The transfer of charge carriers across the optically excited hetero-interface of graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is the key to convert light to electricity, although the intermediate steps from the creation of excitons in TMDC to the collection of free carriers in the graphene layer are not fully understood. Here, we investigate photo-induced charge transport across graphene–MoS2 and graphene–WSe2 hetero-interfaces using time-dependent photoresistance relaxation with varying temperature, wavelength, and gate voltage. In both types of heterostructures, we observe an unprecedented resonance in the inter-layer charge transfer rate as the Fermi energy (EF) of the graphene layer is tuned externally with a global back gate. We attribute this to a resonant quantum tunneling from the excitonic state of the TMDC to EF of the graphene layer and outline a new method to estimate the excitonic binding energies (Eb) in the TMDCs, which are found to be 400 meV and 460 meV in MoS2 and WSe2 layers, respectively. The gate tunability of the inter-layer charge transfer timescales may allow precise engineering and readout of the optically excited electronic states at graphene–TMDC interfaces.

Chiral metamaterials are obtained by assembling plasmonic elements in geometries with broken mirror symmetry, which can have promising applications pertaining to generation, manipulation and detection of optical polarisation. The materials used to fabricate this promising nanosystem, especially in the visible–NIR regime, are limited to noble metals such as Au and Ag. However, they are not stable at elevated temperatures and in addition, incompatible with CMOS technologies. We demonstrate that it is possible to develop a chiro-plasmonic system based on a refractory material such as titanium nitride (TiN) which does not have these disadvantages. The building block of our metamaterial is a novel core–shell helix, obtained by coating TiN over silica nanohelices. These were arranged in a regular two-dimensional array over cm-scale areas, made possible by the use of scalable fabrication techniques such as laser interference lithography, glancing angle deposition and DC magnetron sputtering. The measured chiro-optical response was extremely broadband (<500 nm to >1400 nm), and had contributions from individual, as well as collective plasmon modes of the interacting nanohelices, whose spectral characteristics could be easily controlled by varying the direction of the incident radiation. Abstract: After spinal cord injury (SCI), widespread reorganization occurs within spinal reflex systems. Regular muscle activity may influence reorganization of spinal circuitry after SCI. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of long-term soleus training on H-reflex depression in humans after SCI. Seven subjects with acute (<7 weeks) SCI (AC group) underwent testing of H-reflex depression at several frequencies of repetitive stimulation. Eight subjects (including 3 from AC) stimulated one soleus muscle daily, leaving the other leg as an untrained within-subject control. Trained limb H-reflexes were assessed during year 1 (TR1) and year 2 (TR2) of training. Untrained limbs were tested during year 2 (UN). H-reflex amplitude was lower at 1, 2 and 5Hz than at 0.1 or 0.2Hz (p <0.05). The pattern of depression differed between AC and UN (p <0.05), but not between TR2 and UN (p >0.05) despite significant adaptations in torque and fatigue resistance (p <0.05). Three subjects who began training very early after SCI retained H-reflex post activation depression, suggesting that early intervention of daily muscular activity may be important.
