development of self‐management skills during transition; (2) "coordination of transfer process and continuity of care," which illustrated the impact of transfer coordination on continuity of care; and (3) "adjusting to adult services," which highlighted experiences of care in the adult setting, with subthemes (a) differences between paediatric and adult services, (b) availability and accessibility of adult and community services to meet needs, and (c) autonomy and agency. Conclusion: Dedicated transition support for young adults and their parents during transition from paediatric to adult healthcare plays an important role in ensuring a supportive and well‐coordinated transition and transfer of care. Experience of care in the adult setting is influenced by a combination of both transition experience and the capacity of adult services to cater for young adults' needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: In Queensland, where a person experiences a major disturbance in their mental capacity, and is at risk of serious harm to self and others, an emergency examination authority (EEA) authorises Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) to detain and transport the person to an ED. In the ED, further detention for up to 12 h is authorised to allow the examination to be completed. Little published information describes these critical patient encounters. Methods: Queensland's Public Health Act (2005), amended in 2017, mandates the use of the approved EEA form. Data were extracted from a convenience sample of 942 EEAs including: (i) patient age, sex, address; (ii) free text descriptions by QPS and QAS officers of the person's behaviour and any serious risk of harm requiring urgent care; (iii) time examination period commenced; and (iv) outcome upon examination. Results: Of 942 EEA forms, 640 (68%) were retrieved at three 'larger central' hospitals and 302 (32%) at two 'smaller regional' hospitals in non‐metropolitan Queensland. QPS initiated 342 (36%) and QAS 600 (64%) EEAs for 486 (52%) males, 453 (48%) females and two intersexes (<1%), aged from 9 to 85 years (median 29 years, 17% aged <18 years). EEAs commonly occurred on weekends (32%) and between 2300 and midnight (8%), characterised by 'drug and/or alcohol issues' (53%), 'self‐harm' (40%), 'patient aggression' (25%) and multiple prior EEAs (23%). Although information was incomplete, most patients (78%, n = 419/534) required no inpatient admission. Over recent decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the manufacture of engineered nanomaterials, which has inevitably led to their environmental release. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is among the more abundant nanomaterial manufactured due to its advantageous properties, used for piezoelectric, semiconducting, and antibacterial purposes. Plastic waste is ubiquitous and may break down or delaminate into smaller microplastics, leaving open the question of whether these small polymers may alter the fate of ZnO through adsorption within aquatic media (tap‐water and seawater). Here, scanning electron microscopy analysis confirms the effective Zn nano/microstructures adsorption onto polystyrene surfaces after only 24‐h incubation in the aquatic media. After pre‐aging the nanomaterials for 7‐days in different environmental media, nanoprobe X‐ray absorption near‐edge spectroscopy analysis reveals significant ZnO transformation toward Zn‐sulfide and Zn‐phosphate. The interaction between a commercial ZnO‐based sunscreen with polystyrene and a cleanser consumer containing microbeads with ZnO nanomaterials is also studied, revealing the adsorption of transformed Zn‐species in the microplastics surfaces, highlighting the environmental relevancy of this work. Understanding the structural and functional impacts of the microplastics/ZnO complexes, and how they evolve, will provide insights into their chemical nature, stability, transformations, and fate, which is key to predicting their bioreactivity in the environment. Mechanochromic materials alter their color in response to mechanical force and are useful for both fundamental studies and practical applications. Several approaches are used to render polymers mechanochromic, but they generally suffer from limitations in sensing range, capacity to provide quantitative information, and their capability to enable broad and simple implementation. Here, is it reported that these problems can be overcome by combining photonic structures, which alter their reflection upon deformation, with covalent mechanophores, whose spectral properties change upon mechanically induced bond scission, in hierarchically structured mechanochromic pigments. This is achieved by synthesizing microspheres consisting of an elastic polymer with spiropyran‐based cross‐links and non‐close‐packed silica nanoparticles. A strain of less than 1% can be detected in a shift of the reflection band from the photonic structure, while the onset strain for the conversion of the spiropyran into fluorescent merocyanine ranges from 30% to 70%, creating a broad strain detection range. The two responses are tailorable and synergistic, permitting the activation strain for the mechanophore response to be tuned. The mechano‐sensing photonic pigments are demonstrated to be readily incorporated into different polymeric materials of interest and quantitatively probe spatially heterogeneous deformations over a large strain range. Visual snow syndrome (VSS) is a neurological disorder characterized by a range of continuous visual disturbances. Little is known about the functional pathological mechanisms underlying VSS and their effect on brain network topology, studied using high‐resolution resting‐state (RS) 7 T MRI. Forty VSS patients and 60 healthy controls underwent RS MRI. Functional connectivity matrices were calculated, and global efficiency (network integration), modularity (network segregation), local efficiency (LE, connectedness neighbors) and eigenvector centrality (significance node in network) were derived using a dynamic approach (temporal fluctuations during acquisition). Network measures were compared between groups, with regions of significant difference correlated with known aberrant ocular motor VSS metrics (shortened latencies and higher number of inhibitory errors) in VSS patients. Lastly, nodal co‐modularity, a binary measure of node pairs belonging to the same module, was studied. VSS patients had lower modularity, supramarginal centrality and LE dynamics of multiple (sub)cortical regions, centered around occipital and parietal lobules. In VSS patients, lateral occipital cortex LE dynamics correlated positively with shortened prosaccade latencies (p =.041, r =.353). In VSS patients, occipital, parietal, and motor nodes belonged more often to the same module and demonstrated lower nodal co‐modularity with temporal and frontal regions. This study revealed reduced dynamic variation in modularity and local efficiency strength in the VSS brain, suggesting that brain network dynamics are less variable in terms of segregation and local clustering. Further investigation of these changes could inform our understanding of the pathogenesis of the disorder and potentially lead to treatment strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: The soybean Rpp1 locus confers resistance to Phakopsora pachyrhizi, causal agent of rust, and resistance is usually dominant over susceptibility. However, dominance of Rpp1‐mediated resistance is lost when a resistant genotype (Rpp1 or Rpp1b) is crossed with susceptible line TMG06_0011, and the mechanism of this dominant susceptibility (DS) is unknown. Sequencing the Rpp1 region reveals that the TMG06_0011 Rpp1 locus has a single nucleotide‐binding site leucine‐rich repeat (NBS‐LRR) gene (DS‐R), whereas resistant PI 594760B (Rpp1b) is similar to PI 200492 (Rpp1) and has three NBS‐LRR resistance gene candidates. Evidence that DS‐R is the cause of DS was reflected in virus‐induced gene silencing of DS‐R in Rpp1b/DS‐R or Rpp1/DS‐R heterozygous plants with resistance partially restored. In heterozygous Rpp1b/DS‐R plants, expression of Rpp1b candidate genes was not significantly altered, indicating no effect of DS‐R on transcription. Physical interaction of the DS‐R protein with candidate Rpp1b resistance proteins was supported by yeast two‐hybrid studies and in silico modeling. Thus, we conclude that suppression of resistance most likely does not occur at the transcript level, but instead probably at the protein level, possibly with Rpp1 function inhibited by binding to the DS‐R protein. The DS‐R gene was found in other soybean lines, with an estimated allele frequency of 6% in a diverse population, and also found in wild soybean (Glycine soja). The identification of a dominant susceptible NBS‐LRR gene provides insight into the behavior of NBS‐LRR proteins and serves as a reminder to breeders that the dominance of an R gene can be influenced by a susceptibility allele. Significance Statement: Most resistance genes are inherited dominantly, although the present study serves as a reminder to breeders that the dominance of an R gene can be influenced by a susceptibility allele. The study identified a susceptible NBS‐LRR allele that can negate the dominance of the Rpp1‐mediated resistance to Asian soybean rust. Soil gas diffusivity (Dp/Do, gas diffusion coefficients in soil and in free air, respectively) and its relation to soil moisture is of great importance for describing and quantifying essential provisional and regulatory functions associated with terrestrial ecosystems such as soil aeration and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Because gas migration in terrestrial soil systems is predominantly diffusion controlled, soil gas diffusivity becomes a fundamental prerequisite to quantify diffusive gas fluxes. Descriptive–predictive models are often used to estimate Dp/Do from easily measurable soil physical properties. Most of the available models take the form of power‐law functions and often tend to mischaracterize soil moisture effects at high moisture regimes. Based on a wide range Dp/Do data available in literature representing both intact and repacked soils, this study developed a novel air‐saturation‐dependent exponential (ASEX) gas diffusivity model to model Dp/Do in relation to soil air saturation. The model variable α, which represents the diffusivity at half air saturation normalized by the same in complete soil air saturation, could potentially differentiate moisture effects on different soil structural states. For specific applications in intact soils, we propose corresponding α values for upper‐limit (α =.6) and lower‐limit (α =.05) estimates of diffusivity, while an average value (α =.3) for general applications in both intact and repacked soils. As expected, our model based on a few a priori measured supportive data showed a better performance over the classical predictive models that do not use such measurements. The new model was further used to derive useful implications to showcase soil density effects on Dp/Do. Core Ideas: ASEX model is developed to predict soil gas diffusivity against air saturation. Control of crop pests by shifting host plant availability and natural enemy activity at landscape scales has great potential to enhance the sustainability of agriculture. However, mainstreaming natural pest control requires improved understanding of how its benefits can be realized across a variety of agroecological contexts. Empirical studies suggest significant but highly variable responses of natural pest control to land‐use change. Current ecological models are either too specific to provide insight across agroecosystems or too generic to guide management with actionable predictions. We suggest obtaining the full benefit of available empirical, theoretical, and methodological knowledge by combining trait‐mediated understanding from correlative studies with the explicit representation of causal relationships achieved by mechanistic modeling. To link these frameworks, we adapt the concept of archetypes, or context‐specific generalizations, from sustainability science. Similar responses of natural pest control to land‐use gradients across cases that share key attributes, such as functional traits of focal organisms, indicate general processes that drive system behavior in a context‐sensitive manner. Based on such observations of natural pest control, a systematic definition of archetypes can provide the basis for mechanistic models of intermediate generality that cover all major agroecosystems worldwide. Example applications demonstrate the potential for upscaling understanding and improving predictions of natural pest control, based on knowledge transfer and scientific synthesis. A broader application of this mechanistic archetype approach promises to enhance ecology's contribution to natural resource management across diverse regions and social‐ecological contexts. Background: Duplex ultrasound is the first line of investigation for patients seeking treatment for varicose veins disease. In Australia, chronic venous insufficiency ultrasound examinations (CVI‐US) are primarily performed by sonographers. The use of clinical guidelines facilitates the practice of ultrasound, and more importantly, provides an assurance to the integrity and quality of the examinations. Our aim is to assess the quality of currently available guidelines and provide recommendations for choosing the appropriate guideline to use and suggestions for future guideline development. Method: We performed a systematic literature search of the Cochrane, EMBASE, EBSCO, Medline, PubMed, Google and the database of the University of Sydney. The scope covered guidelines from 2000 to 2020 available in English. Identified guidelines were appraised by four independent reviewers (sonographers) using the revised version of the Appraisal of Guidelines Research and Evaluation instrument. Results: A total of 10 guidelines were included for critical appraisal. Analysis of the results showed most guidelines were rated low quality except for the International Union of Phlebology consensus document (2006) and technical guideline by Zygmunt and colleagues (2020). Overall, Domain 1 (Scope and purposes) achieved the highest score (total score = 67.9% ± 17.3%), whereas, Domain 3 (Rigour of development) had the lowest score (total score = 41.1% ± 13.5%). Conclusion: The overall quality of CVI‐US guidelines is poor. This study highlights the demand for developing ultrasound guidelines based on methodologically sound principles along with updated scientific evidence. Background: The outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID‐19) pandemic in the United States resulted in safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) intended to curb the spread of the virus. Adolescents are potentially at risk for disregarding these guidelines due to their reduced psychosocial maturity compared with adults. The current study examined the relationship between adolescents' psychosocial maturity, perceived importance of the CDC guidelines and adherence to the CDC guidelines within some of the highest risk groups for contracting COVID‐19 in a county particularly impacted by the pandemic (i.e., Hispanic and low‐SES youth in El Paso, Texas). Methods: Participants completed a phone interview with a research assistant regarding their thoughts and behaviours in the initial months of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Adolescents (N = 68) were 15.38 years old on average (SD = 1.05, range = 13, 17), predominantly male (60.3%) and nearly exclusively Hispanic/Latino (94.1%). Results: Results indicated that although more psychosocially mature adolescents reported greater adherence to the CDC guidelines than less psychosocially mature adolescents, the association between psychosocial maturity and adherence was fully mediated by how important adolescents felt it was to follow the guidelines. Specifically, greater perceived importance was associated with greater adherence to the guidelines. Conclusions: The current study found that more psychosocially mature adolescents adhere to CDC's safety guidelines better than less psychosocially mature adolescents because they are more likely to view the guidelines as important. Information that attempts to increase adolescent adherence to the guidelines should therefore emphasize not only that following the guidelines is important, but why following the guidelines is so important. Less psychosocially mature adolescents may benefit most from interventions efforts and targeted messages regarding the importance of following the CDC's guidelines, as more psychosocially mature adolescents already recognize this importance. Aims: Digital mental health services may increase the accessibility and affordability of mental health treatments. However, client dropout a low use is often reported. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the structural validity of the e‐Therapy Attitudes and Process (eTAP) questionnaire, as a theoretically based (theory of planned behavior) tool for understanding ongoing client engagement intentions with digital mental health treatments. The possible role of eHealth literacy in predicting behavioral intentions to use digital mental health treatments was also examined. Methods: Participants were 244 Australian‐based adults aged between 18 and 56 years, who were currently using a digital mental health tool. Data were collected via online survey. Results: Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted, with good model fit obtained following two theoretically supported modifications. Moderated hierarchical regression supported the utility of the theory of planned behavior in predicting behavioral intentions, with attitudes emerging as a strong and consistent individual predictor. No support was found for the moderating role or individual significance of eHealth literacy. Conclusions: These findings support the clinical and research use of the eTAP as a theory‐based measure to understand client engagement in digital mental health interventions. The Australian Government will set the direction for addressing road safety over the next decade with its 2021–2030 National Road Safety Strategy. This road map will detail objectives and goals agreed upon by all Australian states and territories. Similar to previous national strategies, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) Australians are a high priority population. Indigenous Australians are over‐represented in serious injury and fatal road crashes, with alcohol a leading factor. Therapeutic and educational programs are a major strategy among the suite of measures designed to reduce and prevent drink driving in Australia. The release of this new strategy provides a timely opportunity to reflect on what is known about drink driving among Indigenous Australians and to consider the suitability of existing therapeutic and educational drink driving programs for Indigenous Australian contexts. Here, we summarise factors that contribute to drink driving in this population and identify outstanding knowledge gaps. Then, we present an overview of drink driving programs available for Indigenous Australians along with suggestions for why tailored programs are needed to suit local contexts. The response to address drink driving among Indigenous Australians has been fragmented Australia‐wide. A coordinated national response, with ongoing monitoring and evaluation, would improve policy effectiveness and inform more efficient allocation of resources. Approaches to evaluate comments based on whether they increase code comprehensibility for software maintenance tasks are important, but largely missing. We propose CommentProbe for automated classification and quality evaluation of code comments of C codebases based on how they can help to understand existing code. We conduct surveys and document developers' perceptions on the type of comments that prove useful to maintaining software in the form of comment categories. A total of 20,206 comments have been collected from open‐source Github projects and annotated with assistance from industry experts. We develop features to semantically analyze comments to locate concepts related to categories of usefulness. Additionally, features based on code and comment correlation are designed to infer whether the comment is also consistent and not superfluous. Using neural networks, comments are classified as useful, partially useful, and not useful with precision and recall scores of 86.27% and 86.42%, respectively. The proposed framework for comment quality evaluation incorporates industry practices and adds significant value to companies wanting to formulate better code commenting strategies. The viability of wild bee populations and the pollination services that they provide are driven by the availability of food resources during their activity period and within the surroundings of their nesting sites. Changes in climate and land use influence the availability of these resources and are major threats to declining bee populations. Because wild bees may be vulnerable to interactions between these threats, spatially explicit models of population dynamics that capture how bee populations jointly respond to land use at a landscape scale and weather are needed. Here, we developed a spatially and temporally explicit theoretical model of wild bee populations aiming for a middle ground between the existing mapping of visitation rates using foraging equations and more refined agent‐based modeling. The model is developed for Bombus sp. and captures within‐season colony dynamics. The model describes mechanistically foraging at the colony level and temporal population dynamics for an average colony at the landscape level. Stages in population dynamics are temperature‐dependent triggered by a theoretical generalized seasonal progression, which can be informed by growing degree days. The purpose of the LandscapePhenoBee model is to evaluate the impact of system changes and within‐season variability in resources on bee population sizes and crop visitation rates. In a simulation study, we used the model to evaluate the impact of the shortage of food resources in the landscape arising from extreme drought events in different types of landscapes (ranging from different proportions of semi‐natural habitats and early and late flowering crops) on bumblebee populations. Objectives: Group psychotherapy holds considerable potential for cost‐effective treatment delivery. However, issues with client attendance can compromise the efficacy of such treatments. To date, client specific factors are amongst the most researched predictors of attendance in psychotherapy, with much less of a focus given to process factors, particularly in the group therapy context. This study aimed to determine which process factors influenced attendance in the context of a group therapy programme for adults with anxiety. It was hypothesized that (1) the working alliance and group cohesion would be moderately correlated, (2) both the working alliance and group cohesion would explain unique variance in session attendance, and (3) the working alliance would act as a moderator for attendance, when group cohesion was low. Design: The study utilized a within participants design. Methods: Participants were 91 adults (aged 18–74 years) who took part in a 9‐week, transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural group therapy programme for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Results: Working alliance and group cohesion were significantly, but only moderately correlated (rs ranging.41 to.55). Together, working alliance and group cohesion significantly predicted total session attendance (17.70% variance explained). Working alliance did not moderate the relationship between group cohesion and session attendance. Conclusions: The importance of individual and group processes in influencing group therapy engagement is highlighted, including the role of fostering bonds within the group and between clients and therapists. The Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Queensland Ambulance Service may detain and transport persons experiencing major disturbances in their mental capacity to an ED for urgent care. Queensland's new mental health legislation (March 2017) makes this legal intervention difficult to scrutinise. For a large non‐metropolitan region, QPS records for emergency examination orders (EEOs) and emergency examination authorities (EEAs) were compared with annual reports of Queensland's Director of Mental Health and Chief Psychiatrist. From 2009–2010 to March 2017, QPS‐registered EEOs totalled 12 903 while annual reports attributed 9441 to QPS (27% fewer). From March 2017 to 2019–2020, QPS‐registered EEAs totalled 6887. Annual reports declared 1803 EEAs in total for this period, without distinguishing those registered by QPS from the Queensland Ambulance Service. Past year proportions of EEOs, however, indicate perhaps ~1100 originated with QPS (84% fewer). The COVID‐19 pandemic has caused immense change and stress among adolescents. Yet, little is known about youths' concerns related to the COVID‐19 pandemic. This is particularly true among youth who have been highly impacted by the pandemic—namely, justice system‐involved youth, low‐income youth, and youth who consider themselves to be low status. Youth from the community, youth on probation, and incarcerated youth completed a survey describing their concerns related to COVID‐19 across three concern domains: economic, social concerns, and COVID‐19 itself. Results suggested that, with respect to economic concerns, incarcerated youth felt more concern about their ability to get a job if needed than youth on probation or community youth (accounting for gender and household income), and more concerned about food security (accounting for gender and subjective social status). With respect to social concerns, both incarcerated youth and youth on probation felt that the quality of their relationship with family members had decreased as a result of the pandemic, relative to community youth (accounting for gender and income), while incarcerated youth only felt that the quality of their friendships had decreased (accounting for gender and subjective social status). With respect to concerns about COVID‐19, no group differences were observed about getting sick or dying from COVID‐19, but low‐income youth regardless of justice system status were more concerned about dying of COVID‐19 than their affluent counterparts. Carbon (C) substrates are critical for regulating denitrification, a process that results in nitrous oxide (N2O) and dinitrogen (N2) emissions from soil. However, the impacts of C substrates on concomitant soil emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and N2O under varying soil types and soil water contents are not well studied. Three repacked Pallic grassland soils, varying in texture and phosphorus (P) status, containing NO3−‐15N were held at three levels of matric potential (ψ, −3, −5 and −7 kPa), while receiving daily substrate additions (acetate, glucose and water control) for 14 days. The CO2 and N2O emissions were measured daily. Additionally, the N2O:(N2 + N2O) ratios were determined using 15N on days 3 and 14. Results showed that N2O emissions increased exponentially as soil gas diffusivity declined, and N2O peak emissions were higher with glucose than with acetate addition, with a range (± standard deviation) of 0.1 ± 0.0 to 42.7 ± 2.1 mg N m−2 h−1. The highest cumulative N2O emission (2.5 ± 0.2 g N m−2) was measured following glucose addition with a soil ψ of −3 kPa. In comparison with added glucose, acetate resulted in a twofold increase in N2 emissions in soils with relatively low gas diffusivities. The N2O:(N2O + N2) emissions ratios varied with substrate (glucose, 0.91; acetate, 0.81) on day 3, and had declined by day 14 under substrate addition (≤0.10). Cumulative CO2 emissions were enhanced with increasing soil gas diffusivity and were higher for soils amended with glucose (ranging from 22.5 ± 1.3 to 36.6 ± 1.8, g C m−2) than for those amended with acetate. Collectively, the results demonstrate that the increase of N2O, N2 and CO2 emissions and changes in the N2O:(N2 + N2O) ratio vary over time in response to C substrate type and soil gas diffusivity. The hormone melatonin is synthesized from serotonin by two enzymatic reactions (AANAT and ASMT/HIOMT) in the pineal gland following a circadian rhythm with low levels during the day and high levels at night. The robust nightly peak of melatonin secretion is an output signal of the circadian clock to the whole organism. However, so far the regulatory roles of endogenous melatonin in mammalian biological rhythms and physiology processes are poorly understood. Here, we establish congenic mouse lines (>N10 generations) that are proficient or deficient in melatonin synthesis (AH+/+ or AH−/− mice, respectively) on the C57BL/6J genetic background by crossing melatonin‐proficient MSM/Ms with C57BL/6J. AH+/+ mice displayed robust nightly peak of melatonin secretion and had significantly higher levels of pineal and plasma melatonin vs AH−/− mice. Using this mice model, we investigated the role of endogenous melatonin in regulating multiple biological rhythms, physiological processes, and rhythmic behaviors. In the melatonin‐proficient (AH+/+) mice, the rate of re‐entrainment of wheel‐running activity was accelerated following a 6‐hour phase advance of dark onset when comparted with AH−/− mice, suggesting a role of endogenous melatonin in facilitating clock adjustment. Further in the AH+/+ mice, there was a significant decrease in body weight, gonadal weight and reproductive performance, and a significant increase in daily torpor (a hypothermic and hypometabolic state lasting only hours during adverse conditions). Endogenous melatonin, however, had no effect in the modulation of the diurnal rhythm of 2‐[125I]‐iodomelatonin receptor expression in the SCN, free‐running wheel behavior in constant darkness, life span, spontaneous homecage behaviors, and various types of social‐emotional behaviors. The findings also shed light on the role of endogenous melatonin in mice domestication and provide new insights into melatonin's action in reducing energy expenditure during a food shortage. In summary, the congenic mice model generated in this study offers a significant advantage toward understanding of the role of endogenous melatonin in regulating melatonin receptor‐mediated rhythm behaviors and physiological functions. Marine reserves are a key tool for the conservation of marine biodiversity, yet only ~2.5% of the world's oceans are protected. The integration of marine reserves into connected networks representing all habitats has been encouraged by international agreements, yet the benefits of this design has not been tested empirically. Australia has one of the largest systems of marine reserves, providing a rare opportunity to assess how connectivity influences conservation success. An Australia‐wide dataset was collected using baited remote underwater video systems deployed across a depth range from 0 to 100 m to assess the effectiveness of marine reserves for protecting teleosts subject to commercial and recreational fishing. A meta‐analytical comparison of 73 fished species within 91 marine reserves found that, on average, marine reserves had 28% greater abundance and 53% greater biomass of fished species compared to adjacent areas open to fishing. However, benefits of protection were not observed across all reserves (heterogeneity), so full subsets generalized additive modelling was used to consider factors that influence marine reserve effectiveness, including distance‐based and ecological metrics of connectivity among reserves. Our results suggest that increased connectivity and depth improve the aforementioned marine reserve benefits and that these factors should be considered to optimize such benefits over time. We provide important guidance on factors to consider when implementing marine reserves for the purpose of increasing the abundance and size of fished species, given the expected increase in coverage globally. We show that marine reserves that are highly protected (no‐take) and designed to optimize connectivity, size and depth range can provide an effective conservation strategy for fished species in temperate and tropical waters within an overarching marine biodiversity conservation framework. The dialkyl malonate derived 1,3‐diphosphines R2C(CH2PPh2)2 (R=a, Me; b, Et; c, n‐Bu; d, n‐Dec; e, Bn; f, p‐tolCH2) are combined with (p‐tol3P)2PtCl2 or trans‐(p‐tol3P)2Pt((C≡C)2H)2 to give the chelates cis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)PtCl2 (2 a–f, 94–69 %) or cis‐(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)Pt((C≡C)2H)2 (3 a–f, 97–54 %). Complexes 3 a–d are also available from 2 a–d and excess 1,3‐butadiyne in the presence of CuI (cat.) and excess HNEt2 (87–65 %). Under similar conditions, 2 and 3 react to give the title compounds [(R2C(CH2PPh2)2)[Pt(C≡C)2]4 (4 a–f; 89–14 % (64 % avg)), from which ammonium salts such as the co‐product [H2NEt2]+ Cl− are challenging to remove. Crystal structures of 4 a,b show skew rhombus as opposed to square Pt4 geometries. The NMR and IR properties of 4 a–f are similar to those of mono‐ or diplatinum model compounds. However, cyclic voltammetry gives only irreversible oxidations. As compared to mono‐platinum or Pt(C≡C)2Pt species, the UV‐visible spectra show much more intense and red‐shifted bands. Time dependent DFT calculations define the transitions and principal orbitals involved. Electrostatic potential surface maps reveal strongly negative Pt4C16 cores that likely facilitate ammonium cation binding. This closing commentary to the special section presents an overview of the Queensland Alcohol‐related violence and Night‐Time Economy Monitoring evaluation findings in comparison to those from other jurisdictions where similar interventions have been implemented (such as Sydney and Newcastle), and especially with previous studies that have used similar evaluation methodologies, such as the Dealing with Alcohol and the Night‐Time Economy study. Overall, the articles documented promising reductions in alcohol‐related harm, building on the existing evidence base for multi‐pronged interventions in entertainment districts. Importantly, this is the first comprehensive investigation to also look at impacts on nightlife‐related business and findings demonstrated, that there were improvements for many businesses. There are substantial policy implications for Queensland and other jurisdictions (nationally and globally) wanting to reduce late night alcohol‐related harm in entertainment districts. This commentary introduces the special section on the outcomes of the Queensland Alcohol‐related violence and Night‐time Economy Monitoring project and outlines the political and policy context of the interventions put in place under the Queensland government's Tackling Alcohol‐Fuelled Violence strategy. The development of the strategy was informed by alcohol policy initiatives trialled in other major Australian cities over the past two decades. The articles in this special section examine the impact of the Tackling Alcohol‐Fuelled Violence policy stages on alcohol‐related harms and local economies across selected entertainment precincts (Safe Night Precincts). A rich array of data were utilised, including administrative health and justice data, data reflective of nightlife trading (i.e. foot traffic data, ID scanner data and live music performances) and street surveys. Findings have implications for research, policy and practice and demonstrate the need for comprehensive evaluations that can accommodate the complexities of modern alcohol policy in Australia. Introduction and Aims: In July 2016, the Queensland government introduced the Tackling Alcohol‐Fuelled Violence policy, with some amendments over the subsequent 12 months. Key measures included restricting alcohol sales to 3 am in safe night precincts (SNPs), limiting the annual number of extended trading permits (i.e. trading until 5 am) and introducing mandatory networked identification scanners. We examined the policy impact on the number of serious assaults across all combined SNPs and in five major SNPs: Fortitude Valley, Cairns, Surfers Paradise, Toowoomba and Townsville. Design and Methods: Using police data (July 2009–June 2019), we examined the impact of the policy on serious assaults during high‐alcohol hours (high‐alcohol hours; 8 pm–6 am, Friday and Saturday), employing time series methods. Results: Across all SNPs there was no significant change in the number of serious assaults during overall high‐alcohol hours, but a significant 49% decrease in the monthly number of serious assaults between 3 am and 6 am on Friday/Saturday. A significant decrease in the monthly count of serious assaults during high‐alcohol hours and specifically 3 am–6 am on Friday/Saturday was evident in Fortitude Valley SNP (52%), and during high‐alcohol hours in Toowoomba SNP (43%). Discussion and Conclusions: Although results were mixed, there was evidence of some promising reductions in alcohol‐related violence in SNPs. It is likely that factors such as extended trading permits (venues not closing at 3 am), continued drinking in some venues and 24‐h trading in casinos have reduced the potential impacts seen elsewhere. To study the dynamics of infection processes, it is common to manually enumerate imaging‐based infection assays. However, manual counting of events from imaging data is biased, error‐prone and a laborious task. We recently presented HRMAn (Host Response to Microbe Analysis), an automated image analysis program using state‐of‐the‐art machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to analyse pathogen growth and host defence behaviour. With HRMAn, we can quantify intracellular infection by pathogens such as Toxoplasma gondii and Salmonella in a variety of cell types in an unbiased and highly reproducible manner, measuring multiple parameters including pathogen growth, pathogen killing and activation of host cell defences. Since HRMAn is based on the KNIME Analytics platform, it can easily be adapted to work with other pathogens and produce more readouts from quantitative imaging data. Here we showcase improvements to HRMAn resulting in the release of HRMAn 2.0 and new applications of HRMAn 2.0 for the analysis of host–pathogen interactions using the established pathogen T. gondii and further extend it for use with the bacterial pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis and the fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. Introduction: Transitions of care are a major contributing factor to medication‐related adverse events in people with dementia. There is limited knowledge on how well guidance on medication management is provided to carers at hospital discharge, and there is no tool that comprehensively reports on medication management guidance at discharge. The study aim was to evaluate carers' experiences of medication management guidance for people with dementia at hospital discharge and explore the underlying factors of the CATCH tool as preliminary validation of the tool. Methods: A cross‐sectional survey of the CATCH tool was distributed across Australia between March and November 2022. The CATCH tool contained 30 Likert‐type items and three dichotomous (yes/no) items. The results of the survey were analysed descriptively, and exploratory factor and regression analyses were performed. Results: A total of 185 survey responses were completed (completion rate 66.8%). Most respondents were informal carers (n = 116, 62.7%), and were predominantly provided medication management guidance on the day of discharge (n = 79, 42.7%). One‐third (n = 61, 33.0%) responded that medication management guidance could be improved. Regarding the safe use of medications, respondents felt information was not well provided on: medications that may interact with each other (n = 30, 17.6%), possible side‐effects of medications (n = 28,16.1%), and medications that might act on the brain (n = 27, 15.8%). Thirty respondents (17.8%) reported that they were not included in decisions by hospital staff about medications for people with dementia. The CATCH tool contained two factors: 1) person‐centred guidance in the safe use of medications during and after discharge; and 2) support of carers in medication management. Internal consistency of all factors were acceptable with Cronbach's alpha (>0.8). The carer reported measure of how medication management guidance is provided is positively related to their confidence in management of medications post‐discharge and satisfaction (p< 0.05 for both). Conclusion: Opportunities to improve delivery of person‐focused medication management guidance involve provision of information on the safe use of medications to the carer and engagement in medication decisions. Background: People with dementia are more likely to experience medication‐related harm than people without dementia at transitions of care. However, medication management guidance is often not provided to people with dementia and carers during hospitalisation. We aimed to co‐design novel medication management resources for people with dementia and carers during hospitalisation. Method: This is a mixed‐methods study involving five stages: i) generate resource topics by content analysing a scoping review and a previous qualitative study exploring carers' medication management experiences at discharge; ii) develop the first version of the resources; iii) obtain input from dementia expert advisory panels; iv) undertake focus groups with people with dementia, carers, and healthcare professionals; v) complete quantitative analysis of readability, understandability and actionability, and suitability of the resources through validated tools. Focus groups were content analysed to explore participants' perceptions of the resources' topics, content, and layout, and how well they meet their needs. The resources were edited during each stage, a graphic designer modified the layout, and final copies produced. Result: We derived six resource topics including: participating in shared decision‐making; identifying common medications that may affect cognition; and describing hospital processes and the person's role. The advisory panels recommended introducing informed consent and the discharge summary and medications list in the resources. Two focus groups have been conducted with carers (n = 4) and healthcare professionals (n = 3). Participants felt the topics generated would be useful and beneficial. They suggested: modifying the title to appeal to all supporters of someone with dementia (not just formal carers); listing more medications that may affect cognition; and limiting medical terminology. They recommended providing the resources at admission for referral throughout the hospital stay. The resources were of an adequate reading level, understandable, actionable, and suitable. Conclusion: Resources containing information on shared decision‐making, informed consent, medications that may affect cognition, and support to improve involvement in medication decisions would be valuable to people with dementia, carers, and healthcare professionals. The next stages are to conduct user‐testing on how well key information can be located and understood and evaluate participants' knowledge and engagement in shared decision‐making after using the resources. Wild bee populations are threatened by current agricultural practices in many parts of the world, which may put pollination services and crop yields at risk. Loss of pollination services can potentially be predicted by models that link bee abundances with landscape‐scale land‐use, but there is little knowledge on the degree to which these statistical models are transferable across time and space. This study assesses the transferability of models for wild bee abundance in a mass‐flowering crop across space (from one region to another) and across time (from one year to another). The models used existing data on bumblebee and solitary bee abundance in winter oilseed rape fields, together with high‐resolution land‐use crop‐cover and semi‐natural habitats data, from studies conducted in five different regions located in four countries (Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and the UK), in three different years (2011, 2012, 2013). We developed a hierarchical model combining all studies and evaluated the transferability using cross‐validation. We found that both the landscape‐scale cover of mass‐flowering crops and permanent semi‐natural habitats, including grasslands and forests, are important drivers of wild bee abundance in all regions. However, while the negative effect of increasing mass‐flowering crops on the density of the pollinators is consistent between studies, the direction of the effect of semi‐natural habitat is variable between studies. The transferability of these statistical models is limited, especially across regions, but also across time. Our study demonstrates the limits of using statistical models in conjunction with widely available land‐use crop‐cover classes for extrapolating pollinator density across years and regions, likely in part because input variables such as cover of semi‐natural habitats poorly capture variability in pollinator resources between regions and years.
