Background: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inherited disease that affects multiple organ systems including bone and teeth. Limited knowledge exists on dental and oral health in patients with adult‐onset HPP (aHPP). Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate oro‐dental characteristics in patients with aHPP compared to healthy controls. Methods: This case‐control study included 20 patients with aHPP compared to 31 healthy controls. Oro‐dental manifestations were examined by standardised interviews, clinical examinations as well as radiological registrations on panoramic radiograph (OP) and cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Results: The subjective experience of tooth fractures (p = 0.010), caries in permanent teeth (p = 0.032) and early loss of permanent teeth (p = 0.002) was significantly higher in patients with aHPP compared to the controls. In the aHPP group, the presence of specific teeth (p ≤ 0.045) and attrition of 11 were significantly lower (p = 0.012) compared to the controls. Opacity of a few teeth (p ≤ 0.049), presence of denticles (p = 0.024), the distance between the enamel–cement junction (CEJ) and the marginal bone level at specific sites (p ≤ 0.021) and crown height of 11 (p = 0.017) were significantly higher in patients with aHPP than in healthy controls. Conclusion: The results indicate that patients with aHPP have a subjective experience of having poorer dental health. Loss of permanent teeth, less attrition, tooth opacities, denticles and larger distance between CEJ and marginal bone level are possible oro‐dental findings in patients with aHPP. Background and Aim: The study 'Periodontitis and Its Relation to Coronary Artery Disease' (PAROKRANK) reported an association between periodontitis (PD) and the first myocardial infarction (MI). This follow‐up study aims to test the hypothesis that those with PD—compared to periodontally healthy individuals—are at increased risk for cardiovascular (CV) events and death. Methods: A total of 1587 participants (age <75 years; females 19%) had a dental examination including panoramic radiographs between 2010 and 2014. PD was categorized as healthy (≥80% alveolar bone height), mild/moderate (79%–66%) or severe (<66%). A composite CV event (first of all‐cause death, non‐fatal MI or stroke and hospitalization following to heart failure) was investigated during a mean follow‐up period of 9.9 years (range 0.2–12.5 years). Participants were divided into two groups: those with and without PD. The primary event rate, stratified by periodontal status at baseline, was calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method and Cox regression. Results: The number of events was 187 in the 985 periodontally healthy participants (19%) and 174 in the 602 participants with PD (29%; p < 0.0001). Those with PD had a higher likelihood for a future event (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.26; 95% CI: 1.01–1.57; p = 0.038), following adjustment for age, smoking and diabetes. Conclusion: The PAROKRANK follow‐up revealed that CV events were more common among participants with PD, which supports the assumption that there might be a direct relation between PD and CV disease. Background: The use of panoramic radiography (PR) is a complementary examination to aid in the diagnosis of cases in paediatric dentistry. The lack of specific protocols for these devices, however, can result in high doses of radiation, affecting critical organs such as the thyroid. Aim: To evaluate the discrepancies in ionizing radiation received by the thyroid during PR examinations using anthropomorphic paediatric simulators built from computed tomography images. Design: Two anthropomorphic paediatric phantoms were printed and used, representing children aged 6 and 11 years, with an opening in the thyroid region for the insertion of dosimetric radiographic films. The simulators were subjected to different pre‐existing protocols in the PR devices. The radiographic films were processed and analysed using a luxmeter. Results: The radiation dose to the thyroid was higher in the 6‐year‐old phantom than in the 11‐year‐old phantom, for given exposure factors. In addition, there was an increase in dose in children's protocols compared with small adult protocols. Conclusion: Therefore, companies that develop PR equipment must develop child protocols for separate age groups that will consequently reduce the radiation dose in children, especially in their critical organs. Aim: To identify serum‐ and salivary‐derived inflammatory biomarkers of periodontitis progression and determine their response to non‐surgical treatment. Materials and Methods: Periodontally healthy (H; n = 113) and periodontitis patients (P; n = 302) were monitored bi‐monthly for 1 year without therapy. Periodontitis patients were re‐examined 6 months after non‐surgical periodontal therapy (NSPT). Participants were classified according to disease progression: P0 (no sites progressed; P1: 1–2 sites progressed; P2: 3 or more sites progressed). Ten salivary and five serum biomarkers were measured using Luminex. Log‐transformed levels were compared over time according to baseline diagnosis, progression trajectory and after NSPT. Significant differences were sought using linear mixed models. Results: P2 presented higher levels (p <.05) of salivary IFNγ, IL‐6, VEGF, IL‐1β, MMP‐8, IL‐10 and OPG over time. Serum analytes were not associated with progression. NSPT led to clinical improvement and significant reduction of IFNγ, IL‐6, IL‐8, IL‐1β, MMP‐8, IL‐10, OPG and MMP‐9 in saliva and of CRP, MMP‐8, MMP‐9 and MPO in serum. Conclusions: Periodontitis progression results from a sustained pro‐inflammatory milieu that is reflected in salivary biomarkers, but less so in serum, likely because of the limited amount of progression per patient. Objectives: Alveolar bone loss (ABL) and periodontal lesions are common diseases that have an undeniable effect on teeth maintenance and health. Current diagnostic methods include probing, intraoral radiography, and panoramic radiography; each has its limitations. In this study, we aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of panoramic radiography in the diagnosis of interdental ABL. Material and Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, panoramic and cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) images from 80 patients were collected from the archives of an oral and maxillofacial radiology center. The amount of ABL was obtained by measuring the distance from the Cemento‐Enamel Junction (CEJ) to the alveolar bone crest on both panoramic and CBCT images. Patients were divided into healthy (ABL ≤ 2 mm) and diseased (2 mm < ABL) groups in terms of periodontal disease. Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the average ABL in the premolar, maxillary molar, and mandibular molar areas between the two techniques. However, in other areas, the ABL size was significantly lower in the panoramic view (p < 0.05). Also, the panoramic technique correctly recognized 89.1% of normal and 88.4% of ABL cases. The overall accuracy of panoramic radiography in the diagnosis of ABL was 85%, indicating the good accuracy of this technique. In maxilla, the highest diagnostic accuracy of the panoramic technique was in the molars, and the lowest was in the incisors. In the mandible, the highest and lowest diagnostic accuracy of the panoramic technique was related to molars and premolars, respectively. According to the kappa statistic, there was a significant good to very good agreement between the two types of techniques in all maxillary areas (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Panoramic radiography is accurate in showing ABL. Measuring ABL in the posterior mandibular areas in panoramic radiographs is quite reliable; however, in general, digital panoramic radiography shows less ABL than the actual amount. Background: The present systematic review evaluated clinical and radiographic features and treatment outcomes of peri‐implantitis‐induced medication‐related osteonecrosis of the jaws (Pi‐MRONJ). Materials and Methods: Literature search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane CENTRAL, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Studies reporting Pi‐MRONJ were included. No time restrictions were applied. Results: In total, 571 articles were retrieved, and 24 articles were included in the final review. Study population consisted of 111 patients (70% pharmacologically treated for osteoporosis and 30% for oncologic disease). Pi‐MRONJ was characterized by pain, bone exposure and suppuration, and involved a single implant in 55 cases, two implants in 37 cases, three implants in 10 cases, and more than four implants in nine cases. Most of the lesions were assigned Stage II and III. MRONJ developed on average 46.5 ± 33.2 months following implant placement. Sixty‐one lesions were surgically treated with implant removal and debridement of the surrounding necrotic bone. Complete wound healing was observed in 85% of cases. Conclusions: The presence of dental implants in patients treated with antiresorptive drugs should be considered as a potential risk factor for MRONJ onset. In cases of periimplantitis with delayed wound healing following nonsurgical therapy, the clinician should rule out the presence of Pi‐MRONJ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Panoramic ultrasound (US) is an extended field‐of‐view (EFOV) imaging technique that enables visualization of large‐scale skeletal muscles. This technique has previously been found to produce valid and reliable quantifications of muscle morphology in primarily young male subjects. The purpose was to investigate the intra‐rater between‐session test–retest reliability of panoramic US imaging for determining vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) cross‐sectional area (mCSA) in healthy middle‐aged to elderly adults. In this cross‐sectional study, axial panoramic US images of the RF and VL muscles were captured in 23 healthy females and males aged 47 to 78. Assessed across two sessions 3–7 days apart, intra‐rater reliability was evaluated by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC3,2), within‐subject coefficient of variation CVw−s$$ \left({\mathrm{CV}}_{\mathrm{w}-\mathrm{s}}\right) $$, standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal detectable change (MDC). Mean mCSA for RF was mean ± SD, 7.5 ± 2.7 cm2 on both test days, with a numeric difference of 0.8%. Mean VL mCSA was 20.6 ± 6.6 cm2 and 20.5 ± 6.5 cm2 on test days 1 and 2, respectively. Test–retest ICC were: 0.997 (95% CI: 0.994–0.999) for RF and 0.995 (95% CI: 0.989–0.998) for VL. CVw−s$$ {\mathrm{CV}}_{\mathrm{w}-\mathrm{s}} $$ was 2.6% for RF and 2.4% for VL. SEM was 0.2 cm2 for RF and 0.5 cm2 for VL. MDC was 0.4 cm2 for RF and 1.3 cm2 for VL. In conclusion, panoramic EFOV US is a highly reliable imaging technique for assessing RF and VL mCSA in middle‐aged and elderly adults. Background: Limited data exist on the mid‐ to long‐term masticatory capacity of mandibular overdenture (IOD) wearers, particularly regarding the use of posterior implants to retention. Objectives: To periodically evaluate mastication of IOD wearers, comparing the effectiveness of two to four implants to retain the prosthesis. Methods: In a randomised controlled clinical trial, 20 complete edentulous patients (14 women), aged 51–84 years (mean age 69.1 ± 9.6), received new bimaxillary complete dentures (CD). After adaptation, baseline measurements of masticatory performance (X50) and swallowing threshold were conducted using the sieving method. Patients were then randomly assigned to groups: control (two intra‐foraminal regular implants) and experimental (two intra‐foraminal regular implants and two extra‐short posterior implants) (n = 10 each). After 4 months, implants were splinted, and a new mandibular IOD was fabricated with bar/clip retention. Mastication was reassessed after 6, 12, and 48 months, and data analysed with repeated measures ANOVA and Sidak's post hoc (α = 0.05). Results: Despite a loss of two patients per group, masticatory performance significantly improved after mandibular IOD installation (p =.031) in both groups (p =.670). A second improvement was observed after 6 months (p =.027), with no subsequent changes (p >.05). Swallowing threshold improvements were noted with IOD, and no discernible differences between groups were observed (p >.05). Conclusion: Masticatory function significantly improved after mandibular IOD installation, with the number of implants demonstrating minimal influence. Clinical Trial Registration: The present study was not registered in a public database, as mandated. It is important to note that the recommendation for registration was initiated in 2017 by the Committee of Medical Journal Editors, while patient inclusion in the research took place in 2016. Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) based on deep learning (DL) algorithms has shown promise in enhancing the speed and accuracy of dental anomaly detection in paediatric dentistry. Aim: This systematic review aimed to investigate the performance of AI systems in identifying dental anomalies in paediatric dentistry and compare it with human performance. Design: A systematic search of Scopus, PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted from 2012 to 2022. Inclusion criteria were based on problem/patient/population, intervention/indicator, comparison and outcome scheme and specific keywords related to AI, DL, paediatric dentistry, dental anomalies, supernumerary and mesiodens. Six of 3918 initial pool articles were included, assessing nine DL sub‐systems that used panoramic radiographs or cone‐beam computed tomography. Article quality was assessed using QUADAS‐2. Results: Artificial intelligence systems based on DL algorithms showed promising potential in enhancing the speed and accuracy of dental anomaly detection, with an average of 85.38% accuracy and 86.61% sensitivity. Human performance, however, outperformed AI systems, achieving 95% accuracy and 99% sensitivity. Limitations included a limited number of articles and data heterogeneity. Conclusion: The potential of AI systems employing DL algorithms is highlighted in detecting dental anomalies in paediatric dentistry. Background: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a potentially serious osteopathic disorder associated with coalescing ossifications of the anterior vertebrae and may be concomitant with a constellation of symptomatology and systemic comorbidities. There is limited dental literature describing this finding on panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Case presentations: Two case reports of DISH are provided. One patient manifested extensive ossifications along the cervical vertebrae and consequent episodes of dysphagia and hoarseness. The other affected patient's cervical ossification was found at an earlier stage of formation and without symptomatology. Panoramic radiography, cervical spine radiography, and CBCT examinations have been provided. Conclusion: Attending dental healthcare practitioners should carefully evaluate all areas of interest and surrounding fields of view when taking panoramic radiographs and CBCT scans for manifestations of DISH and other potential disorders of the cervical vertebrae. A suspected radiologic finding of DISH should prompt timely referral for comprehensive medical assessment to mitigate neurologic deficits and other comorbidities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The purpose of this systematic review (SR) is to gather evidence on the use of machine learning (ML) models in the diagnosis of intraosseous lesions in gnathic bones and to analyze the reliability, impact, and usefulness of such models. This SR was performed in accordance with the PRISMA 2022 guidelines and was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42022379298). Methods: The acronym PICOS was used to structure the inquiry‐focused review question "Is Artificial Intelligence reliable for the diagnosis of intraosseous lesions in gnathic bones?" The literature search was conducted in various electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Lilacs, IEEE Xplore, and Gray Literature (Google Scholar and ProQuest). Risk of bias assessment was performed using PROBAST, and the results were synthesized by considering the task and sampling strategy of the dataset. Results: Twenty‐six studies were included (21 146 radiographic images). Ameloblastomas, odontogenic keratocysts, dentigerous cysts, and periapical cysts were the most frequently investigated lesions. According to TRIPOD, most studies were classified as type 2 (randomly divided). The F1 score was presented in only 13 studies, which provided the metrics for 20 trials, with a mean of 0.71 (±0.25). Conclusion: There is no conclusive evidence to support the usefulness of ML‐based models in the detection, segmentation, and classification of intraosseous lesions in gnathic bones for routine clinical application. The lack of detail about data sampling, the lack of a comprehensive set of metrics for training and validation, and the absence of external testing limit experiments and hinder proper evaluation of model performance. Background and Aim: Dental caries is largely preventable, yet an important global health issue. Numerous systematic reviews have summarized the efficacy of artificial intelligence (AI) models for the diagnosis and detection of dental caries. Therefore, this umbrella review aimed to synthesize the results of systematic reviews on the application and effectiveness of AI models in diagnosing and detecting dental caries. Methods: MEDLINE/PubMed, IEEE Explore, Embase, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched to retrieve studies. Two authors independently screened the articles based on eligibility criteria and then, appraised the included articles. The findings are summarized in tabulation form and discussed using the narrative method. Result: A total of 1249 entries were identified out of which 7 were finally included. The most often employed AI algorithms were the multilayer perceptron, support vector machine (SVM), and neural networks. The algorithms were built to perform the segmentation, classification, caries detection, diagnosis, and caries prediction from several sources, including periapical radiographs, panoramic radiographs, smartphone images, bitewing radiographs, near‐infrared light transillumination images, and so forth. Convoluted neural networks (CNN) demonstrated high sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve in the caries detection, segmentation, and classification tests. Notably, AI in conjunction with periapical and panoramic radiography images yielded better accuracy in detecting and diagnosing dental caries. Conclusion: AI models, especially convolutional neural network (CNN)‐based models, have an enormous amount of potential for accurate, objective dental caries diagnosis and detection. Objectives: To determine the genetic effects of panoramic radiography on the epithelial cells of the buccal mucosa by examining the micronucleus formation in these cells. Materials and Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, exfoliative cytology samples were prepared from the buccal mucosa of 36 patients immediately before and 10 days after panoramic radiography. The samples were prepared using liquid‐based cytology with Papanicolaou staining. The slides were simultaneously evaluated by two expert pathologists and the ratio of the number of cells with micronuclei to the total number of cells on the slide was reported as a percentage. Data analysis was done using paired‐samples T test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and covariance analysis (α = 0.05). Results: The study sample consisted of 24 (66.67%) males and 12 females (33.33%) with a mean (SD) age of 27.36 (8.19) years. The frequency of cells with micronucleus before and after panoramic radiography was not statistically different (p = 0.468). Additionally, the frequency of micronucleated cells was not correlated with age (p = 0.737) and sex (p = 0.211). Conclusion: Panoramic exposure slightly increased the frequency of cells with micronucleus in epithelial cells of the buccal mucosa. However, this increase was not statistically significant. Background: The stage of tooth formation is one of the most reliable indicators for predicting a patient's developmental age by radiographs. This study compared the accuracy of three distinct dental age estimation methods (Demirjian, Nolla, and Willems) in children aged 3–17 in the northern Iranian population. Methods: This cross‐sectional study examined panoramic radiographs of 434 children aged 3–17 from Mazandaran Province, Iran, who had teeth 31–37 present on the left mandible. This study employed the Demirjian, Nolla, and Willems methods to estimate the dental age of the sample and compare it with the chronological age. The data were analyzed using SPSS v16. A paired t‐test was used to compare chronological and dental ages. The Pearson correlation was used to correlate the chronological and dental ages. The errors of different methods were compared using the Wilcoxon test. P values < 0.05 were considered significant for all tests except Wilcoxon. For Wilcoxon, a P value < 0.017 was considered significant. Results: The three methods presented differing mean estimated ages. The Demirjian method delivered the highest mean, and all three methods differed significantly when compared in pairs. The results showed that the Demirjian method overestimated chronological age by 0.25 years (P < 0.001) in girls and 0.09 years (P = 0.28) in boys. The Willems method underestimated chronological age by 0.05 years (P = 0.47) in girls and 0.12 years (P = 0.13) in boys. The Nolla method underestimated chronological age by 0.41 years (P < 0.001) in girls and 0.40 years (P < 0.001) in boys. The accuracy of each method varied with the patient's age. Conclusion: According to the findings, the Willems method outperformed the Demirjian method, and the Demirjian method exceeded the Nolla method for estimating dental age in Iranian children aged 3–17. Introduction: Medication‐related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is uncommon but can result in severe destruction of the jaw. This case–control study investigated the therapeutic effects of daily or weekly administration of teriparatide in the management of MRONJ using a cohort for osteonecrosis of the jaw. Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with MRONJ and consented to teriparatide administration were assigned either to a group of daily injection or of weekly injection and completed a 4‐week course of injection preoperatively and at least an 8‐week course postoperatively. The control group received either the intraoperative rhBMP treatment (CG_BMP) or no additional perioperative treatment (CG_noBMP). The state of MRONJ was evaluated 2 months (T1) and 6 months (T2) postoperatively for all participants. Results: Either group of daily injection (8.35 weeks ± 1.58; n = 17) or weekly injection (9.17 ± 3.79; n = 12) showed significantly faster healing than those of CG_BMP (14.40 ± 6.08; n = 25) or CG_noBMP (15.79 ± 9.79; n = 39). MRONJ was resolved completely in 24 out of 29 participants who completed the course of teriparatide injections, whereas 46.9% of CG showed delayed resolution. Multiple regression analysis indicated 7.50 times (95% CI, 1.77–31.82) more likelihood of complete resolution of MRONJ for participants with teriparatide injections. Objective: To identify radiographic findings suggestive of drug‐induced osteonecrosis and evaluate radiomorphometric patterns indicative of changes in bone mineral density in individuals transplanted for liver disorders using bisphosphonates. Study Design: The study group included panoramic x‐rays of liver transplant patients who are being monitored and who present a clinical status of osteoporosis and use bisphosphonates. The control group was made up of liver transplant patients who did not have osteoporosis. On panoramic radiographs, mental index (MI) and mandibular cortical index (MCI) and the presence of radiographic anomalies suggestive of osteonecrosis were evaluated. Results: There were significant statistical results when comparing the groups in relation to the decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) with MCI‐C3 (p = 0.036), however, there were none in relation to MI (p = 0.14). There were no valid statistical results when relating MCI (p = 0.94) and MI (p = 0.66) with reduced BMD and use of bisphosphonates. Conclusion: Liver transplant individuals using bisphosphonates present greater radiographic signs of bone sclerosis suggestive of a greater propensity to develop osteonecrosis of the jaw and an increased risk of presenting changes suggestive of reduced bone mineral density on panoramic radiographs when compared to liver transplant individuals not using bisphosphonates. Accurate diagnosis of periodontal and peri‐implant diseases relies significantly on radiographic examination, especially for assessing alveolar bone levels, bone defect morphology, and bone quality. This narrative review aimed to comprehensively outline the current state‐of‐the‐art in radiographic diagnosis of alveolar bone diseases, covering both two‐dimensional (2D) and three‐dimensional (3D) modalities. Additionally, this review explores recent technological advances in periodontal imaging diagnosis, focusing on their potential integration into clinical practice. Clinical probing and intraoral radiography, while crucial, encounter limitations in effectively assessing complex periodontal bone defects. Recognizing these challenges, 3D imaging modalities, such as cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), have been explored for a more comprehensive understanding of periodontal structures. The significance of the radiographic assessment approach is evidenced by its ability to offer an objective and standardized means of evaluating hard tissues, reducing variability associated with manual clinical measurements and contributing to a more precise diagnosis of periodontal health. However, clinicians should be aware of challenges related to CBCT imaging assessment, including beam‐hardening artifacts generated by the high‐density materials present in the field of view, which might affect image quality. Integration of digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence‐based tools in intraoral radiography software, the enhances the diagnostic process. The overarching recommendation is a judicious combination of CBCT and digital intraoral radiography for enhanced periodontal bone assessment. Therefore, it is crucial for clinicians to weigh the benefits against the risks associated with higher radiation exposure on a case‐by‐case basis, prioritizing patient safety and treatment outcomes. While peri‐implant mucositis relies solely on clinical parameters, radiological assessment becomes indispensable for diagnosing peri‐implantitis. Intraoral radiography, with its simplicity of application, low radiation exposure, and adequate representation of peri‐implant structures, stands out as the standard of care for both immediate and follow‐up assessments. Standardization by custom‐made radiologic splints allows for excellent comparability with previous images and allows for the determination of even small changes in contour and density of the peri‐implant bone. Furthermore, other radiographic modalities like panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) may provide useful features for specific patients and clinical cases while also showing innate limitations. Beyond the assessment of the marginal peri‐implant bone level as the crucial parameter of clinical relevance, radiologic assessment may reveal various other findings related to the prosthetic restoration itself, the precision of its fit to the implant, and the peri‐implant soft and hard tissues. Since such findings can be crucial for the assessment of peri‐implant health and the implants' prognosis, a systematic diagnostic evaluation pathway for a thorough assessment is recommended to extract all relevant information from radiologic imaging. Introduction: Panoramic radiography quality can be impaired by some errors such as positioning errors. Palatoglossal air space shadow error is one of the most common positioning errors and it is due to the tongue not sticking to the roof of the palate. Techniques used to deal with this error might help prevent unnecessary radiation to patients and save them time and money. The study aimed to investigate the effects of using celluloid matrix and edible tapes (fruit leather and chewing gum) on reducing the palatoglossal air space shadow error in panoramic imaging. Methods: In our study, 270 patients referred to the Department of Radiology were randomised into three groups: a control group, a celluloid matrix group and an edible tapes group. Before panoramic imaging, all patients were instructed to adhere their tongues to the roof of their mouths, with the distinction that for the celluloid matrix and edible tapes groups, patients were asked to place celluloid tapes, fruit leathers, or chewing gums on their tongues before doing so. The routine imaging process was then performed, and the results were compared across groups to evaluate the incidence of palatoglossal air space shadow error. Results: The number of error‐free images in each fruit leather, chewing gum and celluloid tape group were significantly higher than the control group (all cases P < 0.05). The chances of error‐free images in the fruit leather groups were the highest (9.57 times). The age (P = 0.136) and gender (P = 0.272) of patients had no significant effect on the results of interventions. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of an intraoral scanner with near‐infrared imaging (NIRI) feature in the diagnosis of interproximal caries and to compare it with the visual‐tactile method (VTM), bitewing radiography (BWR), and panoramic radiography (PR). Materials and Methods: Six hundred thirty‐nine interproximal surfaces (mesial‐distal) of posterior teeth from 22 volunteers were examined. Results were scored by VTM, BWR, PR, and NIRI. Lesions were scored as 0 for no‐caries, 1 for early‐enamel lesion (EEL), and 2 for lesions involving dentino–enamel junction (DEJ). McNemar, Kappa, and Fleis Kappa tests were used to evaluate the agreement levels. Pearson's Chi‐square test was used to determine the matching rates after validation. Results: A good level of agreement was observed between examination methods (Ƙ = 0.613; p < 0.001). In pairwise comparisons, a moderate agreement was seen between all the methods for lesions with DEJ involvement, while a statistically good agreement was observed between BWR and NIRI (Ƙ = 0.675; p < 0.001). As a result of validation, the accuracy of NIRI for molars was considered 85.2% and 75.7% for premolars in EELs, 85.2% for molars, and 70% for premolars regarding the lesions involving DEJ. Conclusions: Intraoral scanners with the NIRI feature may be used for diagnosing interproximal caries, especially for permanent molars. Objectives: The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) and periodontal disease (periodontitis) (PD) in Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in relation to their treatment phase. Subjects and Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, 188 patients with CKD were divided into two groups: patients without dialysis (WD group, n = 53) and patients on dialysis (DP group, n = 135). Panoramic radiographs were used to diagnose AP. The presence of periodontal disease was evaluated radiographically assessing alveolar bone loss. Student's t‐test, chi‐squared test, and logistic regression analysis were used to determine the significance of differences between groups. Results: In the WD group, 55% of patients had at least one tooth with AP, whereas in the DP group 67% had at least one tooth with AP (OR = 2.11; 95% CI = 1.09–4.08; p < 0.05). PD was more prevalent in the DP group (78%) than in the WD group (36%) (OR = 6.26; CI 95% = 3.13–12.52; p < 0.01). Conclusions: Oral infections are more prevalent in the advanced stages of CKD. Background: Amelogenesis Imperfecta (AI) is a disorder of tooth development characterized by abnormal enamel formation. In order to detect other dental and jawbone abnormalities that could be associated with AI, a retrospective and analytic study was conducted comparing panoramic radiographs of AI and non‐AI patients. Material and Methods: Digital panoramic radiographs of 60 AI and 60 non‐AI patients were examined. Abnormalities in dental number, size, shape, eruption, and in the shape of the dental arches were checked and blindly recorded by two experimented observers. Descriptive statistics using percentages and chi‐square test with.05 level of significance value was used. Results: Prevalence of supernumerary teeth, dental agenesis, microdontia, taurodontism, radicular dilacerations, dental inclusions, temporary teeth persistence, and pulp calcifications was significantly higher in AI patients compared to control patients. Prevalence of periapical images, cysts, and hypercementosis was lower in AI patients compared to control patients, with no statistically significant difference. A significant prevalence of mandibular hypoplasia was also noted in AI patients. Conclusion: In addition to enamel defect, panoramic radiography was useful in detecting other dental abnormalities and mandibular hypoplasia associated with AI and should therefore be systematically indicated for AI patients' care. Introduction: Poor oral hygiene can cause infections and inflammatory diseases. Data on its impact on outcome after lung transplantation (LuTX) is scarce. Most transplant centers have individual standards regarding dental care as there is no clinical guideline. This study's objective was to assess LuTX‐listed patient's dental status and determine its effect on postoperative outcome. Methods: Two hundred patients having undergone LuTX from 2014 to 2019 were selected. Collected data comprised LuTX‐indication, periodontal status, and number of carious teeth/fillings. A preoperative panoramic dental X‐ray and a dentist's consultative clarification were mandatory. Results: 63.5% had carious dental status, differing significantly regarding TX‐indication (p < 0.001; ILD: 41.7% vs. CF: 3.1% of all patients with carious teeth). Mean age at the time of LuTX differed significantly within these groups. Neither preoperative carious dental status nor periodontitis or bone loss deteriorated post‐LuTX survival significantly. No evidence was found that either resulted in a greater number of deaths related to an infectious etiology. Conclusion: This study shows that carious dental status, periodontitis, and bone loss do not affect post‐TX survival. However, literature indicates that they can cause systemic/pulmonary infections that deteriorate post‐LuTX survival. Objective: To identify local radiographic risk factors for Medication‐Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (MRONJ) in osteoporotic patients treated with antiresorptive drugs (ARD) and undergoing tooth extraction. Material and Methods: Patients were included in this retrospective, longitudinal, case‐control study, if having at least one administration of ARD, underwent tooth extraction(s), and had pre‐ and post‐operative panoramic radiographs. Additionally, a matched control group was selected. Three calibrated, blinded, and independent observers assessed each tooth extraction site. Statistical analysis compared control against study group, and within the latter, sites MRONJ+ and MRONJ−. Results: In total, 120 patients (99 females/21 males) with 354 tooth extractions were included, from which nine patients (7.5%) and eleven tooth extraction sites (3.1%) developed MRONJ. When comparing control with study group, the latter showed significantly more thickened lamina dura, persistence of the alveolar socket, heterogeneous bone patterns, and sequestrum formation. In the study group, MRONJ developed significantly more in males (19%, p = 0.049), smokers (25%, p = 0.008), in the mandible (82%, p = 0.027), when identifying a radiolucent or sclerotic trabecular pattern (p = 0.004) or when extracting teeth with furcation involvement (p < 0.001), root remnants (p = 0.017), or unrestored caries lesions (p = 0.005). Background. The aim of this study is to determine the atheromatous plaques' prevalence in orthopantomography and their relationship with periodontal disease and missing teeth. Material and Methods. Orthopantomographs of 1,254 patients over 18 years of age from Clínica Arlanza in Lerma, Burgos, were examined between 2017 and 2021. A Planmeca ProOne® orthopantomograph (68 kV, 7 mA, and 10 sg) was used. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS Statistics® version 25. The results of the categorical variables were described as frequencies (%). Contingency tables were made with the qualitative variables, and the chi-square test was applied to study the relationship among them. The measure of statistical power used was the relative risk (RR), which was described with its respective 95% confidence interval (CI). Student's t-test was applied to study the relationship between the qualitative variable "presence or absence of atheroma plaque" and the quantitative variable "number of teeth." Results. A 6.2% prevalence of atheroma plaques was obtained from 1,079 selected X-rays. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened. The risk in patients with periodontal disease increased as periodontal disease worsened as follows: healthy patients vs. periodontal patients with less than 30% bone loss in radiography: RR 0.434, 95% CI 0.181–1.041, p = 0.053 healthy patients vs. patients with between 30%–60% bone loss: RR 0.177, 95% CI 0.075–0.418, p < 0.05 healthy patients vs. patients with more than 60% bone loss: RR 0.121, 95% CI 0.041–0.355, p < 0.05. Conclusions. Orthopantomography can be considered a screening method to detect patients at increased cardiovascular risk who are referred for individualized study. This paper presents a novel method for real‐time generation of seamless spherical panoramic videos from an omnidirectional multi‐camera system (OMS). Firstly, a multi‐view video alignment model called spherical projection constrained thin‐plate spline (SP‐TPS) was established and estimated using an approximately symmetrical seam‐line, maintaining the structure inconsistency around the seam‐line. Then, a look‐up table was designed to support real‐time processing of video re‐projection, video dodging and seam‐line updates. In the table, the overlapping areas in OMS multi‐view videos, the seam‐lines between spherical panoramas and OMS multi‐view videos and the pixel coordinate mapping relationship between spherical panoramas and OMS multi‐view videos were pre‐stored as a whole. Finally, a spherical panoramic video was outputted in real‐time through look‐up table computation under an ordinary GPU processor. The experiments were conducted on multi‐view video taken by "1 + 4" and "1 + 7" OMS, respectively. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with four state‐of‐the‐art methods reported in the literature and two bits of commercial software for video stitching, the proposed method excels in eliminating visual artefacts and demonstrates superior adaptability to scenes with varying depths of field. Assuming that OMS is not movable in the scene, this method can generate seamless spherical panoramic videos with a resolution of 8 K in real time, which is of great value to the surveillance field. Background: Panoramic radiographs (PRs) are used in the detection and diagnosis of developmental dental anomalies and pathologies (DDAPs) in children. Aim: The primary objective of this observational cohort study was to evaluate the age‐based prevalence of DDAP on PRs, whereas the secondary objective was to determine a threshold age for the detection of DDAP to provide supportive evidence for the prescription of PR in paediatric dental practice. Design: The study examined diagnostic PRs from 581 subjects aged 6 to 19 years. All PRs were reviewed by experienced, calibrated, masked examiners for the identification or presence of anomalies in size, shape, position, structure, and other developmental anomalies and pathologies (ODAP) of the face–neck region in a standardized condition. The data were statistically analyzed for interpretation. Results: Overall, 74% (n = 411) of the cohort had at least one anomaly (shape anomaly: 12%, number anomaly: 17%, positional anomaly: 28%, structural anomaly: 0%, and ODAP: 63%). The optimal Youden index cutoff for any anomaly was 9 years. Twelve and 15 years also showed predictive ability. Objectives: To assess the trueness of digital measurements using direct and indirect scanning approaches compared to the actual clinical measurements. Materials and Methods: The crown length, width, and width/length ratio were measured in 36 anterior maxillary teeth using three different methods. The first was clinically using a digital caliper, the second was by scanning the teeth using a digital scanner and the third was by making an impression of the teeth, constructing a stone cast in the lab, and scanning it to obtain digital measurements. Bland–Altman test and intraclass correlation were used to assess the data and make comparisons. Results: Measurements taken using both approaches were highly reliable, with intraclass correlations ranging from 0.934 to 0.977 (p ≤ 0.000). Bland–Altman plot reflected a minimal mean difference between measurements especially in crown width measurements. Crown width/crown length measurement displayed the highest mean difference. Conclusions: Both direct and indirect optical surface scans showed similar high trueness in linear measurements of teeth. A higher discrepancy was detected in the crown width/length ratio. Clinical Significance: Digital dentistry is the new era in patient management. The use of conventional impression techniques and physical dental casts is associated with several disadvantages. Scanning dental casts to convert physical records into digital ones has multiple advantages. Optical surface scans (digital models) of the dentition are currently being more broadly used and advocated in the different dental disciplines including the construction of surgical guides for esthetic crown lengthening procedures. Aim: To explore associations between root filled teeth, primary and secondary apical periodontitis, and levels of inflammatory markers in blood from patients with a first myocardial infarction and matched controls. Methodology: Between May 2010 and February 2014, 805 patients with a first myocardial infarction and 805 controls, matched for sex, age, and postal code area, were recruited to the multicentre case–control study PAROKRANK (periodontitis and its relation to coronary artery disease). All participants underwent a physical and oral examination, as well as blood sampling. Using panoramic radiography, root filled teeth, primary apical periodontitis, and secondary apical periodontitis were assessed by three independent observers. Blood samples were analysed with enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay method for the following inflammatory markers: interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), IL‐2, IL‐6, IL‐8, IL‐12p70, tumour necrosis factor‐α, and high‐sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hsCRP). Additionally, white blood cell count and plasma‐fibrinogen were analysed. Associations between endodontic variables and the levels of inflammatory markers were statistically analysed with Mann–Whitney U‐test and Spearman correlation, adjusted for confounding effects of baseline factors (sex, age, myocardial infarction, current smoking, diabetes, family history of cardiovascular disease, education, marital status, and periodontal disease). Results: Mean age of the cohort was 62 years, and 81% were males. Root fillings were present in 8.4% of the 39 978 examined teeth and were associated with higher levels of hsCRP, fibrinogen, and leukocyte count, but lower levels of IL‐2 and IL‐12p70. After adjusting for confounders, root filled teeth remained associated with higher levels of fibrinogen, but lower levels of IL‐1β, IL‐2, IL‐6, and IL‐12p70. Primary apical periodontitis was found in 1.2% of non‐root filled teeth and associated with higher levels of IL‐8 (correlation 0.06, p =.025). Secondary apical periodontitis was found in 29.6% of root filled teeth but did not relate to the levels of any of the inflammatory markers. Conclusions: This study supports the notion that inflammation at the periapex is more than a local process and that systemic influences cannot be disregarded. Whether the observed alterations in plasma levels of inflammatory markers have any dismal effects on systemic health is presently unknown but, considering the present results, in demand of further investigation. Objective: In this study, we examined the mandibular trabecular bone structures by performing fractal dimension (FD) analysis in patients who underwent renal transplantation (RTx). Methods: Our study is an observational study with 69 RTx patients and 35 control group patients. The mean FD values of the patient and control groups were calculated and compared. In addition, biochemical parathyroid hormone (PTH), serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and vitamin‐D parameters and FD values of both groups were analyzed. Results: FD values were significantly lower in the patient group than in the healthy group (p <.05). In the RTx group compared to the control group, ALP (90.71 ± 34.25–66.54 ± 16.8, respectively) (p <.001) and PTH (75.76 ± 38.01–38.17 ± 12.39, respectively) (p <.001) values were higher. There was a positive correlation between the FD values and ALP (rspearman =.305, p =.011) and a negative correlation between FD values and vitamin‐D (rspearman =.287, p =.017) of patients with RTx. Conclusion: FD values were found to be lower in patients who underwent RTx compared to the control group. Background: Breast carcinoma is a common tumor in women, but it rarely metastasizes to the oral region. Case presentation: An 83‐year‐old woman presented with numbness and pain on the right side of the mandible. The patient's medical history included breast cancer that was treated with surgery. Panoramic radiograph showed a radiolucency with ill‐defined margin in the right mandible. CT images showed an osteolytic lesion with cortical bone destruction in the right mandible. Histopathological diagnosis was invasive ductal carcinoma. Conclusion: Dental practitioner should be aware that metastatic tumor of the mandible may occur in the patient with breast cancer. Background/Aim: Although previous studies have revealed the influence of the mandibular third molar (M3) on mandibular condylar fracture risk and that the presence of M3 could result in different incidences of condylar and angle fractures, there have been no analyses of the influence of M3 on fracture patterns. Moreover, evaluations of M3 position using panoramic radiography have shown insufficient accuracy. This study investigated the relationship between condylar fracture patterns and M3 position using panoramic radiography and computed tomography. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 280 patients with unilateral mandibular condylar fractures and ipsilateral M3 admitted to West China Hospital of Stomatology between January 2016 and June 2022. Patient medical records, panoramic radiographs, and computed tomography images were collected. The vertical and horizontal positions of M3 were classified using the Pell and Gregory system. M3 angulation was defined as the angle between the long axis of M3 and the mandibular occlusal plane. Condylar fracture patterns were classified as intracapsular (Types A–C) or extracapsular (neck and base). Data were analyzed using McNemar–Bowker test, Pearson chi‐squared test, and Fisher's exact test. Results: Classification of M3 position differed significantly between panoramic radiography and computed tomography images (p <.05). There was a significant association between the mandibular condylar fracture pattern and M3 horizontal position on computed tomography (p <.05). Class I M3 position on computed tomography was associated with a higher incidence of intracapsular than extracapsular fractures, along with a higher incidence of Type B than base fractures; the opposite relationships were observed for Class II. No such association was identified on panoramic radiography. Conclusions: Mandibular condylar fracture patterns were presumably influenced by M3 horizontal position on computed tomography. The imaging modality affected the classification of M3 position and subsequent analyses. Computed tomography is recommended for future studies to improve accuracy and reliability. Patients with chronic and severe hearing loss, refractory to nonsurgically‐worn devices, may consider use of cochlear implants to regain auditory capability. Cochlear implants consist of surgically emplaced and externally worn components. There are few published examples of the radiographic presentation of these devices appearing in the special needs‐based dental literature. This article features a case report and panoramic radiographic examination involving a 67‐year‐old patient who received bilateral cochlear implants after experiencing a traumatic brain injury and onset loss of hearing. Comprehensive preoperative assessment, meticulous surgical techniques, and precise radiographic imaging play pivotal roles in successful management. Adhering to established protocols is imperative to mitigate potential complications and ensure optimal outcomes. In this report, we emphasize the critical importance of comprehensive preoperative preparation to tailor surgical approaches and techniques in accordance with recognized surgical principles. Oral and maxillofacial surgery often involves the extraction of impacted lower third molars, a common surgical procedure. However, this procedure can present potential complications such as hemorrhage, tissue damage, infection, alveolar osteitis, paresthesia, and mandible dislocation. Unintentional displacement of a mandibular third molar or its root fragments into adjacent anatomical areas, such as the maxillary sinus or submandibular space, is a rare intra‐operative exodontia complication that is seldom documented. A 44‐year‐old male patient presented with complaints of pain, discomfort, and limited mouth opening. He had previously attempted to have a tooth extracted, but the procedure resulted in a misplaced tooth. A painful, indurated swelling was observed at the patient's left mandibular angle. Radiographic analyses revealed a radiopaque lesion resembling the third molar tooth root. Utilizing orthopantomography and CT images, the misplaced root in the left submandibular region was accurately located. The tooth was successfully extracted following the elevation of a lingual flap. The patient was prescribed antibiotics and painkillers for 7 days, and he reported an uneventful recovery with no complications on the eighth postoperative day. Accidental displacement of lower third molars or root fragments into neighboring anatomical areas is a rare but potentially concerning complication. Common sites of displacement include the submandibular, sublingual, and pterygomandibular spaces. Risk factors for displacement encompass improper use of surgical instruments and variations in patient anatomical characteristics. The aims of this study were to develop a new classification for pre‐eruptive intracoronal resorption(PIR) with different resorption areas and sizes and to compare the new classification scores among observers from different specialities and professional experience. The PIR was evaluated according to the new classification by two dentomaxillofacial radiologists and two endodontists. Information regarding the patient's age, gender, systemic diseases, the number of PIR, the affected tooth area and the size of the PIR was recorded. The new classification system showed that PIR six and seven defects were the most detected. Regarding jaw regions, the highest reliability was seen in the maxillary central teeth between observers I and IV, and maxillary premolar‐molar teeth between observers II and III. This study revealed that PIR can be found in both root and crown dentine. Professional experience and specialty and awareness of the PIR defect may affect the diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Atherosclerotic lesions in the common carotid artery are one of the most frequent causes of ischemic stroke. They are usually diagnosed by cardiologists and are managed following complementary examinations. In dental practice, panoramic radiograph is a basic examination frequently performed in first line. On this radiography, possible unilateral or bilateral opacities projecting to the latero-cervical regions can be visualized, raising suspicion of carotid calcifications. The aim of this study was to present, through three cases and a review of the literature, the benefit of PR in the diagnosis of carotid calcifications and the approaches to be followed in case of such suspicious images. This would contribute, in some cases, to an early diagnosis and management, thus avoiding the evolution towards cerebral vascular accidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and dentomaxillofacial radiology from the perspective of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. It highlights Wittgenstein's observations about the differences in human perception of verbal and visual information. The article also presents a study on the diagnostic accuracy of radiolucent lesions in panoramic radiography (PAN) and the unexpected finding that some teeth appeared absent in PAN but had no lesions in periapical radiographs (PAR). The study suggests that dentists and radiologists consider surrounding anatomical structures and patient history when making diagnoses, and emphasizes the need for clarifying observer behaviors and standardizing radiography quality in AI applications in dental radiology. The diagnosis of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) relies on the application of the clinical criteria stated in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons position paper. The role of diagnostic imaging in integrating MRONJ clinical assessment is still debated, as pathognomonic imaging features have not been yet recognized. The present study retrospectively evaluated the radiographic signs of MRONJ on panoramic radiography with the aim of describing the characteristics of the lesions at different stages of the disease. The presence of alterations of the lamina dura (thickening or loss), the persistence of the alveolar socket following tooth extraction, and bone alterations (including sequestrum, sclerosis, osteolysis, mandibular canal enhancement, pathologic fracture, sinus involvement, and periosteal reaction) were investigated. The occurrence of each radiographic sign was stratified depending on oral status, antiresorptive pharmacological treatment administered, and general health variables. A weak relationship between radiographic signs and disease stage was observed. Mandibular canal enhancement was associated with the advanced disease stage (p-value < 0.001). The distribution of the different radiographic features was not influenced by the underlying disease (osteoporosis or oncologic disease) treated with antiresorptive drugs. Bone sequestrum was more frequently encountered in the mandible. Panoramic radiography appears to be a valid support in the assessment of MRONJ lesions. The clinician should be aware of the signs associated with MRONJ occurrence in order to improve the diagnostic performance and provide adequate treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to compare the trabecular internal structure of different regions of the mandible according to the grades of appositional classification in the mandible angle region in probable bruxist individuals and non‐bruxist G0(Convex course of the basal cortex, no directional change, no bone apposition) individuals by measuring fractal dimension (FD) on panoramic radiographs. Methods: 200 sample jaws, bilaterally, of 80 probable bruxists and 20 non‐bruxist G0 individuals were included in the study. According to the classification in the literature, each mandible angle apposition severity was classified as G0‐G1‐G2‐G3. FD was calculated by selecting the region of interest (ROI) area of 7 regions from each sample. Gender differences in changes between ROIs in radiographs and independent samples t‐test were evaluated. Relation between categorical variables was determined by chi‐square test (p <.05). Results: In the comparison of the probable bruxist and non‐bruxist G0 groups, FD was found to be statistically significantly higher in the mandible angle (p = 0.013) and cortical bone (p = 0.000) regions in the probable bruxist group than in the non‐bruxist G0 group. There is a statistically significant difference between probable bruxist G0 and non‐bruxist G0 grades in terms of FD averages in cortical bone (p < 0.001). A statistically significant difference was found in the relationship of ROIs with gender in canine apex (p = 0.021) and canine distal (p = 0.041) regions. Conclusion: FD was found to be higher in the mandibular angle region and cortical bone in probable bruxist individuals than in non‐bruxist G0 individuals. Morphological changes seen in the mandible angulus region may be a finding that may raise suspicion for bruxism for clinicians. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The aim of this study is to present a comparison between panoramic radiographs and USG imaging with a focus on revealing the advantages of USG over radiographs, and to show the distribution of calcifications detected in USG by considering the age and gender. Methods: A total of 148 patients with soft tissue calcifications as seen on panoramic radiographs were examined with USG imaging. Sialoliths, carotid artery calcifications, tonsilloliths, phleboliths and lymph node calcifications were examined in terms of anatomical localization, distribution and shape. Results: In the USG evaluation of these 148 patients, soft tissue calcifications were observed in 113 (76.4%) patients. The mean age of the patients with calcification was 55.6 ± 13.1 (min: 22–max: 77). Bilateral calcifications were detected in 25 (22.1%) patients, whereas unilateral calcifications were found in 88 (77.9%) patients. While the rates of tonsilloliths, sialoliths, phleboliths, and lymph node calcifications were statistically similar in male and female patients, the rate of carotid artery calcifications was found to be higher in men than in women (P = 0.017). No statistical significance was found between age groups in terms of the formation of soft tissue calcifications (P = 0.117). Conclusions: Panoramic radiographs may mislead clinicians in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of soft tissue calcifications in the head and neck region due to the presence of distortion, superpositions, metal artefacts, and ghost images. USG is an important diagnostic tool in determining the localization of soft tissue calcifications that can be confused on two‐dimensional radiographs, their relationship with neighboring structures, and defining calcification. It can be used safely in the detection of soft tissue calcifications as it provides dynamic imaging without the use of radiation or contrast material compared to other advanced imaging methods. Objectives: This study aimed to develop a diagnostic support tool using pretrained models for classifying panoramic images of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) into normal and osteoarthritis (OA) cases. Subjects and Methods: A total of 858 panoramic images of the TMJ (395 normal and 463 TMJ‐OA) were obtained from 518 individuals from January 2015 to December 2018. The data were randomly divided into training, validation, and testing sets (6:2:2). We used pretrained Resnet152 and EfficientNet‐B7 as transfer learning models. The accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, area under the curve, and gradient‐weighted class activation mapping (grad‐CAM) of both trained models were evaluated. The performances of the trained models were compared to that of dentists (both TMD specialists and general dentists). Results: The classification accuracies of ResNet‐152 and EfficientNet‐B7 were 0.87 and 0.88, respectively. The trained models exhibited the highest accuracy in OA classification. In the grad‐CAM analysis, the trained models focused on specific areas in osteoarthritis images where erosion or osteophyte were observed. Conclusions: The artificial intelligence model improved the diagnostic power of TMJ‐OA when trained with two‐dimensional panoramic condyle images and can be effectively applied by dentists as a screening diagnostic tool for TMJ‐OA. Objectives: To compare the diagnostic accuracy in detecting early non‐vital bone changes between orthopantomography (OPT) and cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) in correlation with histopathological findings before tooth extractions in patients with antiresorptive (AR) intake. Subjects: Patients with an indication tooth extraction who had received OPT and CBCT preoperatively while or after undergoing AR treatment were prospectively enrolled over a 24‐month period in the progesterone in spontaneous miscarriage (PRISM) trial. Imaging studies were randomly analyzed by three examiners for early non‐vital bone changes using specific predefined characteristics and a 5‐level scale (1 definite absence of criteria to 5 definite presence of criteria). Sensitivity and specificity values were calculated in correlation with the histopathologically evaluated bone samples at the time point of tooth extraction. Results: One hundred thirty patients with 237 treated extraction sites met the inclusion criteria. For all images evaluated by all examiners, CBCT (430/492; 87.4%; receiver operating characteristic [ROC]: area under the curve [AUC] = 0.88; p < 0.001) was more likely to detect histopathologically confirmed non‐vital bone than the OPT (132/492; 26.8%; ROC: AUC = 0.562; p = 0.115). Conclusions: In the detection of non‐vital bone changes, CBCT is superior to OPT in both sensitivity and specificity. Specific imaging characteristics allow for the prediction of early non‐vital bone changes already at the time before tooth extractions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To assess the presence of alterations suggestive of reduced bone mineral density (BMD) by using mandibular cortical index (MCI) in panoramic radiographs of cirrhotic individuals and to evaluate their relationship with other characteristics of hepatic cirrhosis (HC). Methods and Results: This is an observational case‐control study assessing the medical records of 165 cirrhotic patients matched by sex and age with healthy individuals. MELD (model of end stage liver disease) score, etiology, complications, comorbidities, and serum levels of vitamin D were collected. MCI was used to obtain BMD. Binary logistic regression was used to test associations and the risk estimates were expressed in odds ratio. Most of the sample consisted of men (73.93%) with median age of 56 years old. In the study group, the mean value of MELD was 16.5 and hepatitis C was the main etiology of HC (33.9%). Cirrhotic individuals are 3.99 times more likely to present alterations suggestive of reduced BMD (p <.01). There was no statistical significance in the association of MCI with levels of vitamin D, comorbidities, etiology or cirrhosis complications. Conclusions: MCI suggestive of reduced BMD is more likely to be identified in panoramic radiographs of cirrhotic individuals than of healthy ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy between ozone gas and 1% chlorhexidine (CHX) gel in the incidence of dry socket after surgical extraction of impacted lower third molars. Material and Methods: Overall, 30 patients of both genders were included in the study, with indication of surgical extraction of lower third molar, positioned similarly after being clinically and radiographically checked by X-ray and orthopantomography. Each patient was subjected to both groups in separate sessions: treated with ozone gas and with CHX gel 1%. Data on pain intensity, number of taken analgesicspainkillers, and dry socket were recorded for 48 h and at Day 7. Results: Ozone gas and CHX gel effectively reduced pain intensity and prevented dry socket. The number of taken analgesics 48 h and 7 days after surgery showed no statistical significance. The same was observed for the distribution of pain. Only one patient reported the occurrence of dry socket 7 days after the surgical extraction. Conclusions: Ozone gas and CHX 1% gel are both efficient in decreasing postoperative symptoms and incidence rates of dry socket, but in comparison to each other, the use of ozone gas is showing a bit better prevention capability.
