The goal of this text is to write down and extend the questions and answers that have been prepared for the Podcast Code for Thought registered in May 2023 at the Laboratoire d’informatique Gaspard-Monge (LIGM), located at the Gustave Eiffel University, at the Est of Paris. This podcast goal was to have an informal conversation about the recent published work on Research Software and Research Data in the Open Science context by T. Gomez-Diaz and T. Recio. The interview was conducted by Peter Schmidt, who provided the questions we do answer here, and that were answered by T. Gomez-Diaz in the recorded podcast. The aim of this paper is to investigate the perceptions of learning analytics researchers in Peru about the barriers to publication of their research data. A review of the relevant legislation was done. Semi-structured interviews were used as a research method, the focus being on the presumed conflict between the publication of research data and the protection of personal data. The results show a range of individual factors that influence the behaviour of scientists in relation to the publication of research data, emphasizing the barriers related to data protection in different disciplines., This article was presented within the framework of LALA 2020 (III Latin American Conference on Learning Analytics)

Digital access to social sciences and humanities (SSH) research resources is necessary to enable broad use. For this purpose, a discovery platform for SSH resources was created. This paper describes its development, based on user, economic, and computer science research methods, and illustrates how such a platform supports social exchange.

Legal issues, especially copyright and personal data protection, are an important consideration in many areas of digital humanities. With a global perspective, this panel features speakers with expertise in legal issues in DH, to discuss longstanding legal issues which can aid or restrict DH research and update the DH community with analysis of new legal developments.

The National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) has completed an investigation into the implementation of standardised research data usage metrics as part of the ARDC-funded National Data Assets Project impact/outcome monitoring systems work package. The NCI THREDDS data service was used as a case study for the implementation of COUNTER RD usage statistics. To better support usage statistics reporting in future, a number of design principles and NCI development priorities were identified. In addition, the project assessed the ability of the COUNTER RD standard to capture the complexity of data usage via HPC facilities., The Geophysics 2030 project received co-investment from AuScope and the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) to support the data curation at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI Australia) (https://doi.org/10.47486/XN002). Since 2019, the national Borealis community of institutional administrators supports researchers locally with data curation, deposit, sharing, and preservation in Borealis, the Canadian Dataverse Repository (https://borealisdata.ca). Through monthly, bilingual community meetings, special presentations, and training events, the community engages in open knowledge sharing, discussions, and practical training, to support and improve services related to areas of shared interest across all institutions using the repository. Highlights over the past year include a new joiners training session, API training, community presentations related to Re3data repository registration efforts, data preservation, discovery of research data, an upcoming survey of administrators, data licensing, and more. The motivation for strong community engagement relates to responding to community needs and is a model for community building that fosters a culture of open dialogue and collaboration. This presentation was a lightning talk for the 2023 Dataverse Community Meeting, held in person in Braga, Portugal in June 2023.

Researchers in cultural studies disciplines and cultural institutions are increasingly confronted with the need to sustainably secure their digital research data. In this presentation, we outlined different approaches that have been developed in order to provide scholars with an infrastructure and sustainable support throughout the data life circle. We presented different solutions and examples on how open and FAIR research data is being managed in the humanities. The presentation took place on 19 June 2023 and was part of the event series "Open for you! An introduction series to open science II" organized by the 4EU+ University Alliance.

Since 2001 the University of Glasgow has developed and built its open repositories infrastructure, Enlighten, using the EPrints.org open source software. During that time, it has grown from a single publication’s repository to a network of interconnected repositories which underpin and support open research at the university. The early principles for Enlighten were around re-use and interoperability across university systems, to reduce duplication and ensure more consistency. This presentation will highlight how our repositories have enacted these principles to sit at the heart of a range of systems and processes. This began with staff publications and funder data through the Enrich project in 2010. They now include publications for performance & development reviews and promotion, the capture of esteem, REF submission, our Research Output KPI, Open Access compliance, and research data storage.. Enlighten also plays a key role supporting our broader commitment to ‘open’ at Glasgow. The dynamic work over the last 12 years has enabled us to unlock our rich content and continues to highlight the value of our open repository infrastructure and teams. It has also provided a firm foundation for us to ensure that our repository is not an island, “entire of itself”.

Der Vortrag konzentriert sich auf die Anforderungen des Datenschutzes beim Umgang mit (sensiblen) personenbezogenen Daten. Was sind die wichtigsten Pflichten von Forscher*innen im Umgang mit personenbezogenen Daten (z.B. informierte Einwilligung)? Welche grundlegenden Maßnahmen sind bei der Arbeit mit personenbezogenen Daten notwendig (z.B. Anonymisierung, Pseudonymisierung)? Gibt es besondere Erlaubnisse für die Datenverarbeitung zu Forschungszwecken (z. B. Auskunfts- und Widerspruchsrecht, Archivierung, Veröffentlichung)? We will present a standards-based generalized architecture for large-scale repositories for research and preservation illustrated with real world examples drawn from a number of languages and cultural archive projects. This work is taking place in the context of the Australian Humanities and Social Sciences Research Data Commons, particularly the Language Data component thereof and the long-established PARADISEC cultural archive. The standards used include the Oxford Common File Layout for storage, Research Object CRATE (RO-Crate) for consistent linked-data description of FAIR digital objects, and a language data metadata profile to ensure long-term interoperability between systems and re-usability over time. We also discuss data licensing and authorization for access to non-open resources. We suggest that the approach shown here may be used in other disciplines or for other kinds of digital library, repository or archival systems.

An Open Repositories 2019 panel discussed the barriers to engagement with communities who create non-text research outputs. Repositories continue to adapt to better capture and describe this research however it is still an ‘ad on’ activity to the mainstream approach to research dissemination, where the primary focus is retrospective capture of products, rather than exploration of research processes. The lack of agreed standards for practice research makes it challenging to articulate to the open standards community what this research looks like. Bulley & Sahin (2021) provided useful definitions that have enabled discussion across practice research disciplines (and their vocabularies) and intersecting communities. The Practice Research Voices (PRVoices) project built on these recommendations articulating a framework to capture individual objects on an ongoing basis, bringing them together (collection), in the form of a portfolio (theme) to overlay narrative and context. This definition enables engagement with open standards, so practice research communities can benefit from improved interoperability and discoverability. This panel discussion session will highlight a range of voices with an interest in broadening inclusion of practice research in the wider open standards landscape, enabling all those in the intersectional practice research community to benefit.

Research Object Crate (RO-Crate) is a community effort and specification to practically achieve FAIR packaging of research objects (digital objects like data, methods, software) with structured metadata and context. RO-Crate uses well-established Web standards and FAIR principles. For common metadata representations, RO-Crate builds on schema.org, a mature and general mark-up vocabulary used by search engines, including Google Dataset Search. RO-Crate is adopted by many research projects as a pragmatic implementation of the FAIR principles that can be both general for interoperable exchange and extensible for domain-specific archiving. RO-Crate development began in early 2019, when a workshop at Open Repositories 2019 in Hamburg generated a significant number of use-cases and expressions of interest from the OR community. This presentation will introduce RO-Crate, its continuing development and rapid adoption since 2019, report on how it is now being used in repository software, and the potential for further use in repository platforms that will be familiar to OR attendees.

The Dataverse Project is an open source web application to share, preserve, cite, explore, and analyze research data. It facilitates making data available to others, and allows you to replicate others' work more easily. Researchers, journals, data authors, publishers, data distributors, and affiliated institutions all receive academic credit and web visibility. With 93 installations around the world, The Dataverse software is at the forefront of research knowledge dissemination. This workshop will demonstrate best practices in depositing and curating content in a Dataverse repository.

Data management plans (DMPs) and research data repositories are essential parts of modern research. At TU Wien and TU Graz we have built up institutional research data repositories and online tools for managing DMPs. Both of these systems can help our researchers with different parts of their research data’s life-cycles. However, without communication between these services, some information has to be entered multiple times across these systems which can lead to frustration and errors. We aim to improve this user experience pain point by creating a channel for sharing information between these systems. By utilizing the RDA DMP Common Standard for machine-actionable DMPs for the communication, we want to extract a general communication protocol out of the prototypes that can be implemented for other research data repositories and DMP tools as well.

Cultural Collections as Challenging Research Data in Small States: the Case of Latvia Jānis Daugavietis Sanita Reinsone The Institute for Literature, Folklore and Art at the University of Latvia DARIAH Annual Event 2023 - Cultural Heritage Data as Humanities Research Data? (June 7 - 9, 2023, Budapest) Keywords: small states, open science, research data, digital research infrastructures, convergence Research (and statistics) indicate that despite recent improvements the Latvian humanities and arts community in general still lacks awareness and understanding of contemporary open science and is not particularly supportive of open science practices (Bite et al 2020, Daugavietis et al 2022, Reinsone et al 2023). This phenomenon can be attributed to a multitude of reasons, the main ones being one of the lowest levels of R&D funding in the European Union and the lag in the implementation of national science policy in this domain. Roadmap adopted in 2016[1]. The academic community in the field of humanities is just starting to grasp the notion of “research data” and necessary management it requires, while it remains unfamiliar to most cultural heritage institutions and public cultural administration. There is a risk that the differences between the two communities' attitudes towards cultural heritage collections as humanities research data will remain significant, as most of the state heritage institutions are under the supervision of the Ministry of Education and Science, while state and local heritage institutions are under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. This is the first year since the Latvian Science Council (the national science grant distributor) started asking for DMPs, thus familiarising scientists with this practice[2]. As participation of Latvian humanities and arts researchers in large international research projects (e.g. H2020) is rare, the community also has virtually no such indirect experience of working with archiving and publishing FAIR data. In the field of humanities, there is only one data repository in Latvia, created in 2022 – https://repository.clarin.lv (about 70 datasets). The development of digital research infrastructures continues to pose a persistent challenge. Although some progress has been made and there are a sparse examples across several research disciplines, including operation of national CLARIN ERIC repository in recent years and the joining of one institution as a cooperating partner in DARIAH-EU last year, the overall development of digital research infrastructures in Latvia remains deficient. This holds true for the social sciences as well. Of the 25 EU ERICs[3], Latvia participates in 8 (humsoc – ESS ERIC and CLARIN). In comparative political science, the notion of small states is often employed to argue that the process of socio-economic development in small countries differs from that of larger countries (Baldacchino & Wivel 2020; Chodak 1989; Katzenstein 1985). Smallness can be both a hindrance and a help. Small countries are more vulnerable because they have fewer resources. At the same time, it encourages international and regional cooperation; communication with public institutions is more informal; mobility and communication is easier with small geographical distances and small interest groups (Katzenstein 2003). Latvia, with a population less than 2 million and an even smaller Latvian-speaking community, is such a case. The attributes of a small and economically challenged country may shape other optimal scenarios for the development of research data repositories and research infrastructures in general. The research community in such states is commonly limited in size, with a scarcity of research institutions in each field, and characterized by a lack of inner competitiveness. Furthermore, the geographical distances within the country are relatively modest, academic research is predominantly concentrated in the capital city. The administration of science and culture is centralized but both fields are operating independently from one another. The main question this paper seeks to address, with Latvia being the main focus and other small countries being used for comparison, is: which of the above mentioned and other characteristics of a small state facilitate or hinder the EU’s science and culture policy objectives, specifically, the implementation of open science principles and the complete digitisation and accessibility of cultural heritage? From the EU's perspective and practice to date, the ambition to build multi-sectoral digital infrastructures in small countries is unrealistic. Not only in individual countries, but even at international level, there is a convergence of humanities and social sciences research infrastructures (EOSC, SSHOC). The experience of small countries shows that there is often a strong overlap between the DARIAH and CLARIN communities, e.g. CESSDA and ESS. This is also the situation in Latvia and the choice of the Latvian science policy to create one research data infrastructure for the humanities and social sciences. At the beginning of 2022, a consortium of 4 major universities – “Higher Education and Science Information Technology Shared Services Centre” (https://www.vpc.lv/about) – was established at the initiative of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia. The plan also includes the creation of a national repository of humanities and social sciences research data (on DataVerse), as well as the creation of a data stewardship system. Progress is slow. Meanwhile, The Institute for Literature, Folklore and Art at the University of Latvia, one of the few leading Latvian DH institutions also active in the CLARIN community, as Cooperating Partner joins DARIAH this May[4]. For 20 years, Persée has been the French operator for scientific literature heritage digitization and online dissemination. Persée currently has a 34 people team, involved in publishing, technical and scientific projects, and working over a fully-fledged paper-to-digital document processing chain. So far Persée has produced : - a web portal (standard digital library) ; - a triplestore (linked open metadata outlet) ; - 5 ‘perséides’ (project-specific online corpora). Alongside the perseides which are the result of a co-design process, Persée has been providing legacy (meta)data to digital humanists for whom data science and computational methods, not to mention AI/ML, have become standard practice. Since ‘Collections as data designed for everyone serve no one’ (The Santa Barbara Statement on Collections as Data, 2017), Persée has implemented various methods to ensure the fitness for use, including quality checks, user feedback analysis, co-design. Yet, the same questions eventually arise again: 'Can yesterday’s data fulfil today’s researchers’ needs? What are these needs? How can we ascertain quality?’. Taking our part in the collaboration of library science, computer science and humanities working together with digital cultural heritage (Oberbichler et al., 2022), we saw fit to extend customer study. Drawing up explicitly the Persée FAIR Implementation Profile (Schultes et al., 2020), mapping visually user types and data dissemination channels, then applying graph analysis, makes it possible to highlight critical nodes, popular use cases and intensive use areas. Moreover, modelling a typical data reuse process makes it possible to (re)locate occurrences of data friction (Edwards et al., 2011). Besides, to our knowledge, few are the summary papers about OCR quality for so called ‘downstream tasks’ (van Strien et al., 2020) in an otherwise abundant literature since Holley's OCR accuracy categories (Holley, 2009). Setting up a dedicated process of literature review, we found that : - some tasks, like part-of-speech tagging and NER, seem more affected by OCR quality than others ; - the performance of a task might relate to specific ranges of OCR quality metrics, although the matter, still open to question, largely depends on the chosen task, language, metrics, and deserves to be explored further. The introduction of graph study, process modelling and literature review has proved useful to qualify usage more accurately and to get a better scope of the corresponding quality dimensions and metrics. We argue that, for lack of a one-stop standard, such endeavours could help to : - formulate project-specific data reuse strategies : using data ‘as-is’, counterbalancing defects with smarter processing, applying post-production corrections ; - tackle the ubiquitous topic of data quality more effectively : finetuning supply and services, avoiding the ‘garbage in, garbage out’ effect in research projects, closing the data lifecycle by re-ingesting the research output., English text revised by Matthew Glasgow and Monica Roman

Der vorliegende deutschsprachige Leitfaden zur Planung eines psychologie-spezifischen FDM-Kurs entstandim Rahmen des von der DFG 2020-23 geförderten Projekts FDNext. Er richtet sich zuvorderst anMultiplikator*innen (Doktorand*innen, PostDocs, forschungsunterstützendes Personal, usw.) aus dem Fachbereich Psychologie, denen er ein fachbezogenes Instrument zur Kompetenzentwicklung im Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) an die Hand gibt. Zu diesem Zweck wurden zahlreiche, für die Psychologie relevante Aspekte des FDM zusammengetragen und in das generische FDM-Train-the-Trainer-Konzept (Version 4) des durch den BMBFgeförderten Vorgänger-Projektes FDMentorintegriert, das nach Projektende durch Mitglieder der UAG Schulungen/Fortbildungen der DINI/nestor-AG Forschungsdaten ergänzt und aktualisiert wurde.. Für die umfangreiche Vorarbeit hinsichtlich Konzeption, Umsetzung und Evaluation des generischen Train-the-Trainer-Konzeptes (Doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5773203), ohne dem das vorliegende Konzept gar nicht möglich wäre, möchten wir uns daher herzlichst bei den Autor*innen bedanken: Katarzyna Biernacka, Petra Buchholz, Sarah Ann Danker, Dominika Dolzycka, Claudia Engelhardt, Kerstin Helbig, Juliane Jacob, Janna Neumann, Carolin Odebrecht, Britta Petersen, Benjamin Slowig, Ute Trautwein-Bruns, Cord Wiljes und Ulrike Wuttke. Um den unterschiedlichen Erfahrungsstufen der Trainer*innen in FDM und/oder Didaktik Rechnung zu tragen, wurden je zwei Hauptdokumente (FDNext_TtTKonzept_Fachinformationen, FDNext_TtTKonzept_DidaktikLehrdrehbücher) sowie eine Methodensammlung (FDNext_TtTKonzept_MethodenMaterialien) erstellt, die unabhängig voneinander, aber auch ergänzend genutzt werden können. Es empfiehlt sich wegen der starken Verschränkung (die beiden Hauptdokumente verweisen stets aufeinander) immer alle Dokumente für ein besseres Verständnis der Ebenen (Fachinformationen, Didaktik, Materialien und Methoden) vorliegen zu haben. Zu jeder Lerneinheit stehen auch begleitende Materialien (Arbeitsblätter, Checklisten, Vorlagen für Flipchart-Blätter oder auch Materialien für Einzel- oder Gruppenübungen) zur Verfügung, welche für das Projekt FDMentor zusammengetragen und zur Nachnutzung veröffentlicht worden sind. Für den Fall einer Nachnutzung in einem von Ihnen gestalteten Workshop empfehlen wir die bereitgestellten Materialien des Projektes FDMentor herunterzuladen, welche auf Zenodo frei zur Verfügung stehen.

Das Poster stellt das Profil und die Dienste des Repositorys RADAR4Culture vor. RADAR4Culture ist ein kostenfreier Service zur nachhaltigen Publikation und Sicherung kulturwissenschaftlicher Forschungsdaten beliebiger Datentypen/-formate gemäß den FAIR-Kriterien. Der Dienst setzt auf dem etablierten Forschungsdatenrepository RADAR Cloud auf, das seit 2017 von FIZ Karlsruhe auf einer sicheren Cloud-Plattform betrieben wird. Er kann von Forschenden an öffentlich geförderten Forschungseinrichtungen, (Kunst)Hochschulen, nicht-kommerziellen Akademien, Galerien, Bibliotheken, Archiven und Museen in Deutschland genutzt werden. RADAR4Culture dient dabei als "catch-all"-Repository und ergänzt das bereits bestehende Portfolio an fachspezifischen Repositorys für Forschungsdaten des kulturellen Erbes. Der Dienst ist z. The poster presents the profile and services of the RADAR4Chem repository. RADAR4Chem is a low-threshold and easy-to-use service for sustainable publication and preservation of research data from all disciplines of chemistry. It offers free publication for any data type and format according to the FAIR principles and can be used by researchers in the field of chemistry at publicly funded research institutions and universities in Germany. RADAR4Chem is based on the well-established research data repository RADAR Cloud, which has been operated by FIZ Karlsruhe on a secure cloud platform since 2017. Втім, в Україні є певні проблеми в цій сфері: переважання досліджень теоретичного характеру, застарілі методи, брак відповідних навичок та ін. Даний посібник містить навчальні матеріали, створені під час реалізації проєкту «Сприяння розвитку емпіричних академічних досліджень в Україні», що має на меті сприяти підвищенню потенціалу вчених та наукових колективів-представників університетської спільноти в Україні у проведенні досліджень з використанням різних типів даних. Цільовою аудиторією проєкту є представники вітчизняної академічної спільноти: науково-педагогічний персонал та аспіранти в університетах України, незалежно від галузі наук, віку, локації. Проект поширює кращі практики організації дослідницької роботи з даними (для всіх галузей наук), тим самим сприяючи досягненню цілей української асоціації дослідників освіти (УАДО) щодо покращення якості емпіричних досліджень в Україні (і в галузі освіти в тому числі). Поєднання представників різних університетів та галузей наук, а також вивчення досвіду організації та функціонування системи академічних досліджень в Європі сприятиме розвитку міждисциплінарних досліджень та розбудові міцної дослідницької організації в Україні, підвищенню дослідницького потенціалу представників академічного середовища та якості досліджень. The contemporary world is characterized by the rapid spread of digital technologies and the hyper-growth of data volumes. Contemporary research is data-driven research. Therefore, having knowledge and skills in working with data is necessary, the so-called “must-haves”, for a contemporary researcher. However, in Ukraine, there are specific problems in this field: the predominance of theoretical research, outdated methods, lack of relevant skills, etc. This handbook contains training materials developed under the framework of Enhancing Empirical Academic Research in Ukraine (ERIKA) project. The latter aims to improve the capacity of scholars and academic teams representing the university community in Ukraine to carry out research using various types of data. The project isimplemented with the support of the Ukrainian Educational Research Association and the European Educational ResearchAssociation. The project's target audience will include representatives of the national academic community: research/teaching staff and PhD students at Ukrainian universities, regardless of the field of science, age, and location. The project intends to promote best practices in the organisation of research with data (for all branches of science), thus contributing to the achievement of the goal of the Ukrainian Educational Research Association (UERA) to improve the quality of empirical research in Ukraine (including in the field of education). The combination of representatives of various universities and branches of science, as well as the study of the academic research system in Europe, will contribute to the development of interdisciplinary studies and the establishment of a strong research organisation in Ukraine, enhancing the research capacity of representatives of the academic community and the quality of research. It is also directly in line with the goals and mission of the UERA and the European Educational Research Association. The project activities include the development (and teaching) of an integrated course comprising two modules: 1) Data Collection for Academic Research (3 ECTS); 2) Academic Research in the EU Member States: Institutional, Organizational and Motivational Dimensions (3 ECTS). Ein professionelles, auf Nachnutzung ausgerichtetes Datenmanagement ist in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung nicht mehr wegzudenken. Für dessen Umsetzung benötigt es jedoch speziell geschultes Personal. Hier bietet das HeFDI Lernmodul "Forschungsdatenmanagement - eine Online-Einführung" einen niedrigschwelligen Zugang. Es ist online einsehbar und liegt inzwischen an allen hessischen Hochschulen in den Lernplattformen Moodle oder Ilias vor. Im Talk werden Aufbau und Inhalte des Kurses vorgestellt sowie Anwendungsszenarien für das Selbststudium und den Einsatz in der Weiterbildung und Lehre diskutiert. Teilnehmende gewinnen einen Eindruck, welche FDM-Kompetenzen sich zu vermitteln lohnen, und bekommen mit dem Lernmodul ein komfortabel nutzbares Tool an die Hand, um entsprechende Inhalte in die eigene Lehre zu integrieren., Die HeFDI Data Talks sind eine zweiwöchentliche offene Informations- und Diskussionsveranstaltung rund um das Thema Datenmanagement im Wissenschaftskontext, in deren Rahmen sich einschlägige NFDI-Konsortien sowie Forschungsdatenmanagements-Dienste vorstellen. Die Reihe diskutiert aktuelle Themen und stellt zahlreiche – auch lokale und regionale – Tools und Services vor. Angeboten werden die HeFDI Data Talks von der Landesinitiative HeFDI - Hessische Forschungsdateninfrastrukturen, welche vom Hessischen Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kunst (HMWK) finanziert wird.

Interimslösningen ska tillämpas för lärosäten som behöver komma igång med lokal lagring innan en fungerande integration med DORIS är på plats. An interim solution for local storage without integration with DORIS This document describes the possible solutions for organisations with the SND network that handle and store data in their own domain, but as yet lack integration with SND's services -DORIS and the research data catalogue. The interim solution applies to universities that need to proceed with local storage before integration within DORIS is in place. The document describes how the solution works and how responsibility is divided between SND and the research principal. The document is a part of the SND DAU-handbook.
