More than two‐thirds of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cannot receive curative therapy and have poor survival due to late diagnosis and few prognostic directions. In our study, nontargeted and targeted metabolomics analyses were conducted by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry to characterize metabolic features of HCC and identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarker candidate incorporating liver tissue and serum metabolites. A total of 552 subjects, including 432 with liver tissue and 120 with serum specimens, were recruited in China. In the discovery cohort, a series of 138 metabolites were identified to discriminate HCC tissues from matched nontumor tissues. Retinol presented with the highest area under the curve (AUC) of 0.991 and associated with Edmondson grade. In the validation cohort, all metabolites in retinol metabolism pathway were examined and the levels of retinol and retinal in tumor tissue and serum decreased in the order of normal to cirrhosis to HCC of Edmondson Grades I to IV. Retinol and retinal levels could also differentiate between HCC and cirrhosis, with AUCs of 0.996 and 0.994, respectively, in tissue and 0.812 and 0.744, respectively, in serum. The AUC of the combined retinol and retinal panel in serum was 0.852. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression identified this panel as an independent predictor for HCC and showed that low expression of retinol and retinal correlated with decreased survival time. In conclusion, the retinol metabolic signature had considerable diagnostic and prognostic value for identifying HCC patients who would benefit from prompt therapy and optimal prognostic direction. Currently, α‐fetoprotein (AFP) is the most practical screening biomarker for early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) detection and prognostic tool for tumor recurrence and patient survival, but the relatively poor sensitivity and specificity remain unsatisfactory. Here, retinol metabolism was found to be closely associated with the malignant transformation of HCC. Retinol and retinal displayed great diagnostic ability for HCC both in liver tissue and serum samples. The two‐metabolite panel could serve as an independent predictor for HCC; low expression of retinol and retinal correlated with decreased survival time. Abstract: As a left‐handed helical structure, Z‐DNA is biologically active and it may be correlated with transcription and genome stability. Until recently, it remained a significant challenge to control the B/Z‐DNA transition under physiological conditions. The current study represents the first to reversibly control B/Z‐DNA transition using cucurbit[7]uril‐based supramolecular approach. It is demonstrated that cucurbit[7]uril can encapsulate the central butanediamine moiety [HN(CH2)4NH] and reverses Z‐DNA caused by spermine back to B‐DNA. The subsequent treatment with 1‐adamantanamine disassembles the cucurbit[7]uril/spermine complex and readily induces reconversion of B‐ into Z‐DNA. The DNA conformational change is unequivocally demonstrated using different independent methods. Direct evidence for supramolecular interactions involved in DNA conformational changes is further provided. Aligned TiO2 nanotube layers (TiNTs) grown by self-organizing anodization of a Ti-substrate in a fluoride-based electrolyte were decorated with graphitic-phase C3N4 (g-C3N4) via a facile chemical vapor deposition approach. In comparison with classical TiO2 nanotubes (anatase), the g-C3N4/TiNTs show an onset of the photocurrent at 2.4 eV (vs. 3.2 eV for anatase) with a considerably high photocurrent magnitude in the visible range. After further decoration with Pt nanoparticles, we obtained a visible-light responsive platform that showed, compared with g-C3N4-free TiNTs, a strong enhancement for photoelectrochemical and bias-free H2 evolution (15.62 μLh−1 cm−2), which was almost a 98-fold increase in the H2 production rate of TiNTs (0.16 μLh−1 cm−2). In a wider context, the g-C3N4-combined 3 D nanoporous/nanotubular structure thus provides a platform with significant visible-light response in photocatalytic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Herein, we use a facile procedure to graft a thin graphitic C3N4 (g-C3N4) layer on aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiNT) by a one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach. This provides a platform to enhance the visible-light response of TiO2 nanotubes for antimicrobial applications. The formed g-C3N4/TiNT binary nanocomposite exhibits excellent bactericidal efficiency against Escherichia coli ( E. coli) as a visible-light activated antibacterial coating, without the use of additional bactericides. In this work, we use a double-layered stack of TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs) to construct a visible-light-triggered drug delivery system. The key for visible light drug release is a hydrophobic cap on the nanotubes containing Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The AuNPs allow for a photocatalytic scission of the hydrophobic chain under visible light. To demonstrate this principle, we loaded ampicillin (AMP) into the lower part of the TiO2 nanotube stack, triggered visiblelight- induced release, and carried out antibacterial studies. The release from the platform becomes most controllable if the drug is silane-grafted in the hydrophilic bottom layer for drug storage. Semi-metallic TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO xC y NTs) have been decorated uniformly with Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles without the aid of a polymer binder. The resulting hybrid nanotube arrays exhibit excellent catalytic activity towards non-enzymatic glucose electro-oxidation. The anodic current density of the glucose oxidation is significantly improved compared with traditional TiO2 nanotubes decorated with Ni(OH)2. Moreover, the Ni(OH)2/TiO xC y NT-based electrode shows a fast response, high sensitivity, wide linear range, good selectivity and stability towards glucose electro-oxidation, and thus provides a promising and cost-effective sensing platform for non-enzymatic glucose detection. Background. The objective was to describe the extent of passive smoking exposure and preventive actions against passive smoking in non-smoking pregnant women and to analyze factors associated with preventive actions. Methods. This was a cross-sectional survey on 1449 never-smoking pregnant women who made their first prenatal visit to the Women and Children's Hospital of Guangzhou, China during 1996–97. Results. 60.2% (95% Confidence Interval 57.7%–62.7%) of the never-smoking pregnant women had a husband who currently smoked. Women with smoking husbands (n=872) were more exposed to ETS than those with non-smoking husbands (n=577) at home (71% vs. 33%), in public places (77% vs. 66%) and at work (60% vs. 50% of working women), and they took less actions against passive smoking in public places. Women with better education and knowledge on smoking and passive smoking had stronger preventive actions. Conclusions. Non-smoking pregnant women in China are often exposed to passive smoking and their preventive actions are weak. Passive smoking is an important obstetric and public health problem in developing countries and deserves urgent international attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
