Summary: In theory, there is a trade‐off between hydraulic efficiency and safety. However, the strength and direction of this trade‐off at the leaf level are not consistent across studies, and habitat climate may impact this trade‐off.We compiled a leaf hydraulic efficiency and safety dataset for 362 species from 81 sites world‐wide, with 280 paired observations of both traits, and tested whether climate was associated with departure from the proposed trade‐off.The leaf hydraulic efficiency–safety trade‐off was weak (R2 = 0.144) at the global scale. Mean annual precipitation and solar radiation (SR) modified the trade‐off. Species from dry and high SR habitats (e.g. desert and tropical savanna) were generally located above the trade‐off line, indicating that these species tended to have higher leaf hydraulic safety and efficiency than species from wet habitats with low SR (e.g. subtropical monsoon forest and montane rainforest), which were located below the trade‐off line. Leaves with high vein density, dry leaf mass per area, and osmotic regulation enhanced safety without compromising hydraulic efficiency.Variation in the hydraulic efficiency–safety trade‐off at the leaf level likely facilitates plant survival in specific habitats and allows for a more nuanced view of leaf hydraulic adaption strategies at the global scale. ABSTRACT Batocera horsfieldi is a major wood‐boring pest in China's timber and economic forests, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This study headspace solid‐phase microextraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) were used to analyse the volatile components of B. horsfieldi supplementary feeding host plants, and fingerprint profiles were established. The results revealed that the five plants contained 21, 18, 22, 16 and 17 volatile compounds, mostly terpenes, aldehydes and alcohols, along with trace amounts of furans, ketones and ethers. The terpene compounds were mainly monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. The results of hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were consistent. Five common peaks were identified in these host plants, with (E)‐2‐hexenal, caryophyllene, (E)‐cinnamaldehyde, nonanal, and 3,7‐dimethyl‐1,6‐octadien‐3‐ol being the shared volatile components among the five plants. The mantel test, correlation analysis and grey relational analysis indicated that temperature and precipitation are important factors affecting the content of volatile components. Recurring use of chemical fertilizers (CFs) in agriculture has resulted the remarkable improvement in crop productivity but their ruinous effects on environment have made a serious issue. Biological entities (e.g., several microorganisms) showing fertilizer‐like activities have gained attention in this regard. Several soil resident microorganisms interact strongly with neighboring plants and promote the growth and development of those plants through various means. In exchange of this, microbes utilize different compounds released from plant roots for their own nutrition. This mutualistic mode of interrelation predominantly relies on the transmission of signals from microbes to plants and vice versa. However, climatic factors (e.g., CO2 level, temperature, and water availability) are also important for this association. These bacterial strains are literally known as plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) which facilitate plant growth through nitrogen fixation, mineral solubilization, phytostimulation, stress resistance, etc. Responding to the external environmental stimuli, they often modulate the expression of genes responsible for the transport of nutrients. Reduction of the use of CFs through the application of PGPR strains in the cultivation of some economically important plants has been reported by several authors. Significant yield improvement compared to the control groups was found in all experimental studies. Commercial development of the PGPR inoculants with remarkable biostimulating activities and their successive application should be expanded through collaborative association with different sectors after the removal of existing lacunae. Reading more than 100 articles on various aspects of rhizobacteria, the plan of writing this article has been executed. In this review, we have discussed about the colonization and potency of PGPR strains and how their well‐planned application in agriculture could evidently reinforce the global economy. The main structure of this text is designed as an outline from the development of interrelation between plants and PGPR to the commercialization of PGPR based on their potential role in the field of agriculture. Energy generation and economic development are closely linked, with energy playing a pivotal role in wealth creation. However, the finite nature of fossil fuel resources and associated environmental challenges has emphasized the need for sustainable energy alternatives based on renewable sources. Among these alternatives, photovoltaic (PV) systems hold significant potential for fostering a sustainable energy system. Despite ongoing material research, achieving a major breakthrough in enhancing the conversion efficiency of commercial PV modules remains a challenge. To optimize PV system yield, installation must consider geographic location and design factors. PV modules often yield different results compared to manufacturer specifications due to factors such as high temperatures, dust, and arid to semiarid climates. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct outdoor testing and characterization of PV modules tailored to specific locations, such as Jordan, to maximize system performance. This research aims to examine the impact of ambient temperature, dust accumulation, and solar irradiance intensity on PV system performance in Jordan, providing valuable insights through monitoring power output variations. The findings will contribute to improving PV system efficiency in Jordan's unique climate and aid manufacturers in developing innovative PV applications. The collected data includes solar radiation, temperature, voltage, current, and output power. Meteorological drought, especially when influenced by human activities, significantly impacts agriculture. We assessed the Yangtze River Basin (YRB)'s crop ecosystem resilience during the 2022 southern China drought. Using the elasticity framework, we quantified crop Leaf Area Index (LAI) changes with meteorological factors and human activities (irrigation) in the YRB. Our study covered maize, wheat, early and late‐season rice, evaluating model accuracy with and without irrigation. Results indicate high accuracy (R2 > 0.8, p < 0.05) in simulating LAI changes, notably improved with irrigation. Irrigation emerged as the primary driver of LAI changes in the past two decades, except for solar radiation's impact on maize. In 2022, irrigation crucially influenced LAI changes, particularly in rice varieties. Early‐season rice and late‐season rice saw over 40% contribution from irrigation, while maize and wheat responded mainly to precipitation and radiation. Overall, 2022 yields remained stable, with late‐season rice showing an apparent increase. Drought timing correlated with maize, wheat, and early‐season rice yields, consistent with natural patterns. Conversely, late‐season rice exhibited the opposite pattern due to artificial irrigation, impacting 58% of the growing areas in 2022. The study offers insights into investigating farmland ecosystems responding to extreme droughts. In China, droughts have traditionally affected the northern regions, but recent years have seen an increase in occurrence in the southern regions as well. The Southern Drought of 2022 was considered the worst drought in the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) since 1961. This study investigates the resilience of agricultural systems in the YRB during the severe drought of 2022. It examines the factors influencing crop Leaf Area Index variations and the impact of climate and human activities, such as irrigation. Findings deepen our understanding of drought effects on agriculture and highlight the crucial role of human irrigation interventions. Despite the severe drought, crop yields did not substantially decline, largely due to human interventions increasing late‐season rice yields. Soil microbial biomass (SMB) is a fundamental contributor to soil ecosystem services. Mycorrhizal fungi, a significant group of soil microbes, play essential roles in regulating carbon allocation and nutrient cycles. Acknowledging the profound importance of SMB and mycorrhizal symbiosis, our objective was to explore how mycorrhizal types modulate the global patterns of SMB across varied land use types (LUTs). Using data from 329 independent studies, we categorized vegetation species with defined mycorrhizal types into arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) type (with 958 observations) or mixed AM and ectomycorrhizal (AM + ECM) type (with 481 observations). This categorization served as the foundation for our investigation into the impacts of various LUTs and environmental conditions (mean annual temperature, and mean annual precipitation, MAP) on global SMB patterns associated with specific mycorrhizal associations. The overall mean value of SMB was remarkably higher under AM + ECM type (92.23 ± 4.73 nmol/g) compared with that under AM type (49.45 ± 1.87 nmol/g) at a global scale. The primary factor contributing to this difference was the natural system. Additionally, the AM + ECM type (0.19 ± 0.01) exhibited a higher F:B ratio (Fungi‐to‐bacteria ratio) than the AM type (0.16 ± 0.001), attributed to the cumulative effects of different LUTs. Furthermore, SMB was markedly positively affected by aridity index under AM type and negatively influenced by temperature under AM + ECM type. Besides, MAP had a pronounced positive impact on SMB under AM type, while exhibiting a negative impact under AM + ECM type. Our study presented evidence affirming the essential role of mycorrhizal associations in shaping global patterns of SMB in response to environmental factors across varied LUTs. The reduction in the area and volume of glaciation in all mountain regions of the Earth has strongly accelerated for the last decades. In this work, we analysed the trends of the main climatic parameters which caused the glacier recession in the Kamchatka Peninsula. It was shown that the glaciers of the northern part of the Sredinny Range decreased by 125 km2 (35.6%) from 1950 to 2016–2017. The average rate of their reduction in the period from 2002 to 2016–2017 (1.45%/year) increased approximately 4.3 times compared to the period 1950–2002 (0.34%/year). The greatest reduction is observed in small glaciers with an area of less than 0.1 km2 and in glaciers with southeastern and southern expositions. On the Kronotsky Peninsula, the glacier area reduction for 1957–2019 was equal to 32.1 km2 (35.6%), and the rates were almost the same in the periods of 1957–2000 (0.61%/year) and 2000–2019 (0.67%/year). According to the data of weather stations and ERA5 reanalysis, it was shown that, in the ablation (summer) period the warming rate was minimal (0.3°C/10 years) and in the accumulation period a significant decrease in precipitation (5%–10%/10 years) was revealed in some areas. At the same time, a significant increase in the radiation balance was revealed in the warm season along with a tendency in downward shortwave radiation increase for the last two decades due to a decrease in cloud amount. These trends are in good agreement with the growth of the geopotential height over the North Pacific during the warm season in the 21st century, and with the growth of velocity divergence in the middle troposphere and the intensification of downward air movements. All this confirms an increase in anticyclone frequency in the warm season, which could be the cause of a radiation balance increase and, consequently, an increase in glacier ablation. Disentangling the distribution patterns of biodiversity along altitudinal gradients and their drivers has been a hot topic in ecological research. Different forest strata show multiple distribution patterns influenced by different community assembly mechanisms. Here, we measure the dominant ecological processes affecting three forest strata (tree, shrub, and herb layers) along altitudinal gradients. We sampled plants with different forest strata in 21 plots located from 2500 to 3700 m in Lasha Mountain, northwestern Yunnan. The taxonomic alpha diversity of the herb layer showed a monotonic decreasing trend with increasing altitude, while the shrub layer was characterized by a single peak, and the tree layer showed no significant change with increasing altitude. We observed a decreasing pattern of phylogenetic diversity with increasing altitude in the herb layer, whereas phylogenetic diversity did not change in the tree and shrub layers. The phylogenetic structure of these three layers showed the same pattern: phylogenetic clustering at low altitudes and overdispersion at middle and high altitudes. The diversity and phylogenetic structure of the herb layer were driven by climate (average dry season precipitation) and topographic (slope and aspect) factors, while shrub layer diversity was mainly influenced by tree layer richness. Overall, the phylogenetic structure pattern of the three forest strata changed from clustered to overdispersed with increasing altitude, indicating that environmental filtering was the main driver at low altitudes, while interspecific competition dominated at middle and high altitudes. To the modern-day conservationist, knowledge on giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) movement patterns is crucial for the effective management of this increasingly threatened species. The aim of this study was to determine the seasonal distances travelled by giraffes in a highly seasonal semi-arid savanna area and to investigate how specific climatic factors influence their spatial distribution. Distributed over the 95,537-ha reserve, we selected eight adult female giraffes that were equipped with radio transmitter collars using geographical positioning system devices to investigate their movement patterns over a 21-month period in the Kalahari region of South Africa. Climatic data were collected using three weather stations at different locations in the study area. Giraffes moved significantly longer distances and for longer hours during the cool, dry season compared to other seasons. Both temperature and rainfall had statistically significant effects on distances travelled. The giraffes moved significantly longer distances with higher rainfall and temperature. They also moved significantly further during the middle of the day in all seasons, except winter. The reasons for these movement patterns are discussed with special emphasis on the influence of climatic factors on resource availability in a highly seasonal environment with periods of low resource availability. Identification of the patterns through which potential rates of proteolysis and ammonification are affected by key edaphic and climatic factors offer a powerful avenue for elucidating the potential of nitrogen (N) cycle processes in arid terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we aimed to investigate how the tradeoff between soil properties and climatic factors govern amino acids and the nitrogen cycling enzyme traits in steppe biomes. We analysed changes in amino acid pools and protease and amidohydrolase activities along arid and semi‐arid climate gradients over time. The biome edaphic factors (site) were found to have significant (p < 0.001) effects on all enzyme activities, while climatic factors (time) showed significant (p < 0.001) effects on protease, L‐glutaminase, and L‐asparaginase activities. Over the sites and times, the soil moisture (%) explained 20%–27% of the variation in protease, L‐glutaminase, and L‐asparaginase activities. Soil‐free amino acid concentrations were observed to be significantly affected by site (p < 0.05). The aliphatic and polar amino acid pools, however, were the only soil‐free amino acid pools that significantly varied with time (p < 0.05). Pools of aliphatic and polar amino acids were significantly negatively correlated with soil moisture (r = −0.55, p < 0.05). These results find that the soil N dynamics in arid ecosystems might dramatically depend dramatically on edaphic factors and plant litter properties, and changes in soil pH, electrical conductivity, clay content, total soil organic carbon and total soil and litter N maybe even more important than the soil moisture, although sensitivity to edaphic factors were found to vary with a pathway and time of sampling. The sustainable supply of whole crop maize (WCM, Zea mays L.), as the domestic high-quality forage source, is causing great concern among the related parties in the Republic of Korea. Many new cultivars were introduced or developed in recent decades. This study was conducted to construct the WCM weather-crop yield prediction model considering cultivar maturity as well as to evaluate the effects of local climatic factors on yield. Data on the nationwide adaptability tests of WCM cultivars and the meteorological data were collected and merged into a dataset (n = 386, 22 years) after data cleansing. Three climatic variables, including the accumulation values of growing degree days, precipitation, and sunshine hours from seeding to harvesting, were generated. Then, the dataset was split into two sub datasets considering cultivar maturity. Subsequently, the models, including the three climatic variables and the cultivated location, were constructed for both sub datasets. The finesses and accuracy of the models were confirmed by residual diagnostics and 3-fold cross-validation. The accumulated temperature, sunshine time, and precipitation were found to significantly affect the WCM yield variance, while the precipitation factor caused stresses to the yield, which indicates water management is important for WCM cultivation. The foraging activities of pollinators depend on a variety of factors, such as the availability of pollen and nectar resources or the seasonality. We performed measurements on the activity patterns of Apis mellifera adansonii Latreille by focusing on different factors: (i) we counted the number of bees entering the hives during 10 min per hour starting from 05:00 AM to 06:00 PM, once a month and along the year, (ii) we measured the hive weights at different intervals during the study and (iii) we characterised the diversity of melliferous plants within a 1 km radius around the hives. Our results show that melliferous flora is composed of 83 species. During the dry season, the honey bees foraged on flowering trees and shrubs, whereas in the rainy season herbaceous plants provided forage for honey bees. The results revealed a significant correlation between foraging activity and the mean hive weights (r = 0.9) while relative humidity was negatively correlated but not significantly with, respectively, mean hive weights (r = −0.5) and foraging activity (r = −0.6). Thus, the combination of biotic and abiotic factors resulted in two distinct periods, namely a phase of honey flow followed by a phase of honey scarcity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seed dormancy contributes greatly to successful establishment and community stability and shows large variation over a continuous status scale in mountain ecosystems. Although empirical studies have shown that seed dormancy status (SDS) is shaped by elevation and phylogenetic history in mountain ecosystems, few studies have quantified their combined effects on SDS. Here, we collected mature seeds from 51 populations of 11 Impatiens species (Balsaminaceae) along an elevational gradient in the Gaoligong Mountains of southwest China and estimated SDS using mean dormancy percentage of fresh seeds germinated at three constant temperatures (15, 20, and 25°C). We downloaded 19 bioclimatic variables from WorldClim v.2.1 for each Impatiens population and used internal transcribed spacer (ITS), atpB‐rbcL, and trnL‐F molecular sequences from the GenBank nucleotide database to construct a phylogenetic tree of the 11 species of Impatiens. Logistic regression model analysis was performed to quantify the effects of phylogeny and environment on SDS. Results identified a significant phylogenetic SDS signal in the Impatiens species. Furthermore, elevation and phylogeny accounted for 63.629% of the total variation in SDS among the Impatiens populations. The best logistic model indicated that temperature was the main factor influencing variation in SDS among the Impatiens species, and model residuals were significantly correlated with phylogeny, but not with elevation. Our results indicated that seed dormancy is phylogenetically conserved, and climate drives elevational patterns of SDS variation in mountain ecosystems. Precipitation concentration is a key climatic factor in the hydrologic system. The purpose of this study was to explore the spatiotemporal variation in precipitation concentration and its possible relationship with large‐scale atmospheric circulation and land use types. Based on daily precipitation recorded at 254 stations during 1961–2019 throughout the Haihe River basin (HRB), linear slope and Manner–Kendall trend analysis were used to analyse the spatial variations and trends of the annual daily precipitation concentration index (CI). The Pearson correlation coefficient and cross wavelet analysis were used to evaluate potential correlations between CI and eight climatic factors. Meteorological stations were classified into three land use types: urban type (UT), farmland type (FT), and natural type (NT) using hierarchical clustering, and the impacts of land use types on CI variations and trends were investigated. Annual CI in HRB showed a significant downward trend with a linear rate of −0.0058/decade, and about 210 of the 254 stations had a downtrend, in which 42 stations were at the significance level of 0.05 but did not reach the significance level of 0.01, and 52 stations are at the 0.01 significance level. The East Asian monsoon index (EASMI), South Asian monsoon index (SASMI), South China Sea monsoon index (SCSMI), and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) were positively correlated with CI, whereas the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Multivariate ENSO index (MEI), and Western Pacific index (WP) were negatively correlated. The Sunspot index (SS) had a significant resonance period of 9–14‐year with CI. EASMI and ENSO events were the dominant factors driving CI trends. The negative CI trends of UT were more significant than those of FT and NT, with linear slope gaps of −0.0041/decade (UT versus FT) and −0.0064/decade (UT vs. NT), respectively. Solenopsis invicta Buren, also known as the red imported fire ant (RIFA), has had a very negative effect on biological diversity, public safety, agriculture, and economics. Because of the growth in global trade, the RIFA threat to China will continue to increase. To better understand characteristics of newly observed distributions of RIFA, we studied the effects of three factors including provincial areas, landcover types, and climatic conditions on the 130 new occurrence records in 2021. (1) We found that RIFA preferred to invade Sichuan and Guangxi, and provinces that are large agricultural producers were more vulnerable to invasive RIFA. Guangdong was the most damaged province, and wealthy provinces, especially southeastern coastal provinces, were more at risk and suffered a bigger loss from the further RIFA threat. (2) Compared with other habitats, plantations received more significant damage from invasive RIFA. (3) Areas with an annual precipitation of 516.4 mm, annual average temperature of 18.6°C, or elevation of 569.9 m had a great abundance of invasive RIFA. Our study suggests that stringent inspection and quarantine measures are necessary in new occurrence areas to prevent further RIFA outbreak, and highlights the need for cross‐provincial cooperation and national coordination to slow its spread. Aim: The introduction of exotic plants can both increase (homogenize) and decrease (differentiate) floristic similarity between areas. We have a poor understanding of the degree to which plant species introductions tend to homogenize or differentiate floras, and relevant studies covering large spatial extent are scarce. China has been heavily invaded by exotic plants. Here, we analyse a comprehensive dataset of vascular plants to determine whether the introduction of exotic plant species has homogenized or differentiated species composition in regions across China. Location: China. Methods: We calculated the Jaccard index and Simpson index of similarity for each pair of province‐level regions for native and exotic species separately and jointly, and calculated a homogenization index for each pair of regional floras. We correlated species richness of native and exotic plants to climatic factors, and correlated the Jaccard index and Simpson index to geographic and climatic distances. We used variation partitioning analysis to determine the relative importance of geographic and climatic distances on species turnover. We also examined the effect of human population density on florisitic similarity of exotic species. Results: We found that the geographic range of each species was, on average, larger for exotics than for natives; floristic similarity between regions was greater for exotics than for natives; the vast majority of pairwise regional floras have been homogenized; the introduction of exotic species has caused stronger biotic homogenization for pairwise floras with greater dissimilarity in their species composition; geographic distributions of exotic and native species were determined by different sets of climatic factors; and distributions of exotic species were determined by climatic factors more strongly, compared to those of native species. Human population density had a moderate effect on florisitic similarity of exotic species. Main conclusions: The introduction of exotic plant species has homogenized regional floras across China. Because strong international trades between China and other countries and dramatic development of transportation systems are continuing in China, which help spread of exotic species, we predict that exotic species will continue to spread and will strengthen biotic homogenization in China. 1. Protection against desiccation and chemical communication are two fundamental functions of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in insects. In the parasitoid jewel wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Walker), characterised by a cosmopolitan distribution through largely different environments, CHCs function as universally recognised female sex pheromones. However, CHC uniformity as basis for sexual recognition may conflict with the desiccation protection function, expected to display considerable flexibility through adaptation to different environmental conditions. 2. We compared male and female CHC profiles of N. vitripennis across a wide latitudinal gradient in Europe and correlated their CHC variation with climatic factors associated with desiccation. Additionally, we tested male mate discrimination behaviour between populations to detect potential variations in female sexual attractiveness. 3. Results did not conform to the general expectation that longer, straight‐chain CHCs occur in higher proportions in warmer and drier climates. Instead, unexpected environmental correlations of intermediate chain‐length CHCs (C31) were found exclusively in females, potentially reflecting the different life histories of the sexes in N. vitripennis. 4. Furthermore, we found no indication of population‐specific male mate preference, confirming the stability of female sexual attractiveness, likely conveyed through their CHC profiles. C31 mono‐ and C33 di‐methyl‐branched alkanes were consistently and most strongly associated with sexual dimorphism, suggesting their potential role in encoding the female‐specific sexual signalling function. 5. Our study sheds light on how both adaptive flexibility and conserved sexual attractiveness can potentially be integrated and encoded in CHC profiles of N. vitripennis females across a wide distribution range in Europe. Background: Previous studies have demonstrated the seasonal variations of non‐variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB), but there is scanty data on lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) and the association with other meteorological parameters. Methods: We included all patients hospitalized for UGIB and LGIB between 2009 and 2018 in Hong Kong. The monthly age‐standardized and sex‐standardized GIB incidences were fitted to meteorological data including average temperature (AT), maximum temperature (MaxT), minimum temperature (MinT), temperature range (TR), average precipitation, average atmospheric pressure (AtomP), and average relative humidity after adjusting for prescriptions of aspirin, proton pump inhibitors, and Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy using the autoregressive integrated moving average model. Results: Despite a gradual decline in UGIB incidences, the incidences of UGIB were still higher in winter months. The incidence and fluctuation of both UGIB and LGIB were higher in the older age groups, especially those ≥80 years. The seasonality was only identified in those ≥60 years for UGIB, and only in those ≥80 years for LGIB. UGIB incidence was inversely associated with AT, MaxT, and MinT, but positively associated with TR and AtomP. LGIB was also significantly associated with AT, MaxT, MinT, and AtomP. Conclusion: Despite the changes in GIB incidences, the seasonal patterns of GIB were still marked in the elderly. A research study on morphometrics of Kalophrynus palmatissimus (commonly known as Lowland Grainy Frog) at Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve (AHFR), Selangor and Pasoh Forest Reserve (PFR), Negeri Sembilan was carried out from 12 November 2016 to 13 September 2017. The study was to examine data on the morphometric traits of K. palmatissimus at the two forest reserves. 15 morphometric traits of K. palmatissimus that were taken by using vernier calipers. Frog surveys were done by using 15 and 18 nocturnal 400 m transect lines with an interval distance of 20 m at AHFR and PFR, respectively. The GPS coordinates for all frog samples were recorded to ensure the precise geographic location. In addition, five climatic data were recorded. The results showed that most morphometric traits in AHFR (n = 34) and PFR (n = 31) were positively correlated with each other. On the other hand, climatic factor, which was soil pH, had a significant positive influence on most of the morphometric traits (p <.01), except for tympanum diameter and upper eyelid width (p ≥.05). Meanwhile, the temperature had a significantly negative influence on all morphometric traits (p <.01). General linear model (GLM) analysis showed that snout‐vent length (SVL) influenced most morphometric traits (F ≤ 80.86, p <.01), except for hand length (HAL: F = 0.299, p >.05). Later, it was found that the snout‐vent length of K. palmatissimus at AHFR was slightly larger than at PFR (AHFR: μ = 37.00 mm, SE = 1.16 c.f. PFR: μ = 30.29 mm, SE = 1.07). It showed that there were variations in morphometric traits of K. palmatissimus at AHFR and PFR. From PCA analysis, morphometric traits are grouped into two components for AHFR and PFR, respectively. In AHFR, head length, eye diameter, head width, internarial distance, interorbital distance, forearm length, tibia length, foot length, and thigh length were strongly correlated, while snout length and eye‐nostril distance were strongly correlated. In PFR, eye diameter, head width, internarial distance, interorbital distance, foot length, and thigh length were strongly correlated, though snout length and eye‐nostril distance were strongly correlated, hence, suggested that all morphometric traits grow simultaneously in K. palmatissimus with eye‐nostril distance (EN), and snout length (SL) growing almost simultaneously at AHFR (r =.91) and PFR (r =.97). There is still a lack of available information regarding the distribution and morphometric studies of K. palmatissimus in Malaysia, especially at AHFR and PFR. Questions: Macrofungi provide important ecosystem functions and economic value. However, their distributive patterns among woody plant communities and the influence of abiotic factors remain poorly understood. We hypothesized that: (a) the community composition and richness of woody plants are significantly positively correlated with macrofungal community composition and species richness; and (b) in addition to plant effects, abiotic factors (geography and climate) contribute significantly to the variability within macrofungal communities. Location: Northwest (Zhongdian County), west (Baoshan City) and southwest (Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture) Yunnan Province, China. Methods: We investigated macrofungi, woody plants and abiotic factors at 30 plots across three climate types in Yunnan Province, China. We assessed the distributive patterns and driving factors of macrofungal communities in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions. Results: Macrofungal species richness did not significantly increase alongside woody plant species richness, while dissimilarities in macrofungal community compositions across the three climatic regions correlated significantly with woody plant communities, elevation, mean annual precipitation, mean annual temperature, longitude and latitude. Variation partitioning analysis indicated that variations in macrofungal community compositions were explicable by woody plant community composition, as well as by spatial and climatic factors. The Mantel test further revealed that woody plant functional groups shaped macrofungal functional groups. These results indicate that the distribution of macrofungi at the regional scale is mainly affected by woody plant communities, followed by spatial and climatic factors in the three climatic regions. Conclusions: We concluded that dominant woody plant species could be used as indicators of macrofungal community compositions. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is the fatal form of leishmaniasis. A newly emerging focus of zoonotic VL (ZVL) including 13 villages has been reported from Maraveh Tappeh County, Golestan province, north‐eastern Iran. We investigated the effect of climatic and environmental factors on the occurrence of disease in this focus by geographical information systems (GIS) approaches and logistic regression models. The incidence rate of ZVL in human and dog population was estimated 1.2% and 27.3%, respectively, in the studied areas. Rock soil type (OR = 11.7), rainfall (OR = 1.04) and elevation (OR = 0.99) were found as determinants of ZVL. Also, almost all infected villages were in close proximity of rivers. Cavities of rock soil around rivers are assumed as suitable areas for sandfly resting and growth by providing shadow and moisture. Rainfall also provides appropriate moisture in semi‐arid regions for survival of sandflies. The negative effect of higher altitude can be explained by some sandfly life‐limiting conditions like freezing weather. Accordingly, regions with lower altitude and higher rainfall, covered by rock and in close proximity of rivers, are the hazard zones for ZVL in the Maraveh Tappeh. Air humidity, temperature, land cover type and slope were not predictors of disease in the current study. Further investigations on human population movement, probable reservoirs and vectors of disease can provide valuable data for modelling the future distribution of ZVL in the Iranian province. China defined 25 National Key Ecological Function Areas in 2010 and adopted various measures to support ecosystem restoration in these areas. During the process of environment policymaking, it is important to observe the variation of vegetation and its driving factors. In this paper, we chose the National Key Ecological Function Area (NKEFA) on Loess Plateau as the study area. Based on MODIS‐NDVI data between 2000 and 2015, the trend analysis was used to depict the change in NDVI and the stepwise regression analysis method was used to quantitatively assess its determinants. The results show that: (a) The vegetation coverage in study area was low in the northwest and high in the southeast, corresponding to the distribution of precipitation and temperature. (b) NDVI in the growing season increased remarkably from 0.2841 in 2000 to 0.4199 in 2015 with a linear tendency of 0.085/10a. About 71.22% of the study area experienced an extremely significant increasing of NDVI, while only 0.03% of the total area suffered from significant decreasing of NDVI. (c) Compared to climatic factors, ecosystem conservation policies, and labor transfer contributed more to the vegetation changes in the study area. In order to ensure ecological security and sustainable development in these areas, it is necessary to maintain the continuity of ecological compensation policy. Moreover, developing targeted eco‐compensation policies and encouraging farmers to participate in nonfarm employment are effective ways to reach a win–win outcome of reducing the ecosystem pressure and improving the welfare of rural households. This study was aimed to detect the dry matter yield (DMY) trend of whole crop maize (WCM) considering the climatic factors responsible for growth and development of WCM using time series analysis in the Republic of Korea. The dataset consisted of DMY and climatic factors responsible for WCM yield from 1982 to 2011. The stationarity of the DMY was detected using augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) test, whereas the parameters of Autoregressive (AR) and Moving average (MA) were estimated from correlogram of Autocorrelation function (ACF) and partial ACF (PACF). The stationary DMY data was fitted to AR Integrated MA (ARIMA), and based on model selection criterion, ARIMA (2, 0, 1) was detected as the optimal model to describe the DMY trend of WCM. The DMY trend followed the mean of the preceding 2 years and residual of preceding 1 year. ARIMA with exogenous variables (ARIMAX) detected Seeding‐Harvesting Growing Degree Days (SHGDD, °C), Seeding‐Harvesting Rainfall Amount (SHRFA, mm), and Seeding‐Harvesting Rainfall Days (SHRFD, days) as major climatic factors responsible for the DMY trend of WCM. Furthermore, the amount and timing of rainfall found to be an important factor for the observed DMY trend. The fluctuation in the DMY trend implies the need to come up with a holistic approach that include new varieties development and improved agronomic management system to overcome the expected challenge from climate variability. Concerns about air pollutions in China have made fine particulate matter (PM2.5) estimation a hot research topic in recent years. Using satellite‐based PM2.5 data obtained over East China in 2000–2015, climatic factors affecting the PM2.5 variability were revealed in different seasons. Relevant climatic factors were used to estimate seasonal PM2.5 distributions by combining empirical orthogonal function with stepwise regression. The assessment results indicate a greater impact by climatic factors on PM2.5 variability in western East China than over coastal areas, and more significant influence by climatic factors on PM2.5 variability also occurs in summer and autumn than spring and winter. Our favorable results for PM2.5 estimation in 2016 further validate the capability of the estimation method for PM2.5 distributions based on climatic factors. Individual contributions of dominant climatic factors to PM2.5 variability over East China during the past 16 years range from 5% to 30%. In conclusion, climatic factors play nonnegligible roles in modulating PM2.5 concentrations, and they can feasibly be considered as predictors in the estimation of PM2.5 concentrations in East China. Our work underscores the importance of climate change impacts on air pollutions and improves air quality forecasts over East China. Major ions and Sr isotope compositions of waters in the Yalong River basin in the eastern Tibetan plateau were investigated to explore the sources of dissolved loads and the controls on chemical weathering rates. Measured radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr ratios of water samples are most likely derived from the weathering of metamorphic carbonates or the Precambrian silicate rocks. Quantitative analysis of water geochemistry shows that carbonate weathering dominates the chemical characteristics of the river water. The chemical weathering rate of the whole Yalong River basin is calculated to be 7.6 ton·km−2·year−1 by silicate weathering and 44.7 ton·km−2·year−1 by carbonate weathering, which consumes 158.5 × 103 and 885.0 × 103 mol·km−2·year−1 of atmospheric CO2, respectively. The highest carbonate weathering rate (116.3 ton·km−2·year−1) in the Yalong River basins is observed from the basin with the steepest catchment average slope. This highest magnitude of carbonate weathering is comparable to the rates from catchments in the southern Himalayas. Positive relationships are observed between silicate weathering rates and both climatic (precipitation and temperature) and topographic (relief and slope) controls. The combined climatic and tectonic effects increase silicate weathering and counterbalance the dilution effect. However, the relationship between silicate weathering rate and climatic and topographic controls varies with hydrologic conditions. The rate for low‐discharge catchments is more closely related to climatic parameters, while the rate for high‐discharge catchments is more closely related to local topography. The climatic factors have a strong influence on the polluted high voltage (HV) insulators performance and affect the reliability of networks. Such factors can lead to insulation incidents and outages in the electrical network. Based on monthly 12 weather factors observations (the average temperature, the precipitation, the humidity, the solar radiation, the vapour pressure, the snow depth, the dew point, the air pressure, the visibility, the total cloud cover, the wind direction and the wind speed) obtained during the period 2010–2015 (72 months) at Algerian central region, the authors propose an optimal relationship between the number of HV insulators incidents and the climatic factors. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) method was employed to explore the actual and/or delayed (lagged) effect of each climatic factor on HV insulators performance. According to the results, the ARDL approach revealed the existence of strong relationship between these climatic variables and HV insulators incident. Also, the used statistical tests in this study allow us to say whether the proposed model is real and not simply due to chance. No information about hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection in pigs in the northern Mexican state of Durango exists. We determined the seroprevalence and correlates of anti-HEV IgG antibodies in pigs in Durango, Mexico. Through a cross-sectional study, we studied 427 pigs raised in backyards ( n = 328), or slaughtered ( n = 99) in Durango. Sera of pigs were analyzed for anti-HEV IgG antibodies using a commercially available enzyme-linked immunoassay. Antibodies to HEV were found in 193 (45.2%) of the 427 pigs studied. A significantly higher seroprevalence was observed in slaughtered pigs (79.8%) than in backyard pigs (34.8%). Bivariate analysis showed that HEV seropositivity was associated with age, sex, breed, climate, altitude, mean annual temperature, mean annual rainfall, and farm raising. Logistic regression analysis showed that HEV seropositivity was associated with the origin (Sonora State) of pigs (OR=6.51; 95%CI: 3.74-11.32; P < 0.001), and mean annual rainfall (≤600 mm) (OR=1.78; 95%CI: 1.01-3.15; P = 0.04). A high seroprevalence of HEV infection in pigs slaughtered for human consumption in Durango City was found. This is the first report of an association between HEV seropositivity in pigs and climatic factors. Seed longevity derived from artificial ageing experiments has been shown to be related to the macroclimate at the sampling site and with individual seed traits. Nevertheless, the ecological interpretation of artificial seed longevity remains to be clarified. In this article, the ecological significance of seed longevity expressed by the p index was explored using 16 closely related populations of the genus Silene L. Seeds were subjected to an artificial ageing treatment at 45 °C, 60% relative humidity and regularly tested for germination. The decline of viability to 50% (p index) was calculated using probit analysis. Its relationship with known ecological predictors of seed longevity was assessed by multiple regression analysis. Values of p ranged from 3.7 to 68.3 days. Seed lots which normally experience drought during the post-zygotic phase in a dry, warm environment, were long-lived. Consistently, precipitation during the driest months of the reproductive period was the strongest predictor of p variability (partial regression, R = 0.424). We could not find any relationship between ex situ seed longevity and soil seed bank formation or seed size. Our results indicate that ex situ seed longevity has an ecological significance related to long-term climatic differences at population site. Increased longevity presumably reflects resistance to desiccation stress attained by seeds through local adaptation to warm, dry climates. We cannot exclude that seed tolerance to ageing could also represent phenotypic plasticity mediated by a drier maturation environment. The vulnerability of seeds from wet, cool climates and the adaptive response of seed longevity to different environments may have implications for ex situ conservation in the face of climate warming. ABSTRACT Potential evapotranspiration represents the maximum evaporative capacity for a region, which underscores the importance of analysing its changes and attribution to provide information for water resource management. This study focused on the northern Loess Plateau of China, investigated the changes in potential evapotranspiration ( ET0) using data from 34 stations during 1960-2013 and conducted its temporal and spatial attribution through the differentiation equation method. The results show that the annual mean ET0 is 1004.9 mm with a decreasing trend at the rate of 0.33 mm year−1. The lowest values were found in the northeast and southwest regions, while the greatest ET0 was in the northwest region. An 'evaporation paradox' existed as a whole, but not obviously. The ET0 was most sensitive to actual vapour pressure ( ea), followed by solar radiation ( Rs), mean temperature ( Tmean) and wind speed ( U2). The inter-annual variation in the sensitivity of ET0 in relation to climatic factors showed that ET0 became more sensitive to U2 and Tmean but less sensitive to Rs and ea from 1960 to 2013. Temporally, the increasing Tmean resulted in the increase of ET0; while its effect was weakened by the other three factors, especially by decreasing U2. The contributions of climatic factors to the ET0 spatial variation trends were also analysed along two transects, but the dominant factors were different for each transect. The global water cycle has been profoundly affected by human land-water management. As the changes in the water cycle on land can affect the functioning of a wide range of biophysical and biogeochemical processes of the Earth system, it is essential to represent human land-water management in Earth system models ( ESMs). During the recent past, noteworthy progress has been made in large-scale modeling of human impacts on the water cycle but sufficient advancements have not yet been made in integrating the newly developed schemes into ESMs. This study reviews the progresses made in incorporating human factors in large-scale hydrological models and their integration into ESMs. The study focuses primarily on the recent advancements and existing challenges in incorporating human impacts in global land surface models ( LSMs) as a way forward to the development of ESMs with humans as integral components, but a brief review of global hydrological models ( GHMs) is also provided. The study begins with the general overview of human impacts on the water cycle. Then, the algorithms currently employed to represent irrigation, reservoir operation, and groundwater pumping are discussed. Next, methodological deficiencies in current modeling approaches and existing challenges are identified. Furthermore, light is shed on the sources of uncertainties associated with model parameterizations, grid resolution, and datasets used for forcing and validation. Finally, representing human land-water management in LSMs is highlighted as an important research direction toward developing integrated models using ESM frameworks for the holistic study of human-water interactions within the Earths system. Question Measurements of ecosystem carbon (C) exchange are usually labour-intensive and expensive. In peatlands, these temporally and spatially limited measurements are often up-scaled over comparable ecosystems, such as ombrotrophic bogs, to provide an estimate for ecosystem level carbon dioxide ( CO2) fluxes. Peatlands typically have moisture variations reflected in the presence of microforms (e.g. hummocks and hollows), each with characteristic plant life forms. However, so far the applicability of peatland type (e.g. bog, fen) or microforms for up-scaling has not been assessed. Does the vegetation composition or function of associated species differ so greatly between the same types of peatland that up-scaling is impossible? Location Five ombrotrophic bogs in Northern Europe; in Ireland, Finland and western Russia. Methods We described the variation in vegetation of microforms within and between ombrotrophic bogs using multivariate analyses. Thereafter, we measured CO2 exchange at different microforms and evaluated the relationship between vegetation structure and the light response of photosynthesis. Results Our results show that the community composition of hummocks, lawns and hollows was rather uniform at the plant life-form level. The photosynthetic capacity per leaf area unit was quite similar within microform classes over the different bogs. The observed differences between sites in capacity were mainly related to variation in leaf area. Conclusions A reliable estimate of ecosystem-level photosynthesis requires knowledge of the proportion of different microforms in an area and the leaf area characteristics for each microform in the year(s) in question. Assessments of ecosystem-level photosynthesis are important with regard to current and future changes in climate, as the most dramatic changes in peatlands involve water level drawdown, which in turn is likely to lead to changes in the relative proportions of microforms within peatlands. ABSTRACT The thermal environment in urban areas is substantially influenced by local surface properties and their modification through human activities. The effects of urban climate on human health are one of the motivations for the development of various urban climate analysis tools. Climate Analysis Seoul ( CAS) is a tool that incorporates a meso-scale atmospheric model and conceptual geographic information system ( GIS)-based models to provide gridded air temperature deviations based on high-resolution land cover information. The CAS output was evaluated using air temperatures observed at 18 automatic weather stations ( AWS) located in the detail region ( DR) Eunpyeong. Correlation analyses were performed to reveal the influence of different land cover characteristics and CAS output variables on measured air temperature deviations. Based on the results of the correlation analyses in the study region ( SR) Seoul, a regression model (total air temperature distribution, TD′) was developed. It predicts spatially distributed air temperatures based on morphological parameters and an observed reference temperature. Using the TD′ model, maps of daily maximum air temperatures were produced for the entire area of Seoul with a horizontal resolution of 25 m, and of 5 m for the DR, the latter allows to assess the impacts of different building and vegetation structures on air temperature by resolving buildings. The TD′ model was evaluated using measurements at eight AWS. The TD′ model slightly overestimated daily maximum air temperatures in 2007 and 2011, but performed better for 2011, mainly because land cover data represent the final state of the urban development. The TD′ model appears to be a suitable tool for estimating air temperature distributions at building-resolving resolutions. The effects of terrain, soil moisture heterogeneity, subsurface properties, and water table dynamics on the development and behavior of the atmospheric boundary layer are studied through a set of idealized numerical experiments. The mesoscale atmospheric model Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) is used to isolate the effects of subsurface heterogeneity, terrain, and soil moisture initialization. The simulations are initialized with detailed soil moisture distributions obtained from offline spin-ups using a coupled surface-subsurface model (ParFlow-CLM). In these idealized simulations, we observe that terrain effects dominate the planetary boundary layer (PBL) development during early morning hours, while the soil moisture signature overcomes that of terrain during the afternoon. Water table and subsurface properties produce a similar effect as that of soil moisture as their signatures (reflected in soil moisture profiles, energy fluxes, and evaporation at the land surface) can also overcome that of terrain during afternoon hours. This is mostly clear for land surface energy fluxes and evaporation at the land surface. We also observe the coupling between water table depth and planetary boundary layer depth in our cases is strongest within wet-to-dry transition zones. This extends the findings of previous studies which demonstrate the subsurface connection to surface energy fluxes is strongest in such transition zones. Recently, several rockfish species (genus Sebastes) have been reported to be soniferous. To determine whether an additional rockfish species produces sounds, passive acoustic recordings were analyzed from captive marbled rockfish ( Sebastiscus marmoratus) during the non-spawning season. Three distinct sounds were identified based on frequency features. The common characteristics among all sounds were low frequency (below 300 Hz) and rapidly dampened pulses consisting of 3-5 acoustic energy cycles. During free-swimming conditions in the canvas tank, the fish produced voluntary sounds with lower frequencies than the disturbance sounds produced by individuals during prodding. Two types of sounds were identified in the disturbance context: one type consists of single or double pulses with two peak frequencies, and another type consists of a series of pulses with a single peak frequency. These results suggest that specific-species and behavior-associated sounds are potentially useful in passive acoustical surveys to monitor rockfish populations and distributions remotely. ABSTRACT Vegetation is sensitive to changes in the ecological environment in arid and semiarid regions, so information on the dynamics of vegetation cover changes can provide important information for ecological environmental protection and early warning of ecosystem degradation. With the SPOT/VEGETATION normalised difference vegetation index dataset of the typical semiarid land in Inner Mongolia (IM) during 1998-2008, this study applied an integrated statistical method combing asymmetric Gaussian filtering, seasonal Kendall test, R/S analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis, to investigate the impact of climatic factors on trends in vegetation cover. The main findings are as follows: (1) Over the 1998-2008 period, the vegetation coverage is relatively stable in IM, with only 24.5% of the total area exhibiting a significant variation in cover. The spatial distribution of the vegetation cover change has the following regional characteristics: in the northeast forest region, the vegetation cover is stable; in the middle steppe region, significant changes are observed and in the southwest desert region, the vegetation exhibits significant degradation. (2) Normalised difference vegetation index time series in most regions of IM reveal a vegetation change trend. In the high vegetation covered regions, the change trend will be reversed, whereas in the low vegetation covered regions, the original change trend will be preserved. We studied the altitudinal patterns of plant species richness and examined the effects of geometric constraints, area, and climatic factors on the observed richness patterns along the ridge of the Baekdudaegan Mountains, South Korea. Rapoport's altitudinal rule was evaluated by examining the relationship between altitudinal range size and midpoint. We also examined the latitudinal effect on species richness. Plant data were collected from 1,100 plots along a 200-1,900 m altitudinal gradient along the ridge of the Baekdudaegan. A total of 802 plant species from 97 families and 342 genera were found. The altitudinal patterns of plant species richness along the ridge of the Baekdudaegan depicted distinctly hump-shaped patterns, although the absolute altitudes of the richness peaks vary somewhat among plant groups. While the mid-domain effect (MDE) was the most powerful explanatory variable in simple regression models, species richness was also associated with climatic factors, especially mean annual precipitation (MAP) and temperature (MAT) in multiple regression models. The relative importance of the MDE and climatic factors were different among plant groups. The MDE was more important for woody plants and for large-ranged species, whereas climatic factors were better predictors for total and herbaceous plants and for small-ranged species. Rapoport's altitudinal rule and a latitudinal effect on species richness were not supported. Anticipated climate change will alter the temperature and rainfall characteristics of crop growing seasons. This will require genetic improvement of crops for adapting to future climates for higher yields. The CROPGRO model for groundnut was used to evaluate genetic traits of Virginia and Spanish types of groundnut for various climate scenarios of India. The analysis revealed that productivity of groundnut can be increased in current and future climates by adjusting the duration of various life-cycle phases, especially the seed-filling to physiological maturity ( SD- PM). Increased maximum leaf photosynthesis rate ( AMAX), increased partitioning to reproductive organs ( XFRT) and increased individual seed-fill duration ( SFDUR) all contributed to the increase in pod yield in all climates. More determinate pod set (shorter PODUR) was beneficial only in the water deficit environments. The positive effect of increasing specific leaf area ( SLA) and leaf size ( SIZLF) on pod yield was greater in environments more favourable for plant growth. Increasing reproductive tolerance to high temperature by 2 °C increased pod yield of groundnut in warmer environments, especially where the crop often suffers from drought. Increased adaptive partitioning to roots ( ATOP) increased drought resistance of groundnut on high water-holding capacity soils. Combination of traits had additive effects and pod yield increased substantially. These results indicate that the CROPGRO model can be used to assess the potential of individual or combination of plant traits for guiding breeding of improved groundnut varieties for current and future climates. The habitat use and movements of the round stingray Urobatis halleri were compared between shallow restored and natural habitats of the Anaheim Bay Estuary (CA, U.S.A.) in relation to water temperature. Restored habitat remained significantly warmer than natural habitat from spring through to autumn. Strong sexual segregation occurred in the restored habitat with mature female U. halleri forming large unisex aggregations in summer, during months of peak seasonal water temperatures, and males only present during spring. Most mature females collected from restored habitat during months of high abundance were determined to be pregnant using non-invasive field ultrasonography. Tagged females typically spent <14 days in the restored habitat, using the habitat less as seasonal water temperatures decreased. Females tended to emigrate from the estuary by mid-August, coinciding with the time of year for parturition. The elevated water temperatures of the restored habitat may confer an energetic cost to male U. halleri, but females (particularly pregnant females) may derive a thermal reproductive benefit by using warm, shallow habitats for short periods of time during months of peak water temperatures. These findings have management implications for the design of coastal habitat restoration projects and marine protected areas that incorporate thermal environments preferred by aggregating female elasmobranchs. Life-history parameters of Deania calcea and Deania quadrispinosa suggested that their productivity was very low. Maturity ( LT50) occurs at c. 80% of maximum observed total lengths ( LT) for both species and sexes. A large proportion of mature females were neither pre-ovulatory nor pregnant, and the reproductive cycle included a distinct resting phase after pregnancy. For D. calcea, mean ovarian fecundity was 12 and maximum observed litter size was 10 (average of six); D. quadrispinosa averaged 17 pups per litter. Birth LT was 28-33 cm for D. calcea and 23-25 cm for D. quadrispinosa. The male and female reproductive cycles were aseasonal, and consequently, the length of the reproductive cycle could not be determined. Preliminary ageing data from dorsal-spine growth bands suggested that female D. calcea lived to 31-36 years and males to 24-32 years. The LT-at-age data using external bands on the spines showed maturity occurring at 15·5 years (males) and 21·5 years (females), whereas banding on the internal dentine indicated maturity at 10·5 and 17·5 years for males and females. Thus, a female lifetime of 31-36 years allowed for a maximum of 7 litters if a 2 year cycle is assumed or only five litters with a 3 year cycle, resulting in a lifetime fecundity of only 42 pups (2 year cycle) or even lower (3 year cycle). Summary 1. Riparian plant communities are primarily structured by the hydrological regime of the stream. Models of climate change predict increased temperatures and changed patterns of precipitation that will alter the flow of rivers and streams with consequences for riparian communities. In boreal regions of Europe, stream flows will exhibit earlier spring-flood peaks of lower magnitude, lower summer flows and higher flows in autumn and winter. We quantified the effects of predicted hydrological change on riparian plant species richness, using four different scenarios for the free-flowing Vindel River in northern Sweden. 2. We calculated the hydrological niche of vegetation belts by relating the occurrence of species and vegetation belts to data on flood duration for 10 years preceding the vegetation survey. We then used the flood duration predicted for 2071-2100 to estimate expected changes in the extent of each vegetation belt. Using species accumulation curves, we then predicted changes in plant species richness as a result of changes in extent. 3. The two most species-rich vegetation belts, riparian forest and willow shrub, were predicted to decrease most in elevational extent, up to 39 and 32%, respectively. The graminoid belt below the shrub belt will mainly shift upwards in elevation while the amphibious vegetation belt at the bottom of the riparian zone increases in size. 4. In the Vindel River, the riparian forest and willow shrub zone will lose most species, with reductions of 5-12% and 1-13% per site, respectively, depending on the scenario. The predicted loss from the entire riparian zone is lower, 1-9%, since many species occur in more than one vegetation belt. More extensive species losses are expected in the southern boreal zone for which much larger spring-flood reductions are projected. 5. With an expected reduction in area of the most species-rich belts, it becomes increasingly important to manage and protect riparian zones to alleviate other threats, thus minimising the risk of species losses. Analysis of monthly coastal upwelling intensities revealed two seasonal and biologically relevant upwelling 'modes' in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE). The first mode reflected upwelling during the summer months and was characterized by low-frequency (multidecadal) processes, including significant (Po0.01) linear trends at some latitudes. In contrast, the second mode reflected wintertime upwelling and was defined by higher-frequency variability associated with the North Pacific High and El Niño Southern Oscillation events. These modes were compared with multidecadal time series of splitnose rockfish (Sebastes diploproa) otolith growth, yelloweye rockfish (S. ruberrimus) otolith growth, Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) scale growth, and indices of Cassin's auklet (Ptychoramphus aleuticus) and common murre (Uria aalge) reproduction in the central-northern CCE. In redundancy and correlation analyses, salmon growth and Cassin's auklet fledgling success associated with the summer upwelling mode while all other time series associated with the winter upwelling mode, indicating that CCE biology was differentially sensitive to these seasonal upwelling patterns. Thus, upwelling occurred in unrelated seasonal modes with contrasting trends, atmospheric forcing mechanisms, and impacts on the biology of the CCE, underscoring the importance of seasonality when evaluating ecosystem response to climate variability and change. Because species-specific interactions between plants and insects require considerable physiological adaptations to establish and be maintained through time and space, highly specialized interactions are rare in nature. Consequently, even if some one-to-one interactions might appear locally specialized, additional partners may be involved at a wider scale. Here, we investigate the geographical constancy in the specificity level of the specialized lure-and-trap pollination antagonism involving the widespread European Arum maculatum and its associated Psychodid pollinators. Until now, studies concurred in demonstrating that one single insect species, Psychoda phalaenoides, efficiently cross-pollinated plants; researches were, however, performed locally in western Europe. In this study we characterize for the first time the flower visitors' composition at the scale of the distribution range of A. maculatum by intensively collecting plants and insects throughout the European continent. We further correlate local climatic characteristics with the community composition of visiting arthropods. Our results show that flowers are generally visited by P. phalaenoides females, but not over the whole distribution range of the plant. In some regions this fly species is less frequent or even absent and another species, Psycha grisescens, becomes the prevailing visitor. This variability is geographically structured and can be explained by climatic factors: the proportion of P. grisescens increases with higher annual precipitations and lower precipitations in the warmest trimester, two characteristics typical of the Mediterranean zone. Climate thus seems driving the specificity of this interaction, by potentially affecting the phenology of one or both interacting species, or even of volatile and heat production in the plant. This result therefore challenges the specificity of other presumably one-to-one interactions covering wide distribution ranges, and provides an example of the direct effect that the abiotic environment can have on the fate of plant-insect interactions. The seasonal dynamics of biological traits in a population of European bitterling Rhodeus amarus from a small river in central Europe (River Kyjovka, Czech Republic) were investigated from April 2007 to March 2008. The reproductive season lasted from early April to mid-June, with a peak in late April when > 50% of females possessed ripe eggs in their ovaries. The sex ratio was female-biased, with a higher bias following the peak in reproduction, suggesting higher mortality of males than females over the reproductive period. The population was effectively annual, with a major decrease in adult fish abundance at the end of the reproductive period. Highest relative lipid content and condition factor were observed in February, both decreasing with an increase in investment into gonads. Seasonal dynamics in somatic condition, relative lipid content and gonad mass, and their comparison with other R. amarus populations, suggest that the study population allocated a disproportionally high level of resources to reproduction. Hatching failure within clutches of eggs occurs to varying degrees in many avian species. We investigated predictors of hatching failure in a population of Florida Scrub-Jays, for which hatching success has been monitored for 15 years. We assessed whether hatching failure was related to parental traits (e.g. age, experience as a pair or body condition), lay date, social structure (e.g. number of helpers), environmental conditions, or some combination of these. We used linear mixed models and Akaike's information criterion to determine the models that best explain observed patterns of hatching failure. The best model showed that increased hatching failure was associated with below-average rainfall during the breeding season, and was more common for newly established breeding pairs than for pairs that had previously produced one or more clutches together. Other contributing models suggested that hatching failure was greatest for the youngest and oldest female breeders. Some aspects of our findings are consistent with conclusions drawn from other species. However, as a whole, our analyses suggest that hatching failure in the Florida Scrub-Jay is influenced by a complex set of environmental and parental factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on climatic and geographical factors that affect the chemical and isotopic elements of precipitation in Syria. The study was conducted within the 13 meteoric stations in Syria such as Izraa and Tartous. Results showed that the deuterium excess (d-excess) is low in the north of Syria with19.9% recorded d-excess at Tartous while 18.1% at Jarablous. The study also revealed that Mediterranean water vapor is the main source of precipitation in nearby countries of Syria.

To investigate mites in the dust of air-conditioner filters (MACF) in China, a total of 652 dust samples were collected from six cities: Guangzhou ( n = 129), Nanchang ( n = 127), Shanghai ( n = 113), Xian ( n = 93), Beijing ( n = 93), and Shenyang ( n = 79). Tarsonemus granarius was the most dominant species (87.2%). Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae only represented 7.0 and 3.0% of total mites, respectively. With latitude increasing, both mite occurrence rate ( P < 0.001) and density (mites/g dust) ( P < 0.001) were significantly decreasing. Multivariate regression analysis suggested that the annual average temperature and minimum temperature in different cities had dominant influences on MACF density. The logistic regression analysis revealed that the presence of MACF was positively associated with air-conditioner age, utilization time and power. Wall and window type air-conditioner had higher risk of finding MACF than the floor type air-conditioner. As far as the cleaning interval time of ACF was concerned, higher risk ratio and the highest density of MACF were found in the time stage of >3, ≤12 months. It was also suggested that house type could influence the presence of MACF. A negative association between the house floor and the MACF prevalence was found as well. Practical Implications Mites present in the dust of air-conditioner filters are potential indoor threat to asthma and allergy sufferers. In this study, we find that the storage mite Tarsonemus granarius is the predominant species of mites in the dust of air-conditioner filters (MACF). Thus, the possible clinical importance of T. granarius should cause more our attentions in the future. The abundance and distribution of MACF are also found significantly varied in different climatic regions of China. When we try to assess the possible risk of MACF, more attentions should be focused on subtropical region than temperate region. The influence analysis of environmental characteristics on the prevalence of MACF will shed light on the establishment of mite control strategy and the design of mite defense air-conditioner. This study provides a novel systematic comparative analysis of the species characteristics affecting the range margin shifts in butterflies towards higher latitudes, while taking phylogenetic relatedness among species into account. We related observed changes in the northern range margins of 48 butterfly species in Finland between two time periods (1992–1996 and 2000–2004) to 11 species traits. Species with positive records in at least ten 10 km × 10 km grid squares (in the Finnish National Butterfly Recording Scheme, NAFI) in both periods were included in the study. When corrected for range size change, the 48 butterfly species had shifted their range margins northwards on average by 59.9 km between the study periods, with maximum shifts of over 300 km for three species. This rate of range shifts exceeds all previously reported records worldwide. Our findings may be explained by two factors: the study region is situated in higher latitudes than in most previous studies and it focuses on the period of most prominent warming during the last 10–15 years. Several species traits exhibited a significant univariate relationship with the range margin shift according to generalized estimation equations (GEE) taking into account the phylogenetic relatedness among species. Nonthreatened butterflies had on average expanded their ranges strongly northwards (84.5 km), whereas the distributions of threatened species were stationary (−2.1 km). Hierarchical partitioning (HP) analysis indicated that mobile butterflies living in forest edges and using woody plants as their larval hosts exhibited largest range shifts towards the north. Thus, habitat availability and dispersal capacity of butterfly species are likely to determine whether they will be successful in shifting their ranges in response to the warming climate. For regional models, the shallow water table surface is often used as a source/sink boundary condition, as model grid scale precludes simulation of the water table aquifer. This approach is appropriate when the water table surface is relatively stationary. Since water table surface maps are not readily available, the elevation of the water table used in model cells is estimated via a two-step process. First, a regression equation is developed using existing land and water table elevations from wells in the area. This equation is then used to predict the water table surface for each model cell using land surface elevation available from digital elevation models (DEM). Two methods of processing DEM for estimating the land surface for each cell are commonly used (value nearest the cell centroid or mean value in the cell). This article demonstrates how these two methods of DEM processing can affect the simulated water budget. For the example presented, approximately 20% more total flow through the aquifer system is simulated if the centroid value rather than the mean value is used. This is due to the one-third greater average ground water gradients associated with the centroid value than the mean value. The results will vary depending on the particular model area topography and cell size. The use of the mean DEM value in each model cell will result in a more conservative water budget and is more appropriate because the model cell water table value should be representative of the entire cell area, not the centroid of the model cell. Climate warming is pronounced in the Arctic and migratory birds are expected to be among the most affected species. We examined the effects of local and regional climatic variations on the breeding phenology and reproductive success of greater snow geese ( Chen caerulescens atlantica), a migratory species nesting in the Canadian Arctic. We used a long-term dataset based on the monitoring of 5447 nests and the measurements of 19 234 goslings over 16 years (1989–2004) on Bylot Island. About 50% of variation in the reproductive phenology of individuals was explained by spring climatic factors. High mean temperatures and, to a lesser extent, low snow cover in spring were associated with an increase in nest density and early egg-laying and hatching dates. High temperature in spring and high early summer rainfall were positively related to nesting success. These effects may result from a reduction in egg predation rate when the density of nesting geese is high and when increased water availability allows females to stay close to their nest during incubation recesses. Summer brood loss and production of young at the end of the summer increased when values of the summer Arctic Oscillation (AO) index were either very positive (low temperatures) or very negative (high temperatures), indicating that these components of the breeding success were most influenced by the regional summer climate. Gosling mass and size near fledging were reduced in years with high spring temperatures. This effect is likely due to a reduced availability of high quality food in years with early spring, either due to food depletion resulting from high brood density or a mismatch between hatching date of goslings and the timing of the peak of plant quality. Our analysis suggests that climate warming should advance the reproductive phenology of geese, but that high spring temperatures and extreme values of the summer AO index may decrease their reproductive success up to fledging.
